Inspector Gadget headcanon: Gadget’s hair

I’ve been watching more of the 80s Inspector Gadget cartoon and I think there was a moment or two where we caught a brief glimpse of what’s underneath Gadget’s hat, and he is definitely not bald. Which lead to more random headcanons because it’s just too hot to do anything else.^^

Gadget isn’t bald but because he almost never takes his hat off in public a lot of people just assume he’s bald. There was even a betting pool among some of the officers at the Metro City PD station what was under Gadget’s hat. Quimby found out about this and was Not. Happy. and quickly put a stop to the rumors. While some gadgets do emerge out of his hat, others like the Gadget ‘copter are part of Gadget’s body and he still has enough self-awareness that he tries to hide the more obvious cyborg parts of himself underneath his hat and coat. Which is also why for many years Gadget wouldn’t even take his hat off at home.

Penny knows this, of course, but doesn’t say anything. Gadget knows Penny knows. It’s something they don’t talk about but that’s okay with Penny. She knows her uncle better than anyone and knows Gadget is more aware of others’ opinions of him than he lets on. He may be clueless and oblivious at times, but he’s not stupid. 

Gadget’s hair isn’t synthetic either. While the accident (an explosion in my headcanon, ‘cause no way the banana peel story was anything other than a white lie) left Gadget with severe burns and burnt away almost all of his hair, Professor Von Slickstein was able to formulate a chemical that repaired the hair follicles and allowed Gadget’s hair, along with his eyebrows and eyelashes, to grow back naturally.

His fellow scientists initially balked at this, arguing it was a needless extra expense when synthetic hair would be fine. But Von Slickstein ignored them, insisting that the least they could do is give Gadget the most human appearance possible. The chemical treatment did work, almost too well, because Gadget’s hair, naturally wavy, grew back even thicker than before. When Gadget does remove his hat, it’s only when he’s at home with Penny and Brain. Same with his coat and gloves. He usually has a bad case of hat hair and keeps it a bit longer than police regulations allow because it’s so wavy. If he cut it short it would stick up all over the place.

And on the rare occasions when Gadget is ill or injured and unable to deal with his hair (he’d much rather just stick his hat back and be done with it), he’ll let Penny comb his hair out after a shower. Penny secretly wishes Gadget would leave his hat off more at home because she likes running her fingers through it and knows Gadget finds it just as comforting as she does. He looks younger with his hair naturally flopping over his brow rather than smashed back from his face but Penny keeps her silence because she knows how sensitive Gadget is about his appearance. And while Gadget will never say so out loud, he’s always deeply touched that his niece wants to take care of him. His scalp is more sensitive than the rest of his synthetic skin and Penny is probably the only person he’d be so vulnerable in front of. 

One time when Gadget had woken from a horrible nightmare and hadn’t been able to pretend he was fine, Penny had sat with him, stroking his hair in the same way Gadget has done when Penny had been small and sought him out for comfort after her own bad dreams. No one else is given such deep trust by Gadget, not even Professor Von Slickstein.

I actually found a picture that looks very close to what I think Gadget’s hair would look in real life, even the parts that stick out at the sides.^^

(And yes, I’m way too deep into this show and these characters but I don’t care.  XP).

Overall Info

They were both created by Penny, but not just to be extra defensive weapons for W.O.M.P. ; if anything, Penny found it to be a good excuse to add some extra members to the family.

They’re the twins of the family!! (Fidget only being 30 minutes younger technically due to the early testing & waking was done on Digit first)

(Speaking of, once they were tested in a small room for their first 1 on 1 meeting, Fidget introduced himself to Digit using morse code..he was still very unsure which language was his default)

Although they have the data to know every language, some of their mains are as listed: English, Español, Français, Sign language, Morse code, and Binary code.

(They like to scare Nozzaire sometimes with them knowing french)

Aside from most of their traits being taken off by Gadget, they both have they’re own unique personalities that bounce off of each other naturally.

This was given to them via a unique AI chip she created personally; making the robots being able to feel. One chip has much more intense power than the other, making them individual.

She also downloaded them with as much old & recent info she could by the time they were fresh, giving them a mouthful of knowledge all ranging from history to pop culture; a century full at best.

Because of this, they have the mentality of 20 year olds (Ranging from 20 to 25) having them act reasonable when needed, and a little immature when overwhelmed.

Both robots are agender!!

Digit believes since they’re not human they aren’t as deserving of being put under a specific umbrella; even with pronouns given to them.

Fidget also feels they don’t fit under certain categories, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t embrace it. If anything, he’s the most to experiment with different clothing whenever given the chance.

From the beginning to the end of GATG, their skeleton has been updated CONSTANTLY for some sort of improvement. With extra tweaking being done as well from another character (wink wink), this is what their functions look on the inside for now.

The main middle surface has been heavily influenced from “The Ultimate Weapon”, where the aftermath has left Digit overwhelmed with a system like that overall, while Fidget still thought it was extremely stimulating.

(Digit still finds Fidget really gross for liking to eat)

To replace the stomach, a little storage cabinet was built inside Digit for a much comfortable fit; in addition giving him more room to collect random objects.

Fidget on the other hand got a whole update to the first stomach model; it now consisted of an elastic bag filled with much stronger acid, stronger than a humans at least (Battery acid). The size of it has increased as well, a request from Fidget really so he can spend more time stuffing himself without feeling discomfort.

Cushions are for extra defense around their gadgets & differentiating middle areas.

(The cushions and middle hatches both have separate openings, meaning the cushions can act like “skin” whenever it’s only the hatches open)

(Fidget enjoys having his stomach rubbed because of this)

(It’s also better defense for Digit overall if the cushions so happened to break if the evidence is spiked. 2 layers is honestly like a backup for him)

The smaller storage unit was implemented from “Claw’s Collection”, basically a little area where the gadgetinis can store small objects such as magnets or chip pieces.

The Danger sensor evolved more into a heart chip for them, taken from “No Such Thing As Ghosts”, usually from it intensifying whenever the both of them stumble upon something “frightening” & what not.

The speakers are a way the gadgetinis are able to take in and hear information: from them being hunks of metal to begin with, they don’t exactly have proper ear drums..Fidget experiences a lot of distortion from one of his speakers being loose though.

The Poison/Gad identifier & AI chip’s are just fun additions!! The chips giving the gadgetinis more “realistic” interactions, and the identifier making it more easy to see if something’s been spiked or if the air was being poisoned.

(At least thats a easy way 2 make sure their stoves don’t explode)

They’re body parts consist out of heavy metal, and water proof wire coating. This makes them both bullet proof indestructible to water..they still don’t dare to breathe water in due to the risk of their circuiting inside.

But even with these in mind, they’re still at huge risk if they ever get electrocuted, or overheat. They’re circulating can easily go haywire, and have them be broken for a good while.

They both weight 300 pounds respectively (Fidget only weighing 35 more) from all of the wiring & metal connected,,no way would they weight lightly.

(No way IN HELL am I listing off all of their gadgets,,,they showcase a new one every episode & that’s a whole different list on its own. I can say though all the main apartment’s are in they’re arms, legs, hat, and middle)

To start off, he focuses more on the role of being a robot more intensely than his brother.

Maybe a little too much as well..he’s extremely insecure when it comes to failure or flaws within his work or actions overall.

(He’s the type to sit and ponder on situations that don’t go as good as he hoped; not reacting as intense physically, but would probably stay quiet for a good couple of days until he feel the needs to vent.)

It’s a main reason why he bickers about Fidget & his “human” feelings, a self indulgent problem.

He bases his whole personality off of being servile, so showing or feeling genuine emotion has him think he’s imperfect in some way; easily beating himself over it.

(He’s probably envied another robot & their strengths before.)

Him overthinking about it in general also has him thinking it’s something he shouldn’t be doing, so he usually masks it with a nonchalant, strict, or sarcastic attitude.

With these attitudes he’s started to like the feeling of being praised more often, but he never gets selfish about it..he just gloats a lot.

Even with this in mind, he’s still extremely loyal whenever it comes to anyone in his family.

He cares for all of them an overwhelming amount, and doesn’t back down on cheering up or caring any of his family members. Seeing them happy always put him in a better mood overall.

If ANY of the Brown/Gadget family was put under any danger, he comes quick to serve to destroy anyone and anything putting them in a terrible position.

This makes him a good parental figure at best, having him watch & look over anybody underage and or untrusting for wanting to do something “dangerous”.

Because he’s quick to serve, he never says no to any request he’s given..professionally/forcefully speaking.

If a dumb enough of a request was given to him he’d probably turn it down (Or if it’s just something he’s unable to do)

Even if he keeps himself together, he can be easily more frightened than Fidget if you time it right. He never admits to it even if someone tells him about it.

This also plays into the fact he’s EXTREMELY sensitive to loud noises. Even if he knows it’s coming, it hits him like a truck with how overpowering the echos are in his ears.

This doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy metal/rock all that often..preferably nothing heavy, but still “dark” enough on a pop fan’s ear. This is one of those moments where he excuses how loud the music can be.

He gained a small habit of collecting things from the extra storage compartment, usually being specific items every time he’s off collecting.

This hobby is usually kept private, but he doesn’t mind showing Fidget some of the small trinkets he’s collected & infodump about their differences.

He likes to infodump to Fidget about random stuff overall, he really enjoys seeing him getting as intrigued as he is with his own hobbies & interests.

Digit’s a Aroace Homoplatonic (Or however you’d call a aroace gay person,,)

He never truly understands the appeal of love, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t interested in getting in a platonic relationship of any kind.

In addition to him not feeling “attraction” to anyone feminine, he usually gets more intrigued in a person if they were as professional as him so they have something to bond over.

Fidget on the other hand thrives off of his emotions; he doesn’t think much on profession, & overall he’s just having a fun time!!

It’s strangely beautiful for him to not have anything natural to a human but still feel certain pains, emotions, and strengths as would a human.

He isn’t scared on showing whatever it’s feeling; maybe it being pain, hunger, sadness, excitement, he’s gonna show it one way or another.

He’s also the more dramatic and or teasing character, although it’s all in good fun if he’s poking fun at someone close.

He does get a little insecure about his feelings whenever Digit says something on him being unable to do something, but it’s like a small sting he’d feel for a couple minutes.

He usually processes negative emotions more intensely, making a whole fit during the moment until he eventually gets over it.

This doesn’t mean he isn’t emotional, Fidget is extremely sympathetic & worrisome overall.

Usually his mind goes into areas that’d seem silly to scare himself over, but there are times where he uses those feelings for anything more “heavy”.

His brother is a good example of this, with Fidget feeling terrible over Digit giving himself such a strict mindset for as long as they both could remember.

Speaking of, Digit is a huge role model to Fidget aside from the lieutenant. Most of what he dose he’d always think what Digit would do or say in the situation.

(Mostly it’s just a bunch of funny bits where he’d get reminded of how comedically sarcastic he can be)

This is another reason he feels so awful on him beating on himself over the smallest “flaws”, Fidget doesn’t care how Digit acts because he’s apart of family. No matter how he was he was still going to care for him equally.

He does try & get a little bit out of Digit once in a while, usually starting as a fight & them slowly turning into them both comforting each other.

Fidget is scary good at comforting whenever he isn’t in a panic, maybe it’s just a certain tone he uses, but if he’s trying to cheer someone up their in good hands.

If he is in a panic or rush, it’s gonna be really messy with whatever he says; really it’s him trying to find the right words he can’t see.

(He’s the silly one of the duo! Someone’s gotta do it!)

Fidget’s equally loyal about his family as is Digit, but he dose get a little scared at time of what they may be facing off. Piss him off enough & he’ll get just has defensive IF NOT MORE than his twin.

Even then he’d usually be in the one in the trouble..if he ever needs to save someone outside of the lieutenant or Penny he’s probably getting tricked in some way.

(He’s smart enough to not fully fall into the bait, if anything the idea of someone being used as bait for him makes him mad enough)

Type of guy to enjoy hot temperatures, preferably anything that steams, like a hot towel!

It massages the outer plates of his body, as well making his circits more loose to where he could melt like putty. As he’s said before about steam: “It relaxes him for the whole day” (Help Wanted reference again hi)

Although he enjoys consuming many things, this guys a MAJOR sweet tooth.

Anything sweet, rich, sour, chilled, creamy, milky, choc-y even he easily melts over. He’s the type of guy who could eat a cake whole if he wanted; and given his agility, he very much can.

Fidget’s a Pansexual-romantic (or just an asexual pansexual!)

This robot understands love much more than intended, almost anyone appealing enough makes his heart race. But even then if someone outside of his family fed him he’d probably think about that longer than intended..

Even with this being the case, he’s never comfortable with anybody getting close-close with him, he’d be confused either way with him not exactly being equipped for what others find appealing. Just some close cuddling & he’s all good.

2015 Quimby post

No asked for it, no one wants it but here it is anyways.

Watch out Headcanon ahead: 2015 Quimby is Trans.

In my little world the 2015 is its own separate timeline, having a completely different looking Quimby from the Cis Male Quimby from the 1980's version who's a drag queen.

For me, 2015 Quimby started as his old self meeting Augustin, with a supportive Gadget on Quimby's choice to have top surgery when he felt comfortable to do so. And only having the top surgery along with his HRT, Quimby became the mustached Chief he is now.

(Also it's been awhile since I've done digital so things will look bad for a bit.)

YIPPEE OKAY!

HQ sees you as a more useful inspector due to your abilities and...being kind of smart.

But since Gadget is your partner, you take him along on your missions and act as his "sidekick"

But life outside of work with Gadget is...very much the same.

He believes that M.A.D will always be up to something and that he can't have time to spend on anything else.

But one kiss from you changes that mindset easily.

After changing his mindset, Gadget likes to sit around on the couch with you and watch movies.

He also knows about your powers and he'll sometimes ask you do to something for him with your powers if he's lazing around with you.

Before you gained Superpowers, you and Gadget were together, but you got kidnapped by Dr. Claw. A LOT.

The only reason that stopped was because one time, Gadget accidentally knocked some chemicals onto you in a lab and you ended up becoming radioactive and had superpowers from it.

Gadget is a little infuriating to be with, but his sweetness makes up for it.

And since he doesn't realize you are better than him, he's not upset with you having powers.

Oh God... Oh no...

I have more Inspector Gadget (1999) angst headcanon.

What if... What if he looks different in the sequel because they used his actual skin in the first build... And then it started decaying because it didn't have any blood vessels n stuff in it anymore? Like, they preserved it the best they could, so it lasts a year or so maybe before starting to break down, but it's got a shelf life in a way living skin doesn't.

And so they had to replace his face? And since they're replacing it anyway they might as well stick a few more gadgets in there because why not? So the shape of his face changed.

And he fuckin hates it of course. Because it's not his face anymore, obviously, but also it's just one more aspect of his humanity gone. Any nerve endings he might've had left in his skin? Gone now.

Any touches or kisses to show affection? No longer register because he can't feel them. Nevermind the identity crisis of looking in the mirror.

I think that's when he finally embraces the identity of Inspector Gadget, if unwillingly and after a bit of a mental breakdown.

Penny is stubborn about it. But after he just checks out he stops responding to "Uncle John" and will only respond to "Uncle Gadget", so she relents just so he'll actually talk to her.

• Turbo actually is really good with kids surprisingly! There’s just something about the Sugar Rush racers that he did not like

• McLeach is a pretty good dancer for his age, however said age provides baaad knee pain whenever he dances for too long

Inspector Gadget

• Penny called Gadget “dad” one time and he cried himself to sleep with joy that night

• Whenever he’s not on duty, Gadget likes to take walks around the park or woods and admire the scenery. He’ll take Brain or Penny with him occasionally

More Inspector Gadget 1983 headcanons - Penny’s parents

(Thought I’d share some more headcanons as I’m currently laid up on the sofa with cramps and waiting on the meds to kick in.)

We know so little about Penny’s parents that it leaves so many interpretations for us fanfic writers.^^ I do think Gadget is Penny’s biological uncle, though I’ve read some excellent fics where he’s her uncle by adoption. I’ll try to find them and link them in a separate post.

The backstory I have in my own head is that Gadget is Penny’s fraternal uncle. Gadget had only one sibling growing up, an older brother by 12 years. Gadget was 20 when Penny was born; I don’t think he’s over 40 in the original series as he seems quite young. His brother and sister-in-law had almost stopped trying to have kids as they thought they couldn’t have any, and then they were overjoyed to find out that they would be having a girl.

Growing up in the 60s and 70s with such an age gap between them, Gadget wasn’t really close to his brother, not because they didn’t get along, but simply due to the fact that by the time Gadget was in school his brother was already out and living on his own and they never really got to know each other. Of course he was at his brother’s wedding but he always joked that he and his brother were more like cousins that saw each other only at birthdays and holidays. Still, Gadget had a pleasant if distant relationship with his brother and genuinely liked his sister-in-law.

Penny’s father was a literature professor - Penny got her sharp mind from him, but she turned more towards science than the arts.^^ Her mother was a stay-at-home mom (which was more common back then) and Gadget didn’t have a chance to meet his niece when she was born as he was working so much as a young constable with the Metro City PD. Plus his brother was living in the states (I imagine Metro City being in Canada) and it was hard to visit with Gadget’s schedule and the distance.

And then there was the Accident and Gadget became a cyborg when Penny was about two. Six months later Penny’s parents died in a car crash and Gadget, still adapting to his new body, suddenly found himself the guardian of a precocious almost-three year-old.

And the rest, they say, is history.  :)

& COOL GLASSES AS WELL!! Digit would probably fit more w goggles or something from him wanting 2 investigate more thurthy, Fidget just has Gadget’s shade he uses 2 look “really cool!!”

2015 gave some insight on the inner look of Gadget's body. Mostly the second one showed the look of his skull and how much under that faux skin he's just metal. But questioned what was in his head besides a brain. Showing he has some sort of heart as well.

As well as the fact he is carrying uranium inside him to power his helicopter? He's a walking hazard just by existing.

Headcanon: This is why everyone is so nice to him. The fact he is a serious threat and fully capable now, since the professor now loaded him weapons and has poisonous gas to wipe out the entire HQ. He is literally the evil Gadget from the 1999 movie with the weapons, but nice still and unknowing he could accidentally kill.

He reminds me of the Iron Giant, a fully functioning mass murder weapon but is stopped because he was given a directive hindering plot device, here Gadget's just kind of dumb so that's his. But at the sight of of someone he loves hurt/dead be it Quimby or Penny, he'd snap and begin the process of destroying everything because now he has no point.

This a bit of an odd request, but could you do some headcanons of how Ranpo would act if he met Fukuzawa’s, like, biological child? So, Reader is like 10-12 meeting Ranpo for the first time (*´∀｀*)! Synopsis: When Ranpo meets Fukuzawa's 11 year old biological child things would go very chaotic in the Ada, not because of the child no no. Will jealousy take over the greatest detective's feelings? Or will there they share cute moments together?

When Ranpo first found out about your existence he was quite happy to know that there would be a mini Fukuzawa but then it occurred to him...

He didn't hate you no, he just wanted to have affections and attention.

What if his father figure Fukuzawa replace him?!

Maybe he wouldn't care about him anymore and focus on you?!

That's why he made a plan..

A plan to make so much achievements that Fukuzawa doesn't replace him and maybe be his son figure in the process.

That was what he had planned...

"everyone. Please listen." He coughed and everyone's attention and eyes shifted to him.

"What is it Fukuzawa-dono?" Kunikida asked.

"I want you all to meet my child." He declared which made almost everyone dumbfounded with Ranpo opening his eyes that was full of determination.

"P-pardon??" Kunikida stuttered. After processing Naomi and the others squeeled in joy while Kenji's eyes brightened. As Ranpo stood up from his seat to face Fukuzawa he asked:

"Where are they?"

Fukuzawa sighed and Ranpo took notice of a hand clutching his yukata.

"Y/n. You can come out" Fukuzawa's eyes softened which Ranpo noticed and pouted.

"Hello. I'm Y/n..."

When Ranpo saw you his eyes widened the girls on the back squeeled while Kunikida looked away coughing clearly shocked. They surrounded you while he stood there supposed to be facing his arch nemesis for your father's affection.

"aww! How old are you Y/n?" Naomi asked.

"I'm eleven." You said with confidence looking around the room. Your eyes met Ranpo and his eyes met yours, you mouthed 'help' after all you couldn't breath on how tight the black haired girl is hugging you.

"I see!" She exclaimed.

"Naomi-san.. I think you're hugging her too tight-" Kunikida tried explaining but his mouth closed shut after seeing the fire in her eyes.

"ahem. We still have work to do." Fukuzawa ordered.

"Yes. Boss." Everyone replied.

"So who would like to take care of Y/n for me..?" He asked but Ranpo's mind wandered somewhere. He thought:

''If I take care of his child well... The he might give me a pat in the head! And a praise!''

"I volunteer to take care of her!" Ranpo exclaimed raising his hand. which made some surprised to think he would volunteer to take care of a child.

"Very well.." Fukuzawa replied giving him a pat in the head making him flabbergasted but he smiled.

After that, both you and Ranpo did all kinds of things. His supposed plan backfired greatly. He took you to a bakery and he found out that both of you shared the same taste and sweet tooth. You enjoyed chess together. He shared his sweets with you which he doesn't share with anyone. You tied his hair and he did yours. You fed him sweets you like and he did so. You watched 'inspector gadget' together. He felt happy to spend time with you. Without noticing time passed and the sun set.

"But I don't want to leave Ranpo-kun.!." You muttered biting your lip.

"Yeah! I don't want Y/n to leave!" He pouted cuddling you and you cuddled with him.

You two were sitting on the couch watching TV and cuddling for warmth as you two fought each other for the warm blanket. In the end you shared the blanket and continued to munch on the popcorn.

"Hai.. both of you would see each other tomorrow" Fukuzawa sighed.

"fine.! But one more episode!" You bargained. At the start of your sentence he was relieved. He pinched his nose but could only sigh when he saw you and Ranpo's sparkly eyes. He ended up agreeing and left the TV room.

When he entered you and Ranpo were both asleep while the TV kept playing. He acted as your pillow and you acted like his in the comfortable blanket. Ranpo was snoring and you were drooling. He chuckled at the sight and closed the TV.

In the end, Fukuzawa praises him and pats his head telling him:

"you did a good job"

My heart! Ranpo was really happy and you spent more time together slacking at the agency and being bored.

he does everything in his way to make sure that ANY hate is blocked from your life. Nasty comments on your posts? he's deleting them. People hating on you in real life? best believe that messing around in the metaverse

as soon as your ex shows up? he's making sure you don't stray to far from him. not really in a possessive way, but juts because he doesn't want you to have to be close to him.

VERY straight forward with your ex, very blunt. no beating around the bush.

"Leave Y/n alone. don't speak to her, don't look at her, don't even think about her."

if he ends up being away from you, he takes the opportunity to speak one on one with your ex iykwim

tbh you being a famous singer is great for his reputation

he enjoys going on dates with you, and acting all cute n stuff, probably soft launches you on his socials because he doesn't want to expose to much about you, but still wants the world to know he is he taken

very helpful with your career, and great at giving advice.

he's delt with his fair share of fan girls/boys, and has great advice on how to avoid them and how to get them to go away

most of your dates consist of hanging out in his apartment and playing bored games, and ordering some sort of take out.

you occasionally go out, but because your both quite famous you usually go to quiet locations that aren't very busy.

as soon as he hears about anyone being even REMOTELY rude to you he is inspector gadgeting the heck out of them and finding out EVERY detail about there life.

if it progresses any worse, and they start taking physical action or are doing anything that scares you, he's taking a quick trip to the meta verse.

usually though, he stops anything bad from happening to you before it can get bad, and is quite good at sensing things like that. its like having a watch dog.
