Character Profile: Gregorius
Tumblr media
Art by me (main: @diabolical-blue)
Gregorius is a central character in Ambrosia Heights, second in importance only to the main character, Emmaline.
Appearance: Gregorius has bluish-gray skin, yellow eyes with black slit-shaped pupils, long pointed ears, short talon-like claws on all fingers and toes, and not a single hair on his body, not even eyebrows or eyelashes. His height is 7'0" (although he tends to hunch over/slouch a lot).
— 🌹 —
Gregorius is a very quiet man, a “loner” who spends most of his time by himself. In fact, most of his life has been spent in near-complete isolation, locked away inside a belltower on the grounds of the old stone abbey-turned-boarding-school Gravehurst Hall. He was told by his guardian this was a necessity, since most humans in this part of the forest are so hostile to elves they kill them on sight.
But even when he interacts with people who are not hostile to his kind, it is difficult for Gregorius to feel accepted. At seven feet tall, his unusual height makes him stand out far more than he would prefer. Not to mention, his intimidating presence give off the unwanted impression of a threat, a frustrating if cannot-be-helped misrepresentation of the timid and gentle soul inside. But instead of responding with anger to these hurtful assumptions, Gregorius prefers to avoid conflict and tends to be quite forgiving - perhaps to a fault. Thus, he remains withdrawn from society and observes all those happy families and couples from a distance, wondering if his dreams of companionship will never be more than dreams.
And in a world where magic is treated with great caution at best, and distrust or hostility at worst, possessing unfathomably powerful - and sometimes terrifyingly uncontrollable - magical abilities is an unwanted complication in the life of a man who wants nothing more than to live a quiet, happy, normal life in peace.
— 🌹 —
Random facts about Gregorius:
He is an avid reader and one of his biggest obsessions is collecting and copying books, spending countless hours transcribing them by hand to fill his own private library.
Gregorius loves animals and is very gentle with them, but simultaneously is staunchly opposed to keeping any pets of his own. He claims it hurts too much to get attached to something with such a short lifespan.
Nobody, except for his guardian who raised him from infancy, has ever seen him eat anything. If invited to a dinner party, he will just sit there staring anxiously at his plate until the event is over and he can leave.
Gregorius is very particular about his clothing and will quickly revert back to his preferred outfit whenever possible - a well-worn shirt and trousers cut above his knees. He never wears shoes.
He is not gifted with a lot of typical social skills, quickly becoming overwhelmed when interacting with more than one person at once. Even walking down a crowded street has the potential to trigger a panic attack (especially if the specific sounds he hears are triggering for personal reasons related to his past).
He is fairly secretive about his magic powers and claims to avoid using them whenever possible. However, because one aspect of his powers is the ability to heal others, he will go out of his way to help almost any injured person he encounters - even a stranger, and even if this puts himself in danger.
Gregorius is staunchly pacifistic and will usually give the benefit of the doubt to most questionable situations, sometimes at the cost of horrible unintended consequences to himself or others.
One of Gregorius’s most treasured values is family. But just like his pacifism, this can backfire just as disastrously, particularly when the familial relationships he would do anything to protect are closer to cases of toxic codependency instead.
Many people will see Gregorius’s quietness, awkwardness, or naivety and jump to hurtful conclusions about his intelligence. However, although it is true he is inexperienced with much of the outside world (primarily through no fault of his own), he is quite intelligent and keenly observant of the world around him. He just has a slightly different perception of the world which can be difficult for others to relate to.
— 🌹 —
A line Gregorius says in chapter 11 which I think sums up his character pretty well:
[Context: Another character points out how the local villagers have a nickname for Gregorius, “the Monster of Withingham Wood.” He’s basically an urban legend, everyone making up all sorts of assumptions about him without ever seeing him up close. Before Gregorius’s response, the other character was joking about it a little too insensitively, particularly the fact that Gregorius appeared oblivious to the fact that this nickname was referring to himself.]
“It’s not that I didn’t know they were talking about me. I’m not an idiot. I just thought – or I hoped – if I never gave anyone a reason to call me a monster, then they wouldn’t. I know that’s not really how the world works. I just wish it was.”

Live broadcast of ‘Le Sacre de Napoléon V’ on the national channel Francesim 2, hosted by Stéphane Bernard
Tumblr media
(Stéphane Bernard) The Emperor will become a quasi-sacred figure through the anointing: it is a sort of transfiguration. The imperial canopy conceals this profoundly sacred moment because the rite must remain a mystery to the common mortals. We are witnessing a revival of the triple blessing from the Reims ceremonial of the kings of Francesim. Their Majesties, kneeling before the altar, receive the triple anointing from the Pope: one on the forehead, the others on both hands. First the Emperor, then the Empress.
In his prayer, the Pope asks God to bestow the treasures and graces of His blessings upon the Emperor. He prays that the Emperor will govern with strength, justice, loyalty, foresight, courage, and perseverance. The Emperor must combat Evil and defend the holy Christian Church. The Empress, for her part, receives God's support, and that of Christ, to preserve the Empire and the French people for eternity.
Tumblr media
(Stéphane Bernard) Such a ceremonial highlights the spiritual and mystical dimension of the imperial monarchy. It is a moment steeped in tradition, where every gesture, every word, carries deep symbolism, reminding us of the sacred bonds that unite the sovereign to his people and to God. (Mgr. Morlot) Almighty and eternal God, who have decreed that, following the example of David, Solomon, and Joash, the foreheads of Kings and Emperors should be adorned with a diadem, so that, through the brilliance of their gemstones and the splendor of their ornaments, they might serve as a vivid and striking image of the majesty that surrounds you to the peoples while they reign on earth…
Tumblr media
(Mgr. Morlot) … Pour out, we beseech you, your blessing upon these crowns, so that your servant Napoleon and his spouse, who will wear them on earth, may shine with the radiance of all virtues.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Pope) May God encircle your brow with the crown of glory and justice...
Tumblr media
(Pope) ... May He arm you with strength and courage so that, blessed by Heaven through our hands, filled with faith and good works, you may reach the crown of the eternal kingdom…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Pope) ... By the grace of Him whose reign and empire extend throughout all ages and ages. Amen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Napoléon V) Amen.

⚜ Le Sacre de Napoléon V | N°11 | Francesim, Paris, 28 Thermidor An 230
While the bells ring out and the cannons roar, the Emperor and Empress of Francesim are crowned at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. It was broadcast live on television by Stéphane Bernard, the famous journalist for the crowned heads in Francesim.
Beginning ▬ Previous ▬ Next
Amen. (Napoléon V) Amen.

Joseph Octave van der Donckt - Portrait of Albert Gregorius - 1795
Franciscus Joseph Octave van der Donckt (30 June 1757, Aalst - 16 August 1813, Bruges) was a Flemish portrait painter, miniaturist and pastellist. He is also referred to as Jozef Angelus Van der Donckt, as well as several other variations, too numerous to list.
Albert Jacob Frans Gregorius, or Albert Jacques François Grégorius (26 October 1774, Bruges - 25 February 1853, Bruges) was a Flemish-Belgian portrait painter and Director of the art academy in Bruges.
He was born into a poor, laboring family. His drawing abilities were observed by François van der Donckt, a local portrait painter who took him in, gave him his first lessons and helped him enroll at the art academy. Gregorius was there from 1791 to 1793 and won several awards.
In 1801, he went to Paris, where he was apprenticed to Joseph-Benoît Suvée, who was also from Bruges. Not long after, Suvée went to Rome to become Director of the French Academy, but Gregorius was able to find a position in the studios of Jacques-Louis David. In 1805, he was back in Bruges, making preparations to enter the Prix de Rome, but fell ill and was unable to participate.
After his recovery, he returned to Paris and remained until 1835. He soon established a reputation as a portrait painter and formed an association with other expatriate Flemish artists ("De Club van de Belgen"). After exhibiting in the Ghent Salon, he entered the Paris Salon in 1812 and would continue to display there annually until his departure. In addition to the usual French nobility, he is also known for his portrait of August Wilhelm Schlegel, which is now on display at Coppet Castle.
At the age of 61, he received an appointment as Director of "De Vrije Academie" (now "De Stedelijke Academie") in Bruges. He served until 1852, when he was forced to resign after clashes with colleagues, students and city officials over his conservative approach to art. His best-known student was Ford Madox Brown.
Curiously, on his death certificate he was described as a "widower", but his wife's name was unknown. It has been speculated that he was briefly married during his long stay in France and had no close relatives he cared to notify.

the arc of you, which is me (from this)
ohh i'm picturing an ancient rome au... height of the republic where both plebeians and patricians could stand for office. george from long-standing patrician family and alex as a plebeian. they have known each other since childhood and served around the same time but in different legions. afterwards, they both go into politics; george becomes a senator eventually and alex a tribune of the people. the tribune keeps vetoing some trade reform george has been working on, and george corners alex in some tavern, red-faced and breathing shallowly, slamming down some acta that proves that the reform would be beneficial for all in rome. alex tells him to get lost and never attemp to ambush him again.
he finds george in the public bath two days later, tells him how the reform would be acceptable, and enjoys george squirming under his gaze over the steam.

Spinosaurus - share a scene that ends a chapter/story arc/etc
“There is a spiritual justification for violence, my child. No, not only a justification, but a reward for it.”
act 1 finale scene from the iron crown, in which eudossia forms a magical pact with an vengeful churchman. content warning for discussion of religion, specifically medieval views of catholicism.
“The Sancta Sanctorum,” he whispered. “The Holy of Holies. The Pope’s private chapel.”
Eudossia was trembling. She could hardly stand. “Why am I here?” she asked.
Ildebrando strode forward, placing a hand on the wood. “This box represents the Ark of the Covenant,” he said. “Inside are the bones of thirteen saints, including the arm of Saint Lawrence, to whom this chapel is dedicated.” He turned back to her. “My child, do you seek revenge?”
She froze. “We… we are taught to show mercy…”
“I do not ask that to trick you.” His voice darkened. “There is a point where forgiveness becomes passivity in the face of destruction.” He stared at the reliquary box, jaw tightened. “I seek revenge, my child. For everything Pope Alexander told you of, and for everything you told him. Such actions will not go unpunished in the Kingdom of Heaven or on earth.”
Eudossia looked down at her hands. “I do not seek vengeance,” she said honestly, “only that which has become my birthright.”
“Very well,” he said. “It is better that power be in the hands of the righteous than the cruel. I can give you that, but not without your assistance.”
Her heart began to pound. “What can you do that the Pope cannot?”
“Only an act most people are too fearful to commit.”
She began to back away, shaking her head. “What are you implying?”
“There is a spiritual justification for violence, my child. No, not only a justification, but a reward for it.”
Eudossia didn’t know what to say. Everything she thought she knew seemed to contradict what he said, but who was she to tell such an illustrious churchman that he was wrong?
An army of holy men…
“What do you need me to do?”
“I have planned this for many years. When the Emperor has passed, his heir will grow to be a man loyal to God. All I have been waiting for is someone who will defend the church from the enemies that may be made along the way. With the power given to you, you could be our chief protector.”
This was it. This was the vision shown to her—the crown, the lance, the army—placed in her hands for her to take.
All that it cost was the life of the Emperor. Her uncle.
She thought of little Heinrich then, how he had endangered himself in order to save her. He must have known what his father was doing was wrong. He must have heard his mothers screams as she watched her brother murdered. This act would make him king, and Eudossia margravine. She thought again of her own father’s death and felt nothing.
“I will do it.”
Ildebrando nodded. “This, my child, is why I brought you here.” He took her hand and brought her in front of the reliquary. “I need you to swear to me your fealty, as a vassal does to his lord, upon these bones.”
Eudossia swallowed, her mouth dry. An oath sworn upon holy things was a costly thing to break. Its price was the fate of one’s soul; and more immediately, pain. The more holy the object, the more suffering it would inflict. To betray fealty promised upon such a reliquary, filled with the remains of some of Christendom’s holiest saints, inside the chapel of the Pope himself, would be to invite torture so agonizing that one would rather be dead. Only the highest of holy men could undo such oaths. Only the Pope. Only God.
But she wanted it. The crown, the army–
“Only if you swear to me in turn,” she said. “You will ensure that I am given my father’s lands, and you will never come to attack me.”
He did not even hesitate. He placed his hand upon the reliquary. “I swear.”
Eudossia swallowed. “And what shall I swear to you?”
“Swear to me as a vassal does to his lord. Swear that you will obey me in all that I command you to do.”
She was shaking. He had already made his oath, without hesitation or distrust. It would be cruel to refuse him now. This was an oath all those given power made.
She placed her hand on the reliquary box. “I swear.”
Ildebrando’s smile was wide, pulling at his lips and wrinkling his eyes. “I will not dishonor my oath,” he said. “But my scheme may take some time. For now, hide yourself in a convent. Keep your head low and say your prayers. When the time comes, I will send for you, and you will be given all that you asked for.”
Eudossia’s chest clenched. Yet again she’d be forced into an abbey for who knew how long. This time, at least, she had the promise of release.
For a moment, she resisted. For a moment, she wondered if she could be immune to the binding magic of the saintly bones. In an instant, a force overcame her, far sharper than the strikes of the Pisan men, far more excruciating than any wound. She doubled over, heaving, clutching her stomach. Tears formed in her eyes as she willed herself not to scream.
She grit her teeth, and spat it out.
“I… shall… obey you.”
And then, as quickly as it began, the pain ceased.

♱་༘࿐ O1 ─ WHICH OC IS THE FIRST AT A MOVIE THEATER OPENING NIGHT FOR A MOVIE THEY'VE BEEN EXCITED FOR?
Tumblr media
The Pope really likes theater arts. He's one of the figures who persistents in preserving Italian dramaturgy after a period of decline. He likes many types of theater arts, especially those related to religious elements and Baroque-style romantic comedies. The Pope will usually come one hour before the theater starts just to take a comfortable position and read a literature book while waiting for the theater to start. Sometimes he even asked the opinions of Cardinals and his favorite priest to choose the right clothes to wear to theatrical events.
♱་༘࿐ O2 ─ WHICH OC IS THE PICKIEST?
Tumblr media
He hates nonsense and small talk, his personality tends to be to the point and on the spot, but still very careful on facing things. If he doesn't like something once, it will last forever, even though he had to accept punishment from God, he still won't like that thing. His picky nature will be clearly visible on his face and even if people satirize him, he will become happier and his expression will become sharper. His firm stance sometimes actually makes him look a little arrogant for some parishes. Luckily his beautiful face helped him from beat.
♱་༘࿐ O3 ─ WHICH OC IS THE MOST STUBBORN?
Tumblr media
Ayse had to admit to herself that she's a stubborn woman and difficult to advise. She tends not to want to listen to what other people say and prefers to trust her own instincts, which are either good or bad. Her ambition to free her loved ones from misery drives her to continue moving forward no matter who gets in her way. Even though the woman had fallen in love with a terran, she chose a rotten and mortal death.
♱་༘࿐ O4 ─ WHICH OC LOOKS LIKE A PUSHOVER, BUT COULD ACTUALLY KICK SOMEONE'S BUTT?
Tumblr media
This lonewolf priest sometimes wondered whether his personality was a good thing, all he knew is how it feels to be rejected. He tends to be unable to refuse requests for help from church ministers. But for a special case from the Pope, whom he considers to be the greatest and most powerful representative of God on earth, he would do it as if his life depends on it. But don't get him wrong, even though he sometimes seems obedient, he won't hesitate to kill anyone he considers a menace.
♱་༘࿐ O5 ─ WHICH OC IS MOST LIKELY TO EXCITEDLY TALK ABOUT HOBBIES?
Tumblr media
This cheerful beautiful girl will never stop talking about things she likes. Starting from collecting ancient accessories, painting, holding tea parties, picking flowers, visiting abandoned places and so on. The chatterbox girl also writes all the pretty memories she has in her diary. Sometimes her step-younger brother, Adam, would even pretend to have an agenda with the Church so he could escape from the endless chatter. But even so, a cheerful beautiful girl can get a little lonely sometimes.
