WHOS READY FOR SOME CENTENNIALS!!!!!! unasked for explanations below once again

This set of designs is different from Ryan's because i basically just traced my old sketches and redid them digitally to give them colour so there are less design details (sorry lmao)

ANYWAY continuing with the "time-accurate" clothing choices, I'm hoping it's more obvious with loey and neas this time. You have no idea how RELIEVED i felt when i saw neas' third overhaul was in the 2000s. I love details but I have been working with suits for like 30 designs by now.

Because I did these back in october I don't really have proper ref images but if you googled men's fashion for each of their respective eras you should get pretty good results and if you don't im sorry💀

Not sure if it's obvious but they're supposed to "age" with every overhaul, yea im aware my ability to draw people older than 40 is nonexistent-

On that note, I have a more in-depth hc for how the "human" of an engine appears which would explain how loey and neas can "age" but the short version is the "human" is a combination of the maturity of an engine's mentality and the engine's actual age

I do not know enough of the Skarloey Railway lore to back my headcanons but I hc that during their early days, the SR was more strict with appearances, hence the suit jackets and whatnot (kinda like how RWS SR engines all have the same livery)

Towards the SR's later days, the change of directorship and the increasing diversity of their rolling stock led to much more relaxed regulations on appearances. The jackets that the overhaul 2 designs are holding would look similar to the jacket that overhaul 1 loey is wearing, which would bear the engine's nametag and the signature red shoulder pad designating an engine's gauge

Also the nametag and specifically the number badge were details added later when I finished my handel and petah designs, yes I love it a lot that's why i mentioend it.

Overhaul 1 neas is particularly different from overhaul 1 loey because for one they're two different decades, but also the time between his first and second overhaul was when neas had to run the line on his own (not to mention the world war woah...)

I haven't really figured out specific height hcs yet but neas and loey are around the same height as each other but grow a tad with each overhaul

Got my new NaNoWriMo project set up and going and Whumptober is completed! I will likely not post much over November on here, although I have a couple things planned. I may also be easing away from posting writing on Tumblr in general, so don't be surprised if that happens.

I do have some WIPs I want to finish for here, might do some ask games and some other stuff, but I may be pulling back. I have been thinking about it for a few months and it might be time to just like. Exist here, without feeling the need to post anything in particular. At least through the end of the year. Kind of a low-key hiatus.

You know, you have the Whorf hypothesis, which talks about how language might effect how we think

I believe one of the things he (or someone else saying similar things) brought up was the idea that:

If we for instance have barrels which used to contain a toxic chemical that's now empty, but the barrel is still dangerous, does lacking a word for "empty but dangerous" influence how we think about or treat this barrel? Would someone be less cautious around it for instance because "empty" implies to an extent that the barrel is back to how it was before it was filled?

Anyway, this is just me establishing a concept here

My thought here is if poorly fitting words may disproportionately warp people's understanding of concepts

I wonder if by using phrases like "artificial intelligence" we don't meaningfully skew perception of "ai" programs towards a thinking program, even among people who have some understanding of how it works (basically rapidly running a number of calculations until it gets an answer it thinks will be good, it's similar to those "having a simulated bird learn to walk" things you'll see, just very fast)

How much do we end up having certain terms basically become poison pills because of how ubiquitous they've become while being almost totally wrong

I'm not even really talking about things like reasonable terms used wrong, like people saying "gaslighting" when they mean "lying"

It really is specifically with terms like "ai" where... well... where I'm afraid we may have done irrevocable damage to public understanding of something, and where... I don't know that there's a way to ever fix it and shift the language used

thank you!! hopefully i shall get something up for it in the next couple days, just currently facing the inner brain plankton (i didn't think i'd get this far...) and turns out posting a fic you've been sitting on for three and a half years is a tricky thing to do (especially when you are. one week out from performing in an original musical you wrote and your soup brain did not inform you of this when you made the post bc it is made of soup)

but it is much appreciated and i look forward to having the time to see how much further i can go with this plot :D

I’m so glad people are excited for my silly little big bang idea. I’ve been sitting on it for a while, I honestly wasn’t even sure I’d ever end up doing it, but seeing how some people have said that they don’t usually do these types of events but signed up just so they could write in their native language. I’m not gonna lie it did bring me to tears.

I’ve been wanting to write more fics in Spanish for a while, even beyond just translating my own fics, and seeing that so many people are excited for the same thing I am is just. it makes me happy.
