my dad used to play a lot of minecraft. he played on the same world for maybe like 10 years.
i have vague memories of his various bases - a massive cave, some weird cobblestone hell - but he eventually settled on a glass platform surrounded by farms (i think he had one of those really old wither based tree farms) suspended above an absolutely fucking massive pit down to bedrock. like this pit was collosally fucking huge. and every day he would just. widen the pit. id come home from school and go to his office to tell him about my day and he'd just be digging that pit with an inventory of diamond pickaxes. no beacons because he hated fighting the wither.
only once did i ask him why. and he just shrugged. and kept digging that pit.
this was all on 1.8 as well. 1.9 came out, he tried it. died to a skeleton and immediately went back to 1.8. he wrote a script to back up his saves, and when i asked him for it he used this as an opportunity to teach me how to write batch files.
anyway. couple years ago i bought him factorio. possibly one of the best gifts ive ever bought. shits like crack cocaine to him. now i look into his office and he's optimizing production lines. had to buy him the dlc. he reached the edge of the solar system today. 1 monitor dedicated to this game at all times. constantly running even when hes away. sometimes i leave little concrete wall smiley faces. he finds them instantly because the factory is an extension of his soul. never removes them just builds around.
anyway i think this explains why im like this.

On a semi related note the more I am subjected to Microsoft products the more I become convinced that the reason so many people these days believe themselves to be “bad with computers” is that the programs they are forced to use in their professional life are utterly incomprehensible to ANY rational human being and they are (rightfully enough) extrapolating out that this is just how computers are. They aren't!!! In their quest to remove all the “scary” details from their poor fragile end users Microsoft have created an ecosystem that behaves completely erratically and unpredictably and is by definition unknowable. Things just happen. Then they stop happening. Nothing ever announces why or how. Just a thousand vague and useless popups that may or may not be there tomorrow. I PROMISE computers are actually extremely simple and logical beasts.
#brain.txt#the biggest barrier to widespread linux adoption is the fear of learning something new and i get it i really do#when youre at zero knowledge and dont even know where to begin its completely overwhelming and so much easier to stick with what you know#but the problem is no one ever really knows windows#youre sharing your room with a wild animal#you believe you know its mannerisms well enough to know when it is hungry and what it likes and dislikes but one day it might lash out#and there will be no way of ever knowing why#with open source software the only barrier to knowledge is how far you want your own curiosity to carry you at present#and yeah! ill readily admit!! theres plenty of components of my system i dont know too much about right now#but i feel inherently less lost and helpless knowing that the information is out there and i am actually capable of reading it#instead of someone actively obfuscating all possible attempts at understanding and also constantly changing everything from under me#(i have never owned a mac in my life so idk whats going on over there but my general impression seems to be that mac at least gets the whole#walled garden thing right in the sense that it is a cohesive and functional experience despite being extremely locked in. which i have more#respect for as a solution i am not interested in but i can see the appeal of rather than the FUCKING DISASTER microsoft has unleashed)

when selecting a new laptop, I wanted to play Sonic Colors Ultimate. I didn't have enough storage on my old computer, but I've had it for too long to refund it, so I at least want to play it once. I looked for this laptop with the minimum specs required for Sonic Colors Ultimate in mind.
fucking hell.
#I'm not installing another operating system. it's not happening. linux mint is the only one I'm going to run on this computer.#but that only leaves me with two options: either repurpose my old computer specifically for sonic colors ultimate#or learn how to run a virtual machine#I'm not even sure which one is more practical. I just know that I'm very frustrated right now.

ive been dual booting linux and windows on my laptop for a while now and i love using linux but theres a bunch of stuff on windows i still need and use. my laptop is kind of old at this point but linux works Beautifully while windows has been getting slower and slower and more frustrating to use. well last night windows would not even let me log in or boot in safe mode or do Anything and ive spent all day trying to figure out wtf is going on with it and its still giving me issues after doing a fresh install so like. microsoft die i guess

ooh it occurs to me i can ask the gay people in my phone about this one: anyone have any recommendations for types of linux? im building my first pc and im going to make the switch while im at it. im thinking just mint (ciiiinnamon? probably? honestly i don't like the MATE ui as much so if i do mint it's either cinnamon or xfce) but i feel like people have strong opinions on the subject
#it'll be used mostly for gaming but also just basic web browsing etc. whatever#and id say im. average but rusty with linux. my first laptop was a chromebook i dual booted into xfce#and i used kali quite a bit in college but not as my primary OS#so i can definitely handle a bit of complexity but i probably won't want something with a steep learning curve#and i really like messing around with UI settings to make things Just How I Like Them! if any are especially good for that#hayden shhh

So uh. I have a Raspberry Pi 5 running MX Linux now.
I barely even knew what Linux was before I got the Pi. I haven't touched my Windows machine for the past couple days. I've just been browsing the web and installing crap on my Pi.
And now it's ready to be my primary coding and writing machine. Which means I'm going to be using it even more.
Does this mean I'm officially a nerd now? As if I wasn't already.
#hobbies#new hobbies#alasse rambles#raspberry pi#linux#mx linux#I'm really really excited about this#there's just this feeling of satisfaction when you set something up yourself#basking in the coolness of what I invested time into setting up#I feel accomplished#it feels great#I'm looking forward to learning how to code on this thing#and being able to carry around my entire hecking computer IN MY POCKET

Any photography nerds that use Linux aware of a program i can use for editing similar to photoscape x. Got real comfy with it for both editing raws and general post processing for renders and drawings and got very sad when it was the one thing I couldnt seem to find a replacement for/way to get working on pop os.
#if not then ill just learn how to use darktable ig idk#other then this though my time with linux has been great. highly recommend people look into a distro and switch if you also hate windows#photography#photo editing#photoscape#linux

#it's funny bc at least on mint cinnamon there's uh. some extra steps needed to get the thing off the ground#that are... not explained in the big instructional gdoc (or in the github documentation for that matter)#perhaps because they're like... standard features of How To Python Linux that someone Doing That is assumed to already know? idk#and well. I cannot express how much I am not that user#BUT WE LEARN AS WE GO VIA PROFUSE GOOGLING AND TRIAL & ERROR!#.....this script's probably going to be running all night isn't it >_>#content is for other people

i love tech. i love this era of information. i googled a bazillion different sources when i made my Windows/Linux dual boot last year because i've always been paranoid to change OS. Everyone said it worked fine. I open Windows for a couple hours today and it updates the BIOS against my will and breaks the dual boot. I look it up and now all of a sudden I find ten billion tech bros saying that yeah, actually, this happens all the time, and you should have installed the EFI (no explanation given, you know what an EFI is, of course you do) in different drives, and it could have been much worse because Windows could have just corrupted the ubuntu boot somehow yeah it does that of course, and you should have also turned off secure boot, that's something you knew how to do and had to do it, obviously, how do you not know all this.
#AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA#nine years in computer science and nerd hobbies and i have yet to learn something about linux that doesn't come from a rude asshole#it is that hard to hold back the jabs and actually help a person once in your life. grow the fuck up holy shit#also truly fascinating how no matter how much you hate a company it is never enough. what do you mean windows can just do this#MULTIPLE TIMES AN YEAR EVEN#god go to hell. i'm not even sure i fixed it because it gave an error message at the boot just now#but at least i'm in and can backup my stuff#good thing i always keep backups frequently but holy fuck. that's for emergencies not random sabotage#i open windows less than once per month!!! i just wanted to play one lil fangame for a couple hours!!! microsoft fucking explode!!!
