I feel awful asking this but. im a physically and mentally disabled trans man who is financially struggling recently. i am on SSDI and can only do so much with art as extra income every month

im paying off medical bills (major surgery and ER visit) still, and help out my family a lot with bills (my part of mortgage every month, as well as others as needed). i am unable to do work beyond art commissions and my etsy shop, which will both open back up soon

im just scared in the case that either I or my customer might accidentally need to pay an extra hefty custom fee of some sort and I WOULD CRY IF ANYONE HAS TO DO THAT SO;;;; it has happened before and thankfully the person who bought from me didnt mind and expected the fee but I FELT SO BAD??? apologies for that issue;;; you might have to do a roundabout way where a friend you know can ship it over to you as a personal package but i doubt that’s worth the trouble….

heyyyy okay so i never rlly post stuff like this so im gonna get to the point. i’m a student and i’m trying to quit my job. i’m barely getting paid and my hours are terrible. so i just opened up an etsy store to sell kandi and my patches. it’s mostly gonna be mcr, fallout boy, and like bandom stuff as of rn bec thats what i enjoy making atm. but i also have some silly supernatural patches and like general fandom stuff im gonna put up in a little bit. it is very bare as of rn but i’ll be adding more over the next few days. i would really appreciate it if you would consider making an order but genuinely reblogging and getting this post around would mean A LOTTTT to me!!! some life updates n shit (positive)

Hi hi!! its been a while since i posted any original art or some of my regular ramblings, but some stuff happened and i wanted to share with yall that follow me for content (or shitposts idc, or maybe ur a friend who hasnt heard of me for a while, hi hii!!)

well first of all, ya boy got accepted into college!!! wahoo!! im gonna do animation and im so very excited for it!! but that also means that i will be, for the next few months until i start classes, preparing a lot, i wont go deep into it but it will be a lot of shit to get done lol, also it means that i will be accepting commissions far less frequently (something like one every few months instead of multiple every month) art as a whole will be slower than it usually is, with school being my priority my free time will most likely be dedicated to art for myself rather than working on commissions for someone else

second of all, i plan on opening a shop!!! it will be very small at first, i only got a few sticker designs so far and i will be test printing real soon (havent decided where to set up shot yet tho, im torn between etsy and big cartel) i plan on eventually expanding into pins, keychaind and more!! if all goes well, i will be attending comic con experience in são paulo by the end of the year!!(HOPEFULY WITH THE SHOP!!! IM ALREADY LOOKING INTO GETTING THE TABLE RESERVATION)

this year i have a lot planned, maybe not all goes as i want it to go but i will do my damn best to get as right as possible!!! i want to save up some money so that i can realize my dream of visiting friends in the US and going to tfcon some time in 2024!!

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Hey, hey, gonna be redesigning my tumblr soon and prob ( ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ or maybe not, we both know im bad at this) gonna start to post more art and semi-regularly, if not regularly. Reguardless, I have a bit of news!

I am going to be working on a few bigger projects! I have started to work on my original comic again and have about 16 pages sketched out now and an actual plot behind it. I'm pretty hyped about this, honestly :)

Ive crocheted 4 hats now!!! Technically 4.5 but im thinking about unraveling that one anyway bc like. It's expensive, soft, nice yarn and idk i want to do smth Special w it, or smth. Uhh and now im like. I want to try to actually make smth off a Pattern (bc so far ive been just following youtube video tutorials) and id like to do smth pretty and fancier etc. Unfortunately i uhhhh struggle to read crochet patterns and understand them and i get overwhelmed very quickly by them and give up. I have one in mind i want to try again later today thats like a pretty lacey shawl and i think i have enough of this one yarn to do it? We will see.

I also want to try other things and bigger things. But im begrudgingly realizing i dont actually have enough of any one type of yarn to do a lot of projects? Grumpy about that lol. Also, trying to keep myself in check and recognizing that im feeling way too ambitious about some things lol. I should try new things and step out of my comfort zone and try to make things, yes, but i need to be realistic and try to tackle no more than like 2 projects at a time i think bc ill get overwhelmed prolly?

...also i think i need to get a yarn needle, or check the sewing kit we have and see if there's one in there? Ive been getting by on projects that use one without one but like thats getting more and more intimidating

OH ALSO i had a bundle or whatever of soft, pretty, expensive, 100% alpaca wool yarn that got super tangled earlier this yr and i was beginning to think the only way id get it untangled was if i CUT it which i didn't want to do but GUESS! What i did last night. I fucking got it, i untangled it, im so proud of me. Nice. Semi related but ive been thinking about unraveling some of the things ive made out of the alpaca wool i have bc like...like i wasted all this nice pretty soft yarn on a useless hyperbolic crochet. Its very pretty and soft and it was good practice and i dont regret making it but i do regret fastening it off and now not being able to use that yarn to make smth pretty and soft and nice thats for me that i can WEAR, yknow?

Also the first scarf i made, id. Id like to undo it i think and use the yarn for smth else if i can bc even tho im glad i finished it and made it and got all that practice, and i dont regret making it, i do think its hideous and i dont think im ever gonna wear it. And also i regret that it went in the washing machine and then mistakenly got put into the tumble dryer and now its kinda like..felted i think is the term? So im wondering if its even possible to undo that and salvage the yarn for something Else? (Does anyone know? If i can undo an alpaca wool crochet project that got a little felted from one run in the dryer and salvage the yarn?)

How does an artist whose never really posted art online go about making a successful online store the same way you have? I'm not sure how to even start, do you open a store and pray? Get an endorsement from another artist? Am I gonna need a twitter? I guess im just looking for any tips, if you're willing to share. (BTW I got a a few of the holo skull stickers, ADORE them!)

I think the first thing you need to ask yourself is - how much effort do I want/have time to put into this? ((*For reference, my store would be categorized under upper-medium/high effort as I am doing art full-time))

Low Effort - POD service (print-on-demand) such as RedBubble, Society6, Teepublic (you upload your work, they handle everything else.)

PROS: They handle everything from site listings, product photos, product creation, packaging, shipping & handling, and customer support. They have brand reputation so people trust the site & your products. Offer a lot of custom printing (shirts, pillows, blankets, mugs etc) that would be pretty expensive trying to do yourself starting out. Very little involvement besides uploading your work & sharing it to your followers. 

CONS: Artists only receive a very small percentage per sale and it might take quite a while to earn anything substantial. Product quality varies (RedBubble sticker quality is hot garbage imo) as they are usually cheaply produced. A lot of stolen artwork/designs are sold on these sites and nothing is done to regulate it.

Medium Effort: Online marketplaces such as Storenvy, Etsy, Shopify etc. A PLATFORM for you to sell your goods - you are responsible for creating, packaging, shipping & marketing your products. 

PROS: Convenient marketplace shopping allows people to easily browse your store alongside other vendors/artists. Allows you to brand your own store & products so that they are uniquely yours. A true “small business” as you are handling essentially everything except for the online store-hosting platform. Allows you to include personal notes/touches or freebies in your orders as you are packaging & shipping them yourself. 

CONS: Usually have to pay a fee for every sale/listing. Website/Storefront design are limited to what the platform has to offer (some don’t have custom HTML options). Requires YOU to create your own merch - whether it’s original art, prints, stickers, enamel pins etc - which means a lot of time spent talking to manufacturers, figuring out shipping rates etc. Can involve a lot of $$ investment upfront.

High Effort / Full-Time: Creating your own website/storefront OR Patreon Clubs. Handling everything yourself & releasing new content quite frequently - good for artists with a following/brand reputation/full-time. 

Basically everything from the ‘Medium Effort’ tier but requiring quite a bit of time/effort (usually) daily. Monthly Patreon clubs are becoming pretty common - backers pledge every month for a ‘tier’ level and receive merch at the end of the month (which requires you to factor in manufacturing time, shipping time to you, packaging & then shipping to the customer which can be difficult for people who suck at meeting deadlines ((sometimes me but I'm working on it))

Honestly there is no “correct way” to go about creating a shop for yourself. I know a lot of artists who run their own stores & also have merch on RedBubble/Society6 as it’s just another revenue stream that’s quite low-key and the more visibility you have as a ‘brand’ the better. Some artists have shop openings with their store only being open for a week or two and then closed for a couple months and then re-open again (youtuber BayleeJae does this & is quite successful at it) 

There’s honestly so many factors that go into a store - what kind of merch/art you want to create, what your fanbase is, who you’re marketing to, how much funds you want to invest etc etc. It can be quite overwhelming which is why I really recommend those just starting out to start slow/small and test the waters with just a few items first before rushing in and spending a bunch of $$$$ on products that might not end up selling as well as you hoped.

Since you said you don’t really post online - I would suggest starting with a LOW EFFORT store like RedBubble, Society6, TeePublic etc and really focus on building your social media following & presence. Make sure your social accounts all have same/similar handles (mine vary a lil but it’s always ‘Climb’). Posting frequently can be hard but it’s really important to start getting people to notice you & gain interest in your work.

yes!!! i bought precut book nook pieces on etsy for starters. 

but watch tutorials on youtube. as many as you can on what you’re wanting to make. keep in mind, the tutorial doesn’t have to be about a book nook, it could just be a diorama or model!!! 

i keep up with lots of d&d accounts who make and paint miniatures and diorama pieces!! ‘black magic craft’ is a fave account, he does things using cheap materials and it all looks amazing!! the point of his acc is showing you how to do things the cheaper way but can still look amazing!

think outside the box, don’t limit yourself. look around in local craft and hobby stores at different things and see what jumps out at you. 

def have fun with it!! they are a lot of fun to make and it’s like therapy for me tbh. 

and i will post my book nooks soon, but since im wanting to open an etsy shop for commissions i don’t want to post them yet!! but if anyone wants to see them you can def message me off anon!!
