AFTERTHOUGHTS - ROUNDUP ROUND 3

April 2023

Nintendo Switch Online Edition!!

HELLO EVERYONE! Yes, you right that right, NSO Edition. This time I'm gonna split the round up into 2 different posts. In April I spent most of the month moving. It was a particularly hard move but we managed to make it through. And some days I wouldn't have a car so I would just be sitting around with my Switch, and even after the move was done I did a lot of just sitting around cause I injured my feet during the move! So, I found myself playing a TON of Nintendo Switch Online games. I've mentioned before that I can't afford the expansion pass, but I was actually able to get 8 people who could all send me $10 each, so we were able to finally afford the $80 family plan!

As such, I've been finally getting to sink my teeth into those other emulators and try out stuff that isn't just on the default version. So get ready for a lot of N64 and Genesis stuff haha

As always, these aren't reviews just thoughts yadda yadda yadda. If you wanna play any of these play them. They're all easy to emulate (I think? Idk how good N64 emulation is atm). Anyway enjoy.

Kuru Kuru Kururin (March 21, 2001) - Gameboy Advance

Of course, we start with GBA first. I'm obsessed with this console and it's actually insane how few games on this console is available on Switch! But one of them is Kuru Kuru Kururin! Which is a game I've actually wanted to play for YEARS cause it's an assist in Brawl. But it never made its way over here (but I found out the day I played it that it WAS released in the UK so... I could have been playing it the whole time. Oops.)

But yeah now that's I've played it, I think this game is pretty cute! It's short and sweet, only having around 30 levels or something around that range. But it can be TOUGH to make it through! The game is all about patience so if you're like me, it's tough to make it through. And if you're like me, you'll use rewinds a LOT to make it through this cause you suck at waiting. Regardless, yeah, this game is fun! Cute music, cute visuals, and you can customize your ship!

Only real complaints is that some of the levels are like straight up mazes, so they can be really hard to navigate. And also in general the game is a little frustrating but I think generally people will find it very easy. Again I'm just not patient. Glad I finally got to try this one out! Would have loved to see this get a sequel on DS or 3DS or something. Oh well. Look at my custom ship! The red parts blink on and off like a warning light :)

Yoshi's Story (December 21, 1997) - N64

And here we go with some games I replayed! Recently I said in my first attempt to do a podcast (shameless plug) that I don't have a lot of memories with the N64. But getting NSO just totally brought everything back. I never forgot how much I loved Starfox 64, Paper Mario, ect ect. But I completely forgot about just how many games on this console I ADORE! One of which being Yoshi's Story!

I was OBSESSED with this game as a kid, I played every level in the game and this also spawned my love for the Black and White Yoshi! And I'm happy to say that, yeah, this game still holds up. I see SO many people say this game sucks. But honestly, I don't agree. Maybe if you payed $60 for it back in the day it'd be disappointing. And while it is easy there's a lot of levels to play and trying to get the high score can be really really tough in certain stages like the piranha plant level or the level with the big fishes.

Regardless, I still think this game is incredibly charming and fun! Great music, great visuals, i ADORE the characterization of the Baby Yoshis. This game really makes them feel like puppies? They growl and act so much like little dogs and I LOVE it. The story book aesthetic rules. I think the gameplay is great. And honestly, this might still be my favorite Yoshi game if you can believe it! My only major complaint when coming back to it is that the switch version makes a lot of the graphics look REALLY odd. This game gets the 2D stuff messed up more than anything else on the service. Very odd.

Starfox 64 (April 27, 1997) - N64

Here we go! Here is one of my all time favorite games EVER! Honestly... I don't even really think I need to write up my thoughts on it as I'm fairly certain the last time I beat this game and talked about it was just last year aha. Without a doubt, Starfox 64 is one of my all time favorites and is easily the game I have played to completion the most. I ADORE this game. So, yknow a quick run of it again wouldn't hurt right? I have NSO now anyway so I might as well...

And now we're here. Yeah, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. This game still absolutely RULES! It's such an amazing game and shmup (do on rail shooters count as shmups? I think they should... 3D Shmups). Even all this time later and after so many playthroughs the game never fails to scratch that itch. Great music, great levels, great characters, great gameplay. And that ending. Augh, gets me every time.

If anyone is curious my favorite route is

Corneria > Meteor Herd > Starwolf > Solar > Macbeth > Area 6 > Venom. Always my favorite set of levels to run through!

Pokemon Snap (March 21, 1999) - N64

Another all time favorite! I mean... This is basically an on rails shooter, if you think about it. Just with VERY different objectives and the bullets are, yknow, photos. So it's only natural I would love this Shmup classic! For real though, if you know me you know I LOVE taking pictures in game, so I love games all about taking pictures!

I used to play Snap a TON back in the day. And after I was absolutely madly in love with the sequel that took way too long to come out, I was interested in revisit the original for a bit now. I will come out of the gate and say it, New Pokemon Snap is better by leaps and bounds. It's got tons more content and things to do. But this only speaks to how good New Pokemon Snap is, because the original still holds up great! It feels fantastic to play, it's super cute, great music, lots of lovely scenarios to take pictures of. And it's made at that cute time period where the Pokemon brand was still figuring itself out. Honestly I think seeing Pokemon just living in nature is one of my favorite ways to see them and now I REALLY wanna play more NPS!

My only real complaints outside of just, not as much to do as the sequel that came out YEARS later is that the stages are SO short! I forgot how insanely short they are! I would love them to be a little longer with more Pokemon, but again that's what the sequel is for I suppose!

I had a bunch of really nice photos I wanted to show off but I deleted my save data before the final boss so I had to play the game a second time and didn't really feel so intense to take many pictures. eh.

F-ZERO X (July 14, 1998) - N64

I feel like I NEVER get to talk about it but I LOVE FZero! It's a series I totally adore and find super fun to play! And with the small amount of games in the series (crying and dying and coping and seething) it's also not very often I get to play a game in the series I've just NEVER played before! But here we are!

I've wanted to try this game for ages but just never could really get my hands on it for one reason or another. But now I didn't really have any reason not to try it! I'd still say it's not as good as GX, but it's still REALLY good! And it's crazy to me that they were so close to the insanity of GX on the N64. Game feels AMAZING to play and has TONS of characters, alt colors for each of them, and lots of tracks! And of course the OST is SUPER GOOD but that's not surprising for FZERO. I'm not a music guy but the guitars in this game sound really good and cool. And it has the fantastic cover of Rainbow Road if you've never heard that.

Off the top of my head the only issue I really have are kinda nitpicky. it's not amazing looking, but I totally understand that it just kinda can't look crazy good on N64, it's a big game with a lot going on and it's not gonna look as good as GX I'm not stupid. But a larger problem I had is that there are SO MANY KILL PLANES! I was trying to jump around the track and kept dying super high up or the collision for the road wouldn't load in cause I guess I skipped checkpoints. Frustrating. LET ME GO NUTS!!

But yeah, good game. I played as Pico and did every track in the Novice Class cause I suck

Dr. Mario 64 (April 8, 2001) - N64

Another game I've been interested in for a while but never got to play before. This one is very odd. it's Dr. Mario so of course it's good but it actually has a story mode with 2 very slightly different stories between Dr. Mario himself and Wario! Yeah this game actually features TONS of Wario Land 3 characters which is so weird and was a big reason I wanted to check it out.

Not much to say on this one. It's Dr. Mario so it's good. But it's just Dr. Mario. Story is cute. Although I didn't have the energy to play through both stories on higher difficulties so I didn't see the true final bosses. It plays fine, looks cool, has a good amount to do. I think the game is a little brutal though. I've never played VS Dr. Mario believe it or not. And I actually think trash blocks in this game are totally detrimental to you if you're not the best at it (like me) so the enemies had a pretty easy time just filling my board with garbage. Ah well. Still neat. Wouldn't mind a new Dr. Mario with a Story Mode and maybe more stuff like Miracle Cures from Miracle Cure on 3DS.

Kirby's Dreamland 2 (March 21, 1995) - Gameboy

Random Gameboy Jumpscare! Yeah last time I played Dreamland 1 so... Why not run through Dreamland 2? Yeah, this one is a LOT better than Dreamland 1. It's got copy abilities, and a whole game set up more similar to Adventure (or Nightmare in Dreamland if you're like me aha) and it has some animal buddies from Dreamland 3! Who, of course, all have different ways of using the copy abilities so there's LOTS to see and experiment with!

Cute sprites, some really honestly very cute and nice looking environments. Good soundtrack. It's honestly pretty dang good feeling and looking for a Gameboy game! I think something that really surprised me with this one is that there's a LOT of unique and cool boss battles in this that I've never really seen before as a casual kirby fan? Nruff, Sweet Stuff, and Ice Dragon are monsters I've seen before but never as bosses. It was neat and actually surprising to not only fight whispy and stuff. I know a lot of Kirby games have new bosses. But still!

Only complaints are stuff like. Ah not enough copy abilities or animal friends. But it's still gameboy there's only so much you can jam pack into it. No, my biggest issue is easily the final boss. Which, if you've played this game you might see the screenshot and realize I didn't fight! Every game in the Dark Matter saga (DL2, DL3, 64 as far as I'm aware?) all do this annoying thing where you can only challenge the final boss after 100% completing the game. This doesn't bug me all the time as I did this for Super Princess Peach and Demon's Crest, but I wasn't like ecstatic to do it in those even though I adore those games. And while I really like these Kirby games. I'm just not crazy enough about it to sit down and try to do EVERYTHING in them at the moment. But that's just me I'm sure Kirby fans could probably 100% this with their eyes closed. And if I ever do sit down to play the entire franchise, I will make an effort to try and grab everything and finally fight the true final bosses to these games.

Pokemon Stadium (April 30, 1999) - N64

Ah now here's a game I have a lot of nostalgia for! Despite not ever doing a full playthrough of the original RBY until last year, I played Stadium a BUNCH growing up! The minigames of course, everyone did, but I actually played Free Battle with Rental Pokemon a LOT for some reason. I was really into it and I remember really wanting Stadium 2 and whatever the GC and Wii ones were called but I never got them.

And something I tried as a child but never managed to do was beat Gym Leader Castle! And now I'm happy to say I did! Did it all with Rental Pokemon of course because they... dont have RBY on Gameboy Online for some reason which is a HUGE mistake by the way. I'll just come out and say it. With your own team I feel like this game would be REALLY exciting. But looking back, with Rental Pokemon. It's REALLY boring. It feels so slow to get through and I totally understand why I just didnt have the energy without save states as a kid.

BUT this game is still nice in a lot of ways. Very charming little title and I ADORE the animations made for all 150 Pokemon. They all have tons of personality, are fun to watch, and are just plain cute. I know Pokemon Company has said there's no reason to make a game like this now that Pokemon main series games are 3D but I disagree because a game like this really allows them to showcase unique emotions and quirks in the personalities of the different species. If that makes sense. Game looks good, music is nice, and of course the announcer is LEGENDARY.

No I am not unlocking Mewtwo, I thought you got him for clearing Gym Leader castle. You do not. I looked it up, you have to do EVERYTHING. I am not doing that.

Also if you wanna see the team I took on Gym Leader Castle with. All rental Pokemon of course. But still neat! (x)

Pokemon Puzzle League (September 25, 2000) - N64

Gosh now here's a REALLY weird game. For years I've seen people say this game is absolutely awful and... honestly it's not. It's just Panel De Pon so it's good objectively. But it still sucks but like, in other ways? Like. I don't know how to describe it the game is just really weird. It's fully based around the anime, which is rare. It has one or two original animations made just for the game (I think they're made just for it)? Which is neat. And it has covers of music from the anime which is neat! I was particularly blown away by the inclusion of Catch Me If You Can from the first movie which is a song I liked a lot in highschool lol. (no Free Up Your Mind or Brother My Brother though 0/10)

But I'dunno even though it plays fine and it has a lot of stuff to do including making your own boards for people to solve which is neat. The game just feels so lame? It looks like a PowerPoint presentation and while you can pick a Pokemon to bring into battle as far as I can tell it has 0 impact on the actual battles which is a HUGE waste because the blocks have type icons on them so I feel like there's a huge missed opportunity for a Panel De Pon game with like elemental weaknesses? Idk how to describe it but it really feels fake, or maybe like a flash game you would have played on the official Pokemon website back in the day. It's not bad but even playing it for free, I'd rather just play Panel de Pon lmao. Sorry Puzzle League.

THAT BEING SAID, I did randomly beat it twice so I could get the better ending. Which I didn't bother doing for Dr. Mario 64, so that's gotta be worth something.

Pulseman (July 22, 1994) - Genesis

Speaking of Pulseman, here's a game with no Pokemon in it! I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone this at this point but Pulseman was made by Gamefreak and even has a lot of the art done by Ken Sugimori which is very neat! This is a game I've actually enjoyed for a bit as I bought it on Wii Virtual console a loooong time ago. But I could never beat it sadly. Thankfully I finally managed to get through it!

Pulseman is VERY cool! I like the character designs of Pulseman and his sidekick girl a LOT. Pulseman also has a lot of really interesting abilities, I think the ability to run fast and build up static to super charge your moves is SUPER cool! There's even some voice acting which is REALLY neat. The game feels very advanced in a lot of parts. And the game has a lot of impressive visuals and looks very good for the most part!

For the most part though. I honestly can't help but feel a little disappointed in Pulseman now that I've played it? I think a lot of the levels don't play to Pulseman's cool abilities enough, I think a lot of the levels in general kinda suck. A lot of the game looks kinda headache inducing with tons of flashing lights instead of focusing on the REALLY nice sprite art if that makes sense. I don't really remember most of the enemies and bosses. And I don't recall any of the music. Idk I hate to say it cause I love Pulseman's design and a lot about the game. But I can't help but feel like this game didn't bring out the concept's full potential.

PERSONALLY I think Pulseman REALLY could use a sequel and honestly, it's not too late. I know Gamefreak is kinda eh on not doing Pokemon every year or so but I really think Pulseman is a game that could go SO nuts nowadays with some cooler levels and expansions on Pulseman's abilities and giving him new tools he can use and upgrade using the static electricity stuff. Ah well, it's still worth playing as an interesting piece of history!

Street Fighter II - Championship Edition (March 18, 1992) - Genesis

Can you believe I've never beaten this game before? Yeah despite how much I love fighting games I only really got into Street Fighter during covid when I played Street Fighter 4 and really found myself loving Juri Han. And while I've been REALLY wanting to get the Capcom Fighting Collection, which includes this, I've just been kinda strapped for cash so I'll have to go with the NSO for Street Fighter II!

Yeah it's fine. Not mind blowing but it is REALLY interesting to go back and play this and see how much of it is still accurate to modern day fighting games? Either the genre hasn't changed much or this game just hit the nail on the head so well (probably a bit of both) but yeah it's neat that it has a lot of modern day fighting game trappings and while it feels outdated, it doesn't feel as outdated as you would expect such an old console port fighting game to feel? Idk how SF2 feels in general though cause I've barely played it. But yeah it's neat. Looks good, has good music, stuff you would expect for Street Fighter. I played as Blanka cause Cammy isn't in this version. Neat :)

Super Fantasy Zone (January 14, 1992) - Genesis

Ah never a bad time for Shmups! I have a little bit of history with Fantasy Zone as I used to LOVE playing my bootleg NES cartridge of it as a kid! Fantasy Zone is very reminiscent of Twinbee with its cute bullet hell stuff and also having a living ship. I love OpaOpa.

This game pretty good, feels great to play, looks adorable, has great boss fights, nice music. And I especially LOVE how many upgrades you can buy for OpaOpa! I just wish they were all permanent or at least lasted longer? I also appreciate that it had a kind of out of nowhere ending with a really cool and edgy dark matter concept and villain, I guess I need to research more Fantasy Zone lore!

My only problem with this game, and while this may feel stupid, I think it's fair to bring up. This game feels like it would be impossible without rewinding? It's 1 hit and you're dead, and it's a bullet hell where it can be really hard to tell where everything is including your ship (which is REALLY important to tell where that thing is during bullet hells aha). With rewinds it wasn't a problem, but I genuinely don't know if it would be possible without them. Still, it's fun so if you have NSO (or an emulator which is free btw) it's a great time!

Ristar (February 16, 1995) - Genesis

Last, but absolutely NOT least, is Ristar! HEY!! RISTAR ROCKS!? WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS GAME RULES ACTUALLY!?!? I've seen it around a lot but idk the game just never really looked like something I'd enjoy. But I figured, why not? Let's give it a go. And I can safely say I was WRONG! Ristar is a FANTASTIC platformer I'm sad I never sunk my teeth into before (well, I never owned it I dont think. But still)

First off, Ristar is ADORABLE. I didn't like how he looked on the boxart but he looks GREAT in game and has some lovely animations (him making snowmen in the ice world killed me.) The music is also fantastic, the bosses are cool, and the whole game is full of really cool ideas! It's even got a neat albeit small story. But particularly, the visuals. Oh my god. This game is GORGEOUS! Ristar has such AMAZING sprite art I was honestly totally blown away by every part of the game's visuals! A part that really made my jaw drop when I first saw it is when you beat a world, the cutscene that plays when Ristar flies to the next planet looks AMAZING and also has some really beautiful music! Honestly, Ristar looks like an indie game trying to look like a Genesis game, but massively overshooting what the Genesis could actually do. And I mean that in the best way possible!

I have some nitpicks with it, I think the final boss had some attacks that were really stupid to dodge? And there were some stages that just... Weren't hitting. But I think my biggest issue with the game is similar to Pulseman's issue. Ristar has cool abilities. He can stretch his arms out and launch things around by bouncing into them like a sling shot. But, this just kind of never gets used? You use it for the spinny things but that's it? I feel like I should be able to angle enemies when I grab them to sling them into eachother, or just be using these abilities in ANY additional ways. Also the game is SLOOOOW, it's REALLY slow game. I think Ristar is another game that REALLY could use a second go around. Ristar 2 could really add to Ristar's abilities and turn up the speed! I think there's so much you could do with grappling and slinging with this character that hasn't been explored yet. PLEASE GIVE US RISTAR 2!!

I hadn't gotten into pokemon until many years after it came out. By the time I bought Platinum even it was considered old. It had been in a display case with other pokemon/older games instead of in it's proper case on the shelves. (I was in a super market on vacation with a friend). Lost many DS games due to the size of the cartidges though. I hope you find and beat if that's something you want to do! ^-^

They need to make the npcs more useful in the higher levels raids. I'm barely beating five stars, forget the six stars. And it wouldn't surprise me if those were the ones that dropped herba mystica. And then go and do things like having a water type pokemon have a fire tera. Like??? What do you want to do with that?! I think I had used rock or ground but still?? Who that what would be a good idea?? The pokemon shouldn't be able to have skills for it's tera type. So that was interesting. Even if they didn't make the npcs useful, at least make it so water and fire can't be paired together LOL

That is an amazing naming scheme! I add y to a lot of names or just a version of what it already has. For example, I named my rockruff Rocky and Rocks, for it's two different evolution types :3 Having named your pokemon after bsd characters though sounds extremely interesting. May I ask how you knew which names you were going to give to which pokemon?

Wait you actually have a shiny eevee for me. That's so exciting! You're so cool and awesome and thank you so much!! He'll be my first shiny!! I'm so thankful and excited I really don't know what to say <3 Unforunitly I don't get online back for a tiny bit. I think the weird tera types are actually kinda nice sometimes! I was doing a five star tera battle earlier against a water pokemon with a fire tera type, and winning the battle was easy because of that. I could take my gyarados into battle and take hardly any damage, so I didn't need to worry about healing or fainting and losing the match because of it. It's just a way to be strategic! And tera types can be changed in case you really like a pokemon you caught in a raid ^^ five and six star raids are where you get the herba mystica, unfortunately. I do wish they made the npcs a little more useful ><;;

I usually go by some sort of reference or vibe when I'm naming my pokemon! Originally, my sprigatito was named Atsushi because cute and cat! But when he evolved into meowscarada, I changed his nickname to Nikolai. For obvious reasons. My magikarp is nicknamed Dazai because useless fish (even if he's not so useless now as a gyarados) <3 and also because it's my favorite pokemon. Growlithe is Chuuya because fire suits him and also dog pokemon. Shroodle is classified as a toxic mouse, so obviously Fyodor. Things like that ^^

And yes!! I have a shiny eevee for you!! I'll hold onto him for as long as you need me to, so it's really no problem. Just whenever you're ready for him. I'm just happy to have found one for you! Duo Maxwell : Oh crap! that's right! Magical Girl powers are useless against heartless like Darkside! Unless...*DING!* I figured it out! The weapon that goes against the heartless is a Keyblade! It only works on Video Game logic!

We finally saved Tokyo, but they might come back to the city, we're still figuring out that why would a 14-year old girl would attack the city and the American Public. Hmmm...I believe it has something to do with a queen that looks alike her twin, another twin from around 70 years ago. Let's just put that in the book for sure. I bet a look alike of that 14-year old girl is behind all of that. Well, at least we saved the city from harm.

Luna : Correct, Celestial 9 is very proud on you completing your task, I will look into the reports on whether they made the mission a success, that is all I ever wanted to hear. Remember, we must look on the threats on all inter-related crimes and the people of this here planet needs the cases to be solved. We Sailor Senshis are a taskforce to defend the human race from the forces of evil, and it is out job to keep Earth safe from ever being harmed. Alright, Senshis, you're all dismissed.

Usagi : Yeah, no probs.

Usagi : Man, what a rough battle. Too bad that it's sorrowful that we had to take down your "crazy" father back there. Yeah, I know, my archenemies or rivals from the past are much kind of a jerk nowadays. Thanks for keeping my friends from a ever going corrupted into supervillains, that would've real messed but how did you get the Sailor Scouts back to their humanity?

Hotaru : Easy. "Nanomachines, son!" That's how sci-fi works, they harden in response to the shapes of physical trauma. I'm aware that line will ever be foreshadowed as a meme by the year 2013. You probably know that Nanomachines might be in our friends' bodies, but, they have been removed thanks to the powers of medical science. Our medical research team had to extract their bodies Since Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto were saved from their archenemies and so does the bad men in the streets of Tokyo.

Usagi : I'm glad you got that right. No men in any country would harm a superhero like me,would they? They wanna harm superheroes, they messed with the wrong girl! I am Sailor Moon and that will forerver be my superhero secret. So it's cool, that I would indeed come back to see mom again.

Ikuko/Usagi's Mom : Yowza! Usagi, what are you doing here at a place like this? And haven't you forgot that you got school tomorrow?

Ikuko Tsukino : Well then, my apologies, young ma'am. I'm so sorry for my eavesdropping. Usagi-chan, you might be a hero to keep your secrets, but you're still my daughter and you have school tomorrow.

Usagi : Yeah, mom. So I like it here as a secret, I got work as a Superhero, but do I really have school like now? How long has it been. Wait, if this is the year 2006, then why is pluto considered to be a planet? Hotaru, How many years have we've been sleeping for over a year and a decade from the past?

Hotaru : Umm, according to my calculations, our friends in 1999, but I believe it's about, umm, like seven years since the Dead Busters we're killed!

Usagi :Wait, you're telling me that I've been asleep at the place for...Seven years!? How long since our old tv show was debuted?

Hotaru : After Naoko and Togashi's marriage, before that, let's just say that our tv show have debuted around...14 years. No we originally debuted about....15 years. (Usagi tilts and then collapses)

Hotaru : Don't worry, you'll get use to it.

Mrs Tsukino : Well, at least she's got school Tomorrow.

Mario...Mario...Mario. Since the early days of Super Mario Bros in 85, the side scrolling of Mario games got better and better as the years went on, but there was one problem that stood out in the 2D era of Mario games, The New Super Mario Bros games. New Super Mario Bros was an era of time from 2006 on DS to the Switch, which was a Wii U Port, so we can say it was 2013. The New Super Mario Bros series was very solid games, and it had a challenge, but over the years, its formula of the series was just.... getting stale.... and everyone was ready for a new 2D Mario game, but the question was, when? Well, 5 months ago, Nintendo announced a new 2D Mario game that not only was it stepping away from the New Super Mario Bros formula, but new gameplay and different graphic outlook. Super Mario Bros Wonder is amazing. This game gives the 2D Mario a brand-new look for what's to come for future Mario games. So, for this review, I’m going to give a rundown of the game in different parts. As follows, I’ll talk about the difficulty, the nostalgic factor, items you unlock within the game, and Verdict! (I will discuss Local/Online multiplayer at a later date, and I will update this review once I experience it)

Difficulty

The game definitely has its moments when it comes to difficulty. Some that are very challenging, and some where the difficulty is not really up to par as they claim it to be. The reason behind my statement is because I grew up playing Mario games and I know what to expect. For some one that is new to the Mario games in general, this game is well balanced in my opinion. The Special World in the game will truly give you a challenge, especially if you are really going for the 100% completion. Also, the secret exits on certain level is a head scratcher for sure. Compared to the past Mario games, sometimes, the game will show you and you can figure it out. However, on this game, you have to use your surroundings and/or certain badges to reach the secret exit.

Nostalgic Factor

Oh yes, let me tell you about some nostalgia for this game. There’s one example I can explain, but the rest you have to find out yourself. There’s a level where it’s really easy and all you have to do is collect 5 coins to form the wonder seed. The music while playing the level is fantastic. The BGM for that particular level is from Super Mario World either the Bonus levels and/or P Switch palace. Let’s just say I was smiling from ear to ear while playing the level. There are more nostalgic levels with different BGM and if you are a huge Mario fan like me, then you will appreciate what Nintendo has done with this!

Items to Unlock

In this game, they introduce badges, which in fact, can be used when you are playing a level, and they are also interchangeable if you think a certain badge seems fit for the level. The only time you can change any badge is when you die, before the level loads, and/or when you are on the world map. These badges can be unlocked by either being bought from the item shops along the way, or when you do the Badge challenges. There are 3 types of badges and 24 badges to collect. You got the Action badges, Booster Badges, and the Expert Badges. The action badges help the characters perform different actions. The booster badges are passive effects which come in handy. The Expert badges are powerful actions given to the character. So, make sure you choose wisely! The other unlockable items in the game are the standees. Ugh... I can’t stress this enough. There are 144 in total to collect (12 for each character), but if you really want that 100%, this gruesome task needs to be done. There are two ways to collect the standees and the 2nd way to collect them is the easiest, but yet, purple coin farming really comes to play. 1st way to collect the standee is to go to either item shop to spend 10 purple coins for a random lottery standee. This method is the worse due to the fact that you can spend 10 purple coins all day until the cows come home and you are not guaranteed to get the one you want, and you will end up getting lucky by getting a new one or a duplicate. 2ndMethod is going to the standee shop in the Special World, spend 30 purple coins to get the guaranteed standee you need for the collection. Either way, it’s very time consuming and farming these purple coins is no easy task.

Verdict

Super Mario Bros Wonder is just amazing. What can I say! I enjoyed it very much and the overall experience was just on point. The new formula kept me hooked for more and wanted to keep me going and going without stopping. If you are looking for recommendation of a amazing 2D Mario game for the Switch, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the answer. Yes, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe is on the switch as well, but Wonder just gives it a new vibe to the 2D Mario series like no other and I can’t wait to see what Nintendo has in store for another 2D and/or 3D Mario game. Hopefully with how well this game did, I sincerely hope that they use this similar formula, but make it even better! This is definitely a 9/10 for sure! Close to a master piece but also better than any 2D Mario games from the past!

Yesterday I did something unusual, at least for me; I pre-ordered a physical copy of Pokemon Violet, which is scheduled to be delivered to my apartment on the day of release on November 18th, 2022.

The last time I pre-ordered anything video game related was back in January 2017 in anticipation of the March release of Nintendo Switch and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Since I was attending the launch event at the Nintendo NYC store, it was the kind of situation where camping out for both the pre-order and the actual launch were mandatory.

Seldom do I purchase more than two or three "retail level" video games a year, and since I mainly use my Nintendo Switch at home, I've set aside my digital-centric habits from the 3DS era and buy all my major Switch releases on cartridge.

In 2021, my entire haul of retail Nintendo Switch games, and modern video games in general, was limited only to Metroid Dread, and Mario Party Superstars.

In 2022, the only games I've purchased are Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus, and my experience in having to drop by three different stores before finding a copy of Pokemon Legnds: Arceus is what made me decide to pre-order Pokemon Violet.

Pokemon Violet will be my first physical purchase of a Pokemon game since Pokemon Black Version 2 on the tail end of the Nintendo DS's lifespan.

The fact that I carried my Nintendo 3DS nearly everyplace I went without exception during the lifepsan of that system made carrying around a bunch of cartridges a tiresome prospect, so I took to downloading most major releases once that option became available.

But playing my Switch at home the overwhelming majority of the time prevented the inconvenience of carrying around cartridges from being an issue, and concerns over the long term robustness of digital game delivery systems has lead me to purchase physical games whenever I have the chance to do so.

Digital games also made it easy to forget the uncertainty of having to go on pilgrimage from store to store the day a new game releases, checking to see which locations have sold out of a hot new title already, presuming they even received their shipments in the first place.

My quest to obtain Pokemon Legends: Arceus in physical form on launch day was a real edge-of-my-seat affair, as I had already announced plans to stream the game on my Twitch channel that evening on the day of release.

So for the first time since 2017, I actually paid in advance to reserve my copy, and in a first time ever for me, rush delivery to my home the day of release is assured, pending any unforeseen complications.

So I'm interested to see how this goes. Hopefully Pokemon Violet shows up early on the 18th and I have plenty of time to get it ready for the stream.

If not, I'll just have to stream Pokemon Puzzle League while I sweat nervously waiting for the game to arrive!

Let’s get real for a second …

I wanted to share with y’all my highschool journey since i’m officially done with highschool !! I’ll be receiving my diploma on Saturday!!!!!

Freshman Year

I was shy and naive at the time, I had a huge circle of friends and I was depressed … When I first entered highschool I had this vision in my head of how it would play out, I was thinking I’d have life long friends and we’d go through highschool together… but that’s not how it went. I did however meet someone who i had a huge crush on and he’s now my boyfriend, at the time i was too shy to tell him how i felt so we remained friends but i’m happy we did (yes we got back together lol).. My friends ended up ditching me because my bestie at the time (the leader of the circle) was mad at me because a guy she liked , liked me … but i NEVER liked him or made him feel like i was interested. It wasn’t fair and i lost all my friends because of it , i fell deeper into my depression… but i moved schools towards the half way mark of the year. I reconnected with my kindergarten bestie and tons of my good friends from middle school and i had a great rest of the year with them, I was even a lot closer to my teachers . One teacher specifically her name is Mrs.Clark , she’s a rainbow of sunshine and I loved her as my math teacher so much! I definitely have plans in the future to revise that situation so that I can let that pain go in my heart and move on from it emotionally. I haven’t already because I don’t think ab it too much anymore and I want to do it when i’m ready.

Sophomore Year

I was weary about going back to the same highschool i originally went to, i missed my friends and felt like i didn’t belong at this school. Despite that going back to school meant i get to see him again . We had one class together and during summer we kinda fell off but I just loved seeing him , he’s so funny lol. It didn’t matter tho we didn’t become close this year because i ended up in the hospital maybe a month or two before quarantine and i was with another guy at the time . (fuck him) I found out that I had a brain tumor but it wasn’t life threatening and i wasn’t really worried . (It’s gone now I manifested it away 😁) But i was unable to attend school and i spent the rest of mt sophomore year in and out of the hospital…. and then quarantine hit ….

Junior Year

THE ABSOLUTE WORST YEAR ! I spent my entire junior year in the house , distant learning … I was so depressed at this time , I didn’t attend online school at all really. For the first time in my academic career I had Fs and Ds . (I’ve revised this lol) But it was despicable lol I hated online schooling with a passion. All I did was sleep and go to my ex’s house. (boyfriend at the time) Buttttt guess who I had an online class with … my boyfriend now lol. We always had one class together throughout highschool which has to be a sign or fate or something magical lol .. junior year sucked moving onnnnn

SEXY SENIORRRRRRR

Now senior year 😏 that’s my nigga right there . I absolutely loved my senior year and that’s mostly thanks to my new found info of the law of assumption and my amazing lover . We reconnected over the summer before school started and ended up dating in June of 2021 😩 he’s been my rock for almost a year now and our friendship goes back to freshman year 🤞🏾 i love Danté with all my being . Anywhooo I didn’t have many friends but I don’t need/want them really . I had amazing teachers that I connected with on personal levels , Mr.Brown !!! AN AMAZING BLACK EDUCATOR YALL !!!!!!!! He deserves an award for best educator at that school okayyyy, he’s inspirational, he’s funny and most importantly he’s real. He understands us and tries his hardest to be there for us . He is definitely the schools Dad ! He was my African American Experience teacher 😌 and my favorite teacher of all time! I’m gonna cry at graduation when I see him for sure 🥹 I know he’s proud and he’s been an amazing teacher yall , i wish i could take him to college with me man (i’m defff manifesting that hehehehe) I made myself so proud this year , I was working pretty hard before i got into the void so i’m proud of those efforts and happy to say i don’t have to work hard unless i want to . It’s relieving asf 😩😩😩 Prom was amazing i had so much fun dancing with my boo and some friends . I even got a dance with Mr.Brown lol he got more rhythm then everybodyyyy 😂 don’t play w himmm ! Overall tho my senior year was everything i originally hoped highschool would be 😫 Im so happy to be graduated and done! 13 long years of school and NIGGA WE MADE IT !

To All The Class of 2022 :

We FUCKING DID IT !!!! Despite everything we made to the finish line . I hope everyone holds their heads high walking across that stage and even if u don’t want to walk across the stage baby hold ur head high and pat urself on the back ! We get to be adults now live in the real world , create families and lifelong memories . We get to find ourselves and chase our dreams ! Be who we want to be. Our generation is different from anyyyy generation. We are breaking curses and healing trauma . Our kids will be damn proud and i say DAMN PROUD of our sacrifices as a generation. We made it through covid despite not having hope . We are the class of 2022 and we’re here to make our mark on the world !!

BnHA Chapter 320: Deku vs. Class 1-A

Previously on BnHA: Flashback!Kacchan was all “fuck Deku and fuck his stupid goodbye letters, I need to speak to somebody in charge.” Endeavor was all “hello, I am Somebody In Charge.” Kacchan was all “listen up asshole, you need to let us go out and collect our wayward nerd because you stupidly left him alone with All Might and that’s a fast track to disaster right there.” Endeavor was all, “[self-incriminating silence].” Rat Principal was all, “okay sure, have fun kids.” Back in the present, class 1-A was all “hi Deku” and Deku was all “I’M FINE!!!!!” and Kacchan was all “THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT YOU’D SAY YOU DUMB FUCKING NERD” and so the kids all got ready to fight, because OF COURSE they’re gonna fight. Sorry guys, but yeah it’s happening.

Today on BnHA: Kacchan is all “what’s up Deku you look like a possessed Rorschach test, so anyway how are the new quirks coming along.” Deku is all “they’re coming along like THIS” and uses Smokescreen to try and get away. Kacchan is all “PHASE ONE COMMENCE”, and Kouda, Sero, Jirou, and Ojiro leap into the fray to shower Deku with heaps of love and violence, because this is a shounen manga and kicking someone’s ass while simultaneously proclaiming your undying admiration for them is just how it’s done in these parts. The KoudaSeroOJirou squad then passes the baton to Satou, Momo, Tokoyami, Kaminari, and Shouji, who are all “fuck this mask” and do a bunch of stuff to tear Deku’s mask off because they’re the real heroes. Shouto is all “LOOK AT THE LITTLE CRYBABY, THAT’S RIGHT, GO AHEAD AND FUCKING CRY and by the way let us share your burden please,” and once again I swear this is all very deeply moving and touching within the actual context. The chapter ends with Tsuyu being all “look at me. I’m the cliffhanger now,” and damn.

incidentally, as @class1akids pointed out, this also casts an interesting light on this chapter in terms of who hasn’t fought Deku yet. not to play the Hagakure Traitor Music for the billionth time you guys, but I’M JUST SAYING lol.)

anyway, but the good news is that they all seem to understand that. and the even better news is that we have reached the tier 3 friends!!

PREEMPTIVE REBUTTAL: this is a callback to the classic “even heroes cry when they have to” Shouto line from chapter 137. Shouto is clearly following Kacchan’s lead here and going for the more ruthless approach, knowing that the gentle approach isn’t getting through to him (if anything it’s only making him more stubborn as we saw on the previous page). basically it’s his way of pointing out that even heroes are still only human, and so is Deku last time he checked

ah okay, and there Tsuyu is at last

okay real talk, I get why Tsuyu is included in the tier 3 friends, because she was one of the first people to team up with Deku going all the way back to USJ. but that said, this probably would have had more impact if their most recent interaction hadn’t been like 150 chapters ago

but anyway though it’s still a good speech. maybe not quite a cliffhanger-level speech, but a good speech nonetheless. in a way though, I’m glad to see that Horikoshi seemingly didn’t give a fuck whether he ended this on an actual cliffhanger or not for once

and that “headed toward the climax” part has me excited too, ngl. because if we really are getting to the so-called climax this soon, that makes me even more certain that there is indeed a DvK3 in the forecast. so I presume that next week (or I guess two weeks from now) will be the tier 3s along with the remaining tier 2s like Kirishima and Aoyama

The long overdue Malex reunion , here some of my thoughts (it might get a bit long, but well, what can you do?🤷🏻‍♀️)

Was I surprised with the amount of progress we got in 3x08? Yes. Did I think the writers would deliver this Malex perfection? Not at all. At least not right now.

Did it make sense though? YES 👏🏻 A 👏🏻THOUSAND👏🏻 TIMES 👏🏻 YES 👏🏻

Here's the main reason: Roswell NM uses A LOT the off screen, fill in the blanks trick.

It has been that way since season 1. So much so that when I started binging the show, one of my first thoughts was: "They sure like to make the audience assume a lot instead of showing it"

Is this a bad thing? Overall, no. Especially when done it right.

Do I believe RNM should ease a bit on let the viewers fill the blank spaces thing? Yes. I think they should.

We are seeing right now how can it go wrong with the lack of mentioning Kyle, for instance. 💔

It just would be better for us, viewers, if there was a nod or something, and not just "ah ok, I'm assuming they all know already where's Kyle". Because people can assume right or wrong and that's where trouble lives.

Again, season 3 is so much better than the previous two when it comes to storytelling. They are fixing the mistakes of season 2 and they are delivering a main arc story that gets us hooked. Bravo! 🌟 To me, they are finally living up to the potential of the show!

But again, fill in the blanks is a thing with them.

So, when it comes to Malex being back, we have to see their story as a whole, since season 1 and not just the events of season 3.

It's everything that happened between them until now.

Luckily for us, the fill in the blanks exercise is much easier to do and to be convinced by it because:

Vlamis and Tyler understood the assignment

Props, props to them. The chemistry between these two is absurd. It's organic, they play off each other so very well and it shows ever since 1x01. Chef's chef's kiss 😘

Michael and Tyler clearly love these characters and love the story they carry. They are invested in telling it right and they do it effortlessly.

Malex doesn't need to have a single line of dialogue and we still can sense their deep love for each other.

To have this kinda of dynamic in a show it's gold. A story can be well written but can reach another level depending who is portraying it. It can be so much more, for the best.

RNM was perfect on the cast of the cosmic not-so-idiots-anymore love story.

If Malex is the fan favorite duo it is, it's because Vlamis and Tyler delivered and keep delivering on each episode.

So everything about 3x08 was a culmination of fill in the blanks, the narrative of 3 and a half seasons and everything in between.

These two characters have been in love for 12-13 years.

They genuinely, sincerely, with all they have love each other despite all the chaos surrounding them.

They've tried to run away from it, tried to move on from it, and they still ended up heading towards the other.

Michael is in love with Alex. Always has been, always will. Alex is in love with Michael. Always has been, always will.

That's just the way it is in this little alien story. 👽

Alex poured his heart into a song because he has never been able to say the words. "Wish I found the words when we were 17".

Michael heard the lyrics but walked away because he still was a few steps behind Alex. Not in terms of love, but in terms of moving on from trauma. "Alex is past that. He's past you. He's past me" 💔💔💔

So season 3 begins.

A year has gone by and Michael was hopeful to see Alex again. He didn't walk away in 2x13 because he didn't want to be with Alex, but because he did. Alex, on the other hand, was trying to move forward since Michael left.

For these two cosmic idiots with no communication skills whatsoever, Malex was officially just friends. With tons of baggage, but just that.

The sadness in Michael's eyes when he saw Alex at the bus station with somebody else. 💔

Then, Forrest presented two options for Alex. Walk away from crazy discoveries or stay and go deep into DS. The minute Alex said "aliens?" We knew Alex reasoning behind the question.

He definetely would choose finding out more about the aliens his family was obsessed with. And he did make that choice. Because that choice ultimately meant and revealed he was not ready to walk away from Michael.

Michael, in the chaos of clones and family lineage, went to see Alex in 3x03 and harsh truths were delivered by Alex but, again, it was everything Michael needed to hear.

Even though we could see Alex was trying to hold his own when it came to Michael, in the end of harsh sincerity, he could not resist to say: "wait". And then, he gave Michael the push to progress.

They stayed apart, figuring their own things out. 6 and 3/4 episodes apart.

After a few days in Roswell time, their paths crossed again. Turned out they were working the same case, kinda.

And then 3x08 hit 🔥

They have been apart for most of the first half of the season and with two interactions full of tension. But the story that led up to 3x08 put things in perspective.

And Alex was the one to see it.

If 3x08 taught us something, it's that Alex Manes can put his emotions aside and see things with analytical skills.

With a psycho alien dictator on the loose and with an emotional connection to his cosmic cowboy idiot, Alex needed to step up to handle hot headed Michael and make sure he was safe.

He saw that if he kept defensive, Michael would too.

So, he let his guard down and told the truth. About DS and about why he joined. He knew Michael would listen if he was sincere.

"I did it for you. A world where you feel safe is not gonna built itself. So I had to try. For us".

Here is two people that know they love each other but they just don't talk about it.

He then used some words again when he had to make sure Michael wasn't going to let his emotions get the best of him.

You could see in Alex's face when he looked at Michael right before sharing the story of how he injured his leg that he had to share that one to make sure Michael would listen.

"I lost a piece of me in many ways [...] Guerin, you are the one piece I can't go through life without".

For somebody who could not find the words for so long, Alex finally found them 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

And then, he continued to do so when they were at the Pony, being open and honest about the machine and DS.

Now onto Michael.

We've seen Michael take huge steps to become better at living and not just being a pit of anger and trauma issues.

It started with "breaking old patterns", for a second went to self loathing again, and then took a whole force with "You decide who you are. If you give up, it's on you".

Michael listened to Alex and decided to be better for "the people that matter". It's not a head scratch to assume along the list of important people that Alex was on the top of it.

We saw Michael on a mission.

Apologizing to Rosa "I didn't think I should have a life if Rosa ortecho didn't". "Maybe there's hope for me too". Protecting Kyle. Working to keep everyone safe.

Michael grew.

And then, he found out Alex hadn't give up on them. He got to see Alex be vulnerable. He got to hear how Alex loves him still.

For a full day there, he didn't have to be defensive because Alex wasn't being it. Michael followed Alex's lead and didn't let his emotions take over him. He followed the plan. He trusted.

Thoroughout 3x08 we saw Michael be better for the person on top of his list.

With defensiveness aside, all Malex moments were gold and everything it should be.

But their last scene, at the Pony, was the culmination of it all. Of the weight of their story, of their growing and their time apart.

At the table, both Alex and Michael found common ground by being clear, honest and by compromising for each other out of their feelings for one another.

Alex by then had brought all his walls downs. His smiles and lightness said it all. Michael saw it. And Michael, well Michael, finally chose talking instead of assuming, accept help instead of rejecting it, work together instead of doing alone.

"Maybe it is". "I completely get it". "One mission at a time". "I'm looking forward to it".

But the last scene though, was them coming together and turning the page with a kiss that was as intense as it was soft, sweet, tender and full of longing.

They went cosmic ... again!

With "I'm confused, though. What mission are you working in right now?", Michael made his move.

He stood up, took his hat off and kissed the love of his life to make it clear that he was fighting for them too. With no room to question who has his heart.

With sighs of wonder and smiles of relief, Malex turned a chapter in their cosmic story. 💜🌌👽🌟

And it made an universe of sense.

Obey Me x VoiKone Guest Characters VA Audition

Yo yo yo, it's Saori in da house!

You may have seen this news spreading around: The Obey Me Team is working with some random Japanese-only app (twt:@/boikone_info) to audition for new characters in Obey Me!

"NANI THE F*CK!? NEW CHARACTERS, YOU SAY!?!?" goes the rest of the fandom.

Now hush hush, no rush. I want to clear some things up first.

I'm one of the culprits on Twitter spreading this information, but as the news spread there seems to be more misunderstanding, so I have the responsibility to clear things up.

First of all, this is an audition role for guest characters. GUEST CHARACTERS THAT ONLY HAVE AN ONE-OFF APPEARANCE, IN AN EVENT. No, they are not going to voice Michael, no Raphael, no Mephisto-whatever his name is. (lol)

And secondly, the JP-only app BoiKone (short for Voice Connect) is an interactive voice livestreaming app run by the same company, NTT Solmare, that produced the game, Obey Me!. So basically, it's different departments in the same company working together.

Rules of the audition, and the characters that they will be casting, will be explained below.

RULES

3 people regardless of gender will be chosen through 2 rounds of auditions. 1st round will be decided by votes from the app VoiKone (by NTT Solmare).

If selected, they will be given around 30 lines for each character cast. (subject to changes)

20 people will be selected from the highest votes, and will proceed to the 2nd round of audition.

Results will be made known in June, and the selected 3 will make their way to Osaka for voice recording in end August-early September, all-expenses-paid. (T&C apply)

However, depending on the world situation, there may be cases where home recording will be used instead.

You must be 15 yrs and above, currently living in Japan and knows Japanese in the native level, is able to travel to Osaka for recording, and is using the VoiKone app for contacting.

The event is scheduled to be released between Dec 2021 - Feb 2022. You will NOT be credited for your involvement in voice acting in the game.

Like other events, it will be ongoing for 2 weeks. After the event, it will return in Lonely Devil after 6 months.

P.S. applications are closed less than an hour of posting.

Days later, the 1st round of audition is over and the results were out.

The 20 participants who passed the 1st round will be asked to submit their voices to the prompts.

The "Obey Me!" team and the VoiKone team will review the submissions and select 3 people to appear in "Obey Me!" as guest VAs.

SETTING

The Little Ds, who work at the Demon King's Castle, are acting strangely...? And voila, they turned out to be completely different demons!

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Character Name: Virago

Personality: Cheerful, Eccentric

Always looking for big happenings that are beyond their imagination, Virgo is very excited about the bizarre turn of events that is happening among the Little Ds. Virago often startles Mur, who shivers with fear.

"Hmmm, this is getting interesting."

"Well, well, well. I have a feeling that something fun is about to happen."

"Ahh! How delightful! How joyous! This is what I've been looking forward to!"

Character Name: Asta (Astaroth)

Personality: Cute, Soothing

Asta has a caring nature and is always taking care of someone. Asta is kind and always spoiling everyone, to the point that some demons become addicted to Asta, saying "I can't live without Asta anymore!"

Asta often comforts Mur, who is crying after being surprised by Virago.

"The tea is ready to be served ♪ Would you like to take a break?"

"Ehehe, I'm glad you like it."

"I was watering my flower bed and the flowers just started to bloom! Looks like many good things are going to happen and it makes me all cheery."

Character Name: Mur (Murmur)

Personality: Timid, Crybaby

Mur's goal is to become a strong and cool demon like the Seven Rulers Of Hell. Often gets surprised and cries out because of Virago's outlandish behaviour.

"Uwahh... Where am I...? I'm alone and scared... *sob*"

"EEEEEK! Don't eat me! Please spare my life!

"I know I shouldn't cry all the time, but... *sob* The tears just won't stop flowing..."

My Shining Star

[STORY SOURCE]

Up until some recent events, I used to be an aspiring shiny hunter. Technically I was pretty good at it, too, at least by encounter standards. But even though I was great at finding my fair share of shiny Pokémon , I’ve never been able to keep any of them.

The first one of these shiny Pokémon I found was by a random encounter. I’d gotten lost in Rock Tunnel after forgetting to bring Flash, and spent so long in there that I ran out of Repels. Just as I was giving up hope that I’d be able to escape on my first run, she appeared.

I knew about shiny Pokémon, but hadn't ever thought I'd encounter one of my own in the wild. I was unprepared, and after a moment of staring in surreal wonder, I concentrated on figuring out how to catch her with my limited supplies. Thankfully it wasn't very hard, and soon I had my first legit shiny.

I normally wasn't creative with naming my Pokémon, but I wanted her to have a special name. I asked my mom for help, and she suggested "Star." I liked it, but the name itself seemed short and boring, so I added a couple stars to the ends to give her name a little flair.

I was beyond excited to put my first shiny into my team, and plowed through the rest of the cave. She was the light at the end of the tunnel, and I had to get out to the nearest PC, because I knew a shiny baby Cubone was waiting for me to adopt her.

I quickly fell in love with the little green dinosaur, and soon she was the shining star of my team. I used her more than my starter, and neglected the rest of my party a bit in the process, but still made it through the game alright. Setbacks didn't matter when I had a shiny.

Lots of time and multiple trips through the Elite Four later, I proudly turned ★Star★ into a level 100 Marowak. She was the first Pokémon I ever raised to level 100, and I couldn't have been prouder of her.

It had been a couple years, and I was starting to feel unsatisfied with just ★Star★. I was itching for more, and felt like I probably should have found some other random encounters by now, with all the time I'd spent playing.

Feeling inspired by all the shiny hunter videos I'd been binging on YouTube, I decided to start taking up shiny hunting. I was feeling ambitious, and decided to go straight to hunting for a shiny legendary Pokémon. I was a weird player who didn't really bother going after the birds or Mewtwo in my HeartGold, since I planned on transferring up my legends from my LeafGreen. I decided to rework ★Star★'s moveset for capturing legendary Pokémon.

The moveset I settled on was Bonemerang, False Swipe, Stone Edge, and Swords Dance. I decided to keep her moveset mostly offensive because she was still a member of my team, and not just a shiny-catcher. I planned on replacing False Swipe with Aerial Ace at some point, but I never got the chance to.

I decided to pick Mewtwo as my target. Lots of people find green shiny Pokémon overbearing and unattractive, but ★Star★ made me fond of them. Plush, Mewtwo was awesome, and I thought the two of them would look great together.

I spoke to ★Star★ aloud, saying, "Are you ready to do some shiny hunting, ★Star★?"

"★Star★ let out a roar!"

I thought she was just as enthusiastic as me.

I made it to Mewtwo, saved my game, and started the tedious process of soft resetting.

I’ll spare the details of how long it took, but eventually I came across the sparkling green Mewtwo.

I led with my team's Ampharos to paralyze it, and switched to ★Star★.

I remember being very lucky with this fight at first, with Mewtwo being fully paralyzed every turn.

I used Swords Dance to fully buff ★Star★'s attack stat so False Swipe would do as much damage as possible.

But even though I swore that I had chosen to use False Swipe, ★Star★ proceeded to use Bonemerang.

Shocked, confused and distressed, I watched as ★Star★ mercilessly beat the shiny Mewtwo down, knocking it out in one hit with her increased stats.

I felt crushed and dejected as I went back to the overworld. I blamed myself, thinking I had misclicked the wrong move and killed the Mewtwo myself. In my wave of disbelief, I absentmindedly talked to ★Star★.

"★Star★ is green with envy!"

I decided to go back to square one and start over.

A dozen thousand resets later, I saw it sparkle again and I was shaking with anticipation. Part of me felt twitchy and paranoid, like I should have used my Master Ball right away.

I decided against it because I wanted to hunt the birds later, but decided that if the Mewtwo seemed like it would run low on moves, then I'd use it as a last resort.

I probably should have listened to my guts though, because the same thing happened all over again. I knew for certain this time that I had chosen False Swipe, but the game purposefully made ★Star★ use Bonemerang. I saw it completely clear.

After seeing the Mewtwo go down a second time, I just cursed and slammed my desk a bit. I glared accusingly at my Marowak.

I decided to put my shiny hunting on hold. I used an Escape Rope to leave, and decided to place ★Star★ in the PC, quarantining her in an empty box for a time-out.

As I dejectedly hunted for a third time, I thought to myself what was wrong with my game. I wondered if it was just glitchy, or if I was misinterpreting the situation. I decided to convince myself that it was a mistake on the game's part; otherwise I wouldn't have been able to handle killing the Mewtwo twice in a row.

Finally, it sparkled one last time. I decided not to screw around while reclaiming this shiny. I had hunted it twice before, and decided to just use the Master Ball on it.

I had earned this.

After the initial rush of finally obtaining the shiny, I decided not to nickname it until I thought of something good, and watched as it got sent to the PC. I excitedly saved my game, and made my way out of the cave and to the nearest Pokémon Center.

But when I got there, the Mewtwo wasn't anywhere to be seen.

I shouted curses in confusion as I scrolled through every box in a state of denial. Where did it go, what could I have possibly done? I thought of all the ways I couldn't possibly messed up, did I have an evil hacked Pokémon from the GTS that deleted it, was this actually a bootleg game and Nintendo's anti-piracy revenge was to delete my legendary?

After a few minutes of searching, I gave up. My Mewtwo was gone.

I scrolled back to ★Star★'s isolated box and looked at my only green shiny in mourning. Obviously it wasn't something wrong with just her, but the game itself. In a game as glitchy as this, I was seriously worried that I might lose her, too.

After looking at her for a bit, it seemed like she might've been looking at me? I wasn't sure if she was supposed to do that, but in a game that was acting up like this, I didn't doubt it.

I took her out of the PC and put her at the front of my party to talk to her, to see if anything else was up.

"★Star★ nodded slowly."

She only did more random friendly things after that. Quite chipper for someone whose life might be threatened, I thought.

I decided to trade her over to Platinum for safe keeping. I wasn't sure what to do about the rest of my Pokémon on HeartGold, but ★Star★ was the most important one to me right now.

As I traded her over, I noticed that her eyes were red now, instead of the green I was just looking at. I was off-put by this inconsistency, especially with the recent events surrounding her. I forced myself to brush it off, however, notice I could do about it.

Even though I had an unfortunate experience with my HeartGold, my thirst for more shinies still persisted. Maybe it was the fact I had lost my shiny three times that I really had to fill the void, now. A couple weeks later, I found out about a method of shiny hunting called chaining, and wanted to try it out. I felt a little more at ease, since if you accidentally killed a shiny with this method, the chain wouldn't break, and you could keep going. Plus, Platinum should've been fine.

I chose Route 208, as it had a good selection of Pokémon for me to choose from. I wasn't picky, so I just started chaining whatever Pokémon I liked until I got a decent chain. I heard that the shiny odds max out at a chain of 40, so after that you can just keep resetting the radar until the grass sparkles.

I landed on Roselia, and sent out my shining star Marowak.

I started with False Swipe, since I wouldn't need to buff up ★Star★ for a LV. 19 Pokémon.

"★Star★ used Swords Dance!"

Oh no.

I panicked as memories of the last incident came flooding back, and how it had started out with her disobeying. Not giving her a chance to kill it, I frantically switched to the items menu to start throwing PokéBalls instead.

I had plenty of them, so I stared throwing Ultra Balls, since they had the highest odds. At least one of these would probably work.

" blocked the Ball!"

"Don't !"

I tried throwing one, but it failed, as if I tried using it on a trainer's Pokémon.

I had no idea what in the world was going on, what could be stopping me from catching a wild Pokémon? Was my Platinum glitched out too? Was I cursed??

I tried using different balls, but nothing would work.

Eventually, I ran out of PokéBalls to throw. I'd failed the shiny.

Frustrated, but not enough to kill the Roselia, I fled the battle.

I had no idea what to do after that, and was exasperated. I wanted to berate myself, and that I should've tried test catching a normal Pokémon in Platinum first to make sure it was going to work okay. But really, how was I supposed to know that was going to happen? And always, conveniently when I was in the middle of hunting a shiny. I thought of berated my parents instead, if they had bought all my Pokémon games for me on eBay.

Was it really my games, thought? I don't even know if you can trade Pokémon from fake games. Was it my DS could it have been hacked? Can you even bootleg a DS? I tried going to the Internet for answers, and read some Reddit and random Pokémon forum posts about glitches and bootlegs for an hour, but gave up without finding a real conclusion.

So, I'd given up hunting for some time. But, I hadn't gotten tired of Pokémon. I bought Black for myself, and played through the story just fine.

I found out you could get a Shiny Charm if you completed the Pokédex. That made me excited, until I remembered my past luck. Was it worth trying again?

Shortly after transferring up all my Pokémon, I decided, yes. It was. I went for the hatching method this time, since the Pokémon ends up right in your party afterwards- no catching, no PC transfer. It would be my final test, and if THIS didn't work, I would officially give up on ever getting nice things.

Foreign Ditto in hand, I went to work. I went for a shiny Flygon, since they were one of the best looking, and it'd be a nice addition to my competitive team.

One long hunt and a really late night later, eyelids barely able to stay open, I saw it.

I'd never seen anything more beautiful.

Skipping the nickname, I rushed to immediately save my game, wasting no time. I checked my party to see my Trapinch was still there, and chalked it up as a success. I was an official shiny hunter now.

Since ★Star★ was level 100, I figured she could battle for my baby Trapinch until she could hold her own in battle. I only wanted to take her up a few levels, so I could personally train her afterwards. Just raising her immediately into a Flygon would be too soon.

I attached an Exp. Share to her, and started running around in the tall grass. After a little bit of grinding, my Trapinch made it up to level 8 before I accidentally stepped into the thick grass and triggered a wild double battle.

Knowing the wild Pokémon were too strong for the underleveled baby Trapinch, I wanted to flee, but I first noticed ★Star★'s sprite as it asked me what to do.

The end of her bone facing the wild Pokémon was no longer symmetrical, being sharpened at the end of it. I'd seen her sprite enough times to know it wasn't supposed to look like this.

I tried to flee, but it failed.

"★Star★ used Swords Dance!"

"The wild Pidove is watching carefully!"

"The wild Patrat is watching carefully!"

"Trapinch is watching carefully!"

★Star★ had started using moves on her own. Stunned, I tried to switch out.

"★Star★ can't be switched out!"

Giving up, I told ★Star★ to use Stone Edge on the Pidove, and told the Trapinch to use Bite on Patrat.

"★Star★ ignored orders!"

"★Star★ used Bonemerang!"

I gasped as she struck my Trapinch instead.

"★Star★ is green with envy!"

As soon as I read that text, it hit me. This wasn't any ordinary friendly fire.

"Trapinch fainted!"

It finally allowed me to run, so I immediately tapped the button and rushed to my party to see the damage.

My Trapinch was gone.

I tried resetting to bring her back, but it was hopeless. My shiny new baby had been murdered.

Connecting all the dots in my head, I realized the reason I'd failed every encounter was because of ★Star★.

My grief and fear quickly turned into outrage. I couldn't believe she'd done this to me. She'd made me suffer hunt after hunt, just to take every shiny away from me.

This was the source of my games acting strange, and I knew there was only one way to correct it.

Feeling rash, I rushed over to the PC and hovered over the "Release" option for a few minutes.

"★Star★ was released."

It hurt to let her go, but I didn't want my game behaving strangely with her around.

"★Star★ came back!"

"★Star★ will never leave you."

But she refused.

Resorting to desperate measures, I did the only other thing I could think of.

I traded the stubborn Marowak over to my nearly empty White version that I never got around to playing, and deleted the save file.

"Deleting all saved data... Don’t turn off the power."

"★Star★ will n"

Sayonara, ★Star★.

After deleting the save file, I thought things would start working like they should. Sometimes, I'd replay other Pokémon games just for the fun of it, hoping I'd find other shiny Pokémon with ★Star★ gone.

Almost comically, I somehow thought it would be a good idea to go full circle and try hunting on HeartGold for a shiny starter. I had heard from other shiny hunters that it was an easy hunt, and it was, only taking a few days.

I affectionately named him "Chico."

My first step into the tall grass, and...

"★Star★ is green with envy!"

I had never been so unhappy to see a shiny.

I guess she's been out in the wild all these months. And looking at her sprite, I can only wonder what she's been up to. I wonder how she feels to see me again?

Oh, no.

“Can’t escape!”

"★Star★ used Bonemerang!"

"Chico fainted!"

Of course, Chico was no match.

The game froze after I blacked out.

I figure it was because ★Star★ killed my only Pokémon.

"The save file is corrupted. The previous save file will be loaded."

My save file, corrupted with the loss of my starter's data, brought me back right to this spot that I was all too familiar with. Through frustrated tears, I begrudgingly went to pick a normal starter so I could play the game normally.

“I dare you to love again.”

And I’ve never found a shiny since.

Progress: Prologue Complete

I have this neurotic tendency thing about going through an entire series chronologically, even when I know the games/tv shows/whatever aren't all connected. Hence why I've been slogging through the remakes of the earliest Final Fantasy games for the past few years.

I started Fire Emblem last night. I am very ready for this journey.

I first became aware of the series as a pretty young child, while reading the character bios in Super Smash Bros. (Melee). Roy and Marth were by far the coolest characters, and it frustrated me to no end that I couldn't go play their games. Because at the time, the Fire Emblem games weren't being released outside of Japan.

Enter the DS remake of what I believe to be the very first FE game-> Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon.

I'm enjoying it quite a lot so far. As the years passed and more games got released-- and the series got more popular-- I came to view FE in a more serious light. I knew of it as the games where the deaths were real: Once someone's health reaches zero, they disappear from the game entirely. And as daunting as that was, it's an aspect I really admire. I find really interesting now, as I've finally seen firsthand the effort that went into crafting these characters. They all have set names and their own dialogue and unique designs. That the creators would be willing to kill them off for good if the player messed up is kind of impressive to me. In a sort of brutal way. And I love games that have the potential for every single playthrough to be a different experience, even if the story remains the same.

I just finished the Prologues... And I'm already at two deaths. ^^'

There's a scripted one where you have to choose to leave one person behind as a decoy. I think. I toyed with the idea of just trying to make a run for it with all of them but ultimately decided to just do as the game asked. I had just picked up a sixth party member and thought this might be their clever way of capping you at five without explicitly saying so. (Though I am interested if anyone knows if you can get away with them all.)

I sacrificed Cain.

I wish I could say some serious thought went into this decision but... It's just so early into the game! I'm just starting to even be able to tell them all apart! Cain was the only one who'd taken real damage, so he became the decoy. I don't feel too bad about that one.

Gordin on the other hand...

Gordin's death was 100% a fuck up on my part. I was still learning the controls and accidentally skipped the rest of my team's turn somehow, and he ended up paying the price. I was given control back and he was just gone. So I assume that means death.

Sorry, Gordin. You were on my team for a total of, like, 90 seconds, but I'll try to remember you going forward. RIP.

It's pretty great so far, though. It's kind of the Nuzlocke principle: You're more likely to get attached to characters if there are real consequences behind losing them in battle. I like that. And the way they've set up each characters' skills from the start is great too. I really like that the two older characters-- Jagen and Frey-- are significantly stronger, even though you play the first leg of the journey with just Marth, so he naturally has a few levels over everyone else by the time they join the party.

I'm not loving so much that Marth is the only one capable of performing the big important story tasks-- like opening the door to the prison. I'd had someone else in place in front of the door, only to realize he didn't have the power to use the key. So I had to waste a whole turn so I could then move him back out of position and put Marth there instead. It just felt kind of dumb. (Are we a team or not?!) But no game is perfect. I'm really looking forward to playing more of it. And hating that I decided to start it the night before I have two doubles scheduled so I won't be able to play again until this weekend. ^^'

One last time, y’all. This campaign and these characters have meant so much to me, and this seven hour finale was definitely an emotional rollercoaster. (Yes, I shed actual tears at one point, which rarely happens to me with media. But this is a special occasion.) These liveblogs are nearly as long as the episode itself, so grab a snack! With that being said, here are my very last liveblogs for Campaign 2 of Critical Role. As always, major spoilers below, so beware.

- Veth taking a level in Wizard, god I am really gonna cry ten minutes into this thing... 😭

- We got our first “stay with us” to Essek, I am emo...

- I was fully not expecting to say goodbye to Frumpkin, but now I’m on the verge of tears... farewell dear fey friend (Marisha saying “that wasn’t supposed to be what broke me” me too me too)

- “You’re a good person.” “I could be.” “You are.”

- “I think you’re a good person” I never thought that I’d hear Beau say that about Essek and this genuinely might be what breaks me... she thinks he’s a good person.... redemption is possible.... maybe love is real....

- If I end up crying over wizards, look away

- Jester lifting up Fjord’s arm to snuggle beneath it made me say “awww” out loud 🥺

- VETH GOING FOR A DIP IN THE POND, I AM GENUINELY SO PROUD OF HER

- “Aahhh!! It’s me! Your wife!” I am going to miss Jester’s sending so much

- Okay that accent bit was so funny, I am going to miss all of them so much

- REAL MOLLY IS BACK REAL MOLLY IS BACK REAL MOLLY IS BACK

- Oh but he doesn’t remember them... and Yasha is trying so hard to help him remember, it’s so so sweet

- Something about the way he said “Tealeaf’s nice” made me tear up... I was neutral on Mollymauk early campaign because I went into things knowing that he passed away, but this whole conversation with the Mighty Nein is So Much. Also “Kingsley Tealeaf”

- “Everyone should have a brother” as someone with three of them, I vouch for this 🥺

- a) I love Marion Lavorre (and Jester ofc!) so very much and b) I can’t believe that Jester’s parent trap actually worked??

- “I do not think Exandria is ready for how you’re going to change it” got to me... and it’s also so true. jester has already changed the world just by being kind.

- Good bye Marion... I love and will miss you so much! (And many thanks to Laura and Matt for creating an agoraphic single mother who raised a wonderful child <3)

- Beau and Jester teasing Marion for having a complicated relationship with Babenon reminds me of Caleb saying he has a complicated relationship with Essek...

- “[Caleb] notes how similar Eadwulf and Fjord are” this is Widofjord adjacent... this episode we have gotten Widomauk-adjacent, Widojest-adjacent, and Widofjord-adjacent (and Blumentrio ofc), now come through Shadowgast and we can get a full Bingo on the “Bisexual Maelstrom” card

- Speaking of relationships, I am lowkey into the Fjord/Jester/Kingsley dynamic LOL no one look at me I’m in hiding

- I’M NOT READY TO SAY GOODBYE TO VETH AND CAD 😭 It makes sense and the fact that they have their families back is beautiful but also consider this: I’m sad and I will miss them

- Beau’s dad??? But also Beau being the one with power over her father is so Good, I’m glad that she got justice on that front as well!

- This talk with Artagan... “I didn’t want you to be a god. I wanted you to be my friend.” and in the process my love you created divinity... maybe divinity is the friends we made along the way

- OH SHIT WE ARE GETTING ALL THE VANDRAN LORE TONIGHT I’M READY LET’S GO LET’S GO

- Caleb’s plan for saving his parents... it’s clear he has thought of this so much, oh my darling love 😭

- Caleb burning down his chance to change his past is so symbolic and something he really needed to do, it does make me emotional though

- While I would have loved for Caleb to open his own magic school (especially with Essek, or the Mighty Nein, or someone else as well), I am so pleased that he stays with Veth and that their friendship continues for the rest of their life because again: they mean so so much to me, and in a way they remind me of me and my biological brother (which I never realized before this episode) and yeah. They just make me Emo

- Also. Caleb being a professor was my Number One Endgame Hope for him and the fact that it came true is just so surreal in the best way possible. I’m so used to being robbed of happy endings. The fact that the Mighty Nein all got theirs makes me incredibly happy. A story does not have to be sad to be impactful. Happy stories and happy endings, especially during a time period of tumultuous real life circumstances, have just as much value and meaning and they always will. Caleb is teaching the next generation magic, and he is teaching them to be Good, and he is nurturing them, and that just means so much

- MATT CRYING IS GONNA GET TO ME

- “Let’s do it again” Please, let’s.

- Okay, everyone. I made it all seven hours in one piece with surprisingly minimal tears (though who knows, this might all sink in tomorrow.) I already wrote my thoughts earlier today about how much the Mighty Nein mean to me and how much this show and these characters have kept me holding on during quarantine and today... I’m still not ready to let them go, but I know that I can always revisit to say hello and to say thank you for changing me. Until then though... I love you all more than you could ever know. And for the last time of Campaign 2... is it Thursday yet?
