Book time! I want to post all my new stuff but don't want to flood people with them, so I waited a bit after my last one to put this one up, but I can't wait any longer to show it off. This is The Rose and the Serpent, a Good Omens Beauty and the Beast AU by Atalan. I know there's some kind of fairy tale fic event going on in the fandom right now but this one is from a few years back, so if that's your thing and you're impatient go check this one out.

I'm totally in love with how this one came out. It's like, if you had a cartoon character who's reading a plot-relevant book of fairy tales, this is the book you'd draw for them. Belle has this book. It's perfect for its niche. The front cover is burgundy cardstock with brown faux leather on the spine, and antique-brass-finish photo corners to protect the edges. The rose was done with gold embossing powder and a stamp, since I can't draw and those lines are too fine for the cricut. The batch of books I'm working through now is my first time experimenting with legal quarto size (legal size paper (8.5x14 in.) folded twice) and everyone who raved about it is right. It's very satisfying to hold and was a joy to make.

Close up of the photo corners and a view of the spine. I've never used photo corners before, partly because I don't ever see them on commercial books, but they just felt right for this project so I felt it was time to experiment. I didn't glue them down, just clamped them closed with jewelry pliers, and I was worried they wouldn't stay in place but they seem to be fine. Cardstock isn't a very hard-wearing material, and if it has a white core it tends to show at the corners of the book where it rubs against things, even under light handling. Hopefully the metal corners will protect it.

The spine title came out well. I was worried about matching the color with the embossing powder color on the front, but they came out fine and I'm very pleased.

Top view, with handmade red-and-green endbands and a green ribbon bookmark. Both of these were chosen to match the absolutely gorgeous endpapers with this mosaic flower pattern. They're chiyogami from ChibiJay and they're stunning; the photos don't do them justice. I bought them because they remind me of the stained glass windows in the Disney Beauty and the Beast. CJ has this great deal where you can make custom paper packs in pre-cut sizes for a discounted price, and they've got hundreds of patterns. This isn't sponsored, by the way, I just think they're awesome.

The one on the title page and for the chapter numbers is called Christmas Card, and the drop capital is called Floral Capitals, both free to use for personal projects. I've only done drop caps on a couple of projects, because for purely personal aesthetic reasons I don't like when they sink into the paragraph, but if I can mimic them by just making the first letter huge? Love that. Defintely going to keep doing that. Can never get the kerning to look right when I do it the regular way, but with this it isn't an issue.

The graphics on the title page are re-used from an older project, but they were so perfect for this one that I just went with it.

As I said above, this is my first legal quarto but it for sure won't be my last! There are three more in this batch, and they're so pleasant to hold that I'll for sure be making more before too long.

So when, at the club Christmas party, they end up under the mistletoe (I'm sure Robbo decorated every single doorway with it) and he's like "let's give them a show" and kisses her in a way that steals her breath away

This year, things are being done a little differently at the club. Usually, menial tasks were delegated to anyone and everyone in order to get them accomplished and it doesn’t usually matter who does them, as long as they do. The design of the room and organising it was left to someone that the club paid and it was usually done to the incredibly high standard that you would expect. This year, the players have been tasked with something each. 

Kos has the honour of placement cards. She watched him agonising over designs at home - wanting to make sure that the people he knew well enough had something that was tailored to them. He’d purchased a Cricut and made them this way, setting them all out across their dining room table to see how they looked laid out. He’d tweaked them, bought fancy pens and added small flourishes. 

It wasn’t something that took over, but he certainly took pride in the ones he made and it showed as he gently laid them out on the carefully decorated tables. The room looks amazing, Virgil and Alisson had done an incredible job, though she does suspect their wives may have had a hand in helping. The colour scheme was spot on and certainly provided the perfect photo opportunity that the club would no doubt be taking. 

Out of everything available, she expected Andy to be in charge of Secret Santa, or something fun. Upon finding out that he was in charge of flowers and in turn, mistletoe, she had mixed expectations of how it would end up. And yet, the bouquets that adorn the room and complete the tables are stunning. He walks around now, the usual “Robbo” grin upon his face as he interacts with everyone while wearing his flower crown of holly, berries, mistletoe and a few colour scheme flowers in there too. When he turns around, exposing his back to her, she notices a little sprig of mistletoe tucked in his back pocket for unsuspecting victims. 

“He’s going to get us, you know.” She comments, holding her wine glass closer to her chest as she huddles close to Kostas who has approached her far too quickly for her liking. He scrambled through the crowd of people who had been filing in now for the past half an hour and the once empty room they’d entered is now bustling with people and music is now being played through the speakers. 

“He doesn’t know. He won’t.” But deep down, Kostas knows that Andy knows. He’s seen the looks being thrown his way and he knows it’s a matter of time before they’re outed. It may not be tonight, but this was the start of it. Robbo would watch their reactions and slowly start to make little comments when they’re back in training. And Kostas knows he’ll struggle to hold it all together but Andy thrives on reactions and he’ll keep at it like a dog on a bone. 

“You know what he’s like.”

“I do, and he won’t.”

He wants nothing more than to pull her closer to him by the small of her back, his hand snaking to her waist and press his lips to any part of her that she’ll let him - whether that be her hairline, her temple, the space between her eyebrow and eye, her cheek, nose or of course, her lips. 

He tried to get as many kisses as he possibly could before they headed out in separate cars, not wanting to arouse any suspicion because despite the few blissful months of dating, it’s come at the cost of it being in secret. Kostas is certain that no-one at the club would have an issue with their relationship but he didn’t want it out there just yet and initially, she’d wholeheartedly agreed. She’d seen too many relationships collapse once it became public and yet, it was becoming harder to keep it a secret. Not because others were catching on but because neither of them wanted to stay away from one another any more. 

“Well, looky what we have here.” Andy’s voice sounds behind them and they both groan in unison. “My favourite “non couple but are so a couple” couple.” he grins as Kostas shoots him a look. “Oh come on. If you keep giving me that look I’ll be forced to bring out the gentleman doth protests too much, methinks line.”

“So leave and we won’t have to give you that look,” she comments, giving Andy a little nudge with her elbow and a crooked smile. 

“Oh it’s we now is it? You said that so naturally.” her smile falters and she realises too much has been said. She knows Robbo knows and the look that she spots on Kostas’ face confirms this. 

“Fuck it,” her beautiful Greek boyfriend hisses, downing the rest of his drink before he moves quickly, swiping the mistletoe from behind Andy’s back and holds it above her head. “One of the team’s biggest gobshites isn’t going to stop so what do you say? Kiss me?” 

“Where did you learn the word gobshite?” Robbo asks but his words are drowning out as she steps forward, toe to toe with her secret boyfriend. Her hands move to his waist and to his nape. When her head turns this way, his turns that way and they give a nervous chuckle to one another as they begin to lean in, noses rubbing together before their lips finally meet.

Artemis Fowl Escape Room

Note: this was originally posted to Kotaku, but a number of my old articles there were destroyed after they purged whole sections of the site.

I’ve been very good friends with one of my former classmates for almost 20 years. He’s a massive Artemis Fowl fan (as am I, though I didn’t grow up with it like he did) so, when I found a signed copy of the book for his Christmas gift, I knew I couldn’t just give it to him. He’d have to be Artemis... and steal it.

NOTE: I paid for it. Please don’t steal books, and support your favorite artists. :D

Not just steal it, steal it from his own past self. Artemis Fowl follows the Doctor Who school of wibbly wobbly timey wimey... stuff.

BUDGET AND MATERIALS

First and foremost, I had just over a week to figure out

a) my budget and

b) how the puzzles would flow from one to another

Budget wise, I wanted to spend less than $50, which meant I needed to get creative with props. I own a Cricut, so I could make some very professional looking custom textiles, stickers and cards/paper items, and had a massive amount of sticker vinyl already on hand. I work for an electronics company, and do hobbyist Arduino, so I also already have lots of wire, batteries, some modules, and a few completed robots I could cannibalize. Lastly, I also have a large stock of cosplay items (wigs, costumes, fabric, foam) lying around. I know most people wouldn’t have this on hand, but if you’re planning on making an escape room, look at what YOU already have. Maybe you have power tools, or maybe you’re good at designing quick websites. You probably also have more than eight days to come up with an entire escape room game too, but the idea came to me AFTER I found his gift.

Lower Elements Police shirts for my friend’s wife, my friend, and myself of Wing Commander Vinyáya, Extremely Irritating Human Fowl, and Captain Short. Materials cost for all three was between $15 and $25- I have leftover heat vinyl i can use on another project, and a cool new shirt for myself to boot.

As far as things that lock, all I have is a locking mailbox, and a small key locker (like the kind used by some AirBnB to store a key outside a house). None of the doors within my house lock. So, I knew I’d definitely use the mailbox and key locker SOMEHOW, but I also needed something big and safe enough to hold the book.

Like... a safe. I bought an extremely cheap one on Amazon for $12.

I also spent another $8 on some concentric stacking boxes to start the hunt.

From there, my puzzle flow began writing itself. “Artemis” would need to do two things-

Find the location of the safe.

Discover the safe combo.

I’m already building a full jumpsuit out of scuba neoprene and copious amounts of cursing, but for now, this’ll do. Also, yes, I’m aware I wrote it in English and not Gnomish. Sue me.

Since things tend to go in threes, I split the puzzles into three quest lines, and started filling in the blanks with puzzles.

Lastly, to sweeten the deal, I decided to raid my cosplay drawers (and my heat transfer materials) to make an EXTREMELY low budget Holly Short cosplay (homemade shirt for me, plus my Kino goggles, Elena Fisher thigh pouch, my exercise armband, 13th doctor boots, Dipper/Hiccup wig, and some cheap elf ears), plus shirts for my friend and his wife, above.

The last thing I did was convince another very close friend (and actor) to call in as tactical support (aka the escape room hint helpline) as the Artemis Fowl books’ equivalent of Q, a very condescending centaur named Foaly. I sent him the full set of puzzles I’d written with solutions (and changed his name in my caller ID), so he could berate “Artemis” and offer hints or solutions should my friend get stuck.

START OF THE HUNT: Open concentric boxes, and get scolded by Artemis Fowl

I set up three boxes, each smaller than the other, with 3 codes (Gnomish, Centurian, and the Eternity Code) on the inside lid of of each box, nested in each other and wrapped.

The smallest box contains only an invitation to begin the game.

It has come to my attention that there may be an issue. If you’ve gotten this, that means you’ve lost your memory- and, by extension, MY memory.

For safekeeping of my own mind, I’ve taken great pains to hide pieces of my own memories with friends and various acquaintances. Do yourself a favor and find the original document the People wrote on me those years ago. You’ll know it when you see it.

· Foaly and you will be indispensable. Please help where you can.

· If a door is closed or locked, unless a clue I’ve left behind specifically says to open it, it can stay closed. The same can be said for drawers and closets. You know me. I don’t like getting my hands dirty more than necessary.

· On that note, if a clue requires any sort of brute force, it’s wrong. I can’t assume Butler will be there to assist. You have my express permission to smack me upside the head of this and remind me I’m a planner; physical activity is hardly my strength.

· I may have seeded the internet (very well, I HAVE seeded it) with my own history lest I forget something like Butler’s first name or other personal information. Remind me to look up things online should I need to be reminded of family history.

· Everything needed to get my memory back is located on-site, but it may not all be indoors.

The Mysterious Fourth Player

There’s a Jackbox pin attached to the note, signaling to play the Jackbox game All About You.

The three of us log in, and it won’t be streamed on twitch. But a fourth player joins, named MONOKUMA (it’s my friend who is playing Foaly, as I discreetly gave him the room code). He answers as normal (or like Monokuma might), but when it comes to the one-truth-one-lie section he lists the following:

Truth: An alien left you a snack in the fridge.

Lie: Artemis will never regain his memory.

This will lead “Artemis” to search the refrigerator, where a Tardis confection will be waiting.

The Doctor’s Orders

Breaking open the candy TARDIS will have a hastily scrawled note by the Doctor.

I’ve done lots of travel in my day… lots. Grab my screwdriver off the bookshelf (the OLDER one), and go find my old friend Ford’s journal. I know it’s still there. And check out the inside of the back. It’s exposure to the Chameleon Circuit should translate language, but it won’t crack codes in your own. One’s translated then, and the other… well you wrote that code, so good luck.

Using the 10th doctor’s sonic screwdriver on the last page of Gravity Falls’ Journal 3 (two references my friend IMMEDIATELY groked) will reveal a black light message:

The Eternity Code

The Eternity Code (written by Artemis in the third novel) is blocks of lines to make letters. If its too hard to read with the sonic/invisible ink, “Artemis” can peel off the tape and find a printout underneath, which may be a little easier to navigate.

Root’s Obituary

IN MEMORY.

Today, thousands gathered to witness Commander Root’s recycling ceremony. The man, a maverick who knew exactly how to take risks, was well known for clanking through Police Plaza hallways, barking orders, louder than a crack of dynamite. From a humble beginning in Haven’s western suburbia all the way to L. E. P. chief commander, the man never did anything halfway, and has been put to rest, having taken in an incredibly lengthy list of most wanted criminals.

The THIRD of THREE clues to the safe and lock starts with searching RATCHET’S bag. A note from him is contained within, with the following text:

Not much I can do from another galaxy, but Clank hacked your computer and left you a fairy hologram, you’ll need some infrared goggles to read it. There’s also some weird folder on your desktop, might be worth a look.

This will lead “Artemis” to check the computer.

Hacking Back

Two users on the computer, myself and... Artemis. There’s some notes taped to the monitor that might help.

“Give it up, Foaly. I know you know my password.” and “you can always click the hint, but it’s the family motto...”

The hint lists “Gold is Power”, and the password is Aurum Est Postas, the Fowl family motto and Artemis’s own computer password (until he later changes it to Centaur in Book 6).

There’s only two things of note when logging in as Artemis, and they lead into finding the final combo lock clue and safe location clue.

For Emergency Use Only

Not-so hidden among the wafers, wire, magnifying lenses, and sensors is a pair of ‘infrared’ goggles (Also other than the ‘infrared’ goggles, the rest of the items are all real tech, plus my magnification ring, as I’m legally blind and loathe to carry a larger magnifying glass)

Wearing the goggles, ‘Artemis’ will now be able to read the image, which is in Centurian.

Opening the folder is five photographs of people in nón lá (leaf hat), otherwise known as Vietnamese conical straw hats.

I did a semester abroad in Sapa, Vietnam, so not only did I take the photos, I also just so happen to have my own nón lá hanging up in my bedroom (I lost my baseball cap the first week I moved there, and my host mother insisted I get one to protect myself from the sun).

Clue one tells you its on the bottom rack.

Clue two tells you a bunch of board games.

And clue three says its on the left (sinister) when looking at where humans get food, or on the right on where fairies get food.

Its inside that rightmost cube on the bottom, since we are facing the backyard from this view, with the kitchen behind.

THE LARGEST SAFE NUMBER IS EVEN

THE SAFE COMBINATION HAS NO DUPLICATE NUMBERS

THE NUMBERS ADD TO TEN AND ARE ORDERED FROM SMALLEST TO LARGEST.

From here, we know the third digit must be even, as it’s the largest number. The dials only go from 0-9, so the third digit must be 2,4,6, or 8. The numbers must add to ten, with no duplicates, so the third number cannot be 8. It also can’t be 2 (1,1,2 is invalid).

So the third number must be 4 or 6.

But even the next largest numbers (2 and 3) only add to 9 with 4. (2, 3,4) so 4 cannot be the final digit.

The last digit must be 6.

If 6 is the last digit, the other two numbers must add to 4 to make 10. There are only two valid combinations to make this possible (without violating the no duplicate rule)

Neither “Foaly” nor I will help him; he’s welcome to hem and haw at his old clues all he wishes. It’s entirely up to his gut on this one. There is no wrong answer.

Sorry for not giving project updates in awhile, life has been a bit unhinged.

Here's some stuff I made:

I crocheted a progress flag from embroidery floss and markered/painted a drawing figure for a Pride event at work.

I'm not crazy about how it turned out. I was making up the flag as I went, and the markers smeared when I tried to seal them with modge podge. I would do this whole project differently if I did it again.

I also crocheted some pot holders for the break room. I was tired of burning my hands on dishes from the microwave.

Blue and yellow are the company colors, so this yarn was perfect. First attempt at pot holders, and embroidering writing onto crochet. I'm satisfied with it as a first attempt.

I also lost my tcg deck box pattern (that I had created and wrote down), so I tried to recreate it from memory. I themed it for my June Spider Tribal Magic: the Gathering deck.

It needs to be a little taller so that I can fit a hard collector's sleeve in there for the feature card, but not a bad prototype. I forgot to take a picture of the inside. There's a slot for the Commander window that can also hold tokens or a small sideboard. I'm currently working on a slightly taller prototype for my spouse's Jeskai Storm deck, so keep an eye out for that.

Finally, I have also designed a sliding pencil box design. This one is for my sister for Christmas. It's so she has a case for her Cricut picks and such.

I had to resize the top a bit to get a good fit, but I am very happy with how this came out. Another self made pattern for the books!

I have many other projects upcoming, including the Minecraft Nesting Dolls (the OVERWORLD theme won the poll), but my life is experiencing a bit of upheaval currently, so I'm not sure when my next update will be.

I’ve always side-eyed the whole “send christmas cards out to a list of relatives and/or former colleagues that you otherwise do not interact with” deal on account of - and I am sure there are exceptions out there but as a broad generalization - it’s one of those social duties that I am societally expected to perform and my brother is not on account of basically a random roll of the sex and gender dice. 

Not to say cis men don’t have societal expectations re: holiday chores, but those are basically “buy tree from tree salesman and carry inside,” “put christmas lights on house” and possibly “put turkey/ham in oven and then make a wholeass spectacle of carving it several hours later.” Five hours of effort, max, and dudes have done their dude duty on Christmas (again, again, speaking in broad generalities, not all men etc). I’m aware that parts of those dude duties are annoying, but I’ve done the lights and the tree and the turkey myself plenty of times, and I’ll HAPPILY take all of those over “bake the holiday cookies and clean the baking mess and clean the whole house and don’t forget the needles that fell off the tree on its way in and decorate the interiors and make sure we all get a family photo and remind [male family member] to buy gifts for [his immediate family] and wrap the gifts and make more cookies and make all the side dishes and stand back while [male family member] makes a big fucking deal about the turkey while you have made 13 unacknowledged side dishes, all of which must accommodate everyone’s dietary and allergy concerns oh and also please write a card to everyone you know, preferably by hand.” 

The holiday expectations gradually accumulate the older you get, but even though I am now officially agéd, I have spent the last thirty-two years resisting the increasing social pressure to do weirdly gendered holiday chores, so it probably seems weird that this would be the year I break with tradition. 

but, you know, it’s been a long time since I’ve gotten to see a huge number of my friends in far off places for that one obvious reason, so this year I was like eh fine I’ll engage in the tedious duty of maintaining social bonds, I’m just not gonna spend money on it. I’m wicked late sending mine out, but it’s actually been kinda fun and cathartic to design and make them.

I only made two mistakes, which were: 1) mentioning to my mom that I was finally following in her footsteps and stepping up to the card-exchanging plate, and 2) letting it slip that I was making them myself.

see, when I mentioned the cards to her, I really should have seen this coming but... she really wants me to send her one so that she can prominently display it for all her friends in my parents’ super uptight 55+ Floridian retirement community to see. You know, so she can show off how talented I am. So crafty!

TGIFF! I’m telling you… this week seems to have lasted forever and a day. Not sure why because we were quite busy with all the typical activities, homework, friends, classes and all that family jazz. It just seemed that on Monday, Friday seemed sooooo far away! Now it’s here and I’m doing a little happy dance!

Let’s start off with something that isn’t quite happy mail that I received, but happy mail that I’m sending out today. Yesterday I spent the day visiting with my neighbor from across the street at my childhood home. It was so nice to spend time with her and her husband since I haven’t seen much of them. They were my eyes and ears on my folks while they were alive and I couldn’t get over there right away. Such nice people and so sweet. I really enjoyed myself, catching up, rehashing old days and having a lot of laughs. So great to see them, tour their beautiful home and also be able to see my childhood home and how much has been done to update it and see it loved and lived in again.

I made a little thank you card for my neighbor yesterday that I’ll be mailing off to her today. Have I mentioned how much I love this Cricut thing my hubs got me for Christmas? I seriously use it all the time! It’s far easier than I ever thought it would be and it’s definitely worth getting now that I have it. I fought it for years saying I didn’t see how I could use it and now that I have it… I use it constantly!!

Collaged Fish Swap

Over the last couple of weeks we’ve been working on some collaged fish for a swap within our FB art group. What a fun project! Even my daughter got into making some! We dove into my art paper scrap box and got working! Overall, we probably made about 20 of them!

Yesterday, I received my first one from my friend Terry in the mail. Look how awesome it came out!

ATC (Artist Trading Card) Grumbacher Swap

Every few months I participate in a swap with the Grumbacher art group on FB. A theme is chosen and each artist creates an interpretation of the theme to send out to the Chartpak group and then they in turn send out the cards to each of us for a fun swap. This particular swaps theme was “metal” so the artist that I received an ATC from created this beauty:

Every few months our FB art group also works on another swap that has a theme of some sort of -ism. Maximalism. Pointilism. Minimalism. You get the idea. This past week, I received this “Maximalism” card from Neha. Isn’t it great!? So much color and floral fabulousness!

Masterboard postcards are a lot of fun to create and I love it when we do one of these swaps. This particular masterboard theme was to use all black and white to create 4” x 6” postcards. This past week I received two different interpretations from my friends Pam and Terry. Love these!

I got her a Cricut. Emma is very crafty and with the kids getting older and of school age, she likes to personalize all their stuff so its easier to organize. It seems like yesterday was Christmas but just as Walmart always predicts, Valentine's Day is just around the corner.

Although I am a High School teacher, I love to celebrate holidays with my students, reminding myself that they are still kids and like to have a good time.

Yes, it helps that I teach Family and Consumer Science and my students get to host a party for the elementary students during this holiday.

So here's a list of ideas that will help me put the spirit of the love holiday into my students so they can do the same for the little ones:

Valentine's Day Party Ideas: Invitations

This is my first year teaching at this school, and I know that they host a Valentine's Day Tea Party for preschool students and their parents. So here are some invitations I like for the event.

1. Doily Wrapped

I am in love with this invitation because it can be a simple invitation on the inside with the doily wrapped on the outside and tied with a strip. Simple but classy.

2. Heart Shaped Half-Opened

My first thought was “Yeah, right, I'm not doing this with my kids” because it looks difficult. Then I remembered, this is their deal, and I want them to have control. If one of my classes decides to do this, I will happily oblige by getting what they need and showing them the YouTube tutorial.

3. Bring Me the Macarons

I love this idea. I have several students who ask to make these because I don't struggle with them the way most people do. This would be a fun treat for students and parents as well! The invitations could be bought or cut out with a Cricut or silhouette.

4. Tea Pot Invitations

How cute is this idea for a tea party? We could use paper that is Valentine's Day style and again, a Silhouette or Cricut to cut them out. If that won't work, I am sure the how-to over at Do It Yourself Invitations will give full instructions!

5. Stamp It

These invitations, which initially came from Freshly Squeezed Card's Etsy site, is adorable. However, I would do something similar by purchasing these blank style invitations and adding either sticky back vinyl that had been cut out to the shapes they used, stickers or even stamps and let my students color in the extra.

6. We're All a Little Mad Around Here

I like the idea of doing a mad hatter tea party, and this invitation would entirely fit the bill. The quoting is cute, and I like the fancy design around the side. If this is something that interests you, the Alice In Wonderland site has a lot of great ideas!

7. Polka Dots and Hearts

Country Living also liked the idea of a Mad Hatter Party and came up with this idea as well. I love the polka dot and see through paper. So super cute and they even give you the template over at their site!

If you are mailing your invitations out, consider making them postcards. The cost is only thirty-four cents for postcards while regular stamps cost forty-nine cents. Every penny helps, especially if you have several invitations.

Valentine's Day Party Ideas: Decor

Now we are up to one of my favorite parts. I love decorating. Typically my daughters and I take a night, and I make something yummy that relates to this holiday, and we get to work, making my classroom look cute. I am going to skip out on door decor but will add some lovely things that will go perfectly for our Valentine's Day Soiree.

11. Ball Jars with Flowers

The teacher before me was very into canning. I have two twelve packs of mason jars and a double cabinet full of them. Therefore, I think it would be perfectly acceptable to paint them and add real flowers to our tables.

12. Valentine's Day Banner

This banner has an attraction over many of the others because it lays flat on the wall. You could do this almost anywhere and get kids to help shouldn't be hard at all. The use of different paper adds to the definition of the design as well.

14. Fancy up the Mailboxes

The mailboxes can be bought super cheap this time of year (even more so when they go on sale after Valentine's Day). Adding a letter that was hand cut by you with sticky back on it and the candle lamp bottom makes it even cuter. Nothing a little hot glue and imagination can't fix!

15. Photo Booth

Creating an area where people can take pictures is as simple as doing a backdrop of some sort and adding some fun props and/or a picture frame. This idea was created over at Pallet Creatives.

Naturally, if you're having a Valentine's Day party, you need some tasty treats.

21. Cupid Float

These drinks are super cute and remind me of Italian sodas. Ashley from Frugal Coupon Living uses Strawberry soda, whipping cream, ice cream, and cherries. If you drink or someone you know drinks Starbucks Frappuccino coffee out of the jar have them keep it to use it for the drink bottles.

I do not like store bought desserts anymore. Call me a snob but they just don't taste right.

Weekend Wrap Up: Cooking, Baking, Valentines and the Old Goat

First off, let me just tell you how much I adore my dogs. If you know me, you know how obsessed I am with my little 4 legged babies. They are just everything to all of us in our family. We’ve got 4 dogs: 3 pugs and one English Bulldog ranging in ages from 13 down to 1.

Our oldest pug died nearly 2 years ago and to put it mildly, her special needs had special needs. But we got lucky with her because the doctors told us she wouldn’t survive past her first year and she made it just shy of 13 years old. She was the best, and we all agree everyday that we all still really miss her.

Next up in line at our house is Frances, age 13. She’s deaf (although we first thought it was a reflection of her indignant attitude but now we know better), and has some pretty bad knees these days. Because of this, she’s on medication daily so she needs to have her liver profile done every 6 months to make sure it is functioning alright. Frances might be old, and wobbly, and filled with bad attitude toward her one year old pug sister, but she’s the sweetest little old girl. She spent the weekend either tucked up in her bed in our art room or perched underneath the breakfast room table where I’m never far out of her sight. I think as she’s gotten older and harder of hearing, she prefers to be able to see me (or my husband) to know that we’re close by. Just a guess, but every time I glance, she’s right next to me.

Next up on the list of things that got done this weekend was my 8 year old’s school project that focused on ancestry. He gets a kick out of hearing stories about my Russian grandfather and all the hilarious antics and stories from long ago that my dad used to tell us. We had to report on when he arrived in the U.S., what he did for work, etc. and thankfully, my dad told me all this stuff many times so I was able to help my little guy out with the information he needed.

He also needed to supply a picture, and since we have a bunch of photos from when my grandparents were married and when my dad was young, we had a good amount to choose from. Joey picked this one because he said he loves “how cute Papa looked.” Awwwww.

Now that Christmas and New Years is in our rear view mirror, it’s time to de-holiday the house and start redecorating with Valentine’s and winter themed stuff. I worked on taking down most of the trees and decorations (more tomorrow to do!) and started to bring out some of the Valentine things. Since this is our first Valentine’s day in this house, I’m looking forward to finding new homes for the decorations we do have. Sorry to say, but I’m thinking I did get rid of a lot of it when we moved last year… so I’ll need to take account of what we have and fill in the gaps of what we need.

For Christmas this year, Santa hubby gifted me with one of those Cricut cutting machines. For YEARS, and I’m talking years, I swore I didn’t want one, didn’t need one, wouldn’t use one, etc. I just couldn’t see the point of them in my art. But as I’ve started to make more and more hand cut pieces, cards and ornaments, my husband would listen to me bitch and moan about all the fussy cutting that I was doing and took note. So when I opened up the box on Christmas, I was a bit worried because I wasn’t sure how to use one and how often it would be use. Well, I’m happy to say I’ve used this damn thing every single day since we set it up and I just love it! I’m having a ball doing the various projects that are available on the Cricut app and am loving all the little ephemera and bits I’ve been able to make with it. I’ll definitely share more as I get more projects completed!

Finally, today everyone went back to school and work for our first full week back since before the holidays. It was rough getting up this morning and getting everyone out the door but we managed successfully and off they all went. I spent the entire day de-Christmassing, cleaning, cooking and baking. From these adorable gnome gingerbread cookies that my kids flipped out over when they got home, to fresh baked bread (from the bread machine!), a pork tenderloin from the Instapot and home made home fries, it was a great day of cooking and baking, on top of all the cleaning and organizing.

Ever have a day like that? Where you feel like you accomplished about a thousand things on your “to do” list but still have about 10,000 more things? That’s me this week…. but it’ll get done when it gets done. I’m not going to stress about the rest of the stuff!

All in all, it was a great weekend that went by way too fast.
