#hurt comfort prompt

i think it would be so fun and cute if a character had been trapped in a lightless labyrinth for a long time. stumbling around whimpering at roars in the darkness, tripping over uneven stones that slice their feet.

and then they get rescued and then there is light (too bright) and people (too loud) and they have no idea what to make of it and they just find a dark corner to cry in!!!

all of those sentence starters really do seem like lando when he is hard on himself! I would love to hear any of your ideas for any of them/general lando angst if you are up for it (no pressure though!)

By the time Charles had found Lando, the other was curled up behind a stack of old tyres. There were tear stains on his cheeks. His knees were pulled to his chest, cheek resting on one and his eyes looked empty. It was as if there was nothing behind them. Charles almost winced looking at him because it was as if all the light had gone out of his eyes and all that was left was this tired, shell of a man. "What do you want?", Lando asked, and it sounded as if even saying those four words took effort that Lando didn't have anymore. "Just checking on you", Charles shrugged as he sat beside the other. He left a little space between them, knowing that Lando like this probably wasn't receptive to touch, "Thought you could use someone" Lando snorted at that and horrible, twisted looking expression crossed his face. It was a mix between anguish and anger mixed with some form of amusement that Charles couldn't bare to see on his friends face. Worry flooded his chest as Lando looked away from him and seemed to make himself smaller.

"Why do you care?", Lando whispered, "Why do you want to be around me?"

Charles didn't say anything for a moment but he offered his hand to Lando. He didn't pressure the other to take it. He just left it facing palm up between them, an offering of comfort that he was sure the other was going to take as their eyes met.

"Because I love and care about you", Charles admitted easily because it was the truth.

Lando could scream and shout at him. He could rant and vent, and cry if he wanted, but Charles wasn't going anywhere. He wasn't going to let Lando chase him away or isolate himself when he was so clearly hurting.

"I'll hurt you", Lando whispered but he still linked his fingers with Charles's and squeezed softly, "Everyone says I hurt the people I love. That's what they say about me now. Hurt the team. Hurt my friends. I don't want to hurt you too"

"You won't", Charles smiled softly because he meant those words as he lifted their joined hands to press a kiss to Lando’s cold knuckles, "You're not what they're trying to make you. I see you Lando, and that's what matters. I'm here. I won't let them or you keeping hurting yourself"

Lando made a choked noise before the tears were falling again. He buried his face in his knees. His shoulders shaking, but he never let go of Charles's hand, and Charles counted that as a win as he kept whispering reassurances to the other.

He loved him. He wasn't going to let him suffer alone.

When the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger and the mask slips, it's great.

But when the unflappable character sees someone they care about in danger, and the mask DOESN'T slip.

Because they understand they need to be calm and unflappable now more than ever; if it protects them, it will certainly protect the person they care about. So their voice doesn't waver, their hands don't shake. They don't panic. From the outside looking in, they're as calm as could be. They handle it.

But after it's over-when the person they care about is safe, and the unflappable character is alone-they completely shatter. Gasping breaths, sobs, barely holding it together because someone they love almost DIED, and it was far, far too close for comfort.

(Optional: Character that they care about finds them in this state and comforts them.)

There’s a distinctive moment at which Caretaker realizes something is wrong. Maybe something gives it away. Like…

Staring at nothing.

A nervous habit, like tapping a finger or biting a nail.

Breathing too fast.

Not breathing.

Talking just a little bit too loudly.

Not talking, all day.

Refusing food.

Visibly tired. Eye bags.

Dead eyes.

Eyes slightly widening at the sight of a trigger.

That very small shudder.

There’s something about a whumpee just sitting down. Not fainting, necessarily. Maybe they’re just about to faint, and they quietly just kneel on the ground at a time and place that doesn’t make sense. They don’t even have the capacity or willingness to articulate why they need to abruptly stop and sit. Maybe they’re catatonic while the others look at them.

Maybe a caretaker can see the dull, vacant look in their eyes and immediately senses that something is seriously wrong. Maybe the fainting comes just a few moments later.

How to Write a Panic Attack

Physical Symptoms of a Panic Attack:

pounding or racing heart

sweating

chills

trembling

difficulty breathing

weakness or dizziness

tingly or numb hands

chest pain

stomach pain or nausea

feeling lightheaded

tense muscles

dry mouth

constriction in the chest

feeling like they're being choked

Other Symptoms:

heightened vigilance for danger and physical symptoms

anxious and irrational thinking

a strong feeling of dread, danger or foreboding

fear of going mad, losing control, or dying

feelings of unreality and detachment from the environment

Triggers for a Panic Attack:

something unexpected (ex: a phone call)

a reminder (objects, smells, locations, specific phrases, etc. that can be tied back to a traumatic experience)

stress (from work, a relationship, family, etc. that has been building up)

silence (ex: being alone in a quiet room. The silence can amplify a sense of isolation)

flashbacks (a trigger that causes the person to flash back to a traumatic memory)

out of nowhere (sometimes panic attacks just get triggered by seemingly nothing)

He couldn't breathe. Oh God, he couldn't breathe and he was going to die.

She knew the panic was building up, but it crashed over her like a tsunami that swept her off her feet. The pull threatened to pull her out to sea and it was all-consuming.

They felt the panic begin to wrap its arms around them like a shadow.

"Is it okay if I hold your hand?"

"Don't touch me-- don't touch me!"

Her mind was running at a million miles a second but she couldn't pinpoint a single thought.

"It's okay. You're safe."

An icy hand had reached through their ribcage and was squeezing their heart. They couldn't breathe and they didn't know what to do to regain their breath.

"My chest hurts. It hurts."

"I can't!"

They were a crumpled heap, stowed away in the corner as tears streamed down their face.

She felt like she was on a boat out at sea, the room swaying and adding to the nausea that was washing over her.

He felt like he was having a heart attack.

They gasped for air but each breath felt shallower than the last.

She could hear her heart pounding in her ears, beating like a panicked drum to the rhythm of her fear.

He felt like he was standing on the edge of a building.

They couldn't move. It was like someone was holding down their limbs, the panic rendering them utterly frozen.
