Twitchtip hurt. Her body ached with every pitiful step she made, stumbling around the small obsidian pit. Her nose throbbed, the constant smartting that had not eased as time went on, but had slightly lessened, perhaps. And her heart. Her traitorous, horrible heart. It hurt. Hurt with every breath, every wheezing gasp, every single thing she did. The pit wasn't big. Just a small circle, maybe the length of ripred nose to tail. And the width of him too. Twitchtip rasped a faint laugh at that. The guards above her peeked down, curious, but twitchtip just sagged against the wall, not giving them anything. Her breaths were coming slower now. It was only a matter of time. Twitchtip took a deep breath, closing her eyes. Her nose was broken, yes, but she could still smell faintly. The first scent that floated into her bruised nose was that of gnawers. Rats. She remembered a time when she had treasured that smell. When it had been comfort. When she had cuddled up with her litter mates and snuggled against her mother. When she had run with other rats, shoulders brushing as they hunted. She also remembered the fear that came with that scent. But, that too had diminished again. Twitchtip was no longer afraid. Not after meeting him. Ripred. Ripred was cold. Harsh even. But she knew why. She smelled it all over him. Perhaps thats why he had been so indifferent to her. But she knew he had cared for her, in his own way. Had made extra travels that he hadn't needed to, just so that she could spend more time in a nest than just cowered in a cave. Had left food and guarded water sources so she wouldn't have to hunt for her own. Had made sure to shield her from the attacking guards. And had made sure the first human she had come into contact with had been gregor. The pup. His pup, though the old rat would never admit it. Gregor. The pup was kind. Sweet. An innocent boy in a world of hate and violence. But by the time they had met, he had already survived one war. And was still fighting for them in the next. And he was still kind. Had treated her with respect and kindness that no one else ever bothered. Had lied for her, claiming he had rolled into her while he slept. Had saved her. That had been the most puzzling thing of all. He had saved her life. Just because. He didn't care that she was a rat and he was a human. He didn't care that no one else wanted to save her. That it was pretty much a death sentence. He had still done it. Perhaps thats why ripred liked him so much. And had felt safe leaving them in each others company. Added to the fact that the rat hated water and needed twitchtip to keep an eye on his pup. Another laugh rasped out of her at that. The guards began to talk, but twitchtip didn't listen, too focused on her thoughts. Her wonderful thoughts. Of the boy who cared. And the rat who had accepted her. When so many others had shunned her. Her thoughts drifted to the queen. The young queen. Who had fought side by side with her, not as enemies, but as friends. Equals. Who had defended until she had at last fled. Gregor. Luxa. Ripred. Their faces drifted in front of her eyelids. ‘What a wonderful way to die’ twitchtip whispered softly. And as she took her last breath, perhaps by fate, perhaps by luck, or perhaps by sandwich himself, it was their scents that filled her nose. Their scents that guided her into that wonderful paradise. And as Twitchtip approached those gleaming apples, she breathed deeply, and smiled.

I think that my favorite Power Couple™ from the later trilogy has to be Fareed and Seth. The idea of them alone, of this really ancient, 6000+ years old vampire falling in love with this madman scientist who wants to use science to study vampires, who wants (and does!) to revolutionize their world...

I just think their dynamic is amazing. It actually surprises me that, nine years later, I still have to see a single fanart or fanfic focusing on them

I love Percy Jackson. It's the series that got me into reading and helped me go through life. But I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that it's flawless or that's it's absolutely incredible and the best thing in the world. I didn't notice or realize some things when I first read or reread the series bc well I was 13 and 15 with the thinking capacity of mitochondria but with me rereading the first books and with the show coming on, I think it's time to acknowledge the problematic and questionable aspects of the series. And there are plenty stereotypical, problematic things that Rick has written that several creators have spoken about such as age gaps relationships, portrayal and descriptions of characters but I want to focus on one thing now that I've been thinking for a while

One of the things that I didn't notice when i was younger was how American/anglocentralized PJO is - hell, Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase too.

"The flame of civilization moves west"

I didn't realize how self-centered this "trope" was bc I was a kid and had an idealized view of the US as a Balkan person. Everything around me was america centered -movies, books,shows,music,food everything to the point where I didn't question for a second why would there be a camp for Greek demigods in Long Island.

Yes, I know, Rick was writing the story for his son, for an American audience, whatever, but what would happen to a demigod or a magician that was born outside of the US?

I think this is kinda resolved in MC where Valhalla's above mortal ground and there are einherjar from other countries as well but it specifically bugs me about PJO and KC because it would have been great seeing Rick acknowledging the roots of the mythology he's writing about.

He could have just put the characters transport magically or something to a camp in Greece or school in Egypt where the old flame and spirit, the origins of that mythology's civilization was born and not limit it to the west and especially the US

Please, let me know your thoughts on this.

So you sit down next to him and let him read it with you

Double checking multiple times that it's okay for him to be reading this - "are you sure that you're sure?"

Reading about himself from your perspective and how he makes your life better makes him so happy

He also notices how you've kept his love notes and flowers pressed between the pages and the sheer romance of it will make his brain melt

Now whenever he writes you something or picks a flower for you he's thinking about the best way to make it relevant years later, since he knows you'll save them

Journaling started for you as a daily exercise when you were relearning to write

It was Asra's way of giving you a piece of your life that you had total control of, and of encouraging you to chronicle your days to cope with your memory loss

Over time it also became a place to write down all the things you wanted to say to them while they were gone

He's not ready for how often he features in your stories, but hearing the way you describe him as safe and gentle and precious makes him feel so fuzzy inside

The first time she sees you writing she's already asking what it's for

As soon as you tell her it's a journal, she's asking you to let her read it. If it's written by someone as mysterious and exciting as you, it has to be good!

At this point you've known her for all of two days, so you say no

Disappointed but understanding. She doesn't pester you about it, but she makes sure to let you know that she's very interested if you ever feel like sharing

You take your time, but one evening after dinner while you're snuggled up by the fire you'll pull it out and start reading to her

The best audience you've ever had. She is honed in, hanging onto every word while she covers a very happy Pepi in scritches

As someone who fell in love with novels because they whisked her away into adventures she didn't feel important enough for otherwise, hearing you recount your shared story like this tugs on all of her heartstrings

She'll laugh and cry and gasp at all the right moments. From now on, she treats your journal like a sacred thing. After all, it's the most important story in the world

He was already sneaking peeks over your shoulder when he was stuck to you as a not-ghost. Man has 0 concept of privacy

You knew he was looking because he was commenting on your handwriting and gossiping about any tidbits he thought were juicy

Considering how you barely knew him at that point, you didn't write in front of him again for a very, very long time

It actually created a lovely habit - at some point during the day, you'll take half an hour to yourself and journal

It's been months now and you've forgotten why you had the habit in the first place, so when it's raining one evening you just stay in the inn and write next to the fire

The difference in Lucio's approach speaks volumes. He asks what you're doing, and when you tell him, he asks if he can hear some of it

He makes no move to get up from where he's polishing his sword (it got wet)

He listens while you read, interjecting with a comment or two, perfectly content

He's a bit sheepish about what you had to write about him in the beginning, but hearing how much he's changed fills him with healthy pride. Oh, he adores you

Gregor the Overlander fanfiction?! Gregor the Overlander mention!?!?! Tbh it's been so long since I've read it I barely remember it. After Hunger Games' success they need to make a Gregor the Overlander adaptation.

GREGOR THE OVERLANDER WAS SO IMPORTANT TO ME friend I was OBSESSED.

I very genuinely wrote a letter to Disney as a 10 year old asking them to make an adaption and consider casting my new baby nephew and me as a gender-reversed Gregor and Boots I shit you not. I refuse to be embarassed by that, it wasn't cringe, baby me was just That Fucking Into It and wanted to share it with the world lol

My first fanfic was Code of Claw post-series fix-it fic written on a legal pad my mom gave me to use when I was bored silly partway through a day of errands. Complete with fanart of Gregor climbing into a sewer drain and all.

Frankly your excitement bouncing off of my excitement is making me think I need to read it again too, it's been so long. At my peak I could chant every prophecy in the books and tap and scratch messages to myself in code bc I had for some reason memorized the whole Tree of Transmission better than I ever managed to memorize Morse Code.

I'm so overjoyed to talk with someone who was also in love with that series. I completely agree that they need to make a Gregor the Overlander adaption, but also I'm 100% sure they NEED to animate it and never, ever, EVER fucking do a live show. I don't think there's any way to capture the depth and scale of the world/creatures and the differences between adult and kid perspectives of what's going on in the Underland and a lot of the unique features into live action stuff without weakening it, and for me, I felt as a kid like these books were the first and only series for KIDS (not teens) that really really made me feel known as a kid-who-knew-adults-in-charge-can-lie-and-be-bad-sometimes AND as a kid-who-still-defaults-to-believing-the-best-anyway and how those intersect.

I feel like The Underland Chronicles, Ender's Game, and The Hunger Games all are in a specific category of story and boy is that category important. The Gregor books additionally take kids more seriously than any of the others, which was extra cool.

Okay Essay Coming:

I think one of the most central theses of Vampire Chronicles is that people (or vampires) destroy what the want in the (often selfish) pursuit of that desire. In IWTV, Lestat makes Louis because he wants companionship. Louis tells us that it’s because of his house and money, BUT from later context it’s clear that Lestat falls in love with Louis. Mortal Louis also falls in love with the IDEA of Lestat, and says that meeting him was the most significant moment of his mortal life. However, that infatuation pales in comparison to the world that is opened to him when he becomes a vampire. So, in turning Louis, Lestat destroys the love and fascination Louis had for Lestat in the first place.

Then we have Claudia who Lestat makes to keep Louis with him, to make them a family, and honestly this works out pretty well, but eventually Claudia’s hatred for Lestat leads to the family being destroyed. Again, what Lestat sought (family and companionship) was destroyed by the very person he made to accomplish that. 

Then we have Armand first persuading Louis with the mind gift to turn Madeleine and then killing Claudia in order to bring Louis to him because he loves him. Those acts push Louis further from him and destroy the passion Louis had. Armand loves the mortal aspect of Louis; Louis claims that dies when he makes Madeleine, and then Armand is unable to reawaken Louis’ passion and love even after they’re together for many, many years becauase he states that died with Claudia.

Finally at the end of the story, Louis hopes to have convinced Daniel about the evil nature of vampires but instead all he has done is make Daniel want to be a vampire. Daniel believes that if he were to become a vampire he could make it all work out. We’re led to believe, and indeed, it comes true, that Daniel would not be able to be happy as a vampire just as Louis isn’t happy. 

In TotBT, Lestat loves David, wants to make him a vampire, but David denies him. When Lestat becomes a mortal man, he wants to have sex with David, but David still denies him, saying that going to bed with Lestat mortal body would bring back too many painful memories of his own youth. Once Lestat turns David into a vampire, once he finally gets his wish, he finds that David is no longer the man he loved. The very act of turning him into a vampire makes him different. And though David says that he did in fact want Lestat to turn him and was glad that Lestat forced him so that the decision was taken out of his hands, Lestat still does not seem happy with David. He doesn’t like the fact that David is powerful and would challenge his authority in Rue Royale.

We have Gretchen who loves Lestat in part because of his unusual demeanor. He tells her all about himself and she seems to believe him and accept him. Then when he returns to her in his true vampire shape, she is terrified and pushes him away. 

This theme also comes up in Blood and Gold. In pursuing Pandora, Marius pushes away Bianca, the person with whom he’d had an admittedly happier relationship. Then, because of his grief over her leaving, he misses the letter that Pandora left for him which could have brought them back together for good. 

I haven’t reread the rest of the books so I can’t think of all the details of them, but of course we have Gabrielle and Claudia, both made by Lestat because he loves them, and he loses them both. We have Armand turning Daniel and that changing their relationship.

This message, I think, is that when we seek something blindly, we will often destroy our chance of ever reaching it, and when we are looking in on a life we think we want, once we have that life it will never be what we expected.

The eternal fucking tragedy of Jupiter Ascending is that the wider world doesn't love it like we do. Does it have every single thing that turns my crank, id-wise? Sure! Does it have gorgeous over-the-top sequined costumes and extravagant set pieces that remind you at every minute that this movie specially thanked Swarovski Crystal in the credits? Sure! Does it have theeeee single most pinpoint reading of MY PERSONAL FEMALE GAZE that Channing Tatum has ever done? (sorry mister Magic Mike, but you do not even come CLOSE to "may I kill him?" in terms of sexy) SURE! Was this movie a commercial or critical success? Absolutely not 😔

There isn't, as far as I'm aware, an art book. There isn't an official novelization. There isn't even an actual script posted to the usual internet databases that isn't just an automatic shitty talk-to-text rendition of the movie dialogue. There are concept art paintings and old cast interviews floating around, and this auction website where the Wachowskis auctioned off some of the props from the movie, but as far as canon resources and extra material beyond the movie itself there isn't much. A quick duckduckgo search would probably be more helpful to you than anything else, if any of the websites still have the articles up - it WAS eight years ago, and doesn't that just break my fucking heart.

My corner of tumblr LOVED this movie. In 2015, there were TONS of posts gathering interviews, posting concept art, making cosplays, all the signs of a small but healthy fandom ecosystem. However, we call this the blue hellsite for a reason - not all of those resources are still there, and the ones that survived time and incompetent archival site coding are probably difficult to find. I would definitely recommend trawling the JA tags of all the blogs I tagged at the start of this post, as JA introduced me to two of my longest and most beloved of all mutuals. ALL of their insights were key to A Fine Chain.

There is also my own jupiter ascending tag and my more specific jupiter ascending meta tag, although I don't know how bored you are lol. The general JA tag is 105 pages - I would almost recommend just starting at page 105 and working forward from there since it chronicles my descent into kinky space angel werewolf brain rot pretty nicely. There are also my ao3 bookmarks for JA.

I WILL SAY that it has been 8 years, and I have changed into a very different person than the one I was when I first saw this movie. I don't REGRET the first few chapters of A Fine Chain, or any of my breathless meta posts, but I do think that if I were to write any of them over again, I'd hope that my writing style has matured and I'd have lots more extra material to draw from. Actually graduating from law school, writing long fic in another fandom, and generally percolating more as a person has given me lots of new perspectives on JA that make it more interesting even as I still enjoy it (for example, HBO's Succession is ODDLY RELEVANT and I wish there were more JA fanwriters to take advantage of that fact).

...I hope that was helpful? I will ETERNALLY mourn the fact that this fandom wasn't isn't bigger - we haven't even broken 1k on ao3! But EYE MYSELF am here to discuss JA stuff as long as this weird spurt of creative energy sustains me, and my inbox is always open!
