Like... the guy was constantly nervous, arguably cowardly, timid, and jumpy.. but at the same time charming, generous, dignified,... you list the virtues. This is a very cool combo of traits!!

Also he was HOT AF but never took advantage of it. so points for that. (Although in the Nicholson/Turberville book it mentions in his younger years he had "moral delinquencies". but i dont know what its referring to i may have to do digging.) There is something seriously wrong with his relationship with Nottingham. He got sick cuz of personal jealously of Nottingham. Had useless shouting matches with Mr. Finch in the House. He wanted to resign cuz of Nottingham so bad Burnet had to prevent him from seeing William cuz he feared Shrewsbury would GO TOO FAR with William. That man was FUMING. he married such an interesting wifey!! she was known as an eccentric, an outcast in English society. Except Anne and George I LOVED HER. Like she was crazy in the eyes of the people but crazy and genuine is good when you're surrounded by liars and power-hungry ones. The Green family dynamics are so interesting because like, Viserys is the father but due to his decay he seems more like the grandfather, whereas Otto is the Grandsire but seems to fill out the role of a father more, not only to his daughter but also her children, so he and his daughter are a mother/father unit but in some situations Alicent is treated like a sibling to her children (by Otto) and then you have the obvious Helaena/Aegon happening (siblings who are also husband/wife and mother/father to their children), but at the same time it seems like Aemond is the one trying to be the family's protector and attempting to step up as patriarch, with some of the scenes between him and Alicent giving off the vibes of equals rather than Mother and Son (like when they discuss Aemond finding Aegon) and his relationship with Aegon seeming like he's the big brother and not the other way around, in this essay I will-

Lucid Dreamer (2/2)

part 1

Gepard stalls almost a week before he finally goes out to the safehouse, and it takes him a couple days to find it because Sampo didn't have the time left to be wasn't super specific about the location. But he does find it.

It's pretty bare bones, really. Gepard knows that was probably to be expected, but… It feels crushing, when he realizes there are so few personal things here. It's nothing specific to Sampo. Just some food, some medical supplies. A cot and a heater and a lot of mismatched blankets. Nothing to remember someone by.

But he does find the letters, in a metal box stashed away under the bed.

There are two for him. Three for Natasha, and two for Seele. One for Hook, one for Serval, one for Pela, one for Bronya.

Bronya's is mostly business. They knew each other from the whole Stellaron incident, but not much beyond that, and the incoming catastrophe is a more pressing matter. Seele's is actually two copies of the same letter, and Gepard realizes why when Seele is so angry she rips the first one up without reading it. He gives her the copy a couple days later, and she slinks off without a word.

Pela seems completely normal after hers is delivered, but Gepard knows better than to trust that. The next day, he finds her asleep in bed with Serval, bottles abandoned on the floor, both their eye makeup smeared and running and Pela's glasses horribly smudged and crooked on her face. Serval doesn't read hers in front of him, but she's clingy with Gepard, Pela, and Lynx for quite a while after. She throws herself into her work a lot. She insists the heater from the safehouse is busted and she needs to keep it. It's too dangerous for use by someone who's not an engineer. Might burn their house down or something. Gepard doesn't argue.

Hook's letter is short, with easy to read words. The rest of it is actually a treasure map, and she and the moles spend the next several days running through the Underground, finding hidden candy and toys. Hook asks them when Sampo is coming back, because one of the marbles she found from his map looks green, just like his eyes, and she wants to give it to him. Natasha shoos Gepard out of the clinic before he can even begin to think of an answer.

Natasha refuses to let him see what's in her letters, which ok, fine, he'll respect that. He hears from Bronya who heard from Seele who heard from Natasha herself though that one of the letters was a map and the other a catalogue, with all of Sampo's hidden "warehouses." Gepard promptly marches himself back out to the frontlines, where he can turn a blind eye. If a ton of stolen goods suddenly enters the black market, and if the orphanage and the clinic suddenly have new supplies, well, technically that's none of his business.

Gepard goes to bed, curls up under mismatched blankets and closes his eyes.

He doesn't dream.

One of Gepard's letters was also business, like Bronya's and Natasha's. He and Bronya follow everything meticulously, down to the letter, because there has to be some good to get out of all this, there has to be. Gepard can't let it all be for nothing, it would bury him.

And so the catastrophe passes. Not without casualties, and not without a lot of damage and destruction. But Belobog survives.

And after that, time just kind of…goes on. Gepard has been a part of the Silvermanes since he was old enough to enlist. The Fragmentum had gotten so much worse in the years before Welt sealed the Stellaron. He knows the statistics, it is literally his and Pela's jobs to keep track. He knows when he sees a face everyday in the camps and then it's suddenly gone. He's not unfamiliar with things like grief and loss.

He still catches himself checking the trashcans and the supply crates and soldiers' footprints sometimes, though.

But there comes a night where Gepard goes to bed, holding the mismatched blankets to his face, and he dreams. And it's strange, it's off, it sticks with him. Sampo doesn't look the same. He's thinner. His muscles have atrophied. He looks like how Gepard has seen soldiers after months in the hospital.

The most unsettling difference is there's a scar across the left side of his head, Gepard can see it over his ear, peeking out past his hairline, carving towards his cheek. Sampo is always careful about his face. Gepard once saw him dodge a Fragmentum monster and literally let it cut across his neck just to keep his face clear. He wouldn't let that happen for nothing.

Their actions in the dream itself aren't new. Sampo seems tired, run down and worn out, but he announces his presence with aplomb by lobbing a bunch of smoke bombs off the rooftops and sending his soldiers scrambling. Same shit, different day.

The new part is what he says when Gepard chases him out to the edges of the camp, tackles him into the snow. Gepard pins him to the frozen ground to detain him and Sampo doesn't even fight it, just looks up at him like he's seeing sunrise for the first time in months.

"I'll be home in one week."

Post 2.1 Ratiorine Thought(s)

Under the read more because of 2.1 spoilers

Nothing really advanced or complicated to say; I did a lot of laughing and panicking and "Awww"ing during their moments in the story. (Tiny Aventurine, you will always be a legend.)

But the one thing I really, really hope fandom will latch on to is something that might represent a slight shift in Aventurine's characterization in fics... I was toying with this thought even before 2.1, but the patch definitely solidified it.

Rather than the one to jump straight into the (at least physical aspects of the) relationship, I definitely think Aventurine is much more likely to be the kind of person to hold himself entirely aloof from anyone he develops any genuine interest in--because literally every single person he has ever truly cared about has violently died, in acts of horrific misfortune which are directly tied in Aventurine's mind with his own "luck."

I think that the moment he recognizes himself having even the slightest bit of genuine feeling for Ratio (or any character people might ship him with, really), he would fold his cards like wet tissue and run for the hills.

Nothing good has ever come from him caring for someone, and every golden glimmer of his otherworldly fortune has been bought at his loved ones' blood price.

Aventurine doesn't take deals that aren't beneficial for him.

And there's no way he can survive another loss.

The more he actually cares about someone, the further and further a relationship gets from ever being in the cards.

Listen to me, hey, HEY what if, what if Danny had circulation issues? Like his hands, nose, and ears just stay cold all of the time and he has some problems that stem from that? I like to believe that while yeah the cold wouldn't bother him as a ghost it DOES bother him (at least somewhat) as a human. This could very well lead into Sam and tucker getting him gloves/mittens/earmuffs as gifts and holding his hands to keep them warm, giving him little kisses on the tips of his ears or his nose to give them just a tad bit of heat even if only for a moment. :(

As soon as Lily sat down on the new sofa (a burgundy she was sure clashed with her skin tone and her hair colour but James had loved it so much she hadn’t been able to refuse him) she felt the exhaustion of the day come crashing down on her. She had never been happier to be a witch, because moving all that furniture, old and new, into the lovely little cottage would have been way worse without magic. Instead they had been able to do all that just with their friends and all their wands focused on the effort.

“All settled in, like a lovely little housewife,” Mary had commented before quickly moving out of the way to dodge Lily’s punch.

“I don’t know, it’s all very straight to me,” Marlene had added, dodging Lily’s second punch.

“You’re my best friends, you’re supposed to get me!” she had rolled her eyes.

“I get you!” Remus had called from the stairs, which had prompted both girls to hug her tightly, loudly proclaiming they got her more than any man ever could.

Now that it was evening the house was ready to be lived in. Mary and Marlene had left, the former off to her date, the latter back to her own flat in London where Dorcas had just come back from a visit to her family. Peter too had left, muttering something about his mother not feeling well. It wasn’t the first time she heard him voice his concern for his mother’s health, and she made a mental note to ask him more and check if she could help with something. As for Remus and Sirius they were still there, on the armchair opposite the sofa, both curled up around each other and sound asleep. She smiled at the sight, but ended up yawning right at the moment James walked into the living room, levitating a cup of hot honey and ginger tea towards her.

“Are you alright?” he asked, looking her up and down. “I told you you should have let us do the heavy load of the work, there was no need for you to exert yourself.”

“I’m pregnant James, not ill,” she shook her head, taking the cup from mid-air. “Thank you.”

“You’re right, I’m sorry,” James sat by her side, sighing contentedly. “Our own house. Our own place, with our own garden where our son or daughter will learn to walk… What could be better?”

“I can think of something,” Lily took a sip of her tea.

“What? Do you want me to change the living room furniture? Or maybe we could reshuffle the rooms upstairs if you’re not convinced?”

Lily shook her head, interlacing her fingers with her husband’s.

“The house and the garden are perfect, my love,” she said. “The only thing that would make this better, is if these two sleepyheads in front of us decided to buy the cottage next door. We could take out the dividing fence and have an enormous garden for our baby too.”

“That would be so nice,” James smiled, then he scrunched his nose. “Although I’m not sure this place would be the best place for them.”

“It’s Godric’s Hollow, James,” Lily chuckled. “Nothing bad is ever going to happen here.”
