Monica McKee

Biography

Monica McKee was born in Utopia Colony, Mars, the only child of Mark and Joanna McKee – a native-born Martian, which remains a rarity in the mid 22nd Century, and with the exception of trips to Earth to visit relatives and the four years of her university education, she has lived on Mars her entire life. Because there were few other children her age in the colony, she learned very early how to relate to others regardless of age or background, intuiting that similarities were more important than differences. Living in the colony put her in frequent contact with boomers and transport runners, and she found their stories of alien encounters a source of deep fascination.

She was present in Utopia Colony during the Terra Prime incident, an experience that galvanized her sense that humans could not afford xenophobia in the face of the larger galaxy. She watched the live coverage of Jonathan Archer’s speech to the Coalition of Planets conference and found it deeply moving (the next year the Utopia Colony high school would be renamed after him). Her pro-Coalition stance led to an argument with an uncle the next Thanksgiving that ended with her kicking him out of his own house, an outcome that amused her parents, but did not surprise them.

Following the outbreak of the Romulan War, many civilians on Mars relocated to Earth, either temporarily or permanently. Mark and Joanna were among the exodus, but Monica, now in her early twenties, chose to remain on Mars. She couldn’t see that Earth would be any safer in the grand scheme of an interplanetary war (pointing out that it was Earth that got attacked by the Xindi and not Mars tended to not go over well and she stopped after the first few times). She also felt that leaving would be an abandonment – Mars was home, and she couldn’t bring herself to leave. But the war turned Utopia Colony into something of a ghost town, and Monica found herself taking a job at one of the few businesses that hadn’t closed – a burger restaurant owned and operated by Mohammed Abdel, who was also unwilling to give up on Mars.

Monica found a home at Fat Mo’s, enjoying both the camaraderie and the work itself. In the years following the end of the war, the business flourished, particularly after Starfleet officially moved its shipbuilding facilities from Earth to an orbit above Utopia Colony. And in January of 2164, a homesick Starfleet captain, newly assigned to the Utopia Planitia Yards, stopped by the restaurant and sat at one of her tables. Her growing friendship with Captain Charles Tucker III would lead to her becoming acquainted with numerous Starfleet personnel, including a certain Andorian engineer…

Personality

Monica is, first and foremost, a people person. She is attentive, a good listener, and enjoys connecting with others, even if only in passing. Her cheerfulness and resiliency are the product of a childhood spent learning to be comfortable with her own company. Living in a place where others are frequently just passing through has instilled in her a deep curiosity about the lives of others. She is kind, accommodating, and generous, but also possesses a fierce sense of fairness, and has no time or patience for people who can't be decent to others. She is highly intelligent and not easily cowed or daunted, though she tends not to think of herself in those terms.

She is a talented sketch artist, but she would demure and call herself a dedicated amateur. She loves to dance, particularly early 20th century swing dancing, and is a regular at the dances held at the Grace Note club.

Relationships

Monica enjoys getting to know her customers, and especially her regulars, but few have had the impact on her life of Trip Tucker. During his time on Mars, their friendship quickly grew, her initial crush on him being immediately tempered by her recognition of his deep love for his wife and children. The more time he spent at Fat Mo's, both as a customer and as unofficial handyman, the more familial their relationship became, and Monica views him as the older brother she never had.

He also has a special place in her heart as the person who first introduced her to Commander Karveth, with whom she is very romantically involved. And if anyone has a problem with that, she really doesn’t care. An opinion like that doesn’t deserve her attention.

My take on Martian Manhunter pt. 3

But J'onn finally heads back to Mars, homesick after years on earth. He can't wait to get back to M'yri'ah and the kids. And to introduce them to Zook, his new interdimensional sidekick. He was in really good spirits as he flew back to earth, anticipating nothing but happy things. But what he finds there on Mars is enough to haunt him for the rest of his years.

In his absence, Mars has been completely razed to the ground. The Saturnians came back, slighted by J'onn repelling their invasion of the solar system. As punishment, they used the martian's genetic weakness to fire, and burned everything and everyone to the ground. The martians fought valiantly, and managed to kill most of the Saturnian forces. But the end result was the same: a bloodbath. J'onn's wife and two kids were murdered in cold blood, and he could have saved them. If he wasn't on earth, he could've saved them…and that's what finally breaks him.

Almost everyone died in that war, beyond one Martian and one Saturnian. J'onn's brother Ma'alefa'ak managed to survive, mostly because ma'alefa'ak was such a hermit that the saturnians didn't even know where he was. He survived because his people shunned him. And one Saturnian survived the wars: K'os'che'i, the deathless one. He couped the rightful ruler of Saturn by declaring him too weak to get revenge on Mars, and he then led the charge to massacre every martian in existence.

These two brothers were then left on an abandoned planet to grieve. Seeing red at the death of his wife and two children, J'onn loses it and goes on a revenge quest with Ma'alefa'ak' and Zook. The quest takes them to the farthest ends of the galaxy hunting for K'os'che'i and the secrets to his immortality. It even leads them to discovering the true heir to Saturn, Prince Jemm. Jemm was the adopted child of the Emperor of Saturn. But when K'os'che'i led his coup, Jemm's adopted mother spirited him away to a distant star system to be raised to fight and reclaim his throne.

Now, Jemm joins our trio in hunting down K'os'che'i, and we eventually have a dramatic confrontation scene at the edge of all the known galaxies. Martian Manhunter, Ma'alefa'ak, Zook and Jemm have already destroyed the artifact keeping K'os'che'i alive. And with sorrow and righteous anger welling up within, J'onn and Jemm kill K'os'che'i and burn his ashes to dust.

Now depressed and miserable, J'onn, Ma'alefa'ak, Zook and Jemm go their separate ways once again. J'onn and Ma'alefa'ak are going to go back to Mars, try to process their loss and grief. Meanwhile, Jemm decides he's going to explore the galaxies, try and see if he can't rebuild the legacy of the good Saturnians elsewhere in space. Zook decides to accompany Jemm, knowing it's probably best he give J'onn time to himself, after this tragedy.

From here, J'onn and Ma'alefa'ak end up spending time on Mars again for a whole period of years. They just end up exploring space together, always returning to their little makeshift village on mars just for the two of them. It's a very peaceful and tranquil life. The most peace J'onn's known in a long, long time, honestly. But like all things in J'onn's life, this peace doesn't last.

If I can be honest with you guys, after rewatching the episode They Put A Moonlander On The Earth!, I feel like the whole episode was just way too mean spirited to the Moonlanders. Now don’t get me wrong it had some really good moments and lots of amazing facial expressions utilized in animation. But I feel like people only remember this episode and only liked it because that one scene and that one scene only. But in my honest opinion I feel like the whole episode just undermined the entire Moonlander race, not to mention undermining Penumbra and Gibbous as characters. Cause from what I’ve seen since this episode aired, all anyone remembers it for is that Penumbra “comes out” at the very end and nothing more.

One of my main problems is the fact that the whole episode invalidates Penumbra being homesick. It’s clear she wants to go back but most of the time the characters treat her homesickness as just “Oh she’s a grump that doesn’t know how to have any fun.” But then just runs with it by making it seem as though that really was the case and not “She misses home, maybe we can make her stay feel like home until the rocket is ready.” Like seriously what if she had actual family she was trying to get back to?? Also what kind of message are they trying to send out ending the episode with her saying that she’s only staying because her “friends and family” can’t take care of themselves!? That just rubbed me the wrong way especially as it was just used a ship teasing.

Another one that stuck out like a sore thumb, was the whole “all of the Moonlanders stayed on Earth” thing! Pardon my language but I call bullshit! I 100% doubt that the entire race stayed on Earth and dismantled all their rockets over 90s fashion, snap bracelets, and yo-yos! The episode makes it seem as though they completely abandoned their planet (yes I am referring to the Moon as a planet for the sake of this point) and culture. Basically oh I don’t know what’s that term I’m looking for, oh yeah: Cultural Genocide! It makes absolutely no sense and is very insulting to the Moonlanders. It makes sense to incorporate said Earth things into their culture and fashion or even make their own variation of these things on the Moon. Also why not make it seem as though only a small handful stayed behind to establish like their own enclave/ district to share Moon culture with the Earthers that are genuinely curious and the rest went home to help rebuild and establish like some trade connection between Earth and Moon? One thing I will say is that it makes sense for Palus to stay, as what if she took up rank as the Moon’s new general and is in a way trying to establish peace between both planets.

Also how was Glomgold being a racist jackass to the Moonlanders funny!? Again it rubs me the wrong way that Glomgold constantly tries to enforce Gibbous to identify as a Martian. It’s not funny and just feels uncomfortable. Like how would you feel if you were constantly forced to identify as anything but your actual race, gender, or sexuality? You wouldn’t like it and it’s definitely not something to joke about. It’s flat out microagression. Also why is Gibbous being portrayed as blindly following orders in this episode? I feel like this stomped down any development as a character, as he should have learned something from the invasion about blindly following orders. But no the whole episode makes him seem like he’s so naïve and learned nothing to the point that blindly follows Glomgold like a puppy believing everything he says like it’s the word of god.

I needed to finally air that out cause man that had bothered me since the episode aired. I know people are gonna say that the show was canceled and therefore couldn’t fully wrap things up, but that doesn’t excuse the problems with season 3.

i would probably rewrite the fic if i went back to it - not in the name of big changes but just because it’s difficult for me to get back in the headspace i was in with a lot of my older works. it wasn’t a good time irl and my writing style is a reflection of my current circumstance, whatever that might be. it could be something only I’m aware of but yeah, I’m really aware of it when I look at my old stuff.

so while i would love to revisit some of my older works, i have no time frame i can offer with original projects taking the forefront at this time - plus some pretty demanding health issues.

but i am grateful and elated you want to know more with the story. I haven’t posted anything in years and that’s created a lot of worry on my end, so i really needed to hear people are still interested. there’s a good few stories i’d like to redo! i promise I’ll post here should I have any updates on revisiting older works.

thank u thank u i never want to shut up abt them actually but i'm gonna have to pick the highlights or i'll be here all night

they are best friends. i said this in their intro post but i'll say it again. best! friends!

it's hilarious that ann and ravi dislike each other so much because they are the same person in different fonts. pradeep befriended both of them for the same reason and they would both have an aneurysm if he told them that.

the reason being that he saw two people who would fully rather die than admit to having An Emotion, lonely and homesick and missing the people they love, and dealing with it by isolating themselves and being insufferable, and decided someone had to do something about it.

pradeep is the youngest of three ( an older brother and sister ) and ann is the oldest of five ( four sisters ).

pradeep loves his siblings very much, but he'd be lying if he said part of the appeal of the job wasn't getting out from under their shadow a little. he may not be the first one to get a phd ( his brother, archaeology of the lunar colonies ) or to leave their home planet ( his sister, political correspondent for an up-and-coming martian news site ), but he's damn well gonna be the first one to travel beyond the known galaxies and document the microbiology of previously-unexplored planets. not that he's competing.

ann and her sisters were brought up by their grandparents. by the time she leaves, her grandfather's been dead for a few years and her grandma is already very old; it's a very real concern for ann whether her grandma will still be alive when she gets back, especially since nobody can contact her during the mission.

ann's little slice of life vlogs for her sisters? pradeep is usually the cameraman.

never mind your watch, you can set the ship's entire calendar by pradeep mishra. he knows the major holidays people are likely to celebrate and makes sure they're always observed — decorations, food, music, whatever it calls for — but he also finds out the little things that are important to people, too. lesser-known holidays, cultural traditions, variations that spread among human planetary colonies. he believes everyone should have some connection to home if they want it.

pradeep vc: i would follow ravi into hell i just wish he'd stop going there

ann's role as a paramedic means she gets to go planetside a lot in case anything goes wrong on expeditions, and it's unequivocally her favourite part of the job. sometimes someone will get hurt, but often it's just research teams collecting data and she gets to chill. take photos of the places they explore. record some more vidoes to take home. sit there and experience the wonder of being on a planet so far from home they don't even know its name. she fucking loves it.

i repeat: they're best friends and they love each other SO much.

team karaoke nights? the two of them always duet.

look, was ann wrong to be concerned about pradeep falling for ravi? not really, she loves her friend and doesn't want to see him get hurt by someone who's seemingly made it their mission to ruin any ounce of good will extended to them. but pradeep is very capable of taking care of himself, more than people would assume from how chill and nice he is usually. he will not take anyone's shit, he won't let himself be treated like shit, and he's not afraid to be vocal about it.

even though pradeep and ravi were kind of, sort of, together, if things in general hadn't gone so horrifically wrong, i think pradeep would have broken things off. not in a forever way, but in a find me when you're really ready for this because i deserve better rn way.

ann farthing vs the utter inability to truly leave someone alone when they're struggling because she's a GOOD PERSON and she was RAISED BETTER THAN THAT but jesus christ some people test her patience and she can hold a grudge like nobody's business so yes she once spent twenty minutes muttering angrily to herself in the kitchen at 2 am ship time as she made a grilled cheese ( it didn't take that long but she needed the extra time to finish her angry little soliloquy ) so she could bring it to ravi because nobody should be crying alone in a deserted common area in the middle of the night. but she's gotta keep some sense of normalcy so she also flipped him the bird on her way out.

insatiable gossips. both of them.

when everyone is dead, and ravi finally brings himself to move the bodies so they're not just sitting where they died, he puts the two of them next to each other.

MARS! We love to see it.

I’m probably going to have to do a re-watch because there was a lot of new Martian lore introduced.

I am... sort of curious how this is going to tie-in to the overall story, just because Mars hasn’t been a big focus in the last couple seasons and we’re clearly spending a lot of time there now.

Surprised the Martian satellite that got blown-up on Earth back in s2 wasn’t mentioned, unless I just missed it.

I am very happy for Conner/M’gann but very nervous something will go wrong, especially with Conner getting injured in ep 2.

M’gann also had some very strong moments in both eps, I particularly liked her confrontation with her brother in ep. 2.

Gar seems angrier this season. Wonder what’s going on there, because it’s clearly more than being homesick.

Hey, the Legion of Super-Heroes! I admittedly don’t know much about them, but I’m excited to learn more.

THE NEW INTRO! I’m glad we’re getting an s1-style intro again instead of just title-cards like s2 and 3.

I also adore the end credits scene, especially the episode 1 one with Halo. Great development to her character and callback to s1.

My new take on Martian Manhunter pt. 2

While J'onn was handling all of his solo adventures, such as dealing with the Idol Head of Diabolu and with infiltrating Vulture, he was also an active member of the Justice League of America. He had pretty good relationships with almost every member of the team, although there were some people he was closer to than others. Him and Superman got along really well, for example. Being two aliens, they could relate to feeling sometimes out of place on earth. J'onn more than Clark (since J'onn actually has a living family on Mars), but still.

Whereas him and Wonder Woman had a more contentious relationship, initially (he was a patron of Mars, while Ares/Mars was one of Wonder Woman's biggest enemies). The Roman in J'onn vs the Greek in Diana made for some very icy relations, initially. Eventually they learned to work past it. But there's still a sort of lighthearted rivalry that exists between them, even now.

Another member of the team J'onn became really close to: Green Arrow. After their first few missions together, they became inseparable. Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and Speedy were like an inseparable trio. Like Batman and Superman, except with more of a mutual trust. J'onn became just as much a father to Roy as Oliver. J'onn even began to see Roy like one of his own kids back home on mars. And Zook was like the weird family pet, even accompanying Roy on a solo mission or two.

In short, J'onn was the heart of the team. He was the one responsible for it's founding, he was the one who was always on call, he was just the one really holding the team together. So when he left to go back to Mars, it really devastated the team dynamics. They managed to survive, but as i'll show later: things really went to hell without J'onn around.

But J'onn finally heads back to Mars, homesick after years on earth. He can't wait to get back to M'yri'ah and the kids. And to introduce them to Zook, his new interdimensional sidekick. He was in really good spirits as he flew back to earth, anticipating nothing but happy things. But what he finds there on Mars is enough to haunt him for the rest of his years.

I've already read more books this year than i did in 2020, or as i like to call it, the year where i barely read books or slept. so that's good.

If I can be honest with you guys, after rewatching the episode They Put A Moonlander On The Earth!, I feel like the whole episode was just way too mean spirited to the Moonlanders. Now don’t get me wrong it had some really good moments and lots of amazing facial expressions utilized in animation. But I feel like people only remember this episode and only liked it because that one scene and that one scene only. But in my honest opinion I feel like the whole episode just undermined the entire Moonlander race, not to mention undermining Penumbra and Gibbous as characters. Cause from what I’ve seen since this episode aired, all anyone remembers it for is that Penumbra “comes out” at the very end and nothing more.

One of my main problems is the fact that the whole episode invalidates Penumbra being homesick. It’s clear she wants to go back but most of the time the characters treat her homesickness as just “Oh she’s a grump that doesn’t know how to have any fun.” But then just runs with it by making it seem as though that really was the case and not “She misses home, maybe we can make her stay feel like home until the rocket is ready.” Like seriously what if she had actual family she was trying to get back to?? Also what kind of message are they trying to send out ending the episode with her saying that she’s only staying because her “friends and family” can’t take care of themselves!? That just rubbed me the wrong way especially as it was just used a ship teasing.

Another one that stuck out like a sore thumb, was the whole “all of the Moonlanders stayed on Earth” thing! Pardon my language but I call bullshit! I 100% doubt that the entire race stayed on Earth and dismantled all their rockets over 90s fashion, snap bracelets, and yo-yos! The episode makes it seem as though they completely abandoned their planet (yes I am referring to the Moon as a planet for the sake of this point) and culture. Basically oh I don’t know what’s that term I’m looking for, oh yeah: Cultural Genocide! It makes absolutely no sense and is very insulting to the Moonlanders. It makes sense to incorporate said Earth things into their culture and fashion or even make their own variation of these things on the Moon. Also why not make it seem as though only a small handful stayed behind to establish like their own enclave/ district to share Moon culture with the Earthers that are genuinely curious and the rest went home to help rebuild and establish like some trade connection between Earth and Moon? One thing I will say is that it makes sense for Palus to stay, as what if she took up rank as the Moon’s new general and is in a way trying to establish peace between both planets.

Also how was Glomgold being a racist jackass to the Moonlanders funny!? Again it rubs me the wrong way that Glomgold constantly tries to enforce Gibbous to identify as a Martian. It’s not funny and just feels uncomfortable. Like how would you feel if you were constantly forced to identify as anything but your actual race, gender, or sexuality? You wouldn’t like it and it’s definitely not something to joke about. It’s flat out microagression. Also why is Gibbous being portrayed as blindly following orders in this episode? I feel like this stomped down any development as a character, as he should have learned something from the invasion about blindly following orders. But no the whole episode makes him seem like he’s so naïve and learned nothing to the point that blindly follows Glomgold like a puppy believing everything he says like it’s the word of god.

I needed to finally air that out cause man that had bothered me since the episode aired. I know people are gonna say that the show was canceled and therefore couldn’t fully wrap things up, but that doesn’t excuse the problems with season 3.
