New to your blog, I was wondering if you have a Merlin fic rec list that's just your favorites. I unfortunately missed the Merlin fandom back when the show was airing so I always feel like I'm just missing the greatest stuff from other people

Hello friend! Welcome to my humble abode of a blog (which resembles more of a Merlin waste disposal). Like you, I missed the show when it was airing, but honestly when you stay as long in this fandom as I have, you will constantly be exposed to wonderful creative energies that give their all. It's a timeless fandom, one of the very few, and no matter when you enter it you will always feel fulfilled. :)

So, favourite fics! Gosh, how can I fit 2K+ bookmarks in one ask. When it comes to this fandom, I admit: I have no life. I've read a real huge number of fics throughout the years, but sometimes it's inevitable for fics to get lost in a sea of bookmarks. So to make things easier, I'll write you some canon fics that immediately come to my mind for how unforgettable they were.

No order; each one has its own chamber in my heart.

Short fic recs (1K-50K)

1. Our broken pieces by @aramblingjay. 10K, T, Canon Era, Hurt/Comfort.

Am I purposefully putting this one on top this time so that everyone who stumbles across this ask could check it out? Yes. Yes I am. Is it my personal mission for the fandom to give this fic the love and kudos it deserves? You bet it's a big overbearing yes. And yes I want you to cry and feel your heart twist with agony because of how beautiful it is. My eyes never shed tears for a fic before this one, and never will after it. There is something in the way the author broke Arthur that just resonated in my innards. And the way Merlin was there for him, not a placebo "I'm here" but there, in all actuality, doing so with every fiber of his love, made it something else. I like to believe that this fic was crafted so perfectly in a parallel universe, and sent to us as a blessing we never knew we needed.

2. Beauty in the Ashes of Our Lives by Fulgance. 21K, T, Canon AU, Magic Reveal.

This is probably the umpteenth time for me to recommend this fic, but I won't stop. I can't stop. This fic ruined me so slowly, and healed me even slower. All my Merlin friends do not believe why this would be one of my favourite fics of all time with what Arthur did, but honestly, it's the fact that the writer wrote it so convincingly that makes me crumble internally. It isn't easy to write angry Arthur, and it's even harder to write him grief-stricken, but here, the author blended both elements so perfectly. It's impossible to forget this fic. It's worth your every second.

3. Linger On Your Pale Blue Eyes by supercalvin. 18K, T, Canon Era, Touch-Starved.

Will this fic linger in your heart? It sure as hell never leaves mine. Every once in a while, I have to go back to this fic and read it like a morning paper. Some fics sustain you.. this is definitely one of them. Most of @supercalvin's fics are of sustaining material. They are made with such depth and broad understanding to the characters that you should take notes. There's this one line that everytime I cross this fic I instantly remember and I go to the nearest pillow to just AAA a little bit. When you reach it, I'm sure you'll recognise it, and I'll be waiting for you to come AAA with me.

4. Dower the Stars by RurouniHime. 40K, E, Golden Age, Pining Arthur, BAMF Merlin.

I don't think anything levels the levels of intimacy in this fic. It is one of the best Arthur characterizations I've ever read. His boundless love and pining for Merlin— oh my heart. Also, the world building and amount of research that must have been done for this fic is astounding. I was this close from following the author's footsteps and, idk, writing an entire research paper about Arthurian lore or something. The moment I read it I immediately wanted to contact the author and just tell them WHY ARE YOU BLESSING US WITH ALL THIS INSTEAD OF PUBLISHING IT?? It was amazing. I reread it a month ago for the third (fourth?) time and found myself gasping and aweing as if I never read it before. It keeps being an experience every time, one so worthwhile.

5. from hearth and ashes, we’re reborn by @remuscariad. 5K, G, Canon AU, Magic Reveal, Hurt/Comfort.

Earthshatteringly-poetic isn't a made-up word powerful enough to describe the beauty of prose here. There are fics that you open and immediately know that you're sold: this was one of them. Its summary alone dropped my jaw down to my neighbour's floor. The dialogue is so meticulously crafted it feels like reading a piece from a past era. Genuinely beautiful.

6. Half of my soul by marvelxpendragon. 2K, G, Post-Canon AU, King Arthur/Court Sorcerer Merlin.

This fic is half of my soul, as the poets say. So what if I reject the canonic ending and resort to pain myself with fics like this instead? I sometimes feel we, as a fandom, try to up the angst of the finale so that we forget how painful it was by bringing even MORE pain. But it's pain that I delight in, because it's pain that MAKES SENSE. Yes give me MCD but with a freaking beautiful life like the one this author gave us. Make me believe it was all worth something. Make me believe they lived.

7. whisper to the flame by @missfaber. 16K, E, Canon AU, Wounded Arthur, Hurt/Comfort.

*clears throat* *prepares for a mental scream*TELL ME HOW YOU LIGHT YOUR FIRESSSSS *clears throat once more and pretends I'm okay*

So, as the author wrote, this is indeed a love letter to the two characters we love more than anything. More than anything, I loved the fact that the author gave Arthur agency to think and act and be a king, even when he was still a prince. Even in most fics where Arthur already knows, this isn't common. So whenever I find a fic that has Smart!Arthur and a lovesick one at that, I would vouch my life and soul for it. Also Protective!Knights is the best thing in the world, ok? I would die for this discourse for real.

8. As a Sea Shell by bathilda bagshot (wellthengameover). 12K, T, Canon AU, Slow Burn.

Okay, so this fic is only bookmarked "Agony until 7 AM", and with that, a rush of drowning memories always come crushing my soul. I lost sleep and SANITY over this fic. I was thrown from a cliff and kept hanging in the air without a respite until the very END. I read it a couple weeks after the finale and it broke me even FURTHER. I was promised growing old together, and it was a big LIE. And yet I love it so, so dearly.

How did you learn to draw backgrounds so skillfully? :0

Aaa I'm still learning and trying to improve but thank you!! The short answer is lots and lots of practice!! However that's not very helpful SO the long answer is that I spent time learning mathematical perspective (which I explain in this post) and spent even longer sitting down and drawing scenery from life and photos. Never underestimate the power of drawing from life!! It can be a little boring if you're not into drawing that sort of thing, but it honestly helped me SO much. Learning to draw something realistically will help you learn how to simplify it! I think the old adage was that you had to "know the rules before you break them"?? Idk I think that was a thing I heard in school HAHA. But it's true!! Knowing how to draw something the way it looks irl will help you to be able to simplify/stylize it in a way that looks and feels right to you :)

Some practical little tips I like to keep in mind for simple backgrounds:

Layering! Keep in mind the foreground, midground, and background. and if you're me, the back-background lol, cause a lot of my backgrounds have faraway mountains or distant trees in the very very back

^related to this, keep in mind that objects further away from the viewer will have a lower saturation and lower contrast than the things closer to the viewer! If you see mountains from far away, you'll notice that they tend to look almost pale blue against the sky. Here's a Wikipedia article about the phenomenon :D

Think about what makes sense for your background. What are some things you might see there? If you're drawing a forest, what types of trees are growing? What sorts of undergrowth? It won't all be the same species, the wild has plenty of diversity in its flora and fauna!

This one's a bit more of an abstract thought than real advice BUT. Try to think of your background as less of a backdrop to put your character in front of, and more as a stage your character is standing in! Try to think of it as a three-dimensional space, instead of a painted screen you're wheeling in behind your characters lol

All this being said, these are my rules for drawing backgrounds. If you find something different that works better for you, do that!! Art is all about breaking rules, so don't take my word (or anyone else's!!) as gospel! Feel free to experiment, to do whatever you think looks good or is fun to make :)

if any of the other archangels fell, they would end up in a similar state to gabriel as they are all powerful enough to survive the death and rebirth process, while their particular sins would determine their appearance/punishment (though some things are universal, such as the loss of flight). i have considered what sin would cause their fall based on their characteristics, with michael in violence, uriel in heresy, and raphael in fraud. michael, had his fall succeeded, would have been left with a need to feed on blood ironically enough, to the point where he would almost be forced to live in the phlegethon as there are barely any sinners left to bleed (unlike v1, a fallen angel of violence is perfectly capable of consuming rancid blood). i also do like following through with the idea that he turns white, both because hakita was right about the red on white aesthetics, but also so he appears anemic and bloodless. uriel would be sort of like gabriel's opposite, suffering from a constant burning fever and would spontaneously combust at times, fires that would leave his skin forever scorched even after putting them out. worst part is that he has no fireproof books to read :( raphael is terribly weighed down and constantly suffering from fatigue, every step so heavy that traveling long distances becomes impossible and he is essentially rendered incapable of helping anyone. his clothes become heavily gilded, and what's interesting is that i actually. sort of came up with raphael's design during my reread of the divine comedy, with the inspiration coming a lot from the hypocrites of fraud SO his punishment is quite similar, with a bit of falsifiers mixed in just for the irony as a healer.

god i would genuinely love little machine settlements, but i think of them as not being organized enough/having advanced enough ai to do so. additionally, there is too much desperation in their situation for building up a village of some kind BUT i do think machines can form bonds with one another and do so even with models other than their own. like i really love the idea of a mindflayer that has several streetcleaners following it around, sort of protecting each other and understanding each other's priorities. also very into a sentry and drone pair, where the drone has worked on being incredibly fast and incredibly annoying so it can distract an enemy until the sentry picks them off lol and and i feel like i DEFINITELY got this idea from someone else (maybe on here? twitter? idk!!!) but like maybe there are just. machines on the surface. machines that don't solely rely on blood and got some of the grid back online and just kind of vibe up there. like they do not look at hell, that's wild shit down there. and they definitely have little towns :]

v1 likes to be power washed lol like it wants to be BLASTED with a fire hose, but it will take any kind of pool/bath it can find! it really just likes the process of "having a wash" - it doesn't mind being covered in blood and guts and every other kind of gore (fun!!!) but splashing around and getting hosed off just never gets old for it. gabriel is definitely a lot less playful and sees bathing as a relaxation thing, but he does genuinely find v1's enjoyment of it incredibly amusing. it's just so happy!!! every time!!! when gabriel's actually taking a bath to get clean however, he is much more like a bird in many ways - he likes having a heavy mist/shower available as well as a pool, and v1 ALWAYS makes sure to be close by when he shakes off his wings. this becomes a bit more difficult when he's a fallen angel, his wings hurting too much to make proper care possible, but v1 joins in to help him clean up through taking the time to mist every feather and then help spread them to air dry. the bath itself is a welcome reprieve from his freezing cold body though, and gabe really enjoys soaking in scalding hot water as often as he can after falling (any temp is fine to v1, so it loves all the bath time they get!!!)

CalcChain tells Excel in which order to carry out the calculations in the spreadsheet. It tells Excel something like "First solve the formula in cell A1, then the one in A2, then B1, etc." CalcChain is short for 'calculation chain'.

lately i have been going to my best friend's house after work (what an unimaginable sentence a month ago) and hanging out and watching whatever toddler shows are on tv while we shoot the shit and i knit. there's another half-repeat on the baby blanket for the baby who has just turned four months old, but it's in the car and the night is dark and full of mosquitoes.

i literally cannot do any life shit, even most doctor's appointments, until i have a real physical stable address so all i am really doing is knitting and playing genshi/n and opening and closing my email like the fridge. i have one security deposit back from the old mass apt plus one more paycheck (but, crucially, not the nearly $2k from the roach apt and we are rapidly approaching lawsuit time) so the cat and i are a little bit more stable/able to put down a security deposit on something else the minute it comes along. this would not have been possible without the incredible generosity of readers like you during that very bad first week here. thank you. i want to do some sort of thank you...stream? liveblog? series of posts about something? but i'm not sure what yet. stay tuned. tell me your thoughts. what would you like to see?

Soo, I'm currently in the process of making an A.U. where the hunters "slowly" kill off everyone else and soon eachother and just.. death. It's all death.

I was just gonna info dump but unfortunately I'm sick and don't have the patience to draw everyone and their ghost designs. So I'd thought I'd just share what I have currently :) (also, I've only came up with the story as far as this so it works out.!)

First, an explanation of how I think ghosts work. (Sorry for crappy handwriting. Maybe I'll translate it later)

(*also forgot to mention that if the person is screaming when they die, it gets cut off and then finished by their ghost self. So it'd be like AAA- -AHH. kind of. Also, when the person gets into their ghost form, ((if it's not a slow death where they feel their consciousness slip away)), it feels like getting air after being suffocated :3)

Anywho, canon deaths are canon deaths. Basically in this a.u everything happened the same until the whole man hunt with Ralph (this is where Ralph actually got caught and his head got put on a stick.)

And I didn't do piggy and Simon because I've been drawing piggy a lot so eh. And Simon has a lot of injuries/wounds and I don't feel like drawing that so yeah. Also, I didn't change much about their deaths.

Ralph is the same from my "ghost Ralph a.u." post. Although I forgot to mention that ghost Ralph's voice is very raspy and he can't raise his voice mainly because of his VOCAL CHORDS BEING SHREDDED.

Yeah.

Now, here's where it gets uhm.. gruesome.

The next person who I would imagine would die is Maurice.

(pretend like I added a hunter paint design. I've been meaning to do that but ehhhh I don't feel like it.)

I feel like Maurice would realize what the hunters is doing is really wrong, and tried to talk everyone out of it, trying to remind them that they're humans and that they don't kill people, but Jack ignored his rambling. And after a while, Jack got sick of his whining, and threats became actions, and he and Roger started to.. tear him apart, basically.

He's missing two fingers, a ear, a foot, a hand, and an eye. (He lost in that order.)

Don't know if I should make them have a merciful killing, by just like, stabbing Maurice in the heart or something to end his suffering, or for him to slowly die of infection, disease, and exsanguination. (Blood loss)

Uhm. Yeah. So, brutal.

I do have Sam and Eric's deaths made up but I don't really feel like drawing them. (Spoiler alert, they don't die together.)

Honestly I fully expected to obsess over Macaque I initially but I ended up not at first? Which was weird for me because manipulative antagonist with shadow powers is 100% my kinda character (surprise surprise here I am obsessing three months later)

But I thought he was a one-off and didn't think too hard about him until I re-watched and AGGGGH

I actually did not expect to obsess over Wukong OR MK because I generally don't obsess over the good guys?? Granted MK is uhhh potentially not gonna be sitting in that role much longer but even before I got to Season 4 I LOVED him!!

And it took me a minute to come around to Wukong but I actually really like him! He's a guy that does what he thinks is the best thing in any given situation and those decisions are FUELED by trauma and I *love* that

MK is OHHH MK BUDDY

They're all very VERY relatable to me in different ways and everything all of them does is absolutely fueled by trauma and their individual reactions to it and I love dissecting them even though I'm really bad at it

To a degree they all take a 'smile to cover the pain' approach but in VERY DIFFERENT WAYS

Wukong takes a very 'conceal don't let it show' approach (sorry I just heard a Frozen song) and personally I think *he* sees it he just doesn't let anyone *else* see it (I'm bad at character analysis again and my interpretations are littered with headcanons so)

Macaque takes a 'smile about it' approach but in the way that he's just really freaking dramatic about it and is more on the 'I'm gonna smile about it but I'm actually really freaking pissed off' side of things. I tried to piece together a good way to say exactly what I'm trying to get across and I can't do it I'm sorry XD. He vents a lot but also tip toes around the exact problem?? Idk exactly how to put it aaa

MK takes a 'conceal don't feel don't let it show' approach in the way that even when he's alone, out of sight out of mind kinda thing. Which canonically might also be what Wukong does but again my interpretations are covered in headcanons so. But that's why being *forced* to look at it threw him so badly

Also I'm 100% with you. While it'd make for a good crackfic, the idea of some crusty stranger existing within Epel is the bad kind of creepy imo. Also I don't have anything to say about the reader's personality. I don't know how it happened with their characterization, but I'd like to imagine that they're more quiet than shy. They have confrontational thoughts, but they don't typically care to express said thoughts. Idk it's sort of hard to explain.

19. How would an enemy describe this oc?

Mercurio - A little confusing, really. They look like they're sleepy and they say little during fights. They are a wizard, so they must be squishy, right? Honestly, yeah. A little. Mercurio is cunning though, and they're always one step ahead of the enemy (the enemy wouldn't describe this part of course bc they don't know this).

Covrin - Perhaps a bit intimidating just based on the size of the weapon he wields, as most people don't want to be beneath something that could break most of their bones with one swing. They also might be surprised that he can maneuver better than expected under all that weight, as well as when he brings out the old Carim parrying dagger (is it weird when paired w/ the big hammer? yes. does it confuse the enemy? also yes). Enemies who are larger than him probably scoff, especially big non-humans.

Avalea - Does the girl even have a real enemy?? If she does, I doubt they'd be too worried really. I feel bad saying that, but she's very not made for fighting ;w;. She is also pretty naive, so outwitting might be a reach too. Her biggest asset is that she is perseverant, so that might throw someone off at least?

20. What’s a superpower or magical ability that this oc would hate having?

For Avalea, I honestly don't think there's anything she would dislike having unless it was something that would be a detriment to the people around her, so anything that she had a hard time controlling that harmed someone else. For anything else, she'd probably be really excited just to be able to do something new! (Also idk why but I imagine her ability would either be something horrific that destroys everything around her or something really sweet and beautiful lmao).

14. If your oc spent one day free from any consequences or recognition for their actions, how would they act?

Oh, Avalea can be really playful and mischievous at times, but it's always good-natured. I can see her playing pranks on strangers only to have them end up being beneficial to the people in some way.

There is a darker side to her too, though, and being able to take revenge on the people who have used her in the past could be an option as well (I won't go into too much detail bc of what it deals with, but she has a lot of inner spite related to it that would feel good to get out I'm sure).

12. How does your oc handle talking to somebody they can’t stand? What if it’s a situation where they’re forced to work with this person?

In this case, Vivian would handle it with passive-aggression x). Even though she has a kind heart like her brother, she isn't as much of a pushover as him, so she'd make every little second difficult for whoever it was she had to work with if she didn't like them. She can also be mischievous and prankful (the internet said that is a word?) like Avalea, but in this case it would be a bit more mean-spirited I think.
