WORN OUT /1889/ by HANS ANDERSEN BRENDEKILDE
It's a very touching painting: an exhausted laborer collapsed in the fields from extreme fatigue, a young woman yelling for help, probably his daughter. This dramatic moment shows the harsh realities of the agricultural life and the toll of physical labor.
The artist focused on a detailed and naturalistic representation that would bring out the harsh reality of the poor workers. The composition makes use of strong geometrical shapes; with the figures forming a triangle to guide the viewers' eyes through the painting.
Brendekilde captures exactly how desolate the subjects' lives are with his choice of muted and dull colors. The earthly tones contribute to the extremity of desperation and exhaustion. He deftly portrays the clothes that are worn out and the coarse texture of the surroundings, making the depiction of the hard life very three-dimensional.
Created during a period of social change in Denmark, it reflects the battle of the working classes against the effects of industrialization on the rural communities. It is a critique of the harsh conditions that laborers had to bear in a still feudal society.

Urban Legend
I think I’ve turned into an urban legend, I mean, I went out to do groceries today with my partner, and there were these two kids playing on the road on my way back home that noticed something weird in me, one kid tried to call my attention because I stopped walking to admire a cat of his, that was a beauty by the way, he screamed hey man, hey man, hey man, louder every time, and the other kid said to him it’s a girl, and he just said no way! like gasping and shit, I contained my laugh and kept walking like I wasn’t there, my partner was laughing his ass off, the little girl kept talking; did you know that there’s a girl who likes to dress as a boy and lives here? Like I was some sort of magical creature out of a Hans Andersen world, and I think there’s a lot of people that noticed, I live in a very, very small town, so rumors fly, definitely I do not pass, maybe for that little boy I did, and I’m grateful for that, but for adults obviously not, and I do not try anymore lol, I kinda accepted that I will not pass, my peace of mind is way more important now than the fact of passing, I should love me the way I look now, who else would? Maybe in the future someone would call me handsome, and I would smile wider than ever before

The décor by Leon Bakst is simplicity itself, and comes somewhat in the nature of a challenge to the ballet of former days which relied so much for its success upon the crowding of the stage with expensive and unnecessary costumes and properties. Here, then, is the ante-chamber of a ball-room conveyed simply by a deep blue back-cloth, at the top of which runs a broad black and gold frieze. The sole furniture, two quaint little brown sofas.
The immense sweep of curtain and the extreme simplicity of the mise en scène serve both to focus the figures of the dancers and allow the eye to receive the complete impression of their every movement. Not for an instant do the players suggest real people, rather do they call to mind a fairy tale from Hans Andersen where nursery playthings, for a brief period endowed with life, seek to mimic the worldly passions of the human being with whom they dwell.
Cyril William Beaumont, Carnaval, Impressions of the Russian Ballet (London: C. W. Beaumont, 1918), 5-6.
