𝐂𝐋𝐗𝐈𝐈. Concerning the insurrection in Khaenri'ah by the military faction and the citizens that were brave to join the cause to put a stop to the deplorable situation the kingdom was facing because of the people that obsessed too much over the Abyss, Dain was one of the Black Serpent Knights that fought for the improvement. Being in constant touch with royalty and aristocracy and his own observations as a knight made it difficult for him to not realize that something sinister was boiling down in regards of the Abyss, and to have suspicions that certain events that jeopardized the citizens' safety were directly related to those who tampered too much with the Abyss. To him, everyone was a Khaenri'ahn no matter if pure-blood or not, as his last order during the cataclysm was to protect everyone at all cost, no matter if royalty, nobility or otherwise.

one thing i think is so Neat about atla is how all the main bender characters have an arc that corresponds to their "opposite" element. zuko's arc is about the capacity to change yourself and your worldview, and the culmination of his arc is learning a move inspired by waterbending. katara is all about passion and drive, wanting to become a great waterbender and fight for what she believes in, and over the course of the show she comes into her power. toph's arc involves getting free of her restrictive family and connecting with a community, and aang's arc is about learning to stand fast in his beliefs and confront difficult issues head-on. it's a beautiful bit of symmetry that reinforces the show's point about the illusion of separation

The dissonance between Sebastian's narrative role in Pressure's lore and his functional role in Pressure's gameplay mechanics is so compelling to me. He unleashed all the monsters before you got there. He gives you tutorials on how to evade the monsters you've died to. He boasts about massacring the people who sent you and vows to kill more of them. He only attacks you if provoked. He's central to the main expedition's story. His story is a footnote in the main expedition's gameplay progression. He's on the thumbnail, twice. You can technically beat the game without ever meeting him. You're here because of him. Your assignment has nothing to do with him. He needs you to fail. He lets you try again. Everything that hinders your progress can be traced back to him, however indirectly. His involvement in your experience is notably disconnected from the rest of it. He's supposed to be killed on sight. He's not a boss encounter. He's doomed if you beat the game. His encounters all serve to help you beat the game. He's our antagonist. He's just a shopkeep.

OK correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like the main 'yin/yang' parallel with Atsushi and Akutagawa is not something like 'this one is bad but secretly has a good side and this one is good but secretly has a bad side'.
I feel like it's more about 'who they are at their core vs who they choose to be'.
At his core Akutagawa is kind and at his core Atsushi is not. But despite this Atsushi tries every day to make the kinder choices and I love him so much for it. He has to work so hard to be good.
He wants to be a bitch SO bad I know he does but he tries his best to help people and be nice (sometimes he fails but that's OK <3)
Atsushi doesn't always WANT to help people, a lot of the time he's selfish and scared, but he does help people anyway. He keeps helping people over and over again. There's still some selfish motivation to it, and his initial motivation for helping people was because the headmaster told him that's all he was worth, but overall he does care about the people he helps and it weighs on him if he fails to save them. And of course, as the series goes on he starts helping people more because he can rather than because he feels like he needs to.
In Akutagawa's case, he's still capable of being kind but his environment led him into being someone who chooses to hurt people. But he's always been a protector at heart. In the start he was bad compared to Atsushi because he was choosing to hurt people and keep the cycle of abuse going. Just like how Atsushi developed in why he saved people, Akutagawa starts to get redeemed when he chooses to not just act on his rage. Not only does he start to spare people, but he speaks more kindly to them (apologising to Higuchi and telling Kyouka he's proud of her). It all culminates into the moment he chooses to help Atsushi and sacrifice himself for him, going back to his core value of being a protector. Even when he's finally revived, he keeps this role in his new position as Aya's Knight.
I kind of see the streaks of white in Akutagawa and the streaks of black in Atsushi not as their 'hidden sides' but as their fundamental selfs. That's who they are at their core, and their main colours (black for Akutagawa and white for Atsushi) are how they're presented to everyone else and how they try to have people see them as.

i do love how buck realised he was bisexual and it was like wow! huge character development moment! maybe this was the missing piece in his growth! only for him to just barrel straight into another disaster relationship. like.. terrible first date, then reconciling and immediately inviting him to a family wedding? six months later they've somehow never even mentioned the fact that tommy isn't into women or that he was previously ENGAGED (let alone that it was to the same women buck had a deeply formative relationship with). and to celebrate this milestone tommy gets buck a gift we've established he isn't interested in, but it's ok because buck got him nothing. also buck is NOT in love (or seemingly even considering it), but nevermind he obviously has to invite tommy to move in. because of glee. but instead that conversation ends with buck getting dumped. and then they run into each other and have sex at buck's best friend's old house he lives in now only for tommy to reveal he's only interested if he's not in competition with said best friend. to which buck fails to deny the in love with his best friend allegations but makes sure to mention that he doesn't have to have feelings for tommy just because he slept with him........ how beautiful that buck can fail to have a functioning relationship regardless of gender <3
