As well as countless of others from the AI generator community. Just talking about how "inaccessible art" is, I decided why not show how wrong these guys are while also helping anyone who actually wants to learn.

The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.

"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.

"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.

"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.

"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.

"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.

"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.

"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.

"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.

Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.

📝As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. If you want to go fancy Michaels is always a good place for traditional supplies. They also get in some good sales and discounts. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are usually more expensive.

For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.

So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.

I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.

hello everyone!! <3 it’s been a long time since i’ve done a milestone event (i think since 2022 lmfao) for a multitude of reasons.

but we’ve reached 4 digits now, so i think at least a small cause for celebration is in order.

hi! because the sims 4 base game is officially free for everyone, i’m gonna list all the mods i use/recommend + cc creators i usually download from to make your game more interesting if base game is all you can own for now. or if you already own several packs and you just want to know what i use!

before you continue:

how to install cc and mods;

be mindful: the more mods and cc you install, the more likely your game is to lag or even break;

some of the mods and cc listed here contain adult (18+) content. view and download at your own discretion;

most mods require updates after game updates, meaning you might need to download new versions of the mods you’ve installed after a game update;

not all mods and cc will be suited for only base game, some might require more dlc. make sure what you’re adding to your game is compatible with the packs you own;

read ALL the information provided by the creators listed;

being familiar with certain modding/the sims 4 terms can be useful here but if you have any questions i can try to answer them for you :)

ps: these are mods and cc i like to use for my personal gameplay style. you might have different tastes and be interested in different mods and cc, of course! so feel free to explore as much as you want until you find what you like!

MODS:

CAS:

more columns in cas by weerbesu: adds more columns to the items menu for easier browsing when you have a lot of content (dlc or cc).

more cas presets by zerbu: without this mod, the game offers a very limited amount of options for body and face presets. this mod adds 100+ more options for these categories, all extracted from the game itself meaning they don’t count as cc.

custom cas background: i currently use this sims 2 background; installing custom cas background is the same as installing cc or mods but i recommend creating a separate folder for your current cas background so you can keep track of it and easily replace it.

shadow remover by xurbansimsx: removes the shadow below your sim in cas. ideal for when you use custom cas backgrounds.

BUILD/BUY:

better build/buy by twistedmexi: better ways to organize and find cc or debug items in the build/buy catalog. for easier browsing when you have a lot of content (dlc or cc).

no weather build/buy by twistedmexi: (requires the seasons expansion pack) gets rid of weather elements such as snow and rain when you enter build/buy mode.

GAMEPLAY:

mc command center by deaderpool: expands functionality for a variety of gameplay aspects. one of the most popular mods because it allows you to control more aspects of gameplay with ease. i recommend reading deaderpool’s website carefully and watching tutorials if needed for a better understanding of the mod. make sure you’re downloading modules that are compatible with the dlc you own.

slice of life by kawaii stacie: adds more realistic situations and events to your sims daily life such as personality, illness, parties, social interactions, etc. you can choose to disable certain features.

ui cheats by weerbesu: allows you to manually cheat by directly clicking on the user interface instead of typing on the cheats bar. all the ways you can use this mod are listed on weerbesu’s page.

(+18) wicked whims by turbodriver: this mod contains explicit adult content that is not suited for players younger than 18 or anyone who is uncomfortable with nudity and graphic sex visuals. only proceed if you’re over 18 years of age and at your own discretion. you’ve been fairly warned. this mod adds detailed and explicit sex gameplay. more animations can be downloaded separately. read turbodriver’s website carefully for more information and further instructions.

MISC:

ts4 mod manager by gametimedev: software that allows you to manage, organize or delete the mods and cc you have installed. useful if you have a lot of cc or broken cc you wanna delete but don’t know the file name.

reshade: it’s a software that allows you to change the color and shades of your game’s graphics (works for more than just sims 4). not an immediate must-have and it took me several tutorials (try this one by misslollypopsims) to understand how to properly use it lmao then it took me more time to find and and adjust a preset exactly the way i liked it, but i really like the results!

CC:

first let’s understand the difference between alpha and maxis match cc:

alpha cc tends to be more detailed, trying to give more realistic traits (like flowy hair, detailed ruffles, etc). this style doesn’t match maxis cartoon-style graphics for the sims 4 and can look out of place;

maxis match cc like the term says, matches maxis graphics and tend to look like they belong in the game, as if maxis had made that content.

you can download whatever type of cc you like, you don’t have to stick to only one of these styles. feel free to explore as you please!;

however, the creators listed here provide mostly maxis match content because i prefer this style;

also, the creators listed here provide mostly cas cc, but some also may occasionally provide build/buy custom creations;

more things:

read the information and instructions provided by each creator before downloading any cc;

some cc might require certain dlc you may not own;

bgc = base game compatible; you don’t need any dlc!;

some creators listed here may provide content that’s not suitable for players younger than 18! explore and download at your discretion;

IMPORTANT:

most links redirect to the creator’s patreon page 

some cc might not be available for free, as creators can put their content behind a paywall for a limited amount of time (around 2-3 weeks) following ea guidelines; 

cc cannot be put behind permanent paywalls as it goes against ea’s guidelines and copyrights.

however it’s okay for cc creators to make money off their creation if people are willing to financially support them in exchange for early access to their content!

other ways to find cc:

the sims resource: a website that hosts a variety of cc for all sims games. you can find more alpha and build/buy cc and it’s a trustworthy website (at least the most trustworthy out of all the cc hosting websites). however it also displays a lot of ads, gives you a countdown to download content and keeps shoving a paid subscription in your face so it can be quite annoying to download from there. also it’s hard to know what’s the future of tsr considering ea just announced an official platform for the sims 4 cc (they’ll likely survive but might suffer some loss, but we still can’t be sure).

tumblr: using tags such as #ts4cc #ts4mm will lead you to more creators and options than the ones listed here. however anyone can post anything using those tags so 1) you might see unrelated content and 2) be careful for viruses and weird links. avoid adfly links.

youtube: look for cc showcase/shopping videos! simmers will often show you what cc they have or got for their game and will link the creators and websites they’ve used!

IN SUMMARY:

read everything about the mod or cc you want in your game before downloading them; 

more cc = more problems, don’t download too much content if your computer/laptop can’t handle it and regularly clean up your mods folder;

there’s nothing i can do about console players, i’m very sorry;

dlc can make the game more interesting so if you want/can get more dlc do some research on what each different pack or kit provides!

no, i don’t know how to pirate the sims 4 but i won’t not encourage it if you find a trustworthy source ;)

be on the look out for mods updates after every game update! outdated mods can break your game!;

ok i just looked back through my blog and it looks like my big theory from way back last year has just… disappeared?? which i’m pretty annoyed about tbh, but i want to expand on it and update it anyway because the casting announcement and logo all validate it and make it a lot more interesting SO

my big magnus protocol theory and what i think the plot will be

so, this is a world completely without the Fears, until BAM. here they are. and with the arg, the encrypted messages and the glitchy aesthetic they seem to be going for, now further expanded on by the logo literally being a glitchy computer screen, i was thinking what if as the fears entered the universe, there was some kind of mass signal or energy surge.

imagine all the screens and electronics in the world suddenly go static, and a jumbled-up incomprehensible message (like the “statement remains” audio) can be heard everywhere, all around the world. and it goes on for around 20-30 minutes. and in those minutes, every single person in the world is fucking TERRIFIED. just frozen in absolute fear.

and of course this causes thousands and thousands of accidents and deaths and just generally terrifies everyone, so naturally every world government thinks it’s an attack of some kind. hence why we follow civil service workers, specifically those working for Incident Assessment and Response. this would be quite an incident!!

in these first few episodes following the signal, we also hear from the prime minister. and i originally thought it would be REALLY fun if the uk prime minister in this universe is the og Elias. i love this idea with all my heart for many reasons, but it doesn’t look like ben meredith will be in it, so i’ve had to modify it a bit. so, either the prime minister will be gwendolyn bouchard, who could either be a relative of elias or transfem elias (although, trans prime minister?? in this godforsaken country??) OR the tim fearon character, who could potentially be jonah magnus or a similar previously established character. but personally, i’m betting on miss gwendolyn, so keep that in mind as you read the rest of this.

and so at the end of the first or second episode, we hear this prime minister in a big meeting about the incident, and the episode ends on a cliffhanger that reveals what the unscrambled audio really was.

it’s mag 200. which is why jon and martin are (potentially) on the cast list. the fears are ushered into the universe using their voices.

but i think what would be an even cooler cliffhanger is if after this big reveal, after the tape squeals and basira says good luck, we hear something we’ve never heard before.

tim fearon’s voice.

so this is where the REDACTED names really come into play. idk what the actual plot will be, but my idea is that jon, martin, and the tim fearon character, who i personally think is the voice of the original jonah magnus, are:

1, stuck as “ghosts in the machine” of sorts, living on as disembodied glitchy voices and nothing more

2, are huge eldritch entities, who can speak through anything and anyone, maybe possess people, etc, and possibly act as similar entities to the fears in a way, creating their own avatars and suchlike - maybe to fight the fears in jon and martin’s cases

or 3, the fears use their voices to actually speak, probably through recordings and electronics, meaning the REDACTED isn’t just to conceal their characters, they actually just don’t have names

also this is a much smaller point but because her name and presumed age are so out of place in comparison to the rest of the cast, i think lady mowbray is a psychic or mystic woman of some kind rather than an actual noble woman, and will be able to talk to the new jon and martin, whatever they are

so yeah that’s it i guess! i hope all this makes sense, if anyone has any questions, anything to add or challenge, or just want to discuss it please please do!! i want to see what people think of this in light of all the new information because i LOVE this idea so much that if it doesn’t happen i might just write it myself lol

this post about lesbian divas rlly delighted me. it's fun to see this niche topic talked about and expanded on with lots of examples. soooo i compiled all the responses as of 21/09/23 10:30pm EST and put them in a spreadsheet. then ranked them by how much of a diva i consider them lol

first off, the general list. i found 152 unique responses in the replies, tags, and comments. some were only first names so i didnt bother researching into who the poster was talking about. images for ease of viewing:

second... what is a diva?? clarifying where im coming from is important to understand my upcoming opinions. i should make clear that im talking about DIVAS as in DIVA WORSHIP as in LIZA MINNELLI-BARBRA STREISAND-BETTE DAVIS-LADY GAGA etcetera. dykes can see these female celebs as divas as well, but what the original post touches on is the male diva.

this rthko ask explains the diva well. you should also take a look at scholarly articles and books -- divas have been a part of recorded gay culture and esp gay male culture and drag queen culture forever -- the term isnt concrete. rthko says that "there's no real formula" but lists these typical features of a diva:

larger than life -- glam, humor, charisma? would a drag queen impersonate them?

theatrical / proximity to theatre

sexy / horny -- rthko notes here that these arent requirements, citing liza's lack of sexual overtness

strength

niche -- can be popular but not a general crowd-pleaser

gay rights supporter -- before it was cool

now rthko is talking about female divas, even noting the blind spot for bi/lesbian fans and artists. i say you can apply the same features to male celebrities to identify the male divas dykes idolize. i should note that some of the ppl on the list are women or genderqueer. so the list is not entirely male.

another note: im putting so much emphasis on DIVAHOOD because it's SUCH a specific term. not all icons, "weird little guys", "blorbos" are divas. one thing rthko doesn't touch on is how a diva often has a strong sense of self that the devotee can identify and want to emulate -- at the xtreme, leads to drag art. if they dont inspire and amaze, then are they a diva?

lets get into part 3: which of these 152 people / concepts / groups are honest to god divas? you can argue they're all Icons to some extent (the bare minimum being having a lesbian fanbase) but do they have what rthko and i (and gay culture researchers) consider to be the features of a diva?

first thing i did identify those i both recognized and "saw divahood within". ended up with 44:

then i shrunk down the list even further to 18 (again, pure opinion):

then i ranked the 44 more methodically by mapping out the 7 features of the diva:

this ranking is not definite -- though i tried to be fair, considering the limits to what i know, it is subjective

i dont know the histories of some of these people, so i may be missing some things. an inverse example: i know far too much about gerard way, so i had a good idea of how he fit into each feature

some of these i couldnt decide whether i should check or not. al pacino i was esp worried about... couldnt justify checking those boxes the way i can for other people

either way, my findings yielded interesting results! 3 of the most commonly talked about singer-songwriters (bruce, bob, johnny) ranked low. this may indicate that there's other features to the male diva that arent specified or dont apply to females divas / gay male devotees. perhaps defined gender expression, or “voice for lesbians”, or something else.

all of the people with a score of 4 or more can be emulated. "sex" (meaning overt sexuality) is the least common feature, after "theatrical".

though anyone can be a diva to anyone, there's a certain "canon" of who is a diva in gay circles. liza barbra bette gaga. this messy qualitative approach is an attempt to figure that out for dyke divas. i would love to talk about it more.

I'm still physically wiped out and my head's too fuzzy to do 'real' writing/revisions on my story, but I'm just coherent enough that I want to chitter-chatter about my fic.

So in the course of working on Choices, one of the things I've spent an inordinate amount of time on is figuring out the 'cohorts' for the valleyfolk. What I mean by 'cohorts' are the groups of people who are in a similar age-range to one another and then further subdivided into 'natives' (aka 'people who grew up together in the valley') and 'transplants.' After all, one of the things I'm trying to accomplish is interweaving three large expansion mods with the base game and coming up with a cohesive whole, and that means knowing who from the various mods have known each other basically forever.

Under the cut, I break down who's in what cohort. I may or may not later flesh out my thinking about why I plopped certain people into certain groups, mostly because when I started to do so with this list, the post grew disgustingly (more) bloated. If I do, I'll probably do a separate post for each cohort. After all, this is the site for rambling about this sort of random stuff, right? 😅 (Edit: that's exactly how I spent my afternoon. I divided the population of the valley into five different cohorts/generations. Ages are based on how old they are/would be during the course of Choices. They are also in order of eldest down to youngest. I have actual ages recorded for most of the characters, but it cluttered up this list waaay too much.

Two crazy theories I thought of after reading "Doctor Strange (2023) #5":

Warning: You're probably going to question my sanity after reading this.

2 - Clea's new sister is Sofia Strange.

Okay, let's start, for those who don't know who "Sofia Strange" is, she is the daughter of Doctor Strange and Clea in the comics. Well, she was, because she never came back after a single appearance in "Epic Anthology" and we can assume that Marvel "forgot" about her and she never existed on Earth-616. It never happened, no one mentions her (not even Clea), wiped out of existence. BUT... An alternate version of her appeared in "Wastelanders: Doom" last year and was already an adult. That means Marvel hasn't forgotten about her and they still know she was left out on Earth-616.

As for the theory, I started to think it would be "funny" if Umar's new daughter was revealed to be the new Sofia Strange on Earth-616. Yes, you might think I'm hallucinating, but like, if Umar really dies and Clea has to take care of her new sister, then what are the chances of Clea and Stephen naming her "Sofia"? Besides, it looks like this child is going to be Tiboro and Umar's successor, so Clea and Stephen are going to have to teach her magic. And let's face it, Clea and Stephen would be MUCH better parents than Tiboro and Umar, I would give the child 1 year to live, until Tiboro and Umar start killing each other after General Strange is eliminated. Another reason I created this theory, is that I think it's time for Marvel to bring Sofia back and expand this family even further, how can they disappear with her for over a decade? It has so much potential and this is a new chance. And of course, with this new child being created by Clea and Stephen, the bond between them will be stronger than it already is, I will NOT risk the possibility of Marvel ruining this couple again and turning them into "Mary Jane and Peter 2.0". Enough of the love drama, make these two stick together forever and have a child to take care of. If even Dormammu has a son who was born on Earth, then Clea and Stephen will take care of a child, even if it is not their biological daughter.

1 - Dormammu will kill General Strange.

What? I have to give hope to my favorite villain to do something new in comics, the guy is hungry to kill some mystical being. Anyway, this theory probably isn't "crazy", it's just unlikely, but I'm going to put it here because I want to know what you guys think of the idea.

Look, we know that Stephen and Dormammu are in the middle of a "Cold War", they are not killing each other like they used to and they are in the most possible "peace" they can have. However, one of Dormammu's most interesting lines in the third chapter of "Doctor Strange (2023)" was this:

"When I kill you, you will stay dead."

It went something like that, I don't remember the whole sentence, because I'm too lazy to remember now. Continuing the theory, we already know that Dormammu wants to kill Stephen with all the Flames of the Faltines he has, but he can't, because they are in a Cold War. BUT... Now there's a new version of Stephen Strange who is threatening to kill all the rulers of other dimensions and Umar is one of the targets. Yes, Dormammu said "I'm Out" after the attack started in the last comic, but if there's one target General Strange is going to focus on in the future, it's definitely going to be Dormammu. Even if General Strange couldn't get to him, Dormammu has to know that he might be on General Strange's hit list. So, assuming Stephen and Clea fail to defeat General Strange, who could they ask for help? Dormammu is one of those, because despite the rivalry, Dormammu has to realize what a threat this crazy guy is. Furthermore, I think it would be interesting for Dormammu to "feel something" with Umar's (possible) death, if it happens. I know, Dormammu doesn't seem to care about the rest of the family these days, but anyone who's read "Defenders (2005)" knows that Dormammu still seemed to love his sister. Yes, she betrayed him at the end (again), but I think it's possible there's still a certain "concern" within the character, something that might affect him to go after General Strange. Unlikely, I know, because Marvel... is Marvel, but Jed MacKay has already proven himself to be one of the best writers at Marvel and he is one of the best in the Doctor Strange comics. So I think it's possible for this to happen, just because of Jed MacKay and the line Dormammu said in the third chapter. Dormammu could still say something like this after killing General Strange:

"I told you... When I kill you, you will stay dead."

This would be a moment to remember for Stephen and the readers, because Dormammu is still a threat in Stephen's life. It would be a moment of "relief" for the villain too, because he managed to satisfy (a little) his desire to kill his rival, even though it was an alternative version.

Empanada’s nice, you like Empanada. You like Em. It’s Sunny you’re not a fan of. Sunny’s just all in your face with money and sunglasses and shit. But, like, Sunny’s fine too. Sunny’s just a bit much though. Sunny takes a while to get used to.

Yes, that was a quote from Phil. It's a pretty good representation of how he talks about Sunny. He was laughing while he said it and I truly don't think he was trying to be unkind but the word choice and comparison to Empanada were not good. I've seen people claiming that he praises them when they're not around but his usual way of complimenting her also tends to involve some less than favorable phrases.

This was a conversation between him, Chayanne, and Tallulah so I think anyone who doesn't watch Phil missed it and most people who do brushed it off because they were more focused on the rest of the conversation. It starts at about 5:21 in the vod from the 29th. He did make a lot of good points and I'd recommend watching the whole thing. He did a good job of handling Tallulah's concerns over the new eggs and comparing it to his own experience when the older eggs showed up, talking about egg island, and coming up with a plan to help Tallulah feel comfortable.

Like I said in my first ask I know part of my frustration is with how other people react to his character. I get that he's not doing it on purpose. I don't mind conflict between them. I think it's really interesting that one of the people at the top of Tubbo's list is at the bottom for his daughter. I don't like the fact that people act like he's doing nothing wrong and it's all a misunderstanding. He is doing something wrong and it's a genuine character flaw that he doesn't seem to realize how bad his phrasing can be. But if he didn't have flaws he would be a boring and unrealistic character. This story is more realistic than a lot of what happens on the QSMP which is part of what makes it interesting to analyze and I think it's going to be a great opportunity for storytelling and character growth on both sides.

Okay, thank you, never heard this part before. And it’s like an expanded version of what he told Tallulah on the day they woke up. Wild.

And yeah, I agree. Criticizing character’s behavior is not equal to disliking the storyline or dynamic. Phil and Sunny’s admin do a great job rping this, that is exactly why there are so many discussions and analysis! You can call out characters for being dicks without wishing a pristine and idealistic relationship between everyone.

I enjoy this story so much. It’s so intriguing. I wonder how they will navigate it further. c!Phil does a great job portraying his character and his flaws. But q!Phil is a dick towards Sunny and should try better.

Bad Ideas of the Day Part 6 - Can't Stop Won't Stop

The monthly-ish roundup of bad ideas of the day! If you haven't seen these, I often put a bad idea of the day into the ideas channel in the fic discord; this is a monthly-ish roundup of them. The prior month's is here and then links further and futher back go.

As always, if anyone does something with one of these lemme know, I wanna see! This month's list is a little bit shorter than normal with fifteen prompts; I've been busy with holidays and all.

Bad idea of the day, you are what you eat edition: After the first day of school, Adaine is shocked to find out that an ancient bylaw of the school states that any student who kills a member of staff automatically inherits their position, and so she is in fact now the lunch lady, sworn to somehow provide quasi-edible meals to the students by the fourth bell of the day.

Bad idea of the day, strength in numbers edition: Fig turns up at the start of junior year claiming to now be a mathemagician, someone who wins in battle through the power of math, profoundly annoying Adaine who knows that's not how that works at all right up until the point in their first battle of the year where she yells out a complex equation, then stabs the person in the face while they're trying to work out what the hell she's doing.

Bad idea of the day, important life lessons edition: Worried that they're going to end up malnourished as adults, or at a minimum living on whatever they can pull from an interdimensional city within a magical jacket, Sandra Lynn, Jawbone, and Lydia start trying to teach the various children of Mordred Manor how to cook, mostly directed at Adaine and Aelwyn (who have 0 knowledge or skill in it) but expanding out to showing Kristen the wonders of various non-corn based cuisine, Fig how to use spice in a slightly more restrained way when cooking for others, and also the three of them going to a great deal of effort to learn the magic needed to cook ghost food so they can teach it to Zayn. (Ragh attends but is already a good cook.)

Bad idea of the day, hearts and crafts edition: Learning that it's a tradition among the devils of the hells to bring any romantic interest they might wish to pursue a trophy of their enemy, Fig drags the rest of her friends into a quest to cut out the heart of Ayda's greatest foe, the ancient pirate treasurer in charge of Leviathan's budget.

Bad idea of the day, winter wonderland edition: A fic covering the first snow day in Mordred Manor, up to and including all-out magical snowball fights, one of the ghosts possessing and bringing to life the snowman that gets made, and Ayda feeling kind of left out because she can't really play in the snow without it melting until, Rudolph-like, that becomes very useful when they really need to shovel the driveway but nobody wants to. (remember, kids, it's fine to make fun of someone for their differences unless that difference has a utility to society (???))

Bad idea of the day, It's 3 AM in a werehouse edition: The month after Tracker has a bad full moon and starts chewing on the walls, the denizens of Mordred manor are extremely alarmed to discover in the middle of the next full moon that a) their house is sentient and b) their house is now a werewolf and they need to go.

Bad idea of the day, class swap edition: Fabian Seacaster arrives at Aguefort hoping to turn around his family fortunes after his father was driven penniless out of Leviathan and off the seas, and is lucky enough to quickly find himself in a party that seems destined for finanical greatness. After all, other than the refugee high elf girl, his party consists of the heir to an invention empire, a girl who has been part of the leadership of a megachurch since she was a small child, a princess of Hell, and Riz Gukgak, son of THE Pok and Sklonda Gukgak.

Bad idea of the day, movie magic edition: The Dream Team has to deal with a sudden sequence of threats from movies coming to life, which is particularly not great for New York which now must deal with threats like King Kong, the alien ships from Independence Day, climate change, and an ungodly number of bad sequels like Home Alone 2 or Friday the 13th part 8

Bad idea of the day, hell is other parents edition: A fic that's just a meeting of the Aguefort PTA

Bad idea of the day, true art is petty edition: Driven by a need to out-do Lucienne's alleged fiancée, Margaret devotes herself to becoming a universe-renowned artist and poet, culminating in her spending the entire duration of the battle of the brands painting scenes inspired by the fight while ducking bullets and plinth mental blasts on-camera.

Bad idea of the day, rat race edition: Learning that New York is planning on putting forth a bid for the Olympics that will include plans to 'clean up' the city by further displacing the homeless without actually helping them, Kugrash decides to be the rat in the soup that will blow up the bid during the olympic committee's tour and presentation of the city. Can he be gross enough to derail it, or will New York City end up with a bunch of white elephant buildings and debt for a brief party at the people of New York's expense?

Bad idea of the day, oh now you've done it edition: Freshman year, Adaine speed runs getting kicked out of her house in one of the fastest ways possible: She befriends Zayn and becomes a goth.

Bad idea of the day, it's im-portent edition: Sometime during the time between freshman and sophomore year, Fabian catches on that his party's wizard is using her limited control over the very nature of fate itself to try to make him successfully meet cute with anyone - ANYONE - who isn't her sister.

Bad idea of the day, the easiest way to elevate your fantasy setting is to make something weird happen to the moon edition: Convinced that Galicaea is behind the eldritch monsters suddenly attacking Solace since Cassandra took up residence there, Kristen talks the rest of the Bad Kids into her plan: Get Gorgug's parents to make a Hangrocket so they can go to the moon and blow it up, shattering both the moon itself and Fallinel's faith in Galicaea to reduce her power enough to make the monsters stop.

Bad idea of the day, I'm Getting Fantasy High Ones Out Here While I Can edition: In a fit of paranoia, Riz decides that his friends are in terrible danger of being assassinated by Fallinel/the Helioic church/Hell/Whitclaw's children/Sam Nightingale and that he needs to keep an eye on them at all times, resulting in everyone else getting annoyed by him doing things like hiding in the secret passages of Mordred Manor

Earlier this month, while the rest of the country was celebrating the achievements of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., parents and children in the “Dissident Homeschool” network opened a lesson plan and were greeted with the words: “As Adolf Hitler wrote…”

The contents of the MLK lesson plan would be shocking for almost anyone, but for members of the 2,400-member “Dissident Homeschool” Telegram channel, this was a regular Monday at school.

“It is up to us to ensure our children know him for the deceitful, dishonest, riot-inciting negro he actually was,” the administrator of the network’s Telegram channel wrote, alongside a downloadable lesson plan for elementary school children. “He is the face of a movement which ethnically cleansed whites out of urban areas and precipitated the anti-white regime that we are now fighting to free ourselves from.”

Since the group began in October 2021 it has openly embraced Nazi ideology and promoted white supremacy, while proudly discouraging parents from letting their white children play with or have any contact with people of any other race. Admins and members use racist, homophobic, and antisemitic slurs without shame, and quote Hitler and other Nazi leaders daily in a channel open to the public.

VICE News joined the group simply by clicking on a link, though the list of members was not publicly visible.

What’s even more disturbing, however, is that the couple who run the channel are not only teaching parents how to indoctrinate their children into this fascist ideology, they’re also encouraging them to meet up in real life and join even more radical groups, which could further reinforce their beliefs and potentially push them toward violent action.

‘MR. AND MRS. SAXON’

The “Dissident Homeschool” network is run by a husband and wife team who use the aliases “Mr. and Mrs. Saxon.” This week the antifascist research group Anonymous Comrades Collective published a detailed report that unmasked the Saxons as Logan and Katja Lawrence, who live in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, with their four young children.

The researchers were able to identify the Lawrences through biographical details they shared in the Telegram channel’s group chat and on podcast appearances. One of the key clues to identifying them came when they revealed that they owned a German Shepherd called Blondi—the same name as Hitler’s dog.

The researchers found photos that Katja posted on Facebook with her German Shepherd, and were also able to confirm Katja Lawrence’s ownership of this dog through the Wyandot County dog licensing website dog search feature.

The Lawrences did not respond to multiple emails, text messages, social media messages, and phone calls from VICE News to discuss the contents of the report and their neo-Nazi homeschooling group.

Katja Lawrence, who is in her mid-30s, launched the channel in October 2021, because she “was having a rough time finding Nazi-approved school material for [her] homeschool children,” as she told the neo-Nazi podcast “Achtung! Amerikaner” last year.

Later in the same podcast episode, Lawrence expanded on her view on why she wanted to educate her children at home. “We have our children’s best interest at heart and nobody can do a better job than we can because it’s our child. We are so deeply invested into making sure that that child becomes a wonderful Nazi,” she said.

When VICE News asked for comment on the Lawrences and their channel, the host of the podcast, Gordon Hahl, replied: “I think you should kill yourself instead.”

Katja Lawrence, born Katja van den Berg, is originally from the Netherlands and moved to the U.S. after meeting her husband at the Oktoberfest festival in Berlin, according to an old LiveJournal blog uncovered by the researchers. She became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2017.

Logan Lawrence works as an agent for a local, family-run insurance agency. When reached by phone, an employee at the company told VICE News that they would not be commenting on the story.

Logan is also a member of a local Masonic lodge and features in a number of pictures on its website, where he is listed as an officer of the lodge. The secretary of the lodge did not respond to VICE News’ request for comment.

Both Katja and Lawrence have a limited presence on mainstream social media platforms, and the one Facebook account that was operated by Katja was deleted this week after the Anonymous Comrades Collective report was published.

Katja Lawrence is the main poster on the “Dissident Homeschool” channel, posting classroom schedules, book lists, lesson plans, and other educational resources for like-minded parents.

RACIST LESSON PLANS

Lawrence uses every lesson plan as an opportunity to push racist ideology. In one “math assignment,” children were asked to interpret “crime statistics,” the goal of which was to “realize the demographics to be cautious around.” Another lesson called “IQ Unit Study” discusses IQ scores. “The blacks—on average—have a much lower IQ than whites,” Lawrence wrote.

Last week the group chat channel belonging to the “Dissident Homeschool” network was shut down, but VICE News has reviewed an archive of the chats dating back to October 2021, showing that initially the channel was populated by a small number of core members who contributed most of the comments and content.

However, by the time the chat archive ended on Jan. 4, there were hundreds more people contributing to the conversations, and discussions had expanded from children’s education to the dangers of diversity and how “Indiana Jones” movies are nothing more than “Jewish revenge porn.”

One parent posting in the group last year thanked the Lawrences for their work and explained why they agreed that public school education was not for them.

“This is why I want to make the switch. I don’t even want my kids exposed to the gay loving, anti-family, Jew factory that is public school, I can’t stand it.”

Other parents offered their own educational resources, with one member writing: “Here is an overview of 10 Reason why Hitler was one of the Good Guys:”

When one parent named Nancy recommended three preachers that the group might find interesting, another member responded: “A ni**er, a race mixer, and a guy who literally says that Israel should rule the world. You're 0 for 3.”

Katja Lawrence then added: “Nancy, did you know you are in a chat of dissidents who fully support white nationalism? We do not support Israel and do not listen to black preachers.”

The members of the channel have also expanded beyond the U.S. to include members from other countries, though only those from European countries with acceptable ethnicity, such as Norway, Germany, and the U.K., are welcomed.

At one point in the chat, Katja Lawrence told a UK-based member of the group that she would help put him in touch with the head of one of the biggest white nationalist groups in the U.K., suggesting the Lawrences have made connections with antisemites and white supremacists outside of their own homeschooling community.

BAKING A ‘FÜHRER CAKE’

When the Telegram channel reached its 1,000th subscriber, just months after it launched, Katja Lawrence posted a picture of German schoolchildren performing a Nazi salute in a classroom, writing: “It fills my heart with joy to know there is such a strong base of homeschoolers and homeschool-interested national socialists. Hail Victory.”

The Lawrences also described how their family celebrated Hitler’s birthday by baking a “Führer cake.”

“We had a lovely dinner followed by Führerkuchen,” Katja Lawrence wrote. “Our children celebrated Adolf’s birthday today by learning about Germany and eating favorite German foods.” She later added that she had baked “quite a few swastika items, my latest a swastika apple pie.”

In one chilling, now-deleted post on Telegram, Katla Lawrence posted an audio message of her children shouting “sieg heil.”

While Katja and Logan Lawrence claim in Telegram comments that they warn their children not to discuss their Nazi views with those outside the family, they also don’t limit their activities to the online world and help others to connect with fellow white nationalists in the real world.

SECRET ‘POOL PARTIES’

“There is a huge network of people like us,” Katja wrote on the Telegram channel. “If you are asking what you can do: get vetted and join a local pool party. A “pool party” is the name for a secretive meetup organized by white supremacist group The Right Stuff and its political wing the National Justice Party. Katja Lawrence even goes so far as to share the direct email for a contact at The Right Stuff who deals with vetting, while an account named the “National Justice Party” posts updates that include calls for “Dissident Homeschool” members to join its supporter group and updates on its Christmas charity drive.

“It has been huge for us to get into that real life network. Contribute by joining. It makes all the difference,” Katja Lawrence wrote.

It is hard to gauge the influence of the “Dissident Homeschool Network,” but in leaked emails from people attempting to join the white nationalist group Patriot Front, applicants list the “Dissident Homeschool” as being “Influential figures, media outlets or platforms.”

The Right Stuff and the National Justice League were described by the Anti-Defamation League as “virulently antisemitic”, while 31 members of Patriot Front were arrested last year inside a U-haul truck on their way to an LGBTQ Pride event in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, carrying shields and smoke grenades.

Yet Katja attempts to describe these group’s activities as entirely wholesome.

“To dispel some misconceptions: these groups do not encourage or solicit people to commit illegal activities,” Katja wrote. "It is a nice group of wholesome white people getting together for cookouts and such.”

Hearing about pet play from you is very interesting. As I've mentioned before, our pasts are tragically similar in some ways. I've had to be fully responsible and completely in control of myself from a very young age. do you have any advice for planning out the story and each chapter? im trying to plan out this fic idea i have but i don’t really know how so i thought i’d ask one of the best ao3 authors i’ve seen

oh bby i'm about to go into SO much detail that i'm sure you didn't ask for but here we go! i've spent countless hours of my life on fic planning, and it usually goes entirely unseen by y'all! i'll try to use parts of my earlier planning for stormbreak as an example so as to avoid spoilers while giving you the ability to see how the plans translate into the finished product. this will also give anyone who's interested a cool behind-the-scenes look at how some of stormbreak's chapters evolved from my earliest notes!

i organize all of my planning in google drive, and i have several distinct stages i go through that increase in detail the further along you go.

at the broadest level, i have two documents that i use for brainstorming. one of them, called "snippets," is miscellaneous little half-thoughts and snippets or late-night ideas. it includes both scenes and characterizations. it's basically little notes and reminders to myself. these snippets can usually be worked into the fic at mostly any point. this document is pretty long; about 50 pages. here are some examples of the types of things i put in this doc, including something that inspired a scene later in chapter 11:

the second brainstorming document is called "scenes." this is basically a list of every single interaction and moment that i want to happen. each line of text will represent one of the povs that will end up in stormbreak, with usually 2-3 povs per chapter. each sentence is super brief, like max 10 words, and i'll usually spit them out without regard to chronology since some scenes can be worked in anywhere.

now beginning to put things together i have the document i call "chronological events." here, the scenes are all put in a specific chronological order. i'll assign chronology to certain scenes that have chronological flexibility. and each scene will be expanded into 3-4 bullet points that get at how this scene will advance the plot (through politics, characters, or relationships). here's an example of what this looked like for the scene that became alicent's pov in chapter 12:

the "chronological events" document is what i reference first any time i'm going through the planning process for a new chapter. it reminds me of what i need to accomplish with the chapter.

so now let's say i've looked at this document and want to proceed to the initial outline for the chapter. i write these in documents within a folder called "short chapter outlines," and each document is titled "short chapter X outline," with X just corresponding to the number in the actual fic. this will expand the bullet points from "chronological events" into an a few actual paragraphs, and add in some extra padding that isn't strictly plot-relevant but helps to build out the scenes. this is an example of what this looked like for the scene that became aemond's pov in chapter 2:

you can also see that this doesn't always end up being fully translated into the end product. in this example, i changed the events towards the end when writing the actual chapter because it made more sense to me.

okay now we go onto the last stage of planning before i write the actual chapter: the long outline. just like with the short versions, i keep these documents in a "long chapter outlines" folder and each doc is titled "long chapter X outline." it further expands upon the short outline; i'll put the short outline on the left half of the screen to look at it while i write the long outline on the right half of the screen. this is basically me stream-of-consciousness writing the chapter. the goal is to get the entire scene hammered out, pretty much paragraph by paragraph. if there are any particular descriptions, lines of dialogue, or even brief moments that i get stuck on, i write them in shorthand and don't worry about making them pretty. here's an example of this, from the scene that became aemond's pov at the start of chapter 6:

you can see that i expanded on most of these paragraphs and polished the sentences between this and the final chapter. but also that the level of detail here is really high.

lastly, we have the actual chapter, which i write based off of this long outline. i put the long outline on the left side and the chapter itself on the right side of my screen so i can see both at once. i write all of my chapters in microsoft word because that's the format i've written stories in since i was a child and it's where my creativity works best for whatever weird reason. the chapter always stays very true to the long outline, but as you'll see if you compare the long outline above to the actual chapter 6 i do add in a bunch of extra detail. the long outline is usually between 4,000 and 5,000 words and 10-15 pages, while my chapters are pretty much upwards of 9,000 words and 20+ pages. so it about doubles in length at this step.

i do most of my editing (switching certain lines and paragraphs around) as i write this first full draft of the chapter. so when i'm proofreading, i'm only ever checking for errors and seeing if i want to replace any words or phrases with a better idea. this last step usually doesn't take me more than a hour.

from there on, you guys are familiar with the end result! as a note, the "chronological events" and "short chapter outlines" are all fully completed for this story! i prefer to finish this level of planning before even beginning to seriously write. it helps me to lay the foundation for my plot twists from the very beginning of the fic!
