How to Start Composting at Home: A Beginnerâs Guide to Turning Waste into Wealth

Looking to reduce kitchen waste and help the planet? Learning how to start composting at home is a simple and rewarding step toward sustainable living. Whether you're in a small apartment or a home with a garden, composting food waste for beginners is easier than you might think.
First, understand what compost is â it's the nutrient-rich soil that forms when organic materials like vegetable peels, fruit scraps, coffee grounds, and dry leaves break down naturally. This dark, crumbly substance is often called âblack goldâ because of its incredible ability to enrich soil and help plants thrive.
Wondering how to compost at home? Start by setting up a bin or compost pile in your backyard, balcony, or even under your kitchen sink. Choose a compost bin that suits your space â from compact bokashi bins to outdoor tumblers. The key is to mix green materials (like food scraps) with brown materials (like dry leaves or cardboard) to balance moisture and carbon.
When learning how to make compost, remember to stir the mix regularly and keep it moist (like a wrung-out sponge). In a few weeks to months, you'll have rich compost ready to feed your plants or garden.
Knowing how to compost helps reduce landfill waste, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and gives you a free, natural fertilizer. It's a small change that makes a big impact.
If you're new to this, donât worry. Start with small steps, observe what works, and enjoy the process. With a bit of time and effort, composting food waste for beginners becomes a rewarding habit that contributes to a greener, cleaner world. Start today and turn your food waste into something wonderful!

What'll happen if I just...put my food scraps in a random container right now and gradually turn it into a more proper compost thing? How quickly will I need to do something else to it to have it become something vaguely useful?
Unnecessary info: I always hate throwing food scraps away, but today I had such a nice experience eating berries outside and when I walked around outside I actually felt positive feelings which hasn't happened really at all recently? So it felt so incorrect to walk away without at least returning the remnants to nature rather than chucking them in the trash. But I don't have the materials or executive function to do anything besides....Put It Somewhere. I thought about putting it in one of the random plants outside, but it feels questionable to just shove my food scraps in someone else's plants. Idk how you're choosing to raise your plants, idek if something bad could happen. Maybe the lemon tree, since it's already got lemons on the ground around it, but again, it's still Not Mine and very much Is Someone Else's. Whatever I end up doing, it'll probably need to be contained to a....container, and a pretty small (and definitely cheap) one at that, because I'm renting a room here, it's functionally Not My Yard, and the yard is 92% concrete. I'm just keeping the bowl of berry bits in my room at the moment until I figure out what to do đ
#composting#gardening#food waste#solarpunk#ecopunk#realistically I don't think the owners of this house would give a shit if i put a handful of berry parts near their lemon tree#so i think ill probably do that if i cant find another option#but this could be a good chance to finally start composting so i wanna see if the people of the internet can help me get past hard part no.1#any info is appreciated!#i saw a post about how composting can still be plenty effective without being ~optimized~ and that's the kind of thing im looking for#tyia!

Iâm approaching 27 which means that we are now in this unexpected period of life where we need to replace all of our âgood enough for nowâ things that we got super cheap (or free from family) when we first started living on our own. I am realizing that it is VERY difficult to get rid of things, not just from an emotional attachment standpoint but also:
âWell it technically DOES still work even if itâs unpleasant and falling apartâ (especially applicable to ugly/uncomfortable furniture)
âWe donât have to get rid of it, we can always repair itâ (it is literally broken and falling apart)
âWouldnât it be Bad and Consumeristic to just throw something away that isnât actually broken just because I want a new one?â (this one plagues me)
âGetting a New Thing would be way too expensiveâ (hasnât even checked the price of a replacement, I absolutely can afford it but it would cost more than $50)
Even when Iâve fought through those arguments (which is very hard to do considering these are things I learned while growing up during the 2008 recession and struggling financially due to severe illness and death in the family when I was young) and come out the other side determined to actually replace something, a new issue arises. âHow am I going to get rid of the old thing?â
âI canât donate this because itâs broken or stainedâ
âI want to sell this but this requires a lot of energy that I donât have (photographing the item, pricing the item, posting an ad for the item, sorting through offers for the item, arranging pickup for the item, possibly even shipping the item)â
âI want to throw this away but itâs too large to put in the garbage so it must go on the curb and I donât know the protocol for thatâ
âI want to throw this away but itâs too large to put in the garbage and too broken to give away so it must go to the dump and I donât have a vehicle I can use to take this there so I will need to reach out to family for helpâ
âI want to throw this away but Iâm not sure how to do so in an Environmentally Friendly wayâ
This sort of situation is a nightmare for my mentally ill mind, and it results in me simply giving up and putting up with keeping the shitty item I know I want to replace and repeating the same excuses to myself to justify it enough that I donât break down in frustrated tears every time I look at the thing Iâve been wanting to get rid of for months.
Iâm sick of it though. I am tired of having to put up with being stuck with something I donât like just because itâs not âbad enoughâ to justify going through the stress of removing from my life. I am tired of living with these things that I want to get rid of taking up the space I want to give to something new that I do love that I picked out myself on purpose. I am tired of my own happiness not being a good enough reason to justify doing something difficult or inconvenient. I am approaching 30. I donât want to live the next decade of my life like Iâve lived the first two, just dealing with whatâs been given to me and not saying no, incapable of removing things I donât like to make space for things I do.
#talk#this started as a vent about my couch and my lawnmower and my deck furniture and my car#ended a lot more metaphorical and emotional than expected#but. yeah.#I want my life to be something I chose on purpose#not just whatever Iâve been given#I think I deserve better than that#but also for real why is it so fucking hard to just throw something away!!!#IMO this is partly an infrastructure issue specifically when it comes to things I donât know HOW to throw away#also there should be more trash categories#Iâm sick of things I canât recycle being tossed in a landfill when they could be composted#but I live in a second story apartment so I canât compost it myself#also there are many things that I canât recycle but also SHOULD NOT go in a landfill#thatâs one of those things that stresses me out a lot#environmentalism is important to me#wish it was more accessible#ALSO!!!!#what do I do with old potting soil thatâs lost nutrients? do I just fertilize the soil in a pot if a plant is doing poorly because itâs been#in the same pot for 4 years#??#do I just NOT replace the soil?#I think i do need to replace the soil but what do I do with the old stuff????#again. second story apartment. so I canât just put it in the yard.#also even if I could I donât know if I should!! what if I spread diseases or bacteria or invasive plants!!!#do I toss it in the woods nearby? same issue as before!!!!#do I! once again!! just put up with keeping this old dirt!!!!!!!!!#I donât want to be burdened by a giant tub of old fucking dirt of all things!!!!!!!#WHY IS IT SO HAAAARD#I DONT WANNA BE A HOARDERRRR

i just spent the entire money i got from someone buying my drawing (!!) on products that have names like "ultra UBER gentle soft gentle cleansing cleanser for your weaky little baby skin idiot" and "infant baby SENSITIVE!!!!!! skin lotion ULTRA hydrating but WEAK for your little idiot baby skin your idiot loser dry baby skin" because my entire body is inexplicably so dry it's flaking (including my back???? who has EVER had a dry back) but most soaps dry me out more and most moisturizers break me out and god forbid i even look at a facewash for more than a second because it will somehow do both
#seriously when i wash my face WITH an extremely gentle hydrating cleanser i can't spend more than a second around my mouth area bc it#immediately starts to burn#and this is with any product!!!!#literally bought baby skin lotion bc apparently it's less likely to break you out than normal lotion...... Let's Hope.#just incredible how poorly im suited for life outside of a terrarium. i shouldve been a worm placed in to compost leaf litter#i do think i'd do better in a humid environment but that would mean living in a humid environment so like. untenable of course#also yes someone bought a print of my chappell drawing and payed FIFTEEN MORE DOLLARS than i asked for it! which was very nice#unfortunately i am physically incapable of holding onto money for more than three hours i get twitchy with the urge to spend

Top 10 Essential Gardening Tips for Adult Beginners: A Comprehensive Guide
Welcome to the delightful world of gardening, where the symphony of nature and the thrill of nurturing your own green haven awaits. If you're a gardening novice, fear not! This guide is tailored just for you. Whether you're cultivating a windowsill herb garden or transforming your backyard into a botanical paradise, these tips will set you on the path to success.
Start Small, Dream Big: As a beginner, resist the temptation to turn your entire yard into a lush Eden. Begin with a small plot or even containers for your favorite plants. This allows you to learn the basics without feeling overwhelmed.
Know Your Zone: Familiarize yourself with your USDA hardiness zone. This information is crucial for selecting plants that will thrive in your specific climate. Understanding your zone helps you make informed choices and increases the likelihood of a flourishing garden.
Sunshine and Shade: Different plants have different light requirements. Pay attention to the sunlight patterns in your garden and choose plants accordingly. Sun-loving plants like tomatoes and peppers need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight, while shade-loving varieties such as hostas and ferns thrive in filtered or dappled sunlight.
Soil: The Foundation of Success: Healthy soil is the secret behind a thriving garden. Invest in quality soil that suits your plant's needs. Most plants prefer well-draining soil, so be sure to amend your soil with compost to enhance its structure and fertility.
Water Wisely: The age-old adage "more is not always better" holds true for watering. Overwatering can be as harmful as underwatering. Research the water requirements of your plants, and water consistently. Consider using a drip irrigation system for efficient and controlled watering.
Choose the Right Tools: Equip yourself with the essential gardening tools. A durable pair of gloves, a trowel, pruners, and a watering can are must-haves. Quality tools not only make gardening more enjoyable but also contribute to better results.
Companion Planting: Take advantage of companion planting to maximize space and enhance growth. Some plants complement each other, deterring pests or providing mutual support. For example, planting basil near tomatoes can improve tomato flavor and protect against certain pests.
Pest Management: Be vigilant about pests, as they can quickly wreak havoc on your garden. Familiarize yourself with common garden pests in your area and adopt natural pest control methods, such as introducing beneficial insects or using neem oil.
Embrace Trial and Error: Gardening is a journey of discovery. Not every plant will thrive, and that's okay. Learn from your experiences, celebrate successes, and view challenges as opportunities for growth. Remember, every gardener, no matter how seasoned, has faced setbacks.
Celebrate the Seasons: Gardening is a dynamic, seasonal activity. Embrace the ebb and flow of the gardening calendar. Plan your garden to ensure a continuous display of colors and harvest throughout the seasons. Consider incorporating flowering plants for beauty and pollinator support.
In conclusion, embarking on your gardening journey as an adult beginner is an exciting adventure filled with growth and fulfillment. By starting small, understanding your environment, and adopting these tips, you'll soon find yourself immersed in the joys of cultivating a thriving garden. Happy gardening!

25 ways to be a little more punk in 2025
Cut fast fashion - buy used, learn to mend and/or make your own clothes, buy fewer clothes less often so you can save up for ethically made quality
Cancel subscriptions - relearn how to pirate media, spend $10/month buying a digital album from a small artist instead of on Spotify, stream on free services since the paid ones make you watch ads anyway
Green your community - there's lots of ways to do this, like seedbombing or joining a community garden or organizing neighborhood trash pickups
Be kind - stop to give directions, check on stopped cars, smile at kids, let people cut you in line, offer to get stuff off the high shelf, hold the door, ask people if they're okay
Intervene - learn bystander intervention techniques and be prepared to use them, even if it feels awkward
Get closer to your food - grow it yourself, can and preserve it, buy from a farmstand, learn where it's from, go fishing, make it from scratch, learn a new ingredient
Use opensource software - try LibreOffice, try Reaper, learn Linux, use a free Photoshop clone. The next time an app tries to force you to pay, look to see if there's an opensource alternative
Make less trash - start a compost, be mindful of packaging, find another use for that plastic, make it a challenge for yourself!
Get involved in local politics - show up at meetings for city council, the zoning commission, the park district, school boards; fight the NIMBYs that always show up and force them to focus on the things impacting the most vulnerable folks in your community
DIY > fashion - shake off the obsession with pristine presentation that you've been taught! Cut your own hair, use homemade cosmetics, exchange mani/pedis with friends, make your own jewelry, duct tape those broken headphones!
Ditch Google - Chromium browsers (which is almost all of them) are now bloated spyware, and Google search sucks now, so why not finally make the jump to Firefox and another search like DuckDuckGo? Or put the Wikipedia app on your phone and look things up there?
Forage - learn about local edible plants and how to safely and sustainably harvest them or go find fruit trees and such accessible to the public.
Volunteer - every week tutoring at the library or once a month at the humane society or twice a year serving food at the soup kitchen, you can find something that matches your availability
Help your neighbors - which means you have to meet them first and find out how you can help (including your unhoused neighbors), like elderly or disabled folks that might need help with yardwork or who that escape artist dog belongs to or whether the police have been hassling people sleeping rough
Fix stuff - the next time something breaks (a small appliance, an electronic, a piece of furniture, etc.), see if you can figure out what's wrong with it, if there are tutorials on fixing it, or if you can order a replacement part from the manufacturer instead of trashing the whole thing
Mix up your transit - find out what's walkable, try biking instead of driving, try public transit and complain to the city if it sucks, take a train instead of a plane, start a carpool at work
Engage in the arts - go see a local play, check out an art gallery or a small museum, buy art from the farmer's market
Go to the library - to check out a book or a movie or a CD, to use the computers or the printer, to find out if they have other weird rentals like a seed library or luggage, to use meeting space, to file your taxes, to take a class, to ask question
Listen local - see what's happening at local music venues or other events where local musicians will be performing, stop for buskers, find a favorite artist, and support them
Buy local - it's less convenient than online shopping or going to a big box store that sells everything, but try buying what you can from small local shops in your area
Become unmarketable - there are a lot of ways you can disrupt your online marketing surveillance, including buying less, using decoy emails, deleting or removing permissions from apps that spy on you, checking your privacy settings, not clicking advertising links, and...
Use cash - go to the bank and take out cash instead of using your credit card or e-payment for everything! It's better on small businesses and it's untraceable
Give what you can - as capitalism churns on, normal shmucks have less and less, so think about what you can give (time, money, skills, space, stuff) and how it will make the most impact
Talk about wages - with your coworkers, with your friends, while unionizing! Stop thinking about wages as a measure of your worth and talk about whether or not the bosses are paying fairly for the labor they receive
Think about wealthflow - there are a thousand little mechanisms that corporations and billionaires use to capture wealth from the lower class: fees for transactions, interest, vendor platforms, subscriptions, and more. Start thinking about where your money goes, how and where it's getting captured and removed from our class, and where you have the ability to cut off the flow and pass cash directly to your fellow working class people

Cornflower. Can't stop taking pics of these because they're dominating the front in-ground vegetable bed right now.

However the Climbing Peace rose is putting out some excellent effort, using a small redbud tree for support as it arches over the bed.

On a smaller note, the sweet alyssum in the back bed is blooming. It started out white and has progressively been getting more purple as time goes on (Royal Carpet variety).

I'm fairly impressed with how fast these tomato plants have doubled in size. They're just starting to put out flower bracts too or I'd be worried the bed was too nitrogen-rich. These are the ones I transplanted in trench-style, so we'll see how well they do once the rain goes away in summer. Trying to assess the benefit of more overall roots (trench-style) vs the benefit of roots in two different depths (deep-planted style) in my particular climate and ability to water. I suspect that the trenchers are going to struggle more when the drought conditions hit because I only give each plant 2 quarts of water once weekly when it's not raining to stretch out the supply I have collected in the rain barrels (no outdoor spigot due to Plumbing Issues).
I picked up three good gardening finds during this week's run for food waste for the chickens. The first is a nice load of nursery pots which was expected due to mother's day weekend.

Now I just have to wash and disinfect all of them. I also picked up three trays that the pots fit into so the clean pots will get racked and stacked in the shed in them for ease of grabbing a whole flat when I need to pot up anything.
Then there was a small bag of chopped straw:

I did fill one of the nesting boxes with it simply for convenience, but the rest will be used for mulch in situations where woodchips aren't appropriate.
And finally the haul that had me the most excited:

Half a grocery sack full of "old" seeds! There are over 20 packets and none of them are older than 2020 (5 years younger than a lot of the seeds I worked with this year btw). Quite a variety of vegetables, though nothing too unusual. There was one packet of peppermint seed, which I really don't need given the amount that's already growing, so I've earmarked that for guerrilla alleyway beautification.
Anyway, I'm happy about how things are going gardenwise this year. I think the combination of adding mineral-based fertilizers last year, getting plenty of rain this spring, and breaking things up into little tasks done every day (and kept accountable by posting here) has really helped to kick things off.
#the chickens would like to let you know that they helped too via their composting contributions over the past decade or so#everytime i dig a new bed i am forcefully reminded at just how bad the dirt started out as#the free wood chips are a newer addition but except for the slug invasion are already providing loads of benefits too#in other news the slugs found the kale this week#will be pulling some yeast out of the freezer for slug trap construction tomorrow#someday i will be able to afford sluggo plus but not today#gardening#flowers#gardening succeses#gardening trial and error experimentation#free stuff#recycling#the things set out in the alley are so random#the bag of straw was set next to a really nice golfing bag#i did not take the bag#it will probably make someone else's day though

How to begin a sustainable way of life
This is a draft of something I've been writing for a couple months. It is mainly focused on the culture of the USA. Feel free to repost or otherwise share, with or without credit.
Do not tell people what to doâhelp them do it!Â
Give the gift of relief from being forced to engage in societyâs unsustainable ways of life.Â
âPeople need to eat more plant-based foods.â ->Talk about your favorite recipes, give others recipes, cook for them, and grow vegetables and plants in your garden and give them away as gifts.Â
âPeople need to repair their clothes.â -> Offer to repair othersâ clothes, and teach people how to repair their clothes.Â
âPeople need to buy less clothes.â -> Give them old clothes that you donât want, help them repair their clothes
âPeople need to buy less plastic stuff.â ->Â Learn to make things that can serve the same purpose, such as baskets, and give them as gifts. Let people borrow things you own so they donât have to buy their own.Â
âPeople need to stop using leafblowers and other gas-guzzling machinery.â -> Offer to rake the leaves. You can use them as compost in your own garden.Â
âPeople need to be more educated about nature.â->Â Learn about nature yourself. Tell people about nature. Be open about your love of creatures such as snakes, spiders, and frogs. Do not show awareness that this could be strange. You are not obligated to quiet down your enthusiasm for creepy crawlies to demonstrate awareness that it is weird. Point out at every opportunity how these animals are beneficial.Â
âPeople need to use cars less.â -> Offer rides to others whenever you must go somewhere. Whenever you are about to go to the store, ask your neighbor or your friend who lives along the way, âIs there anything you need from the store?âÂ
You cannot control othersâ behaviors, but you can free them from being controlled.Â
If you think to yourself, âBut this would be so difficult to do!â ask yourself WHY? Why does your society coerce you into less sustainable ways of living, forcing you to consume excessively? After thinking about this, consider that it is less simple and easy than you thought to make more sustainable choices, so why would you judge others for not doing it?Â
Do not act aloneâact with others!Â
Environmentally friendly behaviors that can be done alone, without collaborating with or consulting another person, are the least powerful of all. Whenever an âenvironmentally friendlyâ behavior is suggested, figure out âHow can I give this as a gift?â or âHow can I make this possible on the level of a whole community?âÂ
âPersonal choicesâ do not work because every single person has to make them individually. If you are focused on making your own personal choice, you are not focused on others. If you are not focused on others, you are not helping them. If nobody is helping each other, most people wonât be able to make the âpersonal choice.â
You inherently share an ecosystem with your neighbors Â
Start with your neighbors, the people physically close to you. You live on the same patch of land, containing roots from the same plants and trees. You can speak to them face to face without traveling, which means you can easily bring them physical things without using resources to travel.Â
Always talk to your neighbors and be friendly with them. Offer them favors unprompted and tell them about how your garden is doing. Do not be afraid to be annoyingâa slightly annoying neighbor who is helpful, kind, and can be relied upon for a variety of favors or in times of need is a necessary and inevitable part of a good community. If you make the effort to be present in somebodyâs life, they will have to put up with you on some occasions, but that is just life. We cannot rely on each other if we do not put up with each other.Â
Simply spending time with someone influences them for goodÂ
Every hour you spend outside with your neighbor is an hour your neighbor doesnât spend watching Fox News. Every hour you spend talking with someone and interacting with them in the real world, eating real food and enjoying your real surroundings, is an hour you donât spend only hearing a curated picture of what reality is like from social media.Â
Isolation makes it easy for people to become indoctrinated into extremist beliefs. When someone spends more time alone, watching TV, Youtube, or scrolling social media, than they do with others, their concept of what other people are like and what the world is like comes more from social media than real life. TV and online media are meant to influence you in a specific way. Simply restricting the access these influences have to yourself and others is helpful.Â
A garden is the source of many giftsÂ
If you grow a garden, you can give your neighbors and friends the gift of food, plants, and crafted objects. This is one of the foundational ways to form community. When you give food, you provide support to others. When you give plants, you are encouraging and teaching about gardening. It is even better when you give recipes cooked from things you grew, or items crafted from things you grew. You can also give the gift of knowledge of how to grow these plants, cook these recipes, or craft these objects.Â
More on gift-giving
Some people are uncomfortable with receiving items or services as gifts. They want to feel like they are giving something back, instead of having obligation to return the favor hanging over them.Â
It can help to ask a simple favor that can be easily fulfilled. People generally like the feeling of helping someone else.Â
When you give someone a gift, it can help to say something like âOh, I have too many of this thing to take care of/store/eat myself! Do you think you could take some?â This makes your neighbor feel like they are helping you.Â
When allowing others to borrow items, you might not get them back. Donât worry about that. It just means the item found a place where it was needed the most. You can ask about the item if you think it might have been forgotten, and this can create an opportunity for a second meeting. But donât press.Â
If the person you give to insists upon some form of payment, this is a good opportunity to negotiate a trade.Â
Ask to be given compostable or recyclable thingsÂ
Ask your neighbor to save compostable scraps, biodegradable cardboard and paper products, and any other items that might be put to use. Use them in your own compost pile. Or, start a compost pile at the edge of the yard where you both can add to it. Remember that âwetâ compost like vegetable and fruit bits needs to be mixed with twice as much of âdryâ and âwoodyâ compost like cardboard, leaves, small twigs, paper and wood bits.Â
Use the front yard for gardening
Overcome the cultural norm that the front yard is only decorative. Use the front yard for gardening so you can be seen by others enjoying your garden, and others can witness the demonstration of the possibilities of land. In the front yard, anything you do intentionally with your land can be witnessed. It also makes you a visible presence in your community.Â
Grow staple foodsÂ
Donât just grow vegetables that cannot be the core component of a meal themselves. Grow potatoes, dry beans, black eyed peas and other nourishing, calorie-dense foods. Grow the ingredients of meals. You could even build a garden around a recipe.
Invite neighbors and friends over to eat food made from things you grewÂ
Be sure to send them home with leftovers. Â
Grow plants for basketsÂ
Containers are one of the fundamental human needs. If we had more containers, we wouldnât need plastic so much. You can learn to make baskets, and to grow plants that provide the raw materials for baskets.Â
If someone rakes their leaves, ask to have the leaves Â
If you see someone putting leaves in bags, donât be afraid to ask if you can have the leaves. More likely than not they will be happy to agree.Â
Collaborate with neighbors to plant things in the no-manâs-land of the property lineÂ
In the border land between your neighborâs yard and your yard, it is almost always just mowed grass because no one can plant anything without it affecting their neighbor. But these border lands add up to a lot of space. It would be much better if you talked to your neighbor about what would be nice to plant there, and together created a plan for that space.Â
Give others the freedom to wanderÂ
Make it clear that you will not get mad if the neighborâs kids play in your yard or run across it. Invite the neighbors onto your land as much as possible. Tell them they are allowed to spend time in a favored spot whenever they would like. Â
The power of the hand-made signÂ
If there is a yard sale, you always know about it because of the hand-drawn signs placed around. Therefore, a cookout or unwanted item exchange can be announced the same way. In rural areas I have seen hand-made signs that say: FIREWOOD or WE BUY GOATS or EGGS. This is one of the few technologies of community that remain in the USA. If someone who looks to buy and sell can put up a hand-made sign, why shouldnât you? Â
Religious people or people with strong political opinions like to put signs everywhere. If they have the confidence and courage to do so, why shouldnât you?Â
So if there is a message you would like everyone to see, use the simple power of the hand-made sign. Proclaim âBEE FRIENDLY ZONE!â above your pollinator garden with all the confidence of a religious fundamentalist billboard. Announce to the world, âVEGETABLES FREE TO ALLâJUST ASK!â âWE TAKE LEAVESâNO PESTICIDES.â Instead of YARD SALE, or perhaps in conjunction with YARD SALE, you can write, PLANT EXCHANGE or SEED SWAP or CLOTHING SWAP. Who can stop you?Â
Someone has to do it for society to change Â
Some of these ideas might be eccentric, strange, or even socially unacceptable, but there is no way to change what is normal except to move against it. Someone has to be weird. It might as well be you.Â

could i possibly get spencer and his bombshell when sheâs having issues with not getting as hungry as she usually does? like she eats her fill but her fill is less food than she normally eats? this is very self indulgent so feel free to skip đ
thank you for requesting <3 bombshell, fem
âSpencer, lovely?âÂ
Spencer believes that only occasionally do you use your powers of seduction against him. This stringing of words, Spencer, his name, rolling off of your tongue, and lovely, so quaint and said so nicely, how youâve called out, thatâs unintentional. Thatâs pure niceness.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â he asks, getting up to find you.Â
The point of you staying at Spencerâs apartment is to see you, why isnât he seeing you? (Dramatic. He invites you to spend time here because you want to and he wants you, and whatever you do while youâre here is fine by him.)Â
Youâre in the kitchen peeling fruits. A whole fruit salad, green and red apples cut in small slices like prep for an apple-sugar crumble, peeled tangerine, strawberries, pear, grapes. âNothing is wrong,â you sing-song. âWait, why do you think that?âÂ
âNo reason.â He sweeps as much of your mountain of peels and off cuts into his hand as he can and carries it to his mini compost bin. Thisâll take some time. âYou did call me, though?âÂ
âYeah, I want your opinion.â You slice through another strawberry.
Spencer cleans the last of the peels away, rinses his hands, and creeps up on you. âWhy are you drawing this out? Is it an important question? Donât be nervous,â he says, wrapping his arms around you from behind. Your shoulder is soft where he presses his nose.Â
âItâs not important, I just wanna know if you think itâs okay to melt some chocolate and drizzle it over the fruit. Is that greedy? Am I gonna go into a sugar overload?âÂ
âThatâs not greedy.â Spencer laughs softly, kissing your cheek.Â
You pull away from him, but only to look at him with your own smile. Itâs one heâs starting to know rather well, the I love you smile, fond and indulgent at once. It makes you look like youâre gonna pinch his cheeks.Â
âYouâre hungry, right?â you ask.Â
âYeah, I am.â Itâs a lot of fruit. Spencer doesnât know exactly why he says it at that very moment, but he suggests, âHow about we make a little pot for fondue instead. That way if we donât eat it all now we can put the fruit back in the fridge.âÂ
âYou just want me to feed you,â you tease.Â
Spencer hadnât thought about it, but the image is a pleasant one. âFondue was invented purely for dessert purposes at first, no seduction involved.âÂ
âLetâs involve it anyway.âÂ
He grins. âBefore or after we eat?â he asks lightly.Â
You tell him before in a way that reminds him that you arenât just his best friend but his twin flame, drawing him close to you, your hands fragrant with orange rind and the sweet strawberry juice staining your fingertips. You take his face into your hands as he holds your waist, and when you kiss him, he smiles the entire time.Â
âIt wasnât just chocolate,â he says, pulling away. âIt was cream and cherry liquor, too.âÂ
âWe should try it one day.âÂ
Spencer resists the urge to grab your face and squeeze your cheeks. âYeah, we will.âÂ
He melts some chocolate and heats a small round dish in the oven. He pours the chocolate into the dish and you, impressed, sing his praises as you make some lemonade slush in the blender. Itâs a fresh, cold snack for a warmer day. You take it in the living room with the window wide open and the drapes drawn back, sunshine at your feet.Â
Spencer pulls you into his lap as much as youâll allow him on the couch, the coffee table dragged to be in front of you, the TV remote held hostage under your arm. You dip a slice of apple into chocolate and offer it to him.
Spencer accepts it. He finds, as the bowl empties, the chocolate cools, that you donât seem to eat very much. He slows his grazing in case heâs being greedy, but after what could only be a handful of fruit youâre done, curling into his side and hugging his leg. Your attention is on the TV but your legs wiggle restlessly.
âIs something on your mind?â he asks.Â
âI donât feel very hungry.âÂ
âThatâs okay. It was a lot of fruit, angel, we can wrap it up.âÂ
âI feel like my appetite is awful lately,â you lament, sitting up to tip back across his lap, your shoulders to his thighs, looking up at him with a frown. âDo I look like Iâve lost weight to you?âÂ
Spencer holds your cheek. âI havenât noticed anything, are you worried?â he asks, rubbing the softest part of your cheek with his thumb.Â
âI guess itâs not a bad thing?â You wince.Â
âItâs not a bad thing if you donât feel hungry, but you need to eat. Maybe we can just switch to some dense food for a while. Protein bars and nuts, stuff like that.â Spencer leans down to tap your noses together. You laugh under your breath. âDo you want to lose weight?â he asks, frowning.Â
âNot really. Iâd prefer not to.âÂ
âOkay, good. Youâre perfect like this,â he says. âWe can just make sure you get your intake through whatever means necessary until we figure out whatâs changed. Maybe youâre just changing. We can start having smaller meals throughout the day. Itâs better for digestion.âÂ
You reach for a curl, twisting it around your fingers. âI have an appetite for you, at least.âÂ
âThatâs corny,â he says.Â
âYou love it, though.âÂ
Spencer pushes the âdiminishing appetiteâ search results from his head. He can worry later, when youâve been well and thoroughly kissed.Â

oofff you all are popping off with cheol and the nsfw bingo squares - and don't get me wrong, i'm here for it, but i hope we can all match each other's freaks yk
⥠kat
[ series master list ]

bingo squares: spanking
pairing: choi seungcheol x f!reader
genres: nextdoorneighbor!seungcheol, college student!reader, age gap
summary: y/n is home from college to find her new next-door neighbor is a much younger, hotter man than when she left the fall before (goodbye old mrs. windermere) - but to y/n he seems very lonely and overworked, and she sets out to fix that
word count: 2.2k
warnings: age-gap, smut, voyeurism, oral sex (f. receiving), fingering, squirting, overstimulation, spanking, cum eating
it was a cool, balmy morning, perfect for a run. y/n made sure to stop and stretch outside her next-door neighborâs house. she always started out with a tshirt covering her sports bra, but by the time she had made it around the entire neighborhood, she would just be so hot and sweaty that she would have to take it off. just in time to see seungcheol heading out for his workday - she thought it was cute that he always waved and said âhi.â
besides, why not let mr. choi see what he was missing. why he was all alone in a huge house, y/n had no idea - it felt a bit sad to her - and she imagined he was a bit sad, she felt like he deserved a little show. something he could store away in his man-brain. she liked to imagine that he jerked off to thoughts of her while he showered.Â
lately, she had even made sure to leave her curtains open at night when she was changing for bed - her bedroom faced his. she was basically doing him a service. like a good deed or whatever. and the thought that he might be watching only made her put in the extra effort, like wearing her cutest underwear. because, really, that poor man, all alone in a huge house, and no one around to take care of his needs - she couldnât even imagine how blue his balls must be.Â
plus, why not make him ache to be balls deep in her hot, tight pussy. she had always liked the idea of an older man anyway. boys her age were less than ideal - they didnât know how to handle her. but she was certain mr. choi would know exactly how to take care of her and all of her needs.
not to mention, she had the best reason to randomly knock on his door - she was house sitting for her parents. so she was all alone in a big house, just one girl against all the creepy sounds that could happen, like trees scraping the window or the raccoons that liked snuffling around her motherâs composting area. and what if she heard sounds like someone breaking in?Â
she was ecstatic that her mom had already let the neighbors know that she would be home alone that summer while her parents were off doing some research in whatever far-flung country. her amazing mother had even taken her to meet her new neighbor, since he was right next door - the closest in case y/n needed something. he had been so nice too, letting her know that she could drop by anytime. he even offered to let her use his pool since he wasnât really home to enjoy it himself.Â
so far, she hadnât taken advantage of his offer to use his pool, but this morning, she planned to ask him if it was okay, since it was really hot. plus she was tired of banging around her parentâs. although, she had baked some cookies - she felt like she might take those to him, as well. whatever she needed to do to get to ride his face - she really didnât care.Â
she made her way back, picking up her pace a bit, worried she might miss him - he was like clockwork - she knew when he left and when he came home, always roughly at the same time each day. she made it back just in time to almost collide with him as she walked to knock on his front door.Â
she laughed, âoh, iâm so sorry, mr. choi,â she gushed, âi just wanted to ask if it was still okay if i used your pool?â she made sure to stand with a hand on her hip and to do her best to not look out of breath.
he was dressed in a button-down and slacks, his suit jacket slung over his arm, and half a bagel in his mouth. he was so cute - his hair was just the right amount of messy, but otherwise, he looked so clean-cut. he held up a finger to her and unlocked his car, a nice two-seater, and unceremoniously chucked his bag and jacket in before turning back to her.
she watched him take her in for a second, âyeah, the pool - of course - i can give you the gate code if you have your phone?â
she didnât run with her phone actually - she liked to have her breaks from tech. she smiled, âoh, no, i donât actually - could you text it to me?â
of course he could, like the darling he was. he took her number and sent the gate code to her.Â
âthereâs some snacks and drinks in the outdoor kitchen too,â he offered.Â
âoh, thanks - thatâs so kind of you,â she genuinely smiled because it was really sweet, since she had never seen anyone really come by his house.Â
he smiled, âand itâs seungcheol - mr. choi is my dad,â his dimples only grew at the bad line.Â
she laughed though - he was cute enough to get away with a few corny lines. she thanked him again and made sure to tell him to âhave a good dayâ and all of the things he should be told before he went off to work his insane hours. she had the urge to kiss him, but instead, she just flashed her cutest smile and walked back home.Â
she showered and changed into a skimpy bikini. she grabbed a book and some extra snacks and her phone, and headed through the back yard to enjoy seungcheolâs amazing pool. she swam for a bit and then lounged and read - it was nice to be able to go back and forth between the pool and her book without having to worry about anyone bothering her stuff.Â
she did the same thing the next day too. and the next. but friday, she changed course - she stopped him again in the morning, and offered to make him dinner - she knew he would be home at a reasonable hour, plus she did want to pay him back. actually, pay him back because he had been really nice. plus, being inside his home would really progress things.Â
he hadnât seemed as surprised as she had hoped, but he agreed all the same.Â
she was a great cook - she was not concerned about that part of things at all. she had planned a menu the day before and made a grocery order for fillets with a pan sauce, potatoes that she would roast, and she was planning a beet salad with goatâs cheese, some bread that she had started the night before, and dessert would be cherry galette with sweet cream - something easy to throw together but eye catching. she was in no mood to half-ass this.Â
she only went to the pool for a quick swim, and then she went home to bake and cook. she made sure everything was perfect and prepped before she went to grab a shower, dress, do some quick makeup, and generally look as perfect as possible. and then she made her way to seungcheolâs house.Â
he opened the door, still wearing his clothes from the day - his top shirt buttons were unbuttoned, his sleeves were rolled up, and he had a drink. he smiled, and she couldnât help but return the smile when she fully saw his dimples. he was just so cute and gorgeous. she wondered if his cock was perfect too.Â
he hung around in the kitchen talking to her as she finished things off. he wasnât distracting, but he did comment a few times that she had gone to a lot of trouble.Â
she just laughed, âiâm home alone all day - this was a fun distraction, plus your pool is so amazing and youâve been so nice to let me use it,â she said with a smile.Â
he was quiet, though. she glanced up and noticed the way he was watching her - his gaze taking her in. he nodded, âhow could i say ânoâ to you though?â he asked, voice softer than she was prepared for.Â
she blushed, âi mean itâs pretty easy actually - my dad says ânoâ to me all the time,â she smiled and turned back to what she was doing.Â
she glanced back to see him nodding, âiâm sure you donât do quiet so much to try to please your dad though, do you?âÂ
she felt the small shivers that broke out over her skin - his voice was so deep. she shrugged, âthatâs not really my department.â
âno, you donât want to make your father happy?â he sounded incredulous, as he gave his drink a small swirl.
she was pulling dishes from the oven, making sure all the times lined up. she didnât answer immediately.Â
instead, she felt his hands on her hips, âdoes he know the kind of underwear you wear to bed?â she felt his lips brush her throat, âdoes he know what a slut you are for my attention?â he whispered just beneath her ear, his lips dragging gently over her skin.Â
her eyelids fluttered closed at the contact. she felt his hands slide down the front of the dress she was wearing, before hiking it up, âwhat underwear are you wearing tonight, baby girl?â he whispered, even as his hands traced up her thighs to her panties - feeeling the barely there satin that just covered her pussy.Â
she felt the hard way he exhaled, âfuck,â he murmured, his fingers slipping under the fabric, âand already wet for me too.â
she shivered again, letting him pick her up and settle her on the counter, he fit perfectly between her thighs. she wrapped her legs around his trim waist, as he pulled her close, kissing her roughly. she moaned breathily as she returned his kisses.Â
when he leaned back, he gazed at her, âyou did mean for us to eat though, didnât you?â
she nodded meekly.Â
he smiled, âright,â his fingers traced down her throat and grazed her breast, âyou went to so much trouble for me,â he whispered, smiling.Â
she shook her head, âit wasnât trouble,â she reached up, smoothing his bangs from his face.Â
âif you just wanted to fuck, i would say it was a lot of trouble since the gate code and the door code are the same,â he watched her as she nodded slowly, accepting what he had just implied.
he pressed a bit closer, âbut you want more than just a few gos on my cock, donât you, baby doll?â
she bit her lower lip, nodding, âyes,â she breathed.Â
she was almost surprised that they made it through dinner. by the time she offered him dessert, he pulled her into his lap, rushing to kiss her. his hand sliding easily between her legs. he swiped her panties to the side and stuffed his fingers in roughly, âso fucking tight,â he whispered.Â
she gasped softly, trying to control her breath as he began to finger her and kiss her throat and exposed chest. she was almost shocked by how quickly she came, her juices gushing for him - it usually took ages for her to even come with other guys. but before she could really take it in, he was picking her up and placing her on the table. he pushed her dress up past her midriff. she saw him stick his fingers in the cream on the galette - he held them out to her. she opened her mouth, licking his fingers clean, letting him push his fingers farther and farther into her mouth.
âlook at you, baby girl, so good for me,â he smiled, pulling his fingers from her mouth and swiping them through the cream again - this time they didnât go to her mouth. she felt the sudden chilly, stickiness in her pussy - she clenched around his fingers. he nodded, âso perfect, baby, i donât even have to tell you what to do,â he murmured.Â
and then he was eating her out. stretching her and licking the cream from inside her. she fell back onto the hardwood dining table, sure that she had never felt more bliss. and he brought her so close to orgasm and pulled back, he gave her pussy a small smack.Â
âseungcheol,â she whined softly as she felt a second smack that landed perfectly on her clit, causing her hips to buck.Â
âhmm, what is it little girl? what do you need from daddy?â he asked as he finally pulled her panties off, dropping them to the side.Â
âneed you - need your cock,â she whimpered.Â
he nodded, âi know little girl,â he smoothed her hair, âmaybe in a bit, but first i need to do something,â he smiled as he dragged her to the edge of the table and flipped her over onto her stomach.Â
she felt him carass her ass, squeezing her cheeks roughly, and then smacking them gently - his smacks were small at first, and then they were harder, open palmed smacks that made her jolt slightly forward against the table. she could only moan and whimper in response.Â
it went on for several minutes until he seemed satisfied that she had been spanked enough, âjust so you know why iâm spanking you, baby girl, if you ever go running and take your shirt off again so everyone in the neighborhood can see your perfect little tits bouncing, i wonât take it easy on you, iâll really have to punish you - understood?â he whispered, his hand was gently stroking her reddened skin, soothing her after the fact.Â
she nodded, âyes, daddy,â she moaned.Â
he seemed satisfied, sighing softly, âgood - now we can go upstairs, and i can take care of you the way youâve been begging for me to all month.âÂ
she sat up, wincing slightly - he kissed her softly, his hands cupping her face, âyou want to be good for me, donât you?â he whispered as he pulled away.
she nodded, wanting nothing else.Â

Can you offer me a nice shirt in this trying time?
Summary: The usual shenanigans leave you with an unwearable shirt. All you can do is ask your friend (?) for help.
Characters: Leona, Jade, Epel, Malleus and GN!Reader (separate, platonic adjacent...?)
Warnings: mentions of anxiety and mild panic over the dirty shirt
By opening the document, you agree to Mx Tattly's terms of source confidentiality.
-ËËâââââââââââââââââââââââââââ

Looking at your pathetic expression akin to a kicked puppy while you tried to cover your dirty shirt made Leona burst into laughter, even after you just stepped on his tail
You looked away, flustered, not even wanting to recount the embarassing turn of events that just happened
But you didn't need to; Leona heard it all
He heard you from the other side of the botanical gardens talking with your friends, who started bickering with each other
Things got a bit physical in a playful way, but none of you really expected to shove each other so hard you all crumbled to the ground like a ridiculous domino
And the only thing you could be glad for was that you missed the pile of compost nearby
And now you were in front of him as he quite enjoyed your flustered state
"I wanted to apologise for stepping on your tail, you know. But I changed my mind."
Leona's laughter turned into snickering as he wiped nonexistent tears away from his eyes
"If you don't want me to laugh, then stop acting like a clown."
You stomped your foot, which made Leona look at you
"This is serious! I have no other clean shirt and class is going to start soon. So you can either help me or give me an idea or leave me alone."
Something in Leona's eyes changed at your words: his mocking aura went away slightly, and you could almost hear what he was thinking
Still thinking about class after being dragged in dirt? Damn goody-two-shoes.
"Alright, I'm doing this just this once. But if I catch you play in dirt again, you're on your own, you damn warthog."
Leona put a hand in his pocket, then tapped his foot
To your surprise, the dirt started vanishing from your outfit right away
All you could do was stare at Leona, mouth agape
And he stared right back at you
Until his smile turned into a frown in a secons
"What are you waiting for, a kiss on the cheek? Just go to your class already."
You just frantically nodded and scurried away from him
...just to return a few seconds later and leave, in fact, a kiss on his cheek
He just stared at you while you awaited any kind of reaction beside his resting tired face
"...Forget what I said about not helping you. Next time I'll shove you into dirt myself."
That reaction seemed to satisfy you enough, as you took your leave right after his threat
ăâ˘â˘ââ˘â˘ă

Working at the Mostro Lounge had its ups and downs
Ups: the job is on campus, the place is always looking for workers and it's one of the best paying jobs on campus
Downs: one of your coworkers is Jade, and the other is Floyd
They'd be relatively nice coworkers if they didn't take their sweet time with helping you while enjoying every second of suffering from all living creatures
Like they did when you tripped on your way to a client and spilled the drink on yourself
They just watched for a few seconds how you panicked over the dirty shirt and the irritated customer
Jade came and dragged you away a few seconds too late for your liking while Floyd started on another drink against his will
You had no idea why Jade led you to the Lounge's changing room, but his smile did not calm you down at all
After all, Jade was very talented at everything except of being reassuring
He left you on your own for a few seconds, coming back with a new uniform shirt, which he handed to you
"This is a replacement for your dirty shirt. Please get changed so you can resume your duties."
You stared at Jade suspiciously
Was he handing you a shirt just like that?
He accepted your silent confusion for a few more seconds before his smile widened, showing his teeth
"What is the problem, Reader? Perhaps you require my assistance with getting changed?"
No matter how hard you frowned at him, the blush was not making your disdain too effective
"What? No! That's not it!"
"...So you're saying you would not refuse my services if that were to be the case?"
"I- no! Ugh!"
Even while you hid your face in the shirt you knew he was still giving you that annoying grin
"You're saying I can just change into this? Without any payment or punishment?"
Jade gasped and put a hand over his chest, feigning offense
"What an incredulous accusation, Reader. I can assure you that no consequences will follow you needing another shirt for the remainder of your shift."
"..."
"..."
"...Are you sure?"
"Certainly."
You knew better than to trust any of the tweels, but you supposed you'll cross that bridge when you got to it
Besides, being MIA on your shift might make Azul take thaumarks out of your paycheck, and you didn't need to manifest that kind of outcome
"Fine, I'll take it. Please leave so I can change."
"As you wish."
So he left you in the empty changing room, a hint of a blush still on your face
You knew getting revenge on any student at NRC was a bad idea, but you couldn't help but imagine "accidentally" spilling some cherry juice on Jade's dorm uniform
ăâ˘â˘ââ˘â˘ă

Cleaning duty in the library was not fun, but at least Epel knew how to make things entertaining
He wasn't a comedian or anything like that, but his Vil-themed tirades were always animated and gossipy enough that they had you hooked on his every word
Or every word that you could understand, at least
And a complaining storytelling Epel is not the most careful Epel
So you were not too surprised when he spilled some ink on your sleeves
"Hey, my shirt! You spilled ink on me!"
Epel noticed the big stains and his eyes widened
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to!"
"What am I gonna do?! I have no clean laundry today!"
While you were frantically pacing around, Epel was staring at the floor, not being able to meet your eyes
"Hey, come on... It's not that bad. See, it's just a small stain!"
The death glare you threw his way rivaled Vil's, and Epel took a step back instinctively
"Okay, okay! I get it, let me think..."
A few seconds of contemplation later, Epel went to the window and looked outside
"Hey, Vil is having a club meeting outside right now. He must have a stain stick or a spell or something."
"What about cleaning duty?"
"Just go deal with your shirt and come back when it's clean. I'll put away all the old ink in the meantime."
After Epel's convincing, you relented
But now you had the perfect opportunity to show off your newly aquired NRC thirst for revenge...
Let's just say that Vil was very thankful you told him about Epel's attitude towards your stain while he dealt with it....
Epel did not talk to you the next day
Except for that time during lunch when he came towards you with a bitter expression and some comically overfilled pockets
When he got next to you, he shoved his hand into one of his pockets and, with difficulty, pulled out 5 stain pens
"I hate you."
That was all he said before walking away
ăâ˘â˘ââ˘â˘ă

During your days as an NRC student you've learned a lot of things, including facts about the weather
1: The weather will always be nice on the date of the monthly scarabinelle debates in the courtyard
2: The statue of the King of the Underworld from the courtyard never got wet from rain
3: Unlike his statue, you were not waterproof
Neither was your shirt
So by the time you reached the Hall of Mirrors, you were soaking wet
You marveled at your misfortune right as Malleus entered the room through the Diasomnia mirror
His mild surprise from bumping into you made him almost not notice your predicament
"...Child of man? What happened to you?"
You sighed and told him you were caught in the rain, but you had no clean change of clothes and were feeling pretty cold already
"Hm. This can't do. Humans are very fragile creatures, a simple soak can leave lasting effects on your body.
Malleus seemed to fall deep in thought, as if he was presented with an incredible puzzle, and not the random misfortune of a friend
He nodded to himself, and you were curious to know the conclusion he reached
"Allow me to help you."
You sighed of relief at his decision
Out of everyone on campus, you trusted Malleus to be genuine and helpful, so you accepted his help
You didn't think much of it when he pulled out his magical pen from his pocket; you figured he was just going to use a small drying spell
Boy were you wrong.
Malleus rotated his pen slightly in the air, creating an ever growing wind
The speed and intensity of it grew very fast, and you had to grab onto a pillar to hold yourself in place
You watched in horror how a few students were pushed by the wind back into their mirrors as soon as they entered the Hall of Mirrors
You couldn't even attempt to do any damage control, since the wind was too loud for your voice to be heard
After what felt like forever, Malleus' wind started to dwindle and your feet were able to be on the ground again
"That... That certainly was a method of helping."
"Well? Was it successful? You seem pretty dry to me."
He smiled proudly at you
It was obvious how he knew that he did a good job and he was simply awaiting your praise
You patted down your uniform, and were surprised to notice your uniform was, indeed, dry
"...Yeah, actually. Thanks!"
"You are very welcome."
His smug words were carried by his confident grin as he proudly marched away from you and out of the room
The whole interaction was definitely weird, so you couldn't help but share it over lunch with your friends, Ace and Deuce
After you shared Malleus' small drying machine job, Ace started laughing at you, while Deuce put a hand on your shoulder, a sympathetic look on his face

Yuki doesnât say much when you change the flowers.
It happens quietly, usually on a Sunday. The kind of slow morning where the sky hangs low and the light in the apartment turns golden for no reason at all. Sometimes heâs just getting back from a run, shoes damp with dew, shirt clinging to his back. Sometimes heâs on the couch, scrolling through lap data, one leg tucked under him and his hair still damp from the shower.
You move through the room like itâs something sacredâplucking limp stems from glass jars, fingertips stained with water and wilting green. On the kitchen counter. By the window. Once, tucked inside a toothbrush cup by the bathroom sink.
You never make a big deal out of it. Just hum under your breath and hum again when the new bouquet unfurls its petals under the faucet. Itâs the only way you really keep track of the seasons, you told him once, hands full of lilacs and eucalyptus. When you donât have time to notice the air changing or the daylight shifting, you trust the florists to do it for you.
He listens to that in the back of his mind, files it away. Like how tulips mean spring. Daisies mean rain is coming. Marigolds mean youâre starting to sleep with the fan on again.
He never says anything when the old ones go. Just watches as you slide them from their vases, one by one, and lay them gently into the compost bin. The petals fall apart in your fingers sometimes, thin and papery. The stems bend too easily. Theyâve softened with time.
But when you leave the roomâoff to take a call, or switch on the kettle, or pull laundry from the dryerâhe moves.
Softly. Like itâs a secret. Like heâs doing something wrong, though it never really is.
He reaches into the bin, fingers threading through damp coffee grounds and orange peels until he finds the stems. Not all of them. Just one. Maybe two. The ones still holding their shape, even if their color has started to fade.
â˰ THE TULIP - APRIL °Ëâ
The front door creaks open with the soft click of a key turning too carefully, like heâs afraid to wake the walls.
Yuki drops his duffel bag quietly just inside, his shoulders stiff from the flight, neck aching from hours spent tilted awkwardly against the seat. Tokyo rain clings to the sleeves of his hoodie, tiny dark circles blooming where it soaked through.
Heâs barely taken a step inside when he sees youâcurled up on the couch, arms folded tight against your chest, knees drawn in like youâre trying to make yourself smaller. Youâre asleep, mouth parted just slightly, hair falling across your cheek. The TV flickers with the low hum of some late-night rerun, casting moving shadows over the blanket tangled around your legs.
He moves quietly, kneeling beside the coffee table. Thatâs when he sees the bouquetâstill wrapped in brown paper, tulip heads peeking shyly from the fold, pale pink and a little bruised around the edges.
The receipt is folded underneath it, timestamped from hours ago. You must have picked them up right after your shift. You mustâve waited.
Yuki swallows around something that tastes too much like guilt and gratitude and everything in between. He should wake you. He doesnât.
Instead, he touches one of the tulips lightly, presses the soft edge of its petal between his fingers. He smiles, just a little. Then he stands, pads over to the kitchen, and pulls an old mug from the cupboard. Fills it halfway. Snips the stems like you always do.
By the time you stir awake, groggy and blinking through the television static, the tulips are standing tall in the center of the kitchen table, catching the soft, early light of dawn.
You donât even notice the single tulip missing from the bunch.
But Yuki does. He presses it between the pages of an old notebook that night, the faintest scent of your waiting still clinging to its petals.
â˰ THE DAISY - JUNE °Ëâ
The clouds break with no warning.
One second itâs thick summer air, heavy with sun and the low buzz of heat, and the next itâs thunder cracking over the buildings and rain hitting the pavement like applause.
You donât even flinch.
Yukiâs still drying his hair from a post-run shower when he hears the balcony door slide open. The curtain lifts with a gust of wind, carrying the scent of wet concrete and ozone.
When he walks into the living room, towel draped over his shoulders, he freezes at the sight of youâbarefoot, already soaked, arms outstretched like youâre trying to catch the sky in your hands.
You laughâhead tipped back, eyes closedâspinning once on your heel like a kid. Your white T-shirt clings to your sides, and your hair sticks to your forehead in wet strands, but you donât seem to care.
âItâs raining,â you say, like he hadnât noticed.
âI can see that,â he replies, deadpanâbut he doesnât pull you back inside. He leans on the doorframe, watching you twirl barefoot on the slick tiles, lightning stitching its way across the clouds.
Thereâs a tiny jar by the railing with a single daisy, already sagging under the weight of the water. You mustâve grabbed it from the little garden box, some spontaneous, sunlit moment made permanent in glass.
Heâll take it inside laterâafter the sky clears, after youâve come back in, dripping and radiant, tugging him by the wrist to dance with you in puddles.
That night, while youâre brushing your hair out, back turned to him in the mirror, he plucks the daisy from its jar and slips it between the pages of a half-filled journal.
Even months later, it still smells like summer rain.
â˰ THE MARIGOLD - LATE AUGUST °Ëâ
The silence after the argument feels like its own kind of noise.
Yuki sits at the edge of the bed, elbows on his knees, fingers knotted in his hair. Youâre in the kitchen, pretending to do dishes, though all he hears is water running and not much else.
Neither of you meant for it to go that far. The fight was stupidâabout groceries, or maybe laundry, or maybe the way he sometimes shuts down when things get hard. Youâd raised your voice. Heâd left the room.
Now itâs sunset, and the apartment glows with that soft, golden hush that only comes once a day, like the light is trying to forgive everything it touches.
When you appear in the doorway, your expression isnât angry anymore. Youâre holding something in your handsâa marigold, still bright, pulled from the vase on the table.
You walk up to him slowly and offer it out, wordlessly.
He looks up, meets your eyes. Then he laughsâquiet and a little embarrassedâand takes the flower from you, twirling it once between his fingers.
âI was an ass,â he says.
âYou were tired,â you reply. âSo was I.â
He tugs you down beside him, your thigh pressed against his. The marigold rests between you on the bedspread, its orange glow catching the last of the sun.
Later, he pretends to be asleep while you make dinner. He slips the marigold into a folded napkin and places it gently in the spine of his notebook.
It smells like apologies and soft light and the feeling of coming home again.
Each flower is carefully flattened between the pages of an old notebook he keeps zipped up in the lining of his suitcase. He doesn't need to label them. He remembers. Which flower came from which Sunday. Which week you couldnât sleep. Which day you laughed so hard you spilled water all over the counter.
Sometimes, he tucks one into his pocket before a flight or race weekend. It crumbles a little each time he does, but itâs still enough. Just a whisper of the color, the shapeâof you.
You never notice.
Or maybe you do. Maybe thatâs why you started tying the stems with twine now, something softer and easier to unwind, like youâre giving permission. Like youâre saying, go on, take this one too.
And he does.
Quietly, always.
