I haven't been able to stop thinking about Rainbow Color Inkantation because oh my god this song is so damn hype and cool.

Like... okay, it's not the best Calamari Inkantation we've gotten but it's still incredibly good, at least in my opinion I think its good. 3Mix still beats it in my mind but this song is a STRONG second place.

This song perfectly captures Splatoon 3 to me, it's chaotic, loud, in your face, it celebrates the past, acknowledges the present and has a futuristic edge.

It's so damn blood pumping and adrenaline inducing as each Idol battles for attention and control. It's what you want in a song that's used for the final day of the Grand Festival. It's literally NOW OR NEVER! GO! GO! GO! THIS IS IT!!!

The Idol specific parts when you get the Ultra Signals are my favourite sections of the song, it's SOOOO GOOOOOOODDDDD!!!!! UGHHHH!!!!!! The Squid Sister's section is so sweet, happy and cute as they play the song that they were announced with 9 years ago. Further cementing that their arcs from Splatoon 1 have been finally completed. They sing together in this incredibly harmonized way... It's... it's beautiful...

Off the Hook's section feels so hopeful and inspirational, it feels like Pearl and Marina are just singing to each other and expressing their love for each other... I can imagine Marina hugging Pearl and spinning her around as they sing Ebb & Flow...

Deep Cut's part is pure fucking hype! I LOVE ITTTTT!!!!!!!! I love how they sing something completely original it's so sick man. THEIR CHEERS AND "HA! HA! HA!" So good oh my friggen god bro. Just like the team they represented, their section gives me hope that these three cheeky bandits will continue on and keep making bangers.

I wish i was an expert in music to better explain why i really like this song but alas, i ain't no Anthony Fantano....

I also wanna end off by talking about the final 10 seconds...

Oh. My God. Out of all of the Now or Nevers we've had, those final 10 seconds is my favorite ending to a Now or Never like song... EVER! It just pumps you with so much adrenaline, it's like the song stabbed you with 2 EpiPens in your ear drums. It's so anxiety inducing that you could make a crowd at a rave faint right there and then.

Seriously, go listen to the full 7 minute version of the song if you haven't already, it's pure magic i tell you.

Also, i headcanon that these three helped with the production of the song.

Some of parts of the song reminded me a lot of DJ Octavio's signature style and i think it would be cute if him, Captain 3 and Acht helped with the production of the song.

The end of a saga.

OOOOHHH BOY. I got a lot of words. First off yes I did make an Eight styled poem for this. Second, This silly little series about squid people has left me in a chokehold. I remember looking at the trailers in 2015 as a little 8/9 year old and now I’m close to finishing high school.

I remember missing the my first splatfest (pokemon splatfest) because I wasn’t home…. I also remember being so sad during the Callie and Marie splatfest and team Callie losing because that’s what I was on. I remember me and my sisters attempting 100s of times to beat Octavio in the original single player. the joy from hearing color pulse for the first time and seeing pearl and marina. I had the song playing as we were fighting Octavio.

Can’t forget seeing the octo expansion for the first time and rushing downstairs to buy it. Then all the videos I watched from snorth93 on YouTube when octo expansion was coming out listening to his theories curled up in a ball in the front of my room. Wishing octo expansion would come out.

Oh god I went crazy when “coming tomorrow” was announced. Of course I Can’t forget fighting for team order on final fest. (I still have my old art from then if anyone’s curious) I remember being in denial when splatoon 3 got revealed and quickly running like a track star to my phone to look up more when my sister showed me the trailer. Now here we stand in time, I’ve fought hard for team future, it was great fighting along so many people! Good job to everyone on future and the other teams!

3 paced back in forth in front of her usual seat in Alterna, the extra chilly air nor the aches caused by lack of sleep did little to deter this.

"4... she..she hasn't called or texted in weeks.. She's never missed a call not even at night." The squid sisters listed to the rambling of their captain, she was rarely so chatty or scared so they weren't going to brush this aside.

"Come on, remember she went with Off the Hook and 8 right? She's fine Cap.." Callie couldn't help but grimace seeing 3's worry for their girlfriend.

"Yeah weeks ago! We haven't heard from them either! Plus don't you remember you and have of Splatsville being unresponsive for a few days?!" 3 kicked the box they usually sat on then cluched their foot from the pain. She looked at Callie and Marie's blank states and sighed "Sorry... I'm just worried... I miss 4." Her voice whined almost patheticly as she spoke.

"We understand, don't worry okay? How about this, we go out looking for-" Marie was cut off by the high pitch yell of a nearby kettle, the one to enter Alterna specifically.

3 shot up to look over, the longing feeling in hee chest being pushed away by joy as she saw 4 standing there. The girl took a second to get her barring then spied 3 and dashed forth without hesitating. "3!"

3 was almost knocked over by the hug, which she returned tightly. "4... I missed you..." 3 spoke muffled into 4's shoulder.

"I.. missed you too 3." 4 pulled away from the hug and 3 let out a gasp seeing their face up close.

Marks of an electric burn were etched into her face. Her eyes seemed to be the leading point for this.

"What happened to you!?" 3 grabbed 4's head. Behind them Callie and Maire gasped as well.

4 was silent and fixed her gaze to the floor. 3 bit her lip, this seemed all to familiar...

"I.. think I can explain." Marina had appeared to, but hadn't been noticed. 3 glared up at Marina, stareing daggers into their soul at the idea she was responsible. Marina cleared her throat nervously.

"Well.. as you know I wanted 4's help with my Memverse project, it was meant to help the sanitized gain their memory's back.. but a Rouge AI was born from the wish for an unchanging world of the engineers that helped me... the AI know as order trapped me, Pearl 8 and 4 in the simulation. Since 4 was meant to be security for the spiral, order controled 4 used them as a sort of boss to keep 8 from stopping them... 8 manged to beat them a few times. I think that might've caused her real life headset to overload slightly and... burn 4 slightly."

4 stayed quiet as Marina explained, pulling herself closer to 3 who held them tighter in response.

"4 is..is. this true?"

She nodded. 3 felt a flurry of emotions hit her, rage, grief and slight relief that 4 was okay. Part of her wanted to stomp Marinas head in but.. she knew it wasn't their fault. It had always been one of 3's nightmares that 4 would be controlled as she was, being by an AI made it worse. She'd make sure that thing paid but for now...

"4 I was you to listen to me, I'm here for you. You are your own person and no one is going to take that from you okay? I promise." 3 spoke the words she wished were told to her. She also gave her signature glare at the others signaling them to leave which they did quickly.

"I..." 4 paused, the liquid from her tears soaking into 3's sleeve "I love you... please... stay with me for a while..." 3 squeezed her tighter.

"I love you too, and I won't be going anywhere... just like you did for me..." the two sat their unmoving. That was okay with 3, she wouldn't let 4 go through this hell alone.

Alright, now that the English version of the Now or Never Seven song is out, I'm gonna share my thoughts and analyze it a bit.

Spoilers ahead! In case you haven't listened to it yet, you can watch the video here. If you'd like to hear the song in-game first, I reccomend skipping the post entirely.

I'll get my general impressions on Three Wishes out of the way first and then share my analysis of the lyrics.

I really like how this song starts with the idols that are always on the left during the news singing, with the ones that are usually on the right following, and then all of them singing in unison! It's just really cool to hear!

I really enjoy how they've tackled the themes of past, present, and future in each of the idols' verses. My favourite would have to be Deep Cut's, though, as their verse tackles the future from an almosst folk tale-like perspective, which is very in character for Deep Cut and their music. I also love that each idol gets to showcase their individual singing styles in their groups respective verses. All of the harmonies that idols share in this song are lovely! It's just so great to hear all of their voices together like that. This one harmony they have in the end is the best one ,though. It's just so beautiful!

Now I wanna highlight some one-off things I like about some parts of this song.

I really enjoy Pearl's rap part! Her lines feel very in character for her, and I love that!

These Deep Cut lines are also very cute and sweet! They really show just how close their bond is!

Now, let's do some lyric analysis. All of this is just gonna be my thoughts and ideas. I can't know for sure what the exact intentions behind any of these lyrics was.

We're starting off with the Squid Sisters' verse.

"We've come far, you and I, on our journey" - This line to me seems to be a nod to the more mature characterization that the Squid Sister have in Splatoon 3. Alongside, naturally, acknowledging the fact that they're longstanding Splatoon characters.

"Did you think back then we'd be here? Guiding others in our shoes?" - This line feels like the Squid Sisters directly acknowledging the people right around them - Off the Hook and Deepcut - other idols, who were no doubt inspired by them. Besides that, this lyric also almost feels like an acknowledgment of all the octarians, who the Squid Sisters have guided with their performances of Calamari Inkantation.

"Words you write, line by line, showing us your sights. Passed down to us so we sing them today, we feel you still." - These lines seem to be a nod to Callie and Marie's heritage in the Calamari County, as well as Calamari Inkantation, as it is a song that was passed down onto Callie and Marie that they still sing to this day.

Now it's time for Off the Hook.

Let's get the obvious out of the way first. Here are all of the lyrics that show just how gay Pearl and Marina are for each other: "My brightly burning radiance drew you to me", "I've been searching, all of my life, finally I've found my north star. My heart's synced up, a satellite, orbiting wherever you are.", "With you, nothing can stand in my way", "Having you by my side makes today perfect."

The line "My heart's synced up, a satellite, orbiting wherever you are." could also be a reference to Off the Hook's space-themed Splatoon 3 outfits

Lastly, it's Deep Cut's verse.

Like I mentioned above, it seems to me that Deep Cut's lyrics here are very folklore inspired, and they talk about the future from this sort of fantastical fictional perspective.

Like, for example, the hardships that you may face in the future are seemingly likened to monsters and forces of evil in such lines as: "Till we reach the lair where evil lies in wait!" and "The monsters that we face ahead?".

Shiver and Frye seem to almost put themselves in the shoes of the hero of a folk story in these lyrics in general.

The use of the word journey in the line "What in the world could be at the journey's end?" makes me think of the hero's journey which is a common story structure in folk tales.

The line "What will we find in the land beyond the sands?" treats the future almost like a goal to be reached by the hero of a tale.

Whew, that's it, I think. All in all, I absolutely love this song, and I'm very excited to hear all the other Grand Fest music that will undoubtedly be a part of it!

haii :D okay so i'm not sure how familiar you are with splatoon so here's a few basic things to get out of the way first:

all of the music is diegetic, and is made by bands that exist in-universe!

each game has an "idol group", which is a group of in-universe celebrities who sort of act as the mascot for that game. whenever you open the game, there's a little news segment run by them where they tell you about any updates the game has gotten, what maps are in rotation, special events, if the biblically prophesied mutant salmon invasion is happening, etc! and they also do songs and stuff.

every, like, month or so, there's an event in the game called a Splatfest! basically, a question is asked, such as "Which is better? Cats or dogs?" and you pick a team, and then you will fight against the other team! this will last like 48 hours, and whichever team does better wins the splatfest and whatever option they chose is now legally the correct one! so if team cats won the "dogs vs cats" splatfest that would been cats are officially factually better than dogs forever

oh and also whenever there's a splatfest, each idol picks a different team, acting as a sort of mascot for that team

the games do not receive support forever, but they like to go out with a bang via a final splatfest! these are the biggest ones, and they actually have an influence on the NEXT game!

the first game's splatfests were run by the musical duo Callie and Marie Cuttlefish. they're called the Squid Sisters, because they're cousins. and the final splatfest in Splatoon 1 was Callie vs. Marie!

Marie won, so in the next game, Callie defected to the side of the enemy

Splatoon 2's splatfests were run by Pearl Houzuki and Marina Ida, who make up the band Off The Hook! they're also lesbiabs. the final splatfest of Splatoon 2 was Chaos vs. Order!

chaos won, so Splatoon 3 takes place in the mad max desert that was once known as france

Splatoon 3's splatfests are run by the musical group Deep Cut, consisting of Shiver Hohojiro, Frye Onaga, and Big Man:

you can guess which one is Big Man.

currently, the final splatfest of Splatoon 3 is happening. the Grand Festival!! it's the biggest one there's ever been!!!!!!

the theme is: "Which is most important to you? Past, present, or future?"

and for the first time, instead of each idol representing a specific team, each team is represented by an idol group from one of the games! Past is the Squid Sisters, Present is Off The Hook, and Future is Deep Cut.

for this splatfest, there is a completely new hub world!!!! the Grand Festival Grounds! and it's really really cool this splatfest is so insanely big :] there's a bunch of stands everywhere selling stuff, all of the characters are attending the festival, and there's three big stages at the venue where each of the idol groups can play.

they have fifteen fully animated choreographed performances involving lights and pyrotechnics and dance moves. all of their songs are like four minutes.

THAT IS A FULL HOUR OF FULLY ANIMATED CHOREOGRAPHED PERFORMANCES FOR THE FICTIONAL CELEBRITIES IN THE SILLY SQUID GAME.

that's also fifteen song remixes just for this event.

and this is only the beginning! this is the opening - this is phase 1. even more is to come on saturday night and i cannot WAIT. all of the idols have special Grand Festival outfits that they, noticably, are not wearing at the concerts!

(also look at how pearl and marina holding hands is the central point of the composition of this piece)

the new map they added to the game specifically for this splatfest, the Grand Splatlands Bowl, has not been used yet! and after we had to do a whole thing last week where we saved it from the salmon

there's a ton of other special little things but that's the grand gist of it! i hope this made sense!

My thoughts that no one asked for on final fest:

The trailer arguably goes so hard but honestly? I’m a bit disappointed. Idk if it’s just me but it feels so underwhelming?

For starters, it’s reusing a theme already done in both games. It’s fine if S3 reuses themes for less important monthly fests, but it feels real cheap to reuse it for the final fest ngl.

At first I was mad it wasn’t Idol v Idol v Idol, but then I remembered the final fests decide the next game’s plot, so I’m glad it isn’t just that. But now I’m mad at the fanbase deciding that it is idol v idol v idol. Present is in the lead rn just because so many people love OTH. Guys I get it I love pearlina too I adore the cephalopod lesbians but we need something different, I am begging. We’ve had enough of present timeline Splatoon.

On the one hand with past, we may get to see so much cool lore from events in the timeline like the great turf war, stuff with S3’s idol’s families, or even going even more in depth into octoling storylines and playing from an octarian perspective. However I fear it may lead to even more nostalgia bait like 3 is painfully oversaturated with. Splatoon isn’t even 10 years old as a franchise and we’ve had way too many callbacks in S3.

In future we may get to see what happens with the salmonids, how inklings and octolings finally realize they’ve been coexisting peacefully again, we may even get to see a fleshed out romance or even marriage between Pearl and Marina because it’s the future.

Both past and future also set up the possibility of a new playable species, be it a species that’s now extinct (past) or something newly discovered (future).

Present just doesn’t offer any of the cool benefits. The Splatoon formula is already getting stale, if we all pick present, nothing will change and we lose the chance to get something really innovative and cool that the other 2 have to offer.

Lastly I wanna rant about idol fit choices because what the hell were the designers thinking.

They look better in 3D in the trailer but I’m still not vibing with the fits. For such a colorful franchise, why is everyone in the same bland ugly off-white color? Especially after we just had side order, which is full of monochrome and off-white color palettes.

We could’ve had Callie and Marie in retro 80s clothes or even further back, 1800s clothes.

Pearl and Marina could’ve just popped off in more streetwear since for some reason the devs love putting them in that fashion style and that fashion style only.

I beat Splatoon 3: Side Order

I hate Splatoon multiplayer. I'm not great at it, and it gets me very heated, so I essentially avoid it after the first couple months, I make myself a character, all good to go.

I LOVE Splatoon singleplayer. So so so so so so much. Splatoon is essentially a singleplayer experience for me, and I am ok and content with that. I also love roguelikes! So when the DLC is a roguelike (with best idols as the feature), it's peak. Ignore the fact it took me a while to beat it that's how ADHD works. Anyways, I have a format that I think I've made now, so I'm going to do said format

Gameplay

Roguelike :)))))) I love these! I already said this! There's not much to say other than it certainly is a tower where I get more upgrades and create silly broken builds and I love that! Drone and Lucky Combo was my favorite cause I could just make inkstrike and special and bomb spam and nobody could stand a chance against me, it was super fun. Roller was my favorite weapon for this reason too (I also beat the tower with roller first so that might be part of it). The game def takes a few runs to really get going but like, I can't hold that against it?? That's what the genre is. You start to unlock shit and it starts to ramp up and that's the fun. I got frustrated at times on certain levels, and especially the rigorous ones on earlier runs get very very exhausting (I had to take a lot of breathers cause my hands would get sore), but that's not really like... a bad thing. I expect this genre to make me work. When I was going through with all of the different weapons, it was nice that each felt different enough, especially with the color biases, to make each run for 100% fresh (HA) feeling.

Murch was NOT cooking with his loadout though how the fuck does that dude play irl it took me so much fire speed up chips and changing his whole loadout to make that feel ANY good

Characters

Pearl and Marina :)))))))) They're my favorite idols. They're the best ones. I get more of them and even more Marina backstory and I'm not upset about it. Dedf1sh/Acht was a really cool addition and I'm glad they're expanding on characters that were previously just musicians. I found their whole shtick of "Thank god you're here Eight otherwise these two might just start making out in front of me and I can't handle that". It was funny. Order was a very cool force, and even as Smollusk with his stwupid wittle baby voice (DISCLAIMER: I ENJOYED IT) was a neat little character, just a program doing what it's supposed to do.

Story

The best part of this DLC's story is its worldbuilding and continuity from the last DLC expansion from 2. Seeing them acknowledge the Octoling society exodus, AND all of the sanitized people??? That's super cool! Marina showing off more of the skill they talk about constantly with her creating this whole program and working to fight against it is awesome. I appreciate how they tied the gameplay being constant runs into the story, each complete run giving you more and more details on what created Order, why everything is the way it is. Of course, that is also what makes it a little frustrating at the start, because you want to see the story but you have to play the game more to really get it going. It's what happens, so like, whatever, but I do wish for the story's sake alone I could have sped my progress up A LITTLE (the solution is to git gud).

Music

It's fucking Splatoon. Of course the music is peak. I loved the empty sounding songs, the evil printer techno, the super hype club beats while you are dying, it's hype! My favorite song was Parallel Canon :)

Everything Else

Part of the reason I love Splatoon is the ocean theming, I love sea creatures. I thought it was really cool how they made irl dying coral reefs into the theme, combining it with the digital and technology aspect of grayscaling, it's such a cool combination of theming that only Splatoon can do. Speaking of, the attention to detail in this DLC (and really the series as a whole) is INCREDIBLE. The app icons, the programs Marina using being actually recognizable as real programs, the demonstrations showing off character with the silly little anime eyes, there's just so much to look at in every point. The text and writing has also always been a strength of Splatoon, and Side Order just continues to deliver. I loved all the enemy names being musical terms, the puns are always great, the extra dialogue in the menus as you unlock and kill enemies, and even Overlorder's title changing as you do more runs??? It's so cool and it all gives you more motivation to continue to play more. This game is a charming joy with one of the most unique settings I've seen, and the DLC just gives me more of what I love.

10/10. Continued supply of Splatoon and Roguelike goodness with a jelle-ton of charm (I'm funny!)

I rly dont care for how Frye Shiver and BigMan were introduced in the single player mode. It honestly felt like they were just tossed in with no reel (fish joke) point to them being there. With Splat1 and Splat2 you get to know agent 1 and 2 as they are helping you (or being rescued from a certain octoling) and then with octo expansion you got to know marina and pearl. with Deep Cut it just felt rushed? Superficial? Plus like. what happened to agent 4 and 8, i wish they were mentioned even in passing.

i have a few gripes about splatoon 3 and that may be tied to emotional things, but i rly do wish we got a better chance at knowing deep cut on a deeper level. also i wanna know how new agent 3 got lil buddy? esp since we still go after salmonids in splat3.

okay since i finally beat side order half a year late in the span of a day, here is my personal thoughts on it, and what i liked vs what i didnt like:

it was. okay. but nowhere near as good as octo expansion. my main problem is that i feel like they didnt do enough with it. like the story is so minimal. it's like…. that's it?

i was hoping they would go more into eight's history and trauma and all that. and they did reference that a little bit, but only ever in hints. but then again i havent beaten the post-game yet so i could be wrong

also i kept hearing people talking about how hard it was, but for me personally it didnt feel nearly as hard as octo expansion but maybe thats just because ive been playing splatoon for a long time so i've gotten better at the game since i played octo expansion

i did love the visuals though. so pretty. and ngl one of my fave parts of the game was asynchronous rondo. because it seems that that boss is supposed to represent tartar. and also its design and song that plays during it was SO fucking cool

i just think the game has a great concept, but the story did not deliver. also the gameplay is too repetitive after a while. maybe im just biased and have too high expectations though because octo expansion is my favorite game of all time (yes im counting it as its own standalone game because it basically is)

at least this made me appreciate splatoon 3's main campaign better. because at least that one had fun story, lore, and banter, even if the ending and villain being a blatant octo expansion ripoff was disappointing

what i disliked about the game: -poor writing, not enough story -it just feels so… hollow. there isn't the emotional investment in it that was present in octo expansion -wished it delved more into 8's and marina's psychology instead of only doing that in hints and implications -while there is some funny and unique dialougue like in octo expansion, it feels like there isn't that much. i kinda ended up skipping through most conversations because they were pretty bland, and weren't nearly as entertaining as the banter in octo expansion -it kinds gets really repetitive and boring after a while, especially compared to octo expansion where every level is super different. it needs more level variety and types of objectives imo -the ones where you gotta kill all those sunfish things are WAY too easy. all you need to do is speedrun getting enough points for a special and then you can just one-shot them all lol -i wish there were more bosses, because going against the same ones over and over gets tedious really quickly -why isn't there an infinite mode? i want to challenge myself to see how high a floor i can get :{ -wish it went more into dedf1sh, because it feels like they're just kinda. there. doing nothing. for the entire story. kinda wasted potential. you could remove them from the game and nothing would change -when will tartar (my fave character) return from the war it's one of my fave villains of all time oughhh.. the closest we got was asynchronous rondo. and also the main villain which is yet again an obvious tartar expy

my thoughts on the splatoon game i never got to play

I never got to play splatoon 1, as splatoon 2 was when I officially started playing, but that doesn't mean I don't hold nostalgia for it. I watched Chuggaaconroy's splatoon series about it, which i think was my first introduction to the idea of splatoon. I can't remember the exact moment where I decided I wanted to play it, but I do remember silently wishing to swap out my Wii for a Wii U so I could play some of the exclusive games like pikmin 3, super mario 3d world, and of course, the original splatoon. At that point I think i already played splatoon 2, and wanted to play the story mode of splatoon 1 because i really liked the story modes. I think my friend had it, but I never got to play on her wii u before she moved. Even without ever actually getting to play splatoon 1, i still feel a sadness of an era passing on. All the people who were introduced to splatoon that way. All the people that watched Chuggaaconroy's videos and perhaps used his tips and tricks for the weapons. All the people who never got to play it, yet watched it anyways. And now one of the biggest features of splatoon is getting discontinued. No more messing around with your friends. no more finding random hackers. No more playing online or getting to level up or even use the weapons or gear you unlocked in story mode. And I feel sad. Even though I never got to experience any of the gameplay. Its strange, yet also sad knowing if i ever do get my hands on the game i'll never be able to play online. Splatoon 1 may be old. It may be buggy. It may be full of hackers sometimes. But it holds memories, and it was many people's first introduction to the world of splatoon. Without it, we would have never gotten Splatoon 2, Octo Expansion, Splatoon 3, or Side Order. We would have never seen Agent 4, Agent 8, Neo 3, Pearl and Marina, Shiver, Frye, Big Man, and all the character inbetween. We wouldn't have gotten the Splatoon series' good story, or awesome music. Splatoon 1 was a gateway to a very fun and creative fandom. So even though I never got to play. I want to say goodbye to the original Splatoon. For all that it did for me and others, and for the ideas it inspired.
