Shadow cupped his mate’s cheek gently. “I know.” He paused, fighting the pain and despair that shot through his chest at the mere thought of what he was about to say. “When this is over, we’ll review all the information Knuckles has. We’ll ask Tails for help. We’ll find out everything we can. And we… we can still be together, just… without the bond.”

Sonic’s eyes opened wide in surprise. “You…. You would give up the bond?”

Shadow smiled sadly, thumb brushing over the short peach fur on Sonic’s muzzle. “I would rather see you happy for 60 or 70 years, than see you heartbroken for an eternity.”

Sonic’s gaze fell, gut twisting at the potential loss, not knowing which would hurt worse. Losing his connection to Shadow, knowing how the other would suffer after he was gone, or… losing everyone he’d ever loved.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again
