#how to read in a language

A long time ago, maybe a decade ago at this point, I looked up "how to learn to read in a language." The suggestions I ended up finding, I ended up shaping a lot of my future study plans off of - at least as a beginner.
These tips boiled down to:
Read a Grammar Guide Summary to have a generalized overview of what grammar you will see, what it means, and what grammar points you may need to look up again when reading to learn more about. (I always read these through, in a few weeks, and did not memorize. Then referenced them again when reading if I needed to figure out a particular grammar point, or found a more in depth grammar reference to use to look up stuff in depth when reading).
Look up a pronunciation guide, either a website with audio or youtube videos with audio, and listen through. (This also took a few weeks, not memorizing just going through, to get an idea of sounds in the language and things I may want to look up again later. This is also useful for making sure your mental reading 'voice' for the language is something in the range of the actual language's sounds. I neglected doing this for French until 2 years in, and then I had to do damage control and look up a bunch of pronunciation guides and listening materials to make my mental reading 'voice' something closer to actual French)
Study ~3000 common words, in sentence examples if possible, with audio if possible. (I studied anywhere from 1000 words for French in a word list with sentences I read online, to 3000 words for Japanese in memrise/anki, and the article I read with the highest suggestion was to learn the most ~9000 common words to be able to read any novel. Like with the grammar guide summary, I'd read through these words and initially 'cram study' 1000 at a time - prioritizing new study and ignoring reviews if I didn't have time, then go practice reading for a couple months to review and understand those words better in the context of what I was reading, then 'cram study' another 1000 words and instead of doing reviews I'd go back to reading, then cram study another X words if I found myself needing to 'vaguely recognize' a lot of words to understand the next thing I was interested in reading. Eventually I reached a point where bulk studying words was not useful for me, and at that point I just looked up unknown words as I read that I wanted to learn - and kept looking them up until I remembered them. And that's currently what I still do.)
Look up Graded Readers, and start reading. (I intensively read - looked up words I didn't know, or forgot the meaning of. And I extensively read - forces you to understand what you can remember, and improves reading speed).
At the point one can read some things in the language, just keep reading. (I would continue intensively reading - looking up unknown words and grammar points - if I ever wanted to learn a bunch of words 'faster' or tackle a reading material that was significantly harder than what I could handle, or I extensively read - no looking things up - stuff I could understand the main idea of. Eventually, what I could extensively read increased, and it keeps increasing as long as I keep reading things.)
It just so happens that if you follow most beginner textbooks in a class they also teach ~2000-3000 words, and many basic grammar points. Or if you use Assimil or Teach Yourself books. Or an anki deck full of common words in sentences. Or Glossika. Or The Nature Method textbooks. Sometimes beginner materials won't teach you ALL the grammar points you might want to get familiar with, so you can just look up 'grammar guide summary' online or find a good reference book or website and read for an overview on the rest of the grammar for that language. Sometimes a beginner textbook teaches a miniscule amount of words (rare, but it happens) and looking up a word list online, or an anki deck, will provide you with enough common words to start trying to read. My point with all this is: it's fairly easy to either find these resources free, or take a beginner class/material and study the information in it, needed to give you the foundation to begin reading. Once you have a 'vague familiarity' with some words and grammar, you can just start reading. You can just read, and look up words again and grammar again over and over until you remember it, and it will work. You can start reading Graded Readers as early as you're ready to try (Or even harder stuff, although the effort will be less intense if you start with easier reading material lol).
I started trying to read French within a few months of starting a French Beginner 1 class in college, because I could find a common words list and grammar guide summary online and I'd finished reading them, and wanted to try reading the news and wikipedia and some Graded Reader novels I'd found from the thrift store. So I started, and looked up words and grammar points when they were important to understanding the main idea, and I kept looking things up and kept reading. And in 6 months I could read a lot more. In 1 year I could read a lot more, and was only extensively reading at that point. I did pretty much the same strategy to learn to read Chinese (and Heavenlypath.notion.site's Comprehensive Reading Guide is quite similar to what I did, and would work well, and the same strategies could be applied to learning to read any language - I often link it because it's clearer than anything I can write, and it's a good 'learn to read' guide, like the ones I relied on so much when I was trying to figure out how to learn to read French).

Arcane is a masterclass in body language and how to properly use it in storytelling to get your message to your audience without thunking them over the head/spoon feeding it them.
Caitlyn's relationship to Vi vs her relationship to others is a great example.
Caitlyn is almost always trying to create less distance between Vi and her or "fill the gap" between them:
Cait steps over the red line in Stillwater to show Vi the evidence
After Vi ditches Cait in the brothel to jump Sevika, Cait seeks her out and saves her from Sevika
When she gives Vi the medicine for stab wound, they're breathing each other's air
She reaches across the space between them on her bed to caress Vi's face
She chases after Vi following the Council meeting not going their way
Fairly certain, she was going to go look for Vi after her shower if Jinx hadn't kidnapped her
She seeks out Vi after her dad, more or less, says he doesn't want Vi in their house. Not to kick her out but to find some comfort in being close to her (i think this is why she pushed so hard for her to be an enforcer, to keep her close)
Cait also does a fair share of looking at Vi's lips, slightly leaning in, and second guessing herself all within a span of a blink
Vi asks Cait not to change (she already has), so she closes the gap between them, and they share their first kiss as a form of reassurance
She takes down Vi mongoose style and again starts closing the gap between them by betraying Ambessa and helping Vander
Cait slightly/momentarily leans towards Vi's lips when she's pulling the bag over her head
Vi spits in her face and wipes it TOWARDS HER MOUTH and not away
After Jayce shoots Viktor and Ambessa attacks, Caitlyn has ample opportunity to go after Jinx, but she focuses on Vi and covering her back until she gets sliced across the abdomen and then she runs to her to help her to her feet
Now let's look at how Caitlyn creates gaps and space with Maddie even tho they're sleeping together:
Beginning of episode 4, while they're sitting in bed, Maddie tries to close the gap and create some intimacy. Caitlyn, in turn, leans away from her, creating space between them
Maddie is also the one trying to initiate/create emotional intimacy, and Caitlyn swerves her each time
Maddie kisses/nuzzles Caitlyn's neck, and in response, Caitlyn has the quickest expression of "eugh" before fixing her face and moving away from Maddie
Instead of leaning into the intimacy Maddie is trying to give her, Caitlyn gets up to work on something and says she'll come to bed soon
Caitlyn lets Ambessa dismiss Maddie from the room after (more than likely) overhearing the discussion about restarting the council (I really think if this were Vi, Caitlyn would've pulled rank and told her to stay)
Maddie is also very absent from the rest of s2p2, and given how we've seen Caitlyn actively seek out Vi in her absence, she honestly doesn't seem to care where Maddie is or how she's doing
And none of this is explicitly told to the audience thru dialog. All thru body language. And i just think that's really neat
#thanks for reading if you made it all the way thru#arcane#arcane brainrot#body language#body language in storytelling#caitlyn x vi#caitvi#vi x caitlyn#caitlyn kiramman#vi arcane#lesbian#sapphic#i can't stop laughing at how much Cait doesn’t want Maddie#maddie arcane#arcane spoilers

Every time I hear the words “Spanish explorer” I think of that set of remains they found in New Mexico that belonged to a conquistador who was killed with a broad axe during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and how his skull was used as a model by Bone Clones so now everybody can purchase a version and see how he died like a punk bitch.

lol
#I’m reading about the Canary Islands and the Spanish totally eradicated the native language and beliefs#so we do not know why they mummified their dead or how they do it#and we do not have mummies to study because THE SPANIARDS ATE THEM

dearest shooting star 🌠
loving anaxagoras felt similar to the momentary awe whenever you spot a shooting star. that quick, brilliant flash of light streaking across the midnight sky, so vivid and arrogantly defiant against the moon.
i shine brighter than you, it would say to the soft glow of the moonlight illuminating the late night. this shooting star was so bright that it seemingly cut a large swathe across like very definite sword strike, all the while burning up the rest of itself during the end of their cosmic journey. so look only at me.
"Your students looked quite... apoplectic." You look observed, tone filled with knowing amusement as you watched his students amble their way out of his classroom with varying expressions of frustration. Or in some cases, with a look of absolute vengeance. "A lively morning earlier then, yes?"
Anaxagoras doesn't quite chuckle, but the small, involuntary huff as his lips curved slightly in smug glee gives away his current sentiment regarding his students. His form tilted slightly forward as he turned to face you, a pair of vivid seafoam eyes gleaming brightly with all the knowledge and intellect that captivated your attention like a treacherous lure.
It's both fortunate and unfortunate (for your heart), that your own class ends at just around the time that his class ends—with the bell tolling overhead to signal the students to do a self-study session (or exchange shared moments of misery) at numerous amphitheaters or at the central library of the Grove.
"As always, our class ended with another debate."
"About the gods, Professor?"
"Naturally." Given his rather vocal stance as a blasphemer, it was no surprise that his students had seen fit to challenge him to yet another debate. More likely in hopes to humble him rather than commit to any intellectual exchange, you mused. "And as always, they are infuriated whenever I poke out the holes in their arguments."
"Their collective spite would end up with you getting killed one day, you know?" A lie. For as notorious as Anaxagoras had been in criticizing the actions of the Flame-Chase Journey right alongside, his students had somehow decided that he was deserving of their gifts and...other knick knacks that you were most definitely sure were priceless antiques.
Poor Hyacine who's been given more work by the rising mess around his office, no doubt. Although Anaxagoras' new student named Phainon had been mentioned as some sort of precious antique collector and appraiser, which made organizing things much easier, if any.
"If they commit as much dedication to verbally eviscerate me on court trials and debates, they should focus it on their thesis proposals." The sneer in his face made your lips quirk into a smile.
"You should really stop goading your cute little students, Professor Anaxagoras."
He opened his mouth, likely retorting his favorite correction before realization caught his would-be misstep. The small "tch" made your smile widen even as he shot you a warning glare, not missing your clear attempt at throwing him off despite following his numerous insistence regarding the matter with his name. "Telling me how to handle my students now, Professor?"
It should feel criminal how your name comes out of his mouth in a slow, lilting drawl. Almost indulging, if you were to entertain your own fanciful whispers.
"Just a word of advice as a fellow lecturer." But his unimpressed look told you as much about just how convincing your excuse is.
loving anaxagoras felt like loving a shooting star. there is joy in catching that moment of fleeting beauty across the sky, knowing that it would forever be different from any other shooting stars in the world. but like all things, even shooting stars are unforgiving towards their admirers.
they were utterly beautiful in their destruction, the broken fragments carrying with it such a devastating power that perhaps a part of you would break in return; echoing the shatter of a brilliant celestial body with your own hapless heart.
"What did you do?" You rushed to ask, voice trembling ever so slightly as you looked at the ragged exhaustion across Anaxagoras' face.
"Merely created something that puts us in equal standing with the gods." He sounded victorious, as if the price of his triumph wasn't riddled with blood and pain. Anaxagoras looked inappropriately disheveled, clothes rumpled and singed at some of the hems—pale blue hair clinging to his face that was full of grime and sweat and a few cuts here and there. "And I have succeeded in finally making it useable."
There are tremors in his hands, visible ones and you couldn't take your eyes away from the inflamed skin where the bright red of the Philosopher's stone adorned his right hand. Instantly, you feel the impossibly heavy weight of his trust in allowing you inside his personal alchemical laboratory.
There's a myriad of things that you could say to him, and yet all of it would make you nothing more than a hypocrite who allowed the one that you cherished most to completely ruin himself in pursuit of knowledge. All those years that had you faithfully shadowing him in his unquenchable thirst for answers, barely managing to reel him back just in time before he truly hurtled towards the deep end.
All those years of endless exasperation and countless debates as you hurried to catch up to him, all of it cultivated into biting back down a few choices of words directed at his dangerous recklessness. "Really? Treating yourself so poorly while you're in an experimental binge doesn't quite count as a logical course of action."
You hurriedly knelt down beside him as you brought out a roll of fresh bandages from your satchel, and he was mindful enough to not give you much grief as he obediently placed his trembling hands in your hands.
"Am I ever in danger with my own experiments?" His retort made you purse your lips as you carefully started tending to his wounds, a deep frown crossing your face for all that your hands remained gentle in treating his injuries.
The silence that followed, was a little stifled. Even with you, as immersed in your irritation and worries, didn't fail to notice the tension lining over his shoulders.
"This won't be the last." In the end, it was Anaxagoras who broke the silence, sounding a little gruff as he ducked his head to avoid your gaze. "I still need to find the answers to my new questions... far too many thing—"
"Be that as it may," you interrupted his halfhearted reasons with a pointed glare, "you are still expected to teach your own students instead of passing all them off to me every time you get possessed in doing your experiments!"
He tilted his head in consideration, as if only belatedly recalling that he had spent longer in his laboratory than he had expected.
"The brats should know better than compare you with me." The stupid, foolish, heretic scholar with one of the sharpest minds of today, missed your very non-subtle show of concern. Amazing. Truly a mind of the ages indeed. "And besides, you're the only one that wouldn't revise my lesson plan without consulting me first. Or make those impressionable students learn something that they shouldn't waste their time."
"No, I just want to get them off me because I'm tired of grading forty students every week on two different subjects."
"..." The foolish professor didn't even try to object, knowing better than to test your limits.
You also refrained from pointing out that his students have this weird tendency to debate with any professors that even dared to make them stray off his meticulous curriculum, for all that they are keen to put him through the wringer for at least once before they could graduate. "No personal laboratory time for at least a while."
"You can't possibly demand that of me."
The smile on your face dared him to argue any further than this. "I believe Hyacine would appreciate being notified of your... occupational injuries."
There's another beat of silence, but it was a little easier this time. Familiar.
Although your worries still made your chest grow tight, his disgruntled look soothed something within you as he obediently tilted his head up for you to dab at the small cuts and abrasions across his face.
Even more, the victory was sweeter when Anaxagoras eventually grumbled in defeat.
loving anaxagoras felt a little like condemning yourself to watching the fleeting destruction of a shooting star. you, a criminal who was sentenced to chase and watch the one that you loved the most, meet his own end with the most joyous laugh that you've heard from him.
anaxagoras who would completely burn up himself upon reaching the zenith of his journey, content in defying the tranquility of the evening night in a blaze of brilliant light. the false sky, as he had claimed, with eyes sparkling like the simulated constellations in the astronomy laboratory where alchemy fabricates a sky without the threat of aquila's temperamental gaze.
how you wanted, to valiantly preserve that shine without losing the brilliance that belonged to anaxagoras and his endless curiosity. except he was the kind of person who was never meant to be caged, confined and conforming to conventional ideas.
because he was always and foremost, meant to be free.
(and you could only hope that he can come back to you from time to time, if his time permits it; which was a factor that was slowly getting dwindling with each passing day.)
...Perhaps you'd have known it then, that he wouldn't simply just stop at embedding a Philosopher's stone in his right hand. That nothing could truly ever satiate his thirst in finding out the intricacies wrapped around Amphoreus and the ever-enduring Flame-Chase journey.
That he would embody your most favorite celestial body in all its vivid, and gut-wrenching beauty like this.
"Anaxa—are you crazy?!"
You saw him, slumped over the pillars of the central table while the contents in his personal laboratory which looked as if a veritable storm had swept upon it. Potions and vials lay shattered all over the ground, his alchemical gun lying innocuously beside him while numerous papers full of almost unrecognizable scrawls were scattered on the floor.
For a brief, frightening moment, you feared the worst.
"My name...is Anaxa...goras," he rasped after a moment, lone eye a little dull and unfocused as he struggled to recollect his thoughts when you rushed over to him. "Do not...call me Anaxa."
"And very soon, those words will be your last words if you don't get to the Courtyard as fast you can!" Panic was laced in your voice as you tried to check whether he had any debilitating injuries that require a mad dash to the Courtyard.
(Thin. He's thinner again.)
"This is a...culmination of my life's research and a milestone...regarding my capabilities," he argued, wheezing as he bared his teeth in an attempt to hide his pain when he tried to shift his position as you carefully prodded at his form.
"Which would be utterly useless if you don't make a patent of it while you're still alive," you snapped, finally letting out a breath when your preliminary search yielded nothing but a couple of bruises and symptoms of dehydration alongside exhaustion. "Have you truly decided to throw your life away like the foolish blasphemer that you are?"
Ever since he came back from that one conversation with Empedocles after he'd lost his eye, you know that he was a little different.
Sharper perhaps, much more intense as he had been before. Yet he looked perpetually weary, for all that his back stood tall and unwavering while handing out criticisms and advice for his students and fellow scholars.
As if he was always desperately running towards something that remained just out of reach.
"Why...do you care anyway? You're always so...meddlesome." The question made your heart grow still. It felt like being in the middle of Aidonia's harshest snowstorm, the wind howling at your foolishness for daring to even hope. "Don't you understand...why I must...do this?"
He is so thoughtlessly cruel at times, your dearest shooting star.
"I can't accept that what you're doing is so important that you would throw away your entire life for it." You didn't beg, but all of your emotions saturated each and every word. "Please, just take a break, Anaxagoras. There is time. You have time."
"Nothing is more important than seeing the Truth...of the false sky." His voice was hoarse, yet unwavering with the weight of his own conviction and obsessive desire. "And proving that...the Flame-Chase journey is not so linear in its approach. Everything else...was just an afterthought."
"Perhaps I had thought too highly of our time spent together." It hurt, when you could sense nothing but the genuine truth laced in his words. He's definitely suffered some sort of altered mental status right now, but it did little to lessen the sting. "And that my effort towards a dear colleague and companion, was nothing more than a show of charity in your eyes."
Anaxagoras didn't speak, nor did he even need to, as he had finally passed out in abject exhaustion and pain-filled sleep.
(Perhaps it was the best, that he couldn't hear the bitter disappointment in your voice.)
You allowed yourself a look, a last glance, feeling like you've swallowed knives with each indication of self-neglect over his form. His clothes were bigger than it should be on him, not to the point of fright but enough just to indicate how much he's foregone sustenance at least multiple times. Likewise, there's a clear expression of exhaustion in his face. His clothes were disheveled, likely from his latest stunt more than an unconscious habit—but he looked utterly... small in that moment.
It would be easy to hate him. To rage and hate his foolishness, the ease in how he discarded his own present in favor of crafting a future that he had decided that was not his to see. The sheer hypocrisy by how passionate he was in insisting the sanctity of life and autonomy over "misguided notions" of honor and obligation, when each of his choices had contributed to his eventual ruin.
But you couldn't.
Despite all your frustrations and concerns, you never would be able to hate him for as much as you cherish him.
You know you were not so important as to be able to anchor his feet, but you can't help but wish you were.
loving anaxa meant suffering from daring to attempt that you could handle the intensity of a shooting star. it's like being a moth drawn to his vibrant flame, helplessly oblivious to the eventual agony of being burned alive.
you loved still loved your shooting star who had captivated your attention so tightly, before he spirited your heart away from your hands without any intention of returning it. nor even trying to take care of it.
anaxagoras was a great many things, but he was also utterly oblivious at the best of times. you should have created a boundary with him early on, to rein in your feelings as soon as your traitorous heart thundered at the sight of his bright, satisfied smile.
(but you didn't. and equally hurt and filled you with humility for every time you could see a part of anaxa that perhaps few or rather, none had ever been privy to see it.)
your blasphemer was always meant for great things, regardless if he would be scorned or admired for his actions.
and you could only watch and try to help him when he has burned himself too early in his journey towards searching for the truth of this world.
the astronomy laboratory was one of your favorite ventures, and you keep to your silence even as the door opened to welcome the familiar clack of footsteps coming towards the center of the laboratory.
"...I didn't know that there's someone using the astronomy laboratory."
"It's occupied." your voice was clipped, sparing only the barest words as you didn't bother to turn around and acknowledge the illustrious anaxagoras. there was a brief pause, before you heard a rustling sound as he carefully sat down beside you.
ever since that day, when you had rushed anaxagoras into the courtyard after he had collapsed, you decided to keep your distance. a futile attempt at drawing a boundary when you've already reached a point in no return, but you held strong even when hyacine had cautiously asked if you would like to visit him even just once.
it was more for your sake than his, and you were confident that he wouldn't even notice—for all that he's dedicated his focus and attention to his dogged pursuit of the truth.
"You weren't present to the general meeting with all the Professors." it took everything in you not to flinch when you felt the weight of his gaze on the side of your face.
"I was busy." you were very much grateful that the darkness hid much of your expression as you drew your knees close to yourself.
"Busy with what?" he probed, because he never did have a sense of self-restraint when it comes to satiating his curiosity. "Hyacine told me that you asked to be relieved of another class to handle. And that you also applied for a...sabbatical leave."
the latter sentence echoed his mystified confusion, the notion of a vacation apparently being a foreign one to the foolish scholar.
"I'm accompanying Hyacine and Phainon on their usual visit back to Okhema." there, that should be enough to get him off your back and leave.
except it doesn't.
"You've never shown any interest in leaving the Grove for that holy city." it was evident how poorly he had regarded the capital with the eternal light, and you've heard his sentiments regarding a certain chrysos heir residing in the city often enough to understand his position.
but you didn't care much for that.
what pricked at your still smarting heart was—
"I don't need to report to you nor justify any of my actions to you for anything, Professor Anaxagoras." you replied, voice chillingly cold and void of your hurt as much as you can. "As you have made yourself quite clear on my interference to your pursuit of knowledge."
There was another pause, the fabric of his coat rustling as he abruptly moved closer to you.
"That day when you rushed me into the courtyard," his voice was faintly urgent, promptly you to finally give a glance at his pinched expression with a carefully distant look. except the faint unease within his piercing eyes made your traitorous heart flutter once again. "Did I say anything?"
this close, you could see that hyacine's work had lessened the exhaustion and overall gauntness of the scholar's face. despite you still childishly holding on to your anger, you felt a tension within you finally relax.
"Nothing but the truth, Professor." it was maddening, how your anger was quietly doused by seeing just how much he had recovered (even if you could still sense an air of weariness around him).
"That's not—" anaxagoras tsked, ever astute in deducing a hint from your response. "I said something."
you kept silent, because you refuse to be considered a puzzle where he would look for clues to satisfy his own questions. no, it would hurt you far too much if he treated what had happened as nothing more than a logical problem to be straightened out.
(it would be like holding out your still mending heart for him to destroy.)
"Whatever it was, it was enough for you to refuse a visit to me at the ward." the intensity in his gaze proved too much, and you ducked your head to look away from him. you saw his hand make an aborted move towards you, before it stopped and curled into a tight fist. "It happened when you caught me in my personal laboratory, and I was cognizant enough to respond but not enough to retain the memories of our brief interaction before you brought me to the Courtyard. You're angry. And I hurt you."
your foolish scholar had known nothing but the thorny path that would lead to his goals, and it was your own foolish decision to chase after him like a persistent shadow. in the end, everything can be traced back to your own decision to accompany him for so long—like that hapless moth who was drawn to the raging inferno that was anaxagoras the blasphemer.
you knew that he would change the world, at any and at all costs. even if the damning price was to ruin himself in the process.
"What did I say?" he asked again and... abruptly, you felt very tired.
forget it.
"It's alright," you murmured, finally looking up to give him a lopsided smile. don't worry, went unheard. "It was...my fault more than yours."
there was another pause again, before he spoke again.
"I am in need of a...companion for Hyacine to finally relinquish her watch on me." he said, stumbling over a particular word while you gave an inquiring hum.
you like to think that you know the undertone of his statement. don't go.
but you never truly left him, even in the height of your anger and hurt. hyacine would never fail to give you updates regarding his wellbeing and any additional expenses quietly paid for by you (under the guise of an anonymous benefactor), and combined with her stubbornness and the threat of making ika sit on his chest was enough for him to veer off from going back to his laboratory far too soon.
"...I can do that." it would be another story if you saw his main table and be reminded of how you initially saw him, but that was a thing for the future.
his shoulders slumping over slightly made a smile finally crack across your face, and he swiftly closed the remaining distance to rest his weight against yours.
"Good." and he sounded like he meant it.
you know that anaxagoras doesn't apologize for his actions, not because of pride but because he would not regret any of the actions that he had made. that each of his actions were driven with a purpose that would ultimately bring him closer to his goals.
when his hand carefully rested above yours after a while, the warmth spoke more than his clumsy attempts at making it for his apparent misstep. you gazed back upon the twinkling constellations, with the weight of anaxagoras' presence sitting close to your side.
your shooting star, if only for a moment, paused in his relentless pursuit to accompany you for the night.
it wasn't quite an apology, but it was more than enough.
(p.s. first time trying to do this so please tell me your thoughts? would you also want an anaxa pov to compliment this hehe)

WOW this has been ROUGH in the Life Events category of things, but. slowly crawling out of that. hopefully
this was the opening scene for a something I started writing after watching the Manben inverview with Nishi Keiko and thinking back to all the classic shoujo manga I stayed up reading back in the day, like damn that's so true Urasawa Naoki
it's partially a love letter to all the greats of the genre that I read, and also to the late night teleseryses that captivated me over the years lmao. it'd be nice to find the time to tackle it properly as a comic, but I'm having fun working on it recreationally :)
✨but since it's recreational, some character info✨
the first character seen is lawrence 'law' valenciano (late 30s), the one with the glasses is cris volante (mid-later 20s). law works at a karinderya, cris is an extremely broke university student.
⭐ places I’m at! bsky / pixiv / pillowfort /cohost / cara.app / insta / tip jar!
#komiks tag#original tag#there's a bit about how shoujo manga pays a lot of attention to hair and ngl its SO true and such a huge influence on my own art#did not realize it until then but when it came to things like hair i did turn more frequently to CLAMP and etc over any big name shonen#artist. and ofc. im a lifelong CLAMP fan. it was just interesting to listen to in discussion! genres are a language and each conveys#what they need to. ofc you get things like genre convention defying things like x1999 which just kind of. melt your brain a bit#ANYWAY i actually started re reading marmalade boy after this interview which was. idk why that one came to mind first#but you can probably guess where that impacted this story idea lmaoo. i am trying to track down a bunch of gender blender josei#manga i read in highschool. god. remember paradise kiss. damn those visuals were killer

here’s the OTHER leaker translation I would explode out of existence
listen.
I know, okay?
I know everyone loves this. I know everyone lost their shit for it. But I hate it.
I will admit honestly that it is 70% abject fury over the misuse of one word. Another 20% is frustration over how the fandom reacted to the official translation with such vitriol and how the leaker fueled it with their smug comments. That final 10% amounts to what some might consider pedantic or nitpicky. But I don't care.
This translation sucks. It doesn't sound cool, it doesn't sound threatening, and the leaker's rookie mistakes ruin what makes this moment great for me.
Allow me to elaborate.
The emphasis is on the wrong part
I’ve talked about some of the pronoun differences in this line before, but did you know Katsuki also changes the particles every time?
‘Cause I sure don’t think the leaker noticed. Grammar particles are what determine the relationship between words in a sentence. They pack a lot of punch, denoting subject, object, indirect object, purpose, location, time, origin point, direction of movement, means or method—and a bunch more shit that can be hard to describe.
Word order and particles work together to direct our attention to specific parts of a sentence, emphasizing the importance of what is being said. They are some of the most difficult parts of Japanese for learners to grasp and use with the same ease that native speakers do. I’m acutely aware of this weakness, so I often pay particular attention to them. Let’s break down how each iteration shifts the meaning and emphasis of the base sentence.
First time
Chapter 322 おまえが拭えねぇもんは俺たちが拭う omae ga nuguenee mon wa oretachi ga nuguu
Katsuki uses ga with both the second person pronoun for Izuku and the first person plural pronoun for himself and Class 1-A. Ga emphasizes the word that comes directly before it, so this focuses not on the verb itself, but the persons doing the verb. Katsuki's first person plural pronoun oretachi of course means "we," but if you wanted to highlight his literal meaning, he's saying: "the things you cannot handle, me and the people with me will handle."
Second time
Chapter 323 てめーが拭えねーもんはこっちで拭う temee ga nuguenee mon wa kocchi de nuguu
Here, Katsuki retains ga for Izuku’s second person pronoun, but changes both his first person pronoun and its particle, giving us kocchi de. This shifts the implication of who is doing the act—the first time, Katsuki's "we" pronoun highlighted the classmates who accompanied him and acted with him to help save Izuku. But by the time he says this line again, a number of people outside their class have stepped forward to defend Izuku’s return to UA.
Unlike distinctly singular pronouns like ore, kocchi both refers to oneself and something greater than oneself. By switching to this, Katsuki expands that narrow “me and the people with me” into “our side,” presenting the people who support Izuku as a unified force.
You see, kocchi de subtly shifts the verb to being executed by subject(s) defined by a specific characteristic or condition.
Explanations of particle de from Mainichi Nonbiri. The heading and explanation read, "Subject: 'De' is used to denote the subject who deals with or engages in the action expressed by the predicate."
The first example uses jibun de (by oneself) to describe the conditions under which the listener is asked to execute the verb. The third uses gikai de (in the parliament or by the parliament, as a governing body representing many people) to explain the plurality and nature of the subject executing the verb.
The second example uses socchi de, which is the second person "you" version of kocchi, meaning your side. With this, you can see the purpose is to highlight division: "you did that over there on your side of things without any input from me."
Kocchi de as Katsuki uses it likewise creates "sides" by highlighting connection.
These details emphasize Izuku as the person who cannot handle these things and the relationship he has with the people supporting him, a collective Katsuki aligns himself with.
If we maintain this emphasis and the conditions in a literal way, we have: "The things you cannot handle, our side will handle for you."
Third time
Chapter 405 OFA(あいつ)に拭えねーもんはこっちで拭うってなあぁああ!!! OFA (aitsu) ni nuguenee mon wa kocchi de nuguutte naaaa!!!
I want you to look really close at the particle ni.
Then look at the way the first word balloon ends with the particle wa.
And hear me when I say that this does not emphasize Izuku.
Ni is not a particle for emphasis. If Izuku's personal inability to handle AFO were being highlighted, Katsuki could have used には, which I talk about briefly in this post:
The combination of the two particles ni and wa are used to emphasize, compare, and contrast. This is extremely telling just on its own. Izuku is emphasizing the fact that, compared to everyone he could possibly tell, he cannot tell Katsuki this. He might be able to tell other people, but when it comes to Katsuki, he cannot. Ienai does not specify where the limitation stems from, but ni wa sure implies it.
If Katsuki wanted to disparage Izuku in comparison to himself, like "that guy obviously can't handle you, so I'll do it," he would have said something like this. He even could have slapped his own singular pronoun and ga in there (俺が拭う) to emphasize himself as an individual actor. But that's not what he did.
The particle wa tells us what the topic is. Neither Katsuki nor Izuku are the topic in any iteration of this line; they are subjects engaging with the verbs. The topic is "the things OFA (that guy) can't handle."
Now, because every other time Katsuki said this line had ga in it too, wa wasn't quite as strong as it is this third time. If ga emphasizes what comes before it, then wa emphasizes what comes after. It tells us, "this is the topic, now hold onto your seats."
Katsuki is emphasizing the predicate and the verb. What's gonna happen and how it's gonna happen.
He's saying, "our side is gonna fucking crush you."
The wa particle and the separate balloons build tension, suspense, and excitement—which the leaker instantly deflates. By front-loading Katsuki as both topic and subject ("I'm the guy"), the emphasis is no longer on the promise of destruction he will deliver on.
The emphasis is indisputably on the part after the balloon break, so the mention of Izuku ("when that nerd can't handle it all on his own") reads weirdly like an insult. Hell, most of the words the leaker uses are about Izuku's inability to handle the situation, which bloat the second half of the line and effectively kill the momentum.
Fumbling the flow of a line is a common mistake for amateur translators. Sometimes, it's hard to avoid because Japanese grammar is often the inverse of English grammar; maintaining the original order may render it awkward or even unintelligible.
But that is not the case here.
pikahlua's literal translation
There's no reason to reorder the clauses. You can spruce up the wording, but the lines are perfectly understandable and effective in this order even at their most literal.
The leaker chose to reorder the lines this way, and their translation is worse for it.
Viz Comparison
Official translation by Viz
After what I've said about particles, pacing, and emphasis, I think you can plainly see that the official translator understood these details and made his own choices to highlight them.
Any time you get text with furigana (explained here), you have to decide how to incorporate those dual pieces of information into the text. He could have translated this as "that guy couldn't keep you in the ground," but instead he prioritized the reference to OFA.
By doing this, Viz's translation avoids the implication of insult towards Izuku that the leaker falls prey to.
He also made the choice to translate kocchi as "we."
First, I’m bringing this post back around to remind people that kocchi is a pronoun of ambiguous plurality. This means that an interpretation of “we” is just as correct as an interpretation of “I.” Readers may interpret it differently, but on simply linguistic grounds, they are of equal validity. You will often see this kind of ambiguous language used in Japanese, even with characters that are forthright. The reason is one part cultural expectation that the listener will read between the lines, and one part a willingness to accept two things as simultaneously true. This exists and is frequently found in English as well, there just isn’t a direct parallel for kocchi itself.
A number of people were infuriated by this, because they felt some sort of bkdk moment was erased by Katsuki saying "we" rather than "I."
Yet it seemed like these same people were also mad one week prior when the leaker and the official translator worded Katsuki's rallying cry slightly differently.
Chapter 404. Leaker, left. Official, right.
The claim there was apparently that the official translator was ignoring Katsuki's character development.
And like, which is it, guys? Do you want him centering the collective or himself?
The fact is that the official translation's characterization of Katsuki in the final battle is internally consistent with itself, while the leaker's is all over the goddamn place. Let us never forget that the leaker was just straight up WRONG here while the official got it exactly right.
Chapter 408. Leaker, left. Official, right.
People were losing their shit that Viz made Katsuki "insult himself" and "expect failure" as though he's never used temee to refer to himself self-deprecatingly before.
And then the leaker just had to pretend that didn't happen in the next fucking chapter, while the official got to correctly reiterate their interpretation like they were taking a victory lap.
Chapter 409. Leaker, left. Official, right.
All of this makes it unbelievably rich for the leaker to go and say shit like this:
The leaker is an amateur translator. They spent ages stealing an artist's work and releasing it illegally for a profit with shoddy translations and misleading, even outright false "summaries."
Based on the nature of their translation mistakes, it is obvious to me that they are not fluent in Japanese, yet here they are bragging about their inability to understand how kocchi could mean "we."
Right before the line in question, Katsuki emphasizes himself as an individual in declaring himself to be the final boss.
Chapter 405 俺がラスボスだ AFO!! ore ga rasu bosu da AFO!!
And then, by using ってな, Katsuki is basically quoting himself.
"I said we were gonna handle what that guy couldn't, didn't I!?"
This suggests he is repeating the established meaning for emphasis, not changing it. If kocchi was plural when he said it in chapter 323, it's reasonable for it to still be plural here. Katsuki is not ignoring himself as an individual by doing this; he is rubbing it in AFO's face that neither he nor Izuku are solitary actors fighting this battle alone, they both belong to something greater than themselves.
I'm gonna step up on a soapbox for a bit.
I am kinda tired of people calling Japanese vague. I often see it used to imply Japanese is inherently hard to understand or that it doesn't have the capacity for specificity. Like any language, Japanese can be used to express specific, clear, and direct information. While it is true Japanese culture values indirectness as a way to maintain harmony, I would like to challenge the ethnocentricism I feel sometimes goes unaddressed in this topic.
Japanese is less tolerant of repetition and verbal excess than English is; information that has been established should only be repeated for a purpose. Japanese speakers expect their conversation partners to maintain awareness of context, social expectations, and specific interpersonal information to grasp the intended meaning of their words. Specificity is doled out when it is warranted or desired.
Specificity divides one thing from another, drawing lines in the sand and saying "this is this, and that is that." English often requires repetitive specificity to even be grammatically comprehensible. And while this might not be directly related, many English-speaking countries tend to have a more individualistic outlook on society than collectivist countries like Japan.
To me, "vague" often smacks of a value judgment: "there should be division here, and there isn't."
I said earlier that kocchi creates division by highlighting sides, us vs. them, but when people press on and ask, "but did he say we or I? which did he REALLY mean?" I just want to say that really? truly? he meant both. all of the above.
I think it is unproductive to think of Japanese as vague just because it doesn't exclude possibilities as often or as strongly as English does. I think it is a lot more useful and interesting to think of Japanese as expansive.
Why should there be division between Katsuki and the people fighting by his side? Why should he separate himself from the people who saved his life and risked their own in relentless pursuit of their common, heroic goal?
Why is it unacceptable to imagine an "I" belonging so sincerely and wholly to a "we" that their voices are one?
Katsuki's words reflect the fact that this fight being fought by a collective, a team.
In this context, OFA is a weapon in their arsenal, just as Katsuki himself is.
He is a force of nature, an agent of their willpower.

Chapter 404
He rode upon the winds of their prayers, ushered on by Izuku's hopes
and his own regrets,

to change the course of fate itself.
For much of the series, Katsuki is our beacon of individualism, of defiant refusal to bend to the will and expectations of others.
But Katsuki is also our image of victory. He shows us how to face our failures and change our hearts. He is our proof that rejecting others only hurts us in the end—his love for Izuku and Izuku's love for him is the story's greatest proof that as human beings, we are not better alone, we are better with each other. Other people change us, inspire us, and we do the same for them.
We need each other. We belong to each other.
It is in this final battle where Katsuki becomes his truest self, overcoming every obstacle in his path, making up for every painful regret in his heart, and utilizing every single thing in his grasp to save and win.
If Katsuki ever truly belonged to something bigger than himself, it is in this moment right here.
English divides the one from the many, and while that has its benefits, I think there is real, honest beauty to be found in a word that smooths those lines in the sand until there is no distinction at all.
That's who the fucking "we" is, rukasu.
Now onto my next gripe.
Katsuki is supposed to sound badass here
Frankly, the fan fury surrounding Viz's use of "we" completely overshadowed the fact that the phrase "One For All couldn't keep you in the ground" is fucking metal.
It rules. I'm fucking jealous I didn't write those words. It is such a good translation and it packs so much punch and I wouldn't have thought of it in a thousand years.
The official translator focuses his efforts on genre-specific tone translation, and sometimes he really nails it. I will freely admit that I find his style grating or overwrought at times, and indeed, one of his key weaknesses is that the flavor of comic-book dialogue he pulls from can sound one generation too old to be cool.
One of the most damning examples of this is him having Katsuki utter the word "bub"—
Chapter 406
—which I think no English-speaker under the age of 30 had actually heard before Deadpool & Wolverine came out.
Honestly, if you just read Wolverine comics from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, you can see the character archetype he leans into for Katsuki's dialogue. 405's tagged-on "—and then some!!" is straight out of American action movies.
But the main point here is that Katsuki is taunting AFO and threatening him. He blows up AFO's face, announces himself as the final boss, then vows to kick his ass to death on behalf of everyone. It's amazing.
The line sounds cool as fuck in Japanese. The "naaaa" flourish at the end is nearly untranslatable in any direct way that still captures the appeal and impact of it.
I tend to think of sentence enders like this as flavor text or tone tags. To properly convey them in English, you may have to add a bunch of words, and you have to choose them carefully.
All of this is to say, the official translation tries pretty hard to make Katsuki sound cool. Do they succeed? I think to an extent, they do.
I actually think it's possible the translator did recognize the callback, but wasn't satisfied with the effect of repeating it. You can see that "finish the job" is supposed to link Izuku's actions to theirs, while also sounding grandiose and final.
The Viz translator might've simply prioritized showcasing the cool-guy threat while maintaining the collectivist angle, rather than matching the callback word for word. I don't really think that's the best choice, but I can see why it might be made.
The leaker's translation doesn't make any real effort to up the ante. Maybe this line is cool to somebody, but it ain't me.
In fact, are we ever gonna acknowledge that the leaker's translation just scoops up most of its wording from the official release of chapters 322 and 323?
"I'm the guy who steps in when that nerd can't handle it all on his own!!"
The leaker was not responsible for these translations, but just look at how other people tried to grapple with Katsuki's metaphor.
In fact, the only person whose choice of words prophetically matched Viz was pikahlua, four days before the official release:
And even then, you can see that "step in when" is unique to Viz.
I'm not saying that similarities in translation are unacceptable or that directly referencing the official release is bad, but I do find it truly incredible they had the gall to shit-talk the official translator after cheating off his damn homework.
The leaker basically contributed six words: "I'm the guy who" and "that nerd." I personally disagree with "the guy who" as a translation addition, just because I think it too strongly isolates him in a way that using "I" and "I'm" by themselves do not, but it wouldn't have been terrible if they had also maintained the original clause order: "One For All couldn't handle you... but I'm the guy who—", something like that.
This brings us to my final gripe.
Katsuki did not say “that nerd.”
The leaker made that shit up, they inserted it for no reason and ignored the two pronouns the original text actually provides, OFA and aitsu (that guy).
In the manga, Katsuki has never called Izuku a nerd to villains, not once. It is rare for him to use it while speaking to someone other than Izuku, period. It’s an insulting pet name he uses towards Izuku or while muttering angrily to himself about Izuku.
To be clear, the narrator who uses "shitty nerd" is not Katsuki, they merely validate the accuracy of his nickname for Izuku. Yes, I just linked to my tag for the whole damn 348 chapter, because I've argued against this theory a lot, just read 'em all, it's a good time.
By my count, he only uses it once while talking to Todoroki in chapter 42 and once to Ochako in a 5-page bonus chapter for the first character guide, set shortly after chapter 65. Both take place very early in the series and both are examples of his intense grudge against Izuku.
Did you know that the last time Katsuki uses "nerd" towards Izuku directly is in chapter 320?
Who's ignoring Katsuki's character development again?
The fact is the word doesn't exist in 405's text, and there just isn't precedent for him to say it to All For One.
Trash-talk doesn’t work if your opponent has no clue what the hell you’re talking about. AFO would have no idea who “that nerd” is even supposed to be, because they were not already discussing Izuku, unlike both canon instances of Katsuki using it in conversation with others. The audibly-pronounced aitsu just means "that guy over there (physically near neither you nor me)" and you could argue that is unclear, too, but it's relatively neutral and context clues everyone in to the fact that he means Izuku, with whom he just did an explosive, flying duo move.
I think some bkdk fans were keen to see him use the tsundere insult we all love so much, but it just doesn't read right to me. Writing an insult towards Izuku into this kind of line, even an affectionate one, misdirects the aggression and fails to highlight how Katsuki makes a mockery of AFO during their fight.
I really do think it undercuts how, in his big moment of taunting the greatest villain in history, Katsuki brings up making good on a vow he made to Izuku.
And let's not forget that there is a definitive moment where Katsuki references his relationship with Izuku while taunting AFO:
Chapter 406
To roast the villain for his stupidity in misidentifying him, Katsuki loudly announces himself to be Bakugou no Kacchan.
Katsuki proudly identifies himself with the cutesy nickname his childhood friend has used for him their whole damn lives. That's a far cry from somebody who'd insult Izuku just to hype himself up.
So, no, I don't accept "that nerd." I think the leaker just added it to make their translation sound cooler, but they did so at the expense of Katsuki's character. It's tacky, cheap, and not based in any honest reading of the text.
Put the nickname in your fanworks however brings you joy. Really, go for it, I know I sure do!
But let's not pretend Katsuki said it here.
In conclusion
Katsuki's dialogue offers a unique array of challenges to translators. I would never argue that he is easy to translate, and so much of his characterization is expressed in the minutiae of what he says. Much of his dialogue contains layers of meaning, and any translator is going to have to make a call about how to interpret those layers and what to highlight.
I made this post to say my piece about a translation tons of English-speaking fans love. In the process of dissecting what frustrated me about it, I researched and studied and learned so much.
And to be honest with you, I don't know that I have a solution for this line. I thought of a ton of options:
One For All couldn't keep you in the ground... but we're here to step in and finish the job once and for all!!
I promised we'd step in when that guy couldn't handle it on his own... and I fucking meant it!!
After all, what One For All can't handle... he's got us here to handle for him!!
One For All couldn't stop you… so it's a good thing that guy's got us here to step in and finish the job!!
If the guy with One For All can't get it done alone... then we're here to take you down for him!!
Maybe One For All couldn't handle the job alone... but our side is still gonna kick your ass!!
Some of them are very fun, and each highlights a different set of priorities: collectivism, connection, coolness, intimidation, and so on.
But you could pick apart my words the same way I picked apart the leaker's and Viz's.
There will never be a one true translation. There can't be. For as many readers as there are, there are just as many interpretations to what Katsuki's words mean and what is important about them.
In every translation, you face loss—loss of information, loss of specificity, loss of ambiguity, loss of emotionality, loss of cultural meaning. Your job as a translator is to lose as little as possible, and to make sure you can stomach the things you do lose.
You also gain things in translation. New meanings, new layers, new cultural implications. By showing the audience what you see and choosing how you say it to them, you add something of yourself to the work. You can't not.
As a translator, I want to keep learning and trying and going beyond. I want to do right by the things I translate. I want to share the things I love with other people and figure out, as best I can, how to make them see what is beautiful about it.
Unlike Bakugou Katsuki, we translators can never achieve a perfect victory.
But it's always worth trying.
#I love Bakugou Katsuki#I love him with all my heart#he is my hero#he has given me so much#volume 40 comes out officially in English tomorrow#and if this line gets revised I'll laugh my ass off#and probably think about this all over again#really I'll never stop thinking about this stuff#because as much shit-talking as I'm doing here#it really is so so exciting to see how other people translate things#I love language#I love manga#and I love Bakugou no Kacchan#image of victory#and perfect boy#a creature of love#who loved another boy so truly and so deeply#that I dedicated hours and months and years of my life to learning Japanese even better#so I could see him properly#thank you Kacchan#and thank you to everyone who reads my blog#I think this is the longest fucking post on my blog ever so if you made it to the end#seriously#thank you#mha 322#mha 323#mha 404#mha 405#mha 406#mha 408

whenever i rewatch criminal minds episodes i'm always reminded that emily is actually crazy good at her job
today i was rewatching seven seconds (best cm episode ever btw nothing will ever top seven seconds) and if you look at emily's face when the uncle was explaining that maybe katie was just playing dress-up you can see in her eyes how she put the pieces together in her head that there was something going on and that the uncle may have done something to katie
it's even more obvious when you watch the clip like you see the moment when it clicks for her but she couldn't say anything unless she had proof of it
and i have to admire paget's acting here too because she was just so good at the subtle changes with just her eyes and body language she was just too good in this ep this was HER ep
i still get chills thinking about the scene where she was getting the aunt to confess what she did to katie and goes "you have robbed katie of her childhood, are you going to steal the rest of her life from her as well?" with so much fury and passion my god she is excellent
#“emily prentiss carried seven seconds on her back” i yell and the crowd says “YEAH”#i like to call emily as one of the resident bau dumbasses but she is actually really REALLY smart#on top of that she graduated from yale and she can speak like idk six languages and can probably read/understand more than that#also i love how in early cm seasons they made it a point to show how she's the go-to in cases involving children#i wish in the next season they would bring back child advocacy and polyglot emily elizabeth prentiss#like we already know she's good at politics she was groomed to be good at it so can we see her as a specialised profiler again please#emily prentiss#criminal minds

After Rei is hospitalized, Endeavor realizes he needs someone to take care of Shouto. Also, the house needs cleaning. Fuyumi helps, but she can't drive or take Shouto to doctor's appointments or things like that. He especially wants someone who can drive to take care of him because he doesn't like the idea of people gawking at his scar on public transport and spreading gossip about what happened. So he decided to hire a nanny.
Meanwhile, Midoriya Hisashi has stopped sending money to his family. Inko wants a divorce, but he won't return to Japan, so it's a drawn-out legal process for the separation to happen, and the lawyer fees are costing money. Even once they're separated, she knows Hisashi won't pay child support. As long as he stays in America, it'll be next to impossible to hold him accountable. She needs money, so when she hears the Endeavor Agency is hiring, she applies, fully expecting not to get it. She does.
Option A: She can now afford her apartment, and she drives to work every day in time to take Shouto to school. However, Izuku has come home a few times now with burns. He lies and says there's a disgruntled salaryman on the train that singes people with his fire quirk when they don't give up their spot. Concerned, she starts driving him to school. This is easy because his school is on the way to Shouto's private school. The boys just have to ride together. For nine years, Shouto and Izuku share twenty-minutes a day together in the back of Inko's car, driving to and from school. They become hesitant friends, and by UA are both in love and both just as certain it's unrequited.
Option B: Endeavor wants a 24/7 nanny. If Inko agrees to move in, he'll allow her to bring her son with her. They'll even both get their own room, and he'll pay for their food, provided Inko does the shopping and cooking. And thus, Izuku finds himself living with Shouto when they're both six. They become hesitant friends, and by UA are both in love and both just as certain it's unrequited.
#i think falling in love in the backseat of your mom's car is the funnier option lmaooo#how would i even write that?#their interactions would be so fleeting#probably trading novels to read or something#ugh it would be soooo good for shouto#but he's fresh off the trauma train#inko and izuki probably think he's mute at first#what it izuku learned sign language?? lmaoooo#he becomes conversant and then tries to speak to Shouto only to find out he can talk and doesn't know shit about sign language lololol#ahh but wouldn't shouto be touched by the effort?#living together has tons of potential too of course#especially if they're /supposed/ to stay apart#sort of a 'don't mingle with the help' attitude from endeavor#tododeku#tddk#todoroki x midoriya#shouto x izuku#todoizu#todoroki x deku#bnha#tddk au#tdiz#skyll rambles

"I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn’t make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet."
– The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
