MASTERLIST
Pairings: Henry Cavill x reader
Word count: 1,638
Warnings: Smut also this is my first time writing smut so ahhh
Summary: You and Henry are finally single do you have a shot?
Tumblr media
From the outside, this house looks lavish. It has been built with wood covered in render and has white pine wooden decorations. Tall, squared windows allow enough light to enter the home and have been added to the house in a mostly asymmetric way. The Autumn breeze had scooped a last lake of leaves around the grand front door. Still scooped in Henry’s arms, you nuzzled closer to protect you from the sharp air. As you were carried down the small concrete path, Henry reluctantly let your small frame back on the ground to retrieve a clump of assorted keys.
From the inside, the vast entryway was silent before a bounding bear attacked your shaking knees. Grinning widely, you bent down to pat his fluffy belly. Behind you, Henry admired the new sight before him as he slowly removed a jet black leather jacket. Placing the jacket on the coat hooks to his right, Henry drop his keys on the sideboard. The sudden clink made you jump to stand up straight much to Henry’s disappointment. Swiftly, moving to greet his pal, Henry amused the energetic Akita with hasty cuddles.
“Now Kal, I need to borrow your friend and I’ll get her back to you later” Henry cooed to the bear as he guided him into the living room. Now residing behind Henry, you started to fumble with the hem of your skater skirt. Suddenly panicking, you remembered how press follow you everywhere as well as Henry which meant they could be outside now. Swinging around to face the door, your soft trembling turned into shaking.
Pulling you out of thought, Henry snaked his arms around you from behind and brought his mouth teasingly to your ear. The warm breath sent shivers to your core. You feel safe yet completely exposed at the same time. Bitting your lip gently, your body falls into the deep musk of the burly man. All insecurities flow out of your body like a wave of relief.
“Henry, I… I think I’ve.. urm” your fear of relationships after your ex had only worsened but you needed this. He could tell you had reservations about commencing a relationship more than friends as it could risk all you’d built together. Relinquishing you from his grasp, Henry swirled you around like an eloquent ice skater.
“We can talk and I’ll fix you some breakfast or coffee,” Henry spoke softly while lifting your chin. Fixating on his warm honey eyes, you tried to nod but his warm hand restricted the movement of your chin. He chuckled softly before heading across the vast hallway to a neatly kept kitchen. Being the perfect house guest, you slipped off your dainty ballerina pumps. Carefully and cautiously, you feet followed the ghost of henry’s movements. Along the way you smiled as you spotted his discarded timberland boots.
Allured by the sweet sent of freshly ground coffee, you realised that he must have anticipated that you’d agree to come home with him. He knew how your mind worked and it drove you crazy. Like a mouse you creeped up behind the work of god. Unfortunately, you were caught by a smirking Henry rest beside two freshly made coffees. Mercilessly, the muscular adonis ravished your neck with sweet pecks.
“I need to sa- mmmm” melting into the sensual act, your words were swapped with delightful whimpers. The sweet noise halted as Henry loomed over your clavicle; gracefully, his eager hand was stroking small circles to the small of your back.
“I think that I have feelings for you… urm like not friends…like more int-“ pausing when the graze of Henry’s voluptuous lips were just within reach, your mind was racing- burning like the soft spot that sat between you legs.
“Think or know?” His husky tone sparked an exquisite roaring flame in the depths of your womb. To build up your courage, you pressed your foreheads together like a mating lioness.
“I know… and I need you,” Henry growls in at your answer like a prima mate. Desperately, the husky animal ambushed your pillow lips as your bodies yearn for each other. You hum as his hands pull your body to cling to him. Gasping softly as he sucks on your bottom lip, you moth gapes open allowing a perfect passage for Henry’s wandering tongue. God why did you wait so long? His talented lips steal dirty whimper which distracts your senses from the wandering hand which slips beneath your knitted top. Carefully, exploring the roundness of your perky breasts, Henry growled at meeting your erect nipples. His member grew painful hard. You’d both waited a long time.
“Bed!” You mewled. Of which he hastily complied as he rushed you up the hard oak staircase. With each step of the stairs, you felt the overwhelming bulge of Henry’s desire. Colliding with the closed door, your kissed grew desperate as Henry forcefully broke open the door. This man. The hard tent in his pants jerked into your clothed core. Frantically, Henry threw you on to the quilted four-post bed. When you get back to this moment again, your sure he’ll utilise all four posts. Sensually, Henry hovers over your lower half as he slips down the suede skater skirt. You breath hitches as his warm breath attacks your exposed upper thighs.
Trailing up to your apex, Henry litters you with butterfly kisses while using his soft claws to kneed your breasts. Impatient and aroused, you discard your knitted top and comfy bra. Grinning mischievously, Henry parts your soaked panties and dips the tip of his tongue into the river of arousal between your lower lips. While you moan for him, he plunged deeper to draw out his name from your lips.
Momentarily, Henry removes his experienced tongue to free your tilt from the constraints of your soaking knickers. Rip. The dark lace broke under the needy hands of the roused man but it didn't bother you in the slightest. You needed to replace the overwhelming pleasure that was once captivating your entrance. Henry watched greedily as you slipped you hand down to the dripping folds and dipped your fingers into the searing heat. A growl released as your whimpering grew stronger with self-pleasure but it was nothing compared to the sensation Henry made you feel. Sinking his own fingers into your arousal, Henry added much-needed friction to your aching mound.
“Ahhhh Hennnnry just mmhmm make love to me” you desperately cried out. Harshly, Henry whipped your fingers from your vagina. If anyone would make you come undone then it would be him and only him. Vigorously, the thick fingers were snapping in and out of the pool of arousal making you edge closer to your apex. Determined and ravenous, Henry continued to piston his digits as he drew himself up the bed to capture your face in a hungry attack. You used this new position to drift your hand over his clothed cock. Gasping slightly, Henry allowed you access to delve into his perfect mouth. Smirking softly, you revelled in the sweet taste of your core which had invaded Henry's mouth. Curling inside you, the skilled fingers knocked you off the edge.
“I'm...” you tried to communicate but your orgasm ripped through you like a hurricane which Henry took advantage of as he's tongue won dominance in your mouth. Drawing out your release, Henry slowed his relentless fingers as your warm juices trickled down his thick fingers. Pulling away slowly, lips barely touching, Henry looked down to admire the mess you'd created because of him. Gently, his digits were removed from your swollen mound and placed in his mouth to taste his triumph. You took this moment to plan you strategy for attack.
“So sweet and hot, imagine that all over my length. I'm going to stuff you so full you can feel me through next week. You-” even though Henry's words made your core tingle in the second run of excitement, you cut him off.
“Make love to me” Henry did not need to be told again. Stripping to show all, Henry made sharp and efficient work of discarding every article of clothing left on the two of you. He leaned in and pressed his pillow lips against yours as he shifted his hands to your back; guiding you under his godly frame, Henry clutched your body against his. With urgency, the Adonis drove his tongue between your lips and plunged it into your mouth which earned a soft moan from your occupied mouth. A playful glint arose from your eye as your wandering hand circulated his pulsing member.
A small gasp rendered from your lips due to the hunger emitted from Henry's attack on your lips. You emulated this with light pressure and slow(ish) strokes of his length. Slowly building speed, you heard a low growl emulating from Henry. Drifting, Henry's hands resume their position to massage your breasts as his hips buck into your faster strokes. Breaking away for air, Henry rested his head at your neck leaving small sensual nips in his wake.
“I need to feel your walls around me, ” his breathy growl tickles your ear in delight. As you already use the pill, you moved immediately to place yourself in a prime position. Removing your hand, Henry guided his extremely hard length to tease you slick entrance. Bucking your hips, you couldn't handle the overwhelming sensation.
“Are you sure?” Henry questioned again as he stared deeply into you eyes. His honey orbs melted your heart. Placing you hands on his cheeks, you pushed a delicious kiss onto his plump lips.
“Yes, ” Pulling away, you looked deep into the eyes of each other as Henry dipped his penis into the pool of pleasure. Both moaning simultaneously, you moved like a finely tuned orchestra- in perfect harmony with one another. This was heaven.

Not to be your stereotypical second semester senior but EJ Caswell is a bit too busy to be thinking about sports metaphors...
(Alternative title- overcommitted..sounds like a Caswell)
Senior year was insanely busy. Being so overwhelmed EJ had been slowing down over the last couple weeks, but he was brushing it off just fine.
EJ has arrived late that day, which was unusual in itself, as he prides himself on being on time. Holding a half eaten packet of Oreos he shuffled into the rehearsal room slumping on the bleachers away from his chattering cast mates.
“EJ honey great you could join us, you’d think a senior couldn’t get lost in the halls!” Miss Jenn giggled at her own joke as the cast were suddenly alerted to the older boys presence. EJ absentmindedly nodded and grabbed out his script.
“Yeah...sorry..um...where are we at?”
“Page 63” “Cool... thanks”
Flipping to that part in the script, he looks up to take in the scene. Kourtney, Gina, Seb and Carlos are clearly half way through blocking a castle scene- Carlos complaining his arms are tired from ‘staying in character’, Kourtney and Seb working out where they are going to come in from and how to negotiate Sebs big box costume (although it’s proving very difficult considering the rehearsal room is about a quarter of the size of the stage) and Gina is animatedly discussing the scene choices with Miss Jenn.
Within an instant, EJ is startled from the scene as Natalie is beside him rambling something about ‘needing a fill in for cogworth’ ‘went home sick’. Sauntering up with his script, EJ’s vision goes spotted as he gets up from the bleachers. But as soon as it comes it’s gone.
He just needs to get through this rehearsal, then he can; go home, finish his debate speech, go over the plays for Friday’s waterpolo match, study for tomorrow’s maths assessment, start his exam notes, memorise his lines, work on his college applications, and maybe even get some sleep.
Joining the cast he tries to hide in the back corner. Following the basic blocking directions seemed harder than usual, his head had began to pound and fatigue hit him like a wave.
However he continued on, sluggish but present helping them to finish blocking the scene.
Walking back to his place on the bleachers EJ trips over his own feet. Catching himself before a big splat on the floor he is able to avoid the attention of his cast mates. Well mostly.
“EJ are you ok?”
EJ didn’t need to look up to know that his cousin had definitely seen his little trip.
“Yep fine”
“Ok try again but this time make it the truth”
Ashlyn was caring but firm, she definitely wasn’t going to brush it off. EJ could feel his facade fading under her concerned gaze. His voice drops low.
“I-i just don’t know... Ash, I’m trying-“
“ON TO THE NEXT SCENE Gaston and Le Fou, I need you boys to start down stage right”
EJ got up slowly, subtly steadying himself against a chair not to lose balance.
“Nevermind it’ll be fine”
EJ walks off, with that any vulnerablity on face vanishing, leaving Ashlyn’s stomach to churn in a pool of worry.
Being an after school rehearsal, most of the cast heads off after they start rehearsing the next scene as it only has Gaston and Le Fou. Leaving the rehearsal room with just Miss Jenn, Big Red, EJ, Ashlyn and Gina (the latter two who were waiting on the senior for a ride home).
EJ and Big Red slowly work through the dialogue, the scene is about as smooth as a clunky old railway track. After running it twice EJ feels like his words are melding into one. But pushing through, based off his poor entrenched habits, EJ made it through another run through of the scene.
“Um can we take a five?”
Miss Jenn looks at the senior perplexed, he’s never asked for a five. Ever.
“EJ honey is everything ok?”
“Hm, yeah just need a sec”
EJ’s exhausation catches up with him, the light seems to highlight the bags under his eyes. He drops onto the bleachers, resting his head in his hands he closes his eyes for a second.
“Miss Jenn, EJ doesn’t look so good maybe you guys should wrap this up for today-”
“Ash I’m-“
“No. You look exhausted! You barely have the energy to stand up for 10 minutes”
Ashlyn moves to grab him his drink bottle but runs into his iced coffee and Oreo packet first. She flinches. Her cousin never drinks coffee unless he purely needs the caffeine.
EJ freezes she moment he realises she’s seen it.
“When was the last time you slept?!”
All eyes are on him.
“James” His head snapped up. But he couldn’t look his cousin in the eye. Because then she’d see his eyes are glassy with unshed tears. His overwhelmed thoughts race through his mind.
“Ok I think we’ll pick this up next rehearsal, please be safe getting home and get some rest”
The four students start to pack up their bags, Ashlyn asking her boyfriend to give them all a lift. Turning to her cousin, helps him finish packing his stuff.
“You can stay in the guest room, we’re having lasagna tonight”
EJ too tired to protest, walks past his Jeep in the parking lot to get in a smaller orange bug car. He’ll have to come back for it tomorrow because there’s no way he could drive safely in his tired state.
The car ride home was eerily quiet, Ashlyn day in the passenger seat next to Big Red. He drove to Ashlyn’s house like a routine he knew by heart. Gina keep flicking worried glances at EJ but the senior didn’t even notice, having closed his eyes and resting against the window the moment he entered the car.
“Thanks for the ride Biggie”
Gina gentley nudged EJ and his eyes were open in an instant.
“Thanks Red” He mumbled as he got out of the car.
“No worries, take care guys”
As the orange car was disappearing into the distance, Ashlyn unlocked the front door. Gina and EJ follow her into the house.
“James lets go the living room”
EJ follows Ashlyn to the couch, and Gina continues past to grab a drink of water from the kitchen.
“What’s going on?”
Ashlyn puts a hand on his shoulder and gently squeezes it, grounding him and reminding him that she’s here to listen. He looks at the faded colourful rug and his words begin to vomit out softly.
“I’m just trying to get it all done ...and um.. for weeks I just never seem to have enough time, and I still have to do my study notes and finish my assessment and college apps tonight... but I’m just so tired...”
His voice cracks and the wall behind his eyes begin to break.
“I have to stay up so late, to get everything I have to all done...and then polo practice at the crack of dawn... i don’t know.. I just can’t... let anyone down..”
Ashlyn pulls EJ in tightly. His body wracked with sobs, her heart breaks as she hasn’t seen him like this in a long time. Gina initially freezes entering the room just as the senior had begun to cry but soon shifts over beside them engulfing them both in a hug.
Grabbing some tissues and a sip of water he’s able to stop his crying but his tense shoulders give away his overwhelmed mind.
“it will be ok, we’ll work this out. Everyone else will understand if everything is not done right now. You’ve got to take better care of yourself, what matters is if you are ok”
Gina nods in agreeance with Ashlyn as she comforts EJ.
“But for now you need to take a break, just have a quick nap before dinner in the guest room-“
“But I have to-“
“No James you need a rest, all this stuff can come later”
He sluggishly gets up heading for the guest room mumbling a “thanks Ash” as he retreats to his long awaited rest.
After he closes the door, Ashlyn lets out the breath she had been holding. She was convinced they would have to put up more of a fight to get him to go to sleep, but the fact that they didn’t was almost more concerning.
“He did seem a little bit off earlier in the week but yeah I had no idea that this was under the surface”
Gina says to break the silence created by her and Ashlyn’s shocked worry.
“Yeah he’s always been pretty good at bottling this stuff up, definitely a Caswell skill”
Ashlyn starts to pick up the tissues heading to the bin in the kitchen. Both the girls enter the kitchen to finish heating up the leftover lasagna they made yesterday.
While cooking the veggies the girls trade stories of earlier in the day and discuss the spotting of Miss Jenn and Mr Mazzarra at Sliced on Valentine’s. Just as they’re plating up, EJ reappears. He looks somewhat disheveled, wearing sweats and his usually spiked hair is messy like a 2012 Bieber hairstyle. His contacts are long gone being traded for his wide framed glasses.
“Feeling any better?”
Bringing the plates to the table they all sit in their usual seats.
“Yeah a little...thanks guys this looks amazing”
As if on cue his stomach grumbles with excitement and they dig into the food. The three teens continue to tell stories of their day. Although exhausted, a goofy smile makes its way onto EJ’s face while telling the girls about his classmate in English that tried justify his argument quoting spark notes, instead of the actual book.
Once they’re finished, EJ stacks and clears away the plates. Grabbing her laptop, Ashlyn creates a new copy of one of her old timetables modified with all EJ’s stuff. After cleaning the dishes, EJ plops down beside her and together they start to work out.
Half an hour and a warm hot chocolate later, they manage to finish a schedule that looks like it fit a bit of time for everything while keeping a heathy amount of rest time.
“Thank you so much Ash... I really appreciate it”
Ashlyn smiles back at her cousin.
“Just promise me you’ll take care of yourself, or at least you’ll let me know if you need help”
EJ engulfs her in a hug.
“Yeah I will, thanks”
As they both move to join Gina in the lounge room, EJ grabs his laptop to start completing his speech. Flopping down onto the couch, the tv is turned onto a Brooklyn Nine Nine halloween heist episode.
Taking EJs laptop at 9:30, the older boy fell asleep within an instant. Keeping to his promise, he followed the schedule he made with Ashlyn (most of the time at least) and finally learnt how to ask for help when he realised he couldn’t do it alone. And when he asked for help, Ashlyn and Gina were always there with an extra mug of hot chocolate.
Thanks for reading! I’m open to write prompts or suggestions
(...Also if anyone can think of any better names for this please comment because all my thoughts were low key trash😂)

Past-Present-Future Black Dahlia
Two major tragedies bring Lee Mirae closer to the edge as she goes through the stages of grief in a more violent manner that would affect not only her relationships with her boyfriend Jeong Yunho and her half-brother Choi San, but also has her becoming closer with the immortal mutant Kang Yeosang. Fueled by rage, grief, and pain, along with a very rude awakening that has Mirae spiraling out of control and questioning everything she holds dear.
Group: ATEEZ Member: Yunho Pairing: Jeong Yunho / OC Genre: Action, adventure, angst, fantasy
Watch Out! : Violence, blood, death, grief and loss, major character deaths, use of weapons, some jealousy (but no cheating ofc), implied smut (not sure if there is any but i’m putting it out there nonetheless), mental illness (probably?), gambling and alcohol
Anything else? : Mentions of other idols of course as well as other characters. SuperM, Dean, Chanyeol, Zelo, soloist Park Jihoon to name a few.
Author’s Note: So... I didn’t expect this would happen for some reason? But it’s interesting how things unfold when you just wing it. Anyway, more reveals ahead a.k.a Yeosang reveals what more he can do and not just suck the life out of people/mutants.

Chapter 6
Loud yelps of pain echoed what looked like a ballroom found within the abandoned school that Ten created. Jongin was seated on top of an operating table, his injured leg that had a gaping wound was being tended to by another male, wearing a suit. Dr. Lucas Wong, another telepath that also had extensive medical knowledge. “She tore through your muscle and the tendons, this might take a while to repair, the tissue damage is extreme and even if it did, there will be some discrepancy in the weight distribution when you walk,,” Lucas muttered as he wiped the rest of the antiseptic over the wound.
“Yeah, she did,” Jongin bit his lip to stifle the groans leaving his mouth in pain. “Even threatened to wipe out my entire family while she did it. She’s got quite a grip.”
“I’m surprised she didn’t do the same to you, hyung,” Lucas glanced at Baekhyun, who had a brace on his neck.
“Yeah well, I thought she needed to know who was making her suffer. I don’t regret it one bit of course,” Baekhyun frowned, sitting back against the red chintz chair.
“And now you’ve turned her loose against us when we should be convincing her to join our cause,” Mark said. “You chose to pursue your vendetta over the greater goal that we plan to achieve, and from the looks of this, it seems like Ino has already let it slip that you and Jongin tampered with their Danger Room. We aren’t the enemy, the non-mutants are.”
Baekhyun fell silent. “To be fair, it was fun helping them out in their plans, it gave me something to do,” Taeyong spoke, his feet up on the table that had Lucas’s medical journals, making the doctor swat his feet away while he dressed the teleporter’s wounds. “I think she also turned Yeosang away from the venture though.”
“See?” Mark sighed in frustration. “We need her and Yeosang. Yeosang wields significant influence, granted that he practically owns the entirety of Seoul. With Mirae, it’s going to give the venture the added muscle.”
“You mean she’ll be our enforcer,” Jongin chimed in.
“In a way. If people have a problem, we can convince her to take care of it. She’s got a lot of skills, skills that must be utilized. She’s let herself go ever since she got rid of the Utopian cult,” Mark explained.
A portal soon appeared in the middle of the room and Ten stepped out of it. “She’s here. And she’s pissed, and at the same time sad,” He said. He glanced at Baekhyun. “You should’ve kept the ruse going, hothead.”
“She blew up my house though,” Taeyong pointed out.
“You’ve got the money, you can build a new one,” Lucas muttered, dressing Jongin’s wound. “Taemin’s still not done from his meetings, is he?”
“Nope. But I already told him what happened. He should be here in an hour? Two hours tops,” Taeyong replied. “He’s not going to be happy.”
“Damn right I’m not.”
Taemin had appeared by the door, looking evidently pissed off. He slammed his jacket down on the nearby desk along with his briefcase. “Didn’t even give me some time to get my stuff before she blew the place up.”
Lee Taemin was also a telepath like Mark and Taeyong, but his main powers were mostly being able to mimic or augment a mutant’s powers. If Taemin were near an omega-level mutant, he could only mimic but not surpass their abilities completely. Unlike his younger brother Taeyong, who could turn into a diamond form to shield his mind from other telepaths, Taemin’s was naturally present, and he often used it to hide from other psychics. If there were even other psychics apart from them.
Ten put a finger to his lips. “Shhh. I placed her in one of the rooms of this whole...estate. If I were to go to her now, she would hear everything you are all saying. We wouldn’t want a repeat of what happened in the mansion now would we?”
“So what’s our next move?” Taemin asked.
“We call on Ino, ask him regarding what to do about Mirae, and then maybe approach a few willing politicians. I heard not everyone remained arrested after that encounter with Chun Doohwan’s adviser,” Mark explained. “Some are desperate to make a comeback in the political scene. Even after they were exposed.”
“How are you framing that? I’m not so sure people in this country are keen to forget something like what they did,” Taemin questioned. “Actually, people in this country don’t forget nor do they forgive unless they’re like us.”
“You could say the same with everyone everywhere, it’s just that we feel it more here,” Taeyong argued. “Then again, it’s not like they know who we are.”
“Exactly. We should take advantage of the flaws of this society. We’re the superior race, and they will know about their inferiority soon enough,” Mark said.
It was making Jongin think. “Since that could take some time, I wonder what we plan on doing with Mirae? Are we just keeping her here? Clueless? You forget, you can’t read her mind.”
“You don’t need to read a mind like hers to know what to do with her, silly,” Ten smirked. “All I can say is that all of you better watch your backs with her. A person who is grieving over the loss of the people closest to her will not think straight, but a person like her who is grieving over losing three people she holds dear? I wouldn’t be surprised if she does turn around and wipe out your entire lineage. She almost did that with you, didn’t she?” He turned to Jongin.
“How can she do that while she’s over here?” Jongin raised a brow, until he figured out what Ten really meant. “...You wouldn’t.”
“She’s got every reason to hate each and every one of us now that she knows you were all behind the deaths of her friends. With the shield in her mind, no telepath can control her,” Ten pointed out. “Of course, she doesn’t know my affiliation with the rest of you so she may leave me out of this.”
“Bring it on, then,” Baekhyun said.
“Really? You’d really take that risk? I could tell her where your families and loved ones are right now and you can watch them go bye-bye at her hands,” Ten looked satisfied seeing the older male get uncomfortable.
“I’m already dead to my family, what makes you think I still care?”
“Enough, Chittaphon,” Taemin rolled his eyes. “We get it. The only one she can’t kill in here is Mark, but even his own life isn’t certain. We need to control her somehow. We’re not the enemy. The non-mutants are.”
“There is a way,” Baekhyun raised a brow. “Choi San and Jeong Yunho. I’ve been thinking of making my next move towards them. Make Mirae really alone.”
“How much longer do we have until we get there? How do we even get there?” San looked over at Junhong. They were still driving down the road that seemed to lead to the city proper with Yeosang’s help. There was a kind of uncertain quality about the city, as if it was part of a certain time yet had modern technology. The people living in the city were wearing different variations of the hanbok, styled in either coordinates or as dresses and suits.
“It won’t be long,” Yeosang replied from his seat, making all of them look out the windows. “One kilometer more and we’ll be able to find her, or them, or both.”
“We don’t have much time, unless Yunho can teleport us even at this time, by the time we get to her, she’ll have probably made up her mind,” San said.
“When I was at those ruins, what I saw gave me chills,” Wooyoung said quietly. “It’s as if all I could feel from that place was rage and sadness. Junhong, both Hyuk and Chanyeol meant so much to her, didn’t they?”
“Oh yeah they do. If they survived the explosion, you can imagine we’d get things done faster,” Junhong glanced over at them.
Yeosang sighed. “Oh well, here goes nothing,” He closed his eyes and muttered a few words, making others look over at him.
A flock of seagulls was flying out of the way of the van, making all of them whip around to look out the window. Their surroundings changed. They were no longer in the city proper, but they were at a dreary-looking street and at the end of the street was the gates of the school. “...Yunho?” Hongjoong glanced at the taller.
“It’s not me,” Yunho looked just as surprised.
Yeosang shook his head. “Well that spell was rusty,” He muttered.
“Spell? What do you mean by spell?...You can do magic?” Mingi stared at him.
“It’s a gift I try not to use very often. It takes the fun out of everything,” Yeosang casually replied. “I must confess I fear I might be losing my touch with it.”
San grabbed him by the collar. “You mean to say you could’ve brought us there without having to travel?!” He couldn’t help but yell.
“In my defense I didn’t do that when I came to the rest of you,” Yeosang yanked his hand off his collar and straightened himself up.
“You better figure out which side you’re on because it seems to me that you’re buying them some time,” Hongjoong shot at him.
“Give me a reason not to kill you right now,” Yunho suddenly looked over at him. “You could’ve saved us the time.”
“Whenever I use magic, I will need to feed. It uses up my energy and turns me into a ghostly hag,” Yeosang held up his hand, his skin becoming translucent, revealing the veins that were becoming more and more visible.
“You are an old hag,” San pointed out.
“Regardless, the more I use, the hungrier I will get. I don’t think any of you would be willing to give your lives to me, and thus control is needed. It’s one of the downsides of my abilities. That and, I tend to absorb the memories of those I kill,” Yeosang said quietly.
“In that case, you’ve now got a reason to feed,” Hongjoong said as Junhong pulled the brakes.
“All of you have your weapons, I can stay behind and wait. There are communicators with you, so you should be able to talk to me and each other in case you split up,” Junhong turned to them. “Good luck. Get Mirae back.”
“We will,” San nodded and the rest of them got down.
The eight of them faced the massive gates of the estate. “Do we climb over or do we break in?” Seonghwa asked, an idea immediately coming to mind. His eyes and fingertips glowed green, the chains locking the gate coming apart, opening the gate in front of them.
“I’m here to remind you that we’ll be dealing with a few telepaths and teleporters. Be careful,” Yeosang said as they walked inside, a cold gust of wind hitting them. “As much as it pains me to say it, San is our best bet to get to Mirae. I’m sure they already know of his relation to my dear, as much as they already know who Yunho is in her life.”
“So we need to watch Yunho and San, is that it?” Hongjoong deduced.
“Precisely,” Yeosang replied, only to duck out of the way when he felt something strike him. It was an axe, Mingi’s axe, and the taller male himself was attempting to strike him.
“Mingi!” San tried to stop him, but he wasn’t answering and instead tried to strike towards everyone else, making them take out their weapons. Mingi seemed to be in a trance.
“Mingi!” Hongjoong sped around the taller male. “He’s- What’s happened to him?!” He dodged a shuriken that was thrown his way. Wooyoung and San had joined in the fray.
Yunho dodged his strikes with an axe, only to run out of the way when he saw Jongho charge towards him. “Oh no, Jongho!” He yelled, avoiding the spikes that were protruding from his arms and legs. Jongho was also in a trance.
Yeosang took out the concealed sword from his walking stick and knocked Jongho out of the way. “They seem to be under a spell- They know we’re here,” He said, realizing the situation. “One of them’s controlling Mingi and Jongho, or should I say two- Mark!”
A portal opened from one side of the grounds and out stepped Mark himself, followed by Lucas. “I thought as much, Yeosang!” The immortal said.
“Can’t get your hands dirty?” Yeosang cast a spell only for it to hit Lucas instead as he saw Taemin step out from the same portal and Ten.
“Why would I need to?” Mark scoffed.
“We’re not the enemy,” Taemin said, his eyes and fingertips glowing the same green glow as Seonghwa who was already trying to redirect the shurikens and axes that Mingi was throwing while also dodging Jongho’s kicks and punches. He disarmed their weapons, throwing them to the side.
“Where is Mirae?” San asked.
“She’s safe, somewhere in there. But I’m sorry to say that you can’t get to her,” Ten replied. “We need her.”
“And we need her,” Yunho stared at them. “We’re not joining you and your Project Apocalypse and neither should Mirae.”
“Ah, Yeosang told you. I guessed as much, he’s turning into a literal vampire before our eyes too,” Mark gestured to the immortal, whose skin was becoming even more translucent, his eyes turning icy blue in color. “You might as well show them how you actually look after all of that magic, you know.”
“Still sore about Julia the Elder choosing me over you after all,” He said.
“We’re not the enemy as you all seem to believe. Mutants are the inheritors of this earth, we’re all on the same side here,” Lucas reasoned.
“Oh really? Then why is Mirae being kept?” Hongjoong questioned. “You’ve got her, we want her.”
“You’ll have to get through us first, then,” Mark said.
“No problem,” Hongjoong said, before speeding past Lucas and Taemin, knocking them off their feet.
Mark took out a swiss army knife from his pocket and shook his head. “Care to duel, Yeosang? To the death as it seems,” He said.
“I’d want to stick around more, no thanks,” Yeosang sent a hex towards him, sending him to the end of the field, almost knocking into the pillar. Wooyoung transformed into his shadow form, slithering across the ground and capturing Ten, nearly getting sucked into the portal he was trying to create.
Mingi took out his lighter, sending blasts of flames towards  Mark who reappeared, making him fall over, covering his face in pain. “Chanyeol taught me that,” He grinned.
Mirae looked out the window from the room Ten placed her in. She was getting restless. She wanted to know where Baekhyun and Jongin were, and possibly kill them when she found them. The room she was kept in gave off the impression that it was once among the opulently decorated rooms in the school, perhaps a room of a teacher or school head.
“Mirae.”
She turned around upon hearing the familiar voice. It was Ino. “So now you’re here.”
“I am, and I don’t blame you for what you did to me-”
Her eyes and fingertips glowed and she reached into her pocket for her deck of cards. “What makes you think I’m sorry for what I did to you? You deserved it as much,” She hissed.
“Baekhyun, Jongin, their entire group has a cause worth fighting for.”
“And Hyuk and Chanyeol are collateral damage, is that it?” Mirae flung a charged card towards the older male, only for it to explode through him. “Baekhyun killed them, and he killed Jihoon too. And you let it happen.”
“Their deaths were a price to pay!” Ino tried to reason, dodging all the cards being thrown at him.
“They never deserved that! And you know it!” Mirae yelled and a shockwave of energy suddenly reverberated around the room, causing cracks in the windows and walls. Ino saw his face had traces of burns caused by the shockwave. “They never deserved to die!” She yelled again, sending another shockwave that made the furniture burn and disintegrate and Ino felt more burns on his skin.
“You’re becoming stronger, Mirae,” Ino realized as the burns on him were healing. “Remember what Junhong said to you-”
More shockwaves of energy reverberated around the room, the ceiling and the walls already on the verge of collapsing. “All this time I was living with guilt thinking that I was responsible for it, when it’s you- You let everything happen!” She shouted, another shockwave making everything collapse and fly outwards.
“It was the price to pay for Project Apocalypse, Mirae!” Ino tried to reason again, even if he knew it was inevitably futile. “There are people willing to die for causes greater than themselves. It’s time mutants had considerable influence in the world, we have a right to live in this world just as much as everyone else does. Out from the shadows, no longer hiding.”
“What makes you think I was hiding? What makes you think Hyuk and Chanyeol were hiding? Jihoon wasn’t even a mutant yet he was killed!” Mirae threw another card at him followed by another, the second card ricocheting off the column as it exploded, knocking it over.
Ino looked up and everything that was about to crumble down froze in mid-air. Baekhyun and a limping Jongin appeared, followed by Taeyong. Baekhyun released a beam of light towards her face, making her fall over, covering her eyes. Taeyong transformed into his diamond form and charged towards her, Mirae knocking him over before he could strike.
“You don’t even bother to see that your friends are out there right now,” Baekhyun tried to blast another beam of light towards her. “San and Yunho, did you really care for them?” He taunted, only to gape when the beam of light hit the staff she had extended, the energy coming from her being redirected towards him and sending him flying towards the other side, Jongin teleporting in time to catch him.
The whole school burned down into ashes and shockwaves reverberated all throughout the grounds, making everyone in the midst of their fights fall over on the ground from the impact. Taeyong, Jongin and Baekhyun appeared close to the rubble as Mirae emerged from the ashes. Ino had also reappeared, the burns on his hands and face healing.
Yunho got up upon seeing Mirae and he ran up to her. “Mirae! Mirae!” He called out, only to get pushed inside a portal.
“Yunho?” The glow in her eyes faded. “Yunho!” She called out, running towards the portal only for it to close, making her stumble and fall over. Mirae looked over, her eyes scanning the ground for San and getting back on her feet. “San!” She called out.
“Mirae!” San got back up on his feet only to get pushed inside another portal that closed before Seonghwa could keep him out.
“San! San!” She yelled, staring at the spot where San disappeared. Mirae glanced at Ten, who was still within the grip of Wooyoung’s shadow form. “Wooyoung, get out of the way,” She said, her eyes glowing red.
“Project Apocalypse must go online without any interruptions,” Ino said.
“Wooyoung,” Mirae looked over at the shadow form still wrapped around the male. “Get out of the way.”
The shadow seemed to slither away from Ten, transforming back into Wooyoung as Mirae’s staff began to glow the same red glow from her eyes and fingertips. “If you kill me, you won’t know where Yunho and San are,” Ten pointed out. “If you join us, Project Apocalypse, you will have them back, unharmed, not possessed or crazy that’s for sure. If you refuse, let’s just say you will have lost two more people you care so much about. In such a short span of time too.”
“Don’t join them, Mirae,” Hongjoong called out. “Yunho and San wouldn’t want you to join them either.”
“There’s nothing but pain for you if you join them,” Wooyoung chimed in. “It’s not going to end. It’ll only get worse.”
“If you can’t command, you must obey,” Baekhyun said quietly.
The words made Mirae look over at him and she struck her staff into the ground leading up to where he was standing, the shockwave sending the rest of them flying back in different directions. “How dare you control me,” Mirae muttered, the glow in her eyes becoming brighter than ever.
“Mirae don’t join them!” Seonghwa called out, the green glow in his eyes and fingertips.
She ran up to Baekhyun and before he could get away, she struck her staff in the ground again, the impact making him stumble and fall. Mirae grabbed him by the collar. “Could you really kill me, Lee Mirae?” He said. “One of the last in our group, the sentimental value of it all is enticing isn’t it? You don’t have it in you to kill me. You keep searching for a face to blame for all your grievances, when that face is staring right back at you in the mirror.”
Baekhyun’s satisfied expression soon turned into horror when Mirae’s eyes turned black. “You really are a monster,” He said, before disappearing.
Mirae looked back at the group where a portal had opened. “Ino.”
“Baekhyun is part of Project Apocalypse. It is about to go online in a matter of hours,” Ino explained. “Make your choice, Mirae. If you want to see Yunho and San again, if you want to find them unharmed, you will make the right choice.”
Mark, Taemin, Lucas, and Taeyong had entered the portal. Mirae closed her eyes. She could hear Yunho calling out to her. Somehow, she had relayed what was happening to Yunho, who was now also aware of what was going on.
I’m here in this kind of wild west village
There’s so many crows, a murder of crows.
It’s deserted
Mirae, don’t join them, just find me, I’ll tell you where to go
San won’t want you joining them either, and Wooyoung will know what’s going to happen if you do
Don’t join them
She kept hearing him. Mirae opened her eyes. “Keep your word and I will consider.”
“I’ve kept my word that I took you to the place where you will find your revenge, didn’t I?” Ten replied, seeing Jongin limp inside the portal. “You can trust me.”
“Trust, that’s a word that I haven’t heard in a while,” Mirae struck the other end of her staff on the ground towards him, making him fall inside the portal. She turned to Ino.
“You will regret that decision,” He said.
“And you will regret the day you allowed everything to happen,” Mirae stared at him, a wave of energy hitting the elder once more, burning his face. As Ino fell over on the ground, he disappeared.

Heya, absolutely love your writing!😍I was just wondering when you have the time and all, would you consider writing something about rowaelin where basically the same thing happens to Aelin as it did Lyria, but only modern au (Lyria never happened).
Thanks so much, it means a lot that you like my stuff!  Thanks for the prompt.  It kinda got away from me… I got in pretty deep with plot points and stuff, haha.    Based on Characters from the Throne of Glass series.
Warning: don’t let the first half fool you, there’s gonna be tears and pain.

All My Love
It started at seven fifty-nine on a Friday night.
Rowan Whitethorn was hurrying through the City Park cursing at the crowds of people standing in his way.  He should have remembered that the city tradition of open mike night at the gazebo by the waterfront would have made the park nearly impassible.  But did people have to stand so close together?
He’d gotten of late from his at the police station and was a short walk away from his small apartment.  Or what would have been short had the park not been infested with tourists and and locals alike.
The sun barely began its descent leaving the sky graced with gold and hues of pink.  Heat from the record high day lingered, despite being so near the lake.  Normally Rowan might enjoy the view, but there were too many people invading his space.  At least he could be happy that he wasn’t assigned the shift to make sure things didn’t get out of hand.
He moved down the stone path that cut behind the gazebo and took a shortcut back to his apartment.  As he dodged a running child, however, something caught his attention.
Actually, it was someone.
She stood in the center of the gazebo; her long and willowy limbs were leaning against a white piano while she laughed at something her companion said.  Her long, golden hair swept down her back in soft waves.  Even a distance he could tell she was beautiful.  The woman patted her friend on the shoulder and moved to sit at the piano.  And then she started to play.
The notes were slow, soft, gentle.  A tune tumbling forth with careful measure.  The song wasn’t one Rowan recognized, granted he knew next to nothing about music.  Yet the longer Rowan listened the more entranced he became by the song.  Slowly, he picked his way around the gazebo so he had a better angle on the woman as she played.
The sight was indescribable.  In all honesty, it looked like the woman had become one with the music.  She moved with each caress of the ivory keys as though she herself were dancing to the song.  Her eyes shut softly and an easy smile moved across her sinful mouth.
It was glorious.
When the end of the song regretfully came, the park erupted into cheers and applause.  A man came forward and began speaking into a microphone setup.
“The ever wonderful, Aelin Galathynius,” the man called out, his words were eaten by another round of applause.
Aelin.  Aelin.  Aelin.
She offered the crowd a dazzling smile as she politely declined to play another song.  A small band replaced her, three guys and a rustic looking guitar.
Rowan watched as she descended the small steps to the gazebo.  She greeted a few people with a wave or a pat on the shoulder.  All too soon, in Rowan’s opinion at least, she was forgotten to the new beats of a guitar and low gravely notes of the singer on stage.
There was something about her that called to him.  Rowan didn’t know what it was exactly, but his eyes easily tracked her as she moved up the path that led away from the gazebo and up a boardwalk that wrapped around the lake.  Before he could think twice about what he was doing, Rowan followed her.
He caught up easily to her and his steps on the wooden planks caused her to turn around and meet his gaze.  Her wide blue and gold eyes snagged him immediately and Rowan wouldn’t have minded drowning in them.
A slow smile slid on her lips as she eyed him. “Hello.”
She was confident.  With that smile.  With that word.  With that stare.  And Rowan found himself dumbfounded.
“You don’t usually play on open mike nights,” he said.
Aelin quirked an eyebrow. “You sound certain of that.”
“I would have remembered,” he replied.
She laughed and rolled her eyes as if his words didn’t mean anything.  But Rowan noted the soft blush rising on her cheeks.  She was flattered.  Slightly uncomfortable, but that could have been from performing in front of a crown.  Everything else about her welcomed his advances and Rowan took care to read each and every signal she sent him.
“Dorian forced me into it,” she said, “told me it would be good business for the shop.”
The way she casually referenced the mayor didn’t go unnoticed to Rowan, but he found himself more intrigued by the second part of her sentence.
“Shop?”
“Queen’s Place,” Aelin replied, “my bookshop.  And where I teach piano lessons.”
Rowan found himself smiling at the image of her moving through a bookshop, of her sitting with children at a piano bench, at that smile brightening everyone’s day.
“I walk by it every day,” he said.  He wasn’t lying, but to be honest he’d never given the shop a second glance.  What a fool he’d been.
“Well, now you have a reason to actually come in.”
#
Waking up beside her was the one thing Rowan knew he would want to do for the rest of his life.
Curled on her side with her legs tangled in his sheets, Aelin slept soundly.  Her hair was a mess and that was entirely his fault.  As were the growing marks on her neck, her collar bone, lower, lower they descended.
Leaning up on an elbow, Rowan watched her sleep as the early gray light of morning filtered through his bedroom window.  She didn’t stir.  He watched the rise and fall of her chest, how her eyelids fluttered, and the slight pucker of her lips.
Those sinful lips.
Rowan reached a hand out and gently brushed her hair out of her face.
They hadn’t been together very long.  Not when you considered how often Rowan worked and the fact that Aelin ran her own business.  They were often like ships in the night.  But each time they passed by Rowan was filled with inexplicable joy.
Aelin sighed softly and reached a hand out.  Rowan captured her hand with his and brought her fingertips to his lips, kissing softly.  A slow, lazy smile spread on Aelin’s mouth and she cracked an eye open.
“Are you watching me?” she asked.
“Naturally,” he said.  He grinned as she scrunched her nose and grumbled.  When she tried to regain her hand, he tightened his grip and pulled her closer to him.
Humming happily, Aelin tilted her head up to accept a kiss.  A long, deep kiss to be sure.
“I love this,” she murmured against his lips.
“What?” he asked, his hands trailing down her bare sides.
“Waking up with you,” she said.  She threaded her fingers in his hair as she pressed closer to him.  “Mornings like this.”
It was the closest they’d ever come to admitting their feelings.  Even though Rowan was certain he was in love with her.  He had been from the moment he saw her in the gazebo playing the piano.  He wanted to tell her of course.  Wanted her to know.  But he also knew what was keeping him from doing so.
His phone buzzed on the bedside table and Aelin cursed into his mouth.  Rowan swallowed the word, absorbing the disappointment it held before pulling away to check the message.
“Work,” he said.
“I know.”
Rowan looked down at her with her eyes closed and hair a halo on the pillow.  He wanted more than anything to make sure he’d always wake up beside her.
#
Maeve Valg was not the kind of person Rowan wanted to work for.  It took him a long time before he figured out what it was about her that made him so uneasy.  She was driven, dead strong, passionate--all good things.  It took him entirely too long to see her cruelty, her pride, her bloodlust.
“All I’m saying Detective,” Maeve said as she leaned across his desk toward him, “is that your skills and specialties are remarkable.  You’d make a difference to your country if you’d consider my offer.”
Rowan stared at the woman.  She had to be in her mid to late thirties--and yet her long dark hair framed a youthful face, full red lips, and devilish eyes.  This was the third time in as many months that Maeve had tried to recruit him for her independent security agency.  Mostly because his former sergeant Gavriel--damn him--had recommended Rowan for the position.
“I’ll think about it,” Rowan lied.
In all honesty, right now was not a good time to even consider changing jobs.  Not when there was a ring burning a hole in the side table of his dresser.  Not when he’d spent the last four months convincing Aelin to move in with him.  Not when he’d just left her side barely an hour ago and he was already craving her touch, her taste, everything about her.
It wasn’t until later that night when Rowan met Aelin at that fateful gazebo that he was finally able to push all thoughts of Maeve aside.  When he was finally able to smile freely at the sight of her in a pale blue dress that clung to each and every one of her curves.
“Hey,” she said as he approached.
Whatever else she’d been about to say was cut off when he pulled her into a kiss.  His mouth slanted almost urgently against hers and he couldn’t help the way his finger dug into her waist desperately.
“Hey,” he said when he finally pulled back.
Aelin grinned wickedly and he knew she was thinking about breaking into the nearest boathouse to continue that kiss.  But all too suddenly her expression turned serious.
“What?” Rowan asked, heart stilling.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” she asked.
Rowan froze, terrified that she knew about the ring. “I don’t--”
“Lorcan told me about Maeve,” Aelin continued.  She rested a hand on his cheek. “Rowan...that job sounds amazing.”
Blinking, Rowan fought against the rising panic in his gut.  He really wanted to find Lorcan and beat his ass, but he was also concerned by what Aelin thought about it.
“I’m not taking it,” he said flatly.
Aelin scowled. “Yes you are.  It’s higher pay for one.  Better control over your work.  Most of it sounds like a security detail.”
“I’m not taking it,” he repeated.
“Babe, Aelin insisted, “it sounds like a great opportunity.  Why not?”
Rowan shook his head and pulled away from her.  This wasn’t how he wanted to do this.  Not really.  But with the sharpness to her eyes, the determined tilt of her chin--he had to do it.
“Because of you,” he whispered.
“Don’t,” Aelin said, “don’t put this on me.”
Rowan reached out automatically and grabbed her hands tightly in his. “It’s always been because of you.”
And then he was down on one knee while fumbling in his pocket for the ring.
Aelin gasped and whispered his name.
Rowan looked up at her, the ring in his fingers and tears brimming in his eyes. “I first saw you here.  And I knew then and there that I was going to love you for the rest of my life.  If you let me.  Aelin Galathynius, will you marry me?”
She let out a small strangled noise that was a cross between a sob and something else that Rowan couldn’t decipher but the frantic bob of her head was enough for him to understand what the answer was.
“Yes, yes, yes,” she whispered.
Rowan slid the ring on her finger and his lips on her mouth.
#
When Rowan took the job he still wasn’t sure about it.  But most of his friends were on the crew along with two kids who had just come back from Pakistan.  They were given weeks on end together to learn how they could become a team.
Aelin liked to joke that Rowan had gained five work wives now.  Rowan tried to tell her she was wrong but his words held no meaning.  Not when five out of seven days a week any of the boys in the crew ended up sleeping on the Whitethorn-Galathynius couch.  Usually Fenrys.
Unfortunately those nights grew few and far between as the year went on.
“How does Aelin feel about you spending your honeymoon with us?” Connall asked through an earpiece as they stood stationed around Senator Erawan’s reelection fundraiser.
Rowan could hear the grin in his voice.
“Yeah,” Fenrys added, “didn’t even have time to--”
“Stop talking.” It was Gavriel who spoke this time.  Rowan could see him across the hall walking behind the Senator and his wife. “Especially about my niece.”
The twins cackled.
Rowan shook his head and contained a smile.  As much as he’d been unsure about this job--it had given him some of the best friends he knew.
A gunshot rang out through the hall.
Immediately Rowan had his gun unholstered and turned to the source of the shot.  Out of his peripheral vision he saw Gavriel and Vaughn cover the senator and his wife.  Lorcan cursed over the comms.
“Lost him!”
“Got it,” Rowan replied.  Up on the second floor, a glass balcony overlooked the rest of the hall and a shape darted out of eyesight.  Running to the nearest stairwell, Rowan instructed his team on what he saw.
“Wait for backup,” Gavriel ordered, but Rowan was already gone.
#
He arrived home three days later to a royally pissed off Aelin.
Rowan knew it was bad when he walked into the kitchen to find three perfectly frosted chocolate cakes sitting out of the counter.  One had strawberries lining the top, another almonds, and the third a chocolate cookie crumble.  He was utterly screwed.
“Fireheart?” he called out hesitantly.
He heard the bathroom door shut down the hall and Aelin stalked toward him.  Her hair was pulled into a messy bun and bright red splotches colored her cheeks.  Tears rimmed her eyes.
“Baby,” Rowan said as he stepped toward her.
She shook her head and walked around him to the cakes.  There was already a piece missing from the one with strawberries and she cut another piece off and flopped it on a plate.
“I am so mad at you,” she said as she stuffed a large bite in her mouth.
“I know,” Rowan replied.
“Fenrys told me what you did.  Gavriel told you to wait and you went charging after the man.”
“I know.”
“You could have died.”
“I know.”
Aelin nearly broke the plate when she threw it down on the counter.  Rowan stared into her brilliant eyes and waited for his next reprimand. “Stop saying that.”
“Alright, I’m sorry,” Rowan said quietly.  He set his bag on the floor and crossed into the kitchen until he stood across from his wife. “We both knew what the job entailed.  And I had to catch the man.
“I was terrified Ro,” Aelin whispered.  She ran her fingers beneath her eyes and sniffed loudly.  “We can’t lose you.”
“I know,” he said, moving so he stood just before her.  He was going to say something else when Aelin’s words caught up to him.  “We?”
Aelin let out a strangled laughing as fresh tears washed down her cheeks.  She looked up into Rowan’s eyes, one hand going to her belly.
“We.”
#
Despite the chaos of his job and despite the chaos of his pregnant wife--Rowan Whitethorn knew that everything was going to work out in the end.
With Aelin being nearly eight months along, they’d decided together that it would be best to start over.  For Rowan to leave his risky job behind and find something closer to home.  They’d both spent weeks thinking about it, talking to each other, and they’d come to the same conclusion.  They needed their family to stay together.
Of course, Maeve didn’t understand why Rowan would want to leave.  Not that he could make her understand.  Not that any of them could.  Even the rest of the team had understood the decision.  Rowan needed his family.
“Fine,” Maeve relented one day.  She sat behind her desk looking absolutely bored one day.  Running her hands over her desk she sighed. “I’ll let you go, Rowan.  But I just need you for one more job.”
Rowan stiffened at the sheer pleasure in her eyes of what was to come.  She tossed a folder at him.  He opened it and frowned.
Archer Flynn.
A high end hooker for hire.  Known especially for sleeping with Senator Erawan.
“I need him arrested,” Maeve said.  She sounded as though she were requesting he buy lettuce from the store.
Rowan continued staring at the picture of the man. “I thought we were keeping an eye on Cairn.”
“Don’t worry about Cairn,” Maeve said.  “Mr. Flynn is far more troublesome.  Besides, Cairn is going to be taken care of.”
Rowan didn’t like the dismissive way that Maeve addressed him.  Nor did he like the smile that rested on her lips.
“And just like that,” he said, “ you’ll let me end my contract?”
“Absolutely,” Maeve promised.
For some reason, Rowan believed her.
He left with Lorcan the following day, assuring Aelin everything would be alright.  It was only an arrest after all.
When he and Lorcan found the apartment that was serving as Flynn’s hideout, Rowan should have known something was wrong.
The door was broken in, wood splintered across the floor.  A pool of blood was rapidly growing beneath a form tied to a chair.  Rowan and Lorcan rushed to room to the young Archer Flynn.  His blonde hair was plastered over his brow with a mix of sweat and blood.  The stab wounds in his legs and side were less than ideal.  Looking at all the man’s injuries, Rowan knew there was nothing that could be done for him.
“I’ll call an ambulance,” Lorcan muttered while Rowan continued tending to Flynn’s wounds.
This wasn’t right.  This couldn’t have been right.
When Flynn began to speak, Rowan almost thought it was the man’s dying breath.
“S’lied to me,” Flynn rasped, his words to muffled to understand, “to all of us.”
Rowan lifted the man's chin. “What are you talking about?”
“Cairn was always the problem child,” Flynn whispered.  And then with a final breath--Flynn died.
Rowan let Flynn’s head fall.  What the hell was going on?
His phone rang in his pocket but he ignored it.
“Lorcan, he’s dead,” Rowan called out.  His phone continued ringing.
Lorcan reentered the room, phone pressed against his ear.  The man’s dark eyes were wide and a frown deepened his already deep scowl.
“Lorcan?” Rowan asked.
Clearing his throat, Lorcan shook his head. “We gotta get back home.”
#
Rowan had never liked hospitals.
They were death traps in his opinion.  Everyone he loved would always go in and never come back out.  So for the first time in a very long time, he found himself praying.  Praying that for once, he would be wrong.  That for once, something good would come of the hospital.  That for once, he wouldn’t be left alone.
“She was stabbed multiple times in the chest,” a doctor said, “they’re working on her now.  But you need to prepare yourself.”
They baby.  What about the baby?
The words never left his lips.  He couldn’t bring them too.  Or maybe he did say them and the doctor ignored him.  Either way, Rowan’s mind was churning too much.  Something had gone wrong.
“It was Cairn,” Gavriel said from beside him.
Rowan had no idea when the man showed up but he didn’t really care.  He stared at a wall advertising things for sale and brochures for various recovery programs.
“He got to her somehow.”
Maeve was supposed to take care of the man.  She’d said so.  Rowan didn’t say the words aloud.  They wouldn’t do much good.  Because as much as a bitch Maeve was, there was no way she could have predicted this.  No way she could have known that Aelin would be dying.
And where had Rowan been?  Off doing a damn job that didn’t even need him.
It wasn’t until three o’clock in the morning that Rowan learned that his wife was dead.  The baby too.
It wasn’t until three o’clock in the morning that Rowan allowed himself to cry.  Silent tears.
It wasn’t until three o’clock in the morning that Rowan heard the snip-snip of heels across linoleum.  Echoing through the halls.
“Oh, Rowan,” she crooned. “I am so, so sorry.  You have to know I never imagined this to happen.”
“Do you know where he is?” Rowan asked.
Maeve’s brows shot in the air. “What?”
“Cairn,” Rowan repeated, “do you know where he is?”
A smile spread over Maeve’s cherry red lips. “I promise, I will help you find him.  No matter what it takes.”
It wasn’t until three o’clock in the morning that Rowan said good-bye to his wife and made one final vow to her.
He would never forget.

OCTOBER 2TH, 2021.
DAY ONE.
—— I've decided I'm starting a journal. ——
I have never been that good in keeping track or stuff. I get bored, I abandon what I start so easily. It is hard for me to push myself into doing something I don't have the motivation for.
However, I've decided I'm starting a journal. This journal. I feel better writing it online than in paper. When I'm forced into writing it in slow motion with my own hands, I get desperate sooner or later. My mind rushes and the words speed up while my hand is still struggling with the first lines.
I do have a lot to say. About so many things. There are things I'll never write or speak about. The belong in the silence between God and me, the empty spaces where the human mind can't go, that secret and non existence place.
I'm better now.
This imply that I was bad, of course. It's a cycle. I know the bad things won't stop coming, but I like to think that's no reason to stop working on myself. More than a circle this is... A spiral. I'm trying to make this spiral going up. It's hard. Humans can so easily die. It's so simple, so effortless to give up on myself and let the pull of the Earth take me underground. And yet...
I'm better. Not physically. I haven't been sleeping enough or drinking enough water or eating like I should. It's not my body that it's better, it's my mind. I don't disassociate as much these days. I feel present. I feel like I'm my body and not just in my body. I have more energy. I want to do things like clean my hair often and take care of my skin. I want to do exercise, to eat healthier. I feel calm, in my mind, in my thoughts. I need to keep meditating and doing my breathing exercises. They do help a lot.
There are many things I need to work in. My physical health is one of them, but also I need to practice using my phone less. I need to find other things to calm me. I have my paintings, I could practice with them. Or maybe drawing. And of course, there is my thesis.
I've been avoiding my college duties. Again.
I fear the stress or the semester. There's something that's very frustrating to me, and it is feeling like I'm failing at some task while everyone is already many tasks in front of me. Like,,,, hmm,,,, it's like trying on your shoelaces while you're on a marathon. You need to stop and tie them, but if you do you're gonna lose time and they're going to get even farther away, and you're so stressed over it that you're losing concentration, and the shoelaces, and the competitors, and your stress, and— there it goes. It gets worst and worst until you kinda resignate and think "I just need to finish this marathon, just it. I don't want to compete anymore".
There's also the fear of what I'm going to do after I graduate. Work is the obvious answer, right? I should. I want to work. But there's this idea,,,,, listen, sometimes I don't understand people. I'm smart, but not when it comes to normal things or daily skills. The other day I put a candy on the microwave for a minute and I almost burned the microwave.
I don't know how to do any house choirs. Why? Well, because my family tells me I should do them, but the minute I try and do them, they appear and tell me to go away because I'm doing everything wrong.
How am I supposed to learn if I can't practice? But there's still some sort of trauma reaction in me. I fear doing something that can't be fixed while practicing. That's the reason why I fear driving, because I'm terrified of damaging the car (mostly because I don't want to cost extra money to anyone, and I don't have money to buy and less alone fix a car).
So I should work. To gain some money. But let's not talk more about that because I got nervous just by thinking of it.
Aaand I lost track of what I was saying. I'm sleepy. I was supposed to write how today I was better. I downloaded some cool apps, I want to learn how to play the kalimba, I felt pretty today, comfortable, safe. I shouldn't be writing my problems on an online diary but oh well.
This is exactly how my mind works. Now it is bored of writing this and wants to close the tab. I wants to change the song. Meditate. I get bored of things so fast this days. I'm not able to end a whole task if I don't pressure myself for HOURS. I'm better but there's still a long way to go.
I wish I could go to a psychiatrist and finally see if I have anxiety or adhd or if im just overreacting. When I told my psychologist I thought I had anxiety, she told me she would not give me any labels to use, only treat me. I suppose that is good, but a part of my does wish I could know the labels. I don't like when I don't know what is happening. I don't like when I don't have control over the stuff that surrounds me. I don't like being vulnerable or deadly curious.
I haven't been praying that much later, either. I miss my regular contact with God. It makes me feel very lonely and afraid, and very guilty and ashamed. I know many people hate Christians and for a good reason, because many have hurt the whole world with those ideals. And I know for many the way I feel would be silly. I just........ I can't stop believing in him, feeling this way. I want to help others, not by hurting them, but by just standing in silence in the distant with my silly words and silly presence, so if they ever feel lost, they can always find me and sit, talk with me. I love them all. I love humanity so much. It makes me sad. I see the killers and the politians, I see the worst human beings and I think, "I wish you some clarity, I wish you some joy, I wish you to be so full of good things that there's no more evil feelings, just the ability to feel guilty and change, to become a better person".
I'm tired of seeing people dying. Suffering. My grandpa E (the biological father of my mom) is dying. His lungs are collapsing, slowly but surely. We lost my grandma some two or three years ago. I don't think of her as much as before, but I feel it, her absence. I miss her voice and her hugs. I miss the people we were when she was alive. I miss my grandpa H (the step-father of my mom) happiness, I miss the time where my mom's face was not so gloomy and sad.
I'm tired of hatred and anger. I see it everywhere and many who feel it are just sad and hurt. Like wounded animals, they lash out when they are in pain. And I wish I could cure them. Yes, I guess I have a Saint complex or whatever. I feel bad for speaking about how I wish I could save the world, love every human enough for them to feel better. I feel bad for not being capable of doing more.
And the worst part is that I feel like I'm capable of doing more, but I don't do it because I'm afraid. If I wasn't so shy or anxious, if I wasn't so selfish, I could be out there traveling and saving lives. I look at my ceiling in the dark and think if I'm gonna die paralyzed by fear. Or if I'm going to die fearing dying that way, and asking to much of my body and soul and mind, enough to destroy myself.
I don't want to sound self-centered, damn. I am anxious again. You see, I'm better, but it is hard. It feels like my limbs need to move because it is a physical discomfort. It feels like I need to do something, to shake that feeling.
This is a lot for a first day entry. No one is going to read this, just me. And if there's someone reading it, then... Know you're walking over my heart. Every word is war, every emotion written in the moment. I'm laying in a couch with red led lights in a white room. There are some dark brown furnitures, the room is tiny. There's a giant TV on the floor, there are plants on shelf next to the ceiling. The plants are tiny and fake. There's a big window, closed with curtains. There's another high tiny window, and a mini desk that goes into the wall in a sort of hollowed square that there's in the room. There are two posters on glass frames, they are big, they are by the wall.
It's almost 2AM. I hear some cars passing by. It's neither cold nor hot. There's a constant sound, like the one electric devices make. It's kind loud. I don't know if it's the nature or the electric devices. I'm on an apartment. The town I'm in is in the mountains, but a few minutes from a big city.
I'm calmer now. It's feel a little lonely in this room because I'm on my own. My family is on the apartment, but there's no sound to be heard of them. At least the acoustic in this neighborhood let's you hear even when the person some building away is coughing. Yeah, crazy.
I think I'm going to be now. I'm tired. I want to be more online, write on my other blogs, do some rp, work on my thesis, clean my room, read books, watch TV shows... But even when I'm better, I need to be careful to don't pressure myself to much. Too many stimulus and I'm gonna be avoiding everyone again, until I feel less overestimulated.
No more worries. The day is over. I need to sleep.
Goodnight, mysterious person. And if no one ever reads this, goodnight to the absence of and the empty and the memories.

In Conversation with Bruce Campbell.
Below is a short interview with Bruce Campbell that mostly covers The Evil Dead.
The film tells the story of five friends who take a vacation to an isolated cabin in the woods, and find themselves besieged by demonic forces after playing a tape recording of incantations. One by one they are possessed, and Ash (Campbell) as the last man standing, must survive the gruesome mayhem that upset British conservatism and saw the film labelled as a notorious ‘video nasty.’
Campbell spoke about the slow burn success of the movie, the moral ambiguity of the American audience, and how horror shouldn’t be something you’d hear on the six o’clock news
FRIGHTFEST: What were your expectations for EVIL DEAD in the beginning, and could you have anticipated its eventual success?
BRUCE CAMPBELL: Let’s not forget the time frame – its success was a very slow evolution. It took longer to raise the money than we had intended. We went to a different state to film it thinking it was going to be warmer, when in fact Tennessee had one of its coldest winters, and the state we fled, Michigan, had one of its mildest. So right from the start it was all very troubled.
It took about three years to complete the movie and we could not even find a US distributor. We finally got a UK company to look at it, Palace Pictures, and they finally distributed it. We were not even successful in our own country first, which was a big shock to us. It had to happen in another country first and then New Line Cinema came on board after seeing the success in Europe.
The whole thing was very strange, long and drawn out. I think the rights from EVIL DEAD 2, which was seven years later was when we finally got the investors to break even. So it took a long time for EVIL DEAD to be successful - it was a slow-motion success.
FF: From the responses to the film in the UK and Europe compared to America, is there a difference between these audiences?
BC: Well cynically, one would say in the UK they were more at the centre of the fall of civilisation, so they would appreciate chaos and nightmarish imagery. So that would be one theory for it. I think European audiences are more forgiving, whereas American audiences are a little more morally ambiguous. European girls don’t have the moral ambiguousness about sleeping with some dude – like it’s not thought of as being slutty. If you want to sleep with a guy you sleep with him. In the States, it’s this whole dance of should I, or shouldn’t I? Is it right, is it wrong? It’s the same thing in the States of, “Well that woman’s being violated by a vine in the woods, should I leave, should I stay?” Whereas in the UK it was just an outrageous scene and they probably laughed their asses off. So it’s weird, and it’s different civilisations is really what it is.
FF: When you think about THE EVIL DEAD, do you remember moments from the film or do you recall the experiences behind the scenes?
BC: …All my memories are of the experience of filming it, and then the experience of seeing the finished film in a theatre for the first time. You asked a few questions ago what did you hope to get out of it? We just wanted to make a finished movie, and when the film was completed, it was booked into my childhood theatre where I went to see basically every movie from the 70s.
I saw it on a Saturday matinee and there were only about 30 people in the audience, but I thought, ‘Okay, this is it. We did it. We’re playing our movie on our hometown screen.’ The funny thing is everything was gravy afterwards. The goal was could we figure out a way to get our movie into this professional theatre with Hollywood movies, and that was the fun part. So our definition of success might be different than other people’s, and where a big box office would be definition for some movies, for us it was just the fact we pulled it off.
FF: After sitting there in your local theatre, there was then the moment of thinking about what’s next?
BC: Obviously the first EVIL DEAD allowed us to make another movie, and that was the key thing too. We were very concerned about failing with our first movie, and it was one of the reasons why we made a genre movie in the first place. Most of our amateur movies in high school were not horror movies. Most were action or comedy, occasionally a drama, but mostly they were just silly movies, and so we were concerned about our investors getting their money back. We thought, ‘Well let’s pick a genre, let’s pick horror because it’s cheap, you don’t need any name actors and they can be very successful.’
One of the reasons why it was a horror film in the first place, was not because any of us were great horror aficionados. I was a Three Stooges fan, Sam was a big fan of the Marx Brothers, and I don’t think Rob Tapert was into horror of any kind. It was an economic choice
FF: I recall Quentin Tarantino saying that if you want to write books, read books, and if you want to make films, watch films. But could we argue that there are benefits to being less schooled, that allows for a different approach?
BC: …Very often a filmmaker’s first movie is their best because it’s all hands on deck. They go for broke, they don’t know where the limit is and when they should say, “no.” As a result it can sometimes be very excessive and masturbatory, but I thought Sam did an amazing job with his very first movie.
There’s a sequence in there where Ash is going crazy, and Sam stayed up all night doing storyboards for this sequence where the camera was tilted at a 45 degree dutch angle for every shot. I remember at the time we had discussions about whether that was going to be visually acceptable – could the audience even watch what was happening because it was such an extreme way to film. Sam was saying, “Ash is going crazy, the audience should be going crazy too.” It’s actually one of the best sequences of the movie, and it’s one of the most contemporary sequences because it was ahead of its time.
FF: Ideally, you want the film to endure and to engage with a future audience, and to not be limited to the period in which it’s made. Would you agree with this sentiment?
BC: I think nobody knows until the film is out. In my experience a film that is easy to make, is usually hard to watch. And usually films that are very hard to make, are much easier to watch. There’s just something about it when you know that the filmmakers and the actors have really sweated for a project - generally it tends to be better. If you have enough time to sit around telling movie stories between shots, I don’t think you’re working hard enough.
FF: In recent years we’ve seen torture porn and the celebration of violence to disgust rather than to provoke fear. How do you think THE EVIL DEAD fits into a person’s concept of horror who is watching it for the first time in 2020, compared to the context of horror for the 80s audience?
BC: Horror always changes and maybe it’s generational. It used to be the slasher movie, which was some crazy guy released from an institution and with an axe type concept. Then torture porn came in for a while and I’m very happy to see that go, only because it doesn’t celebrate the skill of filmmaking. You put a guy’s dick in a vice and poke it with a stick for half an hour, that’s not really horror. It’s just something you might hear on the six o’clock news.
The real success of a horror movie is getting someone to feel the atmosphere, to feel dread and to actually jump out of their seat. To build to a climatic scare is something that takes an incredible amount of skill between the filmmakers and the actors, and everyone involved. I’m just a big fan of if you’re going to do a horror movie, then it should be scary, but there’s a lot of different ways that something can be scary.
THE SIXTH SENSE I feel is a very disturbing movie, but there’s very little blood and violence in the whole thing. The movie THE TENENT, which is one of my favourite horror movies by [Roman] Polanski, it’s all mental. It’s actually making you think you’re going crazy, and that’s a skill. I’m a big fan of any horror that takes skill.
FF: I always admired that beyond the blood and the violence, it feels like you’re trapped, and you’re slowing succumbing to the oppressive claustrophobia, the gruelling psychological and emotional experience.
BC: The situation was real enough that it permeated into all of us. It was a real abandoned cabin down about a half a mile of road in the middle of nowhere. There was no electricity and no running water. It actually had some creepy history - a woman had fled there during a lightning storm, when someone was murdered at the cabin. So it all helped us to feel the reality.
We were only supposed to film for six weeks and we filmed for twelve. As the film dragged on, people were injured, they left, equipment broke, and it all added up and started to feel real after a while [laughs].
It permeated the movie because back in those days, if Ash hears a sound and swings his shotgun and blows out a window, that’s what you did. You used a real shotgun and you just blew out the window. We just did stuff viscerally back then, but with ASH VS EVIL DEAD, it’s all digital at that point. There’s no real shotgun show, no smoke, that’s digital too, there’s no flash, that’s added later. So I’m glad we made at least one of these movies completely analogue, and just about as real as you’re going to get.

Billie: Go on, what else has he got going for him?
Edie: Only everything
Edie: he’s perfect, I just said
Edie: You know that really tall, ridiculously good-looking boy in Rih’s year
Billie: 🤨 💭 ?
Billie: it’ll come to me
Billie: Aha! The one who [some rave story she’s heard of something wild he did]
Edie: I don’t know how you didn’t just KNOW but yeah
Edie: that sounds like him 🤩
Billie: he’s been working at ⛽️ [the location of said petrol station like whatever road it’s on] nights I’ve gone in
Edie: That’s good to know
Edie: I can go in too now
Edie: 💡
Billie: 👻
Edie: It’s so weird how we met actually
Edie: the thread has 90k people on it, what are the chances, how does that happen
Billie: spooky how many posts you could’ve missed before, weird if he ain’t wrote any til today & then replied to yours 🔮 🛸 🧲
Edie: He’s deffo been on there before, I recognised the username
Edie: but he mentioned somewhere in Dublin so then I knew he was at least from around here
Edie: I’d have never talked to him before, it’s deffo fate
Billie: fated if he agreed the monster was a copout reveal
Edie: He’s not 12, so duh
Edie: He’s so cool
Billie: It’s defs him?
Edie: Come on, like I’m gonna get catfished
Billie: this is wild odds, all I’m saying

Edie: anyway, he’s sent me stuff today so I know it’s really him
Billie: he does look like someone to use for 🎣 but I can picture him on that thread loads
Edie: 🤤🤤🤤
Edie: Do you think he’ll come see me
Billie: yeah, why not
Edie: Aforementioned hotness, he could get ANY girl
Edie: I don’t know who he has gone out with before
Edie: didn’t he go out with one of Rih’s friends for a while?
Billie: [a pause while she has a convo with her friends about this because she has many and they’re mostly lads so at least some of them must know him or have some info]
Billie: Last seen with Lexie but that was time ago & nobody since
Edie: Hmm
Edie: I’m nothing like Lexie
Billie: he ain’t still with her & wasn’t for long, I’d assume he’s looking for different
Edie: and that’s me 🥴
Edie: charming 😏
Billie: 👽
Billie: She hasn’t said anything ☢️⚠️ I’m hearing now, that’s chill
Edie: she’s a bitch anyway, I wouldn’t trust her
Billie: if Blips is accurate on his timeline, even she couldn’t be that much of a bitch
Edie: ?
Billie: Everything with his sister was fresh then, apparently
Edie: Oh
Edie: I remember her, she had a nice smile
Billie: I don’t think I ever met her, it’s gone out my head if I did
Billie: the memorial he made for her is sicker than anything the teachers would’ve though, we hang there constantly
Billie: Take this info with 🧂 yeah? the source is Blips
Edie: She was a lot older
Edie: would’ve been, your paths probably didn’t cross
Edie: makes sense
Edie: he would’ve wanted someone around
Billie: makes sense he’s not thinking straight to pick Lexie to be that someone, but idk man, you can have your fill of pity quick enough
Edie: Maybe someone in her family died? I can see that and making that connection
Edie: not a sibling obviously or we’d know but she’s pretty dramatic, like all Rih’s friends are
Billie: not above milking a dead nan, bet
Edie: 💭 exactly
Edie: Poor Liam, that’s kinda fucking gross
Billie: bad taste in my mouth from being the messenger
Edie: I won’t say it was ages ago because that’d feel a bit like spitting on her grave but you know
Edie: fuck Lizzie or whatever her name is
Edie: she’s probably had 100 lads since then
Billie: Yeah, fuck Lizzie
Billie: what’s next for you & him?
Edie: I don’t know
Edie: I sort of asked him to come ‘round but not just like that
Edie: so his answer was as open-ended, I guess
Edie: I really hope he does though
Billie: he doesn’t know you’re unshockable & didn’t wanna freak you out by coming through the window on a real dark & stormy night
Billie: tracks if Lexie is his point of ref, she’s known for saying what she don’t mean
Edie: ugh, she’s really fucked that up for me
Edie: I should go cockblock her too
Edie: that’s a good idea actually
Billie: You could roll up if he’s working, let him know you’re not alike
Edie: If I roll up on her, he will 😈
Billie: 😶 cos idk how he rolls
Edie: You think he’ll be 😱 / 🤬
Billie: He could think you’re jealous, which would put you looking like her 🤡
Billie: lads always go to that headspace
Edie: most lads
Edie: like your mates who can’t spell their own names without checking with their ma first
Edie: I don’t think he’s like that
Billie: I’ll bite, what’s he like?
Edie: emojis weren’t covering it but I dunno if I even can with actual words either
Edie: he’s like no one else I’ve ever spoken to, I wasn’t bored, and he wasn’t weirded out
Billie: You weren’t even a bit bored?
Edie: nah
Edie: I felt like I was barely keeping up
Billie: 🤯
Edie: but he wasn’t trying to be impressive how lads do, because that isn’t
Billie: he was waiting for whatever he sent to impress you, which worked
Edie: he sent me lots of stuff
Edie: not 🍆 pics
Billie: he looks like he’d be a fuckboy
Edie: right?
Edie: he’s got too much about him though
Edie: I would’ve gone with it if he wanted, he had the chance
Billie: 🤯🤯
Edie: come on
Edie: you can see him
Billie: & I can hear you, you don’t say this kinda shit about anyone
Edie: I know, I’m deadly serious
Edie: 💀💀💀
Billie: What a day
Edie: Don’t tell anyone else yet though
Edie: I think he feels it too
Edie: but just in case
Billie: 🤐
Billie: he blatantly does, but that’s up to yous two to broadcast if you want, how you want
Billie: I’m just excited for the reveal 🎟 🍿 📺 🕹 📷 💻 📼 💿
Edie: He makes films too
Edie: and I’m writing a song right now
Billie: link me
Edie: [do, at least the ones that are clearly not private or whatever]
Edie: 😍
Billie: Cool, I’m gonna check these while you go 😈 on Lexie
Edie: If you hear her scream, no you didn’t
Edie: 😘✌️
Billie: not her 🩸 🦷 🦴 got it
Edie: only partly
Edie: she’s only 3rd on my shit-list, after-all
Billie: if I give you away with a new tic, no I didn’t & they’ll never convict 🤪✌️
Edie: so lucky you can shout ableism if it comes down to it
Edie: ADHD is an excuse for nothing except maybe being five minutes late 🙄
Billie: I’m not going for that with a free pass to shout out at the law 🐷 🐽 🐖 🥓
Edie: you can brag about your free pass, I only get caught when I want to ☠️✊
Billie: not a humble brag you can throw out to your new man, going off these locations I’m recognising, he’s got skills at never getting caught
Billie: How’d he get into [somewhere he should not be]?!
Edie: that’d be telling 🤫
Edie: I told you, he’s really smart
Billie: How didn’t we have a clue about him pretty much?
Edie: because he looks like a fuckboy, I suppose
Edie: you know Rih is gonna act like he’s a decade older than me because she thinks she’s so mature
Billie: 🙄
Edie: I can’t wait to call her out on her bullshit again with something new to add
Edie: can’t wait for the opposition like she’s got a leg left
Billie: She’ll run out fast, he’s cool
Edie: She’s not
Edie: but whatever, she can’t do anything
Billie: No chill, but he’s barely older, so if that’s her only 🔫
Edie: and he went out with Lexie ages ago, well, basically
Edie: she can’t act like she’s really good friends with him, I KNOW she isn’t
Billie: & she wasn’t in Lexie face not to go out with him, couldn’t cos there’s nothing wrong with him 🤷🏼‍♀️
Edie: you act like she’s rational but yeah
Edie: I don’t care, I know this is right
Edie: and what I want
Billie: She’s not, like, irrational enough to be hating on your happiness
Edie: I hate on hers
Billie: that’s different
Edie: not to her
Billie: Yeah but in terms of you & Liam
Edie: If she tries to be nice that’ll be even worse 😷
Billie: minding her own business isn’t gonna happen
Edie: I wish she’d keep hers to herself
Edie: I can’t stand it when he’s here
Edie: I’ll kill Lizzie and steal her bed
Billie: least you can stay at his soon
Edie: 😋
Billie: [frames of one of the videos cos the location is some end of summer event, why not] & you’ll be there together this year
Edie: You really think?
Billie: I don’t think you’ll be dumped quicker than Lexie
Edie: Damn fucking right
Edie: even if he was after one thing, I could do it better than her
Billie: [deletes that message like I don’t wanna read about your sexcapades thank you]
Billie: 🎧 🔊
Edie: [retypes it more vividly which I won’t subject you to lmao]
Billie: NAH
Edie: 😂😂😂
Edie: you’re alright, I’ve got another level to my mission now
Edie: [deets of the scavenger hunt thing]
Billie: Did he sort it for you?
Edie: Yep 😍
Billie: this lad
Billie: unreal
Edie: I think I’m in love
Billie: Someone offer to make him for you in a lab? getting sus otherwise
Edie: That would make sense
Edie: he’s way too perfect
Edie: not that I’m mad
Billie: 🏩 💕 💐 🧸 💞
Edie: 💍💒👶
Billie: [deletes that like calm down lol]
Edie: 👶👶👶👶👶👶👶 maybe
Billie: When’s the [some meteor shower or comet that’d feel very fated and cosmic and therefore we must]? invite him to that first
Edie: 🛸
Edie: I just need to think of a way to tell him where and when
Billie: You’ll be looking up for it, makes sense if he has to 👀⬆️ to find out
Billie: I’d put something on his roof
Edie: About the only place he’d genuinely have to look up to see
Edie: might be less literal
Edie: 💻
Billie: that’ll work too
Edie: plus if you reckon he’ll think I’m mental for hitting up Linda, finding out where he lives without asking will really tip it
Billie: romantic gestures are mental, less of a public ambush than most are
Edie: Everything fun is
Billie: Yeah, but nothing’s fun about getting asked out in the hallway between lessons or whatever 💩 is meant to pass for 😍
Edie: Well yeah, that’s too American teen drama for words
Edie: are his friends gonna be standing there pissing themselves at you believing it even for a sec
Billie: if it’s me his mates are stood about meowing cos some tics refuse to 💀
Edie: That’s cute
Edie: at least you aren’t saying some embarrassing untrue shit
Billie: my true form is 🐱 🐈 & I’m saying the truest shit since 👶🏼 🧒🏼
Edie: I know enough not to throw out suggestions for your head to grab but I’ve seen people saying wild things that you’d get eaten alive for
Edie: but duh, how else did we end up with you
Billie: I know not to watch that shit & maybe 🐦 it but yeah, love to my non-verbals 😝 😜 🤪 ✌️ 🖕 👍
Billie: & to ma for never meeting a stray she didn’t love
Edie: I’ll wait ‘til you wrong me ‘fore I add you to the shit list and send ‘em your way
Edie: tRIGgeRd ❗️❗️❗️❗️
Edie: 💗

I just finished Banjo Kazooie: Jiggies of Time - a full length mod by Mark Kurko
Tumblr media
I don’t normally do reviews because I find it hard to be objective... and this will be no different, so just think of this as me gushing. I’ll go ahead and put the long winded bit under a read more. But the short version is, fans of Banjo Kazooie and Ocarina of Time should play this FOR SURE. Banjo Kazooie fans may actually still love this if they’re not fans of Zelda ( but Zelda knowledge helps sometimes ). Zelda fans may not fare so well if they don’t love the Banjo Kazooie gameplay  ( perhaps they should try the first game as a test if they haven’t played it?  *nudge nudge* )
Tumblr media
I’ve been aware of this project for some time but didn’t really know too much about it. There were a lot of Banjo Kazooie hacks that were just smaller projects that take less than an hour to finish. I was suprised to learn just a few days ago that this project was completed, and was a full length game with the same number of worlds and collectibles as the original Banjo Kazooie. Even better, it ran on a real Nintendo 64! I played mine on the real deal and it ran near perfectly ( there were minor frame dips and a few graphical bugs but nothing too distracting or too frequent )
I’m assuming you already know how Banjo Kazooie plays if you’re reading this, but just in case, Banjo plays a lot like Mario.  You run around in little sandbox areas collecting things, the main collectible being golden jigsaw puzzle pieces called Jiggies, you find these out in the open, by solving puzzles, or by helping NPCs, the secondary collectible being golden music notes, both are needed to progress.  Each level also has five different colored critters called Jinjos that award you with a Jiggy when you find them. Each level has two empty honey comb pieces, collecting six adds another unit of health to your life meter. There are also silver skull shaped tokens used to transform your character into another form in certain levels, and finally, other miscellaneous collectibles to restore health, abilies, and lives.  Pretty basic stuff, you should be familiar if you’ve played any of the Sandbox Mario games, though in Banjo, you unlock your abilities as you progress.
Tumblr media
As I said before the game has 10 worlds. You start in Kokiri forest just like Ocarina of Time. You learn your basic moves in the Lost Woods, though I question the practicality of that, I actually did a full two worlds without my three basic attacks.  I got... lost... I just assumed I was going to learn the attacks elsewhere.  Kokiri forest is actually the first world, with Lost Woods serving as a sort of “Spiral Mountain” area.  Brentilda makes a return here offering three tips about the game each time you encounter her, as well as refilling your health. She appears in every world. Once you get some notes, you can leave to Hyrule Field.
Hyrule Field is the “Gruntilda’s Lair” ( Your Hub world for the uninitiated ) portion of the game, Everything is where you expect it to be, but it’s all sealed off. Instead you need to look for new areas containing jigsaw puzzles to open the locked areas. You will eventually learn a trick to simulate the Sun song as well, but it can only be done here. There’s 10 Jiggies to collect in Hyrule, 7 of which are contained within Lon Lon Ranch, I won’t spoil anything but Lon Lon Ranch has changed pretty drastically. The remaining 3 Jiggies are a bit more elaborately hidden. I’ll get back to those.  When you’re here, Gruntilda will banter with you, just like the original Banjo Kazooie, but sometimes, other characters will talk instead, and there is some genuinely hilarious exchanges between characters here.
Castle Town is the second world, and this is where you get the idea that “oh this isn’t just Banjo in Ocarina of time” because you start to uncover a lot of areas that were not in the original game. It only makes sense that a character with completely different skills can reach places Link never could.  Mumbo Jumbo returns in this world, all of his transformations are the same as the original game, but they’ve been reskinned to fit a Zelda theme... well... mostly.
Once you wrap up in there, you head to Kakariko village, the third world. And it’s pretty standard. You actually learn the final move in this world. This game utilizes all of the original game’s moves except for the wading boots... they were kind of lame anyway I suppose.  This is also where you start to notice that this game is absolutely loaded to the gills with easter eggs. game cases and consoles are littered everywhere, Nintendo characters playing games are hidden away ( except for one ), and you may also notice some Golden eye characters spying on you ( they actually creep me out when I first catch a glimpse of them. They look ghoulish to me... )
Explore Kakariko enough and you should find the way to open Death Mountain, which is the fourth world.  Now this part of the game drove me slightly crazy. Death mountain has lava. Lava is an instant death for Banjo. When you die, you lose all of the notes you collected, and all of your Jinjos too if you haven’t got them all yet.  Here’s the thing, it’s another world where you have to turn into a small creature to get some of the notes, but before you do, you have to open the path for the creature as Banjo. And you have a LOT of ground to cover ( it includes Dodongo’s Cavern, the  mountain trail, Goron City, and a few extra areas not in Ocarina of Time ), so it’s almost like you have to do everything in this level twice... I died several times, at one point all I needed was five more notes, I was about to blow a gasket. After you finish up there, it’s time to head to Zora’s Domain. The world actually starts at Zora’s River, I enjoyed the world a lot but it was also pretty taxing. It demands a LOT of resources I had previously been taking for granted. Namely the eggs you shoot.  I was expecting Jabu Jabu to be replaced with Clanker the whale from the original Banjo Kazooie, but no, it’s just Jabu Jabu.. which is probably fine, this is Hyrule after all.  Jabu Jabu is not actually a dungeon though, which is a little disappointing, but there is some very interesting stuff in there... and this is where I start having a little bit of an issue with the easter eggs, subtlty goes out the window here and we actually start leaving the Zelda theme behind for two pretty big areas in this world.  It doesn’t bother me too much but I really wish this sort of thing was kept for secret levels instead of the main game... there’s a lot of tough platforming around Jabu Jabu’s area.
By now you should have stumbled across the means of opening the way to the Forest Temple. And this is one of the coolest parts of the game but also one of the most long winded and complicated parts.  The game expects you to go back to the old days of taking notes on paper.  You explore the temple looking for letters of the Hylian Alphabet and their English equivalent, you’re expected to to write these down as a chart and then use them to decipher some messages written in Hylian Text through out the temple... the thing is, a lot of the things the text asked me to do, I figured out on my own. There are also paintings on the wall meant to give clues, but I got mixed messages from one of these paintings that was meant to be used in tandem with the hylian writing. So I was trying the wrong thing over and over...  But I will say this level is truly the most jam packed with Zelda easter eggs and It’s hard not to spoil any of it, because I lost my mind at some of it...
At this point I should throw in that this game doesn’t have any new enemies or bosses. Most of the enemies are reskinned to be Zelda themed. It’s pretty effective in selling the illusion... except in the case where it’s not.
Next destination is Lake Hylia. I’ve got to stop to talk about the music real quick because Lake Hylia has my favorite track in the game.  This game has an amazing soundtrack.  It’s mostly Zelda songs remixed in a way that makes it sound like a song you would expect to hear in Banjo Kazooie ( and some hints of Banjo Kazooie/Tooie tunes get mixed in as a medley as well ), very bouncy and fun.  Not all of it is Ocarina of Time music. Lake Hylia actually uses an upbeat version of the Twilight Princess lake hylia theme.   In any case, this level sees you explore the lake, the fishing hole, the water temple, and a new series of floating islands above the lake.  As far as the Water Temple goes, it’s not too bad.
Next is the Gerudo Valley area, which includes the valley, the gerudo fortress, and the desert temple. Disappointingly, you cannot explore the insides of the gerudo fortress.  You can enter them, but you just exit out a different door in the fortress, like some kind of warp maze.  This area was also a real drain on my gold feather and blue egg resources, I almost had to leave to stock up on gold feathers, but I was sly and found a work around my problem and was able to progress. It was probably the least impressive area in the game if I’m being honest... also, Brentilda says that the hylian letters I wrote down were going to be useful here, but I couldn’t find anywhere  in the dungeon that had Hylian letters... hmm.
With this, you head to the final world.  The means which you use to enter this world are very cool. I won’t spoil it but it should be obvious to anyone who’s played already, assuming they haven’t completely forgotten one of the most important locations in the original Ocarina of Time...  Now, the world itself?  It’s cool thematically, but the usage of another small creature transformation really drags the world down.  Not to mention another easter egg really kills the mood of this final world, but it’s easily forgiven.
The final world is also what houses the entrance to the final battle.  But this game actually requires you to get ALL the Jiggies save for three in order to enter the final battle, so if you missed any jiggies at all during the normal levels, time to turn back and get them... unless you’re only short three, and wouldn’t you know it, there are three “secret levels” in this game with extra hidden Jiggies.
So, you would have no doubt seen this by now if you were playing the game but in Castle Town, there’s a museum you can reach by transforming into a small creature and crawling through the keyhole, and this museum houses clues to the location of these secret levels, as well as the secret jiggies within those levels. They’re pretty well hidden.  The clues get revealed more and more as you collect notes. First, just a general description of the area, then a more exact description of the area, but written in hylian, then a photograph of the area you need to inspect to find the entrance, and lastly, a picture of the hidden jiggy in the secret level ( though if you wait this long, the nature of the secret level will be spoiled, and these levels are BIG easter eggs. ), so maybe don’t wait too long to find them.
The final Battle with Gruntilda is the same as it was in the original Banjo Kazooie, but the arena is just slightly altered to make it a little more difficult, but not unfairly so.  Not much more to say beyond that.  The game has a pretty cool credits sequence and ending that Zelda fans are sure to appreciate.
I do kind of wish there was a Quiz show like the original Banjo Kazooie, I was expecting to get my Zelda knowledge tested, but no such luck.
Playing this game was such a blast and it made me feel like I was experiencing Banjo Kazooie and Ocarina of Time for the first time again at the same time, which is a very strange but welcome feeling. I never would have expected these two games fused into one to work so well, but it really is remarkable how well it works, and it tickles my nerd fanboy bone for Zelda in many ways, as well as Banjo, Rareware and Nintendo in general too.  I can’t recommend it enough for fans of both games...  I can only recommend this to non Banjo Zelda fans if they’re willing to play the original Banjo first to see if they like it.  But non Zelda fans of Banjo, I think you’ll just enjoy having a new Banjo Kazooie Adventure to tackle, though the lack of Zelda knowledge might make the road a little bumpy in a few areas.
I love these games to death but i’ve replayed them so much that they don’t entertain as much as they used to. This was a great way to freshen up the experience for both. I’m dying to play more like this. There’s a very interesting “Link in Mario 64″ mod i’m keeping my eye on. But that may take a lot of time, as it’s only released the first demo... for now... I actually kinda want to replay the original BK and OOT agian. Heh.

Sunshower 8
A shower. A simple shower and a brief walk to the pond was all Ilia had left before the most awkward conversation in her life. No amount of White Fang training could prepare her for this. Expressing feelings weren’t something covered when training to be a spy. Maybe Neptune was right on the money about taking time to sort out her head before confronting the problem. A piece of her soul felt like it left Ilia’s body at the realization just how crazy that was to her. Neptune was right and she should’ve listened. He must never know. ‘Oh well. What’s done is done. Might as well appreciate the time I have before self destruction.’ She thought walking back to her house painfully slow.
Slow or not, eventually she found herself in the middle of the forest in front of an arrow sign pointed done with her initials on it. The ground underneath her feet was clear of any obstacles; just a perfect grass circle. Around her were tall, strong trees that shot straight in the sky with branches as thick as logs. One tree in particular had a branch that bent down lower than the rest and had small holes carved into the trunk. Ilia rested her hand on the sign and turned the arrow straight up. ‘Home sweet home at last. Well...mostly.’
Usually Ilia wouldn’t miss the chance to train her acrobatic skills but there was way too much on her mind to trust herself to not slip up. Instead off running up any trees or flipping from branch to branch, Ilia took the easy path and started climb up the tree with carved footholds in it. If Adam was ever good for anything it was his constant nagging about how houses in Menagerie should have at least two easy ways to get to. Multiple types of a faunus species might have to drop by for whatever reason and it would a real pain for a place to only be accessible by having a specific trait. Even a broken clock was right twice a day she supposed m.
Ilia reached a layed of dense foliage that was woven together with straw and covered the entire circle below; essentially blocking most of the sunlight from coming through. ‘Where is that stupid...ah ha!’ relieved to find the soft spot in layer, Ilia pushed her way through with easy and stood on the flooring. Infront of her was a giant hut. The roof was also made of a thick straw that allowed rain to run off it as it extended past the actual frame of the wooden house. Two windows were placed on each side of the door. Decorating the outside was always an idea she entertained but never did. The inside and the utilities was the more important part anyways.
The girl smiled when the gentle breeze from opening the door hit her face. To the left was a futon up against the wall with a silk blanket on the armrest and a rug on the ground in front of it. A small coffee table was a bit further away that held a tiger lily as the center piece. Up against the wall the door was on had a dusty entertainment center with a tv smack dab in the middle. Old movies were placed below it leaning against each other. The right side of the room had the floor made of harden clay since it was the kitchen. The only thing really in it was a wooden circular table in the middle, a fridge in the back that faced the direction of the living room, and from that ran a counter top that curved all the way back towards the door. It caved way into a sink a few feet from the fridge before being a counter again. Then was interrupted again by a basic stove with two burners up top that were about two feet out of reach from Ilia. Drawers held everything she needed underneath the countertop.
She’d be lying if she said wasn’t hungry but considering there’s someone waiting on her, bathing and thinking took priority. Ilia kicked off her shoes and moseyed straight down into the hallway and opened the bathroom door. Easily the smallest room she created for the soul purpose of allowing other rooms to be bigger. She was at the sink the moment she walked in. Passed it was the toilet and another few inches away was the tub that ran sideways. A sliding warped glass door was attached to it. The ceiling had an opening above it to vent out the steam she always made. Ilia found herself leaning against towards the full mirror on top the sink. Her hands curling against it and staring at her reflection in slight concern.
‘Geez I look this rough even after sleeping?’ The woman thought looking at how mess her hair was. Underneath her eyes were a bit dark but that’s the price of partying hard; even if she didn’t enjoy it. Well...most of it. She started looking at her hair tie before settling it down.
‘Last night really happened. It wasn’t a dream. I wonder how much Sun exactly remembers? How much do I remember?’ Soon her clothes fell to the floor as she continued to look in the mirror. The color of her skin slightly turning pink the more she recalled last night.
‘He...might remember seeing me, all of me. Is that good or bad? I remember all of him.’ That memory only helped to make her get pinker. “All of him...”
Her hands retreated from the sink and went to her hips. Bit by bit the entire picture was forming. Last night was getting vivid. She remembered the way he was looking at her; the way he held her. Ilia remember the way his fingers wrapped and pressed into her hips. The feeling was...new? No, that’s not quite the word. Foreign, it was foreign to her. Not to say that is was bad, just expected. Like everything else was last night was. The words they exchanged, the feelings behind them that accompanied tears and the embrace that came afterwards. Ilia wasn’t expecting any of that. It was nice. Sun was ni- “Agh! What does that mean!?!?” She shouted out loud before walking to the tub flustered and turning on the water. “A cool bath. A cool bath will calm me down. Everything will make sense when I calm down.” Water rushed out the faucet and filled the tub that gave another reflection to struggle with. This time she had noticed something she had overlooked the first time. A few spots on her chest weren’t spots at all. They were little bruises lightly peppered everywhere. She had forgotten her hips weren’t the only thing that got a fair amount of attention last night. She’d be flattered right now if she didn’t feel like she was about to die from her own memories. “Sigh, why is this the one time I remember everything!?”
xxxx
Sun:*texting* “Neptune! Aww you asleep yet!?”
Neptune: “We just saw each other...”
Sun: “I know, just have a question. What would you do in my situation? Follow up, what would happen if-”
Bzzz! Bzzz!
His phone lit up with a Neptune’s name in a face time. Sun immediately answered and saw his best friend with messy hair and laying in the hammock.
Neptune:.....
Sun:....Am I bugging you?
Neptune:No, just can’t believe this is happening. I’m usually the antsy one. Is this how you feel usually; calm and fine? I didn’t realize you had the best seat ever.
Sun:How do you deal with drama all the time!?
Neptune:Because I have you dude.
Sun:That was sweet and all but.....
Neptune:You are Sun Wukong. If you can handle being friends with Ilia after she stabbed you then you can handle a little awkward post sex conversation. I got your back but I don’t think you’ll need it.
Sun:Wow, thanks Neptune.
Neptune:No problem. Consider it me paying it forward. You were there with my major girl problem.
Sun:*eyes widened* Woah I didn’t think you would ever mention-
Neptune:Her name is still banned!
Sun:Should’ve guessed. Still proud of you.
Neptune:Yeah yeah, save that pride and turn it into confidence. It’s not like you’re on a time limit to think. Just don’t run into her and do something crazy.
Sun:About that....
Neptune:What did you....?
The embarrassed boy was about to answer before he looked across the lake to see the girl in question finally showing up. Her hair was still down and she wasn’t in her usual clothes. Ilia wore a plain white T-shirt and what looked to be gray track pants. Complete with black running shoes. Sun couldn’t tell if it was for comfort or a sign that this will end with her fleeing the scene. He was sitting on a pier that led to some pretty deep water after all.
Sun:I’ll call you later Neptune. Maybe.
Neptune:What does that mean!? Su- *disconnected*
Sun:*mumbles* Definitely going to be hearing about that later.
“Hearing about what later?” The voice said, catching him off gaurd. His tail perked up along with his swiveling head. He was surprised to see Ilia was standing a few inches behind him already. Was she faster than he realized or was he spacing out that much? Now wasn’t the time to think of it.
Sun:H..hey
Ilia:Hey *rubbing her arm*
........
Sun:Wanna have seat? If you know, you want to? Which ever is fine by me. Sitting or standin, hehehe not much of difference and stuff. *clears throat*
Ilia:*raises eye brow* Freaking out?
Sun:Oh you know. A little bit.
Ilia:Good. Means I’m not the only one. Today is....
Sun:Yeah, definitely. A real cluster of a lot of things.
Ilia:Exactly.
A few more minutes went by before Ilia finally chose between sitting or standing. Her feet inched up to the edge of the pier next to him. She thought about her choice one more time in her head before sitting down next to him; her legs dangling over the edge. The soles of her shoes grazed across the water’s sureface. Distorting the perfect image of the blue sky above. Ilia couldn’t bring herself to look at him directly but his reflection was manageable at least. What she saw was to be expected but surprising all at once. Sun wasn’t looking at her either. His tail was wrapped around his left wrist as he rubbed the tip.
Ilia:(I guess even the most social of people have their moments. Damn, really wanted to be the passive one here but looks like I’m going on offense.) Did, did I keep you waiting?
Sun:*turns around* Huh?
Ilia:Were you waiting here long? I kinda took my time bathing.
Sun:Oh, no it was fine. Too many things to think about to notice the time.
Ilia:Makes sense. There’s definitely a lot of things to think about. So.... wanna try thinking about them together? Two heads are better than one.
Sun:Sounds like a plan. Should we be facing each other then or-
Ilia:*red* back to back would be nice!
Sun:Oh......
Ilia: “Oh?” That not work for you?
Sun:It’s fine.
Ilia:Obviously it isn’t with you.
Sun:Yeah but face to face makes you uncomfortable apparently so I’ll deal.
Ilia:...... Well now I don’t want to do back to back at all.
Sun:*chuckles* Oh my god...
Ilia:What?
Sun:Does this really matter? I was just trying to make you feel comfortable.
Ilia:Well I’m trying to consider your feelings dummy. Someone has to validate them unlike you.
Sun:What’s that supposed to mean?
Ilia:You just tried pushing the way you feel to the wayside like you did last night!
Sun:What else was I supposed to do!? You were having a horrible time. Are you trying to tell me you would’ve listened if I wobbled up to you drunk and depressed.
Ilia:OF COURSE! We’re friends! I care about your feelings! *stares at him*
Sun:....
The two of them locked eyes quietly. Sun’s face inspects the rigid expression on Ilia’s face. He’s seen the girl be serious. He’s been on the serious end of her weapon after all. This was different though. Familiar.
Sun:I think Neptune is growing on you.
Ilia:What?
Sun:He’s always getting on me when it comes to things like this. Guess you really do care? *smiles*
Ilia:.....*looks away*
Sun:Ilia?
Ilia:Shut up. *turns red* we’ll just look at each other through the lake. Sound fair?
He stares down at the water and notices the girl every so often stealing glances at him before looking away again.
Sun:This works.
Ilia:Why was back to back even a problem for you?
Sun:Why is your hair down still?
Ilia:Where...where the hell did that come from?
Sun:Oh I thought we were asking obvious questions. Discussing important problems gets harder when you can’t see a person’s expressions. If you can’t see them then words feel less honest.
Ilia:Don’t trust my words?
Sun:I don’t trust mine. I...have a knack for saying things that don’t particularly go perfect with what I’m trying to get across. Earned a few slaps because of it.
Ilia:Ouch. Who’s bold enough to do that?
Sun:Not many but it happened enough times to know I should tread more lightly with sensitive topics.
Ilia:Fair enough. Well if it means anything, you’ve been doing pretty well so far. Not just today but with last night at the party too. Thanks.
Sun:I wouldn’t exactly thank me for last night. Are we finally gonna talk about how it ended?
Ilia:I’m still on why you think you my hair is still down.
Sun:Ilia...
Ilia:Fine, fine, where do we even start?
Sun:Do you regret it?
Ilia:Right into the deep end I see. Good as any place I suppose. It’s the only real question I had time to mull over. When I woke up I was extremely shocked about the entire thing. I didn’t remember much at first and I’m going to be honest with you. Everything felt really shitty.
Those words cut deeper than Sun expected. His hands joined together tightly. A slow exhale left his body as he nods and stares into the water. ‘Can’t blame her.’ Sun thought to himself before the touch of Ilia’s hand landed on his shoulder. The boy glanced at her reflection to see it was as calm as the water it was on,
Ilia:However, I’ve had the opportunity to take a nap and a bath since then. Last night was definitely confusing, weird, and probably the most vulnerable I’ve felt since fighting Blake. It was also the first time since then that I felt genuinely comforted; you did that Sun.
Sun:So, we’re okay then?
Ilia:Yeah. No regrets on this side of the pier. Just a really, really unexpected story to tell one day.
Sun:Phew! Thank the Gods! *falls back*
Ilia:I’ll take that as you have no regrets either?
Sun:Most of my worries came from thinking I hurt you in someway. I can deal with feeling a bit of weird or uncomfortable as long as you don’t hate me. No way I could live with this otherwise.
Ilia:You really put others before yourself don’t you?
Sun:I wouldn’t say that. If I can make someone’s life better then I try. Accidentally making more problems messes with me.
Ilia:(I can relate.)
Sun:Next question. Are we...gonna talk about this after this conversation?
Ilia:Not sure I follow.
Sun:We ever gonna bring this up in casual conversation or Is this our secret?
Ilia:Do you wanna tell people?
Sun:Not really, no. I don’t want to pretend like this never happened either.
Ilia:Pfft you make it sound like I was your-.......
Sun:Hmm? You ok? *sits up*
Ilia:*covers face*......
Sun:......
Sun:You remembered I told you that last night was my first time?
Ilia:*nods* I can understand if you wanna push me into the lake right now.
Sun:Eh. It’s no-
Ilia:Don’t say it’s no big deal. That’s a huge deal! You only get one of those.
Sun:Wasn’t it your first time too last night?
Ilia:With a guy! I’ve been with women bef- how have I been with more women than you!? That’s insane!
Sun:*shrugs* We ran in different circles I guess. I probably shouldn’t be telling you this but you’re way more of chick magnet than Neptune.
Ilia:The girls here seem to be swarming around him like flies.
Sun:True. Doesn’t mean he’s slept with any of them. Neptune just gets a lot of dates.
Ilia:You’re lying....
Sun:Ask himself yourself at the party tonight.
Ilia:Wait, you’re partying again tonight?
Sun:Might as well. I was gonna skip it but didn’t really hangout with Blake last night for obvious reasons. I was hoping you’d back me up.
Ilia:Me?
Sun:Yeah you. Think of it as sort of a do over. I don’t mind the way yesterday ended but everything leading up to it was....a social disaster. *rubs head* Yang and I are on shaky ground. Eventually it’ll get back to Blake unless I can find a way to bury the hatchet. Who knows? Maybe things will blow over like this?
Ilia:Doesn’t Yang have a reputation for being aggressive?
Sun:All the more reason for you to have my back! Besides, don’t you wanna try putting your best foot forward in all this?
Ilia:Not really.
Sun:Wow...
Ilia:Did you forget I’m the one who had the mentality to brush off Belladonna problems and feelings for awhile? I think I’ll just stay home this time.
Sun:I can’t change your mind? You really want to stay home?
He was asking a lot of good questions. Anymore and Ilia might have to tell Judy that her detective promotion might get stolen. Staying home wasn’t the most exciting thing ever but faking fun was no better. Home had a bed though and no drama.
Ilia:Sorry, maybe tomorrow. I doubt this will be the only party. Let me know how it goes though okay? If they ask about me then just tell them I party too hard yesterday. Too much excitement.
Sun:Ummm out of curiosity, is that last part a lie or the truth? *blushing*
Ilia:Ummmm that’s uh. That’s definitely a question isn’t it?
Sun:*winces* F..forget I asked.
Ilia:Listen-
Sun:I get it. Definitely weird to ask. I was curious but we can leave that one alone.
Ilia:There’s just a bunch of layers to that. That entire moment is pretty jumbled. Peak performance was something neither of us were at. Not to say that you were underperforming! No you were...I thought.....sex was.... I don’t want to ask for an out, but could you kindly give me one? I’m digging myself a hole.
Sun:Hmmm. Don’t you have to go back home and rest up? I’m pretty sure you told me you needed strength for partying tonight. *smirking*
Ilia:That’s cheating! I don’t want that shovel!
Sun:I’m not saying you have to go to Blake’s house. Enjoy other things. Hangout with Neptune. He thinks you’re cool. After I’m done with my business then the three of us can hang. No drama, no weird conversations, just the three of enjoying the festivities.
Ilia:Persuasive, aren’t you?
Sun:So are you when you’re drunk and I can’t believe that just came out my mouth; was that too soon?
Ilia:Considering it’s been like ten minutes? Yeah it is, but I walked into that one. *crosses arms* I will party for three hours at most and this time there’s no drinks. Deal?
Sun:I can work with that. See you tonight then?
Ilia:I’ll be on the beach the moment three hours are up I’m gone, so you better make nice with Yang fast.
Sun:Please, making friends is practically my secret semblance.
Sun hit his chest before smiling proudly. Ilia couldn’t help but cringe a little at the remark but at the same time wondered if that was possible. The charisma around him did seem to be a bit infectious. Blake and Neptune adoring the boy was proof enough that he can find interests with people on opposite ends of the social spectrum. Ghira was the only one who seemed impervious to it but what dad isn’t wary of charming boys talking to their daughter? Especially in Blake’s case.
As much as she stressed over the talk, it was over in a fraction of the time she expected. Yeah there was a lot of things that could’ve been discussed further but not as important as what they went over. There’s time for that later. Right now she running on fumes and Sun had already got up and started to walk away. Yet there was one thing that gnawed at her thoughts a little as she sat alone. A thing that flustered her because of his idiotic question. Ilia was his first and he was fine with that happening, but was she herself actually good!? He hadn’t once commented on her performance. Ilia wasn’t sure if she actually wanted the answer. All she knew was she was tired of turning pink.

Danganronpa V3 Commentary: Bonus 4.1 - Ultimate Talent Development Plan (Mostly Kaito Edition)
This is postgame content, so people shouldn’t be reading this without having already finished the main game anyway. But just to be safe: while this is non-canon character stuff, I will sometimes be mentioning events that happened in the main story, so there will be spoilers for the main game.
First off, some of the usual preamble about how this mode even works. Functionally, it’s, of all things, a board game that serves as a companion for another bonus mode which is a dungeon crawler RPG. Characters don’t gain experience from battles in the RPG; instead, you level up characters in this mode, by playing through the board game as them. I could go on at great length about all the mechanics of this, because I got rather addicted to it at one point. (Apparently all you need to do to make me invested in the mechanics of an RPG is to put characters I already love into it, and then I will do everything in my power to figure out how to turn them into the awesomest fighters they can be. Kaito is the best tank and will take all of the hits to protect his glass-cannon sidekicks!) But we’re here for the story aspect, so I shall restrain myself.
Flavour-wise, each playthrough of the board game follows your chosen character as they live out three years at Hope’s Peak, in a non-despair AU in which the casts from DR1, DR2 and DRV3 are all in the same school year. (Well, it’s mostly non-despair – at the end of the three years, an army of Monokuma robots is unleashed under the school, and that’s the dungeon crawling part. But your heroes ultimately deal with that threat before it can cause any chaos outside.)
The board game is only a very abstract representation of this story. Each turn supposedly represents one month, but really most of the spaces on the board are just various ways to level up your various attributes and don’t have any real narrative. The only spaces that matter for our purposes here are Friendly Spaces, which will show you one of five scenes featuring your character, that I’ll refer to as “friendly events”, in which they interact with one or two other students. If you land on enough Friendly Spaces, which is easy enough to do if you’re aiming for it, you’ll see all five scenes with your character.
The other source of story here is seasonal events, which trigger automatically on a specific month in each of the three years. The character you’re playing as gets a choice of three possible things they can do for the event, each of which results in a scene with one or two other characters. Unfortunately, these choices are mutually exclusive, so to see all of a character’s scenes, you need to play as them through almost the entirety of the board game (because the last seasonal event is near the end of year 3) three times.
…But actually, that’s not all, not if you want to really see all the scenes for a single character. Friendly Space scenes are easy to see all of because they’ll appear when you’re playing as any of the characters featured in them. (Well, usually; one of Kaito’s doesn’t appear for him, but that seems to be just a programming oversight.) But the seasonal event scenes don’t work this way and only appear for the character who is given the choice of what to do. So any given character is also going to appear in a bunch of other characters’ seasonal events, and you’re only going to see those scenes by playing as those other characters. Worse, if you’re interested in a specific character’s scenes, there’s no way to even know which other characters’ seasonal events they appear in. So the only way to be sure that you’ve seen every single scene for a given character is to play through the board game three times each as *every single one of over fifty characters*. (Actually, the exact number is fifty-three, which… I think is genuinely just a coincidence. Heh.)
In short, thank god for the wiki. I do not envy but am immensely grateful to the people who went and did exactly that and got transcripts – with sprites, even – of every single one of these scenes. Thankfully, each character’s page for this mode on the wiki contains all of their own seasonal events and all of their appearances in other characters’ seasonal events, so you can see absolutely all of their scenes in one place. I am not using my Vita for this one. (I wouldn’t have wanted to anyway because the backlog function doesn’t work in this mode, but.)
While it makes things way more inconvenient in terms of actually seeing every scene, I do prefer the board game as a framing device for this AU’s story far more than the framing device for the Salmon Team AU. Salmon Team used the same interface of Shuichi walking around and talking to people that the main story had, which resulted in an impression that, in-story, everyone was just robotically standing in the same spot every day doing nothing until Shuichi came to talk to them. But this board game is abstract enough that we know none of the rolling dice and landing on spaces is really what’s happening in-story. The scenes we see give us a glimpse of the students’ school lives, but there’s clearly so much more happening offscreen that we don’t get to see. It feels like an organic and fully-realised story that the board game just happens to only give us a series of brief windows into.
Before beginning into the board game itself and seeing any of the actual scenes, you also get a single textbox from the character you’ve chosen to play as, as they get ready to enrol in Hope’s Peak.
Kaito:  “Alright! I’ll keep training while I’m here and after I graduate, I’ll go straight to space!”
Kaito’s words here raise a few questions, honestly. If he’s already started astronaut training, he should be focusing entirely on that and really should not also be attending high school. He questioned in the demo why he’d have bothered enrolling in some academy when he should just be working on getting to space as soon as possible; you’d think he’d feel the same even if it was Hope’s Peak! It seems like the writing is just desperately trying to have it be the case that Kaito is both already an astronaut trainee in order to justify his Ultimate status, and yet is also attending Hope’s Peak, even though dividing his focus like that really doesn’t seem like the right way for Hope’s Peak to nurture his talent.
However, we could get this to work by imagining that Kaito is exaggerating here about having already started his training. Perhaps what’s really going on is this: Kaito managed to impress the space program despite being way too young, so they made him a deal. They recommended him to Hope’s Peak as the Ultimate Astronaut, having acknowledged his incredible potential to be one, and if he graduates from there, then he gets to jump straight into astronaut training without also needing a college degree. After all, part of Hope’s Peak’s deal is supposed to be that you’re “set for life” if you graduate, which I can imagine would equate to getting privileges like that.
I wonder if these privileges also mean that Maki doesn’t have to be an assassin any more after she graduates. This is the one universe in which Maki has actually killed people and her assassin cult actually exists and she’s going to have to go back to killing people again once this is over, which makes me very sad. Unfortunately I really doubt the canon Hope’s Peak would have given a fuck about helping Maki out like that, and all of the scenes we see here remain very vague about what’s going to happen to Maki once she leaves. Buuuut maybe we can pretend that this AU version of Hope’s Peak is nicer and is going to abolish her assassin cult as its way of making her “set for life”? I just don’t want to imagine Maki having to go back to killing once she leaves here. I can’t imagine Kaito or Shuichi would stand for it either.
Meanwhile, in Shuichi’s little intro line, he isn’t wearing his hat, when he really should be if you think about it. Until he meets Kaito and Kaede and starts trying to be braver, he’s not going to take that thing off.
…So, if this introduction didn’t already make it obvious, I’m going to be focusing on scenes featuring at least one of our adorable training trio, with a particular focus on Kaito because what did you expect, it’s me.
Shuichi (featuring Kyoko)
Obviously one of the friendly events I’m here to talk about is one between Shuichi and Kaito!
Shuichi is already Kaito’s sidekick in this event, which is something we don’t really need to be shown coming about, not when we can easily fill in the gaps and imagine that it went roughly like it did in canon. Kaito saw Shuichi’s weakness and made it his business to help, just like Kaito always does.
…It is a little different from canon, because there isn’t the context of Shuichi needing to have his act together in case there’s another class trial, nor is there the subtle Kaito’s-issues context of him feeling like Shuichi has already been more of a hero than him and wanting to make himself a part of that in order to feel useful and not inferior. But this just goes to show that those reasons were never necessary and Kaito would have reached out to Shuichi regardless, because that’s genuinely just who he is.
Kaito:  “Why’re you looking so down now? I thought you’d been looking better than when you first got to this academy. If there’s something going on, then spit it out! It’s a hero’s job to help out his sidekick!”
Shuichi:  “It’s nothing, I just… I feel as though I haven’t used my detective skills lately.”
Kaito noticing Shuichi looking down and encouraging him to talk about whatever’s wrong is still so good. It seems Shuichi would normally have felt this wasn’t important enough to mention, but thanks to Kaito’s prodding, he’s been starting to learn that it’s okay to talk about even small-seeming problems, because Kaito will help him with anything.
(And Kaito is indeed actually right in his judgement that something was wrong, because this isn’t chapter 4 in which he’d become desperate enough to forcefully insist Shuichi needed his help when he really didn’t. No I am not going to stop mentioning the time Kaito did that in his chapter 4 FTE; it was delightful.)
Shuichi:  “I feel like… I should be doing something. I got my Ultimate talent by chance, so…”
Props to Shuichi for wanting to do something about this. Even though he feels he got his Ultimate title by chance, he’s not just going to wallow in the feeling that he doesn’t deserve it – he wants to work until he can feel like he does deserve it and can be proud of it! It’s definitely Kaito (and probably also Kaede; she’s his friend in this AU too, of course) who helped Shuichi feel this way, because this was very much not his outlook at the beginning.
Shuichi:  “But… a detective can’t work unless there’s a case to solve, or a request to fulfil.”
Kaito:  “No! Your talents are more than just that!”
Shuichi:  “Huh?”
Kaito:  “Hey, Shuichi… I’m an astronaut. Do you think I’m useless when I’m not in space?”
Shuichi:  “You’re not useless! You have good teamwork, and you always help people in need. Everyone really depends on you, Kaito.”
I really like Kaito’s approach to this. Of course he’s not useless when he’s not in space, because all of the skills he has that gave him his astronaut talent can also be applied in so many other ways! In terms of current achievements, Kaito is a far worse astronaut than Shuichi is a detective, because Shuichi has at least solved a good few cases, while Kaito’s never even been to space. But Kaito doesn’t let that get him down! There’s so much else he can do with his skills before he gets there!
Kaito:  “Then what about detectives? Are they useless without cases or requests?”
Shuichi:  “Well…”
So the same should go for Shuichi, right? Obviously!
Kaito:  “So I’ll be the hero and you be my sidekick!”
Shuichi:  “…Isn’t that what we’ve been doing?”
It’s… a little hard to translate the Kaito-ese here, and I don’t blame Shuichi for getting confused. But I think what he’s trying to get at is that he’ll cheer Shuichi on while Shuichi goes out there and lives up to his potential, because that’s what the hero-and-sidekick thing is really about.
Kaito:  “And when someone’s in trouble, you help ‘em out! Like, by giving them advice or something! It might be different from your usual detective work, but… Instead of rotting away like that, it’ll make you feel alive by helping out those around us.”
It’s adorable that Kaito’s basically encouraging Shuichi to be more like him, in the sense of trying to help people. After all, he knows that Shuichi’s a naturally compassionate person who does instinctively want to help others a lot. Their respective talents lend themselves to helping others in quite different ways – Shuichi isn’t necessarily going to be as great at giving advice as Kaito is – but that just means that there’s things that Shuichi can do for people that even Kaito can’t.
There actually is something of a running theme of Shuichi doing this kind of thing in some of his other scenes in this AU! The types of cases he took on at his uncle’s office were often about finding lost pets or missing people, so he’s really good at tracking things down, which can come in very handy when others have more practical problems than the kind Kaito helps people with. Just like in canon, Kaito is good at helping people with his words, while Shuichi is good at helping people with his actions.
This also comes up a little in another one of Shuichi’s friendly events, with Kyoko. Because, yes, she’s here too, meaning there’s just awkwardly two different Ultimate Detectives in the same school year somehow.
Shuichi:  “An apprentice like me doesn’t deserve to share the title of Ultimate Detective with you…”
Which, predictably, makes Shuichi feel rather inferior when comparing himself to Kyoko and her accomplishments.
Kyoko:  “Others accept that you are a detective, and have also come to rely on you, too. The other day, I saw you running all over the place with Ryoma and Peko… No doubt because they needed your insights as a detective, right?”
Shuichi:  “Ah, I was just looking for a missing cat around the academy… I’ve handled plenty of missing pet cases before, so I was able to help, but…”
This is indeed a thing that happened – there’s a scene between Ryoma and Peko (the former of whom is a big cat person and the latter of whom loves fluffy animals in general) in which they discuss a lost cat they’ve seen around school and ultimately decide to get Shuichi’s help to track it down and find its owner. That scene doesn’t actually get as far as featuring Shuichi in it, but this scene here with Kyoko confirms that he did indeed manage to help solve that “case”! It’s neat how there’s various events that are referred to in multiple scenes, to help things really feel like a cohesive story.
Kyoko:  “Do you think it’s meaningless for people to rely on you?”
Shuichi:  “…No, that’s wrong. It makes me… so happy to be helpful.”
Kyoko:  “Then I see no reason for you to compare yourself to me. Every detective is shaped by their motives, methodologies, and case histories.”
Kyoko has such a good point! She and Shuichi are very, very different types of detective and shouldn’t really be compared to each other. Kyoko is a homicide detective and takes a very objective, impersonal approach to things, whereas Shuichi handles more domestic cases that are about solving people’s problems and generally has more of a focus on helping people in the process. It’s possible that Kyoko brings up people relying on Shuichi because she actually kind of looks up to him for that, since that’s very much not something that her own type of detective work makes her suited for.
This idea gets explored a little more in another scene Shuichi has with Kyoko, as one of his seasonal events for the final year. (I’ll mostly be trying to do the seasonal events in chronological order as we go along, but there’s some final-year events, such as this one, that exist as kind of a follow-up to an earlier friendly event between two characters. So I’ll be doing those in conjunction with the relevant friendly event, even if it means we have to temporarily skip ahead to the end of the three years now and then.)
Shuichi bumps into Kyoko about to leave for some urgent business in such a hurry that she won’t even have time to tell her classmates she’s going to miss the closing ceremony, so Shuichi offers to let Makoto know for her.
Kyoko:  “If that’s the case… I’m sorry, but would you mind doing it?”
Shuichi:  “Ah, don’t worry about it! It’s alright to depend on others when you need to. I’ll give you advice someone gave me. Don’t try to do everything by yourself. Sometimes, asking for help is exactly what you need. Even if it’s something small.”
The way Kyoko apologises before asking Shuichi for something this small does suggest that she’s very much not used to relying on others at all. Kyoko is of course naturally very capable and independent and doesn’t often need help in the first place, but she can also be reluctant to rely on others even when it would benefit her to do so. Good thing Shuichi can help her a little with that, in part thanks to all of the advice Kaito’s given him!
Shuichi:  “Ah, but… I might be getting a little *too* much help from everyone…”
Kyoko is a detective who maybe doesn’t rely on others enough, while Shuichi is a detective who relies on others maybe a little too much. It’s a neat contrast.
Kyoko:  “I never meant to hold it in… That was never my intention. When you involve yourself in someone else’s business, you can easily misjudge them.”
Shuichi:  “I’m sure you’re right. There are certainly situations like that. But aren’t there times that make you think… you want to really trust someone? Even if you might get hurt?”
Kyoko at least tells herself that she tries to refrain from personal ties and relying on others in order to remain detached and impartial for her detective work. That is perhaps more important for a homicide detective than it would be for a domestic detective like Shuichi. Then again, in canon, Shuichi had to solve a bunch of murders, and he managed to do that despite also having an emotional side that willingly formed bonds and wanted to believe in people. You don’t have to throw away Kyoko Kirigiri in order to be the Ultimate Detective, Kyoko!
Also, Shuichi’s words about wanting to trust someone even if you might get hurt are definitely paraphrasing Kaito’s principles on that topic here and I love it. He’s had much less of an issue with that notion in this AU when there haven’t been any murders, but maybe instead it was the beginnings of their friendship with Maki that prompted Shuichi to ask Kaito how he could believe in people so easily.
Maki Roll (featuring Chihiro)
…And than brings us rather conveniently onto the next friendly event I wanted to cover, because of course Kaito also has a scene with Maki.
Maki is also already Kaito’s sidekick in this scene, but unlike with Shuichi, we can’t just assume this went basically how it did in canon. See, Kaito (and implicitly also Shuichi, though he’s not in this scene) knows about Maki’s talent, but nobody else does. Which is in fact a huge difference from canon that warrants some lengthy speculation about how Maki even ended up as Kaito’s sidekick in this universe at all.
In canon, it only happened because Kokichi found out Maki’s talent and told everyone. Kaito started properly reaching out to her and trying to make her his sidekick after that, and since she had nothing to lose because the worst had already happened and her secret was already out, she didn’t put up that much resistance. Kaito’s continued belief in her despite knowing her true talent let Maki realise that people knowing wasn’t the absolute end of the world like she’d been terrified it would be.
Here, though, without a class-wide bombshell revealing Maki’s identity, it’s very remarkable that Kaito even knows at all. Throughout chapter 2, Maki was so terrified of anyone finding out her secret, because she was absolutely convinced that it’d make everyone hate and fear and try to kill her and she’d end up forced to kill them in self-defence, which she did not remotely want to do. That fear might not be quite as intense outside of a killing game, nor without a whole room full of proof of her talent readily available for anyone to wander into, but it’d still be there. She’d still be reluctant to get close to anyone even under the guise of being the Ultimate Child Caregiver, not only out of a belief that she doesn’t deserve to have friends, but also out of a fear that letting someone get too close will increase the risk of them finding out her secret somehow even if she’s trying to hide it.
So obviously Kaito’s persistence and stubbornness would still have been a huge and necessary factor here. Although he didn’t know Maki’s talent and therefore just how weak she was and how badly she needed it, he must have seen her as a potential sidekick anyway. She was still cutting herself off from the rest of the class for reasons that Kaito’s instincts could tell weren’t malicious, meaning he probably figured that she was running away from something and needed help. So he’d have kept trying to talk to her and include her in things and invite her to train with him and Shuichi and generally be his incredibly stubborn self at her.
But… because Maki’s secret wasn’t already out, it must have taken way more stubbornness from Kaito here than it did in canon to finally get through to her. She’d have realised that he’s trying to figure out why she’s so closed off and get her to open up, but she would be utterly convinced that telling him the truth would only make him fear her and give up on her, and probably also warn everyone else about her talent and ruin everything.
There’s two possibilities I can think of for how Maki eventually gave in and opened up. One is that Kaito and Shuichi managed to figure it out themselves after enough attempts to talk to her, through a combination of Shuichi’s detective skills and Kaito’s intuition for people. Then they gently confronted her about it, with a very clear message of “we know this is why you’re scared, but it’s okay, we trust you, and you can trust us not to tell anyone, we only want to help you”. I’m not totally sold on this idea, though, because it would still leave Maki with the fear that she couldn’t actually trust them, not after they figured out her worst secret without her consent. (Also, hello Shuichi’s issues about accidentally figuring out truths that the subject of them hates having exposed.)
The more likely possibility, then, is that Maki did eventually tell Kaito herself, not out of openly trusting him and being comfortable with him knowing (because she would never believe that anyone could be okay with her being a killer until she’s already seen it happen), but more out of just trying to get him to finally leave her alone already. Surely knowing that she’s a killer will make even a stubborn idiot like him give up on her and realise she’s not worth getting close to, right? But that’s still remarkable, because people finding out her talent is still the worst and most terrifying scenario imaginable to Maki. So while she’d be telling herself on the surface that this is just to get rid of him, she would still have had to genuinely trust somewhere deep down that Kaito would at least respect her secret and not tell anyone else, even if he’d also totally never want to speak to her again.
I’m pretty sure that’s roughly how this must have gone down, and that’s really incredible. Maki would have had no obvious, undeniable way to realise she could trust Kaito, not like she had in canon from the simple fact that he continued to believe in her despite knowing that she’s an assassin. Imagine the absolute persistent supportiveness Kaito would have needed to display in order for Maki to start to instinctively feel that way anyway. And consider how huge it is for Maki that she did end up coming to trust Kaito enough, even if she wasn’t admitting it to herself, that she was able to briefly lift her otherwise-unbreakable barrier of no-one must ever know, if only in what she was telling herself was an attempt to push him away. Kaito is so good, and Maki absolutely needed someone as stubbornly, recklessly kind as him to begin to get through to her.
Kaito:  “Hey, Maki Roll! You better remember our promise for tonight!”
Maki:  “Are you talking about training? You made that promise, not me. And stop calling me Maki Roll.”
These opening lines put this scene very early on in Maki’s sidekickhood. Kaito has started calling her Maki Roll, which it only took him a few days to do in canon after she’d become his sidekick (and after he knew she was an assassin and therefore that giving her the most un-assassin-like nickname would be a good way to help her). But Maki has not yet given up telling him not to, which also only took a few days.
Plus, Maki is still acting like the only reason she’s going to training is because Kaito is nagging her to and is not yet openly accepting that she’s choosing to go for her own sake. In fact, the way they talk about the promise like it’s not already a regular arrangement suggests that tonight may be the first time Maki will ever come to training, or at most the second, if it happened for the first time last night and Kaito told her to come again tomorrow.
That moment in which Maki finally gave in and told Kaito about her talent must have been no more than a few days ago, then. Kaito would of course have responded by reassuring her that he still believes in her, and that rather than pushing him away, she should be accepting his help in growing stronger, for which she should obviously start coming to training with him and Shuichi.
Kaito:  “Alright, you remember! I’ll see you there!”
Despite Maki acting like she’s only doing this because he’s nagging her, and not even explicitly promising she’ll be there, of course Kaito knows that she will definitely be there. He called it a promise in the first place because he knows that she has already made the choice to try and get stronger. And he can tell that she must already trust him on some level to have even told him her secret in the first place.
Maki:  “…Is that why you came to talk to me?”
Kaito:  “Nah, I’ve got a message from Kaede. She wants to talk about the promise you made with her. I dunno what kind of promise it is, but… since when were you guys so close?”
Maki:  “We’re not close, and I wouldn’t call my arrangement with Kaede a promise, either. She offered to play piano for the kids at my orphanage. That’s all.”
This is actually a promise Kaede makes if you do Maki’s FTEs with Kaede in the main game! It’s lovely that they also put it into this AU and made it an actual thing that happens, because man was that never going to actually be able to happen in canon for multiple reasons.
Maki is probably right to say that she and Kaede aren’t that close. If she’s this early on in being Kaito’s sidekick, she definitely hasn’t really started to open up much with other people either. But it seems that despite that, Kaede has tried approaching Maki anyway and had similar conversations with her as she has in her canon FTEs, because Kaede is lovely and always trying to make friends even with more guarded people like Maki.
Maki:  “But… I left that orphanage years ago. Kaede thinks I was the Ultimate Child Caregiver at that orphanage before I came here, but…”
This is of course the assumption Kaede was running under in her FTEs with Maki when she offered to play piano for the kids then. (Not that Kaede hypothetically learning Maki’s real identity would change anything, once she learned Maki’s reasons for it – if anything, it’d only make Kaede even more determined to do something nice for Maki and those kids. Kaede is just as good as Kaito is.)
Kaito:  “Hey, there’s no reason you can’t go to the orphanage, right, Maki Roll? So just take Kaede there with you. For the kids living peacefully there you worked so hard for… Let them hear Kaede’s music.”
It’s lovely what Kaito’s doing here. Maki is telling herself that she barely deserves to be going back near that happy life at the orphanage any more now that she’s a horrible murderer, but Kaito’s trying to reassure her that hey, none of that means she can’t at least visit and do something nice for the kids she cares about so much!
…And, okay, so apparently we’re also at a point after Maki has opened up about exactly why she became an assassin, which took several days longer than her initial decision to try and change (and happened after she’d given up protesting the Maki Roll). It’s a little surprising that she reached that point so quickly, because subconsciously trusting Kaito not to betray her talent to everyone is a lot different from actually telling him why she’s an assassin and more or less admitting that she never wanted it. So… I am starting to get the sense that the writers here maaaay not have fully thought through what they were implying with this scene’s opening lines, because those definitely gave the sense that Maki had barely started training if she was reluctant to even admit she was coming.
Unless maybe things happened in a different order in this universe, such that Maki had already begrudgingly told Kaito a few stories about her orphanage during his persistent pestering for her to open up (just like she does with Kaede’s attempts to reach out to her). Which might mean that when she finally threw up her hands and told him she’s a goddamn assassin so leave her alone, it wouldn’t be as much of a leap for her to then admit, with some more questioning from Kaito, that the orphanage stories were still true and are actually quite related to her being an assassin. Maybe.
Kaito:  “Oh! I just had a great idea too! How about me and Shuichi tag along? Yeah! Let’s do it! If Shuichi’s with us, I bet Kaede will get all psyched up!”
Aww, Kaito. It is making me very happy imagining this gathering of these four being friends at Maki’s orphanage and making the kids smile. (I bet Kaito is also very good with kids. Especially if they’re aware he’s the Ultimate Astronaut, letting him jump right into his inspiring hero role and tell them all sorts of exciting things about SPACE.)
…Kaito’s comment about how Shuichi’s presence will psyche Kaede up does imply that he might have figured those two have a bit of an unspoken romantic thing for each other. But even if that’s the case, I like to imagine that Kaito wouldn’t make any overt moves to act on this and try and set them up together without one of them directly asking him for help. After all, Kaito’s only working on a hunch here, and if his hunch happens to be wrong, then trying to push his friends into a romance they don’t actually want would be a dick move. (More on a similar concept regarding Kaito’s hunches in another scene next post.)
Maki:  “You want to tag along… and bring Shuichi?”
Kaito:  “Yeah! If there are any problems, Shuichi and I will help out!”
This is the real reason Kaito invited himself and Shuichi along, though. He can sense that Maki is uneasy doing something that comes so close to her personal life and the truth about herself when she’s including someone who doesn’t know her secret. As such, Kaito’s offering to go along with Shuichi to be there for her and help her feel safer. Since it doesn’t make much sense for there to be logistical problems with Kaede playing the piano to the kids, Kaito is really talking about the possibility of there being problems with Maki’s talent remaining secret. He’s saying that he and Shuichi will be there to cover for her, and, if worst comes to worst and her talent ends up coming out anyway, talk Kaede through the revelation and assure her that Maki still deserves to be treated like a person. (Kaede would definitely understand, of course, but she’d need some explanations, and Maki might not be comfortable giving those on her own.)
Kaito:  “Do you not want Kaede and the others to find out about your real talent? But… I know you don’t wanna distance yourself from them like when you first got here, yeah?”
Maki:  “…Don’t make assumptions about me.”
He’s right, though, isn’t he, Maki? However, she’s still not quite willing to admit that yet herself, so this is still quite early days, one way or another.
Maki:  “But… I guess I’ll give the orphanage a call.”
Kaito:  “Alright! Then it’s decided!”
Maki’s going to do it! I really, really get the sense that without Kaito’s reassurance, she wouldn’t have actually acted upon this and would have left Kaede hanging. Kaede might well have been trying to prod Maki about it herself and getting only vague uncertainty since Maki wasn’t truly comfortable doing it. That could be why Kaede asked Kaito to talk to her about it, having noticed that he seems to be closer to Maki than she is.
Maki does have a friendly event with Kaede, too, but it turns out to be more about Chihiro, who’s also in the scene. Maki and Kaede happen across Chihiro crying, and he explains that he found an injured bird that died before he could take it to Gundham to maybe save it.
Maki points out that that’s not Chihiro’s fault and Gundham might not have been able to save it anyway.
Chihiro:  “You’re… right… But when I thought about how it probably wanted to fly more, I just started crying…”
Chihiro is projecting his weakness issues onto this poor little injured bird that probably wished it was stronger, but then it didn’t manage to get any stronger and died because it was too weak! Aww, Chihiro.
Maki:  “I don’t think you should be crying over that, though… But… I do think it’s fortunate it had someone to cry for it.”
Maki looks distant during that second part, because apparently she’s also somewhat projecting her issues onto this bird. She’s acknowledging that it’s sad when someone suffers alone without anyone knowing and being able to care about it. In a very, very indirect way, she’s saying that her past suffering matters, and that she deserves to have others know and feel sorry for her about what she’s been through. That’s a big deal coming from Maki!  (And I’m sure others do know about her suffering; if she’s admitting this, then she’s probably already told Kaito and Shuichi about some of the more awful parts of her assassin training by now.)
Chihiro wants to bury the bird, so both Kaede and Maki suggest they should take it to Gundham, who’d know about how best to do this sort of thing. Maki offers to come along, which Chihiro seems surprised about.
Kaede:  “You know, Chihiro… Maki may seem edgy on the outside, but she’s actually very sincere.”
Maki:  [pouting] “…You don’t need to come with us, Kaede.”
Kaede:  “Why!? I only said the truth!”
Maki is a good caregiver! And also embarrassed at Kaede earnestly telling near-strangers how caring she is. Kaede is good and I hope she and Maki continue to be friends; she’d be able to help Maki out a lot too, even without necessarily having to know her secret.
Maki:  “I can’t just leave a crybaby like you alone. That would leave a bad taste in my mouth…”
Maki mentioned during her FTEs that her best friend from the orphanage (who is no longer alive) was something of a crybaby who tried her best to be strong. Is Chihiro reminding Maki of her friend here? Because that’s adorable.
There’s a little more Maki and Chihiro in one of Maki’s third year winter events, not precisely as a follow-up to this but I might as well cover it here anyway. Maki happens across Chihiro in the dining hall, and after some conversation about Chihiro not having the strength to open a jar (but wanting to keep trying rather than having Maki do it for him), Chihiro comments that Maki must be like a reliable big sister to the kids she looks after.
Maki:  “I don’t think… I’m that reliable.”
Chihiro:  “Huh, why?”
Maki:  “I’m not good at taking care of people and I keep secrets. You can’t rely on someone like that.”
Makiiii, you are very good at taking care of people. And you only keep your secret to protect both yourself and other people, not out of any kind of malice or intent to deceive, so that doesn’t inherently make you unreliable. I guess in this universe Kaito never got the chance to give his speech about how having secrets is just human and doesn’t necessarily make someone a bad person.
Chihiro:  “You keep secrets?”
Maki:  “Nothing. Forget it.”
Chihiro:  “Um… Uhhh… Keeping secrets might be bad… But I don’t think it’s strange… Even I… have secrets.”
Turns out this is something Maki and Chihiro have in common! Chihiro isn’t keeping his secret for a malicious reason either, nor does it make him any less worth relying on because of it!
Chihiro:  “Maki… is there anyone you talked to about your secret? Or have you not told anyone?”
Maki:  “Well… I have told someone.”
The fact that Maki says that she told Kaito and Shuichi her secret makes it all the more likely that the reason they found out really is because she slowly grew to trust them enough to tell them. I don’t think she’d word it that way if they’d been the ones to figure it out first.
Chihiro:  “Okay, then you’re fine. It’s a bit of a relief to have someone to talk to.”
Maki:  “That’s true… I actually do feel a bit relieved.”
Chihiro is saying this because, in this AU, he’s entrusted Mondo with his secret and Mondo has been training him to get stronger, a lot like Kaito has with Maki! This is a big thing they have in common, and it’s lovely to have that brought up here and see them both agreeing that it’s nice not to have to bear their secret alone.
Honestly, if Chihiro had happened to be in Kaito’s class instead, he’d probably have admired Kaito’s strength and gone to him instead with his secret to ask for help getting stronger, and damn right Kaito would have immediately taken him on as a sidekick and it would have been adorable. But instead, Chihiro has Mondo, which in some ways is essentially the same thing and in some ways is rather different, as we’ll get into later in this post.
Year 1 seasonal events
The first year’s seasonal event is the summer sports festival. There aren’t too many here I want to cover, but I might as well group them together for it anyway.
Show ‘em what you got in the three-legged race! Maybe you should talk to someone before the race. But who?
-      My sidekick, of course!
One fun thing about the way the game does these seasonal events is that the narration and the choices are written in the POV of the character you’re playing as. Kaito is so into this and so eager to talk to his sidekick – obviously he wouldn’t pick anyone else! (He did keep saying back in Salmon Team that the sidekick totally wouldn’t pick anyone besides the hero – and that at least is something that goes both ways!)
Kaito:  “Alright, bro! It’s finally time to show off the results of all our training! Don’t hesitate! There’s no way we can lose after training through blood, sweat and tears!”
Shuichi:  “Blood, sweat and tears sounds like a little too much… But it’s true that this training will give us an edge in the festival. I feel like we can win!”
Of course their training will help! Not just in the sense that it’s made Shuichi physically fitter, but also just because it means Kaito and Shuichi are so very in-sync with each other. The three-legged race is an event that relies less on physical prowess and more just on extremely good teamwork, so it’s perfect for Kaito in general, and especially for him and Shuichi since they’re such close friends. I bet Kaito signed them both up the moment he heard there was going to be a three-legged race, probably before even asking if Shuichi was up for it (because he already knew he would be).
Kaito:  “I’ve already decided I’m gonna win at everything today. So as my sidekick, you better support me!”
Kaito is still pretending like the sidekick thing is even remotely about Shuichi making him look good when really it’s literally the opposite of that. Though I suppose events like this give him an excuse to actually make things seem this way for once, so that he can set a super-awesome example for his sidekick to strive for.
Despite acting like he definitely wouldn’t have chosen to talk to anyone but Shuichi, Kaito can also talk to his opponents, one of whom happens to be Fuyuhiko. (Another event implies that Fuyuhiko’s partner in this race is Kazuichi, which means we were so close to seeing Kaito and Kazuichi interact! They do not have a single interaction in this mode and I feel incredibly robbed.)
Kaito:  “Oh hey, Fuyuhiko. Never thought I’d be going up against you!”
Kaito starts with this, so it seems he’s aware of what Fuyuhiko’s like and knows that it appears to be unlike him to be at events like this. (This is, after all, a Fuyuhiko before his canon character development in which he warmed up to everyone.)
Fuyuhiko:  “What, am I not allowed to be here or something? Did you think I’d just ditch school events?”
Kaito:  “Nah, man! I’m glad you’re here! I always thought you were the type that’d show up to this stuff!”
Fuyuhiko:  “Geez… don’t act like you’ve got me figured out. I never wanted to do any of this lame shit.”
But Kaito does have Fuyuhiko figured out, doesn’t he! Despite what he said at first, which was based on how Fuyuhiko appears on the surface, Kaito can also see past that and tell that really Fuyuhiko does want to join in with this kind of thing with his schoolmates and is just very prickly about it. And by being so forward with the “Yeah, of course you’d do this!”, he’s also trying to get Fuyuhiko to realise that it’s really not so embarrassing to want this and he should be more open with it. Kaito is so good.
Kaito’s other opponents, and last options to talk to for this event, are Hiro and Hifumi. There’s nothing of substance in that conversation other than pointing out how hilariously ill-equipped they are for a three-legged race. And since Fuyuhiko and Kazuichi are not super in-sync with each other and liable to bicker, Kaito and Shuichi definitely destroyed the competition and showed everyone what an awesome team they are.
Kaito appears in a few other people’s sports festival events, but none of them are that noteworthy. He suggests Gonta should play more aggressively at basketball, protests that his face is not dumb-looking when Mahiru decides to take photos of the three-legged race, and encourages Peko to be enthusiastic in cheering on her friends.
Kaito:  “Shout whatever you think will help. That’ll become their strength out there!”
Words becoming other people’s strength is so very luminary of him and it’s lovely to see him passing that idea onto others.
Maki has a brief noteworthy bit during the sports festival, in an event you get as Kyoko, who is one of Maki’s opponents in the girls’ three-legged race.
Maki:  “Even though sports festivals are a pain… I don’t intend to hold back. There’s someone in my class who would nag me if I don’t do my best.”
Guess who she’s talking about! Sports festivals may be just for bragging rights and not really Maki’s thing, but Kaito has managed to instil her with at least a little of his philosophy that anything and everything is worth getting passionate about and giving your all.
The sports festival happens in June, while Japanese school years start in April. Which means that, man, Kaito really got to work fast on his prolonged stubborn pestering to get through to Maki if he’s already done so in the space of only a few months. …Or, since she only says “someone in my class” and not “a friend”, maybe this is before Maki has actually told him her secret (though she’d still be reluctant to admit he’s her friend for a little while after that). But even if she’s not his sidekick yet, clearly he’s still been pestering her plenty about doing her best and getting involved in things, because of course he has.
Meanwhile, Shuichi’s events for the sports festival involve him tracking down and apprehending Monokuma, who was causing chaos for the hell of it (yes, Monokuma is here in this non-despair AU as a separate autonomous character, somehow, just go with it). Shuichi’s using his detective skills to help people, just like Kaito was encouraging him to!
Mondo (featuring heroes and sidekicks)
Another of Kaito’s friendly events, and one which is followed up on with a third year seasonal event, is with Mondo. While I am endlessly sad that there are no interactions between Kaito and Kazuichi… perhaps that’s understandable, because Kaito would have full-on sidekicked the hell out of Kazuichi and it would have been a whole thing that this mode wouldn’t have room to do justice. But I do also like Mondo a lot, so maybe Kaito’s interactions with him here are the next best thing.
Mondo:  “…”
Kaito:  “What’s up? Is something bothering you?”
Given Kaito’s intuition, he’s probably right to assume that something’s bothering Mondo here. After all, Mondo definitely has a lot of issues that he hasn’t remotely sorted out yet.
Kaito:  “Alright, then I’ll tell you about the universe! It’ll make your problems look insignificant!”
While this could read as such, Kaito is not saying this in any kind of self-centred sense of “my space stuff is more important than your issues”. Rather, he’s trying to help Mondo realise his problems maybe aren’t quite as big and as scary as he’s making them out to be. “The universe is impossibly vast” isn’t necessarily just something Kaito says to geek out about space. Perhaps it’s also a way he’s found to help put his problems in perspective (you know, when he has them, which is definitely never and why are you asking where his parents are), so he’s trying to do that for Mondo, too.
Mondo:  “You talk about space and shit all the time, but… you ain’t even been there yet, right? And even so, you’ve still got such a confident look on your face.”
Kaito:  “Of course. I’m Kaito Momota, Luminary of the Stars! It’s already been decided that I’m gonna go to space! Right now is just before that happens!”
This is such a straightforwardly Kaito outlook. It doesn’t matter that he hasn’t been to space yet, he’s definitely going to, so he might as well carry himself like somebody who already has! He’s so good at having confidence in himself and what his future holds.
Mondo:  “It pisses me off, but… hearing you say something like that makes it sound possible. Space, huh? To have a dream like that, you gotta have some real balls, man.”
…And maybe that sort of outlook is the kind of thing that could help Mondo. Kaito presents himself the way he does not just to make himself look good, but more importantly to try and inspire others to have that same incredible confidence in themselves.
Kaito:  “Right!? I knew you’d get me, Mondo! Space is huge! It’s filled with the unknown! It’s a man’s passion to explore it, right!?”
Mondo:  “A man’s passion… Like the wind on ya when you’re riding your motorcycle at top speed? …Is it something like that?”
Kaito:  “That’s right! Just like that! It’s somewhere you’ll never reach if you live normally!”
Look at these manly dorks. Even though exploring space and riding a motorbike are two very different things, I like that Kaito agrees they basically both fall under the same principle – it’s about pushing the limits and doing whatever you’re most passionate about, no matter how out-there it is. Kaito’s concept of “a man’s passion” is somewhat different and more specific than just his general concept of manliness, and in his case, it’s all about that passion for SPACE. Still not inherently gendered, I might add.
(Mondo also has his own general concept of manliness, of course, and his is definitely very gendered, although there’s still a decent overlap with Kaito’s in terms of things like integrity and honour.)
Kaito:  “Hey, what’s your dream, Mondo? I bet yours is filled with fire and passion!”
Mondo:  “Nah, I… ain’t got something like that.”
Mondo does in fact have a dream – he wants to quit his bike gang and become a carpenter when he graduates. But it seems he’s embarrassed to admit that, perhaps because it doesn’t sound “fiery and passionate” enough next to Kaito’s dream of space.
Kaito:  “Really? Are you only looking at the past or something? You can’t move forward in life if you’re looking backwards, y’know?”
Some good advice and definitely something Mondo needs to hear! He is very stuck on the past and what happened to his brother, when he should be looking to the future and trying his best to move on from that.
(Also remember that Kaito lost his parents, and while that presumably wasn’t at all his fault like Daiya’s death kind of was Mondo’s fault, Kaito is still very much using his past pain to push him forwards rather than hold him back.)
Mondo:  “…”
Kaito:  “What? You don’t wanna tell me? Don’t compare your dream to mine, y’know? You’ll get scared by the size of the universe…”
Again, this is not Kaito doing a self-centred “my dream is better than yours”. In fact, it’s the opposite – he’s telling Mondo that he shouldn’t worry about comparing himself to others. Just because most people don’t have dreams as ridiculously huge and over-the-top as Kaito’s dream of space, that doesn’t make their own dream any less important if it’s something they’re equally passionate about! The example Kaito is trying to set as a luminary isn’t about inspiring everyone to literally share his goal of going to space, but rather to just be as passionate about their own goals as Kaito is about his!
Kaito:  “Then chase your dream with confidence! Don’t think your dream is too small or you’ll become small yourself!”
Mondo:  “Like hell I’d do something like that! I’m gonna be the best in the universe at my dream!”
Kaito:  “Heh, that’s what I like to hear!”
Exactly! Being a carpenter may be an ordinary job, but that doesn’t make it small and insignificant, not if it’s what Mondo’s really passionate about! And Kaito succeeded in getting Mondo to feel that way! He’s going to be the best carpenter ever!
Kaito is so good. Mondo has a lot of issues he needs to work out, and while Kaito didn’t really begin to get into any of them, he still managed to encourage Mondo to be more positive about his future. I always say that Kaito presents himself with so much overblown confidence to try and set an example for others to do the same, and here’s an instance of that very tangibly working on someone and helping them out.
As a brief interlude between the two Kaito and Mondo scenes, Mondo can end up serving Shuichi from the yakisoba stand he’s working at for the school festival in a second-year seasonal event.
Mondo:  “Thanks for coming, it’s on me!”
Shuichi:  “Hm? That’s… Are you sure?”
Mondo:  “Hey, don’t worry about it. Any buddy of that spaceman is a buddy of mine.”
Aww, Mondo really does appreciate Kaito’s encouragement! He didn’t need to make a thing of it in front of Shuichi at all – Kaito would never know or care that he hadn’t – but he did anyway. Mondo is a good guy. This kind of suggests that maybe he and Kaito have been hanging out offscreen a bit more than the one scene we saw – evidently not to full-on sidekick levels, but at least a little.
Mondo:  “He’s like a younger brother to me. Seriously, it’s on me, man.”
Shuichi:  “…So that’s what he is to you, huh? You’re both the same age, though.”
Yes, Mondo, that is definitely what he is to you. While he’s happy to show his appreciation for Kaito, Mondo doesn’t want to tarnish his tough-guy image (nobody must know how weak he really is!!!) enough to admit that really Kaito’s the one who’s helped him. Mondo is totally a born big brother figure, it’s definitely not like he was actually the little brother who adored and looked up to his big bro or anything.
Shuichi is right to be sceptical, not only because Kaito and Mondo are the same age, but also because he knows that Kaito is always the supportive figure and is highly unlikely to end up being treated like a younger brother by anyone.
Shuichi ends up insisting that he repays Mondo’s free yakisoba sometime and that he’ll bring Kaito along. The three of them hanging out would be adorable! It’s a shame we don’t get to see it.
Then, in one of Mondo’s third year winter events, he ends up bumping into Kaito on a nighttime walk. Most of the scene is just Kaito being very enthusiastic about space and confident about getting there one day.
Mondo:  “With that kinda confidence, I think you might actually make it up there…”
Kaito:  “Well of course! I’m the Ultimate Astronaut, y’know!? Everyone told me it was impossible… But the impossible is possible, all you gotta do is make it so!”
Ayyyy! Of course this is still a thing in this AU. Plus a very rare instance of Kaito referring to himself as the Ultimate Astronaut rather than the Luminary of the Stars, perhaps only because he’s literally talking about being an astronaut and going to space.
Kaito:  “You can always change your present and your future, as long as you don’t give up!”
Mondo:  “You’re right. I can’t change the past, but I can do something for the future.”
But Kaito also reiterates this advice from before, and it really does seem to have got through to Mondo and helped him move on from his brother’s death. This scene doesn’t add much, but it’s nice to underline what Kaito did for Mondo and show that it really did stick.
Kaito:  “Yeah, that’s the spirit! Do your best, even after you graduate, Mondo!”
Mondo:  “Don’t talk to me like that, I’m not one of your sidekicks…”
Heh, I like how this implies that they’ve had enough conversations for Kaito to have told Mondo plenty about his sidekicks, allowing Mondo to have figured out roughly what he really means by the word. Mondo isn’t exactly one of Kaito’s sidekicks, no, since Kaito hasn’t quite made it his personal business to help Mondo out in every single way he can… but since Kaito has helped Mondo out a little anyway, it’s not too far off from that.
It’s almost a shame we don’t get more insight into these conversations they had about Kaito’s sidekicks, because the sidekick thing is rather similar to what Mondo has been doing with Chihiro in this AU, in that Mondo’s been guiding Chihiro through physical training to help him get stronger. Mondo wouldn’t call it this, but Chihiro is effectively his sidekick in Kaito’s definition of the word!
So, even though scenes featuring only DR1 characters would otherwise not really belong in this V3 commentary, I am going to talk a little about the Mondo and Chihiro scenes here for the purposes of comparing their relationship to the one Kaito has with his sidekicks. When I say that, I mean specifically Kaito’s relationship with his sidekicks in canon, since in this AU he’s genuinely fine, but in canon he was not as strong as he was pretending to be, a lot like Mondo. And by “sidekicks” I of course mean particularly Shuichi, since he’s the one Kaito secretly looked up to and saw as already greater than himself, much like Mondo does with Chihiro. See? Similarities! But there are quite a few differences, too.
Mondo and Chihiro have two scenes together, the first a regular friendly event and the second as one of Mondo’s third year seasonal events. The first scene presumably happens not especially long after Chihiro has begun training, because it features him struggling to do even half the push-ups expected of him, while Mondo reassures him that he’s just got to keep working at it. The second scene has Chihiro remark that the exercise makes him feel refreshed, which Mondo points out is great progress when it used to make him feel sore all the time. Chihiro agrees that maybe he really has got at least a little stronger over the past three years, to the point that he’s starting to feel brave enough to tell everyone the truth about himself before they graduate.
Chihiro:  “Even though I can never be as strong as you, I’ve been doing my best… I feel like… I can tell everyone. And it’s all thanks to you, Mondo.”
Mondo:  “Hey, come on. I didn’t do anything special.”
Look at how Chihiro looks up Mondo as the perfect ideal of strength that he’ll never quite be able to reach and has no idea that Mondo has any kind of weakness. That sure is familiar.
Similarly familiar is the way Mondo feels like he barely did anything to help (because it was really all Chihiro’s own strength and hard work, right?). And yet, simply having Mondo there both as an example to strive for and as a friend so that he wasn’t doing this alone made a huge difference from Chihiro’s point of view. It only takes a nudge, but that nudge is vital! You did help him, Mondo!
Mondo:  “Besides, from the very beginning, you…”
Chihiro:  “Huh?”
Mondo:  “…Nah, nothing.”
Obviously, Mondo was about to say that he feels Chihiro has always been strong – stronger than him – but then backed out of admitting it. This is reminiscent of the part in chapter 3’s first training session in which Kaito almost admitted that Shuichi wasn’t weak like Maki was, but then caught himself and changed the subject. In Kaito’s case, though, I think he was only just starting to realise that he saw Shuichi this way and wouldn’t have known how to properly articulate it even if he’d actually tried to (because wouldn’t that mean that Shuichi was never really his sidekick and didn’t really need him at all? and NOPE nope abort let’s just not even think about that). But here with Mondo, I get the sense that he’s already been very consciously aware the whole time that Chihiro is much stronger than him and is simply unwilling to admit it to anyone but himself.
Both our pairs of training buddies have a delightful thing going on where they each look up to their friend for having a kind of strength that they lack and assume that the other is stronger than them because of it. In Kaito and Shuichi’s case, they’re both types of emotional strength: Shuichi’s ability to focus on finding the truth no matter how much it hurts, and Kaito’s ability to keep being positive and upbeat no matter how bad things get. Ultimately, they’re still basically both as strong as each other, just in different ways. But with Mondo and Chihiro, Mondo’s strength is entirely physical, while Chihiro’s strength is entirely emotional, so they’re not really comparable at all. Which means that when it comes to the more meaningful kind of strength, the emotional kind, Chihiro is just stronger than Mondo.
The problem is that Chihiro doesn’t seem to realise that emotional strength is equally if not more important than physical strength. Yet Mondo clearly does, since he knows Chihiro is stronger than him – so if only he’d tell Chihiro that! That’d have helped Chihiro realise what he really needed to be striving for, and that getting physically stronger, even if it’d help him feel more confident in himself, was not really the main point. (If Chihiro had been Kaito’s sidekick, Kaito would absolutely have made that point clear and let Chihiro know that simply by trying to change he’s already grown stronger than he was before.)
Mondo wouldn’t even have needed to mention his own emotional weakness while hypothetically telling Chihiro that emotional strength is more important, so he shouldn’t have had an inherent reason not to do so. Perhaps the issue could be that Mondo was afraid that talking to Chihiro about emotional strength would lead Chihiro to probe about Mondo’s emotional strength too and realise the truth about him.
It could also just be that Mondo wasn’t at all used to this whole having-a-“sidekick” thing. Therefore he felt that the only way he could really help was by helping Chihiro with the thing he is good at, aka physical strength, and he didn’t feel like he was qualified to talk about emotional strength at all. …Essentially what I’m trying to say here is that maybe Mondo didn’t want to talk through Chihiro’s emotional weaknesses while still refusing to admit to his own because he didn’t want to be a giant hypocrite. That’s very possible. After all, he doesn’t have Kaito’s double-standard of “but I’m the hero so it’s different for me because they need me to be strong already” that caused Kaito to not even realise his hypocrisy.
See, Mondo is hiding his weakness here simply out of weakness, that same kind of cowardice that Kaito pointed out in Maki before he convinced her to face her issues and try and change. Mondo’s just too scared to bring his weakness out into the open and have everyone know that he’s not the tough guy he claims to be and that his brother’s death was his fault.
Kaito also didn’t want to admit to his weakness out of fear of shattering the image others have of him, but that was for other people’s sake and not his own, because he was convinced that he wouldn’t be able to support Shuichi or Maki or the others any more if they knew the truth. Mondo also evidently doesn’t want Chihiro to know that he’s weak, but I feel like that’s more for his own sake, because Chihiro looking up to him so much lets him feel strong and helps him continue to hide from the weakness that he’s too scared to admit to. He seems relatively willing to admit to himself that really Chihiro would be fine without him, so it’s not that Mondo thinks revealing his weakness would cause Chihiro any problems.
Although, there is some level of selflessness in Mondo hiding his weakness – not in terms of Chihiro, but in terms of the members of his gang. They all look up to Mondo as their awesome leader who bested his big bro in a bike race (even if that ended tragically, that was Daiya’s fault for getting reckless because he was about to lose, wasn’t it?). So Mondo’s afraid that if they learn the truth and how weak he really is, the whole gang will fall apart. I’d like to believe that’s not actually the case and that his gang members are good enough bros that they’d understand and be supportive of him and still look up to him anyway even if they knew. But it’s hard to be sure of that without knowing much about what they’re like, so it’s possible that Mondo actually does have a more legitimate reason to be afraid of this than Kaito ever did.
Once Mondo and Chihiro are done training in their winter scene and Chihiro has left, Mondo has one last line to himself…
Mondo:  “I wonder… if I can change too. I don’t know if I’ll ever be as strong as you, Chihiro.”
Just admitting to that desire to change is the first step, Mondo! And with that alone, in some ways, Mondo has immediately got further than Kaito ever did in canon.
Admitting it to Chihiro would be a bigger help, though. After all, even Chihiro himself needed someone else to share his problems with in order to be able to change in the way that Mondo is admiring so much. It’s a shame that Mondo can’t even use that as inspiration to find the courage to do that himself, in order to start working on his weaknesses like he so clearly wants to do. You’d only need to tell one person to begin with, Mondo! And Chihiro would keep looking up to you for your physical strength anyway, because that’s a separate thing that you still undeniably have!
(Which was totally a different thing for Kaito, since Shuichi looked up to him for his emotional strength, so surely Kaito admitting that he’s emotionally weak would have ruined that entirely! It couldn’t possibly be that he’s still emotionally strong in some ways even if he’s weak in others and Shuichi would still have every reason to admire him – if he’s weak at all then that instantly means he’s a failure as a hero, right?)
If only Chihiro had ever learned about Mondo’s weakness one way or another, he would definitely have been able to help. Even if he wouldn’t have exactly known how to, he’s an absolute sweetheart who’d have done his best anyway to try and reassure and encourage Mondo that if even Chihiro can work to get stronger and admit his secret to everyone, surely Mondo can too!
It does seem like Mondo made some decent progress over his time at Hope’s Peak, based on this winter scene with Kaito and another one with Taka in which he openly talks about his plans to quit the gang and become a carpenter (Taka is adorably proud that he wants to put in the effort and contribute to society). That’s a little bit thanks to Kaito, but also a lot thanks to simply having friends like Chihiro and Taka and having had time to reflect on things. But if only he’d been brave enough to confess his weakness and what happened to his brother to at least just Chihiro, they could have talked about it more and Mondo could have made a lot more progress on the real root of his issues. Alas.

<AN> Me? Stop doing Saturday updates of hbad just to start them again when they’re least expected? Of course!!
I don’t think even I saw this coming when I first had the idea for a future!ajay x mc AU about a month and a half ago. And 103 pages, 35990 words, and 43 days later... wow. This is it. I’m really tearing up, honestly.
You guys have been so amazingly supportive of this, and I couldn’t be more grateful! This, the thirteenth and final chapter, is dedicated to everyone who read, liked, replied to or reblogged any part of this fic. You guys are my lifeblood, thank you so much for reading.
Before I do the tag list and finally get this show on the road, I wanted to share this comment I left on the fic the second I finished drafting chapter 13. It’s... absolutely me.

Grace woke up Monday morning to sunlight streaming through the windows into the peach-colored room and a pillow pressed up against her back. She groaned and rolled over, stretching out, and finding the other side of the bed empty.
She was disappointed until she heard conversation and laughing from the other side of the door and a delicious smell wafting in. Grace was hungry. She popped her back, then sank her toes into the soft carpet. After pushing herself up she rummaged through her bag, grabbing a sports bra and a pair of shorts to wear with the t-shirt she’d slept in. She brought the collar up to her nose and sniffed–it smelled just like him, a soapy smell with a little mint. She quickly put the clothes on, then opened the door to Ajay’s bedroom.
She leaned against the door frame for a moment, a soft smile crossing her face as she looked out into the kitchen. He was there, stirring something in a saucepan while his roommate (his name was Jake, Grace dimly recalled) sat at the breakfast bar nursing a large cup of coffee. A timer went off somewhere in the kitchen.
“Dammit, I almost forgot about the muffins,” she heard Ajay say. “Jake, could you please–”
“I’m on it.” As Jake was getting off his stool, he turned and noticed Grace.
“Hey, Grace!” he called over with a smile as he walked around to the oven. Ajay whipped his head around, his face lighting up when he saw her.
“Good morning, sleepyhead.”
Grace pushed herself off the door frame and walked over. Jake, having gotten the english muffins out of the oven, gave a huge yawn as he walked over to Grace.
“Sleep well? I didn’t,” he smirked, holding out a hand for her to shake. She turned scarlet, instantly realizing what he meant.
“Jake, stop being a dick,” Ajay called from the kitchen. Grace tentatively took Jake’s hand, opening her mouth to apologize when he shook his head.
“Don’t worry about it. Really.” Then Jake turned back to the breakfast bar, climbing back on his stool. Grace made her way over to Ajay, wrapping her arms around his waist from behind while he waited for the poached eggs to finish cooking. He turned his head to kiss her on the forehead.
“Grace, this fool is bringing someone home at least once a week. I guarantee you he didn’t care.”
Still red, Grace buried her face between Ajay’s shoulder blades, taking the moment to breathe in the smell of his t-shirt. But she dropped the subject.
“What are you making?” she asked in a voice still a little rough from just waking up.
“Eggs benedict,” he said proudly. “I’ve been working on the hollandaise sauce for days.”
“Aw, all this for me?”
“No, for me too. And for Jake, because apparently he thinks he can come out here, make fun of me, and still get free breakfast.”
“It’s true, though! You’re literally making enough for three.”
“I’ll throw this plate at your head,” Ajay joked, not even turning to look at him. Ajay made a move towards a slotted spoon on the counter, so Grace released him and went over to sit at the breakfast bar.
“So. Jake. I want to know all his embarrassing stories,” Grace said. Jake took another long sip of his coffee and rubbed at his eyes.
“Well, most of what he’s done lately has been talking nonstop about you,” Jake grinned.
“Jake!” Ajay yelled, nearly dropping an egg back into the pan. Jake just laughed, and Grace joined in.
“Oh, that reminds me,” Jake said, patting the counter, “Why were you guys laughing last night? Ajay, did you-?”
“Okay, we are definitely not talking about this,” Ajay said hurriedly, cutting him off. Grace blushed again, but smiled apologetically when he set a plate down in front of her. She eagerly dug in to the eggs benedict, finding the hollandaise sauce to be a perfect compliment to the egg, canadian bacon, and english muffin.
“This tastes amazing! I could get used to this.”
“Anything for you. Coffee?” Ajay asked.
“Ooh, yes please. Two sugars and a little milk.”
“Coming right up.”
“Hey I’ll take another cup, black,” Jake piped up. Ajay glared at him as he set Grace’s mug down in front of her.
“Get it yourself.”
Jake, hands up in surrender, walked around to the coffee machine. Ajay finished serving up the eggs, then took a seat across from Grace. Once she’d finished a bite, he pulled her in for a kiss. Then he tucked a stray piece of hair behind her ear.
“How are you doing?” he asked quietly.
“Amazingly,” she replied, picking his hand up and kissing the back. Ajay was about to kiss her again when Jake settled back on his stool, fresh cup of coffee in hand.
“So, Grace,” Jake said, “Tell me about yourself! Ajay’s told me a lot, but that’s mostly been about your talent or how amazing you are.” Ajay turned red, burying his face in his hands and groaning. “I want to know something with more substance.”
“Well, um, what do you want to know?”
He paused, possibly thinking over possible questions. “What’s your favorite thing to do on a free weeknight?”
Grace tilted her head, considering the question. “I’d have to say watch movies. I have all these movies, old and new stuff I got from thrift stores, and I’ve been slowly working my way through them.”
Jake’s face lit up. “Oh, you like movies? That’s awesome. Ajay, you didn’t tell me she was this cool!”
“Pretty sure I did,” Ajay retorted, then turned to Grace. “He’s an indie film editor,” he explained.
Jake checked his watch and cursed, getting up. “Speaking of which, I have to go. I’m almost late and it’s your fault.”
“Payback!” Ajay yelled at his retreating back. Then he turned back to Grace.
“Sorry about him.”
“I’m embarrassed!” Grace wailed, putting her hands in front of her face. Ajay tugged her wrists away.
“Don’t be. He’s literally done that exact same thing to me over and over. He doesn’t care, he just likes to tease.”
“If you insist…”
Ajay grinned at her and sat back, finishing up his breakfast. “You like the eggs?”
“Loved them,” Grace replied. “The sauce was perfect and the muffins were even better. I’m lucky to have snapped you up, with all these baking skills. I thought your cooking was like a dream in high school, I didn’t know they could get better.”
“Oh, I did a summer abroad in Paris during college and took a few classes there. I still can’t even compare to the experts. But thank you, I’m glad you’re happy.”
“Ajay, you know I’d be happy here if you made me a bowl of cereal. You make me happy, the delicious food is just a plus.”
He shook his head and beamed at her. “How did I get lucky enough to get a second chance with you?”
“We’re both lucky.” Grace leaned in to kiss him, but jumped back when Jake bustled through the apartment, a briefcase over his shoulder.
“See you guys.”
“Bye!” Ajay called, then stood up to shut the door behind him and swept Grace up into a bruising kiss, running his hands down her sides.
“I thought he’d never leave,” he whispered, making her giggle. He kissed her deeply, then pulled back.
“So, we’ve got about four hours until we have to be at strike. Did you want to go home, or do you want to stay here?”
“I’ll stay here. It’s closer to the theatre. And also that means I get to spend more time with my boyfriend, so it’s a win-win.”
“Great,” he smiled. “Anything in particular you want to do?”
“Do you have Netflix?”
“Yep!”
“Then let’s watch a movie and cuddle.” Grace decided.
“Sounds great to me! Which movie?”
“Ooh, what about Hairspray?”
“You have good taste. I’ll get it cued up, you grab some blankets from my bed.”
A few hours later, Grace and Ajay watched the credits scroll across the scene. Ajay’s arm was still around her, her legs thrown across his lap.
“Every time I watch that movie I remember why it’s my favorite,” Grace sighed. Ajay laughed at her gently, then pulled his arm back. She took her legs off his lap, turning to face him.
“Okay, now we’ve got one hour before strike. And I actually thought of something I wanted to do,” he said, gently taking her hand.
Grace wiggled her eyebrows at him.
“No! I mean, yes, but I actually wanted to say something.”
“Alright, go for it,” Grace said, taking in his serious expression. “Everything okay?”
“Of course. I just need to say something, in the interest of complete honesty between us.”
“Spit it out,” Grace said, growing concerned. He didn’t make eye contact, instead staring at their linked hands.
“Okay. So,” he huffed, “I don’t know if I should qualify it by saying ‘again’ or ‘still’, but…” he trailed off, seemingly losing his nerve. She tightened her grip on his hand, trying to offer him support. But it was hard to support him when she had no idea what was going to come out of his mouth next. He took in a deep, shuddering breath and finally met her eyes.
“Grace, I love you.”
She let the words resonate around the small apartment, her grip on his hands slackening and her eyes widening. He looked like he wanted badly to take it back, but they both knew he couldn’t.
“I- Ajay,” Grace started, then stopped suddenly. It was as if her entire brain had switched off when he’d said those words. Her heart started beating faster, like it was making up for her head’s inactivity.
He squeezed her hand, looking a little sad but still smiling. She looked away, still trying desperately to figure out how she felt about it.
“You don’t have to say it back, I know it’s really soon and we’ve both been through a lot, but I had to say it. I don’t know if it’s because of the friendship we rebuilt over the course of the show, or if it’s because we rekindled something, but that’s how I feel. And I won’t say it anymore until you’re comfortable with it. But I needed to tell you.”
He kept rambling, but Grace didn’t register any of the words he said past that. Tears pricked in her eyes, and her brain was finally startled back into action. Between the tears and the pounding in her chest, Grace figured out exactly how she was feeling.
“I love you too,” she said suddenly, cutting him off. She finally looked back at him, lacing their fingers back together. “I love you too.”
She watched as the realization spread across his face, a hesitant smile forming there.
“You love me?” he asked, voice shaky.
“I love you,” she replied, and found it to be the truest, rawest feeling in her head. “It’s not too soon. Between our friendship, our previous relationship and all the emotions of last night, I… it’s not too soon. It’s the perfect time. I love you again, and I love you still.”
They sat and stared at each other for a moment, lost in a universe all their own. She watched as he went from near disbelief to shock to pure love, something that she’d seen in his eyes before but never quite this much. He pulled her to him and captured her lips in a passionate kiss, holding her tightly against him. When they separated, he pulled her into a hug, pressing his face into her shoulder.
“I love you,” he whispered to her, repeating it over and over. She leaned back to kiss his forehead and to cup his face.
“I love you too.”

When Gabriel woke up this time, the first thing he noticed was that his grace was gone again. So much for Chuck feeling sorry for him. The second thing was that he felt, different. Not because of his grace, but something else that he couldn’t quite figure out. Then he saw his surroundings. He was in a small twin bed, with a desk at the foot of it and a set of drawers on the wall across from him. Behind him was a window that let in a bit of the morning light. On the other side of the room Sam was just waking up, his furniture set up the same way. At least they were back together this time.
Sam sat up in his bed yawning and Gabriel got a better look at him. “Aww Sammy,” he said, turning to face him. “You look just like you did the day we met.”
Sam looked confused for a moment, but then his mouth dropped open when he saw Gabriel. “Oh my god Gabe.”
“What? Why are you looking at me like that?” asked Gabriel frantically. Was there something wrong with him?
“You- you’re freaking adorable!” Sam exclaimed, his eyes wide. He jumped out of his bed and rushed to Gabriel.
“Huh?” Sam had started pinching his cheeks, a look of delight on his face.
“Look in the mirror,” he laughed, releasing Gabriel.
He slowly stood up from the bed and walked to the mirror that was hanging on the wall. When he saw his reflection he gasped, reaching a hand up to run across his face. That couldn’t be possible- he was younger!
“This doesn’t make any sense! I don’t even have a real body, I made it,” Gabriel said. As far as he knew, Loki didn’t age either, he just always looked the same.
“Well, we couldn’t be in a college dorm room if we looked like we were in our thirties or forties,” he said, getting up to stand next to Gabriel. “I think I’m about nineteen or twenty, so you must be the same.”
“We’re in college?” he said, looking up at Sam. “Hmm, maybe that won’t be so bad, we can go to a couple of parties.”
Sam chuckled. “I don’t know, I wasn’t really the partying type,” he said, then look of horror came across his face. “Oh shit!”
“What is it?”
“I have a test!” he exclaimed, running back to his bed and grabbing a backpack.
“How do you know?” asked Gabriel as he watched Sam throw stuff inside the bag. They weren’t actually college students, they didn't have a class schedule to follow.
“I just do, okay! I gotta go, I’m gonna be late,” answered Sam, and he ran out of the room, still in his sleeping clothes.
Gabriel watched him leave in disbelief, then shrugged and climbed back into bed. If he had a class to go to, he could care less about it. It was too early in the morning to be up anyway. He fell back into a light sleep.
A little over an hour later, Gabriel woke up to a slightly sweaty and exhausted looking Sam entering the room.
“I gotta take a shower, got all gross running to the test,” he said, throwing his backpack down on the bed.
“Mmm-k,” yawned Gabriel, and rolled over in the bed. He heard Sam leave the room but couldn’t fall back asleep. Apparently he had reached his sleeping limit. Gabriel sat up, rubbing his eyes, then heard a buzzing noise coming from his desk. He crawled across the bed to reach the desk where he saw he had got a text on his phone. Oh, this was interesting- the message was from Dean. Gabriel sent a quick text back, then decided to do some research on this world.
Sam returned from his shower a few minutes later, and Gabriel looked up from his phone and froze. His wet hair framed his face perfectly, and all he wore was a towel wrapped around his waist, showing off those defined abs. Gabriel couldn’t take his eyes off of him.
Sam reached in a drawer to get his clothes, then turned to Gabriel. “Have you moved at all today?”
Gabriel quickly averted his eyes. “Uh, of course I have! What, you’d think I’d lay in bed all day?” he answered, a blush crawling up his face.
Sam raised an eyebrow at him, then broke out into a huge grin. “Are you shy, Gabe?”
Gabriel threw his arms up with a frustrated 'ugh'. “The longer this keeps happening, the easier it is to slip into whatever part we’re supposed to playing!” he shouted, then pointed a finger at Sam. “Look at you! You just ran off to take a test for no reason!”
“You have a point,” Sam sighed, then he grinned. ‘I’ll change in the bathroom then so you don’t have to worry about your hormones.”
“Shut up,” Gabriel groaned, falling back on his bed. Sam laughed as he went to change.
Twenty minutes later, Gabriel found himself sitting inside a dining hall with Sam for lunch. Sam had made a trip to the salad bar and returned with an impressive mound of greens on his plate, while Gabriel had opted for the dessert section. He chose a couple slices of cake along with multiple cookies for his meal.
“Oh, I forgot to tell you,” Gabriel said in between bites of cookie. “I’m in a band.”
“Really? How’d you figure that out?” Sam asked, curious.
“I got a text message from this world’s Dean while you were in the shower, reminding me to show up for practice before our gig tonight. Dean’s the lead singer and guitarist.”
“That’s interesting,” Sam commented, stabbing at his salad. “What do you play?”
“I play bass,” he said, then at seeing Sam’s raised eyebrows continued, “Chicks love bass players!”
Sam snorted. “Sure.”
“That’s not all though. The drummer? It’s Crowley. And Charlie plays the keyboard.” Gabriel knew Crowley- they had crossed paths a couple of times, but that was it. They were more acquaintances than anything. And Charlie he had only briefly seen in the apocalypse world- he had never met their Charlie. Band practice would be interesting.
“Ok, that’s weird,” Sam frowned. “Also, can you even play bass?”
“What do you take me for Sam? Of course I can! There’s not an instrument out there I can’t play,” Gabriel answered with his mouth full of cake.
“Of course,” said Sam, eyeing Gabriel’s mouth disapprovingly. He then looked down at his phone. “I gotta go to my afternoon classes soon.”
“Why are you going to class?” Gabriel asked, waving his fork around. “We’ll only be here for one day.”
“Why are you going to band practice?” he shot back.
“Touché. See you at the show tonight?”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Sam replied with a grin, then left the table, taking his empty salad plate with him.
Gabriel finished his lunch, then decided to go back to the dorm room. He told Sam that he could play bass, but he wanted to make sure he still had the skill. When he got to the room, he found the bass guitar and a small amplifier under his bed. Plugging it in, he gave a few experimental plucks on the string, then went straight into a bass line. It came to him easier than he thought it would. Tonight would be no problem. He messed around a bit, playing a few songs, until it was time to meet with the rest of the band.
They met at Crowley's apartment, and managed to practice one song before quitting to play videogames and drink beer. Gabriel found that he really enjoyed their company. This Dean was a lot like his Dean, only younger and less tired. Charlie was bright and funny, and Gabriel would have to seek her out if they got back to their world. And Crowley, he was quiet, but would chime in one a bit of sarcastic humor every once in a while that would get everyone rolling.
Partway through practice, Gabriel’s phone rang. “Hello, Sam,” he answered. “How was class?”
Dean rolled his eyes and Charlie winked at him.
“It was good,” came Sam’s voice through the phone. “Biology was actually really interesting. How’s band practice?”
“Awesome! Remember to come to the show tonight, alright? Six o’clock sharp at the Student Union.” Gabriel wasn’t sure why he was so concerned about Sam being at the concert. All he knew was that he had a feeling that he needed Sam to show up.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be there,” Sam assured.
They said their goodbyes, and Gabriel got back to “practice”. The rest went by in a flash, and it was finally time for the show. Gabriel didn’t even know what songs they were playing, but he figured he would get by just fine.
“You still wanna sing your song?” Dean asked Gabriel backstage.
He was singing a song? Well, there was nothing to lose. Gabriel wondered how Sam would react. “Of course!” he answered Dean, who gave him a thumbs up.
Then it was time. They ran out on stage to applause, not too much, but Gabriel figured it was more than average for a band playing at the Student Union. Gabriel searched the crowd and was relieved to find Sam watching them.
“Hello Stanford! We’re the Impalas! Are you ready to rock?” Dean yelled through the microphone. The crowd cheered, and the band started their first song.
They played mostly classic rock, which Gabriel should have expected. Thankfully they had a set list taped to the ground so he could see what the next song was. He found himself enjoying playing the bass and getting into the music. Every once in a while he would look at Sam, who also seemed to be enjoying himself, and would sing along with some songs.
“Alright, next Gabriel is gonna take over the mic,” Dean announced about five songs in. He switched places with Gabriel and gave him a smile, and Charlie whooped from the keyboard.
For some reason, Gabriel felt that this moment was important- really important. Like something he had been planning for months, even though he had only been here for a few hours. He stepped up to the microphone and caught Sam’s eyes in the crowd, winking at him. Sam laughed, and gave him a wave back.
Then he looked at the set list to see what exactly he was singing. Shit shit shit. Of course it would be that fucking song. He tried to see if he could get them to stop, but it was too late. Crowley counted them off, and Dean started the guitar riff. Gabriel had no choice but to sing.
I never meant to be so bad to you
One thing I said that I would never do
A look from you and I would fall from grace
And that would wipe this smile right from my face
Gabriel kept singing, but couldn’t bring himself to look at Sam. He knew that Sam hated that song, and he hated what he did to Sam. Hopefully Sam would understand that the song was a mistake. There was no way he would have sung if he knew what is was. The song ended, and the rest of the show went by smoothly, except for the apprehension Gabriel felt after singing.
“Great job everyone,” Dean said as they went backstage, slapping Gabriel on the back.
“Woo! We were awesome tonight!” exclaimed Charlie.
“Haha, yeah,” said Gabriel. Then he saw Sam walk into the room.
“Hey Sammy!” greeted Dean.
“Hi Dean,” he replied with a smile.
Charlie grabbed on to Dean’s arm, pulling him away. “We’re just gonna, get ready for the after party.” They left the room, Crowley following them out with a small wave, and Gabriel was left alone with Sam.
“Sam, I’m sorry,” said Gabriel, walking up to Sam.
“For what? That was amazing,” Sam replied with a chuckle.
“For the song,” he said, frowning.
Sam shook his head. “That? I don’t care Gabriel, I’ve already forgiven you, remember? Besides, I listened to the words, it’s ok.”
Gabriel let out a sigh of relief. “Thank you,” he said, and gave Sam a hug. Then he realized something, and pulled away.
Sam gave him a questioning look. “What?”
“I don’t know what’s happening Sam,” Gabriel started, trying to put what he was feeling into words. “Today, and when I saw you in the crowd, it's like- it’s like I’m falling for you all over again.”
Sam smiled softly. “And what’s wrong with that? Sounds pretty romantic to me.”
“No, that’s not it,” Gabriel said, his voice starting to become panicked. “Everyday we just, fall into these different roles. What if we forget who we are and lose ourselves in these worlds, becoming whatever character we’re supposed to be?”
“Gabe…” Sam’s smile faltered, but quickly returned. He took Gabriel’s face in his hands, rubbing his thumbs across his cheeks. “That’s not going to happen, ok? We won’t forget where we came from, I promise.”
Gabriel nodded, and Sam lowered his head to gently kiss him. Then the world faded into black around them.

maple spice maize?
maple - is there a hobby / skill that you’ve always wanted to try but never did?
yeah, you name it and i’ve probably wanted to do it and then haven’t, lol. mostly sports stuff. i really wanted to do archery when i was younger, and i was super interested in sailing at one point. hiking. rock climbing. physical and financial limitations had those off the table, though
(the rest under a cut because my next answer is LONG)
spice - have you ever encountered a house that you believed to be haunted?
two (and a half)!
half:
i used to hear really weird noises in the house i lived in my teens to early twenties. late at night there would be this strange, rhythmic thumping near the front door. it was loud enough to be jarring when it started up, and distracting when it continued. i mentioned it to my mom on more than one occasion and she constantly told me i was hallucinating it because i never slept (thanks). she and my dad were never able to hear it, but my brother also heard it. we eventually moved out, but never figured out what it was. i eventually came to feel like it was something taunting me.
i would also hear footsteps outside and see shadows moving near the windows at night. the house was only a few years old when we moved in, and no one had died there, but it was built on top of a fucking civil war battleground, which didn’t help my over-imaginative ass sleep at night.
one:
a long-abandoned mansion in my city. creepy old white building up on a hill, boarded up, siding falling off, just... dilapidated. you know the drill.
i never went inside (i’m a coward), but i went to look at it from the road with some friends, and just as one of them was saying that they felt weirdly compelled to go inside, we saw something moving upstairs. yet i still had to physically drag this friend back into the car. it was creepy as fuck.
apparently the building was built in the 1890′s and served as a home for unwed mothers, a polio treatment hospital, a sanitarium, and a nursing home. someone was trying to renovate it into apartments, and now it looks like it’s just a historical landmark, but i can’t really find any current information. it’s a creepy-ass building, though.
two:
a house that my family was going to look into buying when i was eleven. we were super excited about it initially, because it was in a decent neighborhood, it had a pool in the backyard, and it was three stories tall (not including the attic), none of which should have been in my family’s price range, but... it was! yay! not weird at all!
except for the roof it was a perfectly rectangular building. the houses around it were all different styles and shapes. the back and side yards were bigger than the rest of the properties surrounding it, so there was a lot of space between it and the other houses, but it was set too close to the street. it was also a story taller than the rest of the houses in the neighborhood. the siding was faded, kind of pink. it was just an old house, mostly normal looking, but the juxtaposition against everything else made it stand out severely and uncomfortably.
when we got there, i initially refused to get out of the car. my dad eventually forced me to go inside with everyone else, and the moment i went through the door, it felt like something was pressing down on my shoulders. i’d been in a lot of unoccupied homes around that time, but it was quiet in a way that wasn’t natural, even for an empty house.
everything was yellowing or rusting. there were rust stains in the carpet in the living room that were perfectly square, like metal appliances had been left there for a long time, but they weren’t the right sizes for that and they weren’t even near electrical outlets.
there were a lot of things like that, that just seemed really “off.” the guy who was showing us the house just kept brushing them off, saying it was a fixer upper, a lot of old houses were like this, and so on. my dad and my brother were fine with that explanation, and my mom was off-put (it obviously wasn’t true as we’d been in a lot of old houses recently and none of them had been this jarringly nasty), but the more we looked the heavier i felt.
we went into the kitchen - which was on the second floor, for some reason, which is not common where i live - and there was a huge, faded, reddish-brown stain on the wall. so, i was already freaking out about that, and then i suddenly realized that the door frames in the house were all weird proportions - too tall, too narrow. on top of that, aside from the doors to the outside of the building, none of the frames actually had doors in them. and, when i looked closer, i found, just...
fucking,
razor blades shoved into the top corners of the door frame. and the next door frame. and the next. there were razors shoved into the two top corners of every door frame in the building, on both sides of the wall, and this was not concerning for my father or our realtor.
i refused to go further into the house, and my dad refused to let me wait outside, so i stood next to the giant fucking murder stain with alarm bells screaming in my head until my family eventually returned to collect me. the moment we left the building, the oppressive feeling on my shoulders left.
my father attempted to talk my mother into buying the house. she laughed at him.
i don’t remember a lot of my childhood with any clarity, but i remember this incident almost perfectly down to the weather and what i was wearing (dense clouds, ratty hot pink sweatshirt that i continued wearing until i was 16).
for several years i would have dreams about this house that only consisted of an image of the outside of the building and occasional, unfamiliar voices demanding that i come back. i don’t remember the exact location of this house but if i ever somehow see it again i feel certain i’ll have a heart attack and die on the spot.
maize - share the weirdest encounter you’ve had with a stranger on the street.
i actually haven’t had a lot of these because i go out of my way to avoid both strangers and streets in public. recently i panicked at a crosswalk during stop and go traffic, and when i stepped back out of the crosswalk a very jovial man with a red beard drove through on the other side of the street, shook a finger at me, and shouted “don’t even think about iiiiiit!” which was amusing but still a little weird.

Ease Me [Draco Malfoy x Reader (x Harry Potter), Two]
Hello! I just wanted to make a quick note and say that I have made a playlist for this particular story linked here! It is on Spotify which isn't supported on the Safari browser. If you'd be interested, there are a collect few songs that I personally thought fit well with the story. Thank you!
Previous Chapter
Harry Potter was brave, for one thing. He wasn't the smartest, nor was he the most charming by far, but brave he was. And he swore, even after having to endure battle after battle because of one bloody scar, the worst battle was having to see (Name) cry. Truthfully, he didn't think it was downright possible if he was being honest with himself. Regardless, (Name) crying was still something he never wanted to see.  She was his friend that was always there to help others when they were down, and never seemed to need help herself...But he supposed one person could hold so much in before they broke down. No matter how much he told himself that, it was still unnatural to see (Name) cry.
"Man," (Name) sniffled, faking a laugh. "I'm pretty dumb, aren't I?" Her eyes were puffy and, well, to put it simply...She looked terrible. Even if Harry couldn't understand how (Name) could love a creature as vile as Draco, there was no doubt that they made each other happy. Besides, (Name) wasn't an idiot. She could judge someone's character effectively, so there must have been something about Draco that was redeeming.
"Don't... Don't say that. You know this isn't your fault." Harry was skilled at a lot, but comforting girls was not one of his best qualities. Especially if that girl was...well, (Name). Beautiful, intelligent, witty (Name). Perfect was an understatement when it came to her.
And... If Harry was being honest, when he first met the girl he found himself blushing around her more than anyone else. He found his heart pounding and his hands get clammy. It's not like he was in love with her or anything, but he definitely would've liked nothing more to be the one to hold her in his arms. Alas, Draco of all people was the one to capture her heart. So, Harry learned to cope with his feelings, and eventually they faded over time. However, as the boy stared at (Name), who was somehow still ethereal when she was sobbing, he couldn't recall how he ever got over those feelings. Putting his own thoughts away, Harry took a seat on the floor next to (Name).
"I know, Harry. I know. It's just—" She let out a frustrated cry, slamming her clenched fists on the concrete ground. "I can't believe him! Absolutely fucking insane, that's what he is! I never want to see that son of a bitch again!" Pent up anger got the best of her, and she ended up cursing in the hall. If someone heard, so be it. If a teacher heard, they'd get over it. She had a reason to be so furious. "I mean," she started, glossy eyes scanning the ground. "It wasn't like official or anything, but we were already set to... Y'know, get married and stuff."
"W...What?" Harry sputtered. Now this was a fact that he hadn't ever seen the light of. The more he thought about it though, the less surprise he became. The Malfoy family was all about formalities and keeping up their appearance, so no doubt that they'd choose a wedlock for their only child. (Name) was the perfect choice, too. She maintained an air of elegance around her, especially around people she knew would judge her harshly if she didn't, and could play the role of a perfect heiress in front of anyone. That's not who she really was of course, but she could still pretend. The Malfoy's obviously approved of her as it wasn't uncommon for (Name) to tag along on Draco's holidays and vice versa...But the thought of (Name) and Draco getting married punched Harry in the gut harder than he would like to admit.
"Yeah," (Name) sniffled, laughing bitterly. "Like I said, it wasn't official and he hadn't proposed to me...obviously. But our parents had this big, pompous, ball like party to discuss matters. I was aquatinted with his parents, and of course they already had his entire life planned out. My parents agreed, and had it been anyone else I would've said no. But it was Draco! I was fine with it, and by Merlin did I think he was fine with it too," she spat. Harry didn't respond for a moment, but instead just listened. Sighing deeply, (Name) collapsed and her head ended up on Harry's upper arm. She found comfort in her friend and the fact that, even though he really couldn't give advice to save his life, he could be there to listen to her problems.
The boy who lived was a fighter. He was brave, athletic, and honestly his luck wouldn't ever seem to dissipate. He could fight enemies left and right and still come out alive, but it seemed that his biggest weakness was the girl beside him.
.
.
.
(Name) was...In a sense, vacant. She showed up to class and the once enthusiastic girl was now quite monotone and quiet. She didn't participate in class unless she had to and instead of staying for a few minutes to talk to her friends, she simply left. While Draco didn't have any classes with her, Parkinson made sure that everyone knew that she in fact did.
"Pathetic, really. I mean, what kind of person lets one little breakup make them all mopey and gross?" she snorted, her pug like nose lifted in the air with pride. How would Parkinson feel if she knew that Draco was feeling the exact same way as the girl she was talking about?
"It would be in your best interest to just drop the topic, Parkinson," Draco spat. He couldn't stand her. He couldn't stand to look at her, to hear her, and he definitely couldn't stand to hear her talk about (Name) like she was any less of a goddess. "Touchy! What's wrong, Draco dear?"
'Dear'?
Was she out of her mind? Draco stood up from the dining table abruptly. He glared down at her. "You're delusional if you think that you and I are an item. And a word of advice, don't stick your dog's snout where it doesn't belong." Parkinson slapped a hand on her nose and avoided the icy gaze of Malfoy.
Draco, as he walked away, found himself unconsciously looking for (Name). He spotted her, and in turn it seemed that she had found herself looking for him as well. They made eye contact for a split second, and for a split second at the sight of her beauty, Draco forgot what he had done. (Name's) own glare reminded him of everything he tried to forget, the Slytherin boy unable to do anything but walk away.
.
.
.
(Name) found her nights to be filled with sighs and regrets. She understood fully what had happened was not her fault since, in essence, Draco was the one who had decided to fuck everything up and cheat. But...Sometimes she found herself doubtful. Sometimes she wondered if she wasn't pretty enough, or if she was annoying, or if she should've been a better girlfriend.
On those nights Harry Potter would find room in his schedule full of chaos to make time for her. He never hesitated to lend a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen to her grievances. Sometimes he would bring candies or snacks to hopefully soothe the pain a but, but sometimes he was simply bring his company and that was good enough for (Name).
Tonight, however, he brought snacks. It wasn't all that late at night, so students were mostly littering the common room or other areas in Hogwarts that he honestly didn't care much about. At then time, the only thing he cared about was seeing (Name). When he found her, she was sitting on the edge of her bed, head hung low. He made his presence known by knocking on the wall a bit. Immediately, her head shot up and a small smile found its way on (Name's) face.
"I um...I brought you these," he mumbled. Awkwardly, he held up a box of Berties Botts Beans and some Butter Toffee he had snagged from Honeydukes.
"Harry I swear you're going to give me a cavity, but thank you," (Name) joked, moving over a bit to give Harry room. He handed her the boxes and she went to open the beans, humming softly. She popped one in her mouth and smiled triumphantly. "Marshmallow. Okay, your turn."
"Oh, I really don't—" But Harry found himself unable to speak at the sight in front of him. The moonlight shone in the window, cascading a soft glow on (Name's) features. He sucked in a breath. She was as beautiful as she had ever been. Still, he complied as (Name) placed a bean in his hand, the boy putting it in his mouth before grimacing. "My rotten luck. Soap." (Name) let out a laugh, Harry finding himself laughing as well.
Compared to the other times that Harry would give her his company at night, (Name) seemed happier. Of course, she was still upset, but tonight she seemed to smile more and talk about mundane things rather than her heartbreak. The duo found themselves move from sitting on the bed to laying on the bed, much to Harry Potter's dismay. (Name) laid down and made enough room for Harry to lay down beside her. He gulped, adjusting his frames in a habit of nervousness. Shakily, he laid his form next to hers. (Name) was speaking—what about, he wasn't sure. He couldn't focus on what she said for the life of him because he was too focused on the girl beside him and how her side pressed into his, or how their hands were nearly touching.
"—Don't you think, Harry?" (Name) turned over on her side so that her face was facing Harry. He glanced at her, a lump in his throat. "Sorry, what was that?"
"Ha...You didn't hear anything? Man, you really know how to charm a girl, don't you?"
He wished.
Regardless, (Name) found herself in a small fit of laughter. Harry's own lips curled up softly at the sight of her—happy, as it should be. (Name's) laughs were shallow and short as she attempted to catch her breath. Harry could only gaze at her, struck in a daze and wondering to himself how one person could be so utterly perfect.
As she came down from her fit of laughter, it seemed that their faces had moved closer to each others. (Name) was no longer laughing, but instead staring into Harry's eyes. Pools of green, the colors so vibrant that even (Name) found herself getting lost in them in the dark. Harry's gaze flickered down to (Name's) lips, only for a second, but she still caught it. She felt her cheeks heat up.
"C....Can I...?" (Name) felt herself nodding. She felt it was rational. If someone had been there every night to soothe your heartbreak, to support you, to make you feel like you weren't alone...
Harry brought a hand up to her cheek before he moved his head forward, lips barely grazing hers. He barely pulled back before he felt (Name's) own hands, much smaller than his, he noted, pull him forward. He was shocked at first, but he didn't complain. Harry felt his eyes shut, lost in bliss. The kiss was awkward, much like a first kiss with someone should be, but it felt right.
And despite her doubts, (Name) couldn't help but think that it felt right as well.

Coffee
“You are possibly the worst barista ever.”
Liam tried to control the shaking in his hands as he reached up to grab a new bottle. The previous bottle in bits and pieces on the wet floor. “S-sorry it’ll be just a minute.”
It’s not like he wanted to work here, at this shitty drive thru box on the corner of this shitty trucker road. But he needed the money and it had a graveyard shift so he still had the mornings for school, so here he was; making shitty coffee for shitty guys like the one framed in the window right.
Even if this asshole was slightly…physically appealing. Except for the attitude. That was less appealing.
“Seriously, why are you even working here? Could they not find anyone else?”
Forcing himself to gently, gently, set the bottle of vanilla on the counter. Liam took a moment to close his eyes and mutter his mantra. Do not break bottles over customers heads. Do not grab their shirts and punch them in the face. Do not lose control. Do not. Do not.
“Dude…are you meditating?”
Except this motherfucker has been coming through the drive thru for the past two months. Every night at two am on the dot. Arrogant, sarcastic, and talkative. Liam couldn’t decide if the guy was socially awkward, lonely, or just a natural born asshole. Maybe all three. He opened his eyes and finished the ridiculous drink. Without dropping the bottle this time.
“Here. That’ll be three fifty.”
The guy eyes him for a moment, as if looking for something, before handing him a ten dollar bill, nods, and drives off before Liam could even think to offer the change. That was the one upside to the asshole coming every night. He was Liam’s main tip contributor. For whatever reason. At first he had thought the jerk had forgotten; driven off after some cutting remark that he had totally blanked on the change.
Liam had made sure to put it in a envelope labeled “Rude asshole.” Next night when he saw him, he had been surprised when the guy looked at the money, looked at Liam, and simply said “No man, that’s your tip.”
It probably is the only somewhat nice thing he had said.
Cleaning up the mess, Liam let his mind flint around. It was the third bottle he broke this week. Luckily his boss was easy going and never took Liam’s offer to pay for it. He always just said that it’s good that he cares and is trying. To keep up the good work.
It had been strange that the boss, Scott, hadn’t really interviewed him or tested his skills. He had simply asked if he could deal with all kinds of personalities (had he know about the rude guy before?) and if he was okay with long hours by himself. Liam was good with both.
After finishing up he sat on the stool at the small counter and worked on his current history homework. He didn’t really need to worry about any influx of customers. The most he had in a night was ten and that had been over eight hours. And most of them never tipped more than a dollar. Except for Rude guy.
Not that he blamed them; most only wanted the blackest coffee they had. Rude dude was the only one that asked for different things, and even then most of them were mostly absurd non coffee items.
“Are you capable of making an Italian soda? Yes? Are you sure? Then I’d like a watermelon one.”
“Can you make a white hot chocolate without breaking something? Yes? Then that’ll have to do.”
“Do you how to make a unicorn frap?”
He was pretty sure that last one was a joke but he had turned his back to the window (probably not the greatest idea but he would gladly take a knife to the back then admit to the punk that he had no idea what a unicorn frap was) to pull out his phone and google it real quick. It was an almost a relief to fake scan the shelves before turning back and saying, regretfully, they didn’t have all the stuff for that.
The dude look like he had been holding back a grin, instead of laughing though he just asked for an Italian soda. It was usually what he asked for when he wasn’t trying to piss Liam off. He did wonder why the guy came at two am every single day. He didn’t drive a long haul like the others, just a dark blue truck that looked a little beaten. Did he work somewhere nearby? Why the hell was he even thinking about it?
Shaking off all thoughts, Liam went back to studying.
….
“Do you work here every night?”
Liam attempted a small smile as he filled up the large cups for the trucker. This was a new guy, most of Liam’s customer were a routine bunch that alternated every week depending on how far they traveled. This one though, he wasn’t from around here because most just drive their trucks up to the window and shouted the order down and Liam would poke his upper body out to stretch the item up and take the money. This guy, he had parked a ways away and walked to the window.
Liam had been reading an assignment, humming absently, pencil tapping between underlining. He wasn’t sure how long the guy had been standing there, but when Liam started getting an uneasy feeling between his shoulders did he finally look up to see the fucker just standing there watching him.
It was embarrassing and unprofessional how loud he had swore, or how not-so-brave his jumping up and backwards had been but what the hell? The guy - blonde hair, blue eyes, and surprisingly not so…paunchy for a trucker - had simply grinned wide before asking if he could get two large black coffees.
Creeper. Liam’s creeper radar was definitely going off.
It happened sometimes. A guy would linger a little too long. A stare that was just a little off skelter. He wasn’t afraid of them, he could take care of himself just fine. Still weirded him out though.
The guy asked the question again, not taking the small polite smile as a hint. Liam inwardly grimace and opened his month to answer with a lie when a familiar beat up truck pulled up. Straight up to the window, making the guy back off several paces in a stumble of feet with a yelp.
The Rude asshole had arrived. Liam almost smiled in relief. No creep vibe there.
“What the hell do you think you are doing kid? You almost hit me!”
Rude ignored Creeper, instead turning to Liam and saying “Lets make the soda peach today.”
He rolled his eyes and muttered “In a minute.” before turning to finish what he was doing.
Liam could feel the hazel eyes sweeping over his body, saw him stare hard at the creeper from the corner of his vision as he finished with the two black coffees. Turning around he had to stretch out the window, practically on the truck with how close it was, to give the guy his two cups. He tried not to drop them when their hands touched while taking them.
“That’ll be six dollars.”
It was a weird exchange. Rude guy watching the trucker closely as he took out a ten. Liam leaning out the window at a somewhat painful angle, one arm on the rolled down window of the truck for balance, other arm reaching out for the bill. Creep stretching from the front fo the truck, coffees briefly set on the hood to get his wallet. Once he had the money Liam almost crashed back to the floor in relief. Getting up he hollered out the window.
“Hold on! I’ll get your change!”
There was a charged silence as he quickly counter out the one’s, hearing Rude guy mutter something scathingly out the window and creepy guy hissing a response. Then he was back out the window, this time a hand on the trucks door. He tried for an awkward professional smile.
“Have a good rest of the night.”
Creep stared into the truck before pocketing the money and giving Liam a rather too warm return grin.
“You too pretty boy.”
Then he was walking fast to his long haul, leaving Liam hovering out the window with a blank look. In the truck he could hear muffled giggling. Finally shaking himself, he dropped back into the box and looked into the truck. “Did…did he say pretty boy?”
The laughter wasn’t muffled anymore. Liam thought it was nice, not…so mean. He smiled reluctantly while turning to make the Italian soda.
“I think I saved you from being propositioned.”
Adding the whip cream (he always wanted an extreme amount of whip cream) Liam turned to hand him the drink.
“I guess I should say thanks?”
A brow quirked up but instead of a sarcastic remark Rude guy simply said “How about your number?”
Liam paused. Set the drink down. Paused again. Shook his head to clear it and said something that sounded like “Huh?” Rude guy gave him a grin that should have looked cocky but was missing just enough authenticity to make it stick.
“May I have your phone number?”
Furiously trying to get his brain to catch up, he said the first thing that came to his mind.
“I don’t even know your name.”
Rude guy tilted his head, the grin finally slipping away, hand leaving its tight grip on the steering wheel to stretch out across the space .
“Theo Raeken.”
Liam eyed the hand for a moment, watching it shake ever so slightly before reaching out to grip it tentatively.
“Liam Dunbar.”
A corner of Theo’s mouth curled up and it was like another out of body experience was happening. Before Liam could think of what he was actually thinking he was letting go and turning around to rip a piece of paper from his notebook. Grabbing a pen he scribbled down his number, and what the hell was happening, before turning to hold it out.
Fingers touched with a soft spark as Theo took the paper, a more genuine smile on his lips before Liam was holding out his hand again - this time with the drink. When the no-longer-unnamed-rude-guy looked up he smirked.
“That’ll be three fifty.”
