hello!! i don’t really want to harp on this issue, but this is just a small reminder that Mindy Kaling has actually NOT done a lot of the horrible things she’s being accused of! You don’t have to personally like her or her humor, but I beg of you to please at least do some research on her supposed problematic behavior before you start treating her & the things she makes/contributes to so viciously :(
If you have a reliable source detailing something shitty she’s done, by all means please leave it in a reply/reblog! The more knowledge the better! But I do ask that you be civil about it!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. May I please request a matchup for One Piece?
My pronouns are she/her and I prefer men.
Personality: Leo, INFJ, 1w9. Making an effort to understand myself and others is important to me, so that leads to long periods of pondering my actions, as well as others’. I love having me time, though I enjoy being with those close to me from time to time. I love discussing topics that revolve around enigmas. It’s not as important to have others agree with me as it is to explore the unknown with them. Since I’m reserved, I take a long time to open up to others. I’m gentle but can be (unintentionally) intimidating. I’m adventurous and have completed a dream of mine – living/working in a country that doesn’t speak my native language. I actively search for things to be thankful for. I'm easily flustered, clumsy, athletic, and conscientious. My humor is witty and sarcastic. Every now and then, I like listening to the branches being rustled by the wind and being able to gaze up at the moon and stars shining brightly, which remind me that there's a lot of beauty in the world, and I'm glad to experience it. I am happiest when seeking out information/reason. I’m really kinda superstitious…
Likes and Dislikes: I like practicing the languages I know, demonology, biology, genealogy, reading, museums, Victorian history, singing, alternative rock, and exploring my surroundings. A large portion of what I read/watch relates to the occult. Although I used to play the piano and was extremely talented, I still admire it and may want to get back into it in the future. I dislike storms, large bodies of water, and people who always turn disagreements into arguments.
Hobbies: Writing horror stories, DnD, reading, singing, listening to music, watching horror movies, drawing, and yoga. As an avid horror fan, animated movies are for sure a guilty pleasure of mine.
Appearance: long wavy auburn hair and my eyes are more of a honey brown. I always wear round glasses. I'm pale with freckles on my cheeks and nose. 5’9, more of an hourglass shape and have a bit of muscle
Thank you so much in advance! I'm sure I'll love it. :)
Hi! Thank you for your request! Sorry it took so long. I am currently up to episode 410 (Amazon Lily) of One Piece so please keep that in mind while reading. I hope you like your matchup!
In One Piece, I match you with...
Tumblr media
You and Law would take a while to get together since you’re both slow to open up to other people but once you learn to trust each other, your bond is unbreakable.
Admires the fact that you consider your actions and try to understand others. He’s surrounded by people like Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats so it’s a nice change of pace being with someone who thinks before they act.
In a modern au, Law would absolutely play D&D. I can see him as either a rogue or the DM but either way, he enjoys playing through campaigns with you.
Loves your wit and sarcasm. He’s got a very dry sense of humour himself so he can certainly appreciate your humour as well.
I can also see Law as someone who is interested in the occult and enigmas. He finds those little known or understood aspects of life intriguing: it’s the same reason he’s interested in medicine and understanding the human body.

I'm glad that you're feeling a bit better! Hope the rest of your day goes well. May I please request a matchup for Food Wars and Hetalia? (If I'm only allowed one, then Food Wars, please!) My pronouns are she/her and I'm straight.
Appearance: long wavy auburn hair and my eyes are more of a honey brown. I always wear round glasses. I'm pale with freckles on my cheeks and nose. 5’9, more of an hourglass shape and have a bit of muscle.
Personality:  INFJ, 1w9, leo, Ravenclaw. I unintentionally come off as intimidating, although I'm a very gentle person. Since I'm a bit reserved, I take a long time to open up to others. I'm adventurous and have completed a dream of mine - living/working in a country that doesn't speak my language. I'd consider myself to be witty with a sarcastic sense of humor, as well as conscientious and clumsy. I can get easily flustered. Despite possibly having described myself as uptight, I often go with the flow to show I'm lighthearted. I really enjoy having me time but like being with those close to me from time to time. I'd also see myself as encouraging and supportive. Boredom isn’t something that I really experience, as I can easily entertain myself. I spend lots of time reflecting, trying to understand myself and others.
Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy writing short horror stories, listening to music, singing, reading, and practicing languages the most. In terms of exercise, I love doing yoga, dancing, going on hikes, exploring my surroundings (It involves lots of walking so it totally counts as exercise, right?). The vast majority of TV shows and movies I enjoy relate to the occult, Victorian history, and animation. Being an avid horror fan, animated movies are for sure a guilty pleasure of mine. Coco is 10/10 for a good cry. Genealogy, demonology, and biology are deep loves of mine, too. Not sure how weird this may come across, but I have a deep fascination with death and thoroughly enjoy delving into topics on it, especially the afterlife. It’s not as important for me to have the other person agree as it is to explore the unknown with them.
Favorite Color: purple, but I mostly wear black and white.
Favorite Food: practically anything, I’m not picky. Though, my favorite drink is hot chocolate.
Thank you so much in advance! Have a lovely day/night ( ˘͈ ᵕ ˘͈)
For Food Wars: I pair you with...
Tumblr media
Akira Hayama!
This charmer made sure not to rush you out of your shell before you got together.
He often shows interest in your writing and will listen to any finished drafts of your stories.
He will practice yoga with you and will sometimes have Jun join in if she has free time.
Of course he cooks for you!
He'll even share his knowledge of different spices!
He makes amazing hot chocolate (the secret is a small dash of cinnamon)!
For Hetalia: I pair you with...
Tumblr media
Spain!
He got really excited when he found out that you liked to learn new languages!
So, of course, this means free Spanish lessons.
He'll watch horror films with you, though he does get a bit jumpy afterwards.
He teaches you traditional Spanish dances.
And he'll secretly use both the dance and language lessons to flirt with you.
Walks around the town are almost weekly!

Tumblr media
Nine petals and counting.
Y/N rested her hands on the sides of the vinyl bathroom sink, head tilted downwards, towards the view of red. Solids and liquids approached the drain, a mix of flowers and blood escaping from her body.
Ten, eleven, twelve. It was unstoppable, the amount of love she was losing, the amount of strength she had to go on. Her legs felt weak, frail in comparison to her usual tenacity and vigor on the side of the court.
She hadn’t been able to manage the volleyball team in weeks, nearing months. Her physical health had wavered, forcing her to resign from her post. Forcing her responsibilities on their coach, her boys having to fend for themselves for the first time since she was fifteen.
Loneliness was all Y/N knew, though she was still an avid student and classmate. It was all she’d felt in the past days, isolated from her friends, her classmates, even him.
Even Kuroo.
It wasn’t that she wanted to be apart from him, from his humor, his laugh, the overwhelming feeling of warmth that he brought to her life. He was her sun amongst Toyko’s sea of stars—but he couldn’t see her like this.
He couldn’t see the blood stains, the coughing fits, the garden of flowers that grew from her throat. She was a mess and he was him, the very person that caused her this horrid disease. The very person that she loved more than anyone in the entire world.
Hanahaki wasn’t uncommon in their town, nearly a quarter of Nekoma High suffered from it in some type of way. It was truly an enigma, a confusion turned infection that made no sense to the human mind.
Y/N had tried to re-work her diagnosis for years, since the first few weeks she’d had it—and despite her knowledge of anatomy and biology, there was no solution to her dilemma, there was no true scientific cure.
And over time, she and Kuroo had come to realize that. While they worked and worked for a way to rid her of the thorns, there was nothing they could do as he didn’t know who her love was.
He didn’t know that no matter how many nights he stayed up beside her, chin rested over her shoulder, arms wrapped around her torso—no matter how much he tried to relieve her of her pain, he only made it worse.
He wanted to help, she knew that he wanted to help in any way that he could—but it was no use. All he’d ever be able to do is watch in sympathy as she’d run out of their classroom and back into the hole that was the public girl’s restroom.
Kuroo was the best person Y/N knew, which was all the more reason that he had to stay out, that he needed to give her space during this time. The disaster that was hanahaki couldn’t infiltrate his life, Y/N wouldn’t let it, he didn’t deserve the pressure—the pressure of loving her.
Thirteen, fourteen, to nothing.
Relief began to overcome her lungs, oxygen filling her veins, the thorn-covered vines retreated back to the place in which they came. It was as if the sun had finally showered through the clouds, giving Y/N the light that she so desperately needed.
Her flowers were strange in comparison to the stories she and Kuroo had read online. Rather than continuous, straight lines of blood and blossoms—her roses were sporadic and unpredictable.
There’d be times where she’d be stuck in the restroom for the entirety of the day, throwing up due to her rib cage cramping and rolling over itself—or she’d be perfectly fine, with all the energy in the world.
Those days were her favorite. The day’s where she and Kuroo would scream at the top of their lungs. Where he’d spin her around and wrap her up in the tightest hug he could muster. Where he’d smile at her as if she wasn’t only his best friend—as if he loved her.
But he didn’t. He didn’t love her, not in the way she wanted at least.
A light sigh escaped Y/N’s lips, her quivering body stilling as she finally took a look towards her reflection. She’d been staring at the pile of scarlet for nearly a half-an-hour, trying her best not to lose count of her trauma.
Fifteen petals was all it took to uproot her day, dwindle her time with Kuroo down to nothing. It was embarrassing, truly.—that her soul was controlled by a mere rose.
Color slowly returned to her cheeks, flushed shades of pink mocking her with their rosy hue, red lighting up the tip of her nose. Her eyes were weary, blurry from the amount of tears she’d shed, the same tears that had meshed with the running tap water.
Taking a deep breath, Y/N let go of the sink. She let go of the safety of her reflection, the safety of knowing that she was the only person who’d ever see herself this way, completely derailed by love.
Stepping into the real world, the world of judgement from classmates and concerned advisors, she hastily left the bathroom—only for a large, calloused hand to wrap itself around her forearm.
As she rolled her eyes, turning to face her captor, Y/N raised her palm and flicked her best friend right between his eyebrows. “You waited?” She suppressed a grin, stifling a laugh at the sight of his mocking pout.
“Seems like fan behavior to me, Kuroo.”
He frowned at her words, picking her up with ease as he made his way down the now empty hallways. Y/N squealed, despite being used to his relentless strength, there would never be a time in which she’d expect him to throw her over his shoulder.
Holding her legs whilst supporting her waist, he nodded with a troublesome smile at any of their classmates who’d so happened to remain after the school bell had rung—to which they’d respond with a simple shake of the head, amused at the sight of Nekoma High’s infamous best friends.
“Fan behavior, huh?” Kuroo spun dramatically as they reached the parking lot, nearly throwing Y/N into the passenger seat of his car, her designated spot. The place where no person, not even Kenma, was allowed to sit.
He instinctively buckled her seatbelt, knowing that she must’ve felt weak and nauseous due to the stress her body had been under only ten minutes prior, before settling himself behind the wheel.
A bright beam overcame his features, practically spreading across his entire face as her eyes met his. “Where to next?” Y/N asked, fingers fiddling with the different radio channels, deciding on a soft indie-station.
“Home.” He replied, taking a hold of the hand she’d placed over the volume nozzle, allowing them to turn up the song together. Though it was brief, him releasing her touch after seconds, it was moments like this where she considered the theory that perhaps she did hold a place in his heart.
She shook her head, forcing the absurd thought away and rolling her eyes once again at the utter ridiculousness that was Kuroo Tetsurou. She leaned back into the soft leather of her seat, deadpanning at his words. “Your home. You act as if I live there.”
“You practically do,” he quipped back with ease, hair pressed against the chair’s headrest, smothering the thick black peaks, “What’s mine is yours, Y/N. There’s nothing I’d ever keep from you.”
“You deserve the world, and I’m going to give you every little bit of this world that I can.”
Her lips pursed into a tight smile, internally punching herself at the sweetness in his voice, the purity that he managed to sop into every word. Looking away from his gorgeous face, gaze retreating to the bustling city around them, Y/N contemplated his promise.
It was impossible, the idea that he’d proposed. The thing that he vowed to her in the mornings, afternoons, and nights. The concept that she always loved to hear roll off of his tongue, but also wanted to throw out her open window.
After all, how would Kuroo ever be able to give her the world—when her world was entirely him?
Tumblr media
While his house was practically her second home, Y/N always seemed to notice the residence beside it before anything else.
As they pulled up in the driveway, Kuroo carefully parking his car between the stone gate and his grandfather’s buggy, both of their ears perked to the familiar sound of none other than Kozume Kenma.
“You’re spending the night again?” He questioned peering over the fence, recognizing the extra duffel packed along with Y/N’s school bag. “You were just over last week. You’d think you guys would be sick of each other by now.”
Kuroo shook his head, making his way around the hood and opening the passenger door. “No way, pudding head.” He shouted, resting his elbow on the roof whilst slinging the small pack over his shoulder. “Only thing I’d ever get sick of is your cute little attitude.”
Y/N giggled, squinting her eyes to see the nonchalant expression that was undoubtedly gracing Kenma’s features. She wasn’t exactly close with him, having little to nothing in common other than their giant of a friend, but still held great respect for his dedication.
Dedication as in the value to which he held his friendship with Kuroo.
Though she’d known their captain longer, there were times in which she wasn’t able to be by his side during matches or breakdowns. This usually having to do with her hanahaki forcing her to be immobile.
But it always turned out alright, since Kenma was there. He was always there to help, even when she’d forget to send him a warning text message or quick heads up. He was reliable as he was pessimistic, a truly unconventional friend that Y/N would be grateful for until the very end.
As Kuroo took her bags inside the house, insisting that he had to help even though she claimed that her muscles were feeling perfectly fine, Y/N waved to the younger boy, casually approaching his small figure.
Her steps were small, fallen leaves crunching beneath the soles of her sneakers. Autumn was beautiful this year, the oranges and yellows mixing together like the perfect sunset.
It was complementary, the colors—they reflected the sky in a dream-like synchronization. The last time fall had landed upon Japan, she and Kuroo had spent the entire day nestled together, jumping in the multiple piles of leaves and sipping spiced drinks by the fireplace.
While the memories were happy and nostalgic, they were a distraction. Nothing but recollections of false hope and ideologies that she’d ingrained into her brain as convincing factors that he did indeed love her—that he had just an inch of his heart that was completely reserved for her.
Kenma immediately opened his mouth, interrupting Y/N before she could ask him all about how his school day had gone. Her jaw dropped, the statement being said was unexpected, out of box in the current moment of relaxation.
“You still have hanahaki.” He looked straight into her eyes as if he were challenging her. If Y/N could see into his brain, there was no doubt that the gears would be turning rapidly in synchrony. “You’ve had it for years, Y/N. A normal person would’ve given up by now.”
She frowned, her lips curving into a downward arc, slightly appalled by the bluntness of his words, before furrowing her brows while she came up with an understandable response.
Her relationship with Kenma was civil, never straying from one of acquaintances, but there were sparse moments like this in which he’d blatantly say something personal—something that made her think that he knew more than he was letting on.
“I don’t think my case falls under the normal category.” Y/N whispered, choosing to reply with honesty over falsehood, while both of their gazes fled to Kuroo, who’d cheered as he successfully managed to unlock the front door with his hands full of bags.
“You don’t have to worry about him,” she continued with a love-struck radiance. As if on natural instinct, her legs began to move towards the person that was her heart, abandoning Kenma to his side of the fence.
With one final glance, she saw him nod at her last words. The words that she repeated to herself every time her flowers became too much, every time she needed to remember why she was here in the first place.
“As long as I’m still breathing, he’s got me.” She called out, chest warming at the sight of her little friend’s approval. The approval that meant more to her than any test grade or big win. “I’m not going anywhere.”
Tumblr media
“Heads up!”
Before she could blink an eye, Y/N’s vision was covered by the thin grey fabric of Kuroo’s massive t-shirt. It draped over her head like a sheet in the night, the smell being clean and comforting, completely and utterly him.
Reaching up to take hold of the borrowed garment, she shoved his chest, feeling the vibrations of laughter rolling off of him in contagious waves. Despite how much he annoyed her, he could be quite amusing at times.
Their dynamic had always been an interesting one. Her being more logical and serious, whilst he was carefree and witty. They weren’t an obvious pair of best friends, but they did have the important things in common.
That being the value of hard work and dedication, whether that came to school assignments or volleyball—they both knew the true meaning of ambition and success, and would do anything to help the other achieve their dreams.
Opening the door to the guest bathroom, Y/N slipped Kuroo’s shirt over the tank top she’d been wearing, stripping herself of her undergarments beneath the endless fabric. She tossed her clothes into her duffel, zipping it tightly and placing it on the floor.
The Kuroo household was a place she was comfortable in, having been friends with the boy for nearly all of her life. It wasn’t uncommon for her to stop by and stay for dinner or overnight, considering his family adored her and considered her one of their own.
In their first year of high school, she’d spent a total of one-hundred and twenty nights wrapped up in his arms before his grandparents had decided to permanently mark the guest bedroom as her’s.
Though she’d grown accustomed to the warmth of her best friend’s comforter, Y/N did have to admit that it was nice to have her own space. Her own space that also gave her the luxury of having the person she loved only one wall away.
As she dug through the right-hand drawer for the toothbrush and toothpaste that she always stored in the case that she’d be staying overnight, a rhythm of knocks ricocheted off of the hard wood.
“You ready?” She called out, walking past the sliding shower doors and turning the small door-knob. “I was just about to brush my teeth,” her words continued, stopping as she came face-to-face with her favorite giant.
His smile was cheeky, mischief seemingly on his mind as he held up his own set of tools. “You waited for me, Y/N?” A sly smirk crept on his face, her words from earlier coming back to bite her in the butt. “Seems a little like fan behavior to me.”
Rolling her eyes, Y/N stepped aside, making room for his ginormous body in the quaint bathroom. The countertop wasn’t exactly large, having just enough space for the two of them to stand beside one another with their arms touching as they looked into their reflections.
Her eyes seemed distant, even to herself. The usual livelihood that inhabited her irises was absent, replaced with fragments of the person she once was, the person that had been overshadowed by dirt and disease.
Resentment was the only emotion she displayed, hatred for the pathetic reasoning behind her pain, the putrid dreams she wished would come true—but as Y/N looked away from the stress and worry, she saw him. She saw Kuroo.
Unlike her, his gaze wasn’t resting on himself. His eyes weren’t immediately attracted to his own appearance, choosing to lay on Y/N instead. His neck was angled down, a soft expression gracing his face while he simply admired her.
While he admired her like a boy in love.
They held eye contact for a brief moment, neither one wanting to end the intimate interaction, before he broke away. He snapped out of his trance, hands subconsciously reaching for the tube of toothpaste that had been forgotten by both minds.
As they began to brush their teeth, Kuroo played troublemaker. Whether that meant making faces or mimicking Y/N’s actions, he found endless ways to humor her, wanting to see the smile on her face as she flipped him off.
The laughter wheezing from her lips was infectious, her body doubling over, forcing heavy chuckles from her love as well. It was a sight to see, two high schoolers in a minimal-sized bathroom, overcome with a fit of giggles—but that was simply them. It was simply Y/N and Kuroo.
With a mouth full of foam, she leaned past him and over the sink, expecting to see a mix of bubbles and white—only to be gifted with the mood-killing sight of blood and blossoms.
She choked, gasping for air as the small roses fell from her throat. “Please,” she cried, gripping the ledge of the counter with a killer grasp, gesturing for Kuroo to leave the room. “I can’t breathe.”
But he didn’t listen, he didn’t leave. He didn’t cover his eyes and walk away like he normally did, respecting her wishes that he would never see her like this—like a complete and utter mess.
As her airway began to clear, her smiles turned to frowns, embarrassed of what he’d seen, the proof of her never-ending infatuation. However, Kuroo didn’t seem phased. He glanced at the flowers as if they were nothing, as if they weren’t a foul sight in itself.
He turned the faucet on, washing them away from her view, forcing the spray roses to dissolve and wither above the drain—and for some odd reason, Y/N’s heart hurt at his actions.
It was the first time in months that he’d been present during one of her uproars. The first time in months that he had to see what she went through on a nearly daily basis, and he didn’t even blink an eye.
He looked at the physical representation of her love like it didn’t matter, like it was a pest that he had to kill. Like an unintentional rejection that his instincts dictated, a rejection that she feared for every moment of every day.
“I’m sorry.” Y/N muttered, refusing to meet the concern in his gaze. She squeezed her eyes shut, blocking out the inevitable judgement that she expected to come from his way—only to feel his rough hand take a hold of her chin, tilting it upwards towards his face.
Nothing was said, no remarks came from his end. Instead, he wordlessly stole the hand towel that’d been hanging on the shower door and dabbed away the blood that had soaked into the skin beneath her lips.
He was unreadable.
No matter how hard she tried to analyze his thoughts, his actions, his posture; a blank canvas was all she’d painted. She wanted to keep apologizing for the things that were out of her control, but as she opened her mouth to speak, he interrupted with a question that she’d never expected to hear.
“If it weren’t for your hanahaki,” he began, brows furrowed in concentration, not allowing Y/N to pin-point what he was so focused on, if it was the disease or herself. “Do you think you’d know that you love them?”
“You know, your person?”
Her response was momentary, the gears in her brain working on overtime as she tried to find the meaning behind his words. Why the sudden curiosity? Did he have hanahaki? Was there someone he loved?
Clearing her throat, making sure that there was no evidence of her accident, Y/N began to speak slowly. “Being in love is more than just a disease, Kuroo. It can’t be dimmed down to a single flower or infection.”
“I love him enough to put myself through pressure every day. I love him so much that it physically hurts me to think about him. He brings a light to this darkness that no other person can outshine—”
“—and I’d never give up on him.” Glass covered her eyes, tears struggling to roll down her cheeks as her peripheral vision grew blurry. In the midst of her tangent, Kuroo had pressed Y/N against his chest, rubbing her back in soft circles.
“He’s the other half of me, my true equal.” Bitterness was being laced in her tone, the irony of it all settling in. It was unfair. Her describing her everlasting love for the boy she’d do anything for. He was right beside her, and yet he seemed miles away.
“I’d know love for him even if I was healthy. Even if we were strangers, worlds apart.” Choking back the last of her cries, Y/N bit her lip, pushing away the warmth of his chest. “Trust me, Kuroo. You’d know if you were in love.”
For once in his life, he had no words. No comments or remarks that he was dying to say. His only response was a nod of the head, a curt acknowledgement of her feelings, before he turned and said a brief goodnight.
Before he turned and left Y/N with nothing but confusion, thoughts that would keep her restless and awake throughout the night. Itching concerns to creep up her veins and into her dreams.
If only he loved her, then all of this could’ve been avoided. If only he had asked her who her hanahaki was for, then maybe she would’ve confessed. Perhaps she’d be free and untethered from her illness.
But he didn’t ask, and she didn’t confess. All she was left with was broken fragments of care, leftovers of love that she received through twisted questions and wonder.
All she was left with was half of a heart, that would never find its whole.
Tumblr media
2AM.
It was nearly two in the morning and Y/N was restless, chasing sleep like it was an everlasting punishment. Slumber being within her grasp, but stolen, kidnapped by the stress and worries that were Kuroo Tetsurou.
Her mind was moving at a million miles per hour, overthinking and overworking the question that he’d asked her in the midst of their nightly routine. The curiosity that had somehow overcome his usual vigor and happiness.
Panic settled in her throat, the feeling of thorns and stems inching their way up her neck and touching her tongue. She needed water, anything that could suppress the punishment for feeling love.
Swinging her legs over the side of the queen-sized mattress, Y/N shivered as her feet touched the cold floor. Her steps were light, trying her best to be completely silent, not wanting to disturb the actual members of the household.
The trip to the kitchen was short. An easy route for her after having taken many midnights trips before, since her hanahaki always seemed to act up whenever she stayed overnight.
Finding a small glass and filling it to the brim with tap water, Y/N gulped it down, savoring every last bit as if there was no other substance on Earth. The liquid ran down her throat, pushing past the vines and forcing them into their home that was her heart.
“You’re up late.”
Y/N jumped, nearly smashing the cup on the counter as the familiar voice of Kuroo’s obaachan crept up from behind her. She sighed, taking a deep breath before facing the old woman.
Her relationship with his family had grown extremely close in the years that they’d known each other. She was practically considered a member of the family, them always wanting her around no matter what the circumstances were.
But she and obaachan were different compared to how she bonded with the Kuroo men. Unlike the others, his grandmother was observant, knowing of the love that Y/N had for her favorite boy. Knowing of the cause of her hanahaki.
“Obaachan.” She greeted her weakly, holding up the glass as an excuse for the timing of their interaction. “I’m sorry if I woke you, I didn’t mean to cause any havoc.”
The old woman simply smiled, approaching Y/N with a loving hand and placing it on her shoulder in comfort. “It’s alright dear,” she squeezed her palm, feeling the younger girl’s struggling heartbeat. “It’s not your fault.”
Y/N grimaced, shaking her head in defeat. “But it is,” she admitted. She’d always take blame for her hanahaki. It was a virus in not only her life, but everyone around her. “It’s my fault that I’m unwell.”
“No, dear.” Obaachan cupped her hands around her cheeks, challenging her eyes, not taking her answer or excuses. A sad smile graced her lips, sorrow in her irises. “You’re not unwell..you’re in love.”
Tears grew from the corners of Y/N’s sockets, waterworks beginning to roll down her cheeks at the familiar feeling of the comforting touch of a Kuroo. She broke down, her walls shattering in front of the only person who understood. The only person who would truly listen.
“Why won’t he love me?” She cried out, pain overtaking her whole body. The pent up emotions were collapsing like tidal waves, storming throughout her heart. “Why won’t I ever deserve him?”
Concern furrowed in the older woman’s brows at the sight of Y/N breaking down. Her grandson’s best friend was one of the strongest people she knew, and knowing that her struggles were this great was indescribably disheartening.
“My Tetsurou has been a caretaker all of his life,” she started, gently speaking in languid sentences, doing her best to keep Y/N’s attention on her and not her pain. “Whether it was for me, my husband, or Kenma—he takes on more responsibility than he can handle.”
“His heart is so big, so full of love for everyone other than himself.” She continued, her words beginning to settle in Y/N’s mind. “And in the midst of that, I don’t think he realizes that he’s capable of experiencing love as well.”
“He doesn’t realize that everything he could ever want is standing right in front of him.”
Obaachan was whispering now, her voice being soft but commanding. It was frightening, the passion that she held for her grandson. The passion that she held for her dreams of his happiness. Her dreams of him finding his true love.
“While love is a chemical feeling, it has no chemical solution.” Y/N swallowed hard, taking in every single thing she was saying. Letting her statements ingrain themselves into her memory. “This disease doesn’t define your future, my dear.”
“Whomever you choose to love will be lucky, Y/N—but I have to say, I truly hope that my Tetsurou has luck on his side.”
Tumblr media
It’d been almost a month since the fateful overnight encounter, Obbachan’s words playing on repeat, over and over again until they grew tiresome. The idea that Kuroo could perhaps love her was haunting, terrorizing her very soul.
Despite the shift in their energy, the elephant in the room being his unexpected question and her never ending response, their friendship continued on like normal.
They’d go to school, spend time together afterwards, perhaps even have a sleepover, and repeat. It was all the same, not a thing out of place except for a major detail that couldn’t be explained.
The presence of Y/N’s hanahaki was little to none.
Her flowers decreased, the numbers becoming smaller and smaller every single time she took the time to count. The disease that had become a constant in her life had suddenly disappeared, confusing her to a maximum.
She didn’t feel like she’d fallen out of love for Kuroo, there was still a large part of her heart that was reserved for him and only him—yet her roses were invisible, the trips to the bathroom were down to none.
And while those statistics had fallen, the number of quick glances, stolen touches, and late night conversations had increased. She and Kuroo did everything together before, but now it was as if they were inseparable at all times.
It was as if his heart had finally opened up, accepted her presence and locked it into place, never wanting to let it go. Y/N couldn’t determine what had gotten into him, what made the sudden change in behavior.
But her flowers were gone and her love still remained. All that needed to be said was a confession, a confession of the love that she hoped was mutual. The one-sided love that she’d secretly harbored for years on years.
Mindlessly walking down the school hallway, passing by classmates and advisors, Y/N contemplated the future of her and Kuroo’s relationship. The future of her heart and if it would ever find its other half. The other half that so happened to take a hold of her hand at that very moment.
Kuroo seemed on edge, his heartbeat was quick, throbbing against Y/N’s palm as he dragged her towards the closest empty classroom. Without warning he closed the door, drowning out the scattered noises of everyone on the other side of the wall.
“Hey.” He said, breathing heavily. His shoulders were rising and falling, his breaths deep as if he’d just ran a marathon on his path to retrieve her. “I really needed to talk to you.”
Y/N almost toppled over, the strength of his grasp tripping and unbalancing her body. As her vision began to stabilize, wobbly from the sprint, she took notice of the classroom he’d brought her to.
Flowers lined the walls and ceilings, potted plants hanging from the wooden beams and arches. Soil was sprinkled over the floorboards, various footprints etched into the dirt.
He’d taken her to the floriculture classroom—the classroom for the study of flowers.
Silence overcame them for a moment, neither one speaking a single word as they stared deeply into each other’s eyes. Her confession was at the tip of her tongue, ready to be said, ready to be spoken into existence—but Kuroo spoke first.
“I’ve never had it.” He simply said, his mouth pursed and head towering over her. Before she could respond, asking him what in the world he was talking about, he continued. “Hanahaki. I’ve never had it.”
Biting his lips, Kuroo took her hands in his once more. Rubbing her palms with his calloused fingertips, easing away her confusion and speaking his feelings with his entire heart weighed into them.
“All this time, for all these years, I thought that I’d never known love.” His brows furrowed in concentration, and for the first time, Y/N could tell what he was so focused on. It was her.
“I asked you how you knew that you were in love, flowers or not, and the way you described that feeling..it was familiar. It was something that I’d felt before, something that I felt all of the time.”
“Something that I felt all of the time for you.”
Y/N was at a loss for words, the confession that she’d always wanted to say being said to her. The very moment that she’d dreamed of was actually coming true, it was actually happening right in front of her eyes. It wasn’t her imagination—it was real. Kuroo loved her.
The smile spread across her face was more than enough to ease his nerves, her teeth were so bright they could’ve been compared to the sun. He couldn’t help but think of how beautiful she looked, how she was his sun.
“I’m so sorry my love hasn’t been constant, Y/N. It shouldn’t have taken me this long to realize the patterns, how your hanahaki came and went. It was my fault you’ve gone through so much pain.”
“But even here,” he whispered, pulling her close. His arms wrapped themselves around her body, his nose being mere inches away from hers. “With all of the flowers anyone could ever ask for, the only one that matters is you.”
She could feel his breath now, the soft breeze against her cheeks. Her body wanted to surge forward, connect their lips in a final confirmation of their feelings. She wanted the kiss with Kuroo that she’d been waiting for for her entire life.
“I love you.” He admitted, not waiting for her response before pressing his mouth to hers.
His smile could be felt between their lips, moving continuously as if they didn’t need any air to breathe. After all, they really only needed each other—Kuroo was the missing piece to Y/N’s puzzle, her heart was finally whole.
As they broke apart, love radiating off of them in contagious waves, overwhelming the room, igniting the aura—a cheeky grin grew on her new lover’s face.
He plucked a flower from the pot behind her head, presenting it with a laugh at the sight of her rolling her eyes in mock annoyance. Although she found him to be ridiculous, she accepted it gratefully—loving the new chapter that they were about to embark on.
“I heard you like roses?”

Hi! May i please have a matchup from MHA? I’m a bisexual 19 year old girl. I’m 5’9, caucasian, and i have wavy long brown hair, hazel eyes, and i wear glasses. I have a thin/athletic build. I have a soft light academia kind of style, and i love wearing sweaters.
I’m INTP, and i tend to be really antisocial. My sense of humor is really sarcastic, and i like to playfully tease people. People describe me as kind of intimidating sometimes, mainly because i’m usually quiet around others. I’m also pretty stubborn. Despite this, i’m also pretty childish sometimes, but i know how to be serious too. In a relationship, i’m a bit easily jealous, but i don’t like showing it.
I’m in college and majoring in psychology. I take schoolwork pretty seriously, and i’m also learning french on the side!
My love language is words of affirmation, and i’m not a big fan of physical affection! I take things slow in a relationship.
I’m very into fitness and health, and i exercise every day (mainly strength!). Some of my other hobbies include shopping, playing video games, and baking. I’m a stress baker, sometimes i’ll get upset and the way i’ll cheer myself up is by making a batch of cookies or cupcakes :) I’m into a lot of soft things, like animal crossing, minecraft, and sanrio, but i’m also a really big fan of horror games and movies!! My favorite season is fall, and my favorite color is purple. I’m also an avid coffee drinker, but i love hot cocoa too. Thank you so much in advance :)
AHHH I KNOW WHO TO MATCH YOU WITH hear me out okay I match you with...
Shigaraki Tomura
Tumblr media
I'm so sad I couldn't find that gif of him looking pretty with his side profile
(A side note, I’m not a manga reader~ so this is based off the anime and my understanding of Shiggy). You would be a big blessing for the League in general and Shigaraki’s saving grace. Shiggy and you would probably initially have clashing personalities, but I think after you warmed up to him, he’d find himself in loveee~
I got so carried away with this one so please do not mind me
You’d end up in the league as someone who was held captive (they were looking for a mind-based quirk and took you in). You were a psych major at your university in order to better understand your quirk, where you were successful and became well known. Shigaraki had heard of you and asked for you specifically. When he captured you, he found you to be quiet- not answering any questions. He was taken aback by the first words out your mouth being a really sarcastic comment that had Dabi chuckling. From there Shigaraki was pretty flustered (pretty girl insulting him hurts his ego) and determined you probably wouldn’t cooperate. He was shocked when you agreed to join the League. You decided to coexist with him, not really paying him much mind, just viewing him as the boss. It was only during a conversation with Toga that his perspective on you changed. “She fits in, boss! We’re glad ya brought her here.”
When he sat and thought about it, you did fit in. You were as intimidating as the rest of them, for sure. You may not have actively engaged with everyone by talking, the moments you did spend acknowledging them were nice. Shigaraki specifically remembers a time when you made some cookies and left them for the League to eat (you’d stress baked a huugeee batch), and he remembers looking around at the League- people who he knew weren’t always the softest, people who he knew had gone through a lot of shit, and he watched them… eat cookies. Quietly, contently. And he ate some, too. And he thought that it was a kindness he didn’t think he’d experienced before. He enjoyed it. He hoped right then and there that you’d bake for them again.
Whenever you did spend time actively talking to the rest of the League, you’d always make the funniest comments, and when they weren’t directed at Shigaraki, he found them hilarious. And (he’d never say it) he tolerated the teasing you did to him, because while he hated being made fun of, he loved when you talked to him (Dabi noticed his crush and instantly taunted Shigarakit- which Shigaraki didn’t tolerate loll).
Another major perk of having you be a part of the League was having access to your knowledge about health- both physical and mental. You actively tried to live a healthy lifestyle- you’d work out, eat properly, and made sure to drink lots of water. The league never really spent too much time working on their health, but watching you do so intrigued them. Toga and Twice were intrigued enough that they decided to try it out with you. I think they found self care to be quite nice! Your knowledge of psychology also helped with monitoring their mental states.
All this said, Shiggy was grateful for how you intentionally or unintentionally helped the league out, and started falling for you in the process. He didn’t think you’d ever like him, so he wasn’t planning on saying anything. But Toga and Kurogiri both forced him to (Toga knew you had developed a soft spot for their leader), and when you accepted his feelings this man felt like his life would never be the same.
As a boyfriend, Shigaraki would take the best care of you. I think he’d be 1)bragging about you constantly. To the whole league. ALL the time. “Are you two dating? I had no fucking clue,” Dabi had said once in the middle of Shiggy talking about you again. He’d also praise you to your face all the time. He talked about how smart you are, how talented you are, he’d tell you how you made the League more fun, all sorts of things. If you ever got jealous of smaller villains flirting with him, he’d (revel in it slightly cuz he thought you being jealous was really attractive, but also) assure you that he’d turn them to dust if you asked. He’d steal for you if you’d let him, but he wouldn’t object to going out and actually shopping if you preferred that.
2) He’d try to spend as much time with you as he could when he wasn’t plotting the destruction of hero society. He understood that you liked space and time to yourself, and he did a good job of respecting it. But when you wanted to, he would love to play minecraft and animal crossing with you. He stole bought a switch for you so you two could play together, even if on opposite sides of the room. He would make the League have movie nights to watch horror movies when he found out you liked them, even if it ended with him getting made fun of for being caught off guard with jumpscares.
Fights with Shigaraki weren’t common, but they were wild when they happened. Both of you had the tendency to be childish when you were upset, and both of you were stubborn. It was usually a waiting game till one of you decided they missed the other, and from there you would both talk it out. Afterall, you knew how to be serious about things when you had to, and Shigaraki wasn’t the type to let a fight get in the way of his love for you.
I think your relationship can be summarized by that one quote- “A hero would sacrifice you to save the world. But a villain would sacrifice the world for you.” Your relationship with Shigaraki was wholesome, loving, innocent, and funny all the same. You had the leader of the LOV wrapped around your finger.
~~~
I hope you enjoyed! I personally love Shigaraki a lot but I know not everyone likes villains, so I hope you didn't mind being matched up with one! if you're unhappy with it just lemme know okay
Synopsis: She is a scriptwriter and had Henry Cavill in mind for a character she’s written. She never actually imagined meeting the man himself, let alone him saying yes to her casting suggestion. It’s two days before filming starts and she is allowing herself to be relaxed about Henry.
Written in third person. Y/N – your name. Y/N/I – your Instagram. Y/NWriter – your name writer (public instagram)
A/N: Hey, Cavillry! I’m not really a henry cavill fan, I’m only familiar with him in superman and stardust but your posts have inspired to write this. Hopefully, I did your king justice.
Tumblr media
She couldn’t remember what time she had fallen asleep on the lounge, but her neck ached, she reached for her phone. She saw the screen of her phone filled with Instagram notifications.
Half awake she tried to make sense of the notifications as she logged into Instagram. Her private account had been tagged in a post.
She blinked hard several times as she clicked on the tagged post. Her jaw dropped when she realised.
Henry Cavill had shared the photo she had sent him on his account and tagged her private account.
She looked at the caption he had added.
They call this, Call Me Henry.
@y/n/i
“Cavill!? What have you done!?” She went back to her notifications seeing follow requests from countless account. She tried to decline as many as possible. She began getting frustrated at the endless requests. She went up to her Instagram inbox and found the message she had sent Henry.
Mr Cavill, can you please tag my public account instead. Please?
@y/nwriter
She noticed he had seen the message, she went back to her notifications to clear out her follow requests. Y/N kept this account private for a reason, she wanted to keep a sense of herself to herself.
Her eyes flicked to the top of her phone screen as a new Instagram notification came through Henry Cavill tagged @y/nwriter in a post. She smiled a little “Thank you” she said to herself.
She assumed Henry meant not harm when he tagged her in the post. She clicked on the Instagram notification and watched as it switched her Instagram account to her public one. She clicked on the tagged post and began to read through the comments of Henry’s new post.
She chewed on her bottom lip as she saw one comment Did anyone else see that change of @ ? . She read another one His in King of Realms!? . Some were positive while others made her feel a sting of pain; y/n tried not to take those sting of pain comments too heart, she wasn’t in a relationship with Henry and didn’t plan on it, but those ones made it feel like her privacy was being invaded.
Y/N used her public account to comment on Henry’s post. Man, that photographer did a good job at capturing your good side. She added a smiling with sunglasses emoji to her comment before pressing send.
Seconds later, Henry replied to her comment. Maybe you should take more. With an emoji of a crown and octopus.
Y/N laughed at his response.
She placed her phone back down on the coffee table as it started to blow up with Instagram notifications. She wondered into the bedroom and began searching through her suitcase for something to wear for the day.
-          -    -
Today was everyone’s day off before they start filming in two days’ time.
Y/N didn’t want to spend her free time in a hotel apartment in an area that she wasn’t familiar with. She grabbed her handbag, hotel keys and phone before walking out of the apartment.
She walked towards the elevator and pressed the down button. She stared at the silver closed doors; she let her mind wonder.
Was she falling for him? Was she wanting to start something she’d regret? Why couldn’t she let herself doing something dumb?
Her phone was on silent, but she knew that her phone was still blowing up with notifications. She wondered what Henry had started, why did he start it? Did he want something in return?
Did he want to be her prince charming? Did he always want her to be a damsel in distress?
Her thoughts were knocked away with she heard the ding of the elevator; forcing herself to realise the doors had open.
“Call me Henry” She humorously spoke as she stepped into the elevator.
Henry shook his head lightly; His assistant didn’t understand the banter.
Y/N looked at the buttons noticing the ground one had been pressed. She leant against the elevator wall “Thanks for changing the at on Instagram.” She mentioned.
“Welcome” Henry remained curious on the woman he barely knew. “What’s your plans for today?”
Y/N shrugged “Probably just wonder around until I realise, I’m lost” she whimsically stated “yours?”
“Might do the same, maybe we could get lost together?” Henry suggested.
“I’d like that” Y/N smiled.
The elevator reached ground level and all three stepped out.
-          -    -
The three of them spent the day wondering around the area while his assistant had to keep searching online where the three of them were each time, they thought they had gotten lost. They started to make their way back to the hotel with the help of his assistant guiding them back.
Y/N and Henry had spent the time bonding over games. Henry learnt that she was an avid gamer like him, she even played the same games as him even playing against him in world of warcraft. Now he understood how good her gaming lingo was in the script.
“Ah, here we are” Henry sounded as if was the one that had lead the way back to the hotel.
Y/N rolled her eyes.
The three of them walked up the elevator. His assistant pressed the up button as they waited.
The elevator dinged open; the three of them stepped inside.
Y/N’s thoughts around Henry had shifted, she could imagine being friend’s with him. She still wanted to keep up the professional façade towards him while also keeping him at arm’s length. She pressed her floor level while his assistant pressed Henry’s floor level.
Henry noticed that Y/N would get off first.
“Thanks for today, it was nice having some company while I got lost” She looked up at Henry and his assistant.
“Anytime” Henry beamed.
She looked up at the numbers as they ticked over with each passing floor. She straightened her position as it stopped at her floor.
“I’ll see you around” She bid goodbye as she stepped out of the elevator.
“I’m just going to walk Y/N to her room.” He whispered to his assistant before stopping the elevator doors from closing. “Y/N”
She stopped a few steps away from the elevator; she seemed curious “You don’t need to protect me” she looked at him as he stepped closer to her.
“I know”
The two of them silently walked to her apartment.
She searched her handbag for the hotel key, she used it to open her door.
Before she had a chance to step through it; Henry had pressed her up against the opened door. His lips pressed against her’s.
She allowed herself to lose herself in the kiss; letting Henry wrap his arms around her waist. She felt his tongue slide into her mouth, she allowed herself to let her tongue move around his.
Y/N pressed her hands up against Henry’s chest. He took that as a cue, he rested his forehead against her’s.
“Sorry” he breathed.
She lowered her gaze slightly “How about I close the door first?” she moved her gaze up to his face.
Henry stepped back to allow Y/N to close the apartment door; he kept his arms around her waist.
She dropped her handbag by her feet “Are you sure you want to do whatever is about to happen next?” she dropped her hotel key on her bag.
“Only if you are.”
She sighed “Well the kiss was nice” she pushed his arms away from her body “But let’s not.”
Henry nodded slightly “Right” he tried not to take offense “I’ll, uh. See you tomorrow.” He placed his hand on the door handle.
She let Henry walk out the door; she closed the apartment door and leaned her head against the door. Y/N wanted to let herself make a regret with Henry but something inside of her stopped her.
A Leaf in a Stream.
The matriarchs of Minari—Youn Yuh-jung and Han Ye-ri—talk to Aaron Yap about chestnuts, ear-cleaning, dancing, Doctor Zhivago and their unexpected paths into acting.
A delicate cinematic braid that captures the sense of adventure, sacrifice and uncertainty of uprooting, Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari might be the closest approximation of my immigrant experience on the big screen yet. Sure, Arkansas is a world of difference from New Zealand. But those dynamics and emotional textures of a family in the process of assimilation—authentically realized by Chung—remain the same.
The film is a wonder of humane storytelling, with the American-born Chung encasing deeply personal memories in a brittle, bittersweet calibration that recalls the meditative, modest glow and touching whimsy of an Ozu or Kore-eda. As Jen writes, “To describe Minari? Being embraced in a long, warm hug.” Or perhaps, it’s like Darren says, “floating along peacefully like a leaf in a stream”.
Neither is alone in their effusive praise. Minari rapidly rose to the top of Letterboxd’s Official Top 50 of 2020, and by year’s end our community had crowned it their highest-rated film. Despite its cultural specificity—a Korean family shifting to the Ozarks in the 1980s—the film has transcended barriers and stolen hearts. Run director Aneesh Chaganty says, “I saw my dad. I saw my mom. I saw my grandma. I saw my brother. I saw me.” Iana writes, “Its portrayal of assimilation rang so true and for that, I feel personally attacked.” The versatile herb of the title, Kevin observes, is “a marker of home, of South Korea, but it can grow and propagate as long as there is water.”
Though a large portion of Minari was vividly drawn from Chung’s childhood, a few of the film’s most quietly memorable moments were contributions from its Korean-born cast.
Tumblr media
Youn Yuh-jung as Soonja in ‘Minari’.
Veteran actress Youn Yuh-jung, who’s extraordinary as the visiting, wily grandmother Soonja, traces the origins of the scene where she cracks open a chestnut in her mouth and hands it to seven-year-old grandson David (Alan Kim), to her time living in America. “I’ve seen one grandmother visiting at the time—we don’t have chestnuts in Florida—she brought them all the way from Korea. Actually it was worse than the scene. My friend’s mother brought [the] chestnut. She chewed it and spit it out into a spoon and shared it with her grandson. Her husband was an Irishman. He was almost shocked. We didn’t do that, but I shared that kind of thing with Isaac.”
Most viewers watching this scene will likely recoil in horror, as David does, but co-star Han Ye-ri, playing Soonja’s daughter Monica, notes the practicality of the gesture: “If you give a big chunk to children they could choke on that, so it’s natural for them to do that for their children.”
In another brief, beautifully serene scene—one that is so rarely depicted in American cinema that it’s almost stunning—Monica is seen gently cleaning David’s ears. Han came up with the idea. “Originally it was cutting the nails for David,” she says. “Cleaning your wife and husband’s ears is such a common thing in Korea. Initially the producer or somebody from the production opposed the idea because they regarded it as dangerous, but because it is something that is so common in our daily lives I thought we should go with the idea.”
Neither actress comes from a traditional movie-oriented background. With no acting ambitions, Youn began her fifty-year career with a part-time job hunt that led her to distributing gifts to an audience at a TV station. “It was freshman year from college and they gave me pretty good money. So I thought, ‘Wow, that’s good!’.”
“I’m kind of ashamed about that, as nowadays all the kids plan their future,” she says. “When I talk to the younger generation, they start having dreams about being an actor in the sixth grade. In the sixth grade, I was just playing—nothing. I didn’t plan anything. [Laughs.]”
Tumblr media
Han Ye-ri and Noel Kate Cho in ‘Minari’.
Before acting, Ye-ri trained as a professional dancer, and while she wasn’t specifically inspired by movies to cross over into acting, she was an avid film watcher in her formative years. “Working as an actress made me realize how many films I’ve seen growing up.”
“My first memory of a non-Korean-language film left such a strong impression on me, especially the ending,” she says. “The film is called Doctor Zhivago. I saw it on TV and not in theaters. The first film I saw in theaters was Beauty and the Beast. But even growing up I remember because Koreans love films so much they would have films on TV all the time. I watched a lot of TV growing up because both my parents were busy, and in retrospect that really helped become the basis of my career. [Laughs.]”
She also grew up “taking reference from Miss Youn’s body of work to study from, as did many other actresses”. Grateful for the opportunity to work with her on Minari, Ye-ri says, “On set working with her, it made me realize how wonderful it is that this person still carries her own distinct color and scent. And seeing her taking part in this production in a foreign country—she’s over 70—it just really encouraged me that I should be more fearless like her.” She adds: “One of the things that I really want to learn from her is her sense of humor but I think I’m going to have that for my next life. [Laughs.]”
As for Youn’s adventures in early movie-going, she recalls the first Korean film she saw with her father was the 1956 historical drama Ma-ui taeja, based on a popular Korean fairy tale. “I was so scared. I cried so my father had to take me out of the theater.”
“At [the] time, we always had to watch the news on the screen before the movie. It started with a national anthem and every audience from the theater would need to stand up and pledge to the Korean flag. It’s a very stupid thing for you guys but it was like that 60 years ago.”
Tumblr media
Han Ye-ri as Monica in ‘Minari’.
For Minari fans who want to discover more of Youn’s work, she recommends starting with the first movie she made with the late, great director Kim Ki-young, Woman of Fire—a remake of his own 1962 Korean classic The Housemaid. “A long time ago I couldn’t see it. Of course I first saw it when it was shown at the theater back when I was twenty. But later on we had a retrospective, so I saw that movie 50 years later. Wow, he was very genius. I was very impressed. That time we had censorship and everything but with that crisis he made that film. That was a memorable movie to [me].”
Youn admits finding it difficult to be emotionally invested watching a film starring herself, including Minari. “It’s terrible, it’s killing me,” she says. “I always think about why I did this and that scene like that. I’m just criticizing every scene so I’m not enjoying it at all.”
Asked which films she enjoys, she offers: “Some other people’s movies like Mike Leigh and Kore-eda Hirokazu. Your Chinese movies I fell in love with. Zhang Yimou when he started. Then later on when he became a big shot, I don’t enjoy [them]. [Laughs.]”
During the shoot, members of the cast and crew caught Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, 2019’s powerful, heartfelt Chinese-American immigrant story. While Youn missed it (“I was just staying home trying to memorize the lines and resting”), Ye-ri watched with interest: “That film also had a grandmother character, so did ours, and these two are completely different. But at the same time from both films you can feel the warmth and thoughtfulness of grandmothers in different ways. To me they are both very lovely films.”
Of her recent viewings, Ye-ri reveals she found Soul made her as emotional as Minari did. “It made me look back at how I live and my day. It’s not necessarily for children but I think it’s a film for adults. [Pauses.] I’m Thinking of Ending Things. I love that film also.”
‘Minari’ is out now in select theaters across the US and other territories, with virtual screenings available to US audiences in the A24 screening room.
Tumblr media
Jake Park wasn’t ashamed to admit he’d picked up a taste for country music after having an existential crisis; in fact, he wasn’t even ashamed to admit he’d become an avid fan of Kate Denson - not a stan, though. Sure, he followed her on his private Instagram, but that wasn’t to lurk on her sexy photoshoot pictures, it was just to keep track of release dates for her albums. Granted, it never is hard to admit things when you don’t have friends to admit them to in the first place.
Every now and then he’d wonder if he should stop being such a stiff and just call one of his old work buddies for a steak dinner, but a quick scroll through their text history would remind him why he left the world of Wall Street behind to begin with. Materialism pales in comparison to the simple things in life, he’d tell himself. His baser instincts had always told him life wasn’t meant to be complicated, which is why he shoved those instincts down for years.
But Kate’s music - the songs of America’s sweetheart - reminded him of what an uncomplicated life was. Hard, rewarding work all day, and well-deserved rest at night. So much more peaceful than the never-ending rat race of the big city. Her music spoke to his soul in ways nothing ever had before, calmed his spirit. It made him realize how lost he was. So, he ditched the concrete jungle in favor of the real deal. Now all he ever dreamed of was thanking the young star who set him on fire again, giving him a new lease on life.
When he heard she was touring in his city, he felt excitement seeping into his very essence. Finally, the chance he’d been hoping for. He supposed she would be bashful, tell him he did more to turn his life around than she did. She gave off that vibe, at least. But Jake knew the truth, and he hoped he might find a kindred spirit in her. He pulled out an old business suit, perfect for a rare night on the town, brought his expensive car out of the garage acting as its tomb, and purchased a VIP ticket.
He was the last person in line. When he got to the front, he was almost speechless at the sight of her - almost. He managed to get out, “Miss Denson, your music saved my life.” The star laughed shyly, like she was used to a different kind of person saying those words to her. Probably fourteen, wearing braces, just having gone through their emo phase before getting back in touch with their roots. All the kids go through them these days, after all. Even a little cousin of Jake’s did a few years back. While he pondered this, he couldn’t help but also ponder how her laugh sounded like wind chimes. How is it that musicians always sound so magical?
As Jake mused, Kate said something he couldn’t quite hear and began to walk away with her security detail, agent in tow. “Wait!” He called out, and she turned back to face him. He could tell her agent was thinking he was just a crazed country boy super fan. “What if I told you that your music is the reason why I walked away from Wall Street?”
Kate smiled, a little confused. “I’d say that explains the accent. What’s your name, mister...?”
“Park. Jake Park, to be exact, but you can call me Jake, if you’d like.”
She laughed again, this time with confidence unlike before, demeanor changing from wary to businesslike. Or... something else. Jake couldn’t quite place it. “Well, Jake, I have a burning question for you: Why would my music make you give up a career like that?” She broke away from her entourage to come closer.
“We could discuss it over dinner, if you’d like?” Jake offered, the old swagger from his uptown days making a guest appearance. Sure, he wasn’t working numbers under uppity snobs to get a bigger Christmas bonus anymore, but he still knew how to play poker. If Kate’s eyes were of any indication, his gut told him he may have just been dealt a winning hand.
Kate accepted before her agent could intervene or protest, his eyes turning into slits. Probably worried Jake’s background with money and marketing could put him out of a job. Maybe he was right. “I’d love to get to know my most interesting fan. Might as well put that Wall Street money to use, huh?”
“Sure thing, darlin’.”
Tumblr media
Since that day, their relationship as business partners, friends, and eventually more, blossomed. Kate dropped her greedy agent and management team for the generous man who became her best friend. Jake used his book smarts and savvy money skills to help lower Kate’s touring costs, made her performances more accessible to *all* of her fans, and helped her rake in extra profits from her music releases *and* with cheaper marketing. She spent less time in the studio and more time with him on their back porch as he sat and listened to her beautiful creations.
Truth be told, meeting Jake helped save Kate. Her old team had been stripping the life from her creativity, pushing for numbers rather than quality content. Having Jake work with her personally made everything so... simple. Working from home when making music, waking up to the sun dappling her skin through the the leaves of the trees, feeling the breeze on her face and his kisses on her fingers - it put the inspiration back into her music.
Her fans seemed to notice too, and they seemed to get a kick out of her sharing more about her life online, making theories about their relationship. Jake and Kate would scroll through the subreddit comments and laugh at the crazy ideas everyone had. Jake hadn’t laughed like that with someone in a long time. He hadn’t had a sense of humor in a long time, either.
When his family came calling, lecturing him about dropping his old career and this and that, he invited them over for dinner... and showed them that his and Kate’s retirement funds were already completed when she wasn’t looking. Their qualms ended after seeing the financial security they had, and seeing how calm Jake’s home life was. Sure, it was a strange change, but for once, Jake was happy, and seemed fulfilled. They didn’t always understand everything, but they understood enough.
Eventually, they visited Jake’s family in Korea, had their quiet wedding, nothing crazy, just something for family and close friends and nice rings, and did some remodeling with their own bare hands to create a cute nursery, complete with musical instruments and stuffed animals. When the delivery date came, Jake was a mess. He knew his wife would handle it like a champ, but his nerves were still through the roof. The labor came and went easily, and they came home with a beautiful baby girl.
“What are you going to call her?” Kate’s mother cooed as she obsessed over the newborn.
Jake was thinking Yu-Hwa, and I was thinking Grace. He said I could have the first name if he had the middle name.” Kate mused. Jake was outside working on building a playground for their daughter. He’d insisted on getting an early start, arguing that his mother said time flies when raising a baby, no matter that their child was only a week old.
“Grace sounds beautiful. It matches your names, too. Oh, I’m going to have *so* much fun spoiling this little girl!” The new grandmother whisper-squealed, not wanting to wake the baby. “When are you going to have more?”
Kate laughed. “I told you mom, we just want the one.”
“For now.”
“For *forever,* mom.”
“What’s this about another child?” Jake asked, announcing his presence.
“Just Grama Denson getting a bit too ahead of herself.” Kate rolled her eyes.
Jake casually wrapped his arms around Kate, planting a kiss on her forehead before heading to the fridge to steal some lemonade. “I mean, between you and me, eomma, I wouldn’t mind making another baby, long as they keep turning out this cute.”
Kate gave him a quick flick to the forehead before he could dodge it. “Stop conspiring against me with my mother, sir. It takes two to tango.”
Tumblr media
When the playground was finished, Kate did, in fact, gain another baby bump, watching happily as her husband helped their first waddler play outside. Grace Yu-Hwa Park and Dae-Hwan Lee Park, DaeDae for short, were lucky enough to have the best dad, Kate thought. Jake looked up at her, glowing in spite of the autumn cold, and thought the same thing.
My thoughts on DT17 character changes!
For context, I wanna say that as a kid I only had experience with a few DT87 episodes and the movie. I didn’t watch any Darkwing, and I watched a lot of Rescue Rangers!
I’ve always thought of Ducktales as the reboot that gives the most respect to its original (In a world of terrible TTG, Ben 10, ATLA and PPG reboots) But-! If you’re a longtime Ducktales fan and disagree with anything I say here, feel free to correct me! That’s why I’m making this post!
Huey, Dewey, Louie, Webby, and Beakley: Much better than the originals, since they decided to give them actual personalities and character arcs! (Bonus: I like that they made Webby an avid historian and tough but not violent to distinguish her from the many other Genki girls Disney has been making these days)
Duckworth: Since they made Beakley more serious, I like that they made Duckworth a ghost and her rival to distinguish the two of them!
Glomgold: Apparently while different from his DT87 counterpart, he matches his original comics version much more! I like that they redesigned him to be less of a Scrooge clone and Keith Ferguson is a fantastic actor!
Magica: I really prefer Catherine Tate’s performance, and how well Magica was set up as main villain of Season 1! I will say that I think the DT17 team has been struggling a bit to return her to being a minor villain like in the original, since she has to be powerful enough to be a threat but not too strong to overshadow other villains. (Bonus: I really like Lena as a foil to her and Webby- she’s my favorite new reboot character!)
Gyro: The first character I heard worries about. I just wanna say that I enjoy the jokes and plots that come from his new madder scientist persona and that if he was as nice as the original Gyro was, it would make him too similar to Fenton I think? I’m glad we got to see his original nicer personality in Astro Boyd, though I do wish we got to see the exact moment he became colder.
Doofus Drake: Another character who went from nice to mean. I think maybe they changed him to allow for Boyd to have the role of the triplets’ woodchuck friend? I might be biased because I think the Doofus jokes are some of the funniest in the whole series, but if you think they could/should have found a way to make him nicer or if they could have given his “spoiled kid” role to an existing or new character, let me know!
Fenton: The ethnicity change wouldn’t nearly have been as genuine without LMM’s sincere voice acting- I really like Fenton and can’t wait to see more of him and Darkwing in the future!
Djinn(?): Apparently he’s a non-racist version of Dijon from the movie instead of an original character? I do like how he breaks from the generic foreign edgy guy stereotype because he has a good sense of humor and loves his family.
Gandra: I also like Gandra’s character in the reboot, but this is one case where I think it’s so different from her original femme fatale counterpart that they might as well have made her a new character. It’s like an MCU MJ situation, y’know? Not a bad character, just one who has to live in the shadow of another.
Phantom Blot: I heard complaints about this character too, but after looking him up on Wikipedia, I’m surprised his character has been changed so much already! I thought he was some meta ink guy in a cartoon world, but it turns out that’s just the Shadow Blot from Epic Mickey? He’s just a dog in a mask? And while I’m not a huge fan of the weird Mordo+Thanos Blot they have in DT17 it’s at least slightly better than the generic thief/supervillain I’ve seen him as elsewhere I guess?
Darkwing Duck: I like that his origins seem much more sincere this time! I’ve already expressed a lot of my thoughts and questions about Let’s Get Dangerous in Part 1 of this post, so I’ll just add: I was never a fan of “toony physics” characters. An example being how every WB character either always wins or always loses and it gets boring (Looking at you, Animaniacs coming back…) So I at least enjoy that this Darkwing is slightly less toony!
Steelbeak: This was actually the character who inspired me to make this post! So, if I have this right, the original Steelbeak was this fast-talking crime boss type with a high-pitched Rob Paulsen voice. And the DT17 version is a much more short-tempered and slightly slow-witted character with a gruff and gravely voice? And a lot of people were upset about that right? The thing is though, I do agree with the theory that once the FOWL arc ends in season 3, Steelbeak will become much more confident and independent, but also the appropriate level of bumbling like his original counterpart. So while I understand if any fans are hurt, I think we should just wait and see how things go!
Bushroot: Another character I’ve heard complaints about- I know Frank Angones has already explained his reasoning behind zombie Bushroot, but I’d like to add on to that a bit more. I think having the original timid Bushroot hidden beneath his new monstrous persona would make him seem much more tragic and give Darkwing a good chance to redeem him in a future episode! Also, when I looked up his character on the DW wiki, he seemed like kind of an incel…? So I’m also hoping they fix/address that too.
And that’s it! Did I miss any characters? Do you disagree with any points I made, or did I actually help you enjoy some of the DT17 changes a bit more? Let me know!
becky albertalli’s ‘simon vs. the homo sapiens agenda’: a review, amongst other things
Tumblr media
I walked into Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda fully prepared to hate it. I’d read it a grand total of one (01) time before, way back in December 2019, with very high expectations that were dashed to smithereens halfway through. On my first reading, I found it terribly cliché, vapid and utterly undeserving of the multitude of four- and five-star ratings on Goodreads.
I’m still iffy about those ratings (it’s a solid two-point-five, three at best for me), but I didn’t hate it as much the second time around. Maybe it was because my expectations were so low that the only way it could go from there was up. You could say that I almost… enjoyed it.
That didn’t stop me from scribbling a page of complaints, though.
I’ve seen many reviews hailing the book as a win for the LGBTQ+ community, for BIPOC, for YA fiction. And Albertalli’s certainly done a better job of writing the character of a homosexual male than certain others. Simon’s whole coming-out crisis is definitely relatable, and it’s definitely a relief to have a character who’s accepted their sexuality instead of one who spends roughly 200 pages whining, “bUt HoW cAn I LiKe BoY wHeN I aM bOy??”
And yet it can be so tone-deaf in other parts.
The most glaring example is at the start of the book (I doubt this constitutes as a spoiler), where Simon says (lmao), about lesbian and bisexual girls: “I think it’s different for girls. Maybe it’s easier. If there’s one thing the Tumblr has taught me, it’s that a lot of guys consider it hot when a girl is a lesbian.”
Yes, the really says ‘the Tumblr’. And it’s not the last time, either.
I find it hard to believe that Simon, a gen-Z if my calculations serve me correct, has a Tumblr account and doesn’t know about Phan, Drarry, Destiel (RIP), Larry Stylinson (yikes) and the other staple gay OTPs of gen-Z Tumblr culture. If there’s one thing the Tumblr has taught me, it’s that there are way too many gay male ships with a brunette and a blond, with predominantly female fans.
Granted, Simon’s talking about their school’s gossip blog in particular, but that can’t be the only blog he follows.
Because fetishization is so easy, am I right, ladies?
You might bring up the ‘death of the author’ paradigm; Simon’s views ≠ Becky Albertalli’s; Simon is a teenage boy and teenage boys are generally idiots- and yet it feels like this is something the author genuinely believes, because she’s also included Simon being A-okay and even flattered by his friend Leah’s gay fanart and fanfic obsession. Yeah… no. Fetishization of queer people is creepy and dehumanizing and I’ve yet to meet a single queer person who’s on board with the idea of cishets doing so.
Also, the fact that he warmed up to Martin even while he was being blackmailed is something no actual closeted queer would do, ever. I’m pretty sure I’m speaking for loads of queer people when I say that being out to someone you don’t trust is a literal nightmare- even worse when they use that against you. And this motherfucker’s all like, “Well yeah, he’s threatening to out me to everyone if I don’t set him up with my best friend, but he’s kinda funny :) I think we could be friends.”
Simon- fuck you, you smoothbrained numbskull.
Another thing I found cringey was how many pop culture references were thrown in. Why, on god’s green earth, would you name a dog Bieber? For one, that’s a godawful name; for another- Justin Bieber? Really?
I consider myself a pretty avid fan of Harry Potter (here I will insert the obligatory ‘fuck you, JKR’), and whenever I see a reference thrown in, I feel like that one Spider-Man meme. And yet there were way. too. many. in this damn book. Seriously. We get it. Simon’s a Potterhead. That’s enough.
Also, I’m obligated to cancel anyone who likes Reese’s cups. They’re fucking vile.
Other attempts at gen-Z-ing that made me want to fling myself into the nearest black hole: every time Simon said ‘I can’t even’; a pop-punk band called ‘Emoji’ (!!! the way I cringed !!!); ‘the’ Tumblr (yeah, I’m never letting that go); Nora unironically saying ‘OMG’ in a verbal conversation; the absolute LACK of One Direction references (see, this is why I love John Green); amongst others.
Simon’s got zero personality outside of his sexuality. In case you didn’t catch it the eight thousand times it was mentioned, Simon is gay. And… that’s about it.
Leah’s annoying and yet I’m ashamed to say I can sort of see where she’s coming from (I’ve had a long and illustrious history of being left out and ignored by my friends, but this is neither the time nor place to discuss my childhood trauma, so I’ll leave it at that). Her enmity with Abby was unnecessary and uncalled for. Nick’s… a Jewish guitarist? And that’s about it? Abby’s cute and quirky and lovable and I love her. Martin’s a bag of dicks plus more. It was pretty obvious to me who Blue was; if you’ve read a YA book, ever, it’s the easiest thing to guess.
The characters were painfully one-dimensional. I can imagine them existing in that particular story, but I couldn’t tell you a single thing about them outside of it. It’s like they don’t exist outside of those pages- they couldn’t be actual people, if that makes sense (it probably doesn’t, but humor me).
The family dynamic between the Spiers was believable and pretty well-written (says me, who has zero siblings). I liked how the diversity didn’t feel contrived- just enough information to tell you that Abby and Bram were black, Nick was Jewish, Blue was half-Jewish, amongst others (funnily enough, when I first read it, I thought the exact opposite). The dialogue between characters felt pretty natural, too.
In conclusion: was Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda a perfect LGBTQ+ novel? I’ve read objectively better works on Ao3 (seriously, those of you who look down on fanfiction are missing out on some quality stuff), but it’s a pretty standard Wattpad-worthy story. It has its issues, and it’s far from the best thing I’ve ever read, and it’s not going on my favorites list anytime soon. You’re not missing out on anything if you choose to not read it, I can guarantee you that. But it’s a decently fun read, and perfect if you want something to while away an afternoon- it’s hardly going to take up too many hours to get through.
And would you look at that- I finally managed to write a review without a single spoiler (admittedly, there’s nothing to spoil outside of Blue’s identity, but let me have this).
OTP Questions 2
Thanks for the tag @addictedtodrakefanfic and @drakeandcamilleofvaltoria
Tumblr media
1. In a coffee shop AU, who would be the barista who keeps spelling the other person’s name wrong?
I don’t think Drake and Riley fall for each other in a coffee shop AU, actually! I know the point of AUs like this are that the couple are soulmates and they’ll always fall for each other, but I don’t actually believe in soulmates, and with these two, I don’t think they would connect in that setting.
If Riley were the barista, I don’t think Drake would be at all memorable to her. She ends up falling for him because of her gradual realization that she can be completely herself around him, and there’s no way Drake is opening up to a coffee shop employee. So Riley would just write his very simple name and move on to the next customer.
If Drake were the barista, Riley would just be that annoying customer who was always distracted on her phone or chatting with a friend who would miss her name being yelled out or be slow to order. So maybe he would misspell her name as a petty little dig? We’ll go with that!
2. How would they describe one another’s sense of humor?
They both would say the other is very sarcastic, but Drake would also describe Riley as having a bit of a goofy, zany streak.
3. How do they calm one another down?
When Drake’s riled up, he’s a pacer and a ranter, often getting flustered and barely spitting out complete sentences. Riley will just sit there and listen for a few minutes while he lets it all out, then she’ll ask if he wants to drink some whiskey. Usually, they then kind of cuddle and drink together, sometimes even getting a little tipsy, and it mellows Drake out. If Drake is super pissed off, he views Riley’s offer as a dig at his drinking habits. This doesn’t happen often, but when it does, Riley just leaves the room and let’s him cool down. He’s usually looking for her within the next 30 minutes to apologize for snapping at her.
When Riley’s angry, Drake usually has no desire to calm her down. He kind of likes angry Riley, and he usually feels her anger is warranted, so he just listens in and enjoys her profanity-filled comments. If she’s angry at him, he tends to get defensive and might snap back, so after they both say a couple of nasty things in frustration, he usually removes himself from the situation so as to not say anything he would really regret. She self-calms better than he is able to calm her in those situations.
4. Your OTP goes to a carnival, where would they spend most of their time?
They both enjoy the rides (the wilder and more intense, the better). They also like to just stroll around and snack on fried food. They have learned to avoid the games for the most part. They both are too competitive to handle the fact that those games are basically rigged. At various points, they both have yelled at the game operator for games they “should have won.”
5. Who is most likely to blush when complimented?
Drake - he just isn’t used to compliments and they always catch him a bit off guard.
6. What is one thing about their partner that they love?
Drake loves that Riley has this fierce sense of right and wrong and she isn’t quiet about it. Unless she’s literally being paid to be nice to someone, she’ll call people out on crap to their faces. In a world where he feels that so many people are fake, she is honest and real. It blows his mind that Liam fell for her without seeing this side of her, because in his mind it’s one of her best qualities.
Riley loves that Drake wants to take care of her. Even though it annoys her sometimes, because she took care of herself just fine for years before she met him, overall it’s nice to feel like a priority to someone for the first time in her life. Plus, she kind of likes that their baggage is very similar, so she knows she can do the same for him.
7. What do their closets look like? Ex- Do they share? Does one over flow into the other’s?
Drake owns the minimal amount of clothing and it’s almost all standard basics. He willingly shares his shirts/sweatshirts with Riley (he likes seeing her all relaxed in his clothing) until one day he realizes she’s not just wearing his stuff and putting it back in his drawers or his side of the closet - she’s keeping it in her drawers or her side of the closet. This causes a little spat and after some flirting from Riley, they decide they’ll do a poker night where the stakes are for true ownership of each sweatshirt/shirt.
Riley has more clothing than Drake, so the closet and dresser breakdown tends to be about 2/3rds of the space is for Riley’s clothing, 1/3rd for Drake’s.
8. If they made a playlist for one another, what would their playlists look like?
Riley has pretty diverse musical tastes, so anything she would make for him would have a variety of songs and wouldn’t really go together at all (some pop, some rock, some R&B, some metal, some hip hop, etc and fast songs immediately transitioning to acoustic ballads).
Drake likes alternative rock and classic rock. His playlists at least tend to have a nice flow to them (after all, he has DJ’d for Beaumont Bashes in the past)
9. Who said ‘I love you’ first?
In canon, Riley beat him to it after he was shot. In It Couldn’t Wait Another Moment, Drake says it first.
11. What type of pet(s) would your OTP adopt?
Drake would prefer a larger dog, but he’s fine with the corgis, particularly in It Couldn’t Wait Another Moment, since they are living in small apartments.
12. What article of clothing do they steal from one another?
Riley steals shirts and sweatshirts to relax in at home. Drake doesn’t purposely steal them, but he ends up with tons of bobby pins in his pockets, either because she messed with her hair and took it down at an event and tucked the bobby pins there, or because he accidentally removed them when he ran his fingers through her hair.
13. What was the most thoughtful gift they got for one another? How did one another react when receiving the gift?
In the canon universe, the gift that Riley found the most thoughtful was when he bought her basically every product in her favorite scent from Bath and Body Works. She’d always worn this peach body spray, but in her early days in Cordonia, some of the women had trash talked her cheap perfume. So, after she became a duchess and had money at her disposal, she picked out a more expensive designer perfume. But Drake didn’t like that she didn’t smell like she always had before, so thinking she’d just run out, he figured he’d track it down for her, and since he didn’t know if it was lotion or shower gel or body mist she used, he just kind of bought the whole product line. To Riley, this was just further confirmation that she didn’t have to change herself at all to be with Drake, that he’d always wanted her exactly as she was.
Riley’s most thoughtful gift to Drake happens in the It Couldn’t Wait Another Moment universe, and it isn’t a physical gift, it’s an action she takes for him. It’s kind of a plot point in the first couple chapters of the sequel I’m working on, so I’m not going to describe it here. Maybe I’ll remember to update this after I post that chapter, hahaha.
14. Who is happier when they are out in nature?
Drake. Riley enjoys camping with him well enough, but she’s a born and raised city girl and would never choose to go camping or hiking without him.
15. Do either of them avidly follow a celebrity and/or fandom?
Not really. Drake likes the big superhero blockbusters, but he’s not an avid fan who’s going to midnight showings.
Note
You're called Future Smash memes-- can you see into the future of my universe? We just had 6 more character slots announced for our game, meaning there are 6 we dont know who they'll be! Do you have any insight? Or at least a prediction o'wise one?
Hmm. You know, I’ve been told that your timeline is the “main” one, and therefore is very tricky to predict and deal with. It may not be much, but I guess I’ll give my two cents on who I think the final six DLC slots for this timeline will be.
First of all, it’s important to remember that these choices were made by Nintendo, not Sakurai. I think that’s the reason why we got Sans and Cuphead miis in this timeline rather than full on fighters: for one reason or another, Nintendo didn’t want them (or at least, didn’t want them as much as the chosen fighters). Sakurai has said that he’s an avid fan of Undertale and Cuphead, so this makes sense. Then again, he’s also an avid Persona fan and I still don’t get why Nintendo would’ve chosen it of all franchises. Don’t get me wrong, Persona looks great and all (never played it myself), but it’s not very…Nintendo, y’know?
With that in mind, I think it’s safe to say that we won’t be getting an indie rep. Nintendo currently doesn’t seem to be very open to the idea of full on indie reps, so that means that characters like Hat Kid probably won’t get in (maybe as a mii costume, though aHiT isn’t as well known for its music as undertale and cuphead are, so I don’t think it would be a deluxe costume). Really, the only indie reps I see getting in are either Reimu or (as much as I hate to say it) Steve. Touhou is the poster child for popular indie projects, even if it isn’t as big over here as it is in Japan. ZUN is also open to the idea of Reimu in smash. The main things that go against Reimu is the fact that she isn’t very well known outside of Japan (and those who do know her often associate her with loli culture, which might be a problem) and because the way the franchise is set up, legalities with Touhou would either be really easy or really, really hard. Steve, on the other hand, has sort of transcended being an indie character. Minecraft recently overtook Tetris as the best selling game of all time, and has become a household name around the world. Maybe I’m just projecting (I’m probably the only person from my generation that doesn’t like Minecraft), but I don’t think Steve is getting in either. First of all, legality with Microsoft would probably be an issue as they would certainly demand more money for Steve than Banjo, who, while a treasured character worthy of his spot, comes from a dead IP who wasn’t had a new game since 2008. Also, similar to former best seller Tetris, I just don’t think that Minecraft’s blocky, pixelated art style and rigid player animations would be a good fit for smash. Again, totally me projecting, but that’s just what I think. I do expect to get Steve over mii swordfighter, though. That makes sense.
Now with my little indie rant out of the way, I’ll do a bullet-point list for characters that I’ve posted memes about on the blog before and what I think of their chances of getting in:
First of all, I think it’s obvious that Raz isn’t going to be one of the DLC characters. Yes, Psychonauts 2 is coming out later this year and the first game is one of my favorite video games of all time and he would fit in perfectly, but let’s be real. The franchise is a cult classic that has never been released on a Nintendo system in any way and probably sold horribly in Japan. Double Fine was also recently bought out by Microsoft which really killed any small chance he had of making it in. Sir Daniel is in a similar position
First/second party characters like Bandana Dee and Impa I think are deconfirmed because most of them are represented by Spirits, and I don’t think that they would “double dip.” And because of the scope of spirits mode, I think it’s unlikely that we’ll get any older characters from prexisting franchises (I say older so people won’t hound me with “WELL BYLETH GOT IN SO”).
We are not getting another FE rep lol. Rip red head merchant waifu.
Shooter characters are in a really weird spot since these games tend to not be made for kids (it’s easy to forget in all the hype and speculation that smash is first and foremost meant for kids), yet have made such a big cultural impact on the gaming scene that it’s hard to deny their “worthiness” to be in smash. Master Chief in particular is tricky to place since I definitely think he has much more character than most other shooter reps (cough cough Doomguy) and could have a more varied moveset than just “gun.” But that being said, he’s once again a character owned by Microsoft and comes from a franchise that up until very recently was Xbox exclusive and (as far as I’m aware, has never been released on a Nintendo system). It’s also important to remember that the original Xbox sold miserably in Japan, so I doubt that he’s getting in either.
On a similar note, I’ve seen people throw around ideas for a TF2 rep. This makes a lot more sense to me than Halo or Doom; the playable characters have much more personality and the cartoony aesthetic of the game fits in way better than most other shooters (cough cough Doom). I don’t know which character would be chosen though. Heavy probably? I think their main problem is that Valve would probably be picky about licensing and whatnot (I don’t think we’d be getting Gordon Freeman or Chell for the same reason). Additionally, I struggle to imagine TF2 without it’s signature dark humor which would most likely be cut for smash
Due to recent events, I do not think we will be getting an Overwatch or any other Blizzard rep.
If there’s one character I’d be willing to bet money on getting in, it’s Crash. While he’s never really been all that popular in Japan, it just feels right to me. He fits in perfectly, he has some history with Nintendo (even if he is more synonymous with PlayStation), and I mean…he just feels right. I know that sounds shitty after having just denied a bunch of other characters in an articulate manner, but I don’t know what else to say. I’m not even that big of a Crash fan. The only thing I can see hurting his chances is Activision potentially asking for money than Nintendo is willing to give (this is why he didn’t get into Pl’ystation Allst’rs)
Similarly, I think Spyro has a good chance of getting into smash, but not as well as Crash. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I always thought that Crash just had more of a cultural impact than Spyro did. I do think Spyro has a good chance of getting in though. Maybe some Skylanders/amiibo crosspromotion? Probably not.
Given how stingy they were with Hero (when compared to other DLC reps) and _especially _Cloud, I don’t think we’re getting another Square Enix rep, be it Sephiroth, a Black Mage, or Geno. That being said, it could’ve all been a long con and the FF7 remake will release alongside Sephiroth DLC with the actual fucking spirit battles that we should’ve gotten. Probably not though.
Dante I think has a pretty good chance at getting in. I think that he stands at a similar position to Bayonetta when it comes to censorship, so I think he could work. God knows that he would be broken if he did get in though.
I’ve been a big advocate for a Puyo Puyo rep in smash, and if we were to get one I think it would be Arle (maybe with other characters on her alts like Koopalings/Heroes). People have already theorized how her moveset could work, and I agree with that speculation wholeheartedly. Puyo Puyo unfortunately isn’t very well known outside of Japan since in the past it was usually released under a different brand (Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Kirby Avalanche, etc). I do think that we absolutely need more puzzle reps than fucking Doctor Mario though, and Puyo Puyo seems perfect.
Professor Layton has unfortunately not had a new game in a long time (at least not one where he has a staring role), and outside of his swordsmanship, which is seen very rarely throughout the series, I don’t think that there’s much of a moveset to be made for him.
I love Ace Attorney, but I don’t think that Phoenix Wright is getting in. I don’t think that Sakurai would realistically just copy and paste his MvC3 moveset to smash and I don’t know what else you could do with him. Also, we haven’t gotten a new international release for Ace Attorney since 2016.
I know next to nothing about No More Heroes but I know a couple of people who will have a fit if I don’t mention Travis. I know there’s a sequel on the horizon but similar to Psychonauts, I don’t see it really happening. It feels to much like a cult classic to me. Once again, I know next to nothing about No More Heroes, so take that with a grain of salt.
I don’t think that any assist trophy characters will be “promoted” to playable through DLC.
And that’s about it. I know that sounded really pessimistic, but that’s honestly because I haven’t the foggiest idea about who’s going to get in. Everyone I want in in this timeline is either an assist trophy/spirit or a niche western/indie pick that I doubt has a chance. That sucks, but it’s just life. As long as we don’t get Goku or Fortnite though, I’ll be happy with whoever.
Tagged!!! ❀
I was tagged by the lovely @thefandomsurfer to tag all of my favorite shows ❀
Thank you so much for tagging me, I'm very excited for this one! ❤️
Tokyo Ghoul / Tokyo Ghoul: re.
Tumblr media
I love Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:re so freaking much, I can't say the anime adaptation is the best because unfortunately it isn't, however I decided to enjoy it for what it's worth, the manga on the other hand is a master piece and I totally recommend it! Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul: re have a very special place in my heart, the whole story is packed with social critics, questions of morality and the representation of different mental health issues that are very familiar to many of us in real life, therefore it's dark, tragic and very raw in nature but that's exactly what I love so much about it. The characters are incredibly well written and you always end up relating and seeing yourself in at least a few of them and their struggles, it feels very authentic, it's definitely remarkable and it creates an impact on the viewer/reader or at least it did on me.
Death Note.
Tumblr media
Oh dear, I love Death Note so much! Where do I start? I still remember the very first time I read/watched Death Note, it took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, I fell in love with the story and the complexity of it, the way it makes you wonder and question your own sense of morality and what's right and wrong is pretty awesome. For a good part of the story I felt rather dived, I didn't really like Light but I also really loved the genius of his character and I understood him and what he was striving for, however I knew it wasn't right and Light wasn't meant to be the white knight or the hero but rather the antagonist. The whole cat and mouse situation going on between L and Light was just so brilliant, so intriguing, I was hooked. I love L so much, also Near and Mello and quite frankly I love every single character in some way, they all played an important role. Death Note truly is a work of art and I loved it all the way from the start to the very end.
Attack On Titan.
Tumblr media
I love Attack On Titan, both the anime and manga are brilliant, I love it how the story is so consistent and so well written from the very beginning, everything is connected and it's just absolutely genius. I believe Eren might be one of the best anime/manga protagonists of all time, all he's been through, how he orchestrated everything, all his efforts to get to that freedom he's been striving for from the very start of the story is impressive, his character development is outstanding and what can I say? I just love Eren, to be honest every single character is so beautifully written and I could just go on and talk about each of them individually but let's not do that or else this will get way too long for anyone to read it aha. Attack On Titan touches many sensitive topics and for that reason it is very impactful and completely and utterly worth it!
Black Butler.
Tumblr media
I love everything dark, supernatural and gothic themed, I've also always loved everything about the Victorian era in England so of course when I heard of Black Butler I just really had to read/watch it for myself. I fell in love with it almost instantly, it just had a certain aura to it that peaked my interest, I thought it was everything I expected it to be and more, dark, gothy and with a good bunch of supernatural elements. I found the story very touching, tragic and intriguing with pretty interesting plot twists, there's also a good dose of humor which I appreciate. I should also mention that I appreciate Yana Taboso's work a whole lot, I think she's incredibly talented not just as a writer/storyteller but also her character designs are just fantastic, every character she creates is always so aesthetically pleasing, unique and detailed, matching the theme and their personalities perfectly. Quick disclaimer! The first season doesn't entirely correlate with the manga and the second season was entirely made up and does not follow the manga at all, I still did enjoy it as a separate piece of Black Butler content though. The third season is my personal favorite because I love love love the Noah's Ark Circus arc, it's fantastic, there's also a movie called Book of the Atlantic that covers another really awesome arc of the manga and some really cool OVA's totally worth watching (especially Book of Murder because it covers an arc of the manga), I've lost track of how many times I've rewatched it all! I love every single character and I'm definitely very glad I found and got into Black Butler.
Blue Exorcist.
Tumblr media
I first got into the manga and I loved it so much that it didn't take me long to binge watch the entire anime (or what's currently available at least) however, the second half of the first season of Blue Exorcist does not follow the original source material, I did enjoy it nonetheless, it was an interesting alternative ending for sure but I still prefer how the manga is developing much more, I loved the second season and I just hope to one day see all the manga arcs animated! Blue Exorcist is awesome, it's fun, emotional, with a very compelling story line and surprising plot twists. The way the series handles and showcases familiar relationships and friendships feels very real and the characters are relatable, it's impossible not to get attached to them. Well, I just really love it and totally recommend it! Ohh there's also a pretty awesome movie!!!
My Hero Academia.
Tumblr media
I got into My Hero Academia through my brother actually, he was reading it and I was looking for something new to read and watch too and that's when he suggested I start MHA, I got hooked pretty fast, it's pretty entertaining, I like how unique everyone's quirks are and how they seem to somewhat influence their personalities. There's a lot of emotion, characters that have been through a lot so it's hard not to feel sympathetic, especially if you've experienced similar things yourself, It didn't take long for me to start relating to certain characters and get attached to them, building my own theories and overall it's a fun ride!
One Punch Man.
Tumblr media
OKAY, One Punch Man is My fiancé's favorite manga/anime series and he is a huge fanboy so it was inevitable aha. I got into it through him, at first I wasn't very optimistic about it, it didn't seem like my cup of tea but boy was I wrong! I ended up loving it and becoming a huge fangirl myself, it only took me a few weeks to catch up with the manga and finish the first season, the second season aired recently and we've also already finished it. One Punch Man is packed with action, adventure and lots of good humor, it's awesome!
Parasyte.
Tumblr media
I love Parasyte a great deal, it's such a great manga/anime series especially if you're a fan of Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul: re, I feel like it's rather underrated though so I totally recommend it! It'll take you on a wild, very emotional rollercoaster ride from the beginning to the end, it's impossible not to get a little emotional here and there while watching or reading it. There's a lot of depth and detail in the story, it questions humanity and our true nature as individuals and as a society, it makes you wonder episode after episode or chapter after chapter, it's very raw and impactful, I think everyone sees little fragments of themselves in every character, it's incredibly relatable.
Yuri on Ice.
Tumblr media
Oh dear, I love Yuri on Ice so much!!! I found this anime so heartwarming, I loved how pure the relationship between Yuri and Viktor was, their development felt very real, they truly cared for one another, I mean it's just so tender and so beautiful to watch, the emotion and the expectation is so strong on this one, also it's good to see healthy lgbt+ representation in media, especially anime. The whole story is just so worthwhile. I loved each and every character, the choreographies were beautiful and so was the music and the overall atmosphere of the series, Yuri on Ice just makes me happy.
American Horror Story.
Tumblr media
I'm an avid horror fan and I've been watching AHS since it first begun airing, it's been one of my favorite tv shows for years and years now, I like it how the show is so versatile, every season has a different theme and explores a completely different universe with new plotlines and characters, sometimes two seasons can be connected by certain events which is always pretty interesting to see. There are some seasons that I like more than others but overall it's pretty good and I love it! On rainy days I really enjoy rewatching my favorite episodes over some hot chocolate and the sound of the rain on my window.
I tag : @hayydith @mirrors-never-lie @waternios @everyone that might wish to participate and talk about their fandoms! ❤❀
The Good, Bad, and Ugly of “So This is Basically RWBY”
(Just personal opinion. I reserve the right to snide sarcasm and shade-throwing to the same degree as the video/channel itself.)
Good
Legit thought they got Lindsey Jones and V/ic on there at first. Spot-on impressions. Proof that replacing V/ic isn’t difficult.
“Tuba that is also a gun.”
Makes a good point about all the side characters, buuuut....*
“Pyrrha....so many death flags...semaphore.”
“Adam, whose Semblance is Being The Worst.”
Yeah, what happened to all of Torchwick’s Dust?
Rick Branwen and Morty Rose vibes.
“Mommy Salami.”
Appropriate jabs at v4 and v5
Why was being turned into birds a bad thing? This was overplayed in the series while the real reasons they should be pissed at Oz are underplayed. I’ll give ‘em that.
The impressions, again.
Bad
Rested on the “pronouncing RWBY wrong” joke a bit too heavily.
*....also segways into how “the show isn’t about the characters,” which is false. Also, they say their favorite character is Neo, and I agree with them big time there, but Neo is also kinda one of those side characters that we don’t know much about—the kind which were derided earlier. Odd to choose a fav even though they aren’t explored like the video claimed they need to be.
Ignores the incredible improvement of the animation and art. But sure, seven shaky dollars mistake-y
Ignores how “magic” differs from Dust and Semblance. “Magic” came from the God of Darkness himself (“my gift to them”). Dust seems to come from the remains of the Shattered Moon (remember when Horned Thanos was super extra launching himself into space?), and Man (“born from Dust,” ergo, the Moon Remnants) has a Semblance powered by that Dust. TL;DR, Magic=God of Darkness, Dust and Semblance=Moon.
Ozpin is morally gray, in the small sense. His goal is to prevent Salem from summoning the gods and destroying Remnant by trying to protect the Relics. Of course, to access the Relics, you need Maidens, and....well, Pyrrha died for his mission. She choose to serve him, but his actions has resulted in the deaths of Pyrrha and who knows who else. He is trying his best, but what he is trying to accomplish is not a mission one can pursue by being completely good. He did nothing “evil,” but morally gray doesn’t mean “doing good and evil things,” it means pursuing a good cause through questionable/morally ambiguous means, such as hiding the Relics inside the Academies so you can use these teenagers as an army to protect them if things Fall.
Ugly
Trashing Blake (Bland?) without actually critiquing her character, and ignores Yang completely (strange, I wonder why....................)
............................
I figure the insinuation that “Bumbleby came out of nowhere/is forced/is pandering” (wouldn’t want the queers to be too happy) is simply something added to this video because they wanted the video to be agreeable to a vocal batch of fans(?). Trashing a popular aspect of a show is bound to grab clicks, after all; positivity doesn’t quite draw. This, of course, ignores the character arcs of Blake and Yang completely (as evidenced by nothing being addressed about Blake except “no likey” and Yang being ignored completely). Blake and Yang, of course, have talked to one another plenty in the series, as well as hugged, danced, pined after, and hugged again. If they hadn’t, Bumbleby would not have been as popular. I love Ladybug, but if it became canon, that would be out of nowhere considering how little Ruby and Blake have spoken to one another. It’s nothing new that a (likely) male content creator has a problem with Bumbleby, but I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they didn’t form these opinions themself, but browsed Reddit and Animo for bad takes to pander to instead. As for the rest of us, we’ll keep appreciating the wlw rep RWBY has given us. ((I say all of this as not the most avid Bumbleby fan. I just recognize Bumbleby’s importance and series-long build.))
Trashed the soundtrack. If you dislike the RWBY soundtrack, you are provably wrong.
Overall, a funny video that had me laughing at parts, and cringing hard at others. So many great points were made, but they were unfortunately bogged down by dismissive non-criticisms. It is meant to be comedy, of course, so supporting arguments weren’t expected. It’s not informational, and I’m responding herein with more information than this video featured, while sacrificing humor. It’s been a while since I watched a video on this channel (kinda forgot it existed). Kinda wish to not to do so in the future, judging by this weird oozy jacuzzi feeling in my stomach after watching it 4 1/2 times. They can take criticism, I’m sure.
I know this video is just a joke and I shouldn’t get so offended by something I love being dragged. But hey, I love RWBY and I’ll defend it, even if I might come off as being more offended than a geriatric white man when told Happy Holidays. Satire be satire, as this post is, as the video is.
[INTERVIEW] KCRUSH Interview with AleXa
Tumblr media
AleXa (previously as Alex Christine) is an American singer and dancer, born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, United States to a Korean mother and American-Russian descent father.
In 2016, she participated in audition competition program Rising Legends and won under the dancer’s category. The following year, she participated in Rising Legends: Season 2, and won the grand prize winner which gave her the chance to take a trip to Seoul, in order to fulfill her dreams.
In May 2018, AleXa participated in Produce 48, representing ZB Label, and she made her solo debut with Bomb on October 21, 2019.
We’d like to thank AleXa and her team for this great interview and wish them all the best in all their future endeavors!
Would you briefly introduce yourself to our readers please?
Hello, my name is AleXa. I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised there my entire life. My father is Russian/American and my mother is a Korean-American adoptee. I fell in love with K-pop in 2008, and that has led me on my journey thus far. I’m signed under ZanyBros’s music label, ZB Label, and participated on Produce 48.
Could we ask what your daily schedule is like these days?
To be perfectly honest, every day is different. However, I can give you a breakdown: wake up, run, practice, eat, more practice, go to the office, practice.
What do you like most about performing and being in front of the camera?
As AleXa, being in front of the camera means that I get to be somebody else for a moment. It’s nice to drop being Alex Christine and step into AleXa’s shoes.
What do you think has changed the most for you since debut?
My passion had grown stronger. This whole process has been like a light under a fire, and now the bomb (pun intended) has gone off!!
How would you describe your music and sound?
“Bomb” itself is a mix of electro beats and Brazilian funk. During my training, I trained in Afrobeats and Dancehall, which utilizes Brazilian funk. In the future, I want to make music with a very globally incorporative sound.
Who do you admire the most in the world? And, please name some artists that you admire in the music industry.
My mother is the number one person that I look up to in this world. She’s been through so much, and persevered through it all. She is such a strong woman, and I aspire to be like her. The artists that I really look up to are Taemin of SHINee, Hyuna, and Um Junghwa.
What is your favorite song/album that you listen to the most often?
I am an avid fan of the Gorillaz, so I listen to a lot of their discography. Also, I enjoy several rock and metal bands. To pinpoint one exact group or song is difficult.
What is your fav food? And why…
My favorite food is probably my mother’s kimchi stew. She cooked it a lot at home, and I very much so miss the taste of it.
What are your hobbies or interests?
My hobbies are writing song lyrics, photography, and make up.
Where do you want to perform in the future? Any venues or countries that you have in mind?
It would be a dream come true to have a concert in my hometown at the BOK Center. That is one of the largest venues in my hometown, and to fill that stadium for a concert would be incredible. I would love to tour South America and Europe next year.
What kind of person is your ideal type to date?
My ideal type is simply someone that I can be honest with. If they can respect me as a human, then they have my respect. In addition, a similar sense of humor and good conversational skills are lovely traits to possess, in my eyes.
Where do you want to go on a vacation the most?
Seeing as that my manager is from Sweden, I have heard so many lovely things about Sweden. I would absolutely love to go to Sweden, when given the chance.
Could you say something nice to the fans, and let them know your plans and wishes for the future?
To my fans, whether you have been with me for years or a few days, thank you for the support. It is an absolute honor to have all of you behind me to lift me up, so I will work harder to be worthy of your love and support. I hope to someday hold concerts in your hometowns to meet all of you and thank you in person. Thank you so much for everything.
Note
I don't completely hate, but have never been a fan of the Noora/William season on OG Skam. Is Skam Netherlands any good? Do they fix all the weird slightly abusive issues with William in Netherlands? I kinda wanna watch because I like the actress for Netherlands!Noora.
**Spoiler warning and mentions of sexual assault in this answer**
I would highly suggest watching both seasons of Skamnl if you haven’t already, but only if you’re okay watching things with sexual assault in them (if you’ve watched OG season 2 you already know about this storyline, and I would say NL makes it more explicit. They did add trigger warnings to those videos though after fans reached out to ask them to, in case you still want to watch but need to skip those clips). Both Suus de Nies (Isa / Dutch!Eva) and Zoë Love Smith (Liv / Dutch!Noora) are radiant mains and superb actresses, plus the supporting casts are so fun and bring a lot of emotionality to their roles. I think NL works because of it’s strong foundation (talking about the NL showrunners, not necessarily OG) and a dynamic cast.
In regards to Noah (Dutch!William) and Liv (aka, Noliv) in particular… (take this with a grain of salt because NL’s S2 isn’t over yet so we don’t know how well this analysis or opinion will hold up, particularly around Noah’s reaction to Morris (Dutch!Niko) assaulting Liv…)
I am an avid anti-William and anti-Noorhelm person, precisely because William reminded me of my abuser and I didn’t seen anything romantic about their storyline. One of the hard things about answering this question is that (and this is true of all the “Williams,”) is that they’re based on such an abusive creep that each remake would have to had changed the characterization and storyline from S1 to really make me enjoy the remake counterpart. I don’t think any remake has done this, to be frank; the baseline is so horrible, imo, that doing so might have actually been impossible. But that being said, I think Nl, Druck, and España changed enough aspects of their William so that they A) don’t remind me of my abuser and B) are actually a bit fun to watch. At this point I’m not a Noliv, Winterberg, or Norandro shipper but they’re tolerable enough for me that I’m not anti- like I am with Noorhelm and the others (at least when it comes to S2).
imo there are a few things that make NL S2 so much better than the OG, and a lot of it has to do with the framing of the story as more about Liv and her growth rather than like… William manipulating Noora and Noora… realizing William wasn’t all that bad? idk. Noliv is central, don’t get me wrong, but it almost feels like a secondary point, just one of many things going on in Liv’s life, as opposed to being the only thing that matters (as it often felt for me during Noora’s season, even with all the other stuff going on for her). For all intents and purposes, Noora’s season always felt like it was about William’s feelings and reactions, not about Noora’s - even her being sexually assaulted was framed as more about how William would react, and then, how he did react. It always felt like Noora was (I’m not talking about her sexual assault here) was a passive player in her own season, constantly gaslit and doing things because of William. Liv seems to have more agency in her own story - she does things because she wants to, even if she doesn’t want to admit it to herself yet.
So with this framing in mind, I think that there are a few major things that I would say make Noliv better than Noorhelm:
1) The acting. Sorry, it has to be said. I’m not sure who directed Josefine (Noora) to look constantly frightened and/or annoyed or who directed Thomas (William) to look like a serial killer but that really didn’t help. I’m not sure what people are talking about when they say Noorhelm has chemistry just because the two actors looks so flat and uncomfortable all the time in every scene, imo. It’s sad because generally Josefine lights up the screen and is great at microexpressions but she looks genuinely frightened or flat in most of the Noorhelm scene that are supposed to be “romantic.” Thomas either looks creepy or bored. In contrast, Zoë and Monk (Noah) I think bring really nuanced emotions to Noliv. Monk portrays someone who seems 50% serious, 50% laughing at everything in any given situation, and I think he brings something fun to Noah. Even in Noah’s creep moments (like when he keeps showing up at Liv’s place unannounced) Monk is so… charming in that role that it’s easy to forgot that this is like… something an actual stalker does and it’s not cute. Similarly, Zoë makes Liv look at Noah with a genuine fondness as their relationship grows, like “I can’t believe I actually like this dork.” Zoë portrays a host of emotions that make sense in the scenes, and is great at showing hints of emotions that Liv feels but doesn’t want to show.
2) Liv’s agency. So again, I always felt like in OG S2, things were happening to Noora or that she was pressured into things as opposed to her choosing to do things. I think NL made a few dialogue and timeline changes to make it seem like Liv had more choice than Noora did, imo. For example, when Liv asks Noah to stop contacting Engel, he says “sure, if you go on a date with me,” but it seems like a joke? And then… suddenly Liv and Noah are on a date AFSGRG it didn’t have the blackmailing/build up that the OG Noorhelm date had, imo. Or how Noah’s mom dies during the season (actually, during the first Noliv “date”/meeting/whatever), and the show doesn’t try to frame him as being!an asshole from that trauma? As opposed to William, who was an asshole because of the trauma of his sister being killed… offscreen…  years ago. But anyway in doing this, it’s Liv who decides to go to Noah’s house and stay over to comfort him, rather than Noora going to a party “for Vilde” and then staying over. There are a few other things but I always got the feeling (which is why it read like abusive) that William was always controlling and one step ahead of Noora. Liv and Noah seem like they’re much more even footing, oftentimes with Liv controlling the narrative.
3) Noah’s characterization. Look, I’m the first one to say being a ~sensitive artist~ doesn’t mean you can’t be a raging misogynist, and I think that’s true for Noah. A lot of his actions in S1 were rooted in misogyny and he never really made up for that. But at least Noah has a personality. And it’s not just being an artist hipster, I actually find him funny and occasionally thoughtful and he’s charming enough for Ralph to like him. I also think he’s more intuitive then William was, just in terms of how he responds to Liv’s reactions to him. It’s baseline empathy but he leaves when she asks him to, he seems to take her fears about their relationship seriously (instead of just rolling his eyes and telling her to get over it), he often waits for her to make the first move. It’s like… from the beginning we know he’s interested in Liv but a lot of the framing is that he’s not actively pursuing her or cross her boundaries - it’s her who comes to him, imo. I actually see redeemable qualities in Noah (again: with the caveat that the season isn’t over yet). I find him fun to watch and I actually smiled at a lot of the interactions between him and Liv. I even thought his reasoning for beating up that guy made sense (the OG bus fight parallel), and I was sympathetic to both his and Liv’s feelings about it. I also think it helps that none of the characters (and, dare I say the show itself) take Noah very seriously? LMAO I always felt like William was supposed to be like, this Unattainable God (ugh) but Noah is just… funny? Like during one of his slow-mos in S1 someone shoots a literal canon of glitter as he walks by! Or how the girl squad keeps calling him “wack painter kid” LOL. This again, has a lot to do with Monk’s humor coming through, but Noah isn’t overblown the way William was, imo. There’s no idol-worship happening behind the scenes…
So with all of this together I think they did manage to make Noliv better because it doesn’t feel abusive the way that Noorhelm does. In the beginning of S2 Noah is still creepy and the show seems to be framing it as cutesy which is my biggest issue with the ship (plus the Engel (Dutch!Vilde) and Noah S1 backstory). But so far, I think they’ve managed to make it something that’s at least a bit enjoyable for me and not downright hard to watch. This is just my opinion, though, if other abusive survivors feel differently they’re also entitled to their opinions! But if the sexual assault storyline won’t bother or trigger you, I would say give S2 a try. NL also isn’t geoblocked and the skamdutch team adds English subtitles right on the Youtube clips! So def watch it on their channel if you try it out.
- mod Jennifer
