Agency Assignments: A comprehensive to-do list for saving Dead Boy Detectives!

I'm very easily overwhelmed, so I wanted to break down all the ways to help "Save Dead Boy Detectives" that I have seen floating around. This is meant to be something you can reference when you feel like there is so much you need and want to do to help, but don't know how or where to start.

Sign the petition*

Review & Rate Dead Boy Detectives on Google, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes. Be sure on IMDB you don't just rate the show as a whole, but you also rate each individual episode! You can also "Like" the show on Google and click "Watched" which helps the show's engagement scores. (If there are other popular sites I haven't listed here, feel free to share them and rate Dead Boy Detectives highly on them!)

Notify Netflix customer service (through their online chat feature) that you're unhappy with the cancelation of Dead Boy Detectives. This is a short, 5-minute task that I wrote a guide on (with an example message) here!

"Repeat" Tasks:

Talk about Dead Boy Detectives!* You're probably doing that already, but just be sure that you're tagging your posts. Here on Tumblr use the "Dead Boy Detectives" tag at least (to boost our tag to trending) and anywhere that uses hashtags (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram for example) I would recommend #SaveDeadBoyDetectives and #DeadBoyDetectives as those seem to be the most commonly used tags! IMPORTANT: do not use more than 20 tags here on Tumblr! Any more than 20 and your posts might be marked as spam and hidden from the tags!

Create art, edits for TikTok, fics, gif sets, doodles, crafts, analysis posts, and so on for Dead Boy Detectives.* Having fun is important, too! This is an extension of the "Talk about Dead Boy Detectives" point, but it needs to be stated - don't remove the joy from the fight. If a drawing of our boys or a smutty fic with your favorite trickster cat king is what you can bring to the fight on any given day, that is a perfectly valuable contribution! It's not all emails and hashtags.

Daily request a show through Netflix. Bonus if you're signed in! (I do 3-5 times a day)

Send Emails advocating for Dead Boy Detectives (Email list & Email Template). You can do this as much as you want or just one time.

Send Snail-mail (physical letters) to Netflix advocating for Dead Boy Detectives. I also send a copy of my letters to Warner Bros. Studios. Again, you can do this one time or multiple times. There are dates set aside for "mass" mail sending as well, so check out info on that here!

Interact with articles posted about Dead Boy Detectives. Read them, share them, comment on them, thank the writer for writing them, etc. We want lots of press about the cancellation, and supporting journalists and publications will make them want to write about Dead Boy Detectives more.

Keys guide to scam spotting (v2)

Hi! I’m Key (Or Jess depending on which blog you know me from) and I’ll be telling you some better information and detail on how to spot a scam account be it a pet scam or a donation scam. All information is based on my own experiences and I’ll try to keep this post accessible so the only big text is the title. This information should help in understanding how these scams work and how to spot them without having to do too much work. As always, if you appreciate what I do and want to show it, sharing these info posts helps other users see it and learn about blogs that might send them asks.

What is a donation scam? - A donation scam is when someone is being deceptive to get money by claiming they need mutual aid or support. For example, they are using the story from someone else’s fundraising post in order to get donations and won’t tell anyone their lying. This is called a donation scam. While the story may be legitimate, it is a story stolen off someone else and means the real person isn’t getting the support they asked for because someone else is using it. These stories are often stolen off Facebook/GoFundMe or even Instagram and could come from a private account or group so searching wouldn’t come up with a source. The images may also be stolen from somewhere else too.

How do you spot a donation scam? - Donation scams are usually easily spotted if you take a closer look at the information being given. Stolen stories will often have certain parts removed and replaced with the information the scammer added themselves. Sometimes the post may be composed of two different parts and won’t sound right if you pay close attention. For example, part of the story sounds fine but then the second part of the story seems out of place and doesn’t match up with the beginning. Another thing to check is how old the account is and if you have timestamps on you can see if an older post is backdated. You can also check to see if the account has tagged certain blogs in their post though this isn’t always a sign of a scam.

What is post backdating? - Post backdating is changing the dates of a reblogged post to look older then it really is. While this can be used with good intentions, scammers often use this to trick people into thinking their account is years old or even a few months old. The one way to find this is by turning on timestamps in dashboard settings and checking ‘other notes’ in reblogs. This is the only way to see the true date something was shared. Accounts who backdate posts will often claim someone told them to do it or they’ll say they didn’t know it was bad. However, you can not accidentally backdate a post.

Did the account contact you first? - A common occurrence is that you will get scam asks if you share a popular or trending post. Usually these accounts send asks to anyone they find without care of who it is and might lie as well if you ask them how they found you. In general, a brand new account shouldn’t easily find you unless they were watching the notes of popular posts. Occasionally these new accounts will even send asks to certain accounts they shouldn’t know about unless they have seen the account before. If your DMs are closed, the ask may ask you to message them because it’s urgent but all they will do is ask for money or ask you to loan them some money.

What is a pet donation scam? - A pet donation scam is where someone has went and looked around for vet fundraisers online and then took it for themselves by saving the images and story while erasing any links that would lead to the real pet getting support. They will then repost it to tumblr and say it’s actually their pet needing urgent care with the post title being very large and in red text for a sense of urgency. Sometimes they’ll say they can’t use GoFundMe because it has a fee or something else. This is a scam because they are not the owner of the pet and have stolen everything meaning no funds sent will be towards the actual pets care.

How do you spot a pet donation scam? - A common way of a pet donation scam is by how old the pinned post is and how many posts are reblogged on the account. Usually there is only a few posts shared and always shared around the same time and then no more. These posts all come from a trending topic, a fandom, or are popular posts. Another thing is checking the bio in Google search and seeing if it’s been took from someone else as the scammer never makes their own bio. Reverse image search their pfp to see who it really belongs to in case they stole it. Another important thing is to check their link and see if it matches up with the vet bill. Since most pictures are stolen off a private group, reverse image search won’t find them. The name they may have is likely not their real name and is stolen.

Did the account send you an ask? - Regardless of what the ask says, it usually requests you to answer it privately or message them so they can tell you thanks. These asks may have several emojis in them as well but their always just copy/pasted and sent to multiple users all at once on a daily basis. The private answer is so the ask won’t show up if someone is looking it up. If their post is public, there shouldn’t be a reason to need a private response to an ask you have sent to many people unless you are trying to hide it. Messaging these accounts is useless because they’ll lie to you when you ask them questions back or just ignore you.

What is a fake check scam? - A fake check scam is when a generally blank account with no pfp will message you after you used certain tags and ask you if you still need help. Even if you have links to send support, these accounts will ignore that in order to ask for your personal information such as phone number or banking details. They will then offer to send you a check. This is a fake check and cashing it won’t be scamming the scammer. You will lose money instead and the scammer will already move on to someone else. Never give them your private information.

Are there any other scam types? - When you tag posts, you’ll often get messages from accounts claiming they can help you get more attention on your campaign but you have to pay them money or go off-site to contact them. These are fake support accounts and they always use stock images while pretending to be officially affiliated and act like their Digital Marketing title means their not trying to scam you. They get defensive when called out and may start insulting you when they figure out you are already aware they aren’t legitimate.

What is a funeral donation scam? - A funeral donation scam is when an account posts saying someone has passed away but the images they used are actually took from someone else and may be photoshopped. Bills may be edited to suit their story and names may be changed to someone else’s. This isn’t a real common scam! But it’s happened a lot lately but the basics are the account will steal someone’s pictures and pass them off as theirs and when caught will say they were forced to or know it’s wrong but did it anyway.

In closing, this is information regarding common scam types you’ll find on tumblr. It’s always suggested to pay close attention to asks you get it they fit the criteria of being sent from a scammer. Answer the asks publicly and call out the blog. The scammer may block you as a result, but it’ll help your ask be seen it someone has looked it up. I suggest never spamming asks to share your pinned aid post because unfortunately scammers do this and you shouldn’t ignore people saying to please stop spamming. Always check to see if someone is comfortable getting these kinds of asks too because it won’t look too good if you have sent them an ask when they say please don’t.

As always, not everyone asking for support is a scammer! Legitimate people are out there. It’s just unfortunate scammers have made it harder for them to get help. You can always do your own research and compare it to what others have given and come to your own conclusion.

Jill vs. the Coveretts: A Timeline of Events

While there have been vagueposts on both sides prior to Tim + Heidi's wedding, and Hallie has been pretty open about her opinions on Jill, I'm going to focus on the social media back and forth around Tim's wedding.

As far as I can tell it starts here, with Jill posting about the wedding.

She says that pics will follow once Tim + Heidi give the go-ahead. At first, that seems like a huge step forward for Jill and Tim. A boundary set by one of her children that Jill respects? Even though it could deny her social media engagement and the opportunity to talk about marriage? HUGE. Big if true.

... It was (probably) not true. Also at the wedding, Jill takes some pictures of of Samuel + Brianne. More on that later.

Within a couple of days, Jill broadcasts to the world about Tim + Heidi's purity with some (unflattering) video and images from the wedding. It is unclear if she actually got that approval from the bride and groom, or if she couldn't resist posting about the wedding. If they did approve of her posting, it's unlikely that they approved of the whole "purity" thing, given Heidi's family's reaction.

"We are so thankful that Timothy and Heidi chose purity in their relationship. It brings God great glory!"

Ellen and Hallie Coverett have Thoughts about Jill's post. Ellen says "Some things can be left private and don't need to be plastered all over facebook. Especially if it's about someone else. Private decisions between a husband and wife is not the world's business. JS We need to stop making preferences, commandments. Stop making others feel bad or dirty for having a different opinion.""

Heidi's grandmother weighs in with "TMI. This should be left private."

At this point, Jill could remove the video per Heidi's family's requests. She could apologize for crossing a boundary. She could even do nothing, which might be better than what she chose to do. . . The Double Down.

David also posts in her defense. I'm not including the full things because I'd probably hit my limit of images that I'm allowed in a single post.

Hallie (Coverett) Judge is done with Jill's shit.

Several Rods come to Jill's defense, however.

Nurie writes about her own experience saving her first kiss for the wedding. It's giving "well I never wore a seatbelt growing up and I turned out just fine, what are YOU so worked up about?" (Guess who just remembered Nurie's track record with seatbelts. . .) It's like that weird aunt who says at family reunions "my mother commented on my weight all the time and I turned out fine, so I don't understand why you're making a big deal out of all this."

Jonathan and Kaylee chime in. They're a little more subtle than Nurie in their support for Jill, but they're still pro "save the first kiss for the altar, and then tell everyone about it."

And then Timothy finally gets involved. He starts by untagging himself from his mother's FB post. Jill appears to then edit his name out of her post to hide the fact that he was originally tagged there.

Tim posts on Facebook thanking everyone for the well wishes. He includes a scripture that commands men to "leave his father and mother and be joined unto his wife." Often shortened to "leave and cleave," this verse is typically used in Christian circles to, among other things, emphasize the importance of growing up and establishing your own family separate from your parents'. While a secular person might say "cut the cord" in response to an overbearing MIL, a conservative Christian might say "leave and cleave."

Renee writes a poem and posts it to Jill's FB (allegedly, I'm still not convinced that anyone but Jill ever writes for her socials). The poem is quite long and all about how important it is to listen to your mother, how your mother's love is there to protect you. Some highlights:

"As the toddler reaches for an object on the shelf, / Not knowing that it may bring harm or danger to herself, / Her mother quickly scolds her as she leads the babe away."

"In each mistake or wilful [sic] sin and choice to disobey, / Her mama still is standing near, to guide, correct, and pray."

"The soul inside her daughters [sic] heart is far too great a price, / To keep from saying something, for the sake of being 'nice'."

As poetry goes, it's pretty mediocre. Maybe someday I'll do a full analysis of Rodlet poetry, but for the time being, just know that it's what you'd expect. A singsong meter, AABB rhyme, fairly juvenile language.

I think Brianne is the last to jump in on all this. She is in full support of Jill. If there were any question as to how well Brianne will fit with this family--not anymore.

We have another vaguepost from Ellen Coverett about the ways our children grow up and grow away from us.

Update! On October 3 (he asked me what day it was I'm sorry I can't help myself), Jill posts pictures she took of Samuel + Brianne for their "official courtship photoshoot."

Eagle-eyed viewers may notice that Samuel is in his wedding attire.

This photoshoot was done AT the wedding.

Brianne went to this wedding with her princess dress presumably stowed in the car, took the time to change (during the reception, I guess?), and had a whole photoshoot with Samuel while they were there to celebrate and support Timothy + Heidi.

AND THEN JILL TAGS IT #RESPECTFULTOPARENTS.

Ok, Jill. We get it. You have a favorite, and it's the gal who won't set boundaries with you.

Miscellaneous

I wasn't sure where to put these in the timeline, but I think it's worth noting that Jill seems to pick out the photos that are specifically the most unflattering to Heidi.

Heidi's eyes are closed! And Jill is stepping on her dress! (The labels for the in-laws, the arrow pointing to Newman(?), the photoshopped Phil--there's so much going on.)

Also, Jill posts about the mocktail bar at the wedding, and Hallie reveals that not everyone was drinking mocktails that evening.

What Now?

As far as we can tell, there is no great schism in the Rod family. Ellen Coverett is still in Jill's downline, still selling Plexus and touting its benefits.

I hope Tim continues to set boundaries and establish distance from his mom. I hope he and Heidi are enjoying married life and not getting bogged down in social media nonsense. I hope he finds a healthier example of what a family can look like in the Coveretts. I hope he continues to grow.

(And yeah, it's so cathartic to see Hallie call Jill out on her BS.)

The spike/stud dilemma

one of the biggest issues i've noticed is "where do I find studs/spikes without fast fashion??" which is totally fair. something like that shouldn't have to be a minefield. obviously if you buy from a small business that re-sells them from aliexpress you're still indirectly supporting aliexpress.

im sure there ARE slow fashion alternatives and if anyone knows some please let me know so I can add it!!

BUT here's what I'd recommend.

-goodwill bins, sometimes they have old clothes or broken belts, very rare though. also any thrift store or reclaimed craft store.

-Local businesses, sex shops

-metal paper fasteners

-borrowing. it's inevitable, I know. JOANNs is definitely the best selection imo, but Hobby Lobby is better to steal from. Because They are Terrible. Michael's is OK but less selection usually. They use peal off tags usually which are easy to remove.

-also if you're feeling extra insane, hot topic uses mainly ink tags, which can be removed with heat (look up tutorials on) or just cut off a stud/spike belt. their studs are pretty easy to remove. same with bracelets, they break a lot. ofc it depends on the place whether they use beep beep tags.

-ask people for broken shit!

TEXTILES (the easy part)

-fabric samples are easy to find for free online. get whatever colors you want, i usually stick to black, white, grey and 1-3 other colors. they're usually pretty small so order around until you find the right size. you want cotton and linen, usually upholstery if you're painting on them. if you're not or you're ok working with leather, leather is easy to find too. A lot of companies mentioned how stretchy your material is something not stretchy most cases.

-FACEBOOK!! A.K.A the boomer method. This is where I got almost all of mine!! I recommend downloading FREEBIE as well! I got mine thru that, it links to facebook, nextdoor, and so on. Ofc you can pay for them- but you don't have to! I have lifetime supply of textiles basically bc of this. A lot of people get them for hobbies or work.

-the goodwill bins!!!! you can absolutely find fabric there, it's pretty common actually

-you don't need to steal this tbh it's easy to find second hand and less wasteful

PAINTING

-Facebook, goodwill, or reclaimed/used craft stores if you have them

-borrowing (same places)

-use something like Painter Eye (AR tracing app) and draw out any complex band logos etc.

-you can also use sharpies or whatever nobody's stopping you

Other stuff

-one of the best ways to find stuff is just GO FOR A WALK! Find little shiny objects!

-hardware stores are good so are army surplus

You know how I love before & after pics. Well, look at this, remember when I posted the Henry Ford pagoda house in Grosse Ile, Michigan? It was so depressing, outdated and creepy? Shellydanger just submitted it and I noticed that it had a redo. Basically, they repainted, lightened and cleared out the rooms. It was also $989,900 and now it's been lowered to $799,999. Check it out, now.

The kitchen had great retro cabinetry and tiles.

Glad they didn't change the retro look, but it still looks like a very commercial kitchen.

The primary bedroom was dark.

They emptied it out and lightened it up.

How did the current owners keep it so dark?

Look at how different the color of the purple bath looks now.

A secondary bedroom.

Pared down and brightened.

The other lovely retro bath.

Basically it just looks like they just turned on all the lights.

The basement stairs and floor got some new paint.

They fixed up this room, but it doesn't look like they did anything with the bar.

The boat slip looks better straightened up and letting the light in.

This isn't shown on the real estate ads, but it was on the house's Facebook page- the lower level wine cellar got spectacular uplighting.

Redoing the exterior.

Except, instead of a social situation, can it be a scary doctor appointment? I recently had to go to the doctor to get a mysterious lump checked out, and I was terrified. I wanted someone to be there with me so badly, but alas, I am a single pringle.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in the middle of covid when I was living in Europe, she had to tell me over facebook messenger, and I broke down and cried for like 15 minutes after I got off the phone with her. So this one's a little short, because it hits a little too close to home, sorry.

“You need to relax, cyare.” Fives says quietly, as he tugs you against his side, and pulls your head to his shoulder, “You’re spiraling, lovely.”

“I know, I know.” You nervously twist you comm between your fingers, over and over again, “Fives, what if-”

“Hey, hey. No.” He lightly taps your chin with one finger, and you turn to look up at him, “We’re not doing any what-ifs, cyare.”

“But-”

“No buts,” He smiles soothingly and lightly tugs on a strand of your hair., “There is no point in wondering what-ifs when we haven’t even spoken to your doctor yet.”

You worry your lower lip, and Fives sighs and rubs his thumb across your lip, to stop you, “I know you’re worried, love.” He says softly, “But you’re just going to make yourself sick if you don’t relax, just a little.”

His hand moves to cup your cheek, and you close your eyes and lean into his touch. And for a moment, you’re able to forget that you’re sitting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office. 

“There we go,” Fives’ voice is low and soothing, “I’m here, cyare. And I’m not going anywhere.”

“Even if it’s bad news?” You ask, your voice slightly shaky. 

“Especially then.” He continues lightly smoothing his thumb across your cheek, “Will you look at me, cyare?”

You open your eyes and look up at him. His smile is warm and soft and so very loving, that for a moment you want to cry. 

“I love you,” Fives whispers, as though his words are for you and you alone.

You sniffle, “I love you too.” You rub your eyes roughly, trying to force the moisture away, “I’m just scared.”

“I know, cyare. But I’m not going anywhere. I’ll be right there next to you, regardless of what the doctor says.” Fives promises.

A shaky smile crosses your face, “I don’t deserve you,” You whisper, as you reach up and cup his face.

“Tough, because I chose you, and I’m going to keep choosing you.” Fives leans in and chastely kisses your nose, “Besides, you were right there with me when I got my chip removed, how could I offer you anything less than what you gave me?”

“That was different-” You say quietly.

“Not to me.” He kisses your cheek and then your temple, “And when we get out of here, I’ll buy you an ice cream.”

You lean heavily against him, “Can we get lunch instead? We can make a day out of it.”

“Mm. That sounds fun.” Fives agrees as he brushes some of your hair out of your face, “We can hit up that cafe you like so much.”

“The one with the fancy bread?”

“That’s the one,” He replies with a small smile.

You tilt your head, “And then we can get ice cream?” You ask hopefully.

He laughs, “Yes, you spoiled thing, then we can get ice cream.” He leans in and kisses you gently, and you sigh into the kiss. Though, when your name is called by the nurse, you tense again. 

Fives takes your hand, and squeezes your fingers, “Come on, cyare. Let’s get this over with, hm?”

You look up at him, and nod slowly. “Yeah. Okay.” Yet let him pull you to your feet, and you smile up at him as he kisses your joined fingers. “You’re staying, right?” You ask, just to make sure.

“Oh, cyare. Count Dooku himself couldn’t make me leave.” Fives promises with a sharp grin. And all of the tension drains from your body once more. If Fives says so, than it’s true, as simple as that.

Stuff that I think would be kinda neat for this website

Disclaimer: I'm writing this for fun, mostly for myself, and I acknowledge that it's pretty unlikely that any of these will be implemented. Especially now that it seems like the website is gonna die soon.

New features:

Community Notes. Don't let misinformation spread just because the version of a post being reblogged is the one where nobody called out OP.

User Notes. Allows users to write notes on each other's profiles, only optionally visible to the user the note is about. Importantly only two people can ever see those notes: the person who wrote them, and the person whose profile it's on.

Shield. Lets you see someone's posts and comments regularly, but all interaction from them is blocked, and vice versa.

Speed Block. Automatically blocks someone who uses a specific tag (would require fixing the tagging system, see below).

Drafts Reset. When activated, deletes everything in your drafts that's been there for more than a set number of days.

It’s been a rough week excluding the state of world - not an excuse just relevant.

I spent a good 4-6 hours over the course over ~2 days writing and deleting and rewriting that ask.

I honestly and sincerely apologize for the distress it caused, it’s was a just stupid post and I couldn’t let it go. I should have.

Which is partly why I reacted the way I did, it was very unexpected. I did unfollow, am a little younger but been on this hellsite long enough to know the drill (and likewise to know better than send an anon as such at all).

I remember the tag on it had the word queue in it if that helps you locate it, provided you want to. You owe me nothing, the idea behind it was if you didn’t mean it like that you’d at least understand why someone would say that. And if you did mean it like that, comeuppance.

Thus why such anons are no no’s.

To reaffirm, I apologize for any and all distress, provided sincerity. It was beyond annoying and presumptuous of me, and it clearly affected you too. Truly i deeply apologize for that. I felt it was justified at the time, due to the effect it had on me in my current condition. Had I received such an anon I would’ve been in state, triggered to say the least.

There was no distress on my end, just pure, deep confusion. Still is. I did ultimately find that post, but there was nothing rapey about it. As you stated, it was basically an indirect way of asking people if anyone following me had a crush on me and giving them "permission"/a playful excuse to come forward about it if they'd been shy about it. It was entirely tongue-in-cheek and I didn't expect any actual responses about it because I only have ~2000 followers on here and most of them have not been active in a few years, but many of them have been mutuals for close to a decade, or even longer. I apologize if seeing a hypnosis spiral is triggering to you, but 1. I had no way of knowing that, and 2. As you've stated, you've been on tumblr long enough to know how to avoid posts that are triggering to you. Which, admittedly, would be easier if the post was tagged as such, and I take responsibility for not tagging it, but I genuinely didn't realize it would be necessary as it was not used in that kind of context AT ALL. And as a friendly reminder, hypnosis is NOT used exclusively for "rape hypnosis" like you claimed. In point of fact it's used in therapeutic medical contexts moreso than kink ones, and it's used in non-sexual contexts in many types of fiction including children's media (there was a villain in Teen Titans whose whole schtick was hypnosis, for example). So the fact that you saw that and went directly beyond the context it was presented in and straight to accusing me of being pro-sexual assault is absolutely fucking buck-wild. Especially as a victim of SA myself. I'm sorry that my post triggered you and that you experienced that flood of emotions as a result; I do in fact know how that feels. But you don't get to come into my inbox, on anon like a fucking coward, and accuse me of shit that's not even remotely accurate. If you had even just messaged me off anon about it (like I asked you to do in my initial response), we could have had a PRIVATE conversation about it that didn't require me to broadcast your baseless accusations to my entire feed, and we could have come to an understanding much sooner that involved me tagging and/or removing the post as seemed fitting. There is no algorithmic feed on tumblr. (well, technically there is, but no one who's been on here longer than a month actually uses it because it's garbage, so we collectively pretend it doesn't exist.) You are the curator of your own online experience, in general but ESPECIALLY on tumblr. Content that you do not like or that you find harmful is not going to be pushed on you. If you follow people that post that kind of content regularly, that's on you. I don't post that kind of content regularly, so I'm sure it was an unexpected and uncomfortable surprise for you to be triggered by something on my blog. But again, you have MULTIPLE options on how to deal with that: you can reach out PRIVATELY, OFF ANON, and have a civilized conversation about it, if it's someone you want to continue following or it was a post that slipped through the tag filters because it was untagged, etc; you can choose to unfollow or even block them, WITHOUT flouncing about it, if it's that much of a dealbreaker for you; or, you can send an inflammatory ask on anon to stir up drama, like the tumblr equivalent of a Karen. Two of these options are respectful of other people, and take accountability for your own online experience; one of them makes it the other person's fault and does not give them any opportunity to rectify the situation respectfully. Guess which option you chose?? My sibling in Christ I hope you are able to get the help that you need to cope with your trauma and not project your experiences onto other people that had nothing to do with them. Take care.

Just touching base with some information.

So I know this isn't going to be a pretty post or a fun post because I won't be showing off my belly here. But this one is going to be incredibly important for you guys to reads. After what happened with TikTok, I made the decision to get rid of Instagram and Twitter. I am, and will, be protesting their existence by refusing to log onto those sites and showing what the free market is about. What I am gettingat is if you see ANYONE that is attempting to contact you with my names Olianu, Olianurabbit, Olianuchonk, or something of similar, THERE IS A VERY HIGH CHANCE THAT IT IS NOT ME! DO NOT ENGAGE, DO NOT TALK TO THEM, ASSUME IT IS A BOT!!! There was a political stunt that TikTok did on the last two days of Biden's time in office where they tried to paint him as the villain that was trying to destroy TikTok. This isn't 100% true because the ban was first proposed in 2020 by the Orange Glad Bag (use context clues, I will never say his name.) He, along with his republican lackeys have pushed against this for the better part of five years and as always, their mess was put on a democrat's shoulders. It also came to light that millions of dollars was poured into this ban by Zuckerberg to try and force people to use his products. I will not be using those platforms and I will be moving to here and other platforms I feel might be more secure. I don't expectanyone to follow in my footsteps, however, if you decide to that would be awesome. How to do this? 1) Remove the platforms from your phones and devices. Instagram, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Twitter (or X), Delete your accounts. Move other to other platforms away from them. 2) Anyone that tries to spew their pro right wing nonsense, block. No engaging, no trying to argue with them. Block them out. 3) Spread the word and try to tell your people try to explain to poeple why this is important and why we MUST be the resistance.

25 Vinyl Records That Influenced My Vinyl Collecting Habits.

‘Top ten’ lists - they were so commonplace on social media before the pandemic that half of the people you knew participated in them. Your friends involuntarily posted lists of their top ten favorite albums, songs, movies, sports moments, video games, books, or whatever came to mind. Then they’d nominate you to do the same if you even cared. All of a sudden they stopped and for a few months everyone did tournament brackets. These days no one does either. Now, tag a band and see if they acknowledge you exist, solve a simple math problem where everyone with a Facebook diploma in mathematics are out to prove you wrong, or answer some useless questions to find out what your new gang initiation name is by removing your first and last letter and any surviving vowels.

But I don’t care about childish entry-level entertainment that everyone will forget about five minutes later. I’d watch Fox News for that. Longtime Ω+ followers know our ‘top tens’ are much more than that: they are playlists, mixtapes, end-of-year finds, and best-of decade results. That’s what I’m into. I’m into what’s important and that’s identifying with people. It’s not a contest or a be-all-end-all game of right-or-wrong. It’s all fully subjective. Without personal results, how special or unique would these lists be?

The last survey I was nominated to do was from WUSB’s Mister Edison, the station’s only cylinder aficionado in its’ 45-year history: top ten vinyl records that influenced your collecting habits. I did volunteer to do it and I was halfway there, then somehow along the way I deleted it. Now, here it is. But, instead of a top ten, we’ll do a top twenty-five because I’m compulsive and 10 is not a square number. All records shown here regardless of size, speed, color, or print run are those that have changed not only my record-collecting habits but also have shaped my musical tastes to an extent.

The record that started it all? KMFDM’s “Power” 12”. It was the very first vinyl record I bought with my own money, just mere months after purchasing most of its discography in one shot at my local record store. I ordered it from the TVT / Wax Trax mail order - my very first mail-order to be exact - numbered to 3,000 copies as a single-sided etched vinyl record in a clear plastic silk-screened jacket. That also came with Underworld’s “Rowla”. Shizuo’s High On Emotion e.p. was my third. Found at what was Port Jefferson’s Music Den, that’s a record I had to have at first sight because I knew it was extremely rare. Glad I made the right call because I never saw it again. Even though I didn’t have a turntable, I bought them anyway thinking I could hold on to them until I finally got my hands on one. Turned out my ma’ and dad had one: a wooden box smaller than the records it played. It literally had no sound and was deemed almost unplayable, so a close “friend” of mine gave me his father’s 1972 Panasonic and a copy of Autechre’s We Are R Y 12”. I was now in business.

From there, another one-time pressing of theirs, the “Keynell” e.p., introduced me to the panic of now-or-never buying. Booth & Brown collectors know how insanely rare their limited edition e.p.’s are and also how they and Warp divided up their Cichlisuite and Envane e.p.’s in two parts. And that was nothing to when Aphex Twin released not one, not two, but eleven e.p.’s as the Analord series through his Rephlex label. Ten regular platters and two versions of Analord 10: either you got the Aphex logo picture disc or, if you were really lucky (we mean that in a literal sense), one that came with the Analord binder which is fetching impossible prices right now. Some of them even came with the mythical Analogue Bubblebath 5. We’re just happy to have purchased all eleven editions for regular price when they first came out. Amazingly in that same year, I did my first-ever label run and purchased $300.00 worth of vinyl and disc releases from DHR.

The first hardcore record I got my hands on - Kill Your Idols’ This Is Just The Beginning - was also the very first music purchase I made at any show. Three years after one of my close friends introduced me to Sick Of It All and hardcore / punk in general, This Is Just The Beginning flung the doors wide open for crushing similar-styled tough-guy finds. Most Long Island record stores sold them when they came in, and places like Hicksville and Centereach’s Utopia (when they did sell them) offered many easy one / two / three-dollar bargain bin purchases of many 7” records, 45’s, and 12” LPS. The Howards & Checkerboard Charlie split is one example of that and one of many local acts I possess. Jemini The Gifted One’s “Funk Soul Sensation” is the only hip-hop record on the list. Ten years ago I re-discovered golden-era hip-hop and realized there was a treasure trove of white-label and 12” singles I never heard of from that time. Those hip-hop / rap singles can be found on the cheap in the same manner as those discount hardcore records. I’ll be on a life-time hunt for them as at this point I don’t have enough of them.

It’s no surprise to see that more than half of this list is made up of Seventies’ jazz / fusion records. If not for Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes Astral Traveling, I would not have the size of vinyl library I have now. One of our former hip-hop dee-jays at the station played “Expansions”, “Aspirations”, and “Colors Of The Rainbow” and those three cuts literally changed my life. It opened up an avenue for me to re-discover who I was and revisit a certain era of time I missed out on. From that point on, it was all about that era’s sounds, sampling, and personal favorites. John Tropea’s A Short Trip To Space, Les McCann’s Music Lets Me Be, and Roy Ayers’ A Tear To A Smile - those three records define my final years at Stony Brook. Phil Upchurch’s 1979 solo outing, Stuff’s self-titled debut, Emily Remler’s Firefly, Steve Khan’s The Blue Man, Ramsey Lewis’ Tequila Mockingbird, Eric Gale’s Multiplication, and Ronnie Laws’ Pressure Sensitive tie me in and keep me connected to those years.

Karla Bonoff’s Restless Nights and Urbie Green’s The Fox influenced my collection in an amusing way. I had no idea who both artists were until I pulled them out of the bins. What had me purchase them? I bought Restless Nights and The Fox solely based on the year of release (1979 and 1976 respectively). One listen of each and I knew I made two right calls.

Remember when we posted our entry about our close friend Syke who rescued a pile of old records from being thrown out to the curb? Of the 500+ he found, he gave us 50 and we still have most of them. We selected Pete Shelley’s “Telephone Operator” as a reminder of that free giveaway.

I could list both volumes of the original Dirty Dancing motion picture soundtrack which my ma’ had, her only surviving childhood vinyl record of Disney’s Cinderella, or The Pac-Man Album 12″ picture disc written by Patrick McBride and Dana Walden. But those three mentions aren’t influential; just early Atari-youth memories. My first-ever childhood memories I still remember (not photographed) are also vinyl-related: J. Geils Band’s “Centerfold” and The Cars’ “Shake It Up”; the latter which I have in my possession and are the markers of all classic rock records I own around that era. (Think Dire Straits and Donald Fagan’s The Nightfly to name a few.)

Another Atari-youth moment I remember is The Chambers Brothers’ A New Time, A New Day. My dad cut out the album sleeve and used it as a paper holder in our garage. That very record made me think of whatever few platters I remember him having before he sold his entire vinyl library and our library of Atari 2600 games…for a paltry $50.00. “He needed the money” he told me; which is always a pathetic man’s answer to everything. Had he’d seen how enthusiastic I was into music collecting, he would’ve handed his entire collection to me. Roberta Flack’s Quiet Fire, Kiss’ Rock & Roll Over, and The Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers and Their Satanic Majesties Request were the four in his collection he parted with and I have three of them, not including The Chambers Brothers release. He tried to make it up to me, however, by bringing home two separate piles of records he rescued from the curb. One heap was full of polka records which I donated to WUSB’s resident polka lady before she died the same year. The other heap? Since you didn’t ask: loads of classic hippie rock records, showtunes, and celebrity albums. Jim Nabors on wax? Stop before I deactivate this account.

Finally, Boulders’ Rock & Roll Will Never Die. Look it up and you’ll see it’s a near total obscurity only confined to hipster circles who know what’s up. A five-track Wharf Records release picked up for less than $3.00 is the one 12" that may as well get me into the Discogs purchasing game for all rare releases (not found in stores) I’ve been looking for in the past seven years. I’ve played many of them on Omega WUSBand soon after bought a substantial chunk of their discographies in one shot (three Happy Meals / Free Love LP’s and three Black Marble discs, for example). As a nice side effect, it’ll be the the same for cassettes as well such as Believer/Law’s Matters Of Life And Death and JS Aurelius’ Machines Water The Plants Now - if the seller’s price is right, that is.

Notice how we went from KMFDM to Boulders? You can’t get any more disparate in styles and worlds between the two. The first purchases, public library finds, donations, record fairs, mail orders, samples, jazz-fusion and soul, hardcore and hip-hop buy-outs, record-store victory tours, and many other moments I might have missed…that’s 25 years of buying vinyl records spanning many different collecting eras and genres for me. That’s only one format, and also not counting acquiring music by other means such as radio and downloads which also shaped my collection. The bingo board jumble you see is only a tiny pinch of my musical tastes and not the whole story of my listening habits that’s usually broadcast on Omega WUSB or always posted here on Ω+.

After making this list, I’m reminded that I’m the most diverse person I know. I’m proud that my low-lying threshold for accepting and liking sound and concept allowed me to make that diversity into a science and have that mind-blowing knowledge I have of it. I’m as consistent, thorough, and far-reaching as I possibly can while hitting as many targets as possible. Would there be more bingo boards like this? Only if I make sure of it.

I started using tumblr to get away from using tiktok and here are my thoughts so far

Things I like

Less overstimulating content. This is a huge problem with tiktok since there's both audio and visual stimuli. Not even mentioning the duets and overlapping music meant to keep your brain captive. tumblr has mostly text posts which slows down the speed of absorbing content plus all videos begin muted anyway so I have to choose to listen to the auditry stimuli which made me realise that I often don't want/need to. This does mean I'm not able to use tumblr to distract myself as well but long term that is a good thing and I need to stop being dependent on consuming content to feel okay.

More detatched. People don't need to show their face/voice on tumblr, removing that anxiety I feel about putting myself online and also takes away a level of comparing myself to others. I also feel like text can remove a lot of barriers that video content has with language since it's much easier to translate static text than an entire video.

People letting themselves like things. I struggle with feeling bad about liking certain content since its "cringe" or "bad" but people on tumblr seem to be less worried about this and it's reassuring. Or at the very least people who don't like it seem less likely to be in the spaces complaining about how bad it is. Maybe I'm being nieve but it just seems nicer

I can sort of share things with my family. My dad doesn't have social media outside of facebook so when I try and send him a tiktok or a pintrest board, it's likely to not work. However, I can simply screenshot a post and send that to him and he'll be able to see, process and understand it much easier and faster than anything else.

Cons of tumblr

Negativity. It's a social media, I should have expected this but it still has a lot of negativity. I use social media as a coping mechanism to try and make myself feel better but sometimes that ends up making it worse. Granted, this isn't exclusively a tumblr problem but it's still something I've noticed. However I wish tumblr would stop showing me discourse I have no stake in. It just feels bad to see groups of people hating the others existence.

Interaction. I struggle with interacting with people on tumblr more than I did on tiktok. Mainly because comments on tiktok feel smaller and less obvious than reblogs which seem to be the main way of interacting with others. Maybe I'm just not fully understanding the culture of the platform yet but it does give me anxiety.

Algorithm. I feel like my tumblr for you often only has posts relating to one tag at a time and the not interested function doesn't seem to work as well for me as it does on tiktok. It also gives me random posts about things and then gives me more despite not interacting with them? Also I see the same posts show up a lot and it annoys me because I'm refreshing specicially to see new stuff.

Idk this was just my overall thoughts since I've been active here for a few months now.

There's a photo that exists that I had forgotten about. I blocked it from my memory for twelve years. And then in February, Facebook regurgitated it and threw it at me, and I have not been able to stop being angry about it.

I hate that fucking photo. I hate it because I am so clearly fucking uncomfortable, I look like I want to crawl out of my own skin, and I remember everyone laughing when it was taken. He never took no for an answer when it came from me. Never listened when I said stop. The photo is fucking proof. And I hate it because the person who took it saw so little wrong with what was happening, she not only took that photo while giggling up a storm, she posted it and tagged me in it.

I removed the tag. But the photo still exists.

And if I ask why she did it now, I'm "dredging up the past," and "why didn't you say anything back then?"

I DID!

But my discomfort was and is a joke to them. I am a joke. And when I begged for help to make him stop, because he actually respected the two of them enough to listen, I was told I needed to stop reacting to the harassment.

"He only does it to get a reaction from you. If you stop reacting, he'll leave you alone."

Because it was MY fault. Everything was always my fault. Is my fault.

And when we got home from that trip and I climbed into my shower and scrubbed my skin raw so that I could erase the memory, and then adamantly refused to hang out with him ever again, I was the asshole. I was breaking up the friend group. Again. Because when people hurt me, it doesn't matter. It's not important enough to bother anyone else.

"Well, he's never done anything like that to me."

Great. So fucking thrilled for you. But he did do it to me, and he's a vile little man, and I don't believe in Hell anymore, so I can't say I hope he goes there, but I can say I hope he fucking ROTS.

But that's not how anyone else saw it. I mean, clearly I deserved the harassment, right? Because I was too weak to stand up for myself? So why should anyone else, right? And how dare I ask for help, anyway! Don't I know that asking people to "white knight" for me is fucking insane?!

I'm tired. I haven't slept in like three days. I want to scream or cry or something, but no one wants to hear that, and even if they did, I don't want to inconvenience anyone.

So I'll swallow it until my next therapy session, where my therapist will AGAIN tell me I REALLY need to start talking to people in my life again, and stop bottling shit up, and I'll AGAIN tell him that it's not that fucking simple. That I used to try, that I spent years trying, and being made to feel like a fucking inconvenience for wanting to talk. That I was raised being told by both friends and family that I'm too sensitive and I need to get my emotions in check and grow up. That my tears brought someone I thought was my friend fucking JOY for a year, and that now I can't let myself cry even when I'm alone. That I'm aware that it's stunted me. That swallowing those emotions and pushing them down and remaining stone faced has kept me from actually learning how to process them. That I understand that the bottling them up and feeling suppressed and depressed and so fucking alone led me to drinking too much and making stupid fucking mistakes and becoming the most annoying person anyone has ever known. And that, fuck, according to 80% of the people I have ever cared about, I was already, at least, most of the way there, so that just made it worse. And that it's why I'm even more alone than I was before. And fuck, I was so alone before.

That I'm not worth the time it takes to read this post.

That I know these things. And I can't unknow them.

And I have tried really, really fucking hard to be better. I stopped drinking earlier this year, but now my sleep schedule is fucked and insomnia is awful, and that's made it worse and it's a really fucking annoying cycle that I can't break. And that when I try to explain this cycle to people, they look at me like I'm an idiot and tell me to just step out of it like I'm not in a fucking whirlpool that's pulling me down and slowly drowning me.

And that picture...that fucking picture still exists. And it's eating me alive.

And I want it gone. Burned. Destroyed. Erased from the internet. But I also want it printed, and stored somewhere secure where I don't have to look at it. Because it's proof. It's proof that when I say that even when I ask for help, I don't get it, that when I fucking BEG for someone to take my fucking side for once, it doesn't happen. It's proof that all the times I've been told I'm "overdramatic" and that if I just asked for help instead of "just expecting it," maybe someone would help me. It's PROOF that that was never the fucking case.

It's proof that I'm worth even less than I make myself out to be.

And the worst part is, if either of the two people who were laughing while it was taken had been in my shoes, in that situation, I would have killed him. I could have killed him.
