see its the same issue i have with genloss and horror. and not to bring up genloss again and get a wave of people blocking me for it. but like. its the same issue! i understand that dsmp was a lot of peoples first fandom experience and naturally this will bleed through into the tangentially related medias. but like. its SO painfully obvious a lot of people have just. Never Actually Experienced any better movies/shows/books. and its really sad! bc theres so many awesome things out there and its just upsetting to see people place these mediocre 20-somethings men on pedestals expecting perfection from them because they will ALWAYS be disappointed. genuinely in the nicest possible way i can say this. some of you just need to go read a book written by a woman. or watch an ap show run by queer folks. go listen to spirits or pale blue pod who are run by really smart really funny professional women. go read the murderbot diaries which explores identity in a way i have genuinely never experienced before in a piece of fiction and includes crazy awesome sci-fi action and environments and also uses neopronouns in a way that is so nonchalant and casual that i didnt even notice them at first. if youre set on youtubers/streamers. go watch holly hollowtones or penny snapcube who are extremely funny and talented and creative trans women and have equally as funny and creative friend groups. like. theres so many better things out there.

Stupidest thing to happen to me on twitter was when people were coming onto MY post that I made defending the dsmp, telling other people to not make it about Dream bc he contributed nothing LIKE MF ITS MY POST !! Defending Dream is ALWAYS allowed on all my posts like who tf even are you 😭😭
It’s also funny bc the only people even bringing Dream up were people shitting on him for “not contributing” to the dsmp or whatever like no one except for antis were even making my post about him like idfk who they’re even yelling at

cyclical violence & the dsmp finale
I’m seeing a lot of folks on Twitter interpret the DSMP series 1 finale as “can you believe they forced an abuse victim to befriend his abuser in the end, that’s so sick and tasteless!!” and after a bit of pondering (i.e. absolutely rabid conversations with @ringenthusiast) I think I’ve realized why that interpretation bothers me. Personally I find it extremely reductive to read DSMP as being solely about abuse rather than as a story in which abuse happens and is explored, but even if you’re only prepared to consume it solely as an abuse narrative, you absolutely must acknowledge that the story is about both interpersonal and systemic abuses, and moreover that it’s about how interpersonal and systemic abuse enable each other.
c!Tommy is a victim of horrific interpersonal abuse. c!Dream is a victim of horrific systemic abuse. c!Dream is the perpetrator of the interpersonal abuse c!Tommy suffers, and his abuse of c!Tommy is later continually used as a justification (both in canon and in fandom) for why c!Dream deserves to suffer systemic abuse. This isn’t a coincidence, it’s clearly a very well-planted and thoroughly developed overarching theme: abuse is cyclical. Abuse perpetuates itself. One type of abuse perpetuates and enables other forms of abuse. That’s the point.
There are plenty of examples of this theme being explored outside of the “Dream vs. Tommy” conflict -- the instance that immediately comes to mind is c!Quackity being treated terribly by c!Schlatt, only to turn around and torture an incarcerated person, ostensibly for profit but also presumably for personal enjoyment. Again, abuse is cyclical. This is actually why I think it’s really important that c!Tommy and c!Quackity are, in a sense, set up as foils for each other. c!Quackity makes the decision to become as bad as (if not worse) than his abuser, and that decision is a source of strength and agency for him even though the audience is expected to understand it as a downward spiral. c!Tommy’s approach is different, after he sees c!Dream’s perspective from limbo. It has to be different because c!Tommy is different.
It’s kinda wild to me that anyone could watch the DSMP finale (not to mention the past two years of the show) and not see the final interaction between c!Tommy and c!Dream as a representation of restorative justice. You are not obligated to fix, forgive, or offer redemption to someone who hurt you... but you are obligated to at least try to see them as a person, because the alternative can and will enable atrocities.
This is both a positive ending for c!Tommy and a very uplifting message to end series 1 on. Remember what I said earlier about c!Quackity and c!Tommy being narrative foils? Well, they certainly are, at least insofar as the theme of cyclical abuse is concerned. c!Quackity is an abuse victim who becomes an abuser. That’s an arc that makes sense for his character and personally, as a longtime c!Quackity stan I’m happy with it... but it would be super depressing if that was how every abuse plotline in the series turned out. The final interaction between c!Tommy and c!Dream offers an alternative outcome: that abuse victims are not obligated to forgive or attempt to understand their abusers, but in some cases it’s worth it to try. The abuse c!Tommy suffered makes him neurotic and angry and depressed and fearful and paranoid, but he never lets it make him unkind. He never becomes an abuser himself. The message is clear: abuse can be cyclical, but it doesn’t always have to be. You can break the cycle. The snake doesn’t always have to swallow its own tail.
That, to me, is an incredibly meaningful ending.

It’s that time again! It’s c!Sapnap (and c!Karlnapity) during Manberg era brain rot again!
(All names are referencing the characters, regardless of if I add c! or not. No cc! are mentioned in this post).
c!Sapnap was directly loyal to c!Dream, but he wasn’t employed by the Greater Kingdom like the Knights of Eret. Whenever Dream went to meet with Schlatt for politics stuff, Sapnap would go along as Dream’s personal guard. (Even though Sapnap was aware of Dream’s visits to Pogtopia, he stayed in Manberg to spend time with his fiancé, Karl.)
c!Sapnap thought c!Quackity was an asshole at first. Sapnap really only knew about Quackity through George, and he wasn’t particularly impressed by George’s descriptions. Sapnap’s impression only got worse when Wilbur and Tommy were exiled. Sapnap rarely ever interacted with the Manberg cabinet anyway because Schlatt would kick everyone out of the room when Dream visited. Sapnap would wait by the door, but the rest of them would scatter to catch up on work.
Sapnap wasn’t fond of c!Karl decision to move to Manberg. Karl originally moved to Manberg for work and “to experience new horizons”. c!Sapnap chose to stay in the Greater Kingdom, partly for work and partly because he just didn’t like Manberg. This postponed their wedding date from “sometime in autumn” to “indefinite”.
Sapnap and Karl used to have “drinks nights” where they would sit at home and cozy up with some new hot drink Karl was trying. Usually it was a new tea blend, typically iced tea during the summer. On colder days, it was coffee or a special recipe for hot chocolate. When Karl moved to Manberg, Sapnap was only able to visit during daylight hours, crammed within his busy schedule (courtesy of Dream), so they didn’t have date nights as often anymore.
Karl was the first new citizen of Manberg., and c!Quackity was the one to directly host Karl’s citizenship test. They immediately hit it off. c!Karl was just a random citizen of Manberg that c!Quackity would find solace in during the worst times in the Manberg cabinet. Once a week, Quackity would spend his lunch break (which he usually doesn’t even bother to take the rest of the week) at Karl’s to try out some new tea blend or drink recipe. They were always tooth achingly sweet.
Sapnap was wary of Quackity, but he was absolutely enamored by Karl’s rambling prose about the Vice President. Sapnap could tell that Karl was falling in love with Schlatt’s husband, and Sapnap honestly couldn’t say that was a bad thing. He saw how Schlatt mistreated his cabinet when Schlatt had guests, and he could only assume the worst when there weren’t prying eyes.
When Dream suddenly switched sides after some mystery deal with Schlatt, Sapnap was very vocally against it. He still fought by c!Dream’s side though and was granted full command of Manberg’s soldiers. Sapnap wasn’t very keen on giving them a fighting chance, not when he was quietly rooting for Pogtopia. (He had been craving bloodshed though, so he still put in the effort.)
After c!Quackity shot c!Schlatt and ran away to Pogtopia, Karl decided to join Schlatt’s cabinet when everyone else abandoned ship. He constantly undermined Schlatt’s orders, purposely fucked with the paperwork, and actively sabotaged everything. Sapnap was leading the crumbling Manberg military, so no one dared to call Karl out. Karl was very proud of that.
Sapnap and Karl had an open relationship throughout their entire time together. Sapnap had been in QPR with Dream and George since forever, but Karl was actively polyamorous. They had never had a third together though.
Apparently, Quackity never knew Karl was engaged to Sapnap despite their long term engagement being a hot topic among the mass populous of the Greater Kingdom. Karl had taken that little tidbit for granted, not realizing that Quackity had never lived in the Greater Kingdom and therefore was not exposed to its rumors and gossip articles.
c!Sapnap was very understanding of Quackity’s upset at the revelation. Although he didn’t have the best first impression of Quackity, he was aware Quackity made Karl happy. Much like that first day with Karl, Quackity and Sapnap immediately got along (sometimes at Karl’s expense), so Karl offered up a relationship between all three of them.
It just felt right with the three of them, so they decided to close their relationship. (Then George got pulled in as a queerplatonic fourth after Dream abandoned him and Sapnap).

this dsmp fic im writing rn is being fueled by three things - ghost and pals - a dream i had a few nights ago - my Extremely Normal friend
side effects of listening to ghost and pals entire discography on repeat may include losing sight of the individual, becoming deranged, wearing socks to sleep, eating rocks, uncanny relaxation, mental regression to year 2021 AD, and Ear Worms
bwuh i should put this on my oc/writing blog but it goes on my ramblin blog instead for fandom reasons. anyway im being soooo normal and my brain chemistry is not being altered at all
this fic is going to be my very first multichap ever (since like...middle school) which im excited about
im alsooooo making it my love letter to dreams (plural) (the concept) (of dreaming) (when youre asleep) (the experience of vivid hallucinations) (while asleep) (not the guy or the character or the server for that matter) i love dreaming i love dreams i love how uncanny they are i love how they distort reality into something that still holds truth at its core but never in the way you expect i love the brain i love that when i sleep im still alive

“If you’re a critical dsmp fan that’s okay” is a really weird take to me just because it’s like.... what is there other than the stuff to criticize really? I feel like when you critically consume content the point of that is that there is something of concrete value that outweighs the subject of criticism.
What is there of substance here it’s just racist weirdos goofing around in minecraft? You can find way better SMPs. Hell get your friends to make minecraft stories with you they’re just way more interesting than whatever these sentient bottles of mayonnaise are coming up with

DSMP Hybrids - Part 1
- Demon Hybrids
✦ For my DSMP headcanons of hybrids on the server, I decided to work a bit on the anatomy and characteristics of each species, starting by Demons!
Note: There's a difference for full-blood demons, such as cBad and the others; I'll be focusing mainly on the hybrids rather than the full demons.
⤷ During the time I made this drawing I had only worked on 3 demon hybrids: cEryn, cTommy and cSapnap, however I was reminded that Tina confirmed her character to be a demon, so she too is a demon hybrid in my headcanons (I'll be working on her design later!)
HYBRIDS CHARACTERISTICS
⤷ Demon Hybrids have very similar characteristics in general: As beings with demon blood, they all are born with long tails and horns, with different sizes depending on their sex. They have long ears and scales around their body, that can be more or less proeminent depending on the person;
Although my first three designs have all different shades of red and black, these hybrids can also have dark shades of blue and purple (such as cTina);
⤷ For demon hybrids, their sex can affect their physiognomy. Some of the charistics I worked on were:
For AMAB hybrids: They have longer tails with sharper tips and small horns;
For AFAB hybrids: Their tails are smaller with a round tip and bigger horns;
So, what about my cTommy design? I headcanon cTommy as an intersex person (He/She) which leads to him as having mixed traits from both sexes (Long tail with sharper tip and big horns); I'd like to point that hybrids can be born with traits of the other sex, although that's not cTommy's case :)
Demon Hybrids in general also very some strong fire resistence (they're not immune, just resistent), besides other quirks such as: Better eyesight at night and better hearing than humans.
Their hybrid organs are also essential for them: their tails are very important for balance and sense of spacial perception, whilst their horns are related to their hearing, so damadging those parts could cause serious injuries - Example: cTommy got her horns destroyed during cDream's beating in prison, and although they were restored on revival, she's deaf on her left ear, besides injuries on his tail during exile, she gets clumsier after that.
So yeah, they're definitely not decorations but functional organs.
cTina also has serious injuries on her horns, making her almost completely deaf on both ears;
For cEryn, he's one of the few hybrids that doesn't have any scales around his body like cTommy and cSapnap do;
Some background information: Demon Hybrids aren't exactly common, so for all of them on the server meeting each other was kind of a surprise, maybe less for cTommy as he met cEryn during his childhood, but yeah, still a bit rare.
That'll be it for now for the demon hybrids. I plan on working on cTina's design once I'm done on the Bovidae hybrids (cTubbo, cPuffy and cSchlatt)
Thanks for those who read this! :>

You've been reblogging more stuff about female characters getting ignored by fandoms recently and I would be really curious to hear your full views on the topic.
The thing is that... look. I get it. Many fandoms do not have very many women in their canon, many of those women are treated pretty poorly by the canon or aren't given as much depth as their male peers, and if you're at all picky the pickings are kind of slim (I would love to be a fan of c!Niki, if I were able to watch six-hour vods, which I am not). It is not wrong that most works with large fandoms are really, really sexist, and the problem is not just in the fanbase!
But come the fuck on. It is not an accident that the DSMP and the MCU and BNHA, all of which are vast-majority male and the female characters are treated terribly, are megafandoms, and Revolutionary Girl Utena is eligible for yuletide. It is not wrong that if you want to see more female-character-focused fanwork you should go to Sailor Moon and not The Untamed, but it is also kind of missing the point to say that and not look at the difference in size between those fandoms. People can say "it's because the male characters are so often more interesting and have more meaningful interactions," and like, sometimes that's even true, I will be the first to tell you that quackbur has more to it than tinarose, but please compare the Clint/Coulson tag to the Utena/Anthy tag and look me in the eye and tell me that's the only thing driving the trend. With a straight face.
And even more there's a thing where— so, I was a mod in the @ao3topshipsbracket bracket. And femslash ships, once they were in the bracket, did really well. Like, absurdly well, like 80% of the f/f ships entered got to the top 16, and the last one was against blackbonnet which was never gonna lose in round 1. You might notice something about that number, though, which is that there were only five of them entered total, because people love to vote for femslash but they absolutely will not write it. And they won't say anything about it either! I was watching the activity feed the entire tournament, and I can tell you, for all of the "let's go lesbians" that populated our notes, nobody would say anything that was actually about the specific characters who made up their ship. I learned a lot about Naruto fandom, modding that bracket; I still know nothing about CW Supergirl, because the only thing anyone would say about it is "it has women in it". Because women are interchangeable. Because women are avatars of Being A Good Feminist. Because clicking a button is easy, and actually thinking about any specific woman and her traits and her internality is hard.
The thing is that guilt over misogyny does not actually fix misogyny. It gets you a lot of people who vote for women in polls, and who say "he's like a woman to me" about their male faves but notably don't have any canonically female characters they talk about, and who say that the only thing they care about in a fic is if it has women in it but will not ever actually say anything about any specific woman, and who never shut up about yuri but apparently yuri is everything and anything except women who have feelings about one another.
I'm tired! I'm very tired. I want people to actually give a shit about specific women and their specific traits, which do not begin and end with "woman". And, also, to stop treating women exclusively as the wingmen, advice-givers, mom figures, and accessories of men.

Streamer!Ellie HCs
Tumblr media
content warning:: fem!reader, modern!AU, mentions of getting hurt
AN:: Another headcannons, who would’ve thought? Streamer!Ellie was literally the reason I started writing. Enjoy :)
Tumblr media
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who started streaming as a joke. Jesse was already a streamer and he constantly said she’d be good at it, so why not?
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who at first had such a shitty setup. No webcam, mic barely working and her PC couldn’t handle minecraft with shaders.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who randomly went from 30 viewers average to almost 10k one day. Just blew up overnight.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who gets canceled at least once a week. She just says dumb shit without thinking and has to apologize after. and people are just fucking weird.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who lives off of snacks and won’t eat a proper meal if you don’t cook anything. She’s just always on that grind😎🔥
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who’s entire personality on camera is just a character. Screams and throws herself off of her chair on camera but goes non verbal every time she’s in private.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who mostly streams games, especially minecraft & fortnite. She might make an irl stream once in a blue moon, but don’t expect it to be good.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who loves her community and wants to talk to them more often but always ends up swearing and arguing with random people in chat.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who gets copyright strikes and warnings from twitch admins almost every stream. Most of the times she doesn’t even know what she did wrong.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who keeps your relationship a secret. She’s scared you’d get a ton of hate. (You would) ((Streamer fanbases are awful))
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who buys the most random things she can ‚for the lulz’. Whether it’s for her streaming room or bedsheets, she’s buying the weirdest option. (This made me think of her)
Tumblr media
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who is definitely a hey mamas girl.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who majorly fucked up and showed her personal instagram account (with your pictures) by accident. Her following went up by 10k almost instantly and she ended up deleting it:/
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who after that mistake took a hiatus for almost 3 weeks. I mean- logged out of every account she had and didn’t check any socials for that time.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who came back to streaming thinking she’d get all the hate in the world but people were just joking that ‚she’s too much of a loser to have a pretty girlfriend’.
they were also surprised she was lesbian. She never talked about her private life on stream, not even once.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ In my mind she’s the female version of 2019/2020 Quackity. Is he still relevant? idk
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who jokes about selling feet pics and bath water a little too often for your liking.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who once did a handstand for a 100 bucks. Ended up breaking her arm in two places and she couldn’t play games for almost two months.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who gets hurt on stream so often she got flagged for self harm. Apologized on twitter though:)
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who definitely thinks loud=funny.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who finds out she’s in some kind of drama every single time she opens twitter. It’s always for something stupid too, like saying she’d win in a fight against some random streamer and their fanbase gets pissed.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who feels bad about having nice things so she just buys you a ton of gifts. Gotta spend that streamer money somehow🤑
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who showed you on stream once and the chat went crazy. People made edits of the 10 seconds you were on screen. Ellie watched all of them.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who streams cutting her hair every few months. She says ‚she’s cooking’ while chat drags her through mud.
⇢ ˗ˏˋ streamer!Ellie who streams so much she started saying ‚chat’ in real life, even when she’s alone. Always gets embarrassed about it and apologizes.

Tips on character voices when writing fic
This is written in mind for people writing fic in MCYT/QSMP/DSMP/Life series/etc kind of fandoms. But if anyone finds it useful for anything else, well then, hell yeah.
Character voice is big in all, uh, fiction, and mimicking it in any fanwork is big. But I think it’s especially big in these fandoms where the voices are so distinct – it’s usually how a Real Person Somewhere (the streamer) talks, versus something very scripted that you’d see in a TV show or novel. And it can be a big difference in your character sounding generic versus really feeling true to the original.
Listen to a bunch of your subject talking. If you want to write a character well, watch vods from their point of view, or episodes where they show up a bunch. Take note of what they say and how.
2. If you don’t know how to start doing that: try literally writing down what they say. Transcribe an actual exchange in fic-format. You probably won’t want to publish a literal exchange from canon, but it will give you a sense of how to physically write what they say.
3. If you do this (or just pay attention to how they talk), you will get a lot of: Stumbling, pauses, repeating words, filler words, weird sentence constructions, fragments, etc. I love em! Here’s something that comes through in improv much more than in novels or movies: Most people, even very charismatic people, are not very eloquent when they speak. Writing out conversations or sentences will give you a sense of the unique and delightful way in which your subject is not eloquent. vvvvv way more under cut vvvvv
(People use a LOT of filler/etc when they speak. It’s reasonable to cut back on this if it’s interfering with a nice-looking or readable result. I believe this is the eternal struggle of people who write transcripts – you want the transcript to be accurate, but there are also a lot of things you can obviously simplify and not lose the meaning. So you’ll end up falling somewhere on this spectrum either way. But I do think a lot of mediocre/generic fic dialogue is very stylized – it doesn’t sound like your guy because your guy literally wouldn’t say that. They would say it worse and more confusingly.)
(I’m serious, if you’ve never sat down with a short non-completely-scripted clip or real conversation or whatever and just written out exactly what was said, do it. It will make you better at writing.)
4. Wonda-cat made a really incredible list [link] of characterizing speech patterns for the Dream SMP members. But you can also do your own reconnaissance and come up with your own patterns, common phrases, etc.
5. You do not have to get EVERYTHING right. You’re not going to, like, get so deep into the speaker’s brain that you can produce “exactly what they would have said if they were somehow in your fic.” That is impossible. You’re just trying to evoke a character, and if you get a few turns of phrase to ring true, you’re doing great.
6. A lot of these people are popular because they are hilarious. Include jokes. Yes, even if your thing is angsty or serious. A lot of the most serious lore I can think of from, e.g., the Dream SMP or 3rd Life or the QSMP - the really story-defining, life-and-death moments - were absolutely hysterical. If you’re writing characters who are usually funny, then add some humor. It can heighten angst via contrast and a sense of realism. Ask yourself what a funny streamer would make jokes about if they were possessing a character in this situation.
7. Some people have the mystical ability to “hear” character voices in their head, and read things in their voice. If you can, do this with all of your dialogue during the editing process. This won’t always get you there, but sometimes it can catch things that sound wrong by invoking "that's really hard to imagine them saying". If you don’t have this power, try recruiting a friend who does.
8. So there’s dialogue and then there’s narration that’s still from a character’s point of view. I’ve mostly given you tips about dialogue, but a lot of this is also true for narration. IMO, narration is less about phrasing things the way the subject would, and more about recreating the way they think. I don’t have concrete rules on how to do this, but here is my wisdom:
You can get eloquent again - narration is more of an abstract and artistic process than dialogue.
Spend time with your subject’s source material.
Pay attention to what they notice and care about. How do you think they think?
Don’t be afraid to get weird with it.
That last one also applies to all art ever.
9. MCYT tends to give you a great boon you don’t see in other media: what the speaker says to their chat/audience when nobody else is listening. This can be incredibly characterizing even if you’re writing a story where people don’t have chats. It’s your person talking about their thought processes and feelings! Mine that shit.
10. Some questions that might help guide both characterizing narration and dialogue (that you’d get from dialogue):
How open are they about their feelings?
How often do they lie? What do they lie about?
What kind of metaphors do they use, if any?
How quickly does their mood change?
How can you tell when they’re in different moods?
What kind of things do they pay attention to?
How formal is their speech?
11. Finally, this is a little odd, but I find it’s much, much easier to write a character that sounds good if I, the author, like them and am rooting for them at least a little bit. If a character needs to be there who you don’t love, try to love them. Or at least get a sense of what other people love about them. It just makes everything else easier. I swear to god.
Happy writing out there!

*I emerge from several weeks of talking about conceptualizing my cubitos and who else populates their world and what the precise nature of the character is* Hello. Hi. It's time for my twice-yearly thoughts on RPF.
Okay so I was one of the people who was emailing Ao3 about it when we had all of MCYT wrangled into VBRPF going please please please please can we have our own server tags pleeeeeeease I promise it's not just video blogging rpf pleeeeeeease my streamer doesn't have wings in real life pleasssssseeee— and my general stance is that writing about Dream SMP characters is writing about characters, it's not RPF.
Not quite. It's not quite RPF. There is a meaningful distinction there, but it's not a really huge one. That distinction exists and is important to me in how I conceptualize those characters and whether I'm mentally going "okay I need to study lore streams for vocal patterns" for voice research or if I'm going "okay I need to pull up technocord logs " to get techno voice right. What I consider the authoritative canon "character" is a rp guy who spawns withers, not a real streamer in california with a little white dog.
But like I do multifandom exchanges and I wander into them with my cubitos clutched tight in my palms, and I see what other fandoms look like— and importantly, I see what other rpf fandoms look like— and guys, I think that line is legitimately blurry and I think that's literally fine. If I walk into a mulltfandom space with my guys they're going to squint at me and go "rpf fandom— kinda, I think" and I can go "hahaha, not quite", but also I do not blame other people for thinking this is RPF cause like— there are a lot of similarities!
What MCYT tends to classify as "RPF" is directly stories operating in a world where the characters are streamers, they post on twitter, they have lunch with the CEO of twitch. And anyone not writing that, is obviously not writing RPF. And that is not untrue, up to a point, but there is a broad category of fics that tend WAY harder into the pure fictional that are still considered RPF fandoms, if you actually check what other RPF fandoms are doing. There are 599 works in "Demon Shane Madej", many of which are in AUs that have no connection to the real world other than the character relationships, and they're still officially considered RPF.
I have a friend who's in a c-drama rpf fandom that has a rpf ship they really like, and a really popular thing is to take the various characters these actors have played (totally fictional characters from various media) and ship them together. And that's just a crossover of two fictional mediums, but because the thread connecting them is two guys in real life, that's considered RPF.
The banddom tags are absolutely COMPLETELY full of aus that are not set in the real world at all, no connection to the music industry, and what the people in those fandoms will say is like yeah, I have no idea about the real guy, I'm working with a character/persona who's put on for the stage and interviews and personas, and that guy is not REAL, who knows what the real guy is like, but like, I like the persona, I deal with the persona, and then they put that persona in an au where he kisses other personas— and this gets considered RPF.
Wrestler RPF is directly dealing with invented characters who are beating the bloody snot out of each other (hot), they have names like "the undertaker", dealing with scripted storylines, but it still get considered RPF.
And like, I look at myself as I am entering my third year of writing Technoblade most of the time, and what I'm doing here and— there are a lot of similarities in what I'm doing to what other RPF fandoms are doing. I'm a fan of the DSMP character but I'm also a fan of the guy, so I want to play in this extended universe, so I want to include nods to his other stuff. So I will pepper in a cheeky nod to the potato war here, I'll mention hypixel there, etc, kind of make an extended Technoblade universe. And I think that's not RPF (quite) because I'm working from a fictional canon that includes references to the potato war and hypixel etc, I'm just expanding on it, but like, this is literally what my friend in c-drama rpf does as well when she's writing aus about her guy. It's kind of close to RPF. That line is not really obvious to the casual viewer.
So I do not blame anyone else if they look at what we're doing and they go ah, nods wisely, you are a rpf fandom, I've seen this before, and we go um actually, hahah, you'd think that, but no, and then they nod and clearly do not understand how it's not a RPF fandom.
But the thing is it's literally fine if people think that, I think. RPF is not the end of the world. It's just a bunch of people working with people's various performancesonas and worksonas and having fun with it. Spoilers for mythbusters in the real world, but we now know that by the end of mythbusters adam and jamie were not really friends, but most of the mythbusters rpf keeps them as friends because that was the professional persona they provided for the camera, and that was the fictional world the writers wanted to live in. I don't think it's a problem if someone wants to write straight up streamer fic, you do you, and that's unequivocally RPF, but once you start getting into AUs and extended universes and bringing emduo content into qsmp and writing fic based on GIGS streams, the line legitimately gets WAY more blurry.
I think a bunch of fic (including my fic) can start to exist in a "both things are true" state where it's drawing from direct fiction but it's also drawing from a lot of stuff that other fandoms would consider RPF sources, and like, I don't mind this. I don't think it's bad if you're doing this too. We're not getting more DSMP content, the fandom police are not gonna turn up at your house if you want to pull strongly from minecraft monday for your fic. Do schlackity on QSMP. Do a DSMP extended future where tommy gets tubbo to marry him for a bit and then tubbo immediately demands a divorce. The canon of material we have to draw on is not something where big obvious lines exist between "rpf content" and "pure fiction" if you step at ALL outside of canon-compliant. Like fuck, in my very first DSMP longfic I included all these hermit cameos and mcc references which would make it RPF in any other canon, but also I was pulling mainly from the prison arc lore and beats and relationships for the core, which is NOT rpf, and at this point it is not worth the hassle in my head to draw a strong distinction between them.
It's kinda RPF. It's not quite RPF. It's fictional. It's based in the real world. It's all personas. it's drawing on off-lore-stream dynamics. It's drawing on scripted scenes where my streamer had his camera in lore mode. It's COMPLICATED to unpick and I legitimately think that's fine. RPF is literally fine, some people are gonna think we're writing RPF, it's not the end of the world. Just have fun with it.

I told myself I wasn’t gonna post about minecraft smps on tumblr but I can’t help myself, I’m thinking the initial craze around dsmp has died down enough that I can post about it without being judged to harshly lol.
Minecraft smps are one of my top interests so I’d love to post more art about them! (my top favorites are Smplive, dsmp, and newest addition: qmsp)
Here’s my techno design (and some other stuff), not super original by any means, I just wanted to draw a big pig.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also because some people get confused: like 99% of the time I am drawing/talking about dsmp it’s about the characters not the streamers/actors!
I don’t think I can post dsmp without taking about it a bit. initially I wrote like a whole ass essay on my opinions on the unfortunate circumstances of the dsmp but i threw that away because no one wants to read all that lol here’s my attempt at a tldr for said essay for your viewing (dis)pleasure!
Dsmp was a mess, not just because of the audience but also because of the way certain creators went about interacting with said audience. A majority of the audience was younger kids, and for a lot of them I’m assuming dsmp was kind of a gateway into fandom (and twitch) culture. Because of this there was some weird behaviours and shit that cropped up and unfortunately certain creators chose to encourage these behaviours instead of shutting it down, which really shouldn’t have been happening, especially considering once again, the majority of this audience was younger kids who don’t really know any better. And to top all of this off the dsmp was being streamed live on twitch, where viewers were able to use chat and donation messages to talk directly to these creators, this unfortunately lead to lots of unhealthy relationships forming from these kids thinking the creators were their friends in a way.
So we kind of ended up with the awful combination of a load of kids, stuck in quarantine, watching and directly interacting with these creators, and being encouraged to behave in questionable ways by some of these creators.
In no way at all do I think dsmp is the worst fandom to exist (or even close to it really) I just think there was a lot of unfortunate circumstance and situations that (because of a large audience) ended up being amplified to an even larger audience.
Now I am going to physically walk away from my keyboard because I could genuinely talk for hours about minecraft smps and I need to stfu lmao, if you happened to actually read all this shit here’s a special message for you: hiiii!!!! :3
Also also if you read all this and are interested in talking about it, fukcing comment!! I would unironically love to talk about minecraft smps to anyone at all lmao

Tumblr media
TOMMYINNIT
"woah- hey there"
you're bouncing off the walls and dying to show him
you picked the one moment he's busy with editing and you stand behind him for a solid 3 minutes before he turns around
you stick your tongue out to show off your new piercing and he exclaims a bit, his emotions in awe
he may look disgusted or cringed, but he's just surprised you're for one, not in pain, two, how good it looks on you
"Holy shit, it looks awesome y/n!"
then proceeds to ask a million questions about it
he's mostly just curious what it feels like inside your mouth and how you take care of it and eat around it
idk what to call it bc I obv don't have a tongue piercing (or any in general LMAO) but you do the little putting the piercing between your teeth trick for him and he jumps back all frightened at first
he had no idea how you did it somehow
"how the fuck did you just do that???"
you to be fair jumpscared him with it so you just kinda show him
"doesn't that hurt????"
RANBOO
"Ran, lookit!"
Bro looks up at you with your tongue out and his resting face turns into a wide smile
"Oh my God!? you actually got it? I'm so happy for you!"
wraps you in a hug
once the excitement wears off he's super paranoid about you being uncomfortable or in pain because I mean your tongue just got jabbed with a needle and now you've got a piece of metal in it
also asks questions, mostly because he also wants to understand how it feels in your mouth
"does it like... rub up on the roof of your mouth and scratch it? like, does it hurt other than the pain from the insertion?"
they LOVE when you do the little teeth trick, it's just so cool to them lmao
they'll gift you some new (high quality) jewelry as well every once in a while
he literally went online to get a customized one that says "#1 Ranboo fan" in it for you 💀💀
instead of wearing it, you turn it into a bracelet/necklace/use it as another kind of piercing that way you can actually show it off
he likes seeing you fidget around specifically w the pill ones
questions you constantly how you don't accidently swallow it or something
"wait.. do you take it out when you shower and brush your teeth? genuine question, I swear!"
again, they're happy if you're happy
they're happy seeing you be able to express yourself more clearly and they don't care what it is, they're always by your side
BADLINU
he, harry, & bill came with you for moral support
he wasn't staring down the inside of your mouth but he felt the pain with how hard you were squeezing his hand 💀💀💀💀
he looks up at Harry and Bill with pleading eyes like "Holy shit they have some grip help me"
he refuses to buy/let you buy jewelry that isn't 100% high quality
nor is he letting that shit get infected either
he always notices when you match the jewelry to your outfits or the occasion as well
like you'll be attending the streamer awards and you'll smile for a picture and he'll just see your jewelry perfectly matches your outfit
he likes buying you the fun colorful ones bc you only buy the plain silver/gold/black ones for yourself
"Wait, how do you like... get it out?"
"how much does it hurt?"
sometimes he just finds jewelry you left on the nightstand or dresser from when you have sleepovers
he'll text you like "dude you left your stuff here again I told you to check 💀"
"Shut up I'm omw back"
QUACKITY
"OH MY GOD HOLY SHIT YOU LOOK AWESOME"
like engulfs you in a hug
instantly shows you off the the gang and shit
you basically tell chat all about the story at the piercers and he's cringing in pain all the way through
oh my God he hates the descriptions you use he swears it's just to tease him or something
also the type to custom order jewelry for you
you do order a custom one with the pixel :) tho & u wear it the most out of the other jewelry you have lmaoooo
if it was still 2019 u totally would've done the iconic quackityhq duck
when he kisses you he likes touching the piercing w his tongue just to fuck you up bc it feels weird
"HAHA L!"
genuinely concerned sometimes bc you sit there and fidget w it and zone out for a solid 5 minutes in a loud room and he's just worried you'll rip it out or smthn
also the type to wonder how you don't accidently swallow it
always makes you pose with your tongue out in pics he takes of you bc he's so in love with it
he probably loves that damn piercing more than he loves you
NIHACHU
"Oh my gosh! you look so good!"
like hugs you and spins you around
helps you take care of it and stuff, always on top making sure you're not in pain and whatnot
she'll match her snakebites with your new piercing
if you're wearing some silver jewelry, she'll change her snakebites to silver hoops or spikes etc etc
also gifts you jewelry religiously
she found some online (high quality as well 🙏🙏🙏) that perfectly match your aesthetic and never has she ever clicked add to cart so damn quick
also helps you style jewelry with outfits
she also likes the teeth trick, she likes the sound mostly of the jewelry clinking off your teeth
it's one of those like adrenaline shudder moments yk?
but she is constantly getting pictures of you showing it off/with your tongue out
like quackity, I think she likes the piercing more than she likes you LMAO
FOOLISH GAMERS
"Oh, hi- oh my God, hi!"
he's so interested just off the bat
you do the little teeth trick and he does his little giggle ❤️❤️
"that sounds so weird"
he has you show it off to his stream and he's all smiles and shit
he of course gifts you a lot of jewelry as well and always triple checks to make sure it's high quality
his Google history is just "Is _____ high quality?" "Is it safe to buy from ____?" etc
when you're making out or whatever he loves tasting the metal of the piercing on his tongue, he's addicted
always compliments you as well, always posting photos w you showing it off too
like you'll most a photo showing it off and he'll be in the comments like "marry me pls" and be fighting off your fans who are just complimenting you
like some random person will be like "omg you look so cool!!" and he'll jokingly reply with a "back off buddy they're mine 😡"
God I'm so in love with this man

When I was in law school I was struggling with the worst depression and anxiety combo of my life. I hated going to school, I hated studying, I hated how trapped I felt because I'd paid all that money and hated everything about what I was doing.
I started putting on vods of people playing Minecraft while I was studying to distract me from how frustrated I was. I put on Wilbur Soot, admittedly, because he was a cute looking guy with a British accent and then I fell in love with his content.
I remember the late night streams with a guitar and relating to how, hey, yeah, that's me too. I get it. The things that keep you up at night and that parasocial relationship with a screen that can't answer you back was a strong pull.
I followed his content casually when I was finishing school. And then Covid happened. I got more invested. DSMP happened. I finally gave in and started watching streams live. I gave in and joined fandom.
I made friends. So many friends. I've traveled so much. I've met people and listened to so much music and gotten into arguments with strangers and slept on people's couches and sat in the fucking dessert in August. I don't regret a moment of it. I loved it.
But I can't support someone who is a dangerous person. I won't speculate, or make this about him, other than to please use common sense. The same reason we all critiqued another's creators fans for sticking by him applies here.
I've run an update account about this guy for a while now. Through the nature of looking up articles, finding clips to share, and asks and submissions we receive, I end up with a lot of info I never wanted. But I can't ignore what that information tells me about the person I've been supporting.
I feel like this is an active grieving process. I skipped denial pretty quick, but bargaining has happened. Parasocial or whatever, but so have tears. Anger. So much anger and disappointment. Fear about the relationships I've built and a growing emptiness of feeling like a hobby and community I've loved is now just gone and that it's For A Good Reason. Guilt because someone was hurt, truly hurt, and supporting them has to come first but I am also just. Sad.
Quiet, aching sadness over the loss of not some dude whose content I watched, but every other little thing I'll miss about being around and always having something to look forward to and people to laugh with me about it.
Please be patient. Be kind. Pay attention to red flags and support those trying to work through their own abuse and neglect. I'm sad now, but they need support more than any fan of a band ever would.
