I have no idea why Howl's Moving Castle is trending but it might be a good time to share that last week, at the bookstore, I saw this gorgeous new paperback cover?? Like this is such an upgrade from the weird green and purple one!

At least with this super edition is appears to be more like Tigerheart’s Shadow and that it ties into the main arc so hopefully we won’t tread too much of the same ground with Ivypool (that’s probably the biggest issue with the more recent ones). Like we’ve known her since she was a baby there is literally no need to retell happened in OOTS. The only backtracking I would accept if it covered her feelings towards the end of TBC.
i have.....very mixed feelings about these types of se's. firm believer that the super editions, field guides, and mangas should only be supplementary optional material. you should never have to buy them to get the full story of an arc.
while i enjoyed tigerheart's shadow, i agree with the general negative pushback it got at being a story that was needed to understand a major event in avos (leadership change). i definitely agree that new material and no backtracking would be for the best, the fact onestar's confession, leopardstar's honor, and ripplestar's uh fuck i forgot the rest of his super ed- HOME IT'S HOME ripplestar's home are just retellings of the same events but worse is embarassing

Book Review #41 of 2024--
Tumblr media
Mistletoe Season by Sheila Roberts, Kathleen Fuller, and Pepper Basham. Rating: 2.83 stars (averaged).
Return to Mistletoe by Kathleen Fuller--2.75 stars. The Mistletoe Prince by Pepper Basham--3 stars. Say No to Mistletoe by Sheila Roberts--2.75 stars.
Read from June 30th to July 3rd.
Before I get into the review, a quick thank you to both NetGalley and the publishers over at HarperCollins Christian Publishing for allowing me access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review. In Mistletoe Season we have three separate Christmas stories: Return to Mistletoe following two middle age main characters who are given a second chance; The Mistletoe Prince following a prince trying to change his ways and a down to earth country girl who impacts him; and Say No to Mistletoe following a writer trying to avoid her past mistletoe mistakes by just saying no to mistletoe this year. Mistletoe Season comes out on October 1st and is available for preorder now.
I want to start my review by saying that I had absolutely no idea this was a Christian based set of stories when I requested the ARC. I didn't even know for sure that it was until I went to look up the publisher for it. I wouldn't have requested this ARC if I knew that it was going to be so heavily influenced by Christianity. So, to a degree, the rating for this one is partially my fault. All of the stories feature Christianity and the main characters' relationship to their faith and their morals. Outside of that, I found that most of the stories were too saccharine for my tastes. Maybe it's because the stories weren't long enough to fully dilute it, but man, was it hard to read just how sickly sweet these romances are. I also found the characters to be over the top for me. None felt grounded in reality in any way--these characters were more like caricatures to me. I had trouble with certain topics the authors chose to sprinkle throughout their stories: one was discussing how she looked so much better now that she lost weight and every time she so much as looked at a cookie we had to hear about how she was resisting temptation, another was discussing how she was such a tomboy and how she had to grow up and become a real woman and wear dresses and heels. It all felt so narrow minded and unhealthy to me.
As far as the romances go, I felt like I could root for these characters and their love. I also felt like the stumbling blocks the relationships went through made sense for the characters and their struggles. For the Christmassy rating this year I would say I give Return to Mistletoe a 3 out 5 poinsettias, The Mistletoe Prince 4 out of 5 poinsettias, and Say No to Mistletoe 2.5 out of 5 poinsettias. Given how short these romance stories were and the other plot points the authors focused on, I'd say this still felt like a pretty Christmassy short story collection.
Overall, I think I'm just not the audience for this one (which, to be fair, is mostly my fault for not doing more research before requesting it). I think there is a definite audience for this short story collection. I think if you're looking for a holiday romance with no spice then this is just the book for you.

'From Under the Truck' by JOSH BROLIN
JOSH BROLIN From Under the Truck November 19, 2024 Harper From Josh Brolin, a unique and decidedly un-celebrity memoir, by turns affecting, funny, uncanny, and unforgettable. Weaving a latticework of different strands, moving back and forth through time, Josh Brolin captures a life marked by curiosity, pain, devotion, kindness, humor. He recounts an unconventional childhood far from…

Being an author with business smarts makes me feel crazy.
I see the business rules of status and marketing apply to traditional publishing. With my eyes.
Agents talk market fit, do calls for "diversity," but marginalized authors say rep is rare. Yet we have no transparent data on it. In fact, we have no transparency into anything trad publishing does until years later, with online aggregates.
Which end up being damning as all hell.
Not to mention junior employees are leaving in droves and even the HarperCollins Union is on strike! How can we trust that trad pub isn't stuck in old-guard ways when its junior workforce is struggling to meet fair wages, or leaving??
I have seen with my eyes that clout can buy an author career. Rich people barf books. Having family in PR wins. Republicans buy NYT Bestseller Status. Internships make wins, which means generational wealth is a factor.
But bringing this up yields crickets. Static.
I feel like I'm being gaslighted by an entire goddamn industry???
