the far side of the world

i've made it via audiobook to book 10 of Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey / Stephen Maturin series and I initially read these books so long ago that time and again I'm like oh i definitely didn't read this one i don't remember it at all and then I stumble across something that I'm like ... oh, no i definitely read this one so like. well. i just can't tell. But i really do think I'd read these before, and I just was too young to fully understand some of the bits.

I'm making myself not look up spoilers for things so I can be surprised by them as they happen. But some of the things are just. Well. Anyway. I'll cut, so as not to discuss spoilers with anyone else who wanted not to be spoiled.

I was sort of sad, for this book, because Pullings had been promoted and thus wouldn't be in the ship anymore, more's the pity, but oh joy, he has come along as a volunteer! Won't Mowett, who is now first lieutenant after his departure, be jealous or feel slighted, Stephen asked, and Jack says why, anyone else would, but those two get along so well and have already worked it out between them, there will be no trouble among them. Stephen muses that they are polyandrous husbands, to be sure, married to the ship, and Jack needs the word defined and then is sort of gently skeeved-out at the entire notion of polyandry, despite his own imperfect command of monogamy.

This finally drove me to look at AO3 to see if there were any fanfiction specifically of this pairing, because I would completely read Mowett/Pullings/HMS Surprise, treated with any kind of gravity (and crack would also suit). Alas I found none, and distressingly little Pullings/Mowett either. In my mind I have dubbed them the Tubular Husbands, as Mowett is initially described as a "perfectly tubular young man" (I think the description is meant to hint that he is still slender with youth and has not really filled out into full adulthood yet, as I believe he is meant to be a teenager in that first book), and later Pullings is also described as somewhat tubular in form, I think in a musing by one of our principal characters that he has recently filled out and thus is no longer quite so caterpillar-like. Anyway I think Tubular Husbands is a perfect ship name for them and if I were in a fic-writing way at all currently, and not so taken up with my various ongoing shit, I would totally write it. High, excellent potential there.

But I digress. Well, not really, that's about all I had to talk about.

It's hard to quote snippets from an audiobook but the other night I was enamored enough of this passage to transcribe it. Stephen is speaking of Jack's wife, Sophie, who is a dear friend of Stephen's, he and she never having had the slightest romantic chemistry but understanding one another perfectly on a human level for many years.

"I desire you will not top it the Othello, brother, for shame? Stuff on you. If any man so far forgot himself as to make a licentious suggestion to Sophie, she would not understand him for a week. And then she would instantly lay him dead with your double-barreled fowling piece."

Everyone in these books is slightly autistic, to be sure.

Simon Vance is a great narrator, but any accent he does that is not English is just awful. His American accents are painful, and for an Italian woman he did the same bad French accent he does for every Frenchman. it is a shame, otherwise I do like his performance a great deal. Well, on 1.25x speed, otherwise the pauses for effect drag on too much. I do not need a languid cadence for a thirteen-hour piece, thanks much. But it's a delightful performance on 1.25x speed and I am enjoying it greatly, I just wish he had listened to like one Italian person speaking English before doing all the bits with Laura Fielding. Do you really think an Italian would pronounce it Lauxhra with that guttural French R? Meestehr Matuxhrîn! Non, I seenk not.

Anyhow I'm as far as the pacific ocean in book ten don't tell me what happens but do tell me your headcanons about the tubular husbands and just how dedicated they are to this undersized but sweet-sailing frigate.

I came because I wanted to congratulate you on what a good job you've done with your stories so far. When you started Dark Fate years ago, I was very impressed. I thought this story had every single characteristic that makes DL stand out, it had a little bit of everything. Then I found Infernum in wattpad, at that time I didn't know you were the author 😅. I was captivated, enchanted, even though there were only 5 chapters published. After that story, I realized how much you have upgraded yourself and how brave a step you are taking. In my eyes this fic was brutal, much more brutal than Dark Fate. From then on I kept thinking there was nowhere else to go and we were rewarded with Phantasmagoria. Well, I was already stumped. First chapter was so normal, starter, but alas. You've outdone yourself, I'm really convinced this is going to be the most brutal and… depraved of all your DL stories and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next between these two. Yeah, I wasn't expecting anything from this at first, but after the last chapter...I'm speechless. What a dynamic just 🔥

By the way I also read your jjk stories, I love them!!! You have a talent and a big one, their themes are so different, but you seem to get into the heads of the characters and see everything about them, I really don't know how you do it, so respect 🙇🏻

😶😶😶 Thank you so much. Tbh my knowledge of fanfics ended at those classic Ben 10 fanfics, and I hadn't ever written any fan works before 2020, back when I was 22. I like how my fics have turned out, even though they aren't perfect, but they're things that make me proud. I hadn't ever crossed 50k words in a single original fic before, and I did it first with Dark Fate. I'm proud of the yarns I've spun till today, and I'm so happy you guys love them as much as you do 🫶🥺 Thanks guys. You make me want to write even more.

literally all of them???? uhhhhh for jatp i've killed just about everyone but the most unmentionable ones are learn to live with the unimaginable (carlos) and i miss the days when (luke survives). for lockwood it's probs but the wolves came and went (and we're still standing) aka my torture fic. one of my personal favs is my flash fic, Betrayal (Or, how he finds out) ALSO ALMOST FORGOT i thought i was innocent (but there is blood all on my hands) for bright sessions!!

i do happen to have some fluff fics!!! you are alive. is one of my favs of my jatp ones, and what a glorious feeling (i'm happy again) for lockwood. also shoutout to i need you like water for my happy green boys kissing in the rain

Forgive me if this sounds rude it's not intended to, but are you ever going to finish any of your Troy fics? It seems like every time one starts to actually go somewhere you drop it and start a new one. 😟

i've cycled through a ton of emotions after getting that ask, from 'fair enough' to being hesitant/less excited about continuing writing…

Here's the thing. Writing, though a ton of fun, is also a ton of work. Maybe not for everyone, but I take on average about two hours for about 500 words (from first draft to edited publishable version - plotting not included). You can do the math yourself on how long it does take to get a story to the finishing line… Now add to that the ebb and flow of motivation and inspiration. My (and my coauthors) brains are wired in such a way that new things do give us quite a motivational boost (and also.. they make it difficult to get back to older things). We don't even post most story ideas we have! (you get maybe about 10%) But whenever a story really speaks to us/we can't stop thinking about it… well. We gotta write it. It's a surefire way to get it out of our system - and honestly, I am always excited to share a new version. I'd actually love to be able to share every version. Alas both my coauthor and I do have IRL responsibilities (and not too few…) which dramatically cuts into our writing time. And going from story idea to something publishable, even if it is just a summary type post takes quite some time… Then there's not only which story our brains are focusing on/we're excited about writing, there's also low effort and high effort stories and they need, as their names suggest, different amount of work put in. Sometimes, even though we'd like to continue EYK for example (I'd say this is our highest effort story), all we can do is something easy like 'Second Chances' (or 'you're the sin…') and so that is what gets continued. In the end it does mean we get some writing done (instead of not doing any writing) so we've been very happy with this system. Because whenever we do get writing done (esp. a chapter finished) we get a motivational boost too. I mean, listen. We know how every story ends. We know most of the beats we want to hit. The extra effort put in to get a story publishable is for the readers. And I know I'm repeating myself, but it is a lot of effort that gets into it. I routinely get discouraged because most stories are relatively slow in progression and I'd just love to be at a different point in time already. With our big ones (eyk and atm) we haven't even reached the midpoint yet! Yet we keep soldiering on (and no, we haven't dropped any story so far! (I mean, personally, I probably won't ever get to continue 'Kept', sadly. even though I also do know most of what happens there. But I'm also very open to discussing stories with readers, give a plot point or two away ;) )) Which brings me to my last point. A great way to make sure a story you like gets continued (not only speaking about my coauthor and I, just in general), is letting the author know. Know that you enjoy it, maybe even what you enjoy. And yes, I may have added things because a reader let me know what they like (this is by no means a guarantee! But a reader's excitement may feed into the authors (and vice versa)). I also have finished a chapter once that had been sitting around on my harddrive half-done for months, just because someone told me what they loved about the story and what they were curious about seeing, moving forward. Now this may sound like I'm begging for engagement but honestly. I will continue writing regardless. Because it is fun, even with all the hurdles I described. This is more me telling you what means you have in terms of steering authors. Because you do. May be more or less pronounced, depending on the individual author, but there's always a measure of it. Fanfiction isn't supposed to be a one-way street. It's a team sport.

Now about your actual question (which I may have already touched upon but I want to reiterate the point). I (we) plan on finishing all Troy-stories (except 'kept'. or well, maybe once we're done with every other story, i may come back to it. i still love ana and troy a lot. But guess I love troy with lee and ri more). They're all very dear to us, we love every iteration, every universe, and we also love to share them with others! And even though my first part of the answer may sound stern, I wanted you to know that I also got excited about recieving the ask - specifically about being let known that someone cares about our stories. Makes us both feel less like we're shouting into the void. Fanfiction is community, so I hope I haven't scared you off. Your question just tapped into something that's been on my mind for the past few weeks - maybe also because writing time has been even less than normal and so I took the opportunity to lay it all out. I (we) would still love it if you reached out again though.

This is gonna be a hot ass take, but don't post art to Ao3. It's not what Ao3 is for, and it's scummy to writers who put their work out there.

And I'm not talking about fics with artwork embedded, that's fine. I'm not even talking about comics, because those involve writing and if they're ongoing I can see why they could work there. I'm talking about people that make a 'work' on Ao3 that's just an embedded image (or a collection of embedded fanart) and nothing else, 0 word count.

Ao3 is the ONLY platform FOR writers. You physically can't post longfic on twitter (I mean maybe in a bazillion tweets, but really?) buttt you can post art on twitter all you want. You can post writing on other sites like tumblr, etc (deviantart? does anyone use it anymore? you shouldn't. anyway) but that's not really what people are LOOKING for on those platforms, and writers will ALWAYS be overshadowed by artists on those platforms because art is easier to consume faster, and anyone scrolling the tags there can scroll past art, appreciate it, like/reblog it in a second rather than taking the commitment to read something (that may take hours to consume) and THEN coming back to like/reblog it/otherwise interact with it.

That's kinda just the nature of writing vs art, and it is what it is.

But people come to Ao3 SPECIFICALLY for writing. It's the ONE platform (I mean barring older stuff like ff.net that's pretty much defunct) where people go specifically looking for writing to consume.

'Okay I get it Kai, but one person putting art on Ao3 doesn't hurt anyone or take away from the writers on there, they're all... there.'

Alas, it does.

In a much smaller fandom I wrote in, one of my more successful fics was on the first page of search results for that fandom when sorted by hits (which is the most popular way to sort 'em and really the only way older fics are found), up until a popular fan artist posted a work on Ao3 that was just a collection of embedded fanart pieces (that they'd already posted on twitter and had been seen there and were very popular) and that very quickly knocked my work off the first page of hits. So, my work was seen less because that artist just decided to repost to a platform primarily for writers. Yea, you're gonna bet that upset me.

'Kai you're just jealous their art was better than your writing'

'Kay not gonna deny it probably was. But their art had already been seen/was really popular on another platform that I, as a writer, didn't even have access to. Doesn't feel great for them to come into the writer's space and also then overshadow. Because again, art is easier to consume. it's always gonna be, that's the POINT of having a site like Ao3 where writers can shine. Fine fine, call me cranky for being bumped, but I wouldn't have cared at all if it were by another fic.

'You can sort out works with 0 words you know'

Yea, sure. Does everyone just visiting Ao3 know how to do that? And again, that's not the default. If you just click on the fandom without doing anything, it doesn't.

Now imagine you're not on the first page, and still had a work in that fandom and your work was on page 10 or whatever for that fandom (again it was a small one). You're now on page 11. Very few people have the patience to search that far back, and now you aren't been seen at all because you got bumped by a popular artist. This isn't something that happens on twitter or other platforms - everyone's bound by the silly algorithm / time on twitter, and time on tumblr. it's a LEVEL playing field. it isn't really on Ao3. Yes, there's sort by 'most recent' and that's all fair, but by hits, kudos etc isn't.

So yes, when those sort functions are taken into consideration, artists posting on Ao3 really do hurt writers, and take space away from them, make smaller writers less seen, etc. It sucks.

There's plenty of other places to post your art. I know, there's fewer places to post NSFW works now and get feedback on them (unfortunately) but Ao3 doesn't even host the images anyway... you have to upload them somewhere else! there are other options. Don't take space from writers because sites like tumblr aren't good for NSFW anymore.

Again this is gonna be a super hot take, but that's how I feel and I lose respect for artists real quick when they do this. No shade, I'm not trying to call anyone out, this isn't specifically directed at anyone, just something that I've seen repeatedly and has been milling around in my head for years now. Disagree if you like, but I'm not looking to get into fights in the rbs so.

Dreams Are Such Fragile Things. This story was written for my friend @wondrouswendy's birthday because she wanted angst. It shows a hidden scene after Trench and Darling broke up.

Love is a Gift, Never To Be Squandered. In this story Tess and Vanessa are together, but there are a lot of complications and past bias in the way. Communication can be a hard thing for some characters. In this stories ending everyone finally gets the have the conversation they should have had at the beginning.

I've been fortunate enough to not experience this. NO one should experience this.

9. Do you write smut?

I wish. Alas I do not have the skill.

When I'm writing, I try to think about the characters with realistic expectations in mind. I dislike reading a story that ruins my immersion so I try to keep that in mind when I'm writing my own stories to avoid that.

Writing. I have a hard time translating my thoughts to tangible words. I have great fleshed out ideas and can even verbally describe them. However when I sit down to write it all out, everything becomes difficult.

Like all things there is a time and place for it.

You're Listening To America Overnight. The America Overnight concept from Control was one of my favorite things in game. I find it fascinating to think about how the FBC has a radio show to both find and report altered items and AWEs from the unsuspecting public. The world building of this immediately pulled me in and inspired me to write my own scripts of these shows as well as creating my own Control OC who is the host of my version of America Overnight.

Script writing is different than writing a full story. I hadn't attempted it before AO but I've been enjoying these bite sized stories that really make you think, did that really happened?

Late Bloomer is one of my faves that I've written. More or less all of my kinks eventually lead back to the Rome that is breeding kink with me, and this one basically incorporates all of those. I'm a sucker for some good a/b/o, breeding, etc.,

Happy isn't really one of my better known fics (that I'm aware of, anyway), and if I was the type of person who was able to consistently work on long fics I could have made a good one with this concept but like..... lowkey the overarching summary vibe kinda works for me

All Good Things Same thing- not one of my more popular fics, but I love this one. It explores the dynamics of the cult vs hope county locals a bit, is soft with Jacob and Shiloh hedging around each other. I know most people are for the raunchy porn and I gladly deliver but sometimes I want my soft shit

Better Late Than Never Same as above, but Jacob deserves a nap and the family he always wanted. This man absolutely had aspirations of breaking the cycle and the way he continues to perpetuate it via the trials is something that I just cannot shake.

Quality Over Quantity This one was just unfettered filth. My thought process was "Jacob would probably have some weird breeding shit going on with the Chosen right???? He treats people like cattle there's no way this is where he draws the line." Low key could gone either way because I don't actually recall any female chosen in game so like..... either few female chosen being hunted by a gaggle of dudes or like....a hoard of women hand picked and sequestered away solely for- ANYWAY I'M A GODLESS WHORE

What You Want** This is a lesson in why I don't write multi-parters other than one shots and the occasional sequel (See: Late Bloomer). It took 3 (!!!!) years to write this shit lmfao Scratches the same itches as Late Bloomer but also has Jacob-esque mind fuckery directed @ the Deputy CC coded tbh, and just all around a darker vibe which I love.

Apex Predator** Re-reading back on the first chapter, I did a way better job on this than I felt when I initially published it. I still wanna work on this but alas 1) COD brainrot has me in a chokehold right now 2) Please refer back to how it took me 3 years to write a 3 part fic, and this is gonna be a big ol multichapter piece. Imma be working on this shit when they drop FC 10 LMAO. But God just all the ideas I've got for Jacob and CC? They're gonna drive each other insane.

10) Do you work on multiple wips or stick to one fic at a time? I thought I had already answered this but must have been for a previous ask meme. I've done a few of them lately and it's such fun, thanks for playing all.

Anyway! I actively work on just one. More live in my brain obviously but ping-ponging between projects just makes progress so glacial it gets really discouraging. So one at a time :)

17) Do you have a writing routine? I guess? I turn the PC on. Boot Plottr, open NovelPad. I get my planner and write down the scene I'm working on that day. I decide what my goal is for the day. Lately it's been more time-focused rather than goal. I have a horrible habit of not focusing if I say "do X number of words" and then I sit there forever being miserable. Much better to give myself a time limit, and whatever I get done is all I get for the day. I keep hoping it will teach me to spend my time more wisely but alas there are still days I procrastinate badly.

29) What’s something about your writing that you’re proud of? Already answered here :)

41) Who’s your favorite character you’ve written? Hmm. What I enjoy the most I think is when I can hear the character, and I feel like I captured their voice. That doesn't happen a lot. It has happened with Claudia (Warehouse 13), and I had it happen quite a bit in my Librarians/Sanctuary crossover. I think it helps if the characters have phrases they often use.

But favourite character to write just generally? You know I'm tempted to say Nikola. I went through a phase where I felt like I should tag every fic I was writing with "Nikola is a good friend" because it was just coming out that way. He's a snarky bastard who talks a good game but he doesn't fool me, he can bluster all he wants but I know how much he cares for his friends.

Although I have liked writing Eve in my Librarians fics.

Given my propensity for lengthy multi-chaptered I am surprised it's that low, but then I guess there are a fair few oneshots as well, and it is an average.

I'm bummed it's close to a million but not over it. Makes me wonder if I scrape my HD for all the prompt ficlets I never posted anywhere other than tumblr, or the fanfic I never finished/posted, if I would get there. I doubt it. I've probably got 20k or so but not nearly 60k. Sad.

I promise you I appreciate them so much ❤️

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Ooooooo….I wanna say either ‘Vessel’ or ‘Forgotten Visage’. Both have pretty harsh endings that only insulate that it leads to more pain later. ‘Vessel’ is just straight up a Soulsbourne boss style fight with all the tragedy of a Soulsbourne boss fight tied in, and ‘Forgotten Visage’ is just sad AU of what evil Balder was doing right after Rosa died…so yay, they don’t go anywhere sad. BUT IF I HAD TO CHOOSE….I’m gonna throw it at Vessel lol

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Idk if I’m gonna get some hate from certain oomfs from this, but I’m gonna say ‘Down By The Red Poppies’ has one of the happiest BECAUSE of everything that had happened to all the characters throughout the fic (And even the first fic!) and making it in the end. There was def a lot of hurt and pain and angst throughout Lobelia and Poppies, but I think the ending the fic made it all the worthwhile and despite the pain/tragedy, it’s gonna be okay 🥲

8. Do you get hate on fics?

No, not really. Not that I’ve ever seen!

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I have written smut ONCE!...It was the last half of one chapter out of a 117,000 word fic…HAVE I ATTEMPTED TO WRITE MORE SMUT SINCE, YES AND I AM NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO FINISH IT YET!! The smut in Red Poppies was my first ever smut and it was, like, tender and sweet?? But the Balrosa smut that I have a low simmer is def meant to embarrass that fucking twink lol

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I haven’t, and don’t plan to!! Not my thing, to read or write.

Ohhhhhh hohohho hahaahah AHAHAHAHAAHAHAA!!! There’s so many lmao I have so many that are stuffed in folders and forgotten about. There’s a few multi-chapter ideas I wanted to try and do, but with Witch of Causality going on rn (and going on for awhile now) I doubt I’ll ever start them for long long time… (Chinese BayoJeanne AU fic based off of Causality, etc).

But if there is a KING of unfinished WIPS…it’s my now long forgotten Godzilla Final Wars fics from years prior. Sucks because I got to fic 3 out of the trilogy, but I’m just not in it anymore…wish I had the willpower to finish it, but alas, never will.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Lots of my oomfs say all my fight scenes actually ‘feel’ like what Bayonetta fights, so I wanna say I write fight scenes pretty well!! I would say characterization, but I’m only comfortable with a few, not all…

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

looks at long list of comments and notes from my beta reader for the the insane amount of grammatical errors, structure errors, and sentences that just make no sense uhhh….so yeah, I kinda fuck up the actual writing aspect a lot asdjkasdsda

But seriously, I think sometimes (at least for recent, larger fics), I’ve had to pull back on the amount of filler that’s not necessary or structure of a chapter to make it actually make sense…(THANK YOU KELS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT, YOU KEEP SAVING MY ASS!!)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I think if you’re not super well-versed in the language, definitely consult or check with someone who knows!! Or do a bit of digging, especially if you plan on using quite a bit of it!

19. First fandom you wrote for?

GODZILLA!!! Funny enough, I have literally only ever written fics for the Godzilla fandom and Bayonetta fandom. I have read quite a bit for other fandoms, but Godzilla is my dear yee ol faithful!! (Funny enough, it’s specifically only for Godzilla Final Wars as well lol)

20. Favorite fic you've ever written?

This one is actually hard…hmmm…It would have to be a tie between Lobelia/Red Poppies. I kinda put them in the same box, even tho they are 2 different fics. Honestly, it was just so fun coming in blind to a new fandom and just slapping together whatever I wanted to do because I really wanted to tell the story and had fun with it. I don’t even think it’s my best stuff, but damn nothing beats crashing into the Bayo fic community with a fic that just (spoilers) kills little Cereza in her own story and I have no regrets ASKJDSADHASDHA

well uhhh uhhh i did not meet a single one of my december goals. so that's....not great! i had really hoped to finish my ya sci-fi book rewrites by end of the year but alas, i still have 9 chapters left *sob* (i thought i only had 7 but recently realized i need to add two more chapters. cool. cool cool cool coolcoolcool.) but it's fine!! it's fine!!! i rewrote about 14k of my book in december and i'm finally entering the final arc so AAAAA. IT'S HAPPENING.

that is still gonna be my main priority for january (rewriting my book, that is). i'm hoping i will FINALLY finish but then again i've said that for like the last six months so we'll see lmfao. and if i DO finish rewrites, hoping i can delve into line edits woooo!!!

i'm hoping to also start doing a bit of querying prep this month (*screams internally*) by which i mean i just wanna at least start refining my query package—i technically have one already that i used to apply to mentorships and whatnot, but it's badly outdated now so uhh need to fix that! i had told myself i'd start querying by end of this month (even if it's just like, sending out One Query for the heck of it). not feeling like that's very likely but... who knows!

but also....i've been so burnt out on my book lately, i really just wanna write at least SOME fanfic this month. i want to write things for fun again, i miss it. :(

*scratches head* well uhhh damn i did not really...do anything i wanted to get done this year.... LMFAO. and even the few things i checked off are things i like barely worked on/started. so, ouch 😅

in my defense... i did not foresee how much work i'd have to do with my book revisions this year. at the beginning of the year i thought i was going into line edits—but around april i realized i needed to do a full rewrite. so i essentially had to start over, and rewrote *checks notes* roughly 83k of it so!! as you can imagine...that was rather time consuming and i did not have much time to work on anything else.

but... i'm trying to look on the bright side: the reason i started over is because of how much i've learned about writing from my mentors and my critique group etc. and looking at my draft from last year vs. this year, i can see a huge improvement! there is still a lot of work to do on this book—but i do feel like in 2023, i fell more in love with the story and characters than ever before (like to the point where i essentially have brain rot for my own ocs... LOL). and i feel like after 2.5 years of hard work, i am starting to see the "real book" starting to emerge from the chaotic mess it was before. so, that's very exciting!!

which brings me to: i'm hoping to maybe....MAYBE...dip my feet into the querying trenches in 2024. i had kinda hoped to do this by end of 2023 but...once again i grossly overestimated how ready my book was at the beginning of the year lololol. but i do feel like once i finish this big rewrite, i'll have less structural/overarching things to fix and more scene-level and line-level edits which (fingers crossed) hopefully will not be quite as involved as, yaknow, rewriting my entire book word by word! SOOO i may be sorta sending out the occasional query as i work on line edit-y stuff (esp bc querying is so slow nowadays haha) so yeahhh haha *sweats profusely*

there are a few other original projects i hope to make progress on this year. firstly, i'd love to continue working on my first draft of my adult fantasy arctic monster wip (maybe...finish a draft? i kinda doubt it but maybe!!). i also hope to keep working on planning a couple other projects, including planning sapphic princess/pirate wip and space western dads wip—both of which i'm very excited about. :)

AAAAND I WANT TO WRITE FIC AGAIN!!!! i really neglected my fic writing in 2023 and i miss it terribly. 😭 i have a lot of wips i want to continue/finish—but i think main priorities will be editing/publishing the last chapter of sylvix dreamscape fic, trying to finish posting at least one of my other ongoing multichapter fics, working more on sylvix pacrim au, aaaand... finishing a draft of one of my other wips perhaps? i don't know, i'm trying to be gentler with myself since i think i had too many specific goals for 2023 and could not meet any of them haha. sooo re: fic writing the general goal is "just have fun and see what happens."

so its kind of a weird situation because i post almost all of my writings in a private friend group (which you obviously know but others may not) so i guess its kinda cheating to share what i've posted there?

so i guess i'll share this snippet of a WIP that i'm writing currently

but since i think you're the only person who follows me (that actively uses tumblr) that's from our friendgroup server. i'll share this little bit too from a fic i posted there. just for the folks are aren't in the server

Ophelia once again sat on the sidelines of another noble's ballroom party. The entire fortemps family invited, but conveniently they forgot to send an invitation to the girlfriend of the only daughter born to the fortemps name. And to boot, its invitation only, no plus ones. If you aren’t on the list or have an invitation. You aren’t getting in The bigger shame was this was one of the few times ophelia had actually dressed for the occasion. A black vest with a white shirt underneath with a pale blue tie. And a matching coat with black fur She wanted to actually show ysayle she could dance, not just simple waltz moves. But more complex intricate couples dances too… She may have received some training as payment many years ago for helping out around the ala mhigan refugee camp But alas. At the door ysayle was rejected, and once more ysayle had to stop ophelia from flying into a rage. The fortemps brothers and edmont had tried to cheer her up after and even talk to the venue holder behind her back. But the answer was simply no. Ysayle wasn’t getting in no matter how hard they pleaded… Or warned And of course. A beautiful woman well dressed and alone, led to many single noblemen trying to court her. Even a few noblewomen tried it. But the response was always the same. She had a girlfriend. And wasn’t willing to dance with anyone but her (much to emmanellains dismay too) “May I have this dance?” A voice checked ophelia back into reality She looked up and saw a well dressed elezen, the perfect mental image of a nobleman. Silky fabrics, expensive clothing, and a snake's smile. She had just about had enough of it today “The only dance i’d have with you is the one where i’m running a blade through your heart”

Which of your fics would you keep the basic plot of but rewrite completely?

Not to break anyone's heart but I would probably rewrite I Would Go Blind. When I wrote it, it was supposed to be a one off one shot and has since turned into a little series / universe situation. When I was working on Rid Me of the Blues I felt a little trapped having to follow along with the timeline and lore that had been established in it. For example, Fictional!Matty probably wouldn't have ended up in A&E for drug related reasons so many times... when I was working on Rid Me of the Blues it felt really repetitive, but alas I a had to follow what had already been established for continuities sake.

2. Anything that you'd like to write but feel like you're unable to?

I'm going to get yelled at for this one too, but honestly I wish I was more confident in my smut writing and that I could just write a super filthy fic without feeling like it was the most cliche, cringe thing ever 😂 Because despite my best efforts, I still feel like my smut is cringe. Maybe one day!

10. Top three favourite fic tropes.

Aw man only picking three?! I love omegaverse (shocker) there is just something about the power dynamic, and also the way that every author has their own interpretation of the concept that I really enjoy. Fake Dating just... makes me really happy and smiley because we KNOW that they're going to end up together. And lastly, I know it probably doesn't really count as a trope more of a theme but I'm counting it anyway: angst. I love angst, and pain, and suffering and misery and then finally making it to the happy other side.

Ask game: a BNHA wrist soulmate AU where you have the name of someone you will kill on one wrist and the name of the one who will kill you on the other, please. ^^

the Implications....................

1- You don't want a soulmate, here. because that means you're going to kill someone, get killed, or both. But alas, some people are not so lucky. Izuku's got a name on one of his wrists- Shigaraki Hajime, and everyone he knows is sure he's going to get killed in a quirkless hatecrime. Inko is constantly terrified. His dad vanished as soon as he saw it in the hospital. Izuku still wants to be a hero. He hopes to make his life mean something, and maybe even his death, that way.

2- Izuku later assumes The Sludge Villian is Shigaraki Hajime, until All Might saves his life. He mentions this in a daze- "oh, i guess he's not shigaraki hajime after all. I still have time."- and All Might freezes. Because he's got the same name on his write. Because Nana had that same name on her wrist. Because that's AfO's real name, and he killed Nana, and All Might killed him. This kid shouldn't even know that name, let alone reluctantly show him on his wrist when he asks.

3- Stain has just straight up been killing whatever name he sees on his wrist and assuming its because they're unworthy. the paradoxical concern for this is not something he worries about. he spares anyone not on his list, including Iida Tensei.

4- Chisaki had names on his wrists. So did Eri. Those names were removed via Overhaul before Pops could ever see them.

5- AfO didn't even have to do a lot of work to find Tenko. All it took was hearing about the child born with his parents, grandparents, and sister's name on his wrist, immediately placed in state custody. After that, finding a boy with so many "shimuras" on one wrist was easy, and he was already angry to be abandoned and mistreated in a group home. The day he met his bio family was the day he died.

As much as I love "a letter from my friend John" we technically aren't at the point where we're reading letters by characters yet- we're reading his diary.

I am sneaking along in my good friend Jonathon's luggage but it's hard to hear anything from inside the suitcase, so I read his diary after he goes to sleep for the day. He doesn't know I'm here so I obviously can't respond or say anything to him. But I'm so glad to be out of that case in the stuffy carriage, I hope I get a chance to look around Dracula's cool castle later

WIP Update

Hi, between work and uni, I haven't been able to write a lot lately, which sucks, but I graduate in about a month (!!) which means that starting about midway through December, I'll have way more free time and creative motivation to get fics out. In the meantime, here's a rundown of all the wips I've got going through my head that will hopefully get updates/see the light of day soon (warning for nsfw fics)

I'm over a month late and only on day 10, so least to say, she's my highest priority. Currently I'm working on day 11: oviposition, and it's almost done, so that should hopefully get out this week! If you're not into that, day 12 is a cute Padme and Luke fluff, so you can look forward to that one instead.

Higher on the Streets

This is a podracer!Anakin and kind of sugar daddy senator!Obi-Wan fic that currently only has one chapter published several months ago, but rest assured, it haunts me every single day. It's not abandoned! But this was my venture into trying to write a multichap where I post chapters as I write them instead of once the fic is complete, and as it turns out, my brain doesn't like working like that. The second chapter is in progress, though it's kinda low on my priority list.

This is my favorite of my posted wips, and I'm already several thousand words into a part two, I just have to have the time to really dedicate myself to writing it, because if you've read my smut fics before, you know they're obscenely long. I really did omegaverse week dirty huh, I said over a year ago that I would turn this one shot into a fic, and I got so many comments asking me to do just that. And Yet. It'll happen. I swear it'll happen. I mainly just need to get my thoughts together for it.

I, like all the other obikins, watched that angels and demons movie and felt things. Alas, I don't know enough about catholicism to write a priest kink, so I had to improvise. I give you: southern baptist preacher's son Obi-Wan is asked to be a good influence on local bad boy Anakin, who's fallen away from christ in pursuit of tattoos, piercings, alcohol, and *gasp* homosexuality.

TA!Anakin who's in love with professor!Obi-Wan. In order to try to get over his feelings, he joins a BDSM discord server where he meets Mod Ben. Possibly trans!Anakin? Still thinking about that one.

Master!Anakin agrees to take on padawan!Obi-Wan as his apprentice after Obi-Wan's master, Maul, is deemed unfit for duty in the aftermath of the Clone Wars. Obi-Wan has some strange habits, however. He only speaks when spoken to, doesn't keep any personal possessions, and has cast off all the friends he'd made when he was a youngling. At first, Anakin puts it down to the stresses of going into the Clone Wars too young and being reassigned to a new master, but as time goes on, Anakin starts to question what really happened to Obi-Wan when he was with Maul.

This is probably my favorite one here, but it's a newer idea, so I'm still working through the planning process to make sure that everything works out the way I want it to. More likely than not, it'll actually probably be platonic Obi-Wan & Anakin rather than shipping just because of the nature of everything.

My newest idea, as is apparent by the lack of title, so I don't completely have a summary yet? But it's modern/magic au, definitely a darkfic, lots of whump for obikin especially but also everyone else they drag into their problems.

Those are my wips! I greatly anticipate the day that I can write about things that aren't ancient scandinavian poetry and the effectiveness of college entrance exams. If you've gotten this far, asks about wips or any of my other fics are always welcome <3
