little poster for a minicomic im working on thats half au / half backstory for virgil and the tsp gang in my universe called "la vie en jaune" (or life in yellow in french) (i think) (idk i live in canada)

for a full infodump on this au ill put it under the cut bc this au is an amalgamation of portal 2 (which takes from cave johnson, caroline, aperture, while also taking from a chelley fic i read) , simon from adventure time, kingsman, and floating megane's ted nivison comics on insta.

the plot:

Virgil works at a company called Ouroboros Technologies, whos goal is to make gadgets that automate the process of buisnesses (though they never go beyond that explanation, it pays hella money so ppl dont question it).

Anyways, Virgil's job is to hire and manage the new employees in his division. And at his 427th employee he hires Stanley Rider (also rider is stanleys canonical last name apparently so might as well use that instead of parable). A 26 year old whos fresh out of university n is working as an intern. Getting coffee, flowers for the office, making sure everyone has enough whiteboard markers since ppl use that up like crazy, etc

The two get close to the point that Stanley becomes Virgil's assistant. Which helps a bit since both Stanley and Virgil are struggling to keep up with their (seperate n now combined) workload.

The company makes a prototype product which is a set of yellow glasses, which gives the user access to the whole company's building, files, and technology in an AR form that they can access at the blink of an eye. The Prototype AR Accessible Biotech Launcher Enviroment (or pARable for short) They give it to Virgil to test, and research finds that it improves productivity 110%. However, the tech begins to backfire as it slowly begins to change Virgil's attitude and body. His mind starts to forget the people and names around him, he starts becoming increasingly more anxious and self conscious of his work when in the presence of an audience, his body begins to rapidly age and drain his life from him, and he begins to crave the control that he is given with these glasses.

Stanley notices this, and pleads with Virgil to stop, which he does. However, it causes them to fall behind on their workload, and the higherups dont like it.

Eventually, as the company threatens to dock their pay, Virgil is forced to use the glasses again in order to keep up with the workload and feed both him and Stanley. At which, Virgil begins to lose himself more and more. Forgetting his name and instead calling himself the Narrator.

The only person that he remembers is Stanley.

One night, Virgil doesn't come home, and after filing a missing persons case, Stanley doesn't find him. (Although the usual silence from Ouroboros seems more ominous than usual)

The company begins to export and send pARables en masse to all its employees, and the company reaches a terrifying peak in efficiency. And Stanley follows. Yet the only difference is that his pARable is different than his coworkers. Where everyone else starts off at a narration explaining the device followed by a room that is designed to look exactly like the user's own bedroom. Stanley's starts off with a story, in an office that looks suspiciously like his.

And concerningly, he can only vaguely remember of his life before the pARable.

And so the game plays out like normal, except both Stanley and The Narrator cant help but shake the fact that the other feels so familiar somehow.

So in terms of general concepts/tropes I enjoy in all media, there def any iteration of (Enemies/Rivals to) Friends to Lovers; then Found Family <3 and hurt/comfort -> especially in combo with one of the other two tropes!

When in comes to which types of fanfics I specifically seek out most of the time:

(putting these answers and the fanfic recs under the cut, cause this is once again getting way longer than I intended)

I know this is super unpopular, but I love well done miscommunication in fanfics! Hate it in most movies tho!!

-> also what I think constitutes “good” miscommunication basically boils down to “ is the miscommunication plot or character motivated?” cause in a lot of media the miscommunication feels forced and only meant to prolong or escalate the story

-> but if the miscommunication happens bc the characters are, for example, insecure about sharing certain info/feelings it is way more captivating and relatable (to me)

-> so this is ofc directly related to (Mutual) Pining <3 (plus also connected to another fave of mine: Memory Loss/Amnesia & also secret identity)

2. Forced proximity!!

-> I’m counting both sharing a bed and stuff like fake relationship under this umbrella

-> I just love when characters are forced to interact with each other in a different and typically more intimate way than they usually do! (and what it reveals about themselves and their relationship to eachother!)

3. Fix-it fanfics

-> I actually love original stories that have tragic endings! But there are many ways a story can end in a disappointing way and make me immeditaly turn to what all the wonderful fanfic authors have come up with in order to clean up the mess!

Hello hello and welcome to my search thread! I have three specific fandom cravings I need your help with: Hartwin, Johnlock & Symbrock. I’ve got some plots for your consideration below!

I’ve been roleplaying for a long time and prefer to write over Discord (shipsahoya#9763), but can also write over tumblr or email. I have no required word count or paragraph length from you, but do tell me your preference!

I work a busy job full time, so I can’t always post every day. Sometimes I can post multiple times a day and sometimes life gets in the way and it takes me a few days. I’m always happy to chat OOC! Let’s talk, share fanart and fics we like!

As a side note, I do not roleplay with minors. I prefer to roleplay with partners who are 21+.

The Roleplay Ideas

Hartwin - Eggsy Unwin / Harry Hart

Look, I love these two and have since the first movie came out. I prefer to play Eggsy.

• Canon Adjacent: Two years have gone by since Harry Hart was ‘killed’ by Valentine. Merlin, Eggsy, and Roxy have rebuilt the Kingsman team and have continued to work around the globe to keep the world safe. When Eggsy is sent on a mission out in the states, he’s getting settled in to his lodging when he spots none other than Harry Hart across the street. Harry Hart who has no memory of anything beyond the last two years.

• Undercover Mission: A new crime syndicate has been gaining more notoriety lately. Their HQ? An exclusive resort. In order to investigate what’s going on, Harry and Eggsy go undercover as a couple.

• Retired Harry/Injured Eggsy AU: Harry Hart retired from the Kingsman Agency after the death of Lancelot (Lee Unwin). Now, he runs a butterfly sanctuary down at the science center. Imagine his surprise when he finds a man passed out and bleeding in the middle of the sanctuary when he arrives for work one morning.

Out of nowhere, I’ve been craving these two all over again. I prefer to play John.

• MCU AU: Sherlock Holmes doesn’t believe in sorcery until a case leads him to the Sorcerer Supreme. As things unfold, he becomes the new guardian of the Sanctum, only for CIA operative John Watson to be assigned to make sure he isn’t causing trouble.

• SuperWhoLock AU (minus the Dr. Who): Okay, I know. But hear me out, it’s about to be spooky season. So why shouldn’t Sherlock solve crimes with ghosts and ghouls and vampires? And why shouldn’t John be a blogger who’s been assigned to interview him with absolutely no belief in the supernatural?

• The Kingsman AU: The Kingsman Agency has lost a few members and is actively recruiting. John is brought into the recruiting process thanks to his medical experience in combat. Sherlock is brought in partly because his brother runs the organization, and partly for his crime solving skills. But can they survive training without butting heads?

• Stranger Things AU: What if instead of traveling space, Carlton Drake was focused on opening a portal to the upside down? Only instead of mind flayers and demogorgons, the upside down is inhabited by the symbiotes? Eddie infiltrates the Life Foundation to find that someone has already made it through the portal…

• Far From Home: What if instead of spending all of FFH at the bar, Eddie and Venom find their way to New York City and after a squabble, end up teaming up with Peter Parker?

•Alternate First Movie: Down on his luck, Eddie decides to volunteer for human trials at the Life Foundation. Except Carlton Drake hasn’t been very upfront about what this trial entails.

For We In Our Youth Did These Things (Kingsman) M

Summary: Eight years after the disappearance of Merlin, Roxy Morton receives a mysterious clue that could lead to the destruction of everything that she once believed in.

This is possibly my least engaged-with fic in comparison to the effort and time I put into it, and I can't say I blame people. It's a lesbian rare-pair, I didn't finish it until long after Kingsman had lost its lustre because of the horrendous sequel, it's a a tinker tailor soldier spy AU, a sequel to a different (quite intense) WWII AU, and it's very bleak and novelly rather than fanficcy. There is nothing I've written that so much encapsulates the "I Write For Me" ethos of fanfiction. I haven't read it back in a couple of years, and I'm sure I could pull out things I'll want to edit on my next read-through, but holy damn! Good Stuff! I did that! My world-building and playing with a relatively twisty-turny plot and creation of the lesbian spy drama that we deserve was fucking incredible (if I do say so myself)!

2. the language of change (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) G

Summary: When Kira - newly-appointed ambassador for Bajoran/Cardassian relations - arrives on Cardassia to see her old friend Garak, she's immediately pulled into another one of his schemes. Not everyone is as convinced of the plan as he is, so now Kira has to try not to yell, punch someone, or accidentally engage too hard in argumentative flirting.

This began a longer endeavour (that I'm not finished with) across a whole series to create a post-DS9 climate that I wish could exist in Alpha Canon, where the end of the Dominion War, the destruction of Cardassia, and Bajoran politics affect the wider story (as they damn well should). I also wanted to create a story about various different DS9 characters and their continued relationships to each other, and finally let Kira be a lesbian! So much of my DS9 HC was born out of creating this fic.

To be honest I could put several fics from this series alone on here, because I love it very, very dearly, but I think this one. It makes me feel so so happy.

3. between the devil and the deep blue sea (Peaky Blinders) E

Summary: Tommy hallucinates that Alfie is Death and almost kills him. Alfie responds by trying to choke him to death. Tommy moans and well, who is Alfie to kill something that moans so prettily, while his hands are around its neck.

This was uh... lockdown gave me so much time and I live with kinky people who enable the fuck out of me. This is my first really graphic fic and it is really fucking graphic. I did not know I had it in me. What I really love about it, was that it felt like I was really beginning to understand what kind of a writer I am with this. The ways everything is to the benefit of character study, including sex, and the way I like to create large, intricate things that reference back to themselves and include a lot of re-read gratification (I think so at least)! It gave me so much freedom to push myself and - if you're into some serious dubcon - I think it's uh... pretty hot... to pat myself on the back.

4. Smalltown Boys (The Outsiders) M

Summary: Johnny and Dally survived, but it turns out living is very different to surviving.

This one is still in-progress, but the chapters work as their own little narratives. I have wanted to write this for awhile, and it's very rewarding. I get to think about queerness in a historical context and pay little pieces of respect to queer writers of the past in various little ways (either through plot structure, modelling characters off of them, or referencing their works in the text). And of course, I get to let these two flipping live! It's also started me on a journey of reimagining texts as queer in ways that for the most part just... nudge them to the left a little, because as anyone who hangs around me for more than 5 seconds knows, I'm obsessed with the ways creators use queercoding tools without knowing it. I just think it's a very beautiful little slice of life, with the realities of queerness affecting how they move through the world.

5. Breathe With Me M

Summary: Daniel discovers that all it takes for Johnny to do as he's told is the right touch

I wanted to include something from Cobra Kai, because obviously that's my main sandbox right now, and I think it's this one, simply because it establishes how far I've gotten in my thinking about Daniel, Johnny, and Amanda so far. It's also what I wrote while I was really getting into the fandom itself, while before that I was still getting to know people. I think cementing an aro-Amanda in my head was such a breakthrough to my view of her, before that I couldn't quite pin her down, but now I get to develop her in lots of different directions (and will do so!) -- as for this Daniel and Johnny... well, everything after this is painted a little bit by this dynamic.

sometimes! I don’t write a lot of smut because I actively dislike writing it, but the smut I do write is super super soft and sappy and full of emotions lol

I respond to almost all of my comments! comments i won’t respond to: negative comments, unsolicited criticism, comments that aren’t relevant to the fic itself, comments simply asking for more 

I love love love responding to comments! I love every single comment that I get and I want to show how much I appreciate getting them, and personally I think responding to comments is the only way to do that! everyone has different comment philosophies, but for me, if someone is taking the time to comment on my fic like I so badly want them to, I think it’s important to respond to show my appreciation! 

10) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

aha YEAH I DO. this past weekend I actually got a number of shitty comments and had to file two ao3 abuse reports for harrasment (: I love it

I am no stranger to hate comments. I write copious amounts of age difference fic. I write copious amounts of incest. I am not going to apologize nor am I going to feel bad for enjoying either.

ughhh I sure as heck hope not!

Yes! I have a number of them :) I always always do my best to make sure it’s linked to the original fic, AND that I add a tag noting that there’s a translation!

I have made a few attempts! the only successful attempt is there's nothing i wouldn't do to make you feel my love which is a collaboration with @flightinflame, not quite a co-write!

god okay this is such a good question! imma ramble about a few so bear with me here! (i may have 700 posted works but I also have a few hundreds wips & ideas floating around in my gdrive, too)

gone & past - this is a starrish wip i’d started in 2017. I ended up deleting it from ao3 to rewrite it and never got there, but I have about 20k of content! I built my home, inside of you - thorki human au with college jock thor and high school dancer loki. i’ve got a start and nothing else Sheriff Stilinski Gets Some Sweet Sweet Lovin’ - massive wip where... well, the sheriff fucks his way through the entire pack. I want to write it but. trans allison au - this is an au where allison is trans and that changes the entire season 1 canon. it features stallison, petopher, and a looooooong ass outline that will never exist beyond my wips You Fill My Heart (With Such a Gentle Love) - this is a stetopher a/b/o au with pregnant omega stiles and alpha pair petopher falling in love. it started as a labour of love to someone I no longer have in my life. I have about 30k, a full outline, but idk. makes me sad to think about it they slipped briskly into an intimacy from which they never recovered - this is my big x-men first class rewrite that I honestly don’t think i’ll ever finish. I have a few thousand words, a full outline, but no love lost for cherik so. doubtful Physiotherapy (I'll Be Your Baby) - this was a fic I was SO excited about, and then it kinda flopped and stayed a wip because I didn’t have a plan or the motivation to finish it. it’s a winterspider human au with amputee bucky and science twink peter that I adore the premise of but who knows breathing you in chapter 2 - I have a massive second chapter planned for this fic but the first did so good so fast I am way too intimidated to write more in case everyone hates it lmao

ughhhhh I hate answering this because I have, like, seriously bad imposter syndrome around my writing BUT I do think i’m able to weave poignant backstory into narration & i write strong, distinctive narrative voices!

literally I can’t write settings at all. I don’t know how people vividly describe settings but I absolutely cannot do that and it’s one of the reasons I haven’t delved into original fiction. I need to write the town my characters live in?? fuck that imma just use a location we’ve seen on screen & let readers fill in the blanks lmao

I am also shit at long fic. I don’t have the mind for long and interesting plots, and I don’t have the focus to write long fic (which is why every long fic i’ve ever posted has taken me literal years to complete smh).

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I like it! both as a reader and as a writer. as a writer, I generally only use a few words, or small sentences that can be understood by context, and I generally don’t

2. What’s your total AO3 wordcount?

722 309. I’d have thought it would be more considering how long some of mine seem to get, although looking at other people’s answers to this meme, I guess 26 isn’t really a huge number!

3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

My first fic ever was a little Lord of the Rings experiment for an exchange thing. But my first proper dip into writing for a fandom would have been Breaking Bad, where I wrote for a couple of years before it felt like my ideas had run their course. Then there was a Kingsman fic, and then Mag7 where - similarly to BrBa - wrote feverishly for a couple years until it felt like the well had been plumbed. Oh yeah and then jumped into the Marvel fandom to drop one Marvel fic before immediately jumping back out lol.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

So the Marvel fic has officially just become my most kudoed fic, which is kind of hilarious considering it was a SUEZ! CANAL! FIC! But in my opinion, a good one lol. So yeah, it would be 1. The SamBucky Suez Canal fic, 2. The Kingsman soccer AU, 3. Desert Sand, 4. Chisolm’s 7, and 5. Blue Devils. That last one surprises me, but I guess it was an early one for the fandom, so I think it became an automatic read.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not

I do! It’s possible I’ve missed some here and there, but generally I try to get them all.

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I don’t think any of them! While my fics definitely include angst, ideally it’s still in a fun way, or at minimum, bittersweet? I don’t generally want the last taste in a reader’s mouth to be angst. ALTHOUGH. I really really wanted to include an epilogue to the selkie fic that’s kind of angsty. Basically the story would end, but then many years later we’d see an old man get off a bus on the coastal road, carrying a suitcase. He’d be wearing a suit, clearly back from many years travelling. He’d walk to the coast, back over a hill where there’d once been a little fishing cottage, long since torn down. He’d walk down to the beach and into a little cove where he’d kneel by the water he knew better than anyone. Opening the suitcase he’d take out a box which he’d then empty into the ocean, ashes spreading across the water. He’d take out a folded bundle of cloth and wrap it around his shoulders. Then he’d dive into the water, disappearing into the waves, leaving nothing but an empty suitcase behind him, and a folded pile of clothes.

I loved that ending but I’m still not 100% sure if it was keeping in tone with the actual ending, so I left it out. Maybe one day I’ll go and add it as en extra chapter snippet.

7. Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I don’t know if I’d call them ‘crossovers’ exactly, although I did stick Goody and Billy into a Some Like it Hot ‘jazz band on a train’ situation, and I also did a Breaking Bad one that used some elements of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Those feel more like ‘AUs’ though. I like situational crossovers, but I’ve never been super into fics where characters from different fandoms actually interact.

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Thankfully not. The most off-putting comment I’ve gotten was someone who - despite being very complimentary - decided to make a full-on laundry list all the anachronisms in a chapter lmao, like what. Stuff like "interesting that this character used this expression when XYZ would only been invented 10 years later!” etc. I’m positive they didn’t realize how it came off, but still, that was kind of hilarious in its.....obliviousness lol. It was special.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

I do. And I guess I’ve done the full spectrum of ‘fade to black’ to ‘describe every bead of sweat in pearlescent detail’. It really depends on what the fic calls for! I’ve done some I’m quite proud of tbh, but there are others I’d like to go back and have another stab at, just because they felt kinda cookie-cutter.

Not that I know of!

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

There’ve been a couple! I can’t remember which ones specially, but I had some people asking to translate some Breaking Bad ones, and I think a Mag7 one too. I remember someone messaging to ask permission like “We love your fics in Russia!” and that was a very sweet and wild thing to hear.

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, I wrote one with @yoporkchopsandwiches! Our Victorian opium dens Breaking Bad AU lol. I was just thinking of that recently actually and remembering how fun it was to read what the other wrote! We plotted out most of it together, and then took turns writing chapters or scenes. But of course while writing you come up with other details or ideas, so we’d then present the new chapter to the other with all the new bits added. And it was so fun to read what the other came up with like ‘omg no way didn’t see that coming/good idea!’ and then picking up their idea from there. In that sense it was almost like improv but for writers.

13. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

That I’ve written? I think I’ve had the most fun with Goodnight/Billy, partly for the time period, partly for the dynamic, but mostly for the plausibility. While I really enjoyed writing BrBa, it felt more like it came from enthusiasm for the show, not the central ship lol. Don’t get me wrong, the chemistry and its potential was extremely fun to write in a fic setting, but I don’t find I actually shipped it while watching the show itself. Whereas it’s been nice with Mag7 to write for a ship that’s actually....more believable lol. 

14. What’s a wip that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Ugh I can’t beLIEVE I have an unfinished fic up on ao3 lol it haunts me. I was sure I was done with Goodnight/Billy, and then early quarantine last year I had a train robbers AU idea, so I posted a couple chapters. But I don’t think my heart was super in it, I was more just messing around with the idea. I don’t want to delete it, but I’m also not super motivated to finish it haha, but we’ll see what happens. But tbh I like the poem summary better than the fic itself:P

15. What are your writing strengths?

Plotting, keeping things moving, and making stories feel visual maybe? They’re almost all movies in my head anyways, so I think I have good instincts for ‘cinematic moments’.

16. What are your writing weaknesses?

I think I’m a little lazy, and also ‘end-product oriented’. In some ways it’s helpful to picture the whole fic before you write it, but sometimes it results in some scenes feeling slightly slapdash because I’m just trying to get them out to move onto the next. Like ‘everyone did everything I wanted to in this scene? Great, next.’ I could stand to ‘stop and smell the roses’ more while I write, and actually see what else I can do to improve a scene.

(also if I use a word once it sticks in my head I end up using it like 5 other times in a scene and don’t notice lol, I need to stop that)

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

All for it! Depends how it’s done though. I personally find long scenes of dialogue where you have to constantly jump down to the author’s notes for the translations to be distracting. I like when it’s integrated more naturally where actual translations aren’t super important. Like in River Grit, Billy overhears this little exchange between Goodnight and his childhood nanny:

“Ah c’est vrai, mon petit Bonsoir! J’en peux pas le croire!” she cried out and laughed as she embraced Goody. Billy realized with a start that he actually recognized one of the words: ‘Bonsoir’. Goodnight. (insert brief flashback of Goody teaching him the nickname) / “Ma Serafine,” Goodnight said with a laugh. “C’est vrai que tu ne vieillis pas. Tu vas me rendre jaloux, heh?” / Billy had no idea what Goodnight was saying, but he sure as hell recognized Goodnight’s tone for flattery, and it was confirmed when the old woman laughed and smacked his arm.

What they’re actually saying is: “Oh it’s true, my little Goodnight! I can’t believe it!” / “My Serafine, it’s true you never age. You’re going to make me jealous”. But it doesn’t matter because this fic is from Billy’s POV so it’s about how he experiences the language around him, which is why I wouldn’t have included a translation for the reader. If you understand it then it’s a bonus, but the words themselves aren’t really the point! 

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

That lil Lord of the Rings fic.

19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

Hmm for Mag7 I’ve always liked River Grit and love how it turned out. I also think Ashes feels very complete as a fic and I liked the flashback format. And while it’s not my favourite fic, in hindsight I’m impressed with the Kingsman football fic and how I had to write about 5 different soccer games and make them all feel different and exciting, and not just some variation of ‘He kicked the ball!’ I’m really pleased with how those sequences all turned out.

so i’ve MOSTLY written the witcher/dead by daylight/until dawn, but i have 25 fandoms with currently published works. yikes

-number one is a stupid fic with a polyamorous ship (+ a trans character) for a fandom i no longer care about and a book series i really hate. i regret writing it (and have said so in the notes), i was at a place in my life where i wanted to write this incredibly self-indulgent thing after diving headfirst into canon, and now rereading it with a critical eye, it just makes me annoyed.

-number two is, SOMEHOW, the geraskier scent kink fic?! i don’t understand how this has more kudos than some of my other fics!!!!! people really love smut huh

i try to respond to all comments that aren’t anonymous! like elle said, I appreciate it more when people notice an obscure reference or something. I think the one word/emoji comments are still nice but they don’t personally have much of an impact on me. and all this being said, i am perpetually behind on my comment replies I currently have 246 to do 😔😔😔

i love crossovers i think theyre very fun! i wrote an (unpublished) crossover where deadpool and cable are the superhero identities of face and hannibal from the a-team. it was a birthday gift to a friend and it was VERY indulgent especially with the non-linear timeline (because cable) but whatever, i reread it recently and it still slaps

idk.. i like my dialogue!

scene transitions, endings, editing out scenes that aren’t cohesive and don’t contribute anything but I love Them Your Honour, falling into the same boring writing style with each sentence having the exact same structure

i think it needs to be done correctly and there has to be a reason for it

it’s really hard for me to choose only one answer here 😔 I really like my laegjarn/fjorm stuff and the ocean’s eleven fic i wrote, and i LOVE the dialogue in my veep fics <3 for dead by daylight i’m still proud of my jake/evan summer camp slasher AU! and i like most of my witcher fics, i’m really excited about some things i have in the works right now.

claire my sweet 💗 can you tell us anything about how you came up with the idea for the traveler and how you planned it out?? I’m so bad at planning and I am simply scraping for crumbs from wiser writers than I 💞 xx cris :)

last november i rewatched kingsman, before i had ever met any of the lovely mutuals who now continue to motivate me in writing the traveler 🥺

the first rewatch, i developed that thaaang for cowboys, but i still wasn’t much of a writer (see: 1k-ish oneshots were long for me to write)

at the very beginning of march, i knew i wanted to write something romantic. i rewatched kingsman again and i knew it had to be jack, it had to be historical (because that’s where it’s at for me; ever since i was little i’ve had a knack for antiques and heritage homes and the way of life back then)

so there we get the old timey aspect. at first i was going to write a music man au, where jack was a swindling salesman who woos the women in each town he visits who are smart enough to see through him. the music man (i played marian in theatre when i was younger!) is set in 1912, but the inspiration from that wasn’t working so much.

it turned into a western, another thing that’s one of my big loves. we still get the same timeframe, horses, liberties from the lawlessness. western movies and stories have been very dear to me, and again, red dead redemption— watching my brother play through the towns and laughing with him whenever he “antagonized” npc’s.

western is a broader genre, which gave me more room to create and make it my own. i thought “oh my god historical romance,” “oh my god gunfights and jack being competent with the ropes,” and “oh my god i can manipulate anything i want to fit into this little world.” fits for him! he’s a cowboy at heart, but i wanted to make sure i was writing “jack” and not just a sort of “pedro pascal faceclaim” in a western story simply because i wanted to. many of the canon tie-ins are still to come, but i hope he comes off at least a little like the real character.

the traveler isn’t based on any one movie or song or show or game. it’s what’s just been pulled together through my research and experiences throughout life!

i chose 1907 based off of red dead redemption 1, not too far back in time, but a decent while ago. and at this point, jack no longer had a backstory. we’re yet to see what it truly is so i can’t say much here, but it’s all COMING.

i did a lot of researching on how i could possibly keep jack and reader close to each other to create a romance— i initially thought she might be the schoolmarm, but it didn’t seem to me like a travelling cowboy would hang around a children’s school so much to be able to fall in love with her (yikes)

it’s basically born out of my jumble of interests in romance, westerns, historical stories (the DRAMA)

so through my research and looking through what made up frontier/pioneer/western towns, i read “boarding house” and it clicked.

in the very first drafts, mrs. adler was mrs. jamieson— who had two grandchildren that reader also took care of. i decided to not write children into this, and changed her name to something simpler to read as she’s mentioned quite a bit.

this is also how i keep mentions of parents and family out of it— reader simply works for mrs. adler to help run the house for visitors, and in return gets her own room to stay in. so in comes jack, looking for his room.

from there— i thought of things i wanted out of it. i wanted a man who pursues reader, one who can protect and romance and WOO her!!!!

i wanted a scene where he shows off his skill: we get the poker fight that he de-escalates.

and some scenes simply came from a line i wanted someone to say! “tell me i’m not just mr. daniels to you” is an example. it’s been sort of hard that way— you, cris my angel, know that i restarted the entire story after writing 9k words.

what helps me continue is how i’ve set myself up; i have a broad plot that i know i will cover, and everything in between goes towards relationship development, world building, bond building. sylvie my beloved received her name because i’ve loved that name forever, and i only later realized it fits into canon: jack’s jet is called the silver pony.

some scenes now might seem like filler or for fun, but i promise they’re going to come back!

it’s my first time writing a multi-chapter, writing something over 4 thousand words, and writing something that develops.

but at the bottom line: everything has a reason!

If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? was gonna say one but i’ve written TWO !! kingsman/bodyguard was a crossover ship i thought up way before rocketman released with two of my besties and while i dont write for it anymore i sure hope people Are still writing for it (also i take full credit for publishing the first story in the eggvid tag and getting the ball rolling. thank me.) and xmen/lucifer. my second part in the charlifer series is still in the works maybe ill be able to finish it at some point

Have you ever received hate on a fic? on ao3 no, but when i was a kid i used to write on ff.net and while i got a shitton of comments (im talking like in the Hundreds) more than 50% of them were not good. i think i deserved it cos my writing was shitty but also ff.net is a dark, dark place

Do you write smut? If so what kind? sometimes if it fits into the storyline of the fic i guess? i actually absolutely detest writing smut i wrote smut for the mummy au not bc i like writing it but bc i felt bad for putting charles through so much shit in that fic i was like he deserves to get good dick for once. and then i promptly ruined it in the next few chapters so

Have you ever had a fic stolen? YEA LMGFHFJ it was my apoc charles au where charles is one of the horsemen, there was a fic that was VERY similar, like IDENTICAL, and the similarities were just too much for it to be coincidental. i never did call them out on it tho bc their fic was good too. probably bc it was stolen FROM ME

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? i am so proud of my cherik man from uncle au not just bc i think the cherik dynamic i wrote is fantastic in there (humble i know) but also because i loved writing raven in it. i think its like the Only fic where i didn’t just focus on cherik and it actually led me to realise i love writing sapphics- also it gave me an opportunity to fix charles-raven in my own little way and turn them from siblings to best friends and partners in crime which was really fun. anyway i love that fic and i love my gay little spies

hypothetically, if I were to write a fix-it/rewrite au fic, (thinking of starting at s5 but debating starting earlier) what are some storylines you’d take out/change, characters you’d save/kill, and specifically changes to sam’s character/arcs you’d like bc i need ideas

• s8: uh. rough start. idk why the turn tables so suddenly and dean's like "why didnt u look for me >:((" bc??? yall agreed not to???? at the VERY least they couldve had sam been like "I legitimately had no reason to think u werent dead and in heaven and tha wouldve been a little rude of me to pull u out of that." but we went for ~drama~ to make it spicy I guess. ouygh. bunkers there!!! that was cool!!! • s9: uhh... hated gadreel! hated that shit! wish they had spun that whole storyline to be more "hey sam I noticed u were s*icidal should we maybe address that??" or even like.... I mean dean probably couldve just TOLD sam abt his plan, he had already convinced him to stay alive by that point??? there was no reason to lie!!! plus the betrayal of gadreel not being who he said he was wouldve been like. literally enough drama, we didnt need to fracture the team again. and cas was??? where exactly??? be was human for at least half of that season but hey didnt know what to do w him so they chucked him in a convenience store??? good lord.

2. What’s a guilty pleasure you read/write?

Hmmmm, I think that's a tough one to answer and depends on the fandom and in a big fandom like SW, may depend on the characters. Right now, I'm reading a lot of Obi-Wan-centric fics and I'm really enjoying time-travel fix-it stories. If I'm reading Din/Luke, I love the arranged marriage stories. If it's SkySolo, pining/angst (but not infidelity - more that Han never hooks up with Leia). Qui/Obi - A/B/O and/or slave fics (the old Master/Apprentice archive is loading with gems). If I am reading Obikin, it kind of has to be out of the SW/GFFA universe and a modern AU unless I know the author's work.

As for writing, my guilty pleasure is (wait for it) kitten fic. I may have written kitten fic in every fandom I've been in (so I guess there will be a Din/Luke kitten fic in the future). Second guilty pleasure, wingfic. Third guilty pleasure, masturbation fic (I know, I know...there's a real bad joke there). I have written A LOT of wank fic. You asked, okay? ;)

12. Which fic are you the most proud of and why?

This is a hard question to answer, because I love all my fics. Been writing for a long time and I've got a lot of stories under my belt. I am seriously proud of my current WP, The Stars Across the Sky Like the Scars Across Your Skin. But I also want to give a shout out to some older fandoms. There is my time travel epic for The Flash, The Truth Out of a Lie, which is the fastest (ha!) and longest completed story I've written - nearly 160k in about 10 weeks. I don't think I could do that again. I'm not proud of it for the length or speed of the writing, but for the intricacy of the plotting and how everything tied together.

I also am extremely proud of what will likely be my last Kingsman fic, A Song of Blessing and Comfort. This one was pure self-indulgence, which means, for me, delightful OCs. I usually don't create OCs but Harry Hart needed a family and I love the one I gave him.

And no self-rec list would be complete without something from my oldest and dearest fandom, White Collar - Don't Ask, Don't Tell/Don't Ask, Don't Care. This one was written in 2012, in honor of the lifting of the ban on LGBT members of the US armed services. It also has one of the hottest sex scenes I've ever written.

20. What is something that you know more than you will ever need to because you’ve done copious amounts of research about it for a fic?

Oh yeah. It seems that almost all of my fics require serious research. Devil is in the details, right? I know a lot about healthcare in various countries because I have written so much hurt/comfort. Also, antique bookbinding and fore-edge painting. How to shoe shire horses. Enamel miniatures. How to wiretap. How to repair a medieval tapestry.

Rarely does any of that information makes it into the actual story, but knowing how its done lends veracity to the character's actions.

Hello DeepShadows2 and welcome to Behind the Quill, I am pleased to have this chance to chat with you.

Many of our group’s members will know you as part of our Mod team but they might also know you as the author of Peculiar and of Good Night, Sweet Prince (written for our last Prompt Week of 2020!)

Okay, let’s jump right in. What's the story behind your pen name? 

I grew up in the martial arts and my 'warrior name' was 'kage urufu' or Shadow Wolf.  When I was in Creative Writing in high school, someone else was writing under that pen name, and they were more popular, and I was told I 'wasn't allowed to copy her name' by our teacher. So I went back and forth between some names and finally came up with DeepShadows. It is because during karate Kamp's ninja night games I would find the darkest spots in the camp and wait to sneak attack my enemies to steal their flags. The 2 comes from the fact that my first ever FF.net account got deleted because I put up lemons there instead of AFF.net.

Which Harry Potter character do you identify with the most?

Honestly, it is a mix between Severus, Draco, and Minerva. Each in their own way was in positions they would have rather not been in at one point in time, but made the best of those situations. Do you have a favourite genre to read? (not in fic, just in general) Strangely enough, I am really into my 70s Feminist Sci-Fi. Like Darkover and Tanith Lee's 'Don't Bite the Sun' Series. As for Fic, I am into many scenarios and it changes according to my mood. Recently I've been into fluff slice of life.

Do you have a favourite "classic" novel?

Oof. Asking me to pick solely one is a crime. I have always loved Gone with the Wind. If I had to point at one, it would have to be it. But I honestly went over 15 titles in my head trying to decide which one would be the winner. 

At what age did you start writing?

I have been telling stories and writing them since I was young. I could read and write at age 4 because my grandmother wanted me to be ready for school. My first written story was at 5 ish and I still have my Crayola blue five-line story about a Unicorn named Pepper.

How did you get into writing fanfiction? 

I got into fanfiction when I discovered that ff.net existed. My first fanfic is still up there under this pen name, but it is miles and leagues from my current quality. Spelling is still atrocious though.

What's the best theme you've ever come across in a fic? Is it a theme represented in your own works?

Honestly, hard to say. I love post-war fics. I love when the narrative is close to canon, but uniquely not, so it handles like it is an extension of the world and not a separate world. 

Theme wise, I am a sucker for hard-hitting drama.

What fandoms are you involved in other than Harry Potter?

I was into Kingsman, but not as a fic writer, but a Tumblr role-player. It's been a while, so mostly now I'm just back to being a Potterhead. It's where I began and where I always come back to.

If you could make one change to canon, what would it be? Do you have a favourite piece of fanon?

Snape lives! You cannot tell me that a POTIONS MASTER who spends ALL DAY every day keeping students from POISONING themselves and who personally makes BLOOD REPLENISHERS for the infirmary would not have been prepared for an attack from Nagini. It is not secret knowledge that Drama King Voldy likes to have her do his dirty work and Severus would have been prepared for the off chance he was discovered and attacked. He lived.

My favourite piece of Fanon.... hmm... I like a lot of Fanon.  It's hard to put my finger on just one piece that I enjoy.

Do you listen to music when you write or do you prefer quiet? 

Music! Nearly all of Peculiar was written to Folklore by Taylor Swift.

What are your favourite fanfictions of all time?

Cake and a Cup of Tea by Cybelle Somewhere I belong by .... I can't remember Not Only a Granger by my friend Ferporcel

Are you a plotter or a pantser? How does that affect your writing process?

I am a Pantser. I have beats and thematic key points I know I want to hit, but the characters sort of fill out the story as I go. Sometimes I surprise myself with where I end up and I love that. Example: Draco/Krum was a total accident in Peculiar, but I love everything about it. 

What is your writing genre of choice?

Hurt/Comfort and Drama/Angst

Which of your stories are you most proud of? Why?

Peculiar and Good Night, Sweet Prince.

Did it unfold as you imagined it or did you find the unexpected cropped up as you wrote? What did you learn from writing it?

Oh, my goodness, the unexpected cropped up. Peculiar was only supposed to be a 25 chapter post-war, post-divorce AU that turned into this beautiful beast. Characters were created as I went, and some side characters became major plot devices or turning points. I learned that sometimes my brain knows what it is doing before I know what it is doing. There were hints and notes of what was going on that I wasn't even aware.

How personal is the story to you, and do you think that made it harder or easier to write?

There are points that are special to me.  It made it easier and harder to write.  Having experience with some subjects Hermione goes through makes it easier to translate the emotions into words, but simultaneously, some of those factors are trauma-based and I had to navigate myself through.

What books or authors have influenced you? How do you think that shows in your writing?

I draw influence from everything I read. That is a key reason I don't read anything similar to my current work while writing because I don't want to accidentally lift from someone else. 

Do people in your everyday life know you write fanfiction?

Two of my roommates are readers and I get people barging into my room after a post a chapter yelling 'OH MY GOD'. I also have a typed and printed review handed in person to me by my roommate that is on my inspiration board where she says 'Fuck you, but with love'. My entire friend group knows I write fanfiction and I get some of them to read it from time to time. My mom won't read peculiar until it is finished because she doesn't want to nag me for chapters.

How true for you is the notion of "writing for yourself"? 

YES! I started Peculiar because I couldn't find what I was looking for. I wanted a high emotion, high stakes, drama and background rich fanfiction in which Hermione has completely broken and has given up on herself. Where she has nothing and no one and has lost that spark in her. I wanted Ron bashing where he is a villain and yet isn't the same time. I wanted Severus to be indifferent to her at first and slowly discover her suffering and set out to help her for the sake of the school, and it develops into more through feelings severed early on just after the war. I wanted her to have to overcome trauma and recover for herself, not for Severus, but instead with him and that they heal from their past together while facing continuous challenges that attempt to tear them apart. Along with other factors that haven't come to be yet, so I won't want to spoil.

How important is it for you to interact with your audience? How do you engage with them? Just at the point of publishing? Through social media?

I love my audience. It actually brought me here. Shout out to Geek and Tattoo for bringing me to this group’s Discord server. I answer every comment, I respond to any statements or comments I notice on social media. I'm an open person with my audience, which is why when I had to go on hiatus, I told them exactly what was going on.

What is the best advice you've received about writing?

Write what feels best. If you don't like what you are writing, no one else is going to.  If you don't want to write a certain scene but you need it, write an article or a letter about it. 

What do you do when you hit writer's block?

I cry. Then I put on the music that inspired the story/scene and I pace my room, going over the potential dialogue and basically acting out what I think should happen until it sounds right.

Has anything in real life trickled down into your writing?

Yes. Many of my OC characters are modelled after some of my real-life friends. And some other events have easily transitioned into events that Hermione and Severus have gone through.

Do you have any stories in the works? Can you give us a teaser?

I am currently writing the next chapter for Peculiar. I won't give a teaser, but I will say that Hermione and Severus give Rita Skeeter a delicious taste of revenge.

Any words of encouragement to other writers?

Don't stop, but also be kind to yourself. Not every writing session is going to be your best, but you won't have better days if you give up. Also, if someone doesn't like what you write, forget them, as long as you are happy with it, that is what matters.

SZPURKA'S FIC RECS 1 – HARTWIN EDITION

I’m starting my #CommentForChristmas bullshit with one of my oldest fandoms - the Kingsman fandom that I watched die after the second movie which I’m forever sad about because Kingsman: The Secret Service is my favourite movie. It was also the first fandom I was active in and the first fandom that made me realize fandoms can be a safe space and most of the people there were lovely and awesome and cool and because there Hartwin was the major ship there was little to no ship wars and hate on ships I could see in some of the major fandoms and I hated it and I hate it now, please we all like fanfics and fanarts and different ships, why must we fight all the time instead of encourage each other?

I hold the Hartwin ship and Kingsman fandom close to my heart and that’s why I started with this. They’re not all the fics from my bookmarks, because I honestly don’t remember some of them, because I read them so long ago, but there are some fics I hold close to my heart and after reading a lot of different fic and being in a lot of fandoms, I still love them deeply and I hope you can find something for yourself and made it read some of the stories I mention and give the authors some more love :D

3.  Are there any particular aus or plots that you’d really like to write?

I want to do more stuff in my Kingsman AU :))) If not that then something that’s set in period times/actual time travel. Also I’m not opposed to murder mystery-style one-shots. It’s a fave. And, hey, any instances where Giles can fight something is always fun.

5.  What is the most difficult thing about writing your current muse?

Picking the words he’d use, tbh. He talks funny. Not as funny as Jeeves, but Giles has a rhythm of speaking that sometimes make you go huh? Now I find it isn’t necessarily because you need a thesaurus to understand him--it’s more to do with his long, expository lines. I have to draw as many contextual knowledge as I can about the situation I’m writing because, well, exposition man needs to expound. Other than that I think I’ve got it down. I hope. I dunno.
