I don’t want to poke the bear but I would like to say that the Soft Glow filter turned up to max, ethereal music, and echo effect on the elves of the 00s did not age well and would not fly with audiences today.
That scene at the end where Frodo wakes up and Sam and the gang come in and the emotional theme music plays over the gauziest vfx I have ever seen was a teary-eyed moment when I saw it in theaters but looks SO dated now it’s just a meme.
They had to update the visual look of the IP so it didn’t get ripped to shreds by viewers who aren’t Tolkien purists.
At least they are using more than five real actors this time, unlike the Hobbit movies.

You know....
Ive seen star wars....like all the older movies....
But ive retained like no information about them outside of common pop culture references
Like one year on May 4th there was a channel doing a star wars marathon and my dad had it on in the living room all day
And I sat in the living room and watched all of them cuz my best friend at the time was really into star wars
And all I remember about that day is random out of context scenes from the movies and extreme boredom and being so understimulated the entire time that I spent like half of one movie hanging upside down off my couch
So for all intents and purposes I did not watch star wars

Since it's my birthday my friends got me the amazing gift of 'watching the Wheel of Time show while occasionally stopping to discuss/let me loose my mind' for which I am incredibly grateful. A few random observations from this time through, as I attempted to view it through the lens of the entirely WoT uninitiated (as my friends are)-
The group shots, where the camera passes from one of the Emond's Field 5 to another, do this clever trick where Rand is never actually standing on his own. He's always standing beside or behind someone in one of these shots, so the camera doesn't actually have to cut or pan away from someone else to get to him. This serves the purpose of highlighting him in contrast to his friends, but also to subtlety downplay his presence to the audience, and build up to the Dragon reveal in episode 7 very effectively.
The cinematography in general is so exceedingly rich and delicious- the stark white of the Whitecloak camp contrasted with the bloody reality of their actions. The bright primary colors used to make the Aes Sedai visually pop and feel magical and strange, even as they are dressed (for the most part) practically for their traveling (a complaint I had about the Witcher, aside from everything being brown and grey all the time, is that the mages show up to battles dressed in ballroom dresses instead of you know, clothing that would make sense). The subtle use of lighting and camera angle to create a sense of vast isolation of Shadar Logoth, fear and danger in the Ways, and cramp sweltering heat in the Blight.
Moiraine's opening narration in episode 1 is essentially a summary of the information we get from one of the epigraphs at the ending of the Eye of the World prologue, to whit:
"And the Shadow fell upon the land, and the world was riven, stone from stone. The oceans fled and the mountains where swallowed up. and the nations where scattered to the eight corners of the world. The moon was blood and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the shadow, and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon." - Aleth nin Tearin alta Camora, The Breaking of the World, author unknown, the Fourth Age "The world is broken. Many many years ago men who where born with great power attempted to cage darkness itself. The arrogance. When they failed, the seas boiled, mountains where swallowed up, cities burned, and the women of the Aes Sedai where left to pick up the pieces. These women remembered one thing above all else, the man who brought the Breaking of the World. And him, they. named Dragon." - Moiraine
This makes me suspect their was an earlier version of the script that actually used the epigraph (maybe even both of them). I have mixed on feeling on this, as the epigraphs are one of my favorite artistic choices of Jordan's and really help emphasize the history and depth of his world, but I think filtering it through Moiriane and making it slightly less opaque was a smart choice to convey the information to the audience. I also think this works on a character level as well- here is Moiraine's understanding of this information, shaped by her biases.
Every re-watch also makes me more and more comfortable in my 'the show is a future/past turning of the wheel from the books, the broad events and truths being the same, but seen in one of those endless variations we hear about' interpretation of the series. The heart of the story and characters is the same, and the broad strokes and framework are the same, but it's in the details where things emerge as different. This interpretation has the benefit of fitting really really well with the meta-narrative stuff Jordan always liked to pull, and in freeing I think the show expectations of being a one-to-one recreation.
That said I defiantly felt the cracks in the final two episodes as a result of the Covid shutter and loosing Barney Harris more strongly this time- some of that being that this is my first re watching of season 1 since I've seen season 2. You can practically see the things they wanted/planned to do that had to re-worked because of circumstances beyond their control. Mat's absence in the group argument scene (and the 'I am so tired of you two fighting over her' line that was clearly meant to be Mat's), as well as the lack of bigger/more cohesive battle scene in Tarwin's Gap. You can also tell they hadn't quite figured out how they where going to re-work season 2 yet given that the ending for season 1 had to be changed last minute (for example, their is no reason for Moiraine to just outright admit that she released Lan's bond unless they hadn't yet decided that was where their arc was going yet).
I think the show does an exceedingly good job of structuring it's exposition to the un-intiatited, trying to stagger it so that audience is largely learning new things in pace with the characters. I know people where frustrated that things like the War of Power have yet to come up in earnest even in the Latra and Lews scene, but I think the slow and steady reveal of things matches both the core idea of 'their is always more you don't know', and trying not to overwhelm the audience. My friends had no trouble following what was going and picking up the bigger implications/subtext that underpins a lot of information. 'But why did the Dragon try to cage the Dark One? It doesn't seem like it was that simple.' came up a few times especially.
The detail that what jump-starts Perrin's wolf brother connection is having his wound healed/cleaned by the wolves in that scene from episode 2 is so incredibly clever, and a good twist on the traditional 'werewolf bite' mythology.
I love the deliberate choice to incorporate so many random ruins and remnants of things in the background of shots. Not just the 'dilapidated stone buildings' that the characters camp in, but things like the trio of carved faces that Egwene and Perrin run past while fleeing the Whitecloaks, or the boundary stones Mat and Rand pass on the road, or even just the small carvings and pillars scattered about the cave where they are holding Logain. It all helps to make you feel that ancientness, that brokenness of this world more effectively.
The reoccurring use of the Dragon's Fang to symbolize violence and destruction: the Trollocs using it as a scare tactics, it appearing in the blood in the pool after Nynaeve kills the Trolloc, being burned into Siuan's ruined childhood home....and the way that contrasts with it's use in the finale episode, when we see it whole and unbroken in the seal/yin yang symbol for the first time was really really clever. One of my friends actually gasped out loud and went 'oh' at the first shot of the whole seal when it clicked.
The show does an exceedingly good job of maintaining that core idea of the series that it's about our relationship to violence- violence never being casual or simple or easy, but always raw, hard and bloody and a little bit ugly. EVen subtle things like the way the show depicts Moraine hurling stones at the Trollocs with uncomfortable frankness, trying to literalize what in most fantasy media would be an abstract. Take it from I cast stone 2, to I inflict horrible blunt force trauma on another creature. And of course everything re: Perrin and his ax.
I have more thoughts, but I think I'll save some of them for after we watch season 1, because they relate strongly to stuff from there.

(Y/n's P.O.V)
Fixing my two piece outfit, which consisted of a corset and flares, I stood by the stage as James Corden spoke to the audience.
Having known James for years due to both being from the UK, it was practically tradition for me to come onto his show every time I produced a new album.
Walking to the sofa, the cheers of the audience filled my ears as my long term best friend smiled at me teasingly. What was that all about?
“Hello Y/n, it’s been a while since the last time i’ve seen you” He beamed his arms going up in the air dramatically, bringing me in for a massive bear hug, this man was basically my older brother in the industry.
“I know I know, i’ve been pretty busy with the album and promotions, you know how it is”
“So this is your new album, Waves” James pulled out the new vinyl I produced, the cover a deep blue resembling the ocean, ripples towards the outer corner with a girl seeming to be drifting along in the middle.
“Tell us, what’s it about? Because the artwork itself is so unique”
“Well it’s kind of a long story? Growing up I always loved seeing the ocean, the moon, all that sorta stuff. My greatest thoughts or genuine happiest moments are by the ocean or looking at the moon. So these songs are supposed to resemble the emotions I felt in those moments if that makes sense” I explained, trying to choose my words carefully, knowing damn well my album had a complicated enough origin story.
“That’s brilliant, I actually can’t wait to hear the songs, when’s it come out again?”
“SEPTEMBER 22ND SO PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDARS” I shouted at the audience laughing,
“Alright now, how about a game?” James said cocking an eyebrow up, holding a projector clicker in his right hand.
“That doesn’t sound good” I replied nervously, my hands going to cup my own face, as I watched the words 'Who would you rather?' pop up on the massive screen behind us.
“Oh crap I already know what you’re doing”
“The rules of the game are simple, I show two famously handsome men and you choose between the two”
“Alright alright lets go” I waved dismissively, turning my body sideways to look at the screen.
“Harry Styles or Zayn Malik”
“See i’ve collaborated with both and they’re both such amazing people and artists-“
“This isn’t about professionalism love, who would you choose to marry?”
“Eh uh- probably Zayn?”
“Alright Zayn Malik, or Chris Hemsworth?”
“Chris Hemsworth, i’m sorry Zayn but that man is a dilf”
“Chris Hemsworth, or Anthony Mackie”
“Anthony Mackie, he makes me laugh”
“See isn’t this game easy?” James asked showing that I had nothing to worry about
“Anthony or Henry Cavill”
“Henry Cavill”
“That was quick Y/n”
“Yeah yeah i know, can you blame me though?”
“Henry Cavill, or Sebastian stan?”
“Henry”
“Henry Cavill, or Tom Holland”
“You of all people should know i’m sticking with Henry to the end James, that man is perfection”
“Oh really”James quirked
“Hell yeah”
“Have you met him before”
“ONCE, and it was on the premiere for The Witcher, he smiled at me for a good three seconds” I fan-girled, feeling my stomach start to bubble up with butterflies.
“Right well here’s your second time then, COME ON OUT HENRY!”
“Hold on wha-“
Turning towards the side stage I saw the one and only Henry Cavill, smiling and waving at the audience as he walked towards James and I. Looking back at James, I felt myself melt knowing he did this on purpose, he knew Henry was my major celebrity crush.
“Henry you can sit beside the lovely Y/n there” Within seconds I was no longer alone on the sofa, Henry’s hand laying across the back of the chair making me squeal internally.
“So Henry you’ve been listening in haven’t you?”
“Indeed I have”
“This is so embarrassing” I cringed, my head falling into my hands as laughter surrounded me from both the audience and the two men beside me.
“i’m quite flattered love to be honest, it’s not everyday a gorgeous woman like yourself seems to be interested”
“Shut up you’re Henry Cavill, you’ve got trucks load of women waiting to even see you” I snarked back jokingly, finally making eye contact with him for the first time since he joined us on set.
“Well, they’re not you are they?” He replied back cheekily, his flirt not going unnoticed with the whole crowd 'oo' ing at our interaction.
Deciding not to even try to respond back I looked back at James who had now stood up, gesturing us to follow him to a nearby table.
“Hell no James, you’re a prick for this” Standing a few feet away, I saw the dreaded 'Spill your guts or fill your guts' set up, multiple dishes covered up with three chairs.
“Oh come on Y/n, it’s all part of the experience, just because you’re my fav doesn’t mean you get off that easy”
Huffing out I walked towards my seat, only to have it pulled out by Henry who sent me a devilishly handsome smirk before I thanked him
“Okay Y/n, i’m going to give you the Bull's penis” James laughed turning the table towards me, both him and Henry grimacing at the sight of the thing.
“Ugh how fitting” I joked prodding at it with my fork, my throat already closing up at the thought of even swallowing that thing.
“Okay your question is, what attracts you to Mr.Cavill here?”
“You’re such a prick James, I really don’t wanna eat this penis.”
“Well then answer the question”
“First off he’s fit, from what i’ve heard from mutual friends he has such an adorable and loving personality and he has a cute dog” I finished looking at James, trying to avoid the visible smirk on Henry's face from the side.
“Okay, Henry I give you the Cow's tongue” I squirmed, rolling it towards him as he took in a deep breath, then sat up right to his full height which was even more intimidating.
“The card asks, what’s your ideal woman?”
“You” He answered bluntly, his arms crossing over his chest in victory,
“B-but you don’t even know me”
“That’s what you think gorgeous”
“Wait what do you mean-“
“Anyway lovebirds hate to interrupt you, but it’s my turn” James laughed leaning forward onto the table, grimacing when he accidentally touched the bird sperm
“Okay James you’ll get the bird sperm then for being a cockblock” Henry sighed out, his hand going out for a card which he dropped onto the floor.
“Silly me” He chuckled deeply, but when he came to sit back up his hand dragged up my leg under the table cloth, my body freezing at his touch, in a good way. Tingles spreading through all my nerves.

The morning air was crisp; the heady smell of berbercane fruit flooding Yennefer’s senses as you meticulously peeled the dressings from her chest and shoulder. Once white, it was dusty pink and sticky with drying blood. Which was good, even if you weren’t satisfied with the raw flesh knitting itself back together. Her potion had served to only hasten the process but not enough.
“If it begins to burn or you feel weak, tell me,” you commanded, concern softening the sharp bite.
The genuine worry bleeding into your words left Yennefer’s heart aching though she couldn’t blame it on the wound marring her chest, despite valiantly wishing to. There was something beautiful and disarming about a Witcher caring so diligently for a woman she’d never met before. No coin could forge such dedication and warmth; if you simply cared about the gold, you wouldn’t be touching her with such reverence.
As though you worried she’d break beneath your fingers.
It was odd. It’d be so long since she’d felt a kindness such as this before. In Aretuza, there had been a sisterhood but no real gentleness. No care. Most mages did not truly care when a sister went missing unless it affected them. And while she was certain Tissaia loved her in her own way, it often seemed… superficial.
Even Istredd was a lie, in the end.
Fingers brushing across her cheek brought Yennefer from her thoughts, eyes focusing to meet your questioning gaze.
“Are you okay?” you murmured, separating the callused, sword-worn appendages from her warm flesh. “You seemed… somewhere else.”
“I am fine,” she promised with a watery smile, carefully fixing her tunic and cloak back into place. “I was just lost in my thoughts. I am not used to being cared for, much less by a near-stranger.”
Chuckling, you stood from your kneeling and offered her your hand. “I doubt it feels any odder than it does for me to care for a human. I can’t remember the last time I helped someone without coin involved.”
Accepting the gesture, she watched you wander off to your grazing horse. “I suppose you should fulfill your contract with the Oxenfurt people before we venture off into the wilds?”
You rolled your eyes, tossing the saddle over Lyrium’s back, gesturing for the beast to rise. You settled your bags and Yennefer’s along the back, checking their sturdiness before glancing at the violet-eyed beauty. “Unfortunately. It’s a simple case of drowners roaming the nearby river. Apparently some children wandered down there and… you can imagine.”
Yennefer winced sympathetically.
“C’mon,” you waved her over to Lyrium, a mischievous smirk upturning your lips. “Can’t have an injured woman walking when there’s a perfectly healthy mare in front of ‘er.”
Before she could argue, you grasped her hips with firm, confident hands and lifted her up onto the beast’s back. Her shrieks of indignant surprise nearly sent you stumbling back with laughter but you managed to keep yourself upright, barely avoiding her flailing feet as she tried to adjust herself upon your horse.
“You could have simply asked,” she admonished, watching warily as you swung up behind her. “Is this how you treat all the women in your company?”
She swallowed back a gasp as hot lips brushed the shell of her ear, your hands taking the reins with practiced ease.
“I assure you,” you hummed lowly, “I can be incredibly gentle if a woman wants. All you have to do is ask, biauté.”
Beautiful.
Yennefer’s cheeks went warm with color at the term that fell so easily from your lips. It wasn’t uncommon for people to find her beautiful now, since her ascension, but a brief wonder crossed her mind.
Would you have thought that before?
Arms bracketing around her as Lyrium began her trek back to the dirt trail, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to know.
-X-
The journey to the river was quiet, Yennefer’s head tilted back slightly as she bathed in the morning sun. You were completely aware of the intimacy of your position – practically embracing her while leading your mare onward, her dark locks tickling your scarred cheeks and the smell of lilac and gooseberries filling your nose – but it was the safest place for a non-Witcher these days, should they be traveling on horseback together. Any dumb bloke with too much mead in his veins and a worn crossbow might see her as a target and you’d hate to spill blood so early.
It didn’t help that guards and villagers alike were shooting you nasty glances as you neared your destination. You’d even considered kicking one in the head when they called her a “mutant fucker” under their breath but they weren’t worth the unnecessary spectacle that would surely ensue.
“When I slide off Lyrium, take her a few paces away from the riverbank and wait for me,” you instructed as the sound of drowners met your perked ears. “She doesn’t spook easily so she shouldn’t buck you.”
Yennefer nodded, hands sliding over yours atop the reins. “Be careful, Witcher.”
As the beasts noticed your horse, you lifted from Lyrium with effortlessness and dropped gracefully to the ground, drawing your silver sword before your feet ever touched the dirt.
“Let’s make this easy, yeah?” you taunted the screeching creatures. “I’ve got places to be and you… well. You’re just ugly.”
Knocking two of the charging beasts back with a burst of fire, you rammed the silver blade through a third one’s chest. Shoving it off, you lobbed another’s head off with a flourish, dodging the droplets of blood that flew past your face. It was obvious this was a dance you’d perfected over the years, utterly unbothered by the creatures attacking you.
Yennefer was enamored by the delicate footwork and elegant swordsmanship. To most of the world, it would be a daunting task to rid Oxenfurt of the creatures but you made it seem like child’s play. Never blinking or faltering, you were vanquishing them without a single hesitation.
It left an unfamiliar burning in her stomach, one she hadn’t truly felt in decades.
As the last beast fell, you smirked triumphantly and her heart dipped into her belly. Employing you to help her on this quest might be her absolute undoing…
Wiping the blood from your blade with a handkerchief, you slipped it back into its sheathe and crossed the river to your horse. The smell of something heavy and divine met your nose but you were oblivious to the source, riled up from the successful hunt.
Catching Yennefer’s gaze, you were stunned at how dark and glorious her eyes looked in the high sun. It almost seemed like she wished to devour you, but you hurriedly dismissed that thought as wishful thinking.
“Just need to return to Lord What’s-His-Fuck and then we begin our search for your werewolves,” you announced proudly, reclaiming your seat behind Yennefer and snagging the reins from her tight fists. “Are you alright? You seem tense.”
“Fine,” she replied in a clipped tone, clearly unwilling to elaborate despite it serving to only pique your curiosity.
You considered pushing but it wasn’t your place. She was paying you to slay a werewolf, not speak about her problems. If she wished for you to know, she would tell you in her own time.
Besides, you were far better at listening.
-X-
Tossing the coin purse in the air as you ventured out of the lord’s gaudy, snobbish abode, you were satisfied with the reward hoisted in your tight grip. He’d paid a hefty amount for something that required little skill – for a Witcher – but he’d never know and you’d never tell. What good would it do to rub salt into the wounds of a grieving man?
And more importantly, you weren’t a charity so it was best for you both. He received his justice and you earned your coin. All was balanced in the world, if only for a moment.
Finding Yennefer among the crowds of commoners was simple enough. Lyrium was a large beast and frankly, the sorceress set your senses ablaze so tracking her down took no time. Chatting with an herbalist, it was clear she was disappointed by his supply of ingredients though her demeanor never changed.
“Thank you for your time,” she smiled graciously, relaxing as you settled at her side. She’d known you were coming the moment your eyes fell upon her, the unseen caress a wisp across her form.
The herbalist’s smile grew tight with panic as he realized who – or rather, what – you were. It was frozen to his cheeks but the fear was evident and glaring. Or, maybe it was distaste. You didn’t know nor did you care. Humans were all the same in places like this.
Yennefer frowned at his sudden change, a flurry of furious words lingering on the tip of her pointed tongue. To fear you for simply existing seemed ridiculous, considering you’d vanquished their drowners and most likely solved a dozen other problems for them during your time in Oxenfurt.
“Some drowner bodies down by the river,” you informed him without sparing a single glance. “Might want to find an alchemist to go collect the important bits before they rot or the crows pick them clean.”
“O-of course,” he choked out, stumbling away from his stall like it’d caught fire. “Right away.”
Your brow arched. “Do you think he realizes he just left all of things here… unguarded… including gold? The thing us mutants supposedly love more than anything?”
“Bastard deserves it if everything goes missing. Let’s go.” Yennefer spun away from the stall, grabbing Lyrium’s reins as if it was the most natural thing in the world for her as she stalked away from the market. “Bloody cretin running away like you were the drowner.”
Shrugging, you kept pace with the irate sorceress, ignoring the way people practically dove out of your way. “It’s nothing new for me, Yennefer. I assure you. Humans will do as they do. You should know that better than most. This bloody war has put them farther on the edge than they already were. They feared us before. They hate us now but we’re an unfortunate evil they have to keep around.”
“We need unity more than anything in times like these,” she stated with determination, words wavering with idealism and hope, both rare to find nowadays. “Nilfgaard is breathing down their necks and instead of uniting the continent, they’d rather drive out the elves and ostracize those they deem undesirable! And that doesn’t include what humans are doing to themselves. We need peace; we need harmony.”
“I fear we haven’t had that for a long time,” you mused, offering an apologetic half-smile.
Yennefer’s frown deepened and for a moment, you hated yourself for dimming the light of her hope. Part of you was cynical, having met some of the worst people, but you were also a realist. If harmony were possible, it would have already been achieved and yet, all you could do was look at the disarray the continent had fallen into.
“We should find you a new horse while we’re here,” you declared, carefully directing your thoughtful companion towards the stable. “It’s surely better than being forced to ride with me. Your luck, some dumb sod might shoot a bow at me and hit you instead.”
Yennefer’s yelp of startled laughter was cut short by the sound of blades being drawn and you paused, Lyrium neighing unhappily at the abrupt motion.
“Where are you going, freak?” a nasty, nasally voice pierced your ears, earning a wince of pain as your ears protested such a horrendous sound. It was unpleasant, grating to every fiber of your being. “We don’ want yer kind ‘ere!”
Pivoting to face the knights creeping towards you, a humorless smirk greeted them. “Simply helping the lord with the drowner problem. Planned to purchase a horse and be on my way. That’s all.”
“That’s all? That’s all? That’s never all when you fuckin’ mutants come scurryin’ about,” another knight spat, spittle flying from his chapped lips. “We should gut you like a fish!”
Hand rising to grab steel, your head tilted mockingly. “I’ve had better men than you try. Want to see what I did to them?”
The stench of fear wafted about in waves, flooding your nose and dragging a genuine smirk forth.
“You know, I’d wager you’ll want to have those trousers cleaned soon, otherwise the smell of a coward’s piss is going to fill the streets,” you hissed, golden eyes narrowing with contemptuous fire.
Yennefer rounded your side, hands ablaze and eyes simmering with fury as she glared at the knights daringly. You nearly flinched away but something kept you rooted, a silent trust resonating within you.
“Let us purchase a mare and go,” she ordered, fists tightening beneath her rage. “Or we’ll kill you and then go make our purchase.”
They shared a single glance and your sword slid free of confines, meeting theirs in a swift parry…
-X-
Hooves beat against the dirt pathway, your horse matching Yennefer’s new mare’s pace comfortably. It would take about a day or so to voyage to Knotgrass Meadow, your first stop in the hunt for a living werewolf. Granted, living wasn’t entirely necessary but you found fresh saliva to be far more potent.
It was just harder to acquire.
Your clothes were dampened from the murky water, the blood having washed away with the river before your ride began. Three mangled bodies had been left in the streets of Oxenfurt, crimson smeared beneath boots and the scent of charred flesh lingering in the wind. The purchase of Galleon had been quick, the stable boy too terrified to do anything besides accept the coins shoved into his hands.
“What’s this talisman of yours for?” you inquired, breaking the hour long silence that had befallen you. “If it calls for such a powerful ingredient, I assume it’s no simple craft.”
Peering at the sorceress, you watched her struggle with an unspoken, internal battle. It was evident she preferred to keep things to herself, like a hand of Gwent cards, but you couldn’t help wanting to know more. You’d never been a curious one, even before your training at Kaer Morhen and yet…
She was becoming an enigma in your life.
“I’m searching for someone. I hope this talisman will help me find her,” she replied prudently, each word a calculated step.
Humming, you nodded. To be chasing something so precious and valuable, you couldn’t help wondering what she must mean to Yennefer. “She must be special if you’re going through all this trouble for her.”
“Truthfully, I have no idea,” Yennefer admitted, eyes trained on the path ahead. “I’ve never met her yet she often haunts my dreams. Calling out to me. Asking me to find her.”
Chuckling lecherously, you smirked. “I’ve known a few women like that before.”
She scoffed in disgust, kicking her foot at you playfully. “Not like that, you dog. She’s too young for such thoughts. I simply… want to find her and understand.”
You could see the tension in her shoulders, the uncertainty in her violet eyes. She was desperately searching for answers in a world that was not kind to people like her and yourself. She needed allies. Friends.
We will find this girl, you avowed, heart aching with something foreign as you remembered the ferocity in which Yennefer had fought – for you. I swear it.

The Dark Crystal Age Of Resistance is a tragically underrated work of art.
Tumblr media
If your a fan of fantasy like Lord of the rings, Harry Potter and Star Wars please give The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance a watch.
Its a prequel series to the 80s movie and it's one of the best fantasy shows in recent years and goes back to classic fairytales and mythical storytelling.
Everything is mostly done with practical effects and only uses CGI where it's really necessary. The show also brings back puppetry and even though none of the character's are humans there's more humanity in this show than most media we get today.
The world of thra is a magical and strange place that you find yourself immersed in, with all the creatures and beuaty of the natural world at full display you find yourself encanted by it.
Tumblr media
The gelfings are really adorable and you can't help but care about them, the main three protagonists have well flushed out personalities and each one has a interesting journey they go on that lead them to start the resistance and the quest to save there world.
Tumblr media
The Skekies are really creepy and make for some pretty great villains. There motivation and interactions are giving just as much time as the heros, they rule thra with cruelty and manipulation, stealing the live force of the planet and the then the gelfing. There some of the most terrifying villains we've gottan in the last few years and I gotta say, I was absolutely horrifying by them.
Tumblr media
This show does a lot of things right and one of them is how it writes the female characters. Deet and Brea (the two female leads) are very feminine heroines who are kind, empathetic, intuitive, clever and strong without it being showed in our faeces. Even when the female characters are warriors or soldiers there femininity is not devalued or see as a weakness. We also have more complex characters like Seledon and the gelfing leaders (who are all female) and it's just so nice to have a fantasy show that handels the female reputation so beautifully.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the same time the male character's are also written with the same amount of care and respect, for example Rian (the main male lead) is a soldier who after finding out the truth about the skekies, is faced with the hard challenge of spreading the truth while dealing with loss and trauma, we see plenty of moments where his aloud to be vulnerable and we see him grow into a strong leader for the resistance.
Tumblr media
We also have Hup who even though he is a side character, is a lovable podling who steals every sence he's in. He dreams of becoming a hero and has such a heartwarming friendship with Deet it's hard not to love him and want more of him.
Tumblr media
All the relationships between the gelfing feel so intimate and pure, wheater there familial, platonic or romantic the show gives us so many beautifully written relationship and dynamics, that add to the emotional core of the story.
Tumblr media
There's also some political drama with the gelfling clans and the skekies as they try to hold on to there power, it's done in a way that both kid's and adults can follow.
The action is surprisingly good for show with only puppets, we have sowrd fights, flying gelfings dropping booms, wild carriage rides and it's really exciting and done well.
There is only 1 season unfortunately but it's still worth the watch, I do have to warn everyone that there is a lot of scary and truely horrifying moments so if your sensitive maybe give this a pass, but there's a balance between the dark and whimsical and there's so many funny and sweet moment's that allow you two catch your breath.
Tumblr media
This series is a hidden gem in the world of fantasy and that's a dame shame because it is everything you could whant from a epic fantasy story that we just dont see a lot of anymore.
I like shows like The Witcher and Rings of power but none of those shows have captured my imagination or sense of wonder like the dark crystal aor did. I have so much love for this beautiful, weird, creepy, wonderful, magical puppet show and I wish it got more recognition for the work of art it truly is.
The Dark Crystal Age Of Resistance is pure magic and deserve so much more attention. It's on Netflix so check it out if your looking for some good fantasy.

I don't watch documentaries on Netflix. I barely watch it but when I do it tends to be shows like Witcher or Umbrella Academy. I do get regular emails off them to encourage me to watch their new shows.
I've had Wednesday, Blue island and now Beckham's documentary pushed hard in my email even though only the first suggestion matches my viewing history.
When they did the meg and Harry doc I did get emails over that.
I've had nothing sent for the Invictus or the other documentary they did about leaders or something. Nothing shows on my dashboard. It just wasn't pushed even a tiny bit to me. I've asked a few friends and the same thing. Even ones who watch documentaries didn't get any emails or dashboard push for anything they've done past their first documentary.
Why do you think Netflix isn't pushing it? I expected their stuff to be suggested and emailed about it because of how much money Netflix is said to have paid them. But nothing, crickets. Unless you search for it their new offerings are not showing up.
That’s a good question. I think they were pushing the Depp documentary instead. They likely thought that would be more popular.

MASTERLIST OF MY AO3 SERIESES
Please don't ask after my Tumblr masterlist. I have it up for those who want to look it over, but it's not a fully functioning one. Most links are either completely broken and claim the post doesn't exist or then they don't bring up all fics on that tag. For example I have some tags with literally hundreds of fics, but tag links only shows you a fraction of it all. Fixing that masterlist would be a HUGE work and would also require me deleting and reposting 800+ works, which is why it's also not been updated since summer 2022. I stopped updating it when I took a hiatus from Tumblr and hid all my posts, and returning those posts made them break. I do not have plans to update my Tumblr masterlist for the time being, if you wish to see all my stuff, use this list instead. I'm sorry if you'd prefer Tumblr but I can't do anything about it, please stop begging me to "fix" my Tumblr masterlist because you'd prefer Tumblr or hate AO3. It is what it is.

Fixing Robert Jordan
Disclaimer. This post has no point to change minds. Your mind is already made up and no one will change it. This is written for the sake of my own mind.
I have watched dozens of fantasy adaptations in the last 24 years starting with the Lord of the Rings movies. My expectations with every adaptation for every book that I have read were simple - finally I will see these scenes and these lines which I love to be shown on screen. I worried what and how much they will change. I never prayed how the adaptation will fix anything from the source material. This was so alien thought - if I am a fan, then why I would want something to be fixed? I am fan which means that I understand why the source material works in the first place.
All of the above doesn’t translate as equal to "I hate changes" or to "I want 1 to 1 adaptation". On the contrary, my most favorite scene from all the 8 Harry Potter films is the scene where Harry and Hermione are dancing in the tent. Scene which definitely DOES NOT exist in the books. In Game of Thrones - there is the masterpiece of “Chaos is a ladder”. One more scene which is not in the books. In House of the Dragons - the masterpiece scene of 2021 is the boring 2 minutes of walking by decaying dying old man. 2 minutes of nothingness which is not in the books. But these two minutes are my best adaptation experience of 2021.
Of course adaptations make changes. The question is not if they make them, but why they make changes. I have never seen fantasy adaptation to make changes with the intention to fix the source material - always to enrich it or because production problems or just because the writers did not care.
For some reason this experience was not mine alone. I have talked with friends, I have talked with strangers and I have read strangers through the years. For 24 years for every new adaptation - Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, the Witcher and so on, no need to list them all - I notice one thing and one thing only: I was not alone in my expectations. And not only I was not alone, I did not witness any alternative. For 24 years. For dozens of adaptations. No, I do not live in a cave. I have never heard the phrase “I cannot wait the adaptation to fix it!“
So it was big surprise to find out the first place where people…. No, actually people who are masquerading as fans, to use the phrase is the adaptation of WOT. If you do not like WoT you would want things to be "fixed" so you could like it, of course. I can expect that from haters of the books. What I do not expect is to hear it from "fans". You are a fan, you know the bigger picture, you know why it works. I do not expect fans to wish the story to be changed because they know it already and it is boring.
My personal view of expectation is to see the story which I read to be shown on screen. That is what I have always dreamt - my favorite scenes and my favorite lines to be heard and to be seen, not read. This is said with the obvious remark "as close as possible" as adaptations cannot, and I cannot stress this enough, cannot be 1 to 1 with the books. Did you have the same expectations for "boring" or "oh, I have already read that" when you watched Harry Potter or Game of Thrones? Why I doubt that to be the case… So why you are doing it now?
The confusion is not about the mere existence of the phrase, of course. Different people, different expectations. And I cannot stress it enough, I am not saying you cannot have different opinion than mine. You are free. The confusion is not that, oh Saint Bela, my bigoted mind cannot accept that my opinion is not the only valid.
The confusion is when it changed? The confusion is why people in the fandom mock with glee a behavior that has been completely normal and accepted for the last 24 years and more. Of course, everyone expects the fantasy adaptation to follow the source material as close as possible, everyone expects the adaptation to honor the source material, everyone judges adaptation to be good or bad based on this merit. What process of adaptation the production decided to take is completely another topic. We talk about audience here.
Why for the Wheel of Time we flipped expectations on their head? Now it is bigoted and disgusting to expect any of the above. The people who have done, again the complete normal socially accepted behavior, now are being ridiculed and mocked that somehow after 24 years they lost the ability to understand how adaptations work. Who decided this to be changed? Why people, who presumably are having common sense, decided that such madness is ok to manifest to normal behavior?
Ok. Fine. You want the books to be fixed. I can accept that. You are free to want it. Again, the confusion here is not to oppress your freedom. The confusion is why you oppress others in the process. Why you act with such arrogance and thirst for blood that you are having the only valid opinion and everyone else are bigots? How I am supposed to react to that sudden illogical and nonsensical change out of a clear blue sky? Why the expectations for the WoT adaptation got them differently?
You are completely aware that 24 years ago people knew that changes are essential and practically unavoidable, mandated both by the constraints of time and medium, but how much is always a balance on thin ice.
Nothing changed in the approach of making adaptations since then. Hollywood makes the same adaptations over and over. The same audience goes to watch them over and over. Meanwhile no new argument, no new information has been discovered that people from 24 years ago have not known it till now. What changed?
Let the Light keep you safe. LightOne
