I'm not watching ROP (Amazon boycott where I can, although AWS is half the internet so) so I'm only following distantly, but THANK YOU for you Aragorn and kingship post. It's one thing where even if I can buy into the high fantasy narrative of kingship by rights, I can never forget its real-life implications. I know the last book is literally named The Return of the King, but it's really worth questioning it and not forget that Gondor was actually fine without a king for generations.

Honestly, I can respect an Amazon media boycott when it's not blatantly about fandom shit more than anything else. So more power to you on that.

With regard to the post, thanks, and no problem! Tolkien walks a narrow and complicated path with Aragorn and kingship in LOTR, which is part of the reason it doesn't bother me more. But I can't deny that it does bother me, and all the more because Tolkien is so insistent on the Stewards' virtues and competence (very much including Denethor's) right up to the last ... two days? of their 969-year reign. In a way, that only makes the royalist reasoning more pronounced.

It took awhile for me to figure out why deposing a long-standing dynasty and instituting a different one for reasons of blood bothers me so much more than having dynastic rule in the first place. But yeah, "we're going to keep having basically autocratic rule because we always have" requires a very different sort of buy-in than actively changing a long-established government to the same sort of government but with a different guy in charge for legalistic primogeniture reasons.

Aragorn is only able to get away with this because of his personal qualities, heroism, popularity, etc, but he's only in the running at all because of firmly royalist (and patriarchal) rationales, and you have to accept those at some level for the mystique to work. And there are reasons that some of us can't do it!

Charles lightly grabbing Edwin's arm as they're walking to get his attention, as they've done many times before. Only this time, instead of dropping his hand fully away, he hesitantly drops it closer by, accidentally brushing Edwin's fingers. They both get that little electrical nervous system hum reaction. Without thinking about it, Charles impulsively finds that his hand has reflexively settled into holding Edwin's. It feels right, and he doesn't want to let it go.

Edwin wants to sputter "Charles--" but the name never leaves his lips. He is speechless, his heart beating in the closing space between their palms.

They keep walking together, hand-in-hand, looking forward, rather than at each other. Flustered, confused, mutually pleased.

Maybe they can get away with holding hands more often. It doesn't have to mean anything, right?

Mdzs modern AU where teen Lan Wangji keeps voice recordings of himself confessing his love to Wei Wuxian, but never sends them. Wwx runs away from home & disappears for 13 years and Lwj searches for him while recording all his feelings. Maybe he keeps all of these recordings in an old MP3 player or something idk, and just, abandons it in his old house when his family moves into a new big one. And maybe one day coincidentally Wwx moves into the same house, finds the player and finds out that his first love, has been loving him back all these years, and maybe in some of the recordings, Lwj talks about how he has been writing a song for him, and that he has already decided the name of it, and in the last one, he hums the song, but doesn't say the name of it. And Wwx frantically searches for Lwj everywhere and when he finally finds him, after 13 years, the first thing he says to Lwj when he sees him,

"You didn't tell me the name of the song"

And Lwj just, freezes, not yet comprehending anything that's happening, except the fact that the love of his life is standing right in front of him and asking him a question about something he could never know unless a miracle happened, but somehow uttering the word,

"Wangxian."

The rest is history.

this is super random and unprompted but.... one of my fondest memories is when i was in high school and became super unwell from a PE class, my friends literally had to drag me to the infirmary. it was also a class right before lunchtime, so they bought food from the cafeteria for me. and when i couldn't eat any of it, they bought me hot tea with extra sugar and stayed with me throughout recess to make sure i was ok.

i miss them.

this culture we've created around accusing someone of [Bad Thing] without proof is going to lead to someone's death. i'm genuinely surprised it hasn't already. to be clear, there's nothing cruel or unjust about asking someone to validate their claims against someone else, especially when those claims are severe (racism, rape, queerphobia, etc). treating the demand for truth as an admission of support against an alleged aggressor instead of regarding it as what it is (fact-checking), is so deeply, deeply sinister. do you know how easily implicit trust is exploited? do you know how easily false accusations can be lobbied at queer or bipoc people? and how hard it would be to fight those allegations, given the fact that these individuals would be minorities fighting within a system stacked against them?

yes, you should believe survivors. i am a survivor. but look at history, look at cases like emmett till where false accusations were lobbied at an innocent party and tell me the truth, or demands for truth, are cruel, unjust, or inhuman. innocent until proven guilty is such a crucial rule of judicial proceedings for a reason. and this culture that says demanding proof, demanding truth is wrong, or [x]-apologism is sooo dangerous. so dangerous. i can't believe more of you don't realize this.
