Sometimes all I want is the quiet. After a year of ups and downs feeling very introspective towards fandom, I found a lot of comfort in contemplative fics featuring the sea. They take me by the hand and get me immersed in a beautiful, mysterious setting in a way that I find deeply soothing, and even cathartic. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels instantly drawn to this theme, so I made a short rec list with some of my favorite titles. May September be kind and healing to us all. Enjoy!

But Potter is also in need of a Healer willing to keep his secrets, and Draco is just the man for the job. It’s a perfectly reasonable exchange. They need only attend a couple parties arm-in-arm, smile nicely for the paparazzi, and tolerate each other long enough to convince everyone they’re smitten. In return, Draco will keep Potter alive and in one piece. But it isn’t long before Draco realises he might be in over his head, because Potter is ten tonnes of trouble packed into a leather jacket, and seems keen on hurtling himself towards death on the back of a flying motorbike. And that says nothing of Potter’s penchant for fire-breathing beasts and things that bite. Ah well, at least they’ll have some fun while it lasts. After all, Draco always did like a bit of danger.

Ever wondered what Harry and Draco might get up to if they visited your country? Maybe you’re longing for a holiday (who isn’t?) or want to wallow in nostalgia about your favourite destination. Here I present the solution! Inspired by @the-starryknight’s Drarry Round The World challenge and @graymatters’ fabulous Big Bang fic set in Alaska, I’ve put together four reclists of fics featuring our favourite boys abroad.

A few notes on the lists: all the fics are >1.5k words (ish), the first three lists feature fics with a single or primary destination, and I did not include AUs eg. Beauxbatons!Draco. When putting these lists together I tried to select fics where the country in question is explored/described in detail and integral to the story (so ‘resort abroad’ stories may not be included). Hi! Firstly, thank you so much for all you do. This account is amazing! I was hoping you could help me find a post war fic published on ao3. It starts out with a Hogwarts reunion of sorts. Harry and Draco go to the grounds and then have sex against a tree. And I remember one of them mentions the bark scratching their back in a good way. I think Harry is supposed to be writing a memoir and lives in a remote area. Draco comes and they go fly fishing. I think Draco fishes on a boat and Harry goes.

Happy Friday, and welcome to Happy Hour, the part of the week where I tell you about a fic that’s made me happy this week!

I Am Not Who I Became by mab_di (93,189 words, rated E)

Draco left England after the trials and has travelled the world meeting wizards and Muggles from different cultures and with vastly different relationships to magic, each other, and the natural world. Now he's a fisherman in Finland on commercial vessels. Harry has been struggling since the war and has become a recluse while trying to write his autobiography. An invitation to the Hogwarts class of 1998's 15th reunion isn't welcomed by either of them, but neither could predict how the night, and their reunion, will upend their lives.

I have a special place in my heart for one-shots, but I also love the feeling of immersion that happens with a long fic. This fic definitely hits that- not just immersion in the story itself but also in the setting and especially in the details about commercial fishing. The characterizations of Harry and Draco were unexpected to me, but never felt out of place and was ultimately a refreshing take on their personalities and relationship. I loved the magical world building aspects and the overviews we saw of other magical communities and the possibilities of how magic could be used in tandem with non-magical communities and jobs. I also appreciated the careful way that this fic dealt with heavier subjects such as depression and suicidal thoughts, showing the realistic ways that past trauma can catch up to the present but never in a way that felt like it was glorifying or voyeuristic.

If you’ve got some time to invest in a fic, I really enjoyed losing myself a bit into this one and think you will too.
