Rooftop Romance

A/N: Hey all! Rei here! It’s my first time writing on Tumblr (and first time writing an x reader fic AND kiss scene), so please bear with me! I'm still tryna figure this out. Any RESPECTFUL feedback would be welcome! Also, Happy New Year!!!

Pairing: Dazai x reader

Genre: fluff, comfort (?) – I still don’t get what the hell that is

Content warning: stupid, lovesick fools, a depressed (normal) Dazai, swearing, mentions of suicide (c’mon guys, it's Dazai), kissing, idk what else so lemme know if there’s anything else I need to add...

Synopsis: Two idiots on a rooftop, trying to sort out their love lives, and a sane friend (Yosano) sighing in relief once everything ends well

It's way too loud. The music is starting to make your head throb, and you close your eyes, trying and failing to find some quiet within. Had your best friend, Yosano, not dragged you to the “small” party the agency is throwing to help welcome the new year, you would’ve gladly spent your time huddled under the covers of your comfortable futon, soft pyjamas caressing your exhausted body as you slowly lulled yourself to sweet sleep.

But nooooooooo, instead, here you are, still at the agency on the last day of the year well past your working hours, forcing a smile that has probably turned psychotic by now – you can feel your cheek muscles burning – and trying to behave amicably with your friends.

“(Y/N)-san! Are you okay?”

A wide-eyed, white-haired male comes into your line of sight, a worried expression plastered on his innocent face. Shaking your head with a reassuring smile, you say in a cheerful voice that was laced with fatigue,

“I’m alright, Atsushi-kun, just a bit tired. It is quite hot and stuffy in here, not to mention the noise.”

Atsushi nods with a sympathetic look, before suggesting,

“Why don’t you go up on the rooftop, (Y/N)-san? It’d be quieter up there, and you could do with some fresh air!”

Smiling tiredly, you nod your thanks, before turning away gracefully, eager to get out of the suffocating room. However, you are stopped once more, and upon seeing the culprit, you huff in annoyance and do little to hide your disdain.

“Leaving so soon?” The amused tone does little to quench your irritation, and instead adds more water to the dam of displeasure that was threatening to break within you.

“What, Yosano? Haven’t you done enough by dragging me here in the first place? My poor futon is lonely without me!” Unfortunately, your irritated scowl only made her laugh harder.

“Your futon will survive (Y/N). Now, why are you trying to escape? You haven’t forgotten you lost our little bet, now, have you?”

You look absolutely murderous now, the urge to wipe the smirk off Yosano’s face becoming unbearable. Oh, how you long to use that chainsaw of hers on her to hear her beautiful screams. But soon, that anger boiling away within you turned on yourself, and you cursed your overconfident, past self...

“Nuh-uh (Y/N)! I won fair and square, and we agreed loser has to do one thing the winner says...”

You pout adorably, big puppy eyes blinking innocently at the sadistic doctor before you, hoping it would give you a lighter sentence, but alas, it did nothing to sway her. The room the two were in was dark, save for the four, small candles lit in the middle of the room on the floor in between the two, giving a red glow as the aroma of roses clung around them. It was easy to mistake the atmosphere for romantic, had the inhabitants not been cackling madly a few minutes prior, unhinged grins lighting their faces.

“Confess to Dazai at the party the Agency is throwing tomorrow. I can’t bear to see you still pining after him like a lovesick fool for any longer!”

Your eyes widen for real this time, the innocent act from before long ago abandoned, as a soft blush made its way across your cheeks. You look away shyly, and ask in a small voice,

“C-confess? Me? B-but...what if...”

You trail off, fear seizing your chest as you think of finally allowing your true feelings to surface. There is no way you could confess...you don’t have the guts to go up to him...You were close friends, but what if you ruined that by confessing? What if he doesn’t like you back? Dazai Osamu does not seem to be a man that sits back and waits if he has feelings...surely, he would have confessed to you by now if he liked you? Your heart says you’d be better off trying so that you’d have an answer, and one less regret to add to your list of life-long, dumb (Y/N) moments, but your head was too much of a coward to listen.

And seeing you in such a dilemma had forced Yosano to take matters in her own hand. She had carefully crafted the perfect trap for you to fall into in order to get you to confess to the man that had seized your heart. And you definitely didn’t need to know that she had cheated in the game in order to win. Yep, Yosano preferred causing pain rather than enduring it.

“Yosano, please! H-he’s not even here! So, why should I even stay?”

Yosano’s expression softens. She gently takes one of your hands into both her own, and squeezes reassuringly as she says,

“I’m doing this because I want you to be happy. (Y/N), I don’t want you to ever look back and wonder what would have happened if you had confessed, I want you to know that answer. By the way, he’s on the rooftop,” your breath hitches at this information, “But I won’t force you. The choice is yours now.”

With a final, soothing smile, Yosano leaves to drag Kunikida with her to the make-shift dance floor at the centre of the room to bend him backwards (hoping it breaks a few bones which she could mend) but you’re too busy in your own world to notice. Standing frozen in front of the staircase, you attempt to clear your head and calm yourself. Determined not to let Yosano’s efforts go to vain, you let your legs carry you to him.

And once you spot Dazai Osamu, your breath leaves you. He’s sitting on the floor, back against the wall with his left foot propped up, left knee acting as an arm rest. His eyes are closed whilst his long fingers are rhythmically tapping against his right thigh, a mindless action of his that is making your mind race with thoughts you’d rather never share with anyone. The gentle wind ruffles his soft, brown locks, and a genuine smile is gracing those pretty lips you often find yourself staring at. He looks so...so at peace that a part of you wants to preserve that rare expression of his and not bother him. Pull yourself together (Y/N), you think to yourself sternly, and before your brain can come up with any more excuses, you softly glide towards him.

“H-hey, Dazai-kun,” you hate how nervous you sound as you approach him tentatively, almost like you’re trying not to scare him away, when in reality, it is you who wants to run away.

He finally cracks an eye open, before letting it fall shut again, humming a reply. You stop a few feet away from him, your courage evaporating away at his unenthusiastic response, and you fidget with your hands, unsure of what else to say. Almost as if he could sense your growing unease, Dazai heroically fills in the silence,

“Why are you so far away, Belladonna? C’mere,” he pats the spot next to him, and you sink to the floor beside him, unable to process a single though as the proximity addles with your brain.

Smiling softly, he asks,

“Do I scare you, (Y/N)-chan? You always seem to keep your distance from me nowadays.”

Shaking your head vigorously, you answer, thankfully without stuttering this time,

“Never, Dazai-kun! I just feel...nervous around you.”

He frowns at this, and you long to smooth out the crease between his eyebrows. Your hand twitches, and your pinkie finger accidently grazes the bandaged hand next to yours, eliciting a pink blush to dust your cheeks. Dazai’s gaze immediately falls on the hand next to his, and you dare not move it. Suddenly, as if on instinct, his large hand engulfs your smaller one, and before you can stop it, a soft gasp falls from your lips. The feeling of his calloused yet gentle hand sends a warm feeling through your chest, and a timid smile makes its way across your face. Piercing, brown eyes turn to give you a scrutinising stare as the frown marring his ethereal face deepens. His inquisitive eyes are searching for answers, trying to decipher every secret your soul holds, before letting out a weary sigh.

“I was hoping it would not come to this,” his voice is low, and makes your blush deepen at how intimate this feels, his voice feels. You still do not have the nerve to look at his face, instead opting to stare at your intertwined hands.

But he lets go – and you miss the warmth he provided already – as he stands up and walks to the edge of the rooftop, and you stumble to your feet gracelessly before jogging after him. You shoot Dazai a questioning stare, trying to ignore how gorgeous his side profile looks, as you attempt to get answers. When he finally turns to you, a frown is settling on your face now. He is smiling, yes, but it was the one he wears for everyone else. Too fake, too forced. You do not like it. But before you can say anything, Dazai speaks,

“What’s your New Year’s resolution, (Y/N)-chan?”

Unable to stare at his fake persona, you look ahead at the vast city at your feet. Yokohama was truly a beauty, especially at night with its magnificent lights, and your heart swells with pride at the fact that you’ve contributed to protecting this place. This home. Your home.

“I want to let go of my fears. I want to be brave.”

He regards you with a curious expression, before chuckling softly and you relish at the sound, subconsciously relaxing at such a pure burst of happiness. You were the cause of this. And you love it.

Childishly, he retorts,

“Don’t you wanna know my resolution, ‘donna? It’s to commit a double –”

His eyes widen in surprise as you frantically cut him off by covering his mouth with your hand. Somewhere in your mind, you feel a surge of utter elation as you feel his soft lips against your palm, but you’re too anxious to fully process this.

“Please don’t say that,” you beg Dazai with tears in your eyes, and this time, he is able to disguise the shock he feels from your intense display of emotions.

A vacant smile is plastered on his face as he gently grasps your wrist and pulls you hand away. Not letting go, he emptily states,

“It’s not like anyone will care or miss me.”

“No!” you shout it, you scream it, you yell it so loudly that you yourself flinch at the cacophonic noise. It echoes, the raw desperation in your tone deafening, and you both stare at each other, you in shock, him waiting for you to recover.

“The agency will care!” you insist, boldly grabbing the front of his trench coat as if to prevent him from running away from your sharp words. You seem to be unconscious of your actions, too absorbed in trying to convince the suicidal man before you, “Atsushi will care! You’re his mentor, what will he do without you?!”

Suddenly, the strength leaves you, and you sway on your feet before falling forward against Dazai’s chest. Firm arms wrap themselves around you, holding you in a gentle embrace as you gulp air, burying your head into his chest to hide your tears. Weakly, you utter,

“I care.”

Dazai sighs softly, resting his chin on your head as he holds you close to him, rubbing soothing circles on your back as he gently rocks you back and forth. Taking in a deep breath, he whispers in your ear,

“My sincerest apologies for making you upset, my love.”

Your head shoots up at the nickname, and he chuckles at the innocently surprised expression on your face. Wiping away your tears and gently brushing the hair out of your face, he looks into your eyes with a tender expression. Smiling exhaustedly, he adds,

“You’re making it extremely difficult for me to push you away, (Y/N).”

In the distance, the countdown for the new year begins.

“W-what do you mean?” You ask, confused.

He twirls a strand of your hair between his fingers as he answers quietly, “You came to confess to me, didn’t you?”

You look mortified, jaw falling open in shock, although you should have expected a great detective such as Dazai Osamu to deduce this. You ask in an accusatory tone,

“You knew this whole time?”

Failing to stifle his laugh, he nods his head with a mischievous glint in those vibrant brown eyes.

“Bastard!” You gasp out, but there’s no real bite in your tone as you hit his chest hard.

Dramatically, he cries out, “I’m sorry my love! Those emotions you feel, I feel them too! So please, spare me the pain!”

After a few beats of silence, his cheery façade fades away, leaving a serious, broken man who says in a forlorn tone, “But I, a monster, do not deserve someone as pure as you.”

You expression softens, as you gently take his face in your hands and firmly say,

“Your past actions do not define who you are. You’re trying to be a good man. You’re on the light side now. And that big leap you took, it shows that you’re the furthest thing from a monster, Dazai.”

He steps closer, the hands on your waist tightening, and gratitude drips from his tone as he says,

“Thank you (Y/N), for always being there for me. I don’t know how I can repay you.”

Your smile turns sly as you say,

“I know of a way.”

Your eyes quickly dart to his perfect lips, before finally looking him in the eye, and his reciprocating smirk tells you that he perfectly understands what you have just implied. The depths of both your emotions hits the other full force, and you both lean closer, foreheads touching, noses brushing past each other. You can feel his hot breath against your mouth, and you unconsciously part your lips as you stare deep into his soul.

With utter adoration, you utter,

“I love you, Dazai.”

Without missing a beat, he earnestly replies,

“I love you too, (Y/N).”

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Your eyes flutter shut a millisecond before he closes the gap, replacing the air around you with something much sweeter. His lips meet yours, soft and gentle as they caress yours, pouring all of his love for you into your first kiss. Fireworks go off around the both of you, creating a beautiful illumination of a new couple, but you are too absorbed in the intoxicating love Dazai is providing you to care. The cheering below feels as if they are specifically for you, and it causes you to push yourself deeper into his embrace. At last, you break apart, gasping for breath, as you rest your head against his chest, a dopey smile playing on your lips. Chuckling deeply, he huskily asks,

“How was that, my Belladonna?”

Teasingly, you remark,

“Not bad.”

He pouts, and it takes all of your willpower not to kiss it away. Relenting, you admit,

“It was perfect, Dazai, just like you are.”

You don’t know if your eyes are playing tricks on you, but you swear you just saw the great Dazai Osamu, the world’s biggest flirt, blush at your words. But you don’t dare ask him. Not when he looks so content, just like he did when you first stepped foot on the rooftop. Resting his forehead against yours, he states,

“It appears you have fulfilled your new year’s resolution.”

Giggling, you reply,

“Yep, it appears so!”

And with a sudden burst of courage, you grab his collar and pull him down to you, smashing your lips against his passionately.

Tanizaki’s Entrance Exam – definitely involved Yosano...

A/N: Hey all! Rei here! Tanizaki had once stated that his entrance exam was so traumatic that he had buried it deep within his memory, but I hate secrets so I’m gonna try and decipher exactly what is going on...

Why I think Yosano is involved:

Like I mentioned above, Tanizaki had stated that he had some very traumatising memories of his entrance exam that he wished to bury deep in his consciousness when Atsushi had enquired him, and therefore I wondered...what is Tanizaki scared off? If it had been something to do with Naomi being hurt/in danger, that would have set Tanizaki off and he would have been more furious than terrified, so, it had to be something that had hurt Tanizaki himself. It is also canon that Tanizaki is dead scared of Yosano...so that definitely meant (to me, at least) that Yosano is involved.

Who found him:

It obviously couldn’t have been Kenji, Atsushi or Kyouka – they haven’t even joined the Agency. Neither could it have been Yosano, because the person involved in the entrance exam couldn’t be a member the rookie knows (as seen with Atsushi’s entrance exam). It would’ve been adorable if Ranpo had found him – but let's be real, this sweetheart would have been too busy munching away at his infinite stock of candy or terrorising all the police officers in Yokohama. 😂 And Dazai would be too busy slacking off (and something tells me that Atsushi was the first and ONLY member he found cuz of their sweet (but possibly toxic) relationship + he only acts as a mentor to Atsushi). Therefore, it is likely that either Fukuzawa or Kunikida (the responsible adults...and probably the only sane ones).

What had happened:

Tanizaki probably was following Kunikida, and Dazai would have most likely decided to tag along to annoy our fav glasses man (Ik, that’s such a horrible nickname XD) AND cuz he knew that he was in for some entertainment – or maybe, Dazai was the one who came up with the whole idea for Tanizaki’s exam... And our bundle of bundle of bandages would no doubt have been too happy to terrify poor Tanizaki.

By the time they’d reached wherever they were meant to be, Tanizaki would be shaking from the stupid shit Dazai had told him and Kunikida would be too annoyed with Dazai to reassure Tanizaki. And Yosano being the “crazy criminal” Tanizaki has to save everyone from would just make matters worse for this poor rookie (why do I feel that Yosano would absolutely enjoy her role 😭😭).

So, when Tanizaki had to deal with Yosano, he was really brave and passed, but he must have done something extreme and got inured – this could be something a small or big injury. Either way, Yosano would be absolutely eager to heal him. Now, we all know what would happen. She’d go FULL OUT with NO MERCY and our two, lovely mentors would have escaped the room (let’s be real, Kunikida is waaaaaaaay to scared of Yosano and Dazai is a lazy bastard who has no need to save anyone) and from that moment onwards, Tanizaki has been diagnosed with severe PTSD due to his entrance exam. 😂 + 😭= 🥲

A/N: Tanizaki is one of the most mysterious characters in BSD, so I can’t wait to see what Asagiri-sensei has planned for him... 😊
