So the other day I walked in to a moment of tension between my husband and kid
It wasn't a fight but I could tell they were both getting frustrated and having trouble communicating but luckily I was able to jump in a mediate this time
The issue on hand was husband had asked Kiddo if they had fed the cat that day and Kiddo answered with "I don't know"
Kiddo is autistic with ADHD
To them just saying "I don't know" was an efficient and correct answer. They couldn't remember and it was in their mind better to be quick
Husband on the other hand felt dismissed and like Kiddo wasn't even taking the time to think about it
After talking it out with the three of us we got kiddo to understand that just saying quickly "I don't know" sounds to other people like they aren't really listening. They can still answer that they don't remember or don't know but they have to give indicators that they have heard the question and thought about it.
Examples for this scenario:
"I don't remember but I don't think so"
"I don't remember but maybe?"
"I really don't know if I did or not to be honest."
All those answers effectively equal "I dont know" but they show thought and that they listened
But tone and body language is important too
I'd you have a flat affect like me and Kiddo you have to put effort to make your voice and face more expressive (masking) and/or you need to make sure you're not saying it too fast (comes off as dismissive) and that you're looking at the person and not, for example, your phone.
If you're looking away from a person and speaking quickly and just saying "I don't know" people will think you're not really listening and be hurt and offended
I'm sharing this here because kiddo didn't know this until we had a conversation about it
Kiddo thought they were being more efficient at communicating because they were being fast and using less words. But we explained that efficiency in communication isn't about speed it's about being understood
Kiddo had some realisations from this conversation about why they were having communication problems with some of the kids at school
Anyway just a reminder that bad reactions to "I don't know" can in part be due to delivery and small changes can make it easier to communicate
This is not a fix for every situation where "I don't know" gets a negative reaction of course this is just a advice to help in some cases
And before anyone jumps on me for advising just the audhd person to change I also reminded my husband that Kiddo genuinely didn't know and that he was overestimating how much Kiddo remembered. He's also going to work on his assumptions in that regard
And for anyone wondering about the actual original question: Kiddo hadn't fed the cat. I had.

Rafe with autistic reader
Warnings: Suggestive content, innocent reader
Tropes: kookxpogue, sunshinexgrumpy
Summary: Reader is autistic.
Bree rants: Hi! So, I am only mildly autistic, so if I get any of this wrong I am deeply sorry. ALSO, if you're reading this, please help me work tumblr, I don't know how to make a taglist or boarders. Thank you- Also my askbox is always opened, so ask me random questions, I am always bored. Before I forget, I AM ADDING THIS TO ALL POSTS, AND IF I FORGET IT @brokenwingsgalore WILL PUT IT IN THE COMMENTS. IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, DONT READ IT!!! AND, if you want this to be a full oneshot, please tell me in the comments. I love you and enjoy reading!
(HOW DO I MAKE BOARDERS.)
Rafe! Who found you at his house in his party crying because everything was too loud.
Rafe! Who was about to yell at you but once he looked down, he felt soft and mushy.
Rafe! Who would continue to stare at you while you cry, not knowing what to do.
Rafe! Who finally speaks up and asks you if you need something. You shake your head no and he does not take that lightly. Instead grabbing you some water and sitting beside you.
Rafe! Who eventually finds out its because of how loud everything was and takes you up to his room. Topper whistles thinking Rafes getting lucky. Rafe tells him to shut up and you sit on his bed.
Rafe! Who would calm you down by dimming the lights and covering your ears. He thought this was childish but you seemed to have been calming down.
Rafe! Who would let go of your ears and ask you if you're okay.
Rafe! Who slowly finds out you suffer autism and your friend had brought you here to, "let loose." He would fight the urge to punch whoever that friend was.
Rafe! Who would yell at anybody who even talked near his room so you wouldn't have to panic anymore.
Rafe! Who would spend all night with you, letting you rant about your current hyperfixation just so you didn't have to pay attention to the loud party beneath you two.
Rafe! Who smiles at your little giggles and hand gestures. He hated when people would talk to him, but with you, everything you said sounded so luring. Even though you were talking about sharks.
Rafe! Who would drive you home and get your number.
Rafe! Who becomes obsessed with you after a week of getting to know you. Doing research on autism just so he could help you out like you helped him that night you met, he would've been fucking some girl he didn't like or smoke weed all night. Instead he found you.
Rafe! Who would ask you to be his girlfriend after two weeks.
Rafe! Who buys you anything you hyperfixate on. Legos? He's buying every set and listening you talk about the lego sets. Sharks? He'd buy you a mountain of plushies. Anything your autism liked for a few months or weeks, he would buy.
Rafe! Who never forced you to come to crowded places with. And if you do, he brings noise cancelling headphones or something for you to fidget with.
Rafe! Who practically almost murders anybody who says your too weird or something about your mental health.
Rafe! Who makes sure you eat all your meals, even if its krafts mac and cheese for the 5th time today.
Rafe! Who lets you sleep with him but gets annoyed when you have to put one of your shark plushies between you two. Though he would never tell you he was annoyed.
Rafe! Who ends up telling Barry random facts about the new movie you're obsessed with because that's all you talk about.
Rafe! Who loves you to death despite everything. He loves you and your hyperfixations. (maybe not the shark plushies though)

Autism Representation
I want to see more characters in tv shows with autism. Not the 'stereotypical' autism. I'm so tired of that. I want to see an actual character in a show or movie represent what it is truly like to be autistic. It's not "I'm autistic so I'm a genius obviously". Yes, some people with autism are very bright, but there's also negative things that come with autism that people over look.
Sensory issues. Things can be too loud, too quiet, etc. The slightest noise can make you go insane.
Hyperfixation. And I cannot stress this enough. It's all fun and games until you start to feel physically sick because of it. You HAVE to incorporate it into your daily life. It's awful.
Inability to detect sarcasm.
Getting overwhelmed by the slightest change of plans
There is a whole lot more that I could list, but I wanna keep this short. I just really want there to be accurate representation of autistic people. The most accurate one I've seen is Edward Nygma from Gotham. He's hyperfixated on riddles and puzzles, has a difficult time making friends, has a hard time understanding sarcasm (not getting jokes), and he starts to battle with himself. I want more of this. I want more representation for people with autism. It's no picnic and I'm so tired of everyone assuming that autism is a "gift because it makes you smart" like wtf no it is not. It's a disorder! Autism Spectrum Disorder. No one should feel ashamed for being autistic or feel outcasted. Yes, autism makes us different from others and yes it comes with hardships, but be proud of who you are for real. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL/HANDSOME/AMAZING/KIND/SMART/FUNNY/LOVED. Never forget how important it is to love yourself.
<3 I'm rooting for you and I love you all.

Allistics are all behind autistic people until you do autistic things that autistic people do like rehearsing facial expressions and talking to yourself and speaking in the "wrong" tone and not wanting to be touched and saying the exact same words that someone just said to you back to them and liking your stuff a specific way and rewatching the same episode of the same show 10 times in a row to self soothe and blinking too fast and verbally stimming or stimming at all and not having the "correct" reaction to things. Then you're "weird" and "rude" and "a control freak." It's all, "It doesn't matter that you're autistic as long as you're autistic in a way that is identical to how allistic people behave. I don't care as long as I'm never reminded that it exists."

Re-watching everymanhybrid, I found I'm Evans height and something clicked in my head so I started working out. If anyone ever asks me why I do, I can't wait to explain to them a short man from a slenderverse arg with mussels gave me enough gender envy to start.
Evan Myers is the equalivent of every short trans man and I stand by that.
