HI! i love your writing and i was wondering if you would do a grid reacts to us finding out we were a bet? And if you wouldn't mind adding Logan too?
Thanks ml xxxx
the grid reacts: you find out you're a bet!
Tumblr media
Featuring: Oscar Piastri, Logan Sargeant, Daniel Riccardo, George Russell, Alex Albon, Charles LeClerc, Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Lando Norris
thank you for requesting! xxxx
-----------------
Oscar Piastri:
He walked into your shared apartment, a smile on his face. He hadn’t seen you in a week, and you’d both been too busy to call or text too much, so finally, he’d be back with his girl.
He wasn’t expecting the bare apartment he’d known so well before you’d moved in. He wasn’t expecting your things to be gone, or the note on the table, or your engagement ring beside it.
Dear Oscar,
I found out. I know we were a bet, and I know you’d try to convince me that you loved me, and that it was all real. I don’t doubt that it was real. I know I loved you, and I felt the love from you (either that, or you’re a brilliant actor and picked the wrong profession). But I feel betrayed. I wish you would’ve just come to me immediately and told me how we started, even if I was mad at you for a while. You kept a huge secret for 2 years, Oscar. That’s not a short amount of time. I love you, and I still love you, but I need some time on my own to figure stuff out. I moved back out into my old apartment, and don’t worry, I’m still your girlfriend, but I just wanted space to think. We’ll work our way back up to being fiancé’s but until then, I am still very much yours, unless you don’t want me to be. I need to trust you again.
Love, Y/n.
His heart sank. He knew it was stupid to try and keep it a secret, and it had truly been tearing him apart for the last 2 years, but this… this was too much. He was thankful that you two at least we’re breaking up. But the engagement reversal thing was fucking with him. He adored you. He loved you. Yes, it was stupid, but he did stupid stuff all the time. Forgetting his keys, sleeping through his alarm, wearing his shirt inside out. You always told him it was endearing.
“Hey,” your voice brought him out of his trance. “I wanted to be here when you came back, sorry, there was traffic.”
He turned around to see you. You looked at him. He was crying.
“I’m so sorry,” his voice broke as you nodded.
“I know you are,” you stepped closer to him, wrapping your arms around his neck. “We’ll get through this, yeah?”
He nodded, burying his head in the crook of your neck. You let him cry it out for a little while, then pulled away.
“You’ll be ok, we’ll be ok, yeah?”
He sniffled. “Yeah.”
“I love you,” you reminded him, wiping away tears as you went along.
“I love you so much, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I just… I was so scared a-and-”
“I understand,” you nodded. “But that doesn’t mean I forgive you.”
He nodded, playing with your engagement ring in his hands. He broke again, sobbing. You wrapped your arms around him again, letting him calm himself down. “Please put it back on,” he whispered, begging you.
You thought about it for a moment. You loved Oscar, and you knew you’d forgive him. It was harder not to forgive him, in all honesty. You’d read his hundreds of drafts of the speeches he had planned to say to you. Lando had shown them to you when he told you. You knew how this had been tearing him apart. But you knew how it stung, being betrayed like this.
“Ok,” you nodded. He slipped the ring back onto your finger and a weight was lifted off of his chest, while one was placed onto yours.
God, maybe love did conquer all. And that idea fucking terrified you.
-----------------
Logan Sargeant:
“Go up to her, she’s a McLaren engineer,” Lewis’s friend’s voice rang out over the speaker of your phone. “I’ll give you 2 grand if you can fuck her tonight.”
“It’s not like I need the money,” Logan smirked, cocky as ever. “But I’ll take that.”
The camera panned to Logan walking up to you, and your world shattered.
------
“Hey babe,” he called, walking into the apartment. There you were sitting, seething on the couch. “How was your weekend?”
“Great,” you answered shortly. “Have you looked at social media recently?”
“No, why?” he asked, resting his hands on your waist. He tried not to read into your stiff posture. Was this the moment? Had you really found out?
“I was a bet,” you sighed, brushing his hands off of you. “And you didn’t even have the heart to tell me.”
You hadn’t planned on crying, you thought you’d scream at him, give him a piece of your mind, but it was hard to get angry when he was standing there, looking so helpless. You loved him, and all you’d ever been to him was a bet. You’d only met a year ago, started dating 6 months ago. You’d meant nothing the entire time. Just a fuck and a check. You just felt… defeated, and used.
“Baby please, let me explain, it’s not what-” He started but you sighed.
“Explain what? That you ‘love’ me? I don’t care. I deserve someone who tells me the truth, and you couldn’t even do that. I had to find out with the rest of the world. Don’t you realise how stupid I look? All the posts I made, everything I told my friends and family, and the entire time it’s all been a lie? I look like a fucking idiot.”
Logan looked down, ashamed. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered, taking your hand. “I’ll do anything to make this right, please Y/n, I love you.”
“How am I supposed to trust you? And how am I going to look going back to you? Why did you fuck this all up?” You groaned in frustration. “I fucking loved you!”
“I love you too!” he pleaded. “Please let me make this right, I don’t care about the media, or whatever, I care about you, and I care about us.”
“What ‘us’? We’ve been based on a lie this entire time!”
“Please don’t say that,” he was crying now, so were you. “Please don’t say it was a lie.”
You took your hand from his. “Logan, we’re done. Please don’t contact me.”
And that was that. He broke your heart and you broke his.
-----------------
Daniel Riccardo:
He watched in horror as you opened the message on his phone from Scotty.
“You have to tell her. This isn’t right anymore Dan.”
“What is Scott talking about?” You chuckled.
“Nothing,” Daniel smiled, but it looked forced.
“Dan, come on, you can tell me,” you smiled sweetly.
“Seriously, I have no clue what he’s talking about,” he nervously chuckled.
Your face dropped into an angry frown. “So he was right, you wouldn’t even admit it if I gave you the chance,” you sighed. “That’s great, thanks Daniel.”
“What do you mean?”
“I know about the bet,” you sighed. “Scotty told me last week.”
Daniel sighed. “I’m sorry.”
“Me too,” you turned to him. “Why would you lie?”
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
“Of losing you,” he shrugged. “I thought it would just be better to… keep you in the dark I guess. I wasn’t really thinking straight.”
“I wish you would’ve just told me,” you sighed, looking up at him.
You were both silent for a moment.
“What does this mean for us?” he asked.
“What ‘us’? We were based on a lie Daniel. A lie you told for a whole year.”
“So that’s it?” he gritted out.
“That’s it.”
-----------------
George Russell:
“Have you talked to her about it yet?” Alex asked. “You have to tell her mate, it’s gone on too long.”
“It’s been 6 months Alex, and, by the way, I actually love her,” he scoffed. “I’m trying to figure out the best way to explain it.”
“Explain what? That you were dared to ask her out for money? Mate, you sound like a dick no matter what, she’ll break up with you no matter what,” Alex sighed, disappointed in his friend.
“She’s probably right to,” George admitted. “Fuck!” he groaned.
You stepped into the room, trying to pretend that everything was alright. Both of the men looked up, terrified of what came next.
“Please let me explain,” George rushed out, taking your hand. Alex quickly left you two to speak alone, patting you on the back as he left. George stood up and took your hand.
You nodded. “Explain.”
George’s frown lifted slightly, elated that you would even give him the chance to explain. “It was a stupid bet and I never took any money. I stopped speaking to the guys after we met, and I promise I’ve been trying to tell you, I just… I get scared every time that I’ll lose you. I don’t deserve you, but I love you Y/n. And I’m so sorry.”
You nodded. “I just… give me some time, yeah?”
He nodded. “All the time you need, of course.”
You took a deep breath, wrapping your arms around his neck in a short hug. “I’ll call you, yeah?”
He nodded, letting himself enjoy your embrace. “Please call me. Anytime.”
You pulled back, still holding back your tears somehow. “Yeah. Good luck today.”
“If I win, it’ll be for you. It’s always for you,” he smiled softly.
“Yeah,” you sighed, leaving with a broken heart, and a choice to make.
-----------------
Alex Albon:
“Can we talk?” Alex asked, 2 months in.
“About what?” you questioned. You were sitting in his apartment in Monaco, eating dinner before catching a movie at a nearby cinema.
“How we met.”
“Proceed,” you nodded, turning your full attention to him.
“We met at Jimmy’s, and I was there with my friends, and we were being assholes, and I'm sorry that’s how you met me,” he hesitated. “And that night, I was dared to go up to you, only because they knew I’d never get a chance with you because you’re… well, you’re you, and I’m me. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, but we were just having so much fun and-”
“You thought you couldn’t get a chance with me?” You chuckled.
Alex looked up. “Well, no. You’re gorgeous-”
“You’re a very hot Formula 1 driver! Alex, I was losing it when you came up to me!”
“I thought you didn’t know anything about F1?!”
“I don’t! But I know about hot famous guys!”
“You liar!” he laughed.
“You lied too!” you laughed.
He smiled. “ I guess we’re pretty evenly matched then, yeah?”
“I guess,” you shrugged, then leaned over and pressed your lips to his.
-----------------
Charles Leclerc:
You and Charles were new, like new new.But he’d invited you to the paddock nonetheless, and you had the weekend off, so off you went to the Ferrari garage. You’d met the so-called ‘Prince of Monaco’ at an Indycar event a few months back when he got your number, and since then you’d been texting back and forth. He finally asked you out, and you agreed, I mean, who wouldn’t, right? Even though you worked in Indycar, you were a born and raised Monegasquean and you were proud of your heritage, and pretty excited to be dating the Monegasque.
“Oh shit,” Pierre grumbled, bumping into you. Recognition finally crossed his face and he smiled. “Y/n, right? We met at the Indycar thing, right?”
“Hi Pierre, yeah, nice to see you,” you smiled. Behind him came Charles, a bright smile for you.
“Are you here for work or-? Oh, for Charles,” he smirked and turned back to Charles . “Le pari est-il toujours valable?” (is the bet still on?)
Your face faltered. Charles didn’t tell you about any bet. What bet?
“Je ne lui ai pas encore dit,” Charles mumbled. Pierre’s smirk grew, as did the sinking pit in your stomach. (I haven’t told her yet.)
“Hey,” Charles turned to you with a smile on his face.
“Hi,” you nodded, more reserved than before. “Congrats on pole.”
His smile dampened. “Is everything alright?”
“All good,” you mustered up your fakest smile. “Ne parie peut-être pas sur une fille qui vit à Monaco, connard.” (Maybe don't make a bet over a girl who lives in Monaco, asshole.)
Charles looked dumbstruck for a moment, and you left him like that. You were worth more than that.
-----------------
Lewis Hamilton:
“Have you told her yet?” George asked, eying you from the other side of the garage.
Lewis shook his head. “I can’t find the right time.” “You need to tell her soon, it’s only a matter of time before someone else tells her.”
“I know I do, I just… everytime I try to bring it up it’s like she’s extra sweet and perfect and I just can’t break her heart like that-”
“Break who’s heart?” you asked, standing beside Lewis.
George shot him a look to say ‘tell her now’, and he nodded. George left you two to talk.
“I was… I came up to you… I-”
“It was a bet to ask me out, I know,” you nodded, sipping your drink. “Whose heart are you breaking?”
Lewis’s brow furrowed. “Yours?”
“I overheard you and your friends at the bar that night,” you explained. “I don’t care. We’re dating because of it, I love you, blah, blah, blah,” you smiled. “Unless it’s been a charade the whole time-”
“NO! It hasn’t, I love you, I promise,” he wrapped his arms around your waist and pressed kisses to your cheek as you laughed.
“You thought that would break my heart?”
His ego was becoming a little bit more than bruised. “Hey!”
You laughed. “OK, ok, relax. Yes, it would’ve broken my heart,” you teased.
He pushed you off, smiling. “I don’t want your pity-”
“Not even a pity fuck?” you whispered, a mischievous smirk on your lips.
He smiled. “Well, I always want that.”
-----------------
Max Verstappen:
“Fuck this game!” Max cursed after his game had crashed for the third time. You made your way into the living room, looking in on the game.
“Everything alright?” you asked.
“All good, sorry liefje,” he responded, not even turning around.
“Is that the girl we put the bets on?” One of his friends asked. Max panicked and shut down the stream, then immediately turned to you.
“Liefje…” he started. You stood there in shock.
“Is that true?” you started. “Was I a fucking bet?!” you shouted.
“It- I- Yes, it started like that, but I love you, I-I’m in love with you!”
“How can I ever fucking trust you?” you shot back. “You’re a liar!”
“I’m sorry-”
“What the fuck does ‘sorry’ do? I’m leaving Max. You are so not the man I thought you were,” you pushed past him, grabbing some of your essentials from your bedroom as he followed behind you, begging you to stay.
You left. He was the one who messed up.
All because of a dumb bet.
-----------------
Lando Norris:
He was sweating through his shirt. Max’s eyes bore into him all night, more specifically, how his arm was draped over your shoulder. He understood his best friend’s confusion. It was mere months ago that Lando had been dared to go up to you and ask you out, mere months ago when he sent a photo into the group chat of you sleeping soundly beside him, asking for the transfers from the men who’d told him to ask you out and somehow get you back into his bed before the next morning. Since then, things had in fact changed. He had changed. You had changed him.
“Lan,” Max hissed. “What the fuck are you doing?”
“Max,” Lando mumbled. “Not now.”
“She deserves to know,” Pietra shook her head. “Y/n, listen to me, I know Lando had probably been a lovely guy but he asked you out because he was dared to-”
“Pietra!” Lando groaned. “What the fuck!”
You turned to Pietra, pushing Lando’s arm off of you. “Are you serious?”
“She’s telling the truth,” Max added.
“Y/n please, just let me explain-”
“There’s nothing to fucking explain. You’re an asshole, don’t call me again,” you scoffed, getting up and leaving with Pietra following quickly behind.
Lando was helpless.

“Brad,” You say above the music that plays on the radio. “I’m worried. Who says they'll like me? I mean, these are your parents.”
Bradley looks over to you, hand stopping the tapping movement on your thigh. His Ray-Bans cover his eyes, but you can tell he's looking at you. “Baby, just be yourself. My mom said she's tired of hearing the stories about you, and how ‘wonderful’ you already seem. I promise it will be fine.”
When the large, suburban Bradshaw home comes in your sight, you feel the pit in your stomach start to fill with worry. “Are you ready?” Bradley asks.
You nod and he shuts the engine off and gets out of the car, and you follow slightly after and grab your purse and phone. There are about fifteen cars parked in the driveway and on the edge of the road, as well as in the grass. You knew it was a family reunion, but not this big of a reunion. You connect your hands with Bradley’s and scoot closer to him.
He takes you up the stairs and knocks on the door. There are some small Halloween and fall decorations on the wrap around porch on each pole. You're zoned out on the porch decor when you hear it. “Bradley! Hello honey!” An older woman's voice captures your attention and you give her a large smile.
She has Bradley in her arms before she takes you in. “Oh, you must be Y/N! You are so beautiful. You are just the sweetest! Come inside!” Her hand pushes you both in and you look around at everyone mingling, children running around, and right in the middle of everything stands Nick Bradshaw.
“Here, why don't you come and meet my dumb husband Nick. Now, we have both been dying to meet you. Bradley never seems to shut his mouth about you, I already love you from what he's told me.” Carole is practically dragging you too, and Bradley shrugs his shoulders and follows after his mother.
“Bradley! There's my boy!” A loud obnoxious shout fills your ears. You smile when Nick hugs Bradley in his arms, and shakes him around. He looks almost identical to Bradley, with thinner hair and the fact he was greying. “And you must be?” He turns and lets go of him, and shakes your hand.
“Y/N. I’m Bradley’s girlfriend.” When you say it, he shouts a yell and kicks his feet around. You can't tell how a man in his sixties can somehow do all of this, but you're smiling and laughing.
“Oh! You are one pretty catch! It is really nice to meet you!” Nick puts his arm around Carole and tugs her into his chest. She hits it playfully and lets Nick kiss her.
“Isn’t she just beautiful?”
“Bradley has good taste, just like his father.” Nick jokes and Bradley laughs. The atmosphere is warm and the worries start to disappear. Bradley stays close to you and he interacts with cousins, aunts, uncles, and others.
“I told you it would be fine.” Bradley told you later, handing you a water as you flipped through old baby pictures and other pictures from his childhood. He sits down next to you and covers an embarrassing picture with his hand. You look up and smile at him, and he kisses you on the tip of your nose and travels to your lips with soft pecks.
“I know. I've also been invited to brunch with your mom.”

4:22’ pm - rin itoshi
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4:22: hi rinnie
4:22: can you pick me up please, i went on the wrong train..😓
you didn’t expect a fast reply, which made you slump onto one of the benches nearby the train station. you were at-least a few miles away from home.
maybe you should’ve paid attention more towards the trains instead of rushingly getting on a random one that was close to leaving.. but it wasn’t your fault, the train had the number you were supposed to go on!
surprisingly you got a reply not even five minutes later.
rin ml 4:26: oh lord.
rin ml 4:26: send me your location, right now.
you sighed in relief. but, apart of you felt a bit terrified. you knew once you would get home you would get a long lecture from your boyfriend.
honestly seeing rin being pissed off was a mix of three things, scary, hot, and sexy. it was undeniable, even if it would leave him slightly red, you could not deny it.
4:27: (location)
4:27: don’t be maddd..
rin ml 4:28: y/n.
rin ml 4:28: oh my god.
4:28: IM SORRY :((
4:28: i swear i was on the right train!
rin ml 4:29: apperantly not.. you’re stupid.
rin ml 4:29: stay where you are, i’m omw now.
4:30: thank you sooo much rin<33
4:30: i love you.
rin ml 4:32: i love you more
rin ml 4:32: i’m still upset, don’t think you’re off the hook baby.
4:33: :((
Tumblr media
“c’mon, let’s go.” your boyfriends sweet voice comes into your senses, slightly startling you as you were busy scrolling on your phone.
before you could say anything, his arm goes around your waist and almost drags you away from the station, making his way to his car.
even if you knew he was frustrated with you, you still smiled and kissed his cheek. you were grateful to have him. very grateful.
“thanks rinnie,” you muttered, hoping he would look back at you. which he did.
though he didn’t reply, he just shook his head and kissed your forehead in return; opening your side of the car so you would get in before getting in his side of the car.
“so, lemme guess. you mixed up the numbers?” your boyfriend side eyes you, turning on the car along with the heater.
your lips formed a thin line, pressing them together. he was right. you nodded your head and avoided eye contact.
“‘m sorry..” you replied, your voice barely a whisper.
rin sighs, shaking his head. you think he would give you the silent treatment, oh how you were so wrong.
he cups your chin with two fingers, forcing you to look up at him without avoiding eye contact. your eyes linger, looking at his orbs.
teal.
the eyes that held all the cold, and seriousness in the word. especially when it was on the field. yet he would never show that side with you.
because he loves you, he adores you. you’re always there when he needs you. there is never a time where he doesn’t see you at his games, cheering him on with everything you’ve got in you.
it’s cute.
he owes you everything. he knows you deserves the world. something as little as this situation isn’t something worth to be stressed out over.
“love, it’s okay.” he murmurs, interlocking his lips with the tip of your nose. he hopes it helps lighten the mood with you.
“next time, just wait for me to pick you up. kay?” he continues, cupping your cheek with one hand. you look up at him in shock. no lecture??
“you’re not gonna lecture me for this? woah!” you gasp, e/c orbs getting brighter.
he chuckles and shakes his head, turning away softly to get the engine of his car starting, not before checking if your seat belt was on.
like always, it’s not on. and you don’t even notice it, even when he groans.
that’s before he moves over to your side to put your seat belt on for you, making sure the strap wasn’t too tight.
“ohhh.. whoops!” you nervously scratch the back of your neck, smiling up at him.
“tch, idiot. i really am the reason to why you’re safe all the time.” a playful smirk appears on his lips, as he drives away from the train station.
you huff and roll your eyes, denying it over and over “no, only sometimes!” you affirmed, noticing how he looks at you with a sarcastic expression.
rin rose his eyebrows, giving you the ‘are ya sure?’ look.you sighed, knowing he was mostly right.
“okay, maybe most times..” he grins, taking your hand into his whilst he drives.

Tumblr media
summary: request :)
bobby nash x platonic!reader x the 118 being his children fr
a/n: i’m a little late to the father’s day game… but i hope you all had a wonderful day and i hope you checked up on those who might not be as fortunate that day <3 enjoy ml, thank you for this sweet request!
y/n had caught bobby just getting off the engine after a call, practically appearing out of nowhere to grab him. she brought him away and up the stairs, leading him to the kitchen.
when bobby walked in, everyone had been in there with small wrapped presents and gift bags. bobby shook his head, “what is all this, guys?”
“happy father’s day!” buck yells, blowing a little party horn as he pushes the gift closer to bobby.
everyone at the station considered bobby as their non-biological father. not a single day went by where bobby wasn’t by their side. he was their captain, but also their friend. bobby fought alongside all of them and they all fought his battles for him. he never imagined that he would have all these people who loved him after what happened. he carried crushing guilt and was prepared to leave it all behind, making it impossible to open up. everyone at the firehouse saved him in every way a person can be saved. he brought out the best version of everyone. he never gave up hope on anyone and everyone there couldn’t thank him enough. y/n was hired by bobby, being her first accepting captain who actually cared about her and the job. she was a light to his day, and his guidance made her a better worker and person. he was their number one soldier.
“bobby, you’re the dad of this firehouse,” hen said.
“you did not have to do any of this,” he says. as kind of a gesture as this is, it’s making him miss his own children even more. however, he didn’t lose all of his children.
“c’mon, cap,” buck speaks excitedly. “you treat me more like a son than my real dad ever has. and you didn’t have to do that. so, open these gifts right now!”
bobby takes bucks first, stripping the bag of the paper and taking out the figure inside. it was a bobble head dressed in firefighting gear, who had similar features to bobby. “where the hell did you get this, buck?” bobby laughs and grins.
“the internet is a very big place, cap.”
“mine next!” chim yells, practically throwing his box into bobby’s arms. when he ripped the red and blue wrapping paper open, it revealed a red tumbler with captain nash on it, along with an LAFD badge above it. chimney weakly taped a picture of his face onto it. “your coffee cups are practically all falling apart, so i wanted to get you the best one out there. and i added some personalization to it,” he winks.
“thank you very much, chimney,” bobby smiles. “i’ll always think about you with my coffee from now on.”
bobby receives an extremely lavish watch from ravi, and his face drops as he opens it. it had little designs on the inside of the glass. “panikkar! how much was this?”
“oh you know, just pocket change,” he teases.
he opens the rest from eddie and hen, along with a few other gifts he received from people. he saved one of the closest for last. y/n gently handed her gift to bobby and set it down in front of him. she had curled the ribbon and wrapped it almost perfectly.
laying on top of the main gift was an air freshener for his car, shaped like a turnout jacket and an axe. it had his name on it and was his favorite scent. underneath was a board, with clear wooden writing. it wrote, captain nash, a true hero. all the names were in a circle around the quote including, diaz, buckley, wilson, han, y/l/n, panikkar. there was small pin on the inside with the word hero on it. “it’s a good luck charm, from all of us. you can wear it on your uniform or whatever you want to wear it on.”
bobby had suddenly been overwhelmed from the love he had been faced with. it was something he wanted for years, but never thinking he was worthy of something like it. a few years earlier, he was ready to leave the world after making up for his losses. when hen and buck found him knocked out from the amount of booze he’d consumed, he knew people were on his side. he was the most they could ask from a father. his eyes became glossy, but he refused to cry any form of tears in front of his crew anymore, even happy ones. he forced a strong front, but the appreciation from his kids brought down the walls.
now, bobby walks into the station every morning, the pin on one of his pockets, his tumbler in hand, a t-shirt from hen or eddie, his new watch. lastly, of course, he walked into his office to see the bobble head of himself on his desk.
he wore all of these items as much as he could, every single one meaning more to him than words. he never thought of himself as a hero, but the complete opposite. everything he is given was a gift, and represents the pure love everyone has for him. however, nothing can ever beat the true family gift of the 118.

Hi ml! I have a request!
Reader is always a super happy person, even when overworked and sick. Wanda is trying to pull R out of her school work, but R replies with something cute and happy like "don't worry your pretty head about me, I'm fine! " which makes Wanda blush, but still worried. Eventually R gets the flu or something, but is still working. Wanda is surprised at how happy and cheerful R is even  though their miserably sick. Eventually R starts to cry at their desk from feeling so sick, and Wanda is finally able to get R away from their desk, and helps R feel better.
Them!
Magic Kisses
Summary: Your feelings are revealed when Wanda takes care of you when you’re sick.
Request to be on a taglist (or multiple) here! (Taglists are at the end of the fic)

“Y/N, did you need something?”
Suddenly hearing F.R.I.D.A.Y’s voice through the lab’s speakers made you let out an undignified yelp as you promptly fell off your stool. Landing in a heap on the floor, you grunted at the pain that spread all over your body and decided to just lay there for a second. Glancing up at the speakers, you said, “Why would I need something, Fri?”
(Even the sound of your own voice made you cringe. You were so nasally with your runny nose).
“You’ve been staring at your blueprints without moving for the past few minutes and from what I can detect, you seem to be developing a cold,” the AI answered matter-of-factly.
You bit back a sigh. You may have been able to hide from the team just how overworked their resident teammate and engineer was, but there was no fooling technology. As much as you loved tinkering around in Tony’s expensive lab, it was times like these that made you second guess your decision to be an Avenger and an aspiring engineer whilst in your senior year of college.
“Just zoned out for a bit, that’s all. I’m alright,” you assured F.R.I.D.A.Y. as you picked yourself up. But as you went to climb back onto the stool, a throbbing pain in your ankle made you hesitate.
You grit your teeth, intent to ignore it, until F.R.I.D.A.Y. piped up. “I’d suggest that you visit Dr. Cho, Y/N.”
You gaze shot to the speakers with a glare. You didn’t want to be pulled from your work now — the blueprints for Tony’s next invention was almost finished! “You do realize that I fell because of you, right?” You snapped at her.
F.R.I.D.A.Y. didn’t respond after that.
You went to get back to work, glancing over the blueprints for the umpteenth time. However, when the pain showed no sign of letting up, you knew that as self-destructive you were, you had to do something about this. You could already hear Tony in your head now, whining all about workers’ comp because you had injured yourself in his lab whilst working for his company.
Dragging yourself to the medbay, you froze in the doorway when a certain redhead caught your eye. Wanda, a close friend and your subsequent crush. It was hard not to like her—she was insanely powerful and, for lack of a better term, hot. The way she was affectionate with you made butterflies swarm in your stomach and you swore her smile was as bright at the stars. When she looked at you, it was like everything fell away, and you had become almost addicted to that feeling.
“Y/N! Everything alright?” Dr. Cho asked and a smile lifted up your face at the sight of Wanda.
“Oh, uh, yeah — I was just hoping to get some ice, I fell off my stool,” you explained, showing them your ankle.
Dr. Cho nodded and went to grab the ice from the freezer. “I can examine it if you need,” she offered.
You glanced at Wanda. “I’m fine, don’t wanna interrupt you guys,” you said, unable to help but wonder what the redhead was doing here.
“You’re not interrupting anything. Dr. Cho just needed me to update some info for my medical file,” Wanda assured you, matching your smile.
You accepted the ice from Dr. Cho with an appreciative nod. “You sure you don’t want an examination? You’ve been holed up in the lab for a while now, might be good to take a break and make sure your ankle’s alright,” Wanda said, eyeing you carefully.
You blushed at the fact that Wanda had noticed. Taking a chance, you said, “Don’t worry your pretty head about me, I’m fine!” Your voice was cheerful, which wasn’t uncommon for you, but there was some force, a push, to it.
Wanda, however, didn’t notice because now she was the one blushing. She went to respond, but it seemed like her brain was short-circuiting, and she just stifled a noise and smiled. Thankfully, Dr. Cho came in to save the day for the redhead.
“Well, if you do want an examination, I’m here all day, okay?” She said, prompting you to nod.
“Thank you,” you said, sparing one last look at Wanda before returning to the lab.
Tumblr media
For the rest of the day, Wanda couldn’t seem to get her mind off you. Not only was she flustered by your comment (little did you know, she did reciprocate your feelings for her), but she couldn’t help but note how long you stayed in the lab.
When it was getting close to dinner time, Wanda caved and went up to the group, most of them hanging out in the living room. “Hey, has anyone seen Y/N around?” She asked.
A chorus of “No”s went around, making her hope deflate. “Check the lab,” Tony suggested.
Oh, she was definitely going to. As she set out for the room, Wanda found herself wishing that you weren’t there. Maybe you had gone to your room to rest — though she knew that was wishful thinking. Once she turned the corner and reached the lab, Wanda’s heart absolutely shattered.
There you were, hunched over on the stool, still hard at work. But it wasn’t that that made Wanda break—it was the fact that she could hear and see you crying, muttering to yourself angrily. She resisted peeking into your mind, no matter how loud your thoughts were or how tempting it was.
“Y/N,” she said softly, gravitating towards you. You seemed to perk up a bit at her presence, but not in the way Wanda hoped. Instead of realizing that she was here to help, you began hurriedly wiping your face and gathering your strewn papers, as if wanting to hide this from her.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay. Are you alright? What’s going on?” She cooed, delicately taking the papers from you and putting them into a neat snack.
Your shoulders slumped, looking away from her. “It’s—” you began, voice small and cracking.
“Don’t tell me that it’s nothing,” Wanda cut in quickly, stern but not unkind.
You relented with a long say. “I’m just—I’m so tired. I have so much work to do, but my ankle hurts so much and I think I’m coming down with something,” you admitted, wiping your nose. There was a little bit of a whine to your words, but Wanda didn’t care. You could whine all you wanted with her.
“Oh, honey. Take a break with me, okay?” Wanda said, not waiting for an answer before she fixed up the things at your station and put the papers away. You watched her, not arguing against it, but some part of you still felt guilty about it.
“I have school and work for Tony—” you began. It was a weak argument and you knew it, but something inside you was compelled to say it.
“There are always extensions and Tony would much rather you rest than continue to work yourself sick,” Wanda pointed out, turning around when she finished organizing your things. She offered her hand out for you to take.
Deciding to give in (this was Wanda, after-all. You’d never say no to her), you accepted her hand and stood up. But when you tried to walk, you ended up stumbling. The pain in your ankle had gotten much worse with it being untreated.
“Okay, first stop: medbay,” Wanda said, doing her best not to get frustrated that you had neglected your health. She knew that you were only trying to do your best and hadn’t meant to hurt yourself.
You nodded. Deep down, you knew it was needed — not just for your ankle, but also for whatever you were ailed with. Wanda looped one of your arms around her neck and one of her arms around your waist, allowing you to give her most of your weight as she helped you walk to the medbay.
It took some time, but the two of you made it there. “Hey, Dr. Cho. I have a patient for you,” Wanda greeted as they entered, causing Dr. Cho to turn around from her computer.
“Of course, sit up here,” Dr. Cho said, gesturing to an examination table before she went to grab her medical bag.
Wanda wasted no time in lifting you up and setting you down on the table. “Do you want me stay for this? I can wait outside if you want,” she asked, not wanting to invade on your privacy.
“Only if you want to,” you said. Normally you weren’t so shy, but when it came to Wanda? She seemed to have some sort of power over you.
Wanda smiled and waited with you while Dr. Cho grabbed her things. She walked over and instructed you to lift your leg up on the table. After probing around the ankle and seeing that it was swollen, she determined that it was a bad sprain and wrapped it up. Then, she grabbed her stereoscope. Wanda watched as you breathed in and out patiently. When she was done, she grabbed a thermometer to take your temperature.
“You do have a fever, 101.2. It is a little high, but I’m not too worried about it right now,” Dr. Cho said, before looking in your ears and throat. “I think you’re just going to need plenty of rest and fluids. Rest your ankle, too. You can take some medication for your fever and any pain.”
“Thank you,” you said, throat a little croaky.
She smiled. “Of course.”
Wanda helped you off from the table and to your room. You were content to rest on your own, but realized that wasn’t going to happen when Wanda propped up pillows for your back and ankle and went into your bathroom to grab some stuff.
“Y/N, you don’t have any medicine in here?” Wanda called, making you chuckle.
“I’m fine, really—” you cut yourself off with a string of your own sneezes that soon dissolved into violent coughs.
Wanda immediately reappeared, walking over to rub your back. Once the fit was over, you leaned back, suddenly tired. “Okay, I’m feeling it now,” you muttered, sniffling.
“Aw, poor thing. I’ll be right back, okay?” Wanda said, brushing some of your hair back. You didn’t want to see her go (you got clingy when sick), but just nodded.
Somewhere along the way, you must’ve dozed off, because soon you woke to the smell of hot, delicious soup. Blinking your eyes open, you found a tray with soup being placed in front of you and your favorite sitcom playing on the TV.
“Oh, Wanda, you didn’t have to,” you said, heart warming at the kind gesture.
Wanda was sitting next to you with a large smile. “I wanted to. Is there anything else you need?” She asked.
Your shook her head. “I’ve got everything I need right here,” you said.
“Me, too — now eat up!” Wanda urged, making you laugh.
Doing what she said, you began eating the soup. “Did you cook this yourself? This is amazing,” you complimented between slurps.
Wanda giggled. “I did,” she said, leaning back against your bed and stretching an arm out. You gladly leaned against her, relishing in her warmth.
Meanwhile, Wanda was freaking out on the inside — you had leaned into her touch! She couldn’t be more happy and did her best to pay attention to the sitcom (though her mind kept on drifting to you) as you finished the soup.
When you were done, you found your head falling onto Wanda’s shoulder. The Scarlet Witch did her best not to freak out but when she noticed, out of the corner of her eye, your grip loosen on your spoon, she dared to look over.
A smile lifted up her face when she saw you fast asleep on her shoulder — god, you were the cutest. Wanda very gently went to maneuver you so your head leaned on your pillow, but a whine from you made her stop. “No, want you,” you mumbled, clearly out of it with sleep, as you just nuzzled your head against her.
Wanda blinked. This was just sleepy nonsense, right? “W-what?” She said, laughing it off.
“I want you, Wan. Don’ leave,” you said.
Her smile grew brighter. “I’m not leaving you, just gotta move the tray, okay?” She said.
You nodded a little at that and allowed Wanda to move your head onto the pillow. She moved your tray and put it on the table. When she turned back to you, you moved closer to her, your arm draping over her stomach.
Wanda just giggled. “You want me to stay?” She asked quietly, so as to not disturb you.
You nodded. “Mhm,” you said, eyes still closed.
Wanda turned off the television and laid down, fixing the blankets over you and herself. Just before she put her head on the pillow, she took a second to look at you. You warmed her heart. This was perfect. Wanda had an idea and her instincts, her gut, told her to make the leap and go for it.
She dipped her head and pressed her lips to your forehead, giving you a sweet kiss. She went to pull away, only to hear you say, “Could you . . . Could you do it again?”
She leaned back in. “On your forehead?” She asked.
Now, your eyes fluttered open, meeting her gaze. “Nope,” you said, smiling yourself.
Wanda kissed your lips this time and you kissed back, your arm tightening around her.
When you leaned back, you were a little dazed. “Wow,” you whispered. “Your magic even extends to your kisses.”
“Does it?” Wanda asked, teasing.
You nodded and leaned your head back against her. Wanda wrapped her arms around you and in minutes, you had fallen back asleep. She didn’t even care that you had kissed her when you were sick, she was just happy to hold you. Which was what she did, looking over you, until she fell asleep herself.

ML: Paper Wings Chapter 6: No Longer Waiting
Marinette wasn’t sure why, but she was at the train station. She was sure she was at her home only moments ago. Something didn’t feel right. She looked around, and suddenly she saw Adrien. She wasn’t sure why he was there, but she rushed to him. “ADRIEN!”
Adrien looked back. “Huh? Marinette?”
“Adrien!” Marinette said, catching up to him. “What are you doing here?”
“Don’t you remember?” Adrien said. “My father and I are moving to London.”
“LONDON?!” Marinette shrieked.
Adrien nodded. “My father says it’ll be good for business. I’m kind of excited too.”
“Huh?” Marinette wondered.
“I mean, all my time in Paris, barring our recent adventure, I was practically in a cage,” Adrien explained. “In London, I can be free!”
“But…” Marinette wondered. “But what about me?”
“We have each other’s phone numbers,” Adrien clarified. “And besides, I’m only a train ride away.”
Marinette panicked. “But-”
“ALL ABOARD!” cried the engineer.
Adrien picked up his bags. “It’s time. Goodbye Marinette.” He and his father started walking onto the train.
Marinette was paralyzed by fear. “Adrien!” She called. He got on the train. “Adrien!” The trains started moving. “ADRIEN!”
Marinette woke up. “Eh, uh, huh?” she said, looking around. She noticed she was in her house on the couch. “Phew!’ she said, relieved. “It must have been a dream.” She looked sad. “But…If that were to happen…” She glanced at her phone. She grew determined, and picked it up.
Meanwhile, the Agrestes were busy eating dinner and discussing Adrien’s escapades. Suddenly, a phone went off. “What’s that?” Gabriel asked.
“Oh,” Adrien said. “It’s just my…phone that I…bought to have a phone…while keeping off the grid…” Adrien said.
“Who’s calling?” Gabriel asked.
“Well, I only gave my number to Marientte, so…probably her,” Adrien answered. Gabriel glared at him. “Eh heh. Sorry?”
“A gentleman shouldn’t keep a lady waiting,” Gabriel said.
“Oh, right,” Adrien said. He answered. “Hello?”
“Hi Adrien,” Marinette replied.
Adrien grew concerned. “Marinette? Is everything alright?”
Marinette hesitated. She sighed. “I’m not sure.”
“What do you mean?” Adrien asked.
“I just…” Marinette said. “Look! This is going to sound crazy. But then again, what part of this hasn’t been crazy, right?” Adrien seemed a little confused. Marinette sighed. “The truth is, after hanging out with you for the past few days, I didn’t want you to leave. I know I said I didn’t want you to leave initially, but this is different. I still didn’t want you, even though I wanted you. I mean, ugh, this is complicated.
OK, so, when you decided enough was enough, and talked to your dad, that’s sort of what I’m doing now. I know you’re staying and all, but I had this dream, and I think it was telling me something. I didn’t want you to run away before, and I don’t want you to run away now because, well, because I…like you. I mean, I like you, like you…” Marinette waited. There was a silence, and then a thud. “ADRIEN?!”
At the Agreste manor, Adrien’s face had turned red, and he dropped his phone. Gabriel, confused, walked over and picked up the phone. “Hello?”
Marinette gasped. “Mr. Agreste?! Is Adrien alright?!”
“I…think he’s a little flustered is all,” Gabriel replied. Marinette was relieved. “I’ll put him back on.”
“WAIT!” Marinette protested.
Gabriel didn’t listen. He took Adrien’s hand, put the phone in it, and closed his hand around it. “Just be calm,” he advised. “And be honest with her, OK?”
Adrien came to his senses. “Uh, yeah. Yeah.” Adrien said. He shook himself. “Marinette?”
“Adrien?!” Marinette replied.
“Marinette!” Adrien repeated. “Um, well, that, uh, that was… Ahem. Sorry. Let me try that again. I get people saying stuff to me like that a lot. You know, because I’m a model. But um, I know that they don’t mean much. But after these past few days, I know you mean something when you say it. And, well, to be honest, that’s not all I noticed.
I saw how determined you were to help others. I saw how friendly you can be to people. I’ve seen you laugh. I’ve seen you cry. I’ve seen you serious. I’ve seen you silly. And I guess over time, I came to appreciate that.
I was leaving Paris because I thought there was nothing here for me. And then we bumped into each other, and then I found something here for me, which is you. I even had the crazy notion of taking you with me, but I knew that wouldn't be fair to you. So that’s part of the reason I confronted my father. Because if I was going to stay, I had to make sure you weren’t taken from me. So, I guess that means I like..like you too?”
Marinette gasped. “Really?”
“...Yeah,” Adrien said, still a little flustered. Gabriel instructed Adrien to give him the phone. “Oh. My father wants to talk to you.” He handed it over.
“Hello?” Gabriel said.
“Hello, Marinette replied.
“Well, it seems like this is just one more thing to talk about with your parents,” Gabriel said.
“I..guess so…” Marinette said.
“I can’t wait,” Gabriel said. “I’ll hand Adrien back his phone now.” He did.
Adrien took it. “Sooooo?”
“Soooooo, I’ll talk with you soon?” Marinette said.
“Yeah,” Adrien said. “Wait! Um, this was a burner phone. I’ll give you my real number, OK”
Marinette nodded. “Sounds good.”
“OK, great!” Adrien said. He gave out his phone number. “Alright. See you later.”
“See you later,” Marinette replied. “Bye!” They hung up. Marinette fell on the couch, overcome with joy. Once Adrien finished dinner, he went to his room to collapse on his bed in the same manner. They both went through an experience these past few days, but they never imagined something like this could happen. But they were glad it did.

Real Car Guy Story, Part 2
Engine Love Story
I tried my very best to channel the racerly vision of engines as just another part to replace, rather than something that had any kind of identity on its own. It’s hard to trust a new (used) engine, though, because what’s he like? What are his sounds and foibles? Maybe at the beginning it’s just a part but you learn all its sounds and you have your routine and idk, it’s a weird feeling.
The day my new engine arrived from California, I didn’t even know that morning was going to be our last cold start together! ToT Our morning routine was: Turn over, idle at 2000, wait until it decreases to 1500. Put it in drive, RPMs to 1000. Winter? Wait a minute, baby til operating temp and piston slap fades.
And you’d think if you popped the hood one engine would be identical to the next--literally an EJ253 being replaced by another EJ253. But the bay genuinely looks different! The pulleys don’t have the same patina, the gaskets aren’t the same. (The gaskets were brand-new MLS ones, to replace the single-layered steel ones from factory that were so well-known for causing head gasket leaks in NA Subarus of this generation--my old engine had had them done previous to my owning him, I suspect as part of his getting out of the auction lot/as part of how he ended up there in the first place.)
You can pop the hood and think, mmm, this is not my engine, not yet.
The new one is louder when it’s cold than my old one, which made me uneasy and then I mostly got over it, because it’s a 109k engine and it’s not rod knock. But the shop put an oil stabilizer in it which may have made the loudness go away completely. I’m personally not sold on using additives, so I’m not sure how I feel about that, but part of me is like, okay, it’s a stock NA engine, not a built STI block. How much can it hurt?
And “not my engine” can be good, too. I was able to do head gaskets without an additional engine pull, and I got to choose what timing kit I wanted, and now this engine has an all-new thermostat, water pump, timing belt, and all the tensioners, etc., which is a service I had done right before I bought the car and that was going to come up due in the next year and a half, and is now not a service I’ll need to pay fo any time soon.
The whole process still felt a little weird because you’d think engine replacement would follow a catastrophic failure, but with the exception of burning out expensive emissions components my old engine ran nicely ‘til the end. I kind of feel like I abandoned him, even though an engine is NOT AN ENTITY it is a part. (Cars are entities...) I think I’m adjusting, though, and I hope it will start feeling like my car’s engine soon. I don’t think I can really claim this until we’ve had a few oil intervals together, but maybe it already is.

The Sequence Chat: Lewis Tunstall, Hugging Face, On Building the Model that Won the AI Math Olympiad
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/the-sequence-chat-lewis-tunstall-hugging-face-on-building-the-model-that-won-the-ai-math-olympiad/
The Sequence Chat: Lewis Tunstall, Hugging Face, On Building the Model that Won the AI Math Olympiad
Details about NuminaMath, its architecture, training process and even things that didn’t work.
Bio:
Lewis Tunstall is a Machine Learning Engineer in the research team at Hugging Face and is the co-author of the bestseller “NLP with Transformers” book. He has previously built machine learning-powered applications for start-ups and enterprises in the domains of natural language processing, topological data analysis, and time series. He holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics, was a 2010 Fulbright Scholar and has held research positions in Australia, the USA, and Switzerland. His current work focuses on building tools and recipes to align language models with human and AI preferences through techniques like reinforcement learning.
This is your second interview at TheSequence. Please tell us a bit about yourself. Your background, current role and how did you get started in AI?
I currently lead the post-training team at Hugging Face, where we focus on providing the open-source community with robust recipes to fine-tune LLMs through libraries like TRL. In a previous life, I was a theoretical physicist researching the strong nuclear force and its connection to dark matter. I accidentally stumbled into AI via my colleagues in experimental physics, who were very excited about applying a (new at the time) technique called “deep learning” to particle collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. I was surprised to learn that around 100 lines of TensorFlow could train a neural net to extract new signals from collision data, often much better than physics-derived features. This prompted me to take part in a Kaggle competition with a few physics friends, and I’ve been hooked on AI ever since!

🛠 ML Work
You were part of the team that built NuminaMath, which recently won the AI Math Olympiad. Could you tell us more about the vision and inspiration behind this project?
This project was a collaboration between Hugging Face and Numina, a French non-profit that was inspired by the AI Math Olympiad (AIMO) to create high-quality datasets and tools for the open-source community. Although there are several open weight models for mathematics, the training datasets are rarely, if ever, made public. We teamed up with Numina to bridge this gap by tackling the first AIMO progress prize with a large-scale dataset of around 850,000 math problem-solution pairs that Numina had been developing prior to the competition. We saw that winning the AIMO competition would be a great way to show the community the power of high-quality datasets and I’m very happy to see that it worked out well!
International Math Olympiads (IMO) cover a wide range of topics, from number theory to algebra and geometry. Recently, Google DeepMind published work in this area, using different models for different types of problems. Do we need specialized models for specific math disciplines, or can a single model tackle the entire set of problems?
That’s a great question and I suspect the answer will depend on how straightforward it is to integrate multiple external verifiers like Lean4 and Wolfram Alpha for models to check their proofs. The current systems are trained to interface with a single external solver, but I expect the next iteration of DeepMind’s approach will involve a generalist model that can use multiple solvers, like how LLMs currently use tools for function calling.
NuminaMath is based on the DeepSeekMath-Base model. What led you to choose this model as the baseline for math reasoning in this project?
This model was largely chosen due to the constraints of the competition: onthe one hand, only pretrained models that were released before February 2024 could be used, and on the other hand, each submission had to run on 2 T4 GPUs in under 9 hours (not easy for LLMs!). Both these constraints made DeepSeekMath 7B the best choice at the time, although there are now much better math models like those from Qwen which would likely score even better in the competition.
Could you describe the various components of the NuminaMath recipe and explain how they work together? I am particularly curious about the application of techniques such as chain-of-thought and tool-integrated reasoning.
We experimented with various fine-tuning recipes, but the one that gave the best results was based on an interesting paper called MuMath-Code.
This paper combines two insights that have been shown to improve the reasoning capabilities of LLMs: Chain of Thought (CoT) templates that provide the intermediate steps needed to obtain the correct answer, and tool-integrated reasoning (TIR), where the LLM is given access to a tool like Python to run computations. Prior research had explored each one independently, but MuMath-Code showed that you get best results by performing two-stage training: first on the CoT data (to learn how to solve problems step-by-step), followed by training on TIR data (to learn how outsource part of the problem to Python). We applied this approach with DeepSeekMath 7B to the datasets Numina created and found it worked really well on our internal evals and the Kaggle leaderboard!
Do you think the NuminaMath architecture can be extended to other scientific fields, such as physics or chemistry?
Our training recipe was tailored to competitive mathematics, where one has a known answer for each problem. For competitive physics or chemistry problems, I suspect the method would generalise provided one integrates the relevant tools for the domain. For example, I suspect that in chemistry one requires access to a broad range of tools in order to solve challenging problems.
What was the training process, pipeline, and dataset for NuminaMath?
Our winning recipe was quite simple in the end and involved applying two rounds of supervised fine-tuning (SFT) to the DeepSeekMath 7B model:
Step 1: Fine-tune the base model on a dataset of 850,000 math problems, where each solution is annotatedin a CoT template.
Step 2: Fine-tune the model from Stage 1 on a synthetic dataset of tool-integrated reasoning, where each math problem is decomposed into a sequence of rationales, Python programs, and their outputs. We generated this dataset from GPT-4 to produce about 70,000 solutions.
For tools, we use the TRL library for training out models on one node of 8 x H100 GPUs. For evaluations and the Kaggle submissions we used vLLM which provides fast inference for LLMs.
What ideas did your team try but ultimately abandon during the implementation of NuminaMath?
The main ideas we tried but didn’t make it to the final submission were the following:
KTO: Using Kahneman-Tversky Optimisation (KTO) to boost the performance of our SFT models. Here the basic idea is to take your current model, generate multiple candidate solutions per problem, and then label those solutions as correct or incorrect according to the ground truth. With this data, one can then optimise the model to boost the probability it produces more of the correct versus incorrect tokens. Although we found this method worked quite well, we were unable to include it in the final submission due to various infrastructure issues on the Kaggle platform in the final days of the competition.
Model merging: We explored a variety of model merging techniques like DARE, TIES, and WARP. Here we used mergekit to merge the SFT and KTO models, or the SFT models with the public DeepSeekMath ones. Overall we found these merges led to either significant regressions on our internal evaluations and we ran out of time to explore this more deeply.
💥 Miscellaneous – a set of rapid-fire questions
What is your favorite area of research outside of generative AI?
As a former physicist, I am excited about the advances being made in AI4Science and specifically in simulating physical processes. I quite like the way Chris Bishop frames this as the “fifth paradigm” of scientific discovery and am hopeful this will help us find answers to some rather thorny problems.
Will we achieve AGI through transformers and scaling laws?
It’s always risky to predict the future, but I think it’s clear that the current systems are lacking several capabilities like episodic memory and the ability to plan over long horizons. Whether these capabilities will emerge at larger scales remains to be seen, but history generally shows that one shouldn’t bet against deep learning!
What will it take for AI to evolve from proving math theorems to formulating original theories, such as the Riemann Hypothesis or the Theory of General Relativity?
My current view is that the main barrier for models to generate novel ideas in mathematics and the natural sciences is having some means to verify correctness and compatibility with experiment. For mathematics, I suspect that projects like Lean4 will play a key role in bridging the gap from proving what is known towards generating novel theorems which are then verified automatically by the model for correctness. For the natural sciences, the challenge appears to be much harder since one needs to both synthesize vast amounts of experimental data and possibly run new experiments to validate new ideas. Nevertheless, there are already hints from works like Sakana’s AI Scientist that formulating novel ideas in ML research is possible, albeit under rather stringent constraints. It will be exciting to see how far this can be pushed into other domains!
Who is your favorite mathematician and computer scientist, and why?
My favorite mathematician is John von Neumann, mostly because I didn’t really understand quantum mechanics until I read his excellent textbook on the subject.

Advancements in AGI
Tumblr media
François Chollet, the original creator of the deep learning framework Keras, created a dataset called ARC to assess a systems level of AGI. The ARC dataset is composed of roughly 900 puzzles to be solved, so this is not a traditional ML dataset. François Chollet also makes claims that the dataset could not be solved by LLMs. Prior to 2024, the highest score was around 30% correct and human-level performance was around 84% correct.
In this article (https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/Rdwui3wHxCeKb7feK/getting-50-sota-on-arc-agi-with-gpt-4o) Ryan Greenblat discusses his roughly 70% correct solution using GPT-4o on the public validation set. Essentially he uses an AI Agent to write a unique Python program for each puzzle. The AI Agent will write a program, test it, then think about what it did wrong, then revise the code and test again.
Why is this important? And why write about it? #1) I think this isn’t as well known as it should be. #2) Personally I was someone who thought the latest advancements in LLMs hardly qualified for the expansive use of the term “AI”. Now I think the hype and use of the term “AI” is nearly appropriate. The ability for an AI Agent to write code, think about what it did wrong, revise that code, and re-test feels like a system that is approaching the functionality of our prefrontal cortex. I feel that François Chollet and other AI researchers have sort of touched on the point that we’ve never really had systems that even remotely mimicked the prefrontal cortex. But now, with AI Agents, I’m not sure we can say that anymore. I'm not saying that AI Agents can solve all problems, not in the least, but I do think that claims from Yann Lecun that auto-regressive inference is dumb … might not be true. Maybe by itself, but coupled with prompt engineering and repeated LLM calls, it seems to show its strength without a doubt.

I will be live-blogging my reading of Descent from an altitude of 10,000 meters because I’m obsessed with this novel and it deserves all the praise for being a more mature and grounded romance. I do love drama of epic proportions normally (erha lol...), but the intersection of realistic characters and my special interest in aviation has me hooked. Normally, I don't even read stories with modern settings.
And, well, this novel is not without drama at all! I was on the edge of my seat reading some of the ATC scenes. It’s truly such a stressful job, on the ground and in the air, especially when things go wrong.
The first chapter highlights one such incident, introducing the ML Captain Chen Jiayu who previously piloted a plane that had a double engine failure and managed to make an emergency landing, saving everyone onboard. It has made him something of a household name, the perfect comparison they draw in the story itself is Captain Sully’s miracle landing on the Hudson River. The name dropping, plus the part introducing the flight attendant fangirling over him, convey the level of his fame from the incident. Just a nice bit of storytelling combining both “telling” and “showing”.
His airline’s “star pilot” indeed.
We get a glimpse of the actual man through his brief interactions while they’re waiting for takeoff clearance. He values efficiency, and takes his responsibilities seriously. However, he expresses impatience when his copilot says they might be stuck holding for 4 hours, and he jokes that you “may as well not fly at all” which is a way of venting but also shows he’s used to getting his way - after all, he even thinks to complain to ATC (air traffic control) about it!
I’ve listened to quite a few of those real ATC conversations on YouTube and it’s all very realistic! But most do keep it professional and don’t complain directly to ATC (even if they’re probably annoyed).
Then comes the real interesting part, the last bit which reveals that the incident from almost 3 years ago is almost like an intrusive thought at times and he can’t help be relive it. He forces himself to forget about it for the moment, but clearly it’s haunted him, for over the “thousand days that followed”.
Instantly, I was intrigued enough to read more. Not only did it seem the author knew their stuff about aviation, but they also acknowledge the trauma that can come from surviving such an ordeal and hit the best of us. Yeah, everyone remembers seeing the emergency landing and sees him as a hero, but when this guy thinks back on it, he imagines panic and the aircraft shaking, seeing his instruments suddenly drop to zero, and seconds later your plane is on a downward path towards the ocean. Just because he’s “over it” enough to do his job doesn’t mean it’s stopped bothering him entirely. We’re all human.
I’m really glad this story is taking itself seriously.

"The Omega Can’t Pretend to Be a Beta After Accidentally Witnessing the Major General’s Susceptible Period"
Status : finished, ch98, 5/5
Danmei, ABO and power couple.
Romantic dog major general alpha ML x cold and mecha obsessed omega MC with many identities.
Pro : Character developments, chemistry between the main couple, I like Mc robots, and how the story just go, very intriguing and captivating.
Cons : uhhh I don't like how Mc had to be kidnapped and cruelly plotted so hard by others who wanted to use him, it wasn't necessary but I think it makes sense so no issue with that. But I also don't like how the "villains" or the doctor who experimented on him get away with it and the ROD/Lu wu prince who fking kidnapped and disabled and scammed Mc lmao, they didn't get any karma which wasn't a satisfying ending for me. Mc had to live his life hiding while those mf are living well and still having a normal life like they did nothing wrong. Only ml's brother got some form of karma which makes me kinda upset like yeah he was bad but he wasn't that bad compared to those crazy mf.
I thank Exiled Rebels Scandalations for translating this!
Sypnosis
The top alpha, Major General Ji Cheying, disguises himself as a down-on-his-luck beta in order to carry out a secret mission. One day, when he goes out to take out the garbage, while wearing a pair of torn socks, he comes across the poor nephew of his landlord, Xie Quan, a good-looking beta who was staying in the dirty and terrible bas**ent.
The two look at each other, each feeling a little sorry for the other.
No one expected that one of these two miserable people was the prestigious Major General Ji and the other was the most powerful mecha engineer in the Empire. And to Ji Cheying’s further surprise, this beautiful beta confessed his passionate love for him!
He was torn again and again under the prudent choice to refuse the other, after all, this is a mission, not the time to talk about love.
When the mission was over and it was time to talk about love, it was Xie Quan’s turn to become baffled, “Who do you think likes you? Who confessed? I didn’t, I’m not, don’t talk nonsense.”
Ji Cheying: ???!
It was only then that Xie Quan unexpectedly realized that the Imperial Major General seemed to have mistakenly thought that he was in love with him.
A few months later, Major General Ji, who had entered his susceptible period, was violent and fierce, not able to be approached by strangers. However, his eyes were red and he was tugging at Xie Quan, his voice hoarse, “You little liar, cheating on my feelings and not taking responsibility.”
Xie Quan sighed, lifted his hair, and tore off the invisible gland patch, finally revealing the omega gland at the back of his neck, “Bite it. I’ll give you a bite.”
Ji Cheying gritted his teeth, “You’re a f*cking omega?”
