So I’ve been watching clips of the beetlejuice broadway play and I’m not a musical kinda of person but it looks so good that I wanna see it but I can’t because that’s in a different country so I did fan art as one does xD
I've been inspired by @ofliterarynature to ask Bookblr for help with unhauling some of my TBRs. If you reblog this poll, feel free to explain your choice. I'd even be happy to hear your reasoning for why I shouldn't toss a certain book, as it might encourage me to get around to reading it.
I've copied the book blurbs below the cut for your consideration.
Ink by Alice Broadway
From the second you're born, every achievement, every failing, every significant moment are all immortalized on your skin. There are honorable marks that let people know you're trustworthy. And shameful tattoos that announce you as a traitor.
After her father dies, Leora finds solace in the fact that his skin tells a wonderful story. That is, until she glimpses a mark on the back of his neck . . . the symbol of the worst crime a person can commit in Saintstone. Leora knows it has to be a mistake, but before she can do anything about it, the horrifying secret gets out, jeopardizing her father's legacy . . . and Leora's life.
We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia
At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run her husband's household or raise his children, but both wives are promised a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class.
Daniela Vargas is the school's top student, but her bright future depends upon no one discovering her darkest secret—that her pedigree is a lie. Her parents sacrificed everything to obtain forged identification papers so Dani could rise above her station. Now that her marriage to an important politico's son is fast approaching, she must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society, where famine and poverty rule supreme.
On her graduation night, Dani seems to be in the clear, despite the surprises that unfold. But nothing prepares her for all the difficult choices she must make, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio. Will Dani give up everything she's strived for in pursuit of a free Medio—and a chance at forbidden love?
Bride of Clay by Markus Zusak
The breathtaking story of five brothers who bring each other up in a world run by their own rules. As the Dunbar boys love and fight and learn to reckon with the adult world, they discover the moving secret behind their father's disappearance.
At the center of the Dunbar family is Clay, a boy who will build a bridge—for his family, for his past, for greatness, for his sins, for a miracle. The question is, how far is Clay willing to go? And how much can he overcome?
Blurb: There are no secrets in Saintstone. From the second you're born, every achievement, every failing, every significant moment are all immortalised on your skin. There are honourable marks that let people know you're trustworthy, and shameful tattoos that announce you as a traitor. After her father dies, Leora finds solace in the fact that his skin tells a wonderful story...that is, until she glimpses a mark on the back of his neck: the symbol of the worst crime a person can commit in Saintstone. Leora knows it has to be a mistake, but before she can do anything about it, the horrifying secret gets out, jeopardising her father's legacy...and Leora's life.
Another of my favourite books is The Ink Trilogy by Alice Broadway.
In Saintstone live the marked, people who have their life on their skin in the form of tattoos. Everything you do ends up on your skin. One of the marked is Leora Flint. She aims to be an Inker, who marks people's skin with their life stories. Until one day she sees a public marking, of a criminal named Connor Drew. He is inked with the mark of the forgetten, the crow, meaning that once he dies his skin book will be destroyed. Leora suddenly remembers that her recently deceased father had a mark like the crow, and suddenly everything is turned upside down and Leora is left questioning everything she once believed to be the truth, even her family and where she belongs.
She discovers the truth about Saintstone, the Mayor Longsight, the marked and the blank. And herself.
The first book is called Ink, followed by Spark and then finally Scar.
It's definitely one of the most original and exciting book series that I ever read. I haven't come across any books like them. It's filled with plot twists, as soon as you become normal about one you're pmslapped in the face with another two like a sack full of bricks. And unlike most fantasy books, there is romance, but the story is not focused on it.
This week I finished the painting I was working on in my last post and I continued playing around in the fun too!
I played with the new inks (see also my last post).
I made postcards for friends with these 2 inks as seen on my Substack newsletter. As you know I see art as a way to connect with people.
Playing in my sketchbooks is a way to explore and experience new art supplies as well as my…
The California State Fair is back! Sacramento has been the permanent home of the State Fair since the 1859, but it has been held at a lot of different locations around the city.
In May 1854, the California State Agricultural Society was founded. The State Legislature created the society as there was a growing incentive to promote agriculture as the longstanding future for California, rather than mining. The society was authorized to hold an exhibition of livestock, manufactures, and productions. Later that year, on October 4, the society held the first California State Fair in San Francisco. A different city hosted the State Fair each year, until Sacramento became the permanent location in 1859.
Within Sacramento, the State Fair moved around over the years. From 1909 to 1967, the California State Fair took place at the State Fairgrounds at Broadway and Stockton Boulevard. On July 1, 1968, California Exposition (Cal Expo) fairgrounds opened as the new home for the California State Fair. You can check out the State Fair from July 12th to the 28th!
In this video, Jared letterpress printed a hand carved woodcut from the Lewis Winter Collection that was made about 125-130 years ago. This woodcut depicts a cow, one of the many farm animals you can see at the State Fair. Lewis Winter submitted many engravings for competition at the State Fair in the early 1890s. The text below, set in 24 point Caslon, states, “The CA State Fair is back!” This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852.
