I think of Essek’s perpetual levitating as Guy Fieri’s bleach-blond, spiky hair. (Stay with me here.) It’s the kind of thing that you thought was really cool at the time and made you stand out. People took notice of you and thought you were cool cuz you had this one thing you do that was your thing. Except the years go by, and you’ve built a kind of brand around this quirky thing that is maybe not so cool anymore, but people know you for it so you keep doing it. Like, you see a guy with bleached, spiky hair and a tacky shirt, and you think “Oh hey, that’s Guy Fieri.” Likewise, you see a handsome drow wizard who’s floating everywhere, you think “Oh hey, that’s Essek Thelyss.”

But even more years go by, and these quirky things that made you special and noticeable have become something that’s a bit overdone and your friends start saying, “Um, maybe it’s time to stop.” Cuz… Is Guy Fieri’s hair okay? Is it totally fried now? Does he really have to go to Flavortown, or can he take a break? And is Essek just totally winded whenever he does walk anywhere? How does he keep his boyish figure? Is he perpetually skipping leg day? Is Essek really on the run, or would you say he’s “on the float”?
