Oliver was broke; poor as a church mouse and he had no idea what to do. He could write to Uncle Clarence but that would mean admitting Clarence had been right about Papa and Oliver wasn't quite ready to reveal the lies he told in his letters back home.
What he needed was a job. However, it seemed like this godforsaken town had only two types of work for men like him: farm work or ranch work and neither sounded favourable.
So, he headed down to the inn to beg for any work. Fortunately, the young innkeeper's daughter was at the bar and with some luck Oliver was able to persuade her to get free room and board in exchange for helping out around the inn.
Still, he needed actual money, and so he took a trip to town, calling at all the shops he saw along the way but to his disappointment, he was met with constant noes. Chestnut Ridge, it seemed wasn't made for men like him.
C’mon Americans – Mid-term Elections ARE as Important as Presidential Elections -- VOTE…!
C’mon Americans – Mid-term Elections ARE as Important as Presidential Elections — VOTE…!
TL;DR / BLUF (because this is a L-O-N-G paper, last few pages is content from another paper)
VOTE! Get out and VOTE!
You CAN;
You SHOULD;
You MUST;
get out and vote if you truly value America and the continuation of ‘better’ values. We cannot just vote in Presidential elections and THINK that is all it takes. It is NOT!!! The mid-term races are the arenas where the least or worse…
Hmmm... very interesting to me that Taylor Swift is trending rn and yet for some reason no one in that tag is complaining that her trending is taking away from what's going on in Palestine and what's happening in Rafah. And yet for some reason, people couldn't seem to shut up in the Kendrick Lamar tag when he was trending about how the whole beef was just two celebrities beef (it's much deeper than that) and were making up theories abt how the whole thing was taking attention away from Palestine and everyone talking about it should feel ashamed of themselves (every single account I saw in that tag was posting about Palestine too).
And the thing that's really getting me is that Taylor is trending bc of a change to the Eras tour. An objectively unimportant change to make, especially when compared to what's going on in Rafah. But that's not what gets hate, no, it's the predator getting called out in an industry known for exploitation by one of the biggest artists in said industry. The racism isn't even implicit atp...
Edit: ok so just to clarify no this wasn't meant to insinuate that Taylor trending was some setup of Israel (that's just... like objectively wrong lmao), it was to point out that when it comes to a black artist in hip hop (a predominantly non-white genre) people wouldn't let fans of said genre just enjoy the music and shenanigans happening in that genre and that's it's hypocritical to act like people can't care abt two things at once, but they can enjoy their white "feminist icon" pop star (a much whiter genre) without anyone bringing hate into that tag. like i put in the tags, the anti taylor tag is for filtering bc i honestly don't see this post as particularly negative for taylor swift, it's a critique of the fans. and i'm calling out swifties particularly bc the ones who were saying that the beef was manufactured to take eyes off of rafah were swifties, and the ones being racist in the kendrick tag were swifties. i'm not exaggerating like almost every hate post i saw mentioning the beef being manufactured was a swiftie account. it is weird to act like people caring about very serious allegations happening in a genre of music isn't reason enough to make a big deal of the situation and go INTO THE TAG and complain, but it is especially hypocritical and frankly quite infuriating to see the same people who complained about a big deal of a situation being a "distraction" from gaza and then blog abt taylor swift . it's fine if u want to blog abt music u like, honestly idc abt that, if that's all u do then this legit isn't targeted at u, this is targeted at the swifties who came into the kendrick tag to complain and then went back to talking abt swift two seconds later like they weren't doing the same thing they were complaining abt two minutes before. (sry for the long explanation, but i just don't want ppl taking my words out of context and i rlly tried to word this all clearly, but idk man sometimes u think u word something well and then nobody undrestands wtf u were on abt so i wanted to make sure it was clear) also, if you're a zionist or israel supporter, i will be blocking u if u interact with this post. ok ty bye bye
“I’m not including duke because I don’t know how to write him 🥺”
He was introduced a decade ago, how have you not learned how to write him? Jon Kent was introduced AFTER Duke yet he gets FAR more attention from writers and the fandom.
I noticed years ago that this fandom has a problem with their POC characters where they’re either ignored, whitewashed, or villainized.
Both Damian and Dick are POC characters but this is often ignored or forgotten despite the fact that their childhood is shown with them having a connection to their culture. Other times they are both villainized for their actions against the white male characters in the bat family (specifically Tim AND Jason).
Duke is RARELY featured in any fan works despite becoming an integral part of the Batfamily. He’s been in a Batman movie (batwheels) and he’s been a focal point in the Wayne Family Adventures series (I’d argue the main character but I can’t say that)
What really pisses me off is that Jason Todd is glorified in comparison to the POC characters. In the comics Jason is NOT a good person, he literally kills people with no regard for how that will affect other people. He continues to try and hurt or kill his “family” members. His trauma is an explanation for this behavior but NOT an excuse, yet the fandom treats it as exactly that. There’s a whole deeper rant for me to give about my issues with how Jason is treated but the main point I’m trying to make is that Jason (a canon white man) is forgiven for all his actions despite showing no change and clearly not learning from them, but characters like Dick and Damian are not given any grace for their actions in a comic series from the 90s.
Can someone explain to me why Tim Drake would forgive Jason Todd, who tried to brutally murder and ridicule him, but not Dick who suggested he get therapy?
I’m tried of how Dick and Damian are treated by the fans of Tim and Jason but I’m especially tired of how Duke is completely erased from the family even though he’s been there for 10 years.
It’s so frustrating because this isn’t just in the Batman fandom or even just the DC fandom but EVERYWHERE, take a look at any show, book, comic or whatever form of media. Now take a look at how fans treat the POC characters. A few that come to mind for me are, Lucas from stranger things, Jal in skins, Sam Wilson, and I know some people might find it ridiculous but Ravi from Jesse (honestly his treatment among the writers and audience set the Indian community back).
There is such a simple solution to this problem, take the time to reflect on yourself as a person, think about how you felt about that one POC character that you thought was so awful. Think about what they did that made you feel that way and think about how you would feel if your favorite character had done the exact same thing. Knowing your bias is the first step to eliminating it.
It’s disturbing how, even in this age of weekly mass shootings, how soooo many white people have been groomed to perceive a visibly armed white man as less threatening than an angry unarmed Black man, and will treat angry Black people as an existential threat worthy of death
Innocent and unarmed Black men are seen as “dangerous,” while dangerous armed white men like Kyle Rittenhouse are viewed as heroes
Wow, I sure do love being a black, jewish fan of a TV series that's only un-reedeemed villains are a greedy, hook-nosed merchant that travels the world and a foreign black man.
didn't want to put this rant in the tags of that last post but honestly i feel like a lot of people hate toshiro disproportionately compared to what he actually did in-story. and if we're being real it's most likely because of racism
i have a friend who did actually become racist bc of woke, so is a thing that can happen fr
like you can say they were always racist but only by assuming some secret racist core and not by evaluating actual actions bc they went from openly correcting racist statements made in their presence even when fully outnumbered to casual racism and slurs and i’m like 90% sure it was bc of negative polarisation
im like crying on my knees begging for serirei people to have like a crumb of self awareness when they make serizawa dark skinned to not be making him small petite prettyboy reigen's like emotional support big burly top seme who exists to be hot and comfort him and that is it
There was/is a study by Joshua Correll that tested how skin color affected a police officer's decision to shoot. In the study, when the threat was white, the cops were so reluctant to shoot that they allowed the threat to harm them or others. When the threat was Black, they were much quicker to shoot. However they were so quick to shoot when the race was Black that they would shoot innocent Black ppl during the test. The study was/is called "Police Officer Dilemma." This "training" in this video is how it happens because we are a deeply deeply racist country.
Want to be a molecular biologist at Yale? Well, make sure you have a ten-step plan for dismantling systemic racism. When making hires at Yale’s department of molecular biophysics and biochemistry, faculty are told to place “DEI at the center of every decision,” according to a document tucked away on its website.
Meanwhile, every job advertised on the site links to a DEI “rubric” that tests candidates’ “knowledge of DEI and commitment to promoting DEI,” their “past DEI experiences and activities,” and their “future DEI goals and plans.”
The questions are designed to find out how they would infuse diversity, equity, and inclusion—a focus on race, gender, sexual orientation, and other categories of “marginalization”—into their work.
Applicants for professor and lecturer jobs, currently advertised on the site, will get “zero” points if they:
Have “no knowledge or awareness about DEI issues”
Do “not feel personal responsibility for helping to create an equitable and inclusive environment”
Were “not involved in activities that promote DEI”
Have “no goals or plans for promoting DEI”
But they are marked “exceptional” if they:
Have “clear knowledge of DEI issues”
Can demonstrate “strong interest in contributing to promoting DEI in teaching”
Have a “sustained track record of multiple efforts in promoting DEI”
Show a “clear and detailed plan for promoting DEI through teaching”
The assessment puts the thumb on the scale for those with progressive sensibilities. Scientists earn a high score in the category of “DEI knowledge” by showing they understand the “specific challenges faced by underrepresented minorities”—a criterion likely to favor those with a strong faith in the concepts of microaggressions, implicit bias, and systemic racism.
Diversity statements raise serious issues about free expression, and they also signal an ill-advised shift in priority—away from disciplinary excellence and toward social activism.
As one of the world’s most influential universities, Yale has popularized diversity statements. But they are finally past their expiration date. Yale should wield its influence and join MIT in putting an end to this misguided experiment.

This has literally nothing to do with molecular biology. It's a full-blown religious cult.
It rlly is getting genuinely scary & nervewracking 2 be transgenderedtm in public....like as a trans man theres not a day go by where somebody doesnt ask me abt my identity in some way. i can only imagine what its like out there 4 our trans sisters. trump made people more comfortable in voicing their vile, fucked up brainwashed ideas abt gender (&everything else) & its very clearly causing some insane political regression. now more than ever we need 2 find solidarity. stop assuming anything, be open 2 everyone, & fight hard 4 every trans woman u meet cuz theyre at the forefront of these latest attacks. these women are the people that the far right has in mind when deciding who 2 attack right now. i dont give a fuck what weird shit shes into, who she is, LOVE THE WOMEN AROUND U BEFORE ITS TOO LATE!!!!!
“Professional” white women have disrespected Angel Reese and told her to “shrink don’t shine” ever since she was in high school
“I was sleeping when she came into my bedroom at about 11:30, and she was really upset,” her mother, also Angel Reese, recalled. “Then she showed me why.”
The 17-year-old Reese had become unnerved after seeing comments about her on a social media post.
Overtime women’s basketball Instagram page had posted a video clip praising Reese on Tuesday. But that post prompted the user of the Instagram account of an opposing coach to send a direct message to the Overtime WBB page, criticizing Reese and claiming her success was because she was “genetically blessed.”
Chloe Pavlech, who curates much of the Overtime women’s basketball content, was going through the messages when she discovered the message:
“Celebrating a player (w god given height and talent) and zero humility or impulse control. As a female coach of female high school ballers, I find this behavior repulsive, unacceptable, unflattering and unnecessary. You can have swag while not acting like a punk. Highlight some other girls in the conference who aren’t as genetically gifted …”
Pavlech found a second direct message from the coach’s account in response to a different video in December celebrating Reese:
“She’s not the greatest player that’s ever come out of this area. She’s genetically blessed. And lacks any humility. Guess you haven’t watched the film of her…”

Pavlech found a second direct message from the coach’s account in response to a different video in December celebrating Reese:
“She’s not the greatest player that’s ever come out of this area. She’s genetically blessed. And lacks any humility. Guess you haven’t watched the film of her…”
The area that was whited out (by Pavlech) is the coach referencing a fight that Reese was involved in during a scrimmage last season against a non-league opponent, an altercation that earned her a three-game suspension.
“Angel had to apologize in front of the student body, and she’s played this year knowing if anything else happened she’d be off the team for the year,” her mother said. “People come at her, but she plays at a college level against high school girls. When she steps on the court she doesn’t hold back. She’s going to go at you until you sit down.”
Pavlech took a screenshot of both messages from the coach and posted them on her personal Overtime Instagram page (that post, as seen above, has since been removed). Pavlech included her own message at the top of her Tuesday post: “Why do women try to tear down young girls?”
“I was shocked that an adult — especially a coach — would be talking about a young girl in that manner,” Pavlech said. “The context of those remarks was also surprising; she was DMing in response to a very positive video Overtime WBB had posted about one of the country’s most gifted young talents.”
The direct messages came from the Instagram account of Lisa Smith, who, as of Thursday morning, was listed as the head coach of Archbishop Spalding High School girls basketball team. Later Thursday, Smith’s name had been removed from the site, with athletic director Jeffrey Parsons now listed as the current head coach of the girls team.
It’s important to notice that finding ways to minimize Matty Healey’s actions/words is a privilege that only those not targeted by his bigotry have. To be blunt, it’s an exercise of white privilege.
Since we’re not being intimately affected by it, it can be easy to fall into the denial based coping mechanisms of thinking “oh it’s a joke”, “it’s just his stage persona”, “that happened a while ago”, or “sometimes people change”.
Understand what it is that our subconscious bias does when it starts to spin like this. We don’t want to feel that bad feeling!! Analyze the selfishness of that. It is selfish of me and other white fans to brush aside these horrifically racist and anti-Semitic things that Matty has said just because he’s hanging out with Taylor. Why are we placing our extremely shallow comfort over the emotional and physical well-being of marginalized groups? Do you realize that swifties of color and Jewish heritage are not able to do that because it is literally their life? It’s not an option for them.
Not only does Matty need to be held accountable, but so does Taylor for at the very least ignoring what he’s done. So do many of us for being quick to minimize it for the sake of our own fragility.
I’ve found this article very helpful and utilize a lot of the strategies listed when having these sorts of conversations: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/01/03/opinion/art-denial/
Please give it a read and give your behavior some thought. It really is important to examine our own internal biases as they can culminate in so much racism being allowed to flourish unchallenged.
