Here's a free opportunity to recommend a game that you love :)
I absolute *love* and adore Ikenfell. I've honestly been wanting to replay it ever since I first finished playing it.
You play as Maritte, a non-magic user, who is looking for her sister, an attending student at the magical school of Ikenfell. Weird things have been happening at the school lately, causing it to be on lockdown.
While sneaking into the school, you discover being a magic user (a pyromancer) yourself. Great - because there are multiple enemies out there trying to get you. Luckily, you get help from your sister's school friends to get down to the bottom of your sister's disappearance and the mysteries surrounding the school.
The combat system is both turn-based and timing based (though there are also accessibility options to completely disable this, or make it easier!) If i remember correctly the timing-based inputs both make your own attacks stronger and minimize enemy damage.
Cute characters! I remember a lot of them being queer as well!
Cute pixelart!
The music is composed by Aivi & Surasshu! (the ones from Steven Universe!)
GILDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
most importantly: I enjoyed it a lot!!!!!! that's it!!! That's the most important part of the recommendation! I enjoyed it!!!!!!!!!!
no wait i forgot this is even more important: YOU SAVE THE GAME BY INTERACTING WITH CATS, AND THE NTHE CATS MEOW WHEN YOU'VE SAVED THE GAME....................................

In honor of me having so much video game music downloaded on my phone that I ran out of storage and had to buy a new phone. My favorite track from each video game OST I have!
Bastion: Brusher Patrol (Such a bizarre clash of styles, I can't help but love this one. Shout-out to the part that sounds like Darren quietly scatting in the background.) (Also special shout-out to Build That Wall, probably my favorite vocal track in any Supergiant game)
Celeste: Scattered and Lost (I am such a normie for this choice but face it this track absolutely slaps.)
Chicory: A Colorful Tale: Song of the Wielders (I love how this song has actual lyrics but I still prefer to sing along with the Simlish version that Pizza and Chicory sing.)
The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood: Illusion (First of all I love how every character in this game has their own theme I go feral for that kind of thing. Kurielle is probably one of the characters who stood out to me the least but by god is her theme gorgeous. I love the vocals and how a later track includes a sneaky reprise.)
Cuphead: Dramatic Fanatic (Tap dancing :D)
There are literally thirty of these so I'm doing a read more
Death's Door: The Grey Crow (A heartbreaking boss fight scored with the appropriate amount of anguish)
Deltarune: Cyber Battle (This melody is so underrated and ya know what, so are the characters associated with it. Sweet Cap'n Cakes forever.)
Elsinore: Donne, The Boat Boy (I love this song because it's associated with Lady Guildenstern, aka the best character in gaming full stop, but it's also just a fun little sea shanty that I think they made up for this game so I love that. Also has a lyrical version.)
Evergate: Police (Okay so the level with the police drones is one of the more frustrating ones in the game but the music is hauntingly beautiful so I give it a pass)
Going Under: trust fall (Marv is easily one of the most hateable video game antagonists of all time but damn if his boss theme doesn't slap)
Hades: Last Words (The rolling and the tolling of the bells bells bells bells bells)
Harmony: The Fall of Reverie: Reverie Ascendant (Lena Raine does these medley tracks so good man)
Hollow Knight: Dung Defender (By far the catchiest song about poop on my entire phone)
Ikenfell: Rose Thorns (So the insanely long final boss fight against Oxley overshadowed Aeldra's boss fight in my memory for a long time, but when I watched another playthrough and bought the OST I realized "Oh her theme bops SO much harder than his ever could")
Inscryption: A Final Duel (A hardcore remix of The Scrybe of Magicks, aka one of the only melodic tracks on the album and therefore the one every YouTube video about Inscryption uses in the background. I prefer the epic version just a bit more because honestly that Magnificus setpiece is the best moment in the game)
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass: Fun, Sunny Day (A fun and silly track as the title suggests, elevated even more by the context in which it plays in the game. The area music alternates between this and the more somber Rainy Sunday to illustrate that Jimmy mother is bipolar [very cute and silly game])
Omori: Bready Steady Go (Like the absolute dipshit I am I actually completely missed the optional Orange Oasis when I played this game myself. Every Let's Player finds it somehow, though, and when they fight the Unbread Twins I invariably stand up and dance along to the boss music.)
One Step from Eden: Perpetual Motion (It's just a good-ass track y'all)
Ori and the Blind Forest: Conundrum (In a soundtrack of sweeping orchestral pieces, this more subdued version of theme that only plays during one small puzzle section might seem a weird choice. But I've always really liked it)
Ori and the Will of the Wisps: Kwolok's Malaise (Kwolok's leitmotif is perfect for a giant frog and the boss remix takes it to it's logical conclusion)
Paradise Killer: Go! Go! Style (This track makes me feel like I'm having a sugar rush. The whole OST does actually but this one especially)
Pyre: Path to Glory (It's just got a really unique vibe to it. I like it)
Scarlet Hollow: Avery (Chill and really beautiful. Avery themself is kind of a sleeper character at this point but I can't wait for Brandon to remix their theme when they get assimilated into a giant plant monster)
Slay the Princess: The Princess (Okay full disclosure I've only played this game once so I don't have the full context for a lot of the tracks on this OST. Maybe hearing them alongside their respective princesses will make me like them more, but for now the title theme is too iconic to beat.)
Sounds of Sympathy (the OST for the game anthology Essays on Empathy): Zen and the Art of Transhumanism (In the Essays on Empathy documentary, fingerspit talked about how she prefers writing obscenely long tracks so the loop doesn't get annoying. Unfortunately for her my favorite track on this album is only three minutes long. It's a lovely little bop.)
Spiritfarer: Mind Palace (I played Spiritfarer before any of the character updates were released, so I didn't get Daria's mind palace sequences in my game. And I mean, they look very platforming-heavy so I'm okay with that, but god this is a gorgeous piece.)
Transistor: Impossible (I think this is Royce Bracket's boss theme? I don't know when any of the tracks on this OST specifically play in game. Regardless of all that this one gets me pumped.)
Unavowed: One Man's Power (I couldn't find a video of this one, but it's gentle saxophone solo that plays when Logan Brown is introduced. I think it fits is character really well and just sounds really nice)
Undertale: Death by Glamour (Best song for best character, enough said)
Wandersong: Moonscape (God knows this game gave me a lot of great options to pick from, but I settled on this one because it's so uplifting.)

This is a good time to bring up one of my favorite games of all time.
IKENFELL!!!
A lot of talk about wizard school games, but if you want one that is not only written better and has a unique combat system, but also is inclusive as fuck, please go play Ikenfell. There are trans characters, gay characters, magic, neopronouns, a diverse cast, and it also has a classic pixel vibe to it. It also explores emotions and feelings and conflicts in ways that JKR couldn’t even dream of writing because, let’s face it, she doesn’t have a creative bone in her body.
Please go give Ikenfell some much needed love because, gods, I need more games like it.

Ikenfell
Tumblr media
After I looked at the community screenshots on Steam, I looked forward to play this so much. It looked so gay! And it is!
Tumblr media
Also it's was a very rough ride at the beginning until I got the main mechanic down and gained a few more characters to the party. See, there's a gimmick here in this (j)RPG/tactics game when you must press a button in the right time when attacking or defending. At what time? Sometimes even that is unclear. It got on my nerves sometimes, not a fan of this at all (you can turn this off in the menu and I did in the end, it was much less stressful that way). That being said, I have also praise for this one.
Tumblr media
Music (so many good pieces and the vocal pieces stole my heart!)
Graphics (love the PICO-8esque pixelart)
Complete ever-present queerness
Characters (lovable)
Story (I love a good mystery I'm thrown into)
Strangely, the vibe of the game, pixelart, chiptunes, dungeons, etc... strongly reminded me oldschool dungeon crawler games from DOS era for some reason, it was so nostalgic!
Tumblr media
It played nicely on Steam Deck, the lowres pixelart graphics suited it well. I finished in about 18 hours without side quests (and help with the timing in the battles at the end). As per tradition, I cried at the ending. Worth it.

Boycott Hogwarts Legacy
For those who aren't aware, Hogwards Legacy, an upcoming AAA title is being released this Friday, February 10th. Please consider joining your transgender siblings in boycotting its release - while you can separate the art from the artist in many situations, there are times when those artists, like JK Rowling and Kanye West, actively contribute to hate, violence, and anti-transgender legislation and it is simply not possible to separate art from the artist. Supporting Hogwarts Legacy during its release WILL back JK Rowling's beliefs and go directly towards her funding anti-transgender movements harming trans people in the United Kingdom.
Within the last month alone, JK Rowling has tweeted the following to her 14 million followers:
Describing trans women as men with "penises, male pattern baldness, and" r*pists, deserving to be forced into male-only UK prisons 1/30/2023
Stating it's "cruel, degrading," "torture" for cis women to share spaces with trans women 1/29/2023
"Deeply amused by those telling me I've lost their admiration due to the disrespect I show violent, duplicitous r*pists [ie. normal, everyday trans people]. I shall file your lost admiration carefully in the box where I keep my missing f*cks." 1/28/2023
Criticized gender-affirming care and puberty blockers for trans people 1/27/2023
Told a trans broadcaster to prove her woman-ness 1/22/2023
Advocated for hate speech and anti-trans protest 1/22/2023
Called UK politicians cowards for siding with trans people 1/11/2023
Your nostalgia does not justify trans trauma.
"But it looks so good!"
The game may look good because it's a well-polished AAA game, but the story itself has STRONG anti-Semitic themes - as the protagonist, you're tasked with stopping a goblin uprising and goblins of the wizarding world have been well-established as stand-ins for Jewish people. JK Rowling heavily based goblins in Hogwarts on Jewish stereotypes created by Nazis - Rowling has intentionally characterized her goblins as having big noses, working in banks, and known for being greedy. It's not a coincidence. Hogwarts Legacy has you play on the oppressors' side and prevent a literal slave uprising.
Don't buy it.
The people who worked on Hogwarts Legacy have already been paid - your purchase during its initial release isn't saving some starving artist, it funds JKR and makes her and her followers believe her views have value. Simply do not buy the game - don't donate a certain portion to trans charities and /then/ buy Hogwarts Legacy. By buying the game, you justify anti-trans laws and hatred - JK Rowling believes that her wizarding world is so amazing, so well-written that people will always support her no matter how anti-trans and anti-Semitic she is. Prove her wrong.
Don't stream it.
During the boycott, don't create or consume content supporting it. Creators on Twitch are already planning to boycott a mandated advert for Hogwarts Legacy that will play during ALL streams - even during trans and Jewish streams. The better content about Hogwarts Legacy does, the more people will purchase the game during the boycott.
Play alternatives.
There are PLENTY of other magic worlds to lose yourself in that don't fuel anti-trans hate and violence, like:
Witchy Life Story
Cozy Grove
Sun Haven
Potion Permit
Wylde Flowers
Potion Craft
Little Witch In The Woods
Ikenfell
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Slay The Spire
Tell Me Why
Songs of Glimmerwick
Wizard 101
Lawmage Academy
Elden Ring
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Spiritfarer
Witchbrook
Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
Switchcraft
Wizard of Legend
Potionomics
Hades
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Ikenfell was cute! It''s not super deep story wise but it's very gay and sweet. I really enjoyed the turn based tileset combat (even if it has some really fuckin weird mechanics that should be explained better imo).
Frustrated with how underutilized some of the characters are but it's a small indie game I got on sale so I really can't complain. It was a good experience, definitely worth trying.

showing solidarity with trans (and also jewish) people will literally never be as easy as it will be this friday. all you have to do is literally not spend money on another soulless AAA title with an empty world and endless resources to gather
other fantasy laden games with cool magic systems you can spend your  money on instead:
- dragon age: origins & dragon age 2 & dragon age: inquisition
- solasta: crown of the magister
- divinity: original sin 1 & 2
- soulsborne games (these are especially trans approved, literally just ask any transfemme gamer and they will write a novel about bloodborne)
- pathfinder: kingmaker & pathfinder: wrath of the righteous
- magicka 1 & 2
- avencast: rise of the mage
- ikenfell
- baldur’s gate 1 & 2 & 3
these are just some games from my steam library. all of these are a) much cheaper b) not a soulless copy-pasta of the AAA game recipe c) better written d) not directly monetarily funding one of the driving forces behind the genocidal transphobic scare we are witnessing all across the world, especially in the “progressive” west.
and just a reminder: “no ethical consumption under capitalism” is a phrase used to relieve the guilt people might feel when they are forced to rely on unethically produced products for SUBSISTENCE. your $70 luxury purchase has nothing to do with this.
and lastly: no, pirating isn’t good either. why do you so badly want to play a game that is just every nazi conspiracy theory about jewish people stuffed into a box with pretty packaging.
do better. or in this case, just literally don’t do anything.

I Just Finished: Ikenfell!
Tumblr media
What if, let's say, you liked the idea of a magic school where kids go to learn how to do all kinds of spells and shit, BUT, your not a fan of transphobia? Or, similarly, what if you like the Owl House, and wanted a game like that? That's Ikenfell, an indie RPG with lots of queer elements, fun gameplay and a pretty decent story as well!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The combat is Mario style, meaning that you have to press a button with certain timing during attack animations to make your characters more successful - usually either doing more damage or taking less. However, like many things in this game this can be tweaked to allow people who may struggle with this to still enjoy the game - the game has many accessibility settings, making the timing easier or just turning it off completely, allowing you to bypass combat entirely if you just want to see the story, and also giving content warnings about points throughout the game which would be pertinent to some players because the game does get into some shit.
The story deals mostly with themes surrounding adolescence and the troubles of academia, how friendships can evolve and fall apart and about 'gifted' people, especially in a world where some people have amazing powers and others don't. Interestingly the game almost makes a point to not have much in the way of discussion of queer themes - there are things I'm sure many queer people will relate to but the world of the game largely treats the queerness of the characters as completely matter of fact - somethings that's normal, which is fine, in fact, refreshing. Not to say I dislike more in depth exploration of queer themes, but it's always nice to have something that just is queer in a world where queerness inherently requires constant explanations. A character just using neopronouns without having to have some sort of aside to justify or explain it is nice.
Generally, the game is brilliant - there's very little criticism I can make. Although - there is one section, literally just one, that drove me up the wall: you need to walk around (while being occasionally attacked by enemies) interacting with random spots on the ground, backs of benches, trees - things that generally are just decoration - to find 6 stars to simply get to the next area. Yeah use a walkthrough for this bit it's not worth it.
The part that I find most interesting is the combat system, as I said a Mario system, but, also a very small scale grid base strategy, Kind of like fire emblem, but on a small corridor like map. This allows the game to be pretty simple in terms of what the characters do - they all tend to be quite focused - while also having a fair amount of depth to the strategy. A lot of RPGs can I have quite complex unapproachable systems - which when your used to can be a lot of fun - and Mario games go against this but are often too easy. Ikenfell strikes a good balance, being approachable in all ways in terms of learning the game and accessibility options - it feels like a game that (apart from one short section) WANTS you to play it, which I think is one of the best things a game can be.
A - Small frustrations make this not quite perfect - but close
2/3 - Both the accessibility options - which are becoming more common now but when this release a few years back that wasn't quite yet the case - and the interesting combat make this fairly unique and worth looking into.

If you had to pick an indie game everyone should know about, what would it be?
Hmm... that's tricky. Celeste would be an easy pick because it's the absolute best, but it's already decently popular...
Ikenfell is also really good, but fell off the radar pretty quickly unfortunately, so maybe that^^

what rpg....tell me....
ikenfell... it's really like. i need you to understand the progression of events i just went through.
like the entire plot starts off with, ordinary girl who doesn't have magic, trying to get to magic school because her sister is missing, right? what happened to her and what she was involved in is like the central mystery of the game
but instead of the typical "kind to everyone, popular, beloved, no one knows why she would go missing because she's such a good girl" kind of character that would usually be used for a "missing female relative" plot, the protag's sister is fiery! mischievous! teasing! always getting into trouble with her friends! and it's like, hell yeah! spitfire sister! way to defy the stereotypes and give her personality!
except.... we're given hints that... things might be off about our sister? like your sister's friends say that this blond rich rival just hates your sister for no reason, but the rival explicitly says she was just reporting someone messing around with dangerous magic to the headmistress. which is. something that is supposed to happen. and your sister laughs because there was no proof that she actually messed around with forbidden magic, so she wasn't punished at all.
and you start to wonder. is your sister a good guy?
because we know that she is messing around with forbidden magic. she's messing around with magic so forbidden that she has to put barriers and traps around her room so no one finds her. the barriers are magic so old that none of the students you meet recognize it.
so. what is so forbidden that she's so desperate to hide?
BLOOD SHADOW DIMENSION MAGIC.
SHE IS LITERALLY MAKING PASSAGES INTO A SHADOW DIMENSION THAT YOU CAN ONLY ENTER WITH BLOOD SACRIFICES. YOU HAVE TO ENTER THE SHADOW DIMENSION REALM IN ORDER TO FIND A CREATURE THAT'S STOLEN SOME OF HER THINGS AND IN THE PROCESS ONE OF YOUR PARTY MEMBERS HAS A PANIC ATTACK OUT OF FEAR OF THE FUCKING SHADOW MONSTERS IN THE DARK.
and like, after we escape from the BLOOD SHADOW DIMENSION REALM, we find ourselves in the home of the creature that stole your sister's stuff. it's described as a thing that creeps in the floorboards and shadows to steal people's belongings. and, uh
Tumblr media
it's a giant pink blob monster who talks like this.
the theme for the area sounds like fucking elevator music
the enemies in this area are pants

Top Games of 2022 (Part 1 of 2)
Happy new year all! It’s been a good 2022 for me for many reasons (started a new job, moved to a new apartment, and hit the 6k threshold for this silly blog, among other things), but in particular I was able to sit down and really enjoy a wide variety of new games.
I’m not always able to keep up with the latest releases, but this year I was able to trim down much of my back catalog and get excited to check out the latest from many studios, both old and new. So, in celebration of the new year, here’s a Part 1 of 2 of the games I’ve played this year.

Dawn of a New Year- 2023
Another passed dateline, another revolution, and other witty holiday-appropriate aphorisms here. Like a bolt from the blue, it’s time for my own year in review.
What’s there to say about the year behind me? Not much that makes it unique, but not every year needs to have some flagship moment to define it. It was enough to just be another length of time where mostly less than major stuff happened. I guess I get that impression because my situation in life is pretty much the same as it was this time last year, and it doesn’t show any signs of changing any time soon.
Like I mused on last year, it’s nice to have a place that feels comfortable, that works and provides well while being basically secure enough to stay in indefinitely. At the same time, it leaves me with the sense that ‘indefinitely’ can’t mean forever. There are other things I feel I have to move on to from here. It would be *very* nice if I knew when to move on, or even what those things I have to move on to are in a little more concrete detail. I feel it’s almost a risk of getting stuck in this security and not taking the steps to step forward, waiting for the right moment without realizing that it won’t get any easier until I start moving. All I can say is, the answer wasn’t this year. We’ll see what light that 2023 will be able to shed.
All that vague nonspecific concerns for the future aside, this was a good year. I spent a lot of time with the friends in my life who are so dear to me, in all their various arrangements. Spending time visiting in person friends, on call hanging or playing games with friends who are more distant. I’ve been part of the longest and most fantasy-epic-feeling DnD campaign I think I’ve ever been in. I’m even on other peoples’ streams sometimes, and some very cool streams at that. (Guess this is the part where I plug that, so, uh, here.) And my friends brought me on board for my latest fandom enjoyment by inviting me to our Owl House group watch.
I played some good games this year. I experienced the choice collection of Shimomura tunes in KH Melody of Memory, got to copilot a friend through my incredibly beloved Outer Wilds and its DLC, and partnered up for the incredibly how-has-this-not-been-thought of experience of TWEWY online co-op via Parsec. (I also checked out its sequel, which definitely lived up.) I took another friend through Return of the Obra Dinn’s deductive mystery after being wowed by it myself. Midway through the year, I found myself very charmed by Ikenfell, a game that does a *lot* of things right- I’d say it’s my recommendation of the year. Then to round out the last months I ended up *really* sucked into Splatoon 3 (at this point I’ve seen so many salmon, but I never get tired of it). And, wouldn’t you know it, I also had the chance to do the special run event with another beloved friend.
So I guess that’s the theme of this year, if I really had to put something down. I got to share so many things, so many conversations, so many experiences, with so many people. I know that people being in my life can change with very short notice (and this year bears witness, I saw multiple friend groups and communities undergo some painful restructuring before my eyes), so I don’t ever want to take their presence for granted. If you’re reading this, you the mutual reading this, know that I cherish you, you are dear to me, you are crucial to my online world being as enjoyable as it is, and I hope with all my heart for you that this new year has everything that you’re hoping to see in it.
To whatever the next year brings, I hope we all come out better for it. Ultimately, to be a little better and a little more improved each day is the best outcome I can wish for myself and the people I care about.
Happy New Year.

My live reactions to the Anti-Woke games list
TL;DR: go buy Ikenfell, Tactical Breach Wizards, Subnautica or Celeste!
For those of you not chronically online (lol you're on Tumblr, who am I kidding), a group has recently released a list of games containing "woke" themes. Obviously, I'm gonna link to it and suggest you buy one of the games in red, but here's my live reactions for you to enjoy under the cut. I swear to g-d these incels have the thinnest skin known to man or beast:
Bloons?? The fucking monkey balloon popping game???????? How… what. What even.
Hogwarts legacy is WILD given JKs descent into madness
Oh man I gotta reply Subnautica again, that game slaps
LMAO From Software stay winning, Miyazaki says this foot fetish is rated E for everyone
Cassette Beasts is completely unsurprising.
Wait, Cloth Hollow Knight was a lesbian?????? Where did that get revealed???? I love her?!
LMAO at Portal 2, these are truly the softest little boys imaginable
I don't think I've ever seen a straight Stardew fan; I can't believe it's not red
STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT IS INSANE LMAO????? Guess it's woke to acknowledge that women play video games
Hardspace Shipbreaker mention eyyyyy
LMAO at Spider Man MM. Once again, the thinnest skin imaginable
Yeah, completely unsurprised to see Celeste here. You go girl
DREAM DADDY MY BELOVED LMAO. My only contact with this particular piece of media is Arin promoting it in a Starbomb album
I don't know what “Hustle Cat” is, but I feel a need to find out
You're telling me a game called “Super Lesbian Animal RPG” exists and is woke? I'm shocked, truly
AMOGUS
How is The Outer Worlds not red? Did they miss the whole anti-capitalist theme of the game?? They're not just thin-skinned, they're also stupid (not shocking).
Ditto Armored Core VI; I guess it's missable but like you kinda have to try
Outer Wilds my beloved, I forgot that literally everyone all the hearthians were NBs
Wouldn't have expected a game called “Super Punchy Face” to be woke, but good for them
IKENFELL MY BELOVED. Yeah this game is queer as hell, it's also super indie so I'm glad they didn't miss it.
Yeah obviously vampires are gay. Come on now.
Huh, I hadn't considered No Man's Sky, but yeah I guess? Lol.
Every RPG is woke, shocking. I'm so surprised.
Again, could not be LESS surprised by Stephen Universe.
For one beautiful, shining moment, I forgot that Apex existed.
More gay vampires yeehaw
Age of Empires DE??? Wow.
LMAO do NOT come for Tales of the Shire like that and get your information wrong you dumb fucks; Tolkien LITERALLY described one of the races of hobbits as having brown skin. The lack of literacy is ASTOUNDING.
KOTOR stay winning
UNEXPLAINED DIVERSITY for No Rest for the Wicked, an early access game we know little about the lore of??? I'm deceased LMFAO
Ninja Pizza Girl sounds rad as fuck
Wartales is kinda wild ngl
NOT THE KFC DATING SIM IM DEADDDDD
Overcooked on the list???? For a disabled raccoon????????
Wingspan is insane lol
Another Crabs Treasure mentioned RAAAA
Oh shit Wizard with a Gun is woke? I'm gonna need to buy that
They missed Tactical Breach Wizards. Shame.
And the list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/0/d/1AVTZPJij5PQmlWAkYdDahBrxDiwqWMGsWEcEnpdKTa4/htmlview?pli=1#
