In their respect, the fairies crowned them for their bravery as the ruler of the flowers, for wasn't it for their sacrifice the flowers wouldn't have been freed.

"They stayed on the right way, even if it meant going against the world." Porco's slurred words were half muffled against the pillow, head buried in it, his eyelids seemed to get too heavy for him to force them open again.

Guilt pierced through you as though Lynera had personally slid her knife deep into your chest. How could you have missed the signs? It’s not like Lynera was known for being subtle.

And then you remembered the sort of person Lanque was. Toxic, rotten, and completely in control of his vices. Lynera would not survive his manipulative scheming. You were anxious just thinking about how swiftly and efficiently he would break her down.

“Is he really someone you’d want to get involved with?” you asked.

“ - what why.” Lynera narrowed her eyes at you. Uh oh. “ - !!! why wouldnt i he is so hatable and and — !!!” She pushed up her glasses and rubbed away her tears. “ - maybe it could help me get over bronya i dont know.”

“Lyn, come here.”

She looked at you questioningly, and when you patted the open space beside you, she mustered up a weak smile and made her way over to you. You pulled her into a tight hug as soon as she sat down, and she squeaked in surprise, her hands hovering in the air before settling hesitantly around your waist.

“Don’t do this to yourself,” you spoke through her curly hair tickling your nose. “Hooking up with an asshole isn’t going to magically make your love for Bronya disappear. The challenge might be enticing, but you and I both know you deserve someone better.” You pulled back slightly and met her stare. “Only idiots fall for someone like Lanque. And you are not an idiot.”

Lynera sniffled, and this time, her smile was more genuine. She nodded and said, “ - maybe youre right."

“Just think on it, okay?”

“And will you think more on what I said before about throwing out these torture devices? You know Bronya would be horrified by the stuff in this room.”

She glanced at the iron maiden, panic blossoming on her face.

“My counseling services don’t come cheap,” he snarked, and you lightly kicked him under the table, earning a disgruntled look as he wiped away the nonexistent dirt from his trouser pants.

”Anyway — pretending I did not just hear that — I realized that I might have stepped on some toes, so to speak.” Tagora quirked his head in question. “It looks like one of my friends is pitch for Lanque.”

“And why is that your problem?”

Damn, leave it to him to be so blunt. “Because she’s my friend, and I don’t want to accidentally get in between whatever fuckfest is brewing? But I also feel like I should. I don’t want her getting hurt by him.”

“What, do they have some sort of history?"

Usually, Tagora finished off his introductions with the offer to call him by his nickname. He always told you that breaking the ice while networking was of utmost importance to him. The absence of such a peace offering was very telling, at least to you. And you could not be more proud, or more relieved. Zebruh would definitely have taken it the wrong way otherwise.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,“ Zebruh said, and turned to look at you with a contemplative expression. “ ♠ I didn’t know you had teals for friends. ♠ ◆ I hope you’re protecting yourself from exploitation, because they are a really ruthless bunch. ◆ “ He glanced at Tagora, the corner of his mouth curled up. “ ♣ Not that I blame you at all, of course; it’s just a teal’s nature, you know? ♣ “

Tagora sat in silence for a moment. You were starting to grow concerned before he smoothly replied, “I commend you for being so socially aware of my caste’s shortcomings. It is rare to meet an indigoblood who is capable of introspection.”

Zebruh nodded sagely. “I take this sort of stuff very seriously. ♣ Fighting for lowblood rights is an honor and privilege that very few can boast about, but I am willing to sacrifice my standing to protect the weak. ♣ “

You reluctantly patted his forearm that rested on the table in an effort to get his attention away from Tagora. It worked splendidly — Zebruh’s eyes lit up at the contact, and he scooched his stool a little closer to your side before throwing an arm around the back of your seat. “He’s really such a good friend to me, Gor Gor,” you forced out, discretely inching away from Zebruh until you sat at the edge of your chair. “Your drink is getting cold, by the way!”

Tagora brought the mug so rapidly to his face that he nearly smacked himself with it. You taught him this trick a while ago, to hide his expression if he was getting too riled up in the presence of someone who would cull him for his disobedience in an instant.

With that taken care of, you poked Zebruh’s side and said, “You don’t have to worry about Tagora. He treats me better than most!” His pleasant grin faded a little. “But not as much as you, of course.”

“ ♥ Your safety has always been my top priority, sweetheart. ♥ “ Tagora choked on his drink. “ ◆ If I don’t look out for you, then who else will? ◆ ♥ And considering how close you and I have gotten, I say this as someone who is as invested in developing our potential quadrant as you are. ♥ “

Tagora was openly glaring daggers at the back of Zebruh’s head. Your Gor Gor Panic Meter was lighting up with the intensity of the Alternian sun — you could sense a meltdown coming soon.

“That’s really so kind of you!” you squeaked. “But remember how we decided to just be friends? Very, very good platonic friends with no pale feelings whatsoever? Remember that, Zebruh?”

“I’m fairly certain her quadrants are being filled these days,” Tagora pipped up, his claws digging into his cup as his diplomatic grin took on a darker undertone.

“ ♠ Really? ♠ ” Zebruh glacially asked, retracting his arm from around your seat. “By who?”

“By me,” he replied with slight bite. “And various other individuals. Surely you must have heard, given that you are so close to her.”

Oh, your indigoblood friend did not appreciate that. “ ♣ Well that’s pretty damn presumptuous of you to say, considering you didn’t let her answer for herself! ♣ “ He shifted in his seat to face you and grasped your hands in a pleading gesture. “ ◆ My dearest companion of unspecified nature, please see this toxic situation for what it really is! ◆ ♥ You deserve to be treated like the queen you are, not silenced into submission. ♥ ”

You stared at him with a deadpan expression. “It’s really not that serious, dude.”

Zebruh sighed dramatically and shook his head. “ ◆ I can’t bear to see you beaten down like this and remain so unaware. ◆ Do you see what I mean about teals now?"

Tagora slammed his drink down on the table none too gently. “I’m terribly sorry for having given you such a poor impression of my character,” he hurriedly said. “And I wouldn’t dare presume that you are capable of ever being wrong about these things, but with all due respect, that is my moir — my associate you are speaking to, and I must politely request that you — th — that you unhand her.”

You were frozen from an onslaught of emotions as Zebruh obliged Tagora’s demand in favor of leaning into his personal space. “You know, I’m sensing very strong hostility coming from you. ◆ I can vibe with that! ◆ ” He tugged on his bowtie and winked. “♠ If you wanted a formidable kismesis, you could have just said so. ♠ ”

Tagora looked like he was ready to faint on the spot from the suggestion. You have never seen him look so pale and scandalized. “Regrettably, I am entirely unavailable in that regard!"

“Oh. ♠ Then you’re just trying to piss me off. ♠ ” He folded his arms in an attempt to appear intimidating, yet his petulant expression made him look utterly pathetic instead. “I came all the way out here to see my best friend, so it’s kind of rude of you to lead me on with pitch flirting and leave me hanging like this!”

You needed to salvage this shitshow immediately. “Didn’t you say you were just passing by?“

Zebruh flushed indignantly. “W — well, whatever! ♣ You should be thankful that I’m even giving you the time of day — either of you! ♣ “ He pointed at you. “In fact, I’ve been nothing but kind and supportive to you, so I think you owe me for my efforts.”

Tagora sputtered in his haste to reply, but you cut him off with a sharp look. He inhaled deeply and slumped back against his chair, his eyes taking on a concerning shade of darkening yellow as he roughly carded his fingers through his hair. “What do you propose I owe you?” you asked lightly.

Zebruh’s eyes widened and he tilted his head in confusion, as though he did not expect you to be so agreeable. He tapped his chin thoughtfully until a smug look overcame him. “I’m feeling pretty hurt by all of this rude treatment. ◆ I wouldn’t mind a chance for you to join me back at my hive for a relaxing feels jam session to discuss how much this exchange has affected me. ◆ “

To you, the statement was utterly harmless — it’s not like you haven’t had a sit down with a friend to talk about personal issues before. But to Tagora, Zebruh may as well have thrown his drink in his face and pailed you right on the tabletop for all to see. His face was practically fluorescing teal, a stark contrast to the eerie orange glow of his eyes. And with the way his teeth were digging into his bottom lip to hold his outburst at bay, you suspected he was about to draw blood soon. Thank the gods Zebruh was turned away from him.

You shot out of your chair and slammed your hands down on the table. “We! We really need to get going, don’t we, Tagora?!” you exclaimed in a wavering voice. “We have to meet with Tyzias soon for your study session!” Zebruh frowned, and you hastily added, “I’m so sorry, we really lost track of time. To answer your earlier suggestion, I’ll have to say no to that, but I am very flattered by the offer! Why don’t you walk us out?”

Zebruh tisked, languidly getting up and stuffing a hand into his pocket. “Fiiine. ♠ It’s not like I was serious anyway. ♠ "

You expertly sidestepped his attempt to wrap an arm around your waist to guide you to the exit, quickly coming up to Tagora as he silently stood and watched the spectacle with no small amount of distaste coloring his sneer.

“We’re almost rid of him,” you whispered conspiratorially, ignoring his sour mood and looping your hand through the crux of his arm.

He nodded stiffly and kept you as far away from Zebruh as possible, situating himself between you two on your way out. You smiled secretly to yourself as you felt him press up against your side, presumably to keep himself away from Zebruh as well. Even in the throes of anger, Gor Gor was still a wimp around highbloods.

The crisp air filled your lungs with much-needed calmness once you stepped outside. Tagora radiated tense energy beside you, staring straight ahead as though in an effort to forget the situation he currently found himself in.

You put yourself between him and Zebruh this time, hoping he would have the chance to cool down while you handled the indigoblood. “Which way are you headed?” you innocently asked.

Zebruh pointed towards the downtown area, where the suburban streets quickly morphed into seedy-looking buildings lit up by neon advertisements. “I was on my way to a hot new club that opened up recently, before I so graciously decided to stop by and see you. ♥ I heard that the owner is a pragmatic rustblood, and I just have to meet him! ♥ ◆ Would you be interested in joining me? ◆ “ He eyed Tagora critically. “I’m sure your friend can get his homework done without you."

You heard a barely-restrained growl beside you as Tagora grasped your hand in his own with a vice-like grip. “I’m sorry, Zebruh, maybe next time,” you said with an apologetic smile, angling your body towards the opposite direction. “Text me all about it later though!”

He pouted and grumbled about not seeing you enough these days, but finally relented in the end, throwing a careless wave as he walked off. You wanted to make sure that he wouldn’t follow you, but Tagora jerked you forward and stormed towards an aimless direction.

“Tagora, slow down!” you huffed, tugging on his hand. “We’re in the clear. You don’t have to power walk us to another continent.”

“There is no place far enough away from that creature," he hissed, coming to a full stop and releasing his hold on you to stare down at his hands in livid contempt. "That disgustingly sweaty palm of his ruined my skin!” He curled them up into fists as they trembled, and his voice began to take on a hysteric edge. "And to add insult to injury, he had the fucking audacity to assume that I would break the law? Like you’re some kind of charity case to me!” he ended in a screech.

“Gor Gor, he’s gone now,” you said in a hushed whisper, hoping to quiet him down as you flushed at his outburst. To your surprise, passersby paid little to no attention to him, going about their day as though this was a normal scene. Considering the violent nature of trolls, you suspected that to be the case.

Tagora groaned and shook his head as he buried his fingers in his hair and pulled so tightly that you rapidly grew concerned for him. You gripped his shoulders and shushed him down, but he barely acknowledged you, throwing his head back as he stared wide-eyed up at the sky with a disturbing expression. “That fucking highblood thinks he can walk all over me,” he seethed, before cutting himself off with a high-pitched giggle. “And he can! He fucking can! Because I’m just a lowly ruthless teal who he feels the need to protect you from, while thinking I would spread my strut sticks for him!"

You balked at the crude statement. “Tagora, no — “

He sucked in a sharp breath and suddenly stilled. Your momentary hope of him finally calming down promptly evaporated as his eyes darkened to an alarming shade of red, his pupils narrowed into thin slits. You flinched when he finally looked at you. “That piece of shit lowlife just couldn’t leave you alone, could he?” he muttered in an eerily quiet tone. “And right in front of me, too. And I couldn’t do anything about it.” He broke off into another round of freaky giggles, no longer looking at you, but looking through you. “I may be just a weak teal, but I can still show him how gogdamn ruthless I can be, because when I sic the drones at him, he’ll be nothing but a pile of fucking ash by then!"

You stepped back as Tagora doubled over in a fit of vicious laughter. Yep, he was absolutely incomprehensible now.

It was your time to shine.

You have prepared for this moment for quite a while, considered all angles of approach and optimal spots for papping. The traditional seated frond hinge shooshpap was standard protocol, considering how squeamish he got whenever you dared to touch his face, but you have kept a killer technique hidden up your sleeve.

You had his lusus to thank for the bout of inspiration. Tagora had overworked himself into a frenzy one evening and ended up borderline passed out on the couch at his lusus’ behest, laying obediently as the ferret meticulously groomed his hair and dug his little paws into tense muscles. You had watched with curiosity, seated off to the side so as to not disturb their bonding moment. Just as you had prepared to slink away, the lusus lightly chittered at you to sit back down, and with a knowing look cast to you, he scritched at the nape of Tagora’s neck.

He had melted into absolute putty for the rest of the early morning. And if his lusus had bequeathed Tagora’s weak spot to you for a purpose, then you were obligated to carry out his wishes.

So while Tagora continued to rant and rave into the night sky, you sneaked up behind him and snuck your way under his long hair to touch the nape of his neck. Tagora froze instantly, like a prey caught in a predator’s grasp. You gave him no time to react, gently raking your nails along the exposed skin in a meandering pattern as you quietly shooshed him and petted his upper arm with your other hand.

Within a split second, all the tension in his frame melted away. His arms dropped to his sides and his head fell forward as he let out a deep sigh, giving you better access as you curled your hand around the back of his neck and stroked it with your thumb. You peered over his shoulder to catch a glimpse of his face, and you were stunned to see how relaxed he looked, eyes closed and mouth slightly open, and a substantial blush coloring his cheeks.

“Did you get it all out of your system?” you softly asked.

“Yes,” he meekly whispered.

“Will I need to resort to more shooshpaps in the near future?”

“No."

You sighed and released your hold on him, coming around to stand in front of him with folded arms. “You’re an absolute nutcase sometimes, Gor Gor.”

Tagora blinked at you, eyes finally settled back to their normal yellow hue. He huffed and looked away, still lightly blushing. “Well. I might have a bit of a problem regulating my temper. If you know a better way to deal with a lifetime of pent-up anger and humiliation brought on by the complexities of Alternian society, let me know.”

“It wouldn’t kill you to smoke a blunt once in a while.”

Tagora glared at you. “It would kill me, and I will kill you if you bring that shit anywhere near me. Bad enough that you come to my hive smelling like that garbage.”

You giggled and smiled impishly. “Looks like I won’t need to.” You wiggled your fingers. “My shooshpaps are an effective tranquilizer, apparently.”

He bit his lip. “How did you think of that move?”

Should you out his lusus as your partner in crime? Better not — you might get some more insight from the ferret at a later date. “I guess I just know you that well. It took a while to figure out your preferences, since you’re so weird about being touched.”

“So you’ve put a lot of thought into it … ?”

“Sure have,” you cheerily admitted, and Tagora’s blush reappeared with a vengeance. “Wow, that’s quite a reaction.”

You expected him to lash out at you in denial, and yet he simply shuffled in place as he rubbed his shoulder, his bang obscuring half of his face from your view. You cocked your head in confusion at his sudden silence —

And you were promptly pulled into a tight hug. Your heart thumped as you stood frozen in shock as he briefly nuzzled the side of your face before pulling away with lightning speed and settling his arms behind his back.

Tagora briefly cleared his throat before saying, “That was … a thank you. F — for caring, and … and doing that for me.”

You thickly swallowed and nodded, slowly succumbing to the realization of what your shooshpap had meant for your friendship. A while ago, you had done the same for Polypa. You recalled how strange her reaction had been, reminding you that she needed to remain professional as she fought back her flustered blushing. And the way she had melted into your touch …

It looked eerily like an orgasm, quickly followed by post-coital relaxation.

“I, um, I’m sorry,” you blurted out, wringing your hands nervously.

He furrowed his brows. “For what?”

”Hilarious."

“Oh, and by the way, I figured out how I’ll fund your expensive taste.” Tagora quirked a brow, and you grinned sneakily. “I’ll be pilfering your swear jar. You owe it a hefty fee after your meltdown.”

He chuckled. “It’s still my money.”

“Not when I tell your lusus about your uncouth, boorish behavior.”

“So you know what those words mean, but not ‘concupiscent’?”

“I can only listen to Galekh for so long before my mental thesaurus gets filled up for the day.”

“Ugh.” Tagora rolled his eyes fondly, and you squeezed his hand without thought, simply basking in how happy he made you.

Almost two months later, she finally gathers up the courage to go up to him. To listen to his stories. Little did she know her life would change forever as she began to wonder if there was a hint of truth to his stories.

The fluorescent lights ricochet off the clean white tiles. Blinking against the annoying glared, you continued down the hallway. Trying to ignore the fact that Devon followed behind you. Your fingers picking at the hem of your shirt, shaking slightly. Each footstep was a shuffle, your padded slippers sliding across the cold and unyielding tiles.

Passing the community room, you noticed the inhabitants staring your way, and you faltered for a moment, wanting to go back into your room. Back into hiding. It wasn’t a safe place. Not anymore. But you weren’t sure you could be here either.

The new medicine, your new rules had you nervous and afraid. It didn’t help that you Devon following your every movement. Devon was your constant shadow, always there when you never wanted him to be. Touching you like he had every right. Getting mad when you shrinked away from his touch.

He hadn’t wanted you to go to the library. The scowl on his face made it clear that he wasn’t happy with it. But you had wanted to see Dean. You needed to see Dean. He was the only normal thing in this place. Or at least as normal as you could get in an asylum.

“Devon!” A voice called out. The voice of the head nurse, a woman stern with a scowl in place at all times. “What are you doing?”

You stopped where you were, watching as Devon made his way to Mrs. Lynch, his scowl almost worse than hers. “I am keeping an eye on Miss Y/L/N, just as the Doctor requested.”

“It’s her free time. Let her be. There are other things that need done,” she ordered. You were grateful for her distraction, but you had a feeling you would be punished for it later on.

“Miss Y/L/N, please keep moving. Devon is otherwise occupied,” Mrs. Lynch ordered, and you scurried to obey. Leaving them behind, you raced down the hallway, running straight into the Librarian.

“Y/N! Please slow down!” She exclaimed, taking a step back. Looking up, you were ready to pass her when her eyes flashed blue.

“What the…,” you muttered, taking another step back, your eyes wide, your heart racing. Quickly her eyes turned back to their normal brown, a frown pulling at the laugh lines on her face.

“Y/N, is everything okay? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“I...I think….I’m just going to...to...find Dean,” you stuttered, racing past her to your usual corner of the library. Wondering if you had actually seen her eyes flash a brilliant shade of blue, or if it was your medicine making you imagine things. Because there was no way a person’s eyes could literally glow like that.

You could see Dean sitting in his usual seat, his journal clutched tight to his chest. His eyes seemed vacant, his entire body rocking slightly back and forth. Your slippered foot making no sound on the carpet floor, you were almost to him when a switch seemed to be flipped inside your mind.

Voices, loud voices echoed through your head, almost as if a radio had been turned on inside your brain. Never making any sense, talking in a language sounding ancient and almost alien. It was the loudest it had ever been, so overpowering you felt yourself falling to your knees.

“Y/N!” Dean called out, dropping his book as you pressed your hands to your temples, trying to block the loud voices. Hands reached up, grasping your shoulders, but you shook them away. The touch was too much with the voices screaming inside your head, and you knew you would do anything to make them stop.

“Please!! Make them stop!” You screamed, your hands tightening against your head, pulling at your hair. Never even noticing the pain as you tried to ease the pressure in your head.

“Breathe. Just breathe,” Dean kept saying over and over, his voice calm. It was the calmness, the even tone of it that had the voices silencing as you realized something didn’t quite right.

The voices faded away as quickly as they started, a giant relief as your head finally quieted. Taking a deep breath, your hands shaking, you reached for the hem of your shirt, picking once again at the loose thread.

“Are you alright?”

“The voices, they’ve changed. Becoming louder, speaking like the people in my nightmare. Dean, what if it’s true? What if I am completely crazy?”

“You aren’t,” he answered, his eyes fluttering back and forth. “This place, there’s something wrong with it. You and I, we aren’t crazy. That’s why they keep changing our medication.”

Calming down long enough, you could see that Dean was in a frantic state, his breaths coming fast, his pupils dilated. He kept licking his bottom lip as he stared your way. “Dean, did they change your medication?”

“They wanted me to forget about Sammy,” he exclaimed, holding tight onto his journal, looking over your head. No doubt making sure there weren’t nurses to overhear. “They gave me more medicine. Telling me that it would make the pain manageable. But my hands don’t hurt! The burns don’t hurt anymore. Just my heart! I miss my brother and my best friend. Why couldn’t I save them?”

It was your turn to comfort Dean, much like he had you. Resting your hands on top of his, you made sure he was looking your way. “Dean, you did everything you could. I know you did. It wasn’t your fault.”

“But it was my fault!” He argued, straightening up, almost knocking you to the floor. “I was supposed to look after Sam. My Dad always said that was my job, and I screwed it up! Now I’m locked in here, and they’re trying to stop me from remembering!”

He stood, reaching down and grasping your hand. Pulling you tight against him, almost embracing you as he made sure you were alone. You tried ignoring the feel of his strong arms around you, the rushed beating of his heart against your cheek. You wanted nothing more than to lean into his touch, forgetting everything that was going on. But you couldn’t. “They’re watching Y/N. Always watching. They don’t like us being together.”

“The nurses?”

He nodded. “Especially Devon. Be wary of him. I’m going to try to stop taking my medicine. I suggest you do the same. I need to remember. I need to remember Sammy.”

“But the voices,” you tried arguing, stopping as Dean’s arms tightened around you.

“The voices are a clue! Don’t shut them out! Welcome them. Learn from them,” Dean insisted, just a familiar voice that sent shivers of fear down your back echoed through the library.

“Dean, I’ve got to go. If he sees us…,”

“Go,” Dean whispered, surprising you when he pressed a kiss to your head. “Be safe. And don’t forget.”

I’m 14 the first time it happens.

We stay up late much later than we should, and i grow jealous of the two girls’ proximity. They play a game pretending to be each other‘s wives, rubbing each other gently, and spooning in a way that rendered me jealous and frustrated.

I’m the one who suggests we switch rooms. We do, the three of us piling into the queen bed of the spare room.

I think J might have gone to the washroom. I know she thinks it was S’s idea. It wasn’t. I was the one who was jealous, who wanted to be touched. And so i invented the stupid game. Touch the other person until they say chicken. I mean I guess I made the rule that clothes had to stay on. And they did, when S went. J and I just ran our hands up and down her body, but we were too shy to do anything else. She didn’t chicken. Then J went. S didn’t have the same holdbacks we did. She went down on J, while I made out with her. J didn’t chicken either. We just continued on until it was my turn.

I lay down on my back in the middle of the bed. I’m wearing my blue ranch t-shirt and my floral white pj shorts. J sits between me and the wall, and S is below me. I don’t go back into that room for many months. The first time sleep in there again, at a different sleepover with different friends almost a year later, I have to sleep upside down. Otherwise I felt like it was happening again. After that, the room stopped giving me panic attacks. I didn’t have to speed by it without looking at the door. I was even able to have consensual sex inside.

It’s better now, but some days are harder than others. Sometimes I can still feel her on top of me holding my legs down. Sometimes I still go limp and forget I can say no. That’s when i rely on others to stop me. And time and time again they do. They stop me, and they remind me that my consent matters, and that my body is mine and no one else’s.

My mum has started asking about my whereabouts and i don’t wanna go home. I can’t go home. Instead I played with his hair, asked to braid it. I knew he was a creep, and I knew he liked me. I think we ended up cuddling. And then that lead to kissing. I remember catching glimpses of his face and thinking how just not good looking he was. We were making out but my only thoughts were his receding hairline and how to keep myself away from my parents. I suggest a sleepover, pretending it had just occurred to me and that i had not been hoping for an escape all along. I made it very clear we would not be having sex. He asked me if he should stop for condoms and lube. We almost go to his house but end up at an upset r’s instead. Thank the gods. I talked her down from her ledge, explaining that I was not indeed stealing her boyfriend from her, after which Marm got jealous or smt and i went and basically gave them couples therapy. It was weird. That night is a blur. At one point the two of them stepped out and i called Cian in tears. I told him that I didn’t want to be making out with them but that i was doing it anyways. I kept having to stop because i would start hyperventilating so I would just have my panic attack on the other bed while the two of them made out. Chapter 3: Back-To-Back Battles

Chapter 3 is one of my favorites. I know I say everything is my favorite in this game, but this one’s special. I’ve been thinking about chapter 3 since I came up with the run idea! If you’ve never played, you may ask yourself, why this one?

Chapter 3 takes place in the aptly named Glitzville, a floating city in the sky. The whole area you explore in the chapter is tiny relative to the other chapters. But the setting takes a backseat to the real reason this chapter is exciting. Glitzville is home to the Glitz Pit, a professional fighting ring. The champion’s belt has the crystal star you need to complete the chapter. As your partners will say, there’s only one way to get it. Fight to the top. 

Around 20 opponents, ranging from 5 goombas to a Koopatrol, to not one, but two special minibosses. Each battle starts with a condition, for example, “Don’t use any items!” If you fail the condition but win the fight, you refight the opponents you just did. This is why I’m excited. The chapter is built around battling, which I have made much more difficult. That also means this could be the longest post yet, as I’d like to talk briefly about each battle, given there’s a set number.  I will, at most, say one thing about each battle. Luckily, something I haven’t mentioned is that the Glitz pit doesn’t count dying as a Game Over. I’ll still add it to the counter, though. Now, we have a tough decision to make...

Partner Get!

This is our next partner. He has no name, although Mario Wiki refers to him as “Mini-Yoshi”. The thing about him is, you, the player, name him. I had not thought about this yet. I got the Green Yoshi (there are about 8 variants?). I’m going with “Hornet” because he hits fast and repeatedly for small amounts of damage and is small himself. It occurs to me I think there’s a superhero named the Green Hornet? This isn’t a reference to that, I promise. 

Hornet can use “Gulp” to hit the iron clefts against each other, winning the fight. Let’s do this.

But first... I’m gonna upgrade him at Merlon’s. I have the Shines since i didn’t use them on Flurrie and it seems like a good idea.

Iron Clefts (2):

“Win in 5 turns or less”; Gulp costs 4 FP bringing the total FP I have down to 2. I can’t heal per my rules, so I have to wait for a level up.

After this fight, a piece of cake appears. It heals you, but you can opt out. There’s another after the Bros fight that’s from the champion and is poisoned, so normally you’d eat the first but not the second. I just didn’t eat either per the rules.

I didn’t document Magikoopas, Dark Craw, Bros, Chomps, or Koopatrol well. Chomps and Magikoopas I know I fought twice, Magikoopas because of an actual loss, Chomps because of a bad condition (think it was take damage). For Koopatrol, I used Shell Shield with Koops and that worked very well. That takes us to...

Mini-Boss: Rawk Hawk

“Use at least one special attack”. With 40 HP, this guy is a tank! … is what I would say if we didn’t get Hornet this chapter! Ground-Pound does numbers with Mega Rush P. Normally, it deals 5 separate instances of 1 damage, but with Mega Rush P, it deals damage counting down. So right now, for me, it deals 6, then 5, then 4, then 3, then 2. Which just so happens to equal 20, HALF of Rawk Hawk’s health. The condition doesn’t really matter for this fight but I did it anyway. Piece of poisoned cake!

Almost immediately after, we sneak in on the owner of the ring who admits to himself to using the Crystal Star to keep himself young forever. It’s a no holds barred, “If you hit 0 HP it’s a game over for real” fight against...

Macho Grubba!

This boss’s whole gimmick is stat changes. He will first up his chances to attack, taking two actions per turn! After this, he’ll up his attack or defense and attack in the same turn. So! The plan is simple: Defeat him in 2 turns. With Yoshi out, he does 40 HP for us, so we need to find a way to do 20 HP with Mario. Luckily, Power Bounce acts about the same as Yoshi’s Ground Pound. With a little strategy, we win the fight, EZ PZ.

And that’s Chapter 3! I didn’t talk as much about the story in this post, because I really wanted to focus on the battles. Feel free to tell me how wrong I am for doing so.

Waterpark

To celebrate the beginning of summer break, Kenny, Lee, Katjaa, Duck, and Clementine all head to the waterpark for a day of fun! Another adoable request from @mettatonlover858 i love these requests so much omg thank youuuu!!!

Lee was quick to regret his decision of sitting in the back with the kids so Katjaa didnt have to. Duck and Clementine were relentless in trying to bother each other, and Lee was in the middle of it. To keep the kids entertained for the ride Katjaa had brought some coloring books and markers for them, which was immediately proven to be a bad idea. Duck accidentally ended up coloring off of his book and onto his swim trunks, and not wanting to be the only one with an orange marker, he reached over Lees lap to color on some of Clementines dress. In retaliation, Clementine tried to jump and attack the older boy. Small hands reaching for the boy's throat before Lees able to catch her.

Lee always found it amusing how Clementine was an angel and sweet to everyone she meets, but when shes around Duck, she turns into a monster. Guess the older boy just knows how to push her buttons. The entire car ride Lee is keeping the kids from attacking each other, much to their disappointment.

"Lee, are you sure you don't want to sit in the front on the way back? I'm sure I can handle the kids just fine," Katjaa offers for the thousandth time.

"Trust me, I'm fine. Really, its a piece of cake," Lee smiles at the woman as Ducks hand fly's past to grab and tug at one of the buns on top of Clementine's head. The girl screams and also reaches past lee to try and grab a handful of Ducks buzzed hair before Lee is separating the two once again.

After what felt like hours, they arrive at the popular water park. Duck and Lee get out one door, before Lee's head to Clementine's side to help try and fix her hair best he could. It's not like he did a good job at styling her hair in the first place though, since what was supposed to be two buns on top of her head turned out to just be two pigtails on top of her head with stray curls flying in every direction. But either way, Lee thought the girl looked adorable.

"Clementine darling, come here so I can put some sunscreen on you," Katjaa calls from behind the truck. Once Lee does what he could for her hair, he sends her over.

"We're raising a couple of monsters, Lee," Kenny laughs as he gets out of the front seat, securing his cap on his head as he shuts the door. Walking over to his friend as Lee rolls his eyes.

"Maybe. The thing is, Clementine only acts this way around Duck," Lee shakes his head, crossing his arms.

"It's cause she wants to prove to him that he ain't any stronger than him just cause he's older," Kenny explains with a shrug, watching as Clementine sticks her tongue out at the older boy while Katjaa rubs sunscreen into her cheeks.

"Okay, now you Ducky," Katjaa says, turning to her son who quickly begins to protest.

"Mooooom, 'm not gonna burn. I dont need any sunscreen!" The boy whines, even going so far to stomp his foot in a mini tantrum, hands balled into fists at his sides. Katjaa starts to insist that he does before Kenny stops her.

"Naw Kat. If the boy says he ain't gonna burn, then he ain't gonna burn." Kenny smirks, nodding towards his son who grins triumphantly up at his mother.

"Fine...fine. Let's just get in the water. It's hot out here." Katjaa says, pulling the bag of towels onto her shoulder before heading towards the entrance to the water park. Duck immeditiatly begins to run off across the parking lot, much to the horror of his parents, and wanting to catch up, Clem begins to run too before Lee coughs, catching the girls attention.

"Sorry Lee," The girl mumbles, waiting for Lee to catch up to her. He takes her hand before they continue towards the entrance, where Duck was already waiting.

"Kenneth Junior! Never do that again!" Katjaa scolds once shes close enough to the boy, very gently slapping her sons shoulder. Duck whines and rubs his shoulder while Katjaa continues to scold him. Slowly but surely, the two families find themselves finding a spot on the sand the waterpark has played out.

Lee helps Clmeneint out of her coverup dress, making sure to place it somewhere safe, so it's not all sandy when Clem puts it on again.

"Oh, Clementine! That is a very pretty swimsuit," Katjaa compliments and Clementine looks down at her own swimsuit. It was a sort of two piece where the top was long, reaching just above Clementine belly button, and the bottoms were a sort of skirt/short combination. Clementine thought it was pretty too.

"Thank you!" The girl happily smiles at the mother before Duck is racing past her and into the wave pool. "Duck! Wait up!" Clementine whines before chasing after her friend.

"When I saw it, I knew I had to buy it," Lee smirked, standing up straight again. The swimsuit was white, and had little cut oranges spread all over it. Katjaa rolls her eyes at that and laughs softly.

"Well, you have very good taste then." She compliments, but Lee shakes his head.

"Carley actually picked it out first. She couldn't stop laughing when she showed it to us. Clem wasnt too amused by the joke, but she thought it was pretty cute nonthe less"Lee shrugs, smiling at the memory from a few days ago.

"Its a shame she couldn't make it, I would have loved to catch up with her some." Katjaa sighs as she sits on a beach hair.

"Carleys pretty upset about it as well, but she said she promises to make it up to us, whatever that means." Lee chuckles before Clementine and Duck are calling for him and Kenny, yelling at them to come play. The two fathers share an already tired look before heading towards the wave pool where the two kids were trying to drown each other.

Once the adults were close enough, Duck popped out from under the water where Clementine was holding him, spitting some water out of his mouth before speaking.

"Dad! Can we play chicken? Pleeeaasseee?" The boy begs, grabbing and tugging on his fathers hands, as if bothering him would get him to agree. Kenny looks around, trying to see if he can find any rules against the game before shrugging.

"Sure, why not. Lee? What do you say?" Kenny asks, turning to look at his friend.

"CHicken? Whats that?" Lee asks, standing at the edge of the wave pool, the water just barley covering his feet.

"Its a game where we put our kids on our shoulders, and basically they just try to knock eachother off. Duck thinks its the best game." Kenny rolls his eyes, and Lee just laughs a little.

"Alright fine. Sounds fun." He nods, and looks at Clementine, "What about you sweet pea?" He asks. Clementine seems to hesitate for a few moments before slowly nodding. "Okay then, its settled!" Lee smiles as Duck cheers. The four wade deeper into the water, stopping when the water reaches just above Lees hips. Kenny and Lee then both lift the children onto their shoulders before Kenny starts to go over the rules.

"Okay, so me and Lee cant interfere, thats rule number one. Rule number two is no punching, biting, or slapping, but pushing. And rule number three is try not to kick me or Lee in the face for the love of god." Kenny finishes and Duck starts to wiggle up on his fathers shoulders, eager to get the game started with. "Okay jesus Duck, calm down. We can start in three..." Kenny starts to countdown.

At one, Lee and Kenny both step close to eachother as the children try to push eachother away. Lee struggles to keep his balance as Duck shoves Clem backwards, but hes able to keep the two up and above water. Eventually, Clem gives one good push that sends the father and son underwater.

"You cheated!" Duck sputters once he resurfaces.

"Prove it," Clementine calls, still sitting up on Lees shoulders.

"Let's go again." Duck demands, not wanting to lose to a girl, especially not Clementine.

"Fine! I'll just win again." Clementine grins, and Duck gets back on Kennys shoulders. And just like Clem predicted, she wins again. Before Duck can remand a rematch, Lee is taking Clem off his shoulders.

"Okay, I think we're done. You came too close to kicking me in the nose Duck." Lee says, making Duck pout. "Why dont we go to the slides?" Lee offers, and suddenly the kids aren't so disappointed in the ending of their game. "Ken, why don't you go keep Katjaa some company while I take the kids to the slides?" Lee offers, and Kenny nods, patting Lees back.

"Good luck Lee. Try not to lose them." Kenny jokes before going to sit with his wife. Lee quickly ussures the kids to the slides. Once at the top, Duck was the first to go down all by himself, but Clementine is a little more hesitant.

"Can't you go down with me?" She asks, turning to frown up at the adult.

"Sorry Clem, but the rules say one at a time," Lee explains before Clementine is turning toward the lifeguard on duty.

"Please! Just this once can he come down with me! I'm not brave enough to go down on my own yet." The girl pleads, even pulling her puppy eyes at the redheaded woman. The woman seems to hesitate, glancing at the little girl and the rule sign before sighing.

"You know what, I won't tell nobody if you dont," The woman bends down to the girls height, giving her a smile, which Clementine returns.

"Thank you..." Clementine pauses to read the womans nametag, "Bonnie!" After thanking the woman, Clementine pulls lee to the slide. She sits in his lap, and they wait until Bonnie gives them a thumbs up before they slide down.

Clementine screams out of joy the entire way down, and even Lee lets out a chuckle as they slow down at the end. Once its over, Clementine gets up and holds out her hands to help Lee up as well.

"Took you guys long enough!" Duck calls before sprinting off toward another water ride.

"Duck!! Wait!" Clementine calls, running after him quickly, "Lee, cmon!" Clementine yells at the adult, making him laugh and calmly walk after the two children.

The families spend another couple of hours in the sun and water, occasionally switching the kids off so the one who had been watching them could rest for a bit. Eventually, the kids stopped running around, and were much too tired to do anything else. So they decide to head home. Lee helps Clem back into her coverup, and Katjaa forces Duck to put back on his T-shirt, which he complains immensely about, especially now that his shoulders and face are red and hot with sunburns.

Katjaa carries her son back to the car, while Lee and Clementine walk hand in hand. Lee gets in the middle of the backseat while Katjaa sets Duck down next to him. He helps Clem in and helps her buckle up before leaning back in the seat. Kenny gets in the drivers seat, and Katjaa into the passenger side, before they're driving home. It doesn't take long for the two kids to pass out, using both of Lee's shoulders as pillows. Soon enough, Lee feels himself nodding off from the long and exciting day.

Lee gently rests his head on top of Clementines, letting his eyes slowly shut, planning to just take a quick break, but quickly ends up falling asleep as well.

When Katjaa notices the three sleeping beauties in the backseat, she immediately takes out her camera to snap a picture while laughing softly.

"Carley is going to love this." The woman smiles as she turns back in her seat, looking over the amazing picture with a smile.
