i would pay insane money to hear about your thoughts on ctommy girlism because it’s actually such an important part of his character analysis to me

I’ve been wanting to make a patreon for stuff like this + art I don’t wanna post, so I’ve decided to go this route with the essay I will likely end up with based on this thesis. But I’ll use this post to summarize some thoughts im VERY confident about (and could be a sneak peek into what else the paper will entail)

C!tommy is fem-coded based off of fandom interpretation and reception, textual evidence, and meta analysis (will get more into meta in the big doc).

To start, a lot of this coding has to do with how he is victimized and why, which mainly concerns him craving approval from these older men (c!wilbur, c!dream, and even c!techno,) that he views as role models. Power imbalances are something that can also affect boys, yes, but this is where the coding comes in to set them apart. PLEASE REMEMBER Coding is used to identify traits that align with minority experiences, both good and bad. That does not mean c!tommy is LITERALLY a girl. It is a tool utilized in rhetorical analysis.

In this case, the constant subjugation of c!tommy by the men he yearns to trust, and subsequent self blame and denial when they hurt him fit into an experience closely associated with misogyny, and to go even further into the meta, a misogynistic view of feminine victimhood. The way c!tommy’s trauma interrupts his psychological and emotional development is received by thousands of fans who still deny his abuse even happened as “annoying”, “mean”, and “just as bad” as his perpetrator(s). This is observed from the existence of c!dream apologists and sympathizers, and to a more complicated extent, c!wilbur apologists. But I digress.

C!tommy is coded as feminine because in the majority of media centering victims of this kind of abuse, the character is a woman, and a woman can and will always be blamed for what happened to her. In the case of DSMP, this blame comes from the man who is protected by the spoils of his privilege as an oppressor, status in his community, and the many other people (predominantly young women) he has managed to manipulate to be in opposition to his victim. Fiction affecting real life and all…. Which is why I think this evidence of coding is so important.

To add another disclaimer for the bad faith warriors, being a victim does NOT make a character femme coded, however, the way he is treated in canon and the way the fanbase reacts to how he grapples with the lasting trauma is certainly rooted in misogynistic talking points.

like look i know im a dsmpolo but it is genuinely really interesting to me to see people talk abt the dsmp like, "oh it wasnt meant to be that srs and mc roleplay just isnt that deep and" like no, it was? dsmp was lighthearted in a lot of ways, yeah, but it definitely had its more hard-hitting moments? it wasn't just written to be haha funny meaningless jokes all the way through? dsmp is a sum of all its parts, the fooling around and the scripted story and the improv roleplay and the carefully-constructed-months-in-advance plot beats. like dsmp was absolutely a very special server with a very special story that was, yes, minecraft roleplay and full of stupid silly moments and dick jokes but ALSO was absolutely meant to hit on some heavy topics and dark themes! like theres no need to give the fandom this much credit, lol, they didn't just hallucinate a story from a bunch of minecraft lets play content--they managed to hallucinate a self-contradictory, much worse story from the existing story that was literally right in their face for the sake of their personal biases and projection and then got mad at the dream smp for staying true to the story it was actually trying to tell instead of acting like a lesser conduit of the fans' wishes and sacrificing a cohesive plot for popularity points and views. like, don't get me wrong, the dsmp is far from perfect, there are parts of the story that i enjoy far more than others, and it definitely has its own flaws and weaknesses. but god damn if it's not still a story that affected a HECK of a lot of people (even if people might be desperate to act like they dgaf nowadays) while being, yes, a minecraft roleplay server

Selfishly, the thing I hate the most (besides what Wilbur actually did to Shubble and others) is the loss of a good chunk of the fanfiction/fanfiction authors in this community. Like, do you know how hard it is to find platonic content? It’s almost all exclusively romance! And don’t get me wrong, romance is fine everyone once in a while. But it’s literally just everywhere’s you look. This was the one place I could come to find platonic found family content, and now so many of the authors have just discontinued their works. The discord servers I’m a part of to follow authors for updates are opening up for romance/NSFW content. And I know, I know this was going to happen eventually. People had slowly been loosing interest in the dsmp anyways and it was bound to happen. But this just sped that process up. I just hate it. It’s sad to say, but this online space is the only safe space I had left and now it feels like it’s disappearing. I scrambled at the beginning of the announcement to download as many of my favorite fics as I possibly could before they got deleted. And it’s valid as hell that people don’t want to be associated with this fandom or Wilbur anymore. But like damn. Damn. Im so angry about this. Is it that hard not to be just a terrible fucking human being? I’ve already had abusers steal so many good things from me in the past, and now it just feels like it’s happening all over again. It’s just frustrating. Anyways, selfish rant over I guess. Feel free to just ignore this if it’s too much or whatever. For what it’s worth, thank you for what you did write for this fandom. “The stars and their children”, and “through a glass divine” are especially favorites of mine. I remember being so excited every time I saw new updates for them. Thank you for the good memories.

yeah believe me this was one of the things that hit me really hard. as a writer I've found so much inspiration from c!wilbur as a character for so many years now, and I've loved reading crimeboys fics for so long. the dsmp fanfiction community left such a lasting impact on the fandom as a whole and I'm so honored that I was able to make my mark on it while it was around. but yeah, while I myself had been shifting towards wanting to write romance again, I genuinely had grown to love writing found family so much and it really sucks that we're likely never going to see a fandom so heavily built around found family like that again

overall, yeah, the fandom was already dying. I've been aware of that for a long time and knew it was inevitable. but it feels cruel to watching the dying community crawling along on the ground get shot point blank in the head like this

I also get feeling selfish for feeling this way. I do too. but we're allowed to be upset, and I truly mourn all the wonderful stories that have been deleted because of this. I fully believe it's within the authors rights to do what they want with the story, it just sucks that they were so hurt by this that they felt they had to completely erase something they put so much love and effort into

I'm so glad I was able to provide good memories here, and like I said, I'm honored I was able to leave a mark on things. I won't delete my fics as I've said, so at least anyone who wants to reread them will be able to go back and revisit those memories

quackity made qsmp because of his experiences as a bilingual creator and his want to bring his two worlds together. He wanted to help break down language and culture barriers, which he LITERALLY DID ON THE FIRST DAY THROUGH THE WALL. I can't imagine a reason dream has for this other than...attention? idk. Everything about this screams that he just wants to do what quackity is doing but "bigger and better" and that misses the point of qsmp and, even if I'm wrong about his intentions, makes dream look kinda like a dick.

Oh, first-ever bilingual server? well here's the first MULTI-LINGUAL SERVER, which hinges on the technicality that 'multi' here means 3+, not 2+, even though multiple just means 'more than one'. But that technicality is bullshit!!! So, no, actually, QSMP is the first Multilingual server. Fuck off!!!!!

The addition of 'live translation' is iffy to me, I checked out his video on the mod just to make sure I know what I'm talking about and... yeah it's iffy at best. It's technologically cool, and I will give him credit for making a mod for this. However, that's not that much praise all things considered. Practically, you'll have to constantly be looking at other people's character's ALL THE TIME in order to have a conversation with them, which isn't feasible in a natural way. I'm honestly not going to say much about the translations themselves because I'm only fluent in English. However, I still highly doubt that his mod will pick up on any nuances and slang in a different language

Basically, it would have been better to not do this to not bother with a mod, and to encourage others to learn different languages LIKE QUACKITY DID.

Large servers with 60+ people and 6 leaders...so like they all get grouped together? What is this a shitty model un? And with the leaderboard, I want to laugh at the idea that this is a very very bad take on Minecraft Olympics. What will they score, achievements? How many kills someone can get in a tournament-style bracket? How many blocks mined? What on earth is 'language ranking'???? This is a server that already had multiple languages set on the premises of uniting there isn't a need for another gimmick? TBH im so baffled on this that I'm curious enough to not seriously talk shit on that part but that doesn't count for the next thing I'll rant about-

"with equal say in decision making"- First of all FUCK OFF /SRS. The biggest issue people had with the dsmp was that smaller streamers weren't listened to. They constantly tried to stream with others to get their storylines going, and yet nothing. It was also heavily implied that the main person ignoring everyone and not communicating well behind the scenes was FUCKING DREAM. First of all, as the main server admin, owner, and Guy In Charge, that's horrible management. Yet he's never spoken about it as far as I'm aware. He's never given a reason he's so unreachable. So, if I'm correct, that makes THIS COMMENT the first time he's mentioned the dsmp's shit communication issues and it's done in such a backhanded way I want to scream like YOU WERE THE ISSUE DREAM. It's just tacky, imo.

take this with a grain of salt, i'm Incredibly biased as JPV is like. My dc character. he's the Ultimate blorbo of blorbos. also, i'll sometimes switch between calling jpv jp or azrael, since they're a system, and sometimes the distinction matters.

but essentially, what you see a lot in fanon jason is: 1) relationship with bruce where bruce kind of. purposefully hurts him (on one end of the spectrum) 2) uncontrolable anger 3) a desire for bruce's acceptance like *really* bad.

it's my personal reading of jason ofc, but like. most of that just straight up isn't in the text. pit rage isn't canon, admitedly ignoring a couple of instances (cough rhato#25 and batman #138) bruce generally doesn't *try* to hurt jason and kind of tries to get closer to him, and jason like. it's changed throughout iterations, but his crusade began with the purpose of proving bruce wrong lmao. of wanting to be better than batman and spite bruce.

so just taking those, you look at jpv and you have: the fact that bruce only ever tries to either control or use him, the fact that azrael is usually a rogue agent (though not. azrael isn't murderous for Most of the Azrael title lmao. ppl look at knightfall and are like "oooooooh jpv killed so many ppl" when azrael literally Did Not) and is more violent than Batman tolerates, and the fact that JP KEEPS coming back to bruce because he really, really wants Bruce to care for him and accept him.

don't get me wrong, jason and bruce's relationship in canon is all kinds of fucked, but the specific way ppl write it (usually fanon ppl) is soooooo jpv and bruce.

also, like, if you want an incident with Tim in a place where he felt safe, Robin #7 where azrael chokes him in the batcave is Right There instead of taking Teen Titans #29 and twisting what happened there.

there's a post somewhere around of a powerpoint saying "why you should replace jason with jp in every fanfiction" and it's 100% a joke but also the way that some ppl write jason they'd honestly be better off lmao

I think it’s also because of the kind of culture that dteam fans have, where the dteam can do no wrong and are perfect little angels that can do anything.

Also I wasn’t sure who was doing the airhorns exactly, I’m really bad with loud noises and from what I’ve read people say it was George or George and dream. I was asleep and had things to do so I couldn’t watch any of the streams. Still it doesn’t really matter since it was incredibly disrespectful what he did.

So I don't personally think BBH is sticking to one religion or like mythology, whether that be Greek or otherwise, think it's mostly Greek but he's kinda including other things so it's personalized to his character and doesn't follow a single story line.

My like basic theory is that like. All of the shit going wrong with quesadilla island is either fully or partially being caused by him Because he's shown like as a character time and time again to be present/the cause of major disasters such as the sinking of Atlantis, when mt Vesuvius erupted, lmanburg being literally nuked, etc.

I think he's just like an ever present figure where there's a lot of death, or there's intended to be a lot of death

And he has mentioned quesadilla island has been a lovely vacation because he hasn't had to walk anyone over (paraphrasing but that was the idea) most likely because of the Minecraft respawn mechanics in universe being unique to quesadilla island for some reason. But I think it's unique to quesadilla island as opposed to him just not doing his job, because q!maxo has been confirmed dead and in yesterdays stream he did confirm that either he walked max across to death or he is aware of it happening, it's like a very consistent thing in his memory loss he's very sure about who's dead or alive he just doesn't remember anything about the people who are alive unless prompted or in lapses of sound mindedness

Low-key kinda love the special guest theory if my theorys true because that means they invited him and then we're like god DAMN IT what the fuck is HAPPENING and he's just like chilling out because this is normal to him 😭 might also mean we might get more major character death down the line whether this be from NPCs or actual players

hehehehheheh soooo in college i needed to write a fiction story for a writing class i was in and my brain was sooooooooooooo dsmp coded so i made ocs that were basically sbi but looking different (later cut down to just emduo ripoffs) and it was like abt a man who is immortal and loses track of time and like immortality is not common at all and a lot of ppl think drinking the blood of immortals will make u immortal so u cant really stay in one place for too long w/o raising suspicions n shit so this guy (elijah or philza lmaoooo) is going abt his life kind of feeling like theres not much a point when hes all alone all of his family has died and he doesnt really know why hes been cursed w immortality WELLL He hears reports of a man known as the ravager (the blood god) and hes like strong mortal men will come and go but he plans to just kind of keep his distance because w a name like that who knows what he’d do if he found out abt phil/elijahs immortality welllll many years pass phil/elijah has moved many times but hasnt really been able to keep track of how many years have passed wellllll he spots the ravager in a pub and hes like hmm i have seen that face before must not have been many years passed WRONG techno/wolf/the ravager/the blood god is also immortal and in his early years of learning abt it he didnt quite know how to cope and thats why he became a feared war lord but he realized he couldnt keep it up if he didnt want to out himself as an immortal anyways he and elijah/phil have a few encounters over the years and one time techno/wolf is like “ok birdbrain you and i both know whats up” and phil/elojah is genuinely confused bcyz he hasnt quite put the years together (he figures it out tho) and blah blah blahhahahahhahah i did end up writing it so that the oc version of it has them end in like a weird almost peaceful romance out in the woods of a snowy place far from civilization but uhhhh i want to rewrite it to ACTUALLY be phil and techno and maybe just end in their peaceful friendship i never actually did quite find an end so yeahhhh sorry that was a lot of text

this is a question ive always had a weird reaction to lol. but for the sake of ease ill say exile arc and pogtopia.

i like stories about darker topics that usually pertain to my trauma or that have something to say philosophically. that Tell me something New. ethel cain's preachers daughter and revolutionary girl utena would be some examples of the type of media i moved onto after dsmp.

this is why i would get so angry when theyd prove to the audience that they werent trying to Say anything. but at the same time its complicated and i think the story was told by the actors epistemologically. they had their limits when it came to being conscience of their rhetoric. And I'm not calling them stupid; theyre just normal people who dont think about social commentary a lot.

this story is rly uncomfortable to examine under a microscope or in a bubble, especially considering the allegations against that lying narcissistic sack of pus dream that are still being debated right now. but i think that's what makes me like these arcs even more. maybe like is the wrong word... i am fascinated.

despite what ex fans or dream stans might propagate, exile arc was about abuse. so was the ravine to some extent. it also included characters struggling with ptsd, and very odd yet scarily realistic protrayals of suicidal ideation (sometimes sans trigger warnings until midway through streams or NONE AT ALL ON MAIN CHANNEL VODS). these were handled in a way i doubt any media will ever replicate, and it's not for it's quality of writing, but for how interwoven the people are to their characters. parasocialism probably plays into this quite a bit, but i digress.

i feel like these arcs (let alone the overarching narrative) escape traditional categorization. the only genre i could ascribe it to is theatrical realism for its dialogue and subject matter. but thats wrong too because the events in the story are supposed to be literal, like the three life system and communicators, while simultaneously in Real Life being more.. metaphorical? its hard to explain. it really is a puzzle.

im not very smart, im an art school dropout with years of unresolved issues im still struggling with. but i feel very strongly about this subject. id love to hear what other ppl think about their "favorite" arcs.
