So. I don't know if y'all know this, but there's a serialized HP ripoff made by a small Indonesian production (and afaik no money went to JKR) and I have watched the first 4 of 40 episodes and. God. It's fucking hilarious. Everything is localized, the CGI is atrocious, and tbh I spent my time watching it either cringing or wheezing my lungs out. It's definitely entertaining. Is it plagiacy? Perhaps. Does it incovenience anyone (the og creators)? Eh, I doubt that. The production is just way too small and cheap to do anything.

Anyway, I want to and WILL talk about it below the cut. (Mostly screenshots)

1. Characters

Since all of them are renamed with Indonesian names, I'll write them down and I'll use those renamed version to talk about them.

Harry = Alfa

Ron = Rey

Hermione = Vega

Dumbledore = Aldebaran

Hagrid = Megantara (Gantara/Tentara)

McGonagall = Agni

Snape = Purwa

Malfoy = Tommy

There are more characters ofc but these are the prominent ones.

2. Screenshots I took (DISCLAIMER: I watched it with 360p quality so the screenshots honestly look trash)

This is Megantara going into Alfa's house to bring him to Bineka, the magic school in this series. Since Alfa's aunt slammed the door on his face, he lets out a magical burp that blows the doors off their hinges. They hit Alfa's aunt and knock her unconscious. Shit's hilarious.

Anyway, this is one of the many localization in this series. Basically Alfa is asking permission to go by pressing his uncle's hand to his forehead. It's a gesture of respect for older people here.

Also, the uncle is supportive in the end. Though where tf is Alfa's cousin I don't know. He was in a scene at the start.

Instead of a magical alley, we got a traditional market. Instead of a wand shop, we got a fruit vendor. Instead of a British old man with cryptic talks, we got an Engkoh-engkoh (Chinese uncle - a way to call a Chinese shop owner if he's a guy). Instead of an elegant and over the top wand-choosing ritual, we got Alfa choosing fruits at random and hoping one of it turns to a wand. He got his from a banana. I think this is W.

I love them 🥺 Megantara has the vibes of a country-crosses uncle that always brings back treats for you

First of all, the uniform is so cute I'm SO going to make a fanart of them all in it. Second, the KIDS!!! They're so round. Vega's accessories are kind of clashing, but she's a kid let her be

What I like about Purwa is that throughout the 2 episodes I have watched, his expression is ALWAYS a tired, confused one as if he's always out of the loops. I don't know what his problem is, but I really appreciate this "... ha?" face.

Hi! I just saw your post about Caped Crusader and the problems with the way they handled their characters who are poc, specifically when it comes to 'diversifying' formerly white characters by giving them the MAWS Lois treatment and not really bothering to actually think about how being a different ethnicity would affect them (btw why is CC Flass a black man?? Flass, out of all the cops??? really??)

So I wanted ro ask if you ever talked about how Batman: Unburied/ Secrets in the Dark handled this? (Including the spin-off here since Unburied doesn't actually mention anything about what the characters look like despite the casting choices implying intentional changes in that regard)

asdfasf I hope we normalize saying "giving them the MAWS Lois treatment" because if that ends up being my legacy I'd be happy. Yeah I have no idea why they picked Flass of all the cops to be Black specifically. Like sure Bullock is the bumbling guy but he has more potential as someone who gets taken advantage of and is famously skeptical of Bats.

I've mentioned Batman Unburied a lot because I adore it! But I haven't really talked about it, and for Secrets in the Dark I haven't listened to it yet (I'm deep in scripting work and I've been saving video essays + podcasts for my eventual comics grind so I'm very behind on that stuff). While yes, in Unburied characters don't clarify explicitly in the dialogue of the podcast what their race/ethnicity is, I consider Unburied to be a case of "race conscious casting" as opposed to "colorblind casting"- because it isn't just Bruce that's Black this time, both his parents are casted that way too. And you feel that attention given to other characters.

Unburied has a special place in my heart as one of the few Batman media that is 100% ACAB. You could argue Battison 2022 is anti-cop as well, but it's more like "the cops are corrupt because they're associating with the mafia, Gordon is the one good cop" [they emphasize Batman saying this even] instead of "cops are corrupt because the police system is inherently corrupt". In Unburied, when Barbara says "that's Gotham for you", Bruce responds "that's cops for you." Jim Gordon is kicked out of the police, and it's clear Barbara just ends up going through the same thing her father did, and gets kicked out as well. I love Riddler telling Babs that she's too good to be working for the cops like he gets it. So yeah, I love Unburied and I can't wait to listen to the sequel series! The only thing I don't like is Winston Duke's Batman voice. Too much bear growl. His Bruce voice is excellent though.

Marvel MCU movie (or is it tv series who cares) Secret Invasion uses AI for their intro trailer

That is the movie senior concept artist speaking up against it

The artists who worked on the movie have nothing to do with this

The intro trailer is outsourced to a different studio because the director Ali Selim think it's a cool thing to try and claim to know nothing about AI

ScreenRant of course missing the whole point and claim that the trailer is clever because it's like the skrulls disguising themselves as the real people just like AI disguising themselves as real art

Update: ScreenRant has since edited their title to remove the word "Clever"

This kinda thing doesn't just happen in the US

Korean game company Rayark let go some of their artists for AI to mix real art with AI

Indonesian movie production Falcon Pictures uses AI to create their movie posters also for a movie based on a Line Webtoon
