After Teth

After Teth I imagine that Jesse and Rex bonded a lot. They were just Captain and corporal before. They became besties after...

Little drabble under the cut...

Rex wondered if the venator had always been this quiet.  Aimlessly floating down the corridors as he switched between running his right hand over the cool metal of the walls and picking at the ridges of his blacks for comfort. Or a distraction. Probably a bit of both.  He couldn’t sleep, his small room–usually a sanctuary from the chaos of the ship–was too quiet, too claustrophobic. So he wandered. 

They were a couple days out from Teth and he was still reeling from the loss of Torrent.  Losing just one of his men was never easy.  Losing almost an entire company had nearly broken him.  

He blamed himself.

When the dust had settled and the dead were counted there were six. Just six brothers out of 144 had made it out. Himself, Coric, Denal, Flak, Popper, and…

“Jesse,” Rex whispered, stopping short, hand still pressed to the wall. 

Without a thought Rex turned down the next corridor heading towards the bunk nook he knew Jesse’s squad had occupied.  He hadn’t seen the corporal since the lartie returned them to the venator and panic suddenly wormed its way up his throat.

Jesse was the sole survivor of Suumpir Squad.  As far as Rex knew he’d been left alone, something a good captain should never let happen after a battle like Teth.  He’d never claimed to be one of the good ones.

“Kark kriffing hells, too far up my own…”  Rex mumbled, picking up his pace, worried what he’d find.

What he found was the bunk room door opened a crack letting in just a whisper of light.  Odd that it wasn’t completely shut. 

Pushing aside that thought, Rex swallowed hard as he pressed the entrance button, the door hissing quietly as it opened the rest of the way.  Despite the glow from the corridor behind him, the room was bathed in darkness, the silence deafening. 

Eyes stinging as they adjusted to the dim light, he scanned the room hoping to see the silhouette of Jesse on one of the nine bunks.

Rex’s throat tightened. 

No Jesse. 

He plopped onto a bunk towards the back of the room, slumping forward, and resting his head in his hands. 

It was his job, his duty to protect these men and he’d failed. He’d failed them on Teth and he’d failed Jesse here. 

Rex jumped a minute later as a soft sob cut through the silence.  He squinted trying to find the source when it happened again.  It was coming from the end of the bunk to his left. 

Scooting down he slowly peeked over the edge, not wanting to startle whoever was there. 

“Oh Jesse,” Rex whispered mournfully. He stood coming around the end of the bunk to stand near him. 

Jesse was curled in on himself and rocking. Legs pulled to his chest and arms wrapped around them, Rex could hear little hiccuping gasps as he tried to self-sooth. 

Sighing deeply Rex sat next to him, slowly wrapping his arm around Jesse’s shoulders, and pulling him in close.  Jesse relaxed into him, gripping him like a lifeline. 

“I don’t…” Rex started.  “I’m so sorry…” 

“They’re gone,” Jesse replied weakly, his head resting back against Rex, rocking side to side  “Why are they all gone…”

Rex’s heart ached for him, for all the brothers who marched ahead too soon.  

They sat in silence for a while, Rex feeling warm tears wet the fabric of his blacks as Jesse’s breathing slowed to calm.  He knew he couldn’t leave him alone in the silence of his squad’s bunkroom.

“Come on, Jesse,  let’s get you to the fresher and then the medbay,” Rex said.

Jesse looked up at him in a question, eyes bloodshot and dark.

Rex smiled.  “There’s someone I want you to meet.”

Like with lovers you can just sever it and not have it related to you ever again but with siblings how could you?

You grow up with them you raise them or they raised you you both know how unforgiving the world is to both of you? You would die for them but will hate them for doing the same and yet none of you would regret it and both of you know it. They could be the person you loath the most and miss the most cause you still remember how they sneaked a candy into your hands. You can sever the tie but you can never look away at what you've lost, at whom you've lost because fate doesn't allow you to be together, eating dinners in quiet peace, if only there's another life, another time, where i can make you another plate of pancakes i would im sorry im sorry im sorry —

They are a lot cheaper and easier to set up and use than some home automation smart tech nonsense

They don't need an app (but some models come with optional apps and there are apps that are compatible with most of these)

Many of them use the 433mhz frequency to communicate, which makes most models compatible with each other, even if they are from different manufacturers

The tech has been around for a long time and will be around for a long time to come

You don't have to put any fucking corporate listening devices like an amazon echo in your home

seriously have been thinking about this all night long. call me autistic but the fact that 90% of workplaces the point is not to get your work done and then be done doing it but to instead perform an elaborate social dance in which you find something to do even when you're done doing everything you need to do in order to show your fellow workers that you, too, are Working . because you are at Work . disgusting why cant we all agree that if there is no work immediately to be done. we just dont do anything

i cannot stress this enough: if your reasoning for clowning on the mcu is "they overwork their cg artists and animators" i 1000% guarantee that a show or movie you have been stanning for years also abused their artists and you just haven't heard about it because the production companies aren't in the spotlight like mcu productions are. that cartoon for kids? that incredibly animated movie? that non-marvel superhero movie? i've seen people declare their hatred for the way the mcu treats their workers and then turn around and gush about a show that i know for a fact was hell for the artists attached

and no this is NOT me saying "this means you should stop hating on the mcu uwu" it's me saying you gotta be aware that this shit is an INDUSTRY WIDE PROBLEM. you CANNOT "fix" it by refusing to watch mcu movies and feeling good about it. you have to be aware that it's EVERYWHERE. why do you think so many animation and vfx productions are sourced in canada? in india and the phillipines? we are not unionized.

i know it's hard to face the idea that your favourite show might have been made unethically especially when you've spent so much time hating the mcu for doing the same thing. you don't have to start hating your favourite show. just like...be aware. don't be smarmy about it. don't claim without research that a beautifully animated movie Must mean the animators were not working 16 hour days and weekends. i do think we can fix this 👍 but we can't fix it if 90% of us don't even realize what the problem really is
