i fully went into this series just ready for jafirst but it's actually a super sweet nostalgic series and even though it's set a bit earlier than my time as a teenager, all the stories it's telling is so heart-felt.

em being being so welcoming of name, integrating him into their group and all of them not even caring that he's won't speak, just that they play with him. only to have all of them leave him behind to go onto bigger and better things like university. i can't imagine finally finding a group of people who are willing to accept who you are and then all of them leaving at the same time. and they promise they will keep in contact, but slowly the conversations get shorter and shorter and it's just too hard sitting and waiting for them to not be busy and have time for you.

all of the parents who want the best for their children but what the 'best' entails varies between what they think is best and what their children want. the delicate balancing act of indulging your child so they understand they are loved but also being disciplined enough to make sure they grow and not coddle them too much. sometimes it's just a lot of reponsibility to ask for a parent, and something i think that gets forgotten easily is that people expect parents to be so focused on their children, that they can't live a life of their own, but once they children is out of the picture then what?

probably my favourite storyline is champ. back home he had everything, a loving family, wealth and loyal friends. now he's alone, studying his ass off, and so isolated from his support system. he's constantly worried about his grandpa, his health and like he's running out of time with him but his grandpa is also worried about him just as much about his happiness, his studies and to do what's best for him. it's such a beautiful relationship and the grandpa better not die in this istg.

gun and golf are just too perfect, there is literally nothing i love more than first love, no matter how stupidly unrealistic. i want what these motherfuckers have, i don't care i don't care.

VERY IMPORTANT a dam in the Netherlands, the weerdsluis lock, is directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. They have a worker stationed there to open the door for the fish, but they can take a while to open it. So to keep the fish from getting preyed on by birds they installed a doorbell. Only, the fish don't have hands to ring the doorbell. If you go to their website, they have a LIVE CAMERA AND A DOORBELL that YOU RING FOR THE FISH when they're waiting, and then the dam worker opens the door for them! I can't express how obsessed I am with this. look at this shit. oh my god.

Please check on the fish doorbell once in a while :)

When I was young my dad offhandedly told me he thought people treated fish with so much casual cruelty because fish can’t scream.

The words branded themselves across my soul.

As an adult I think he may have been joking. He payed no especial attention to any indignities fish suffered in our household but I could never forget. I saw fish in a different light after that.

Fish kept in tiny bowls, breathing their own poisons, dying by inches. Fish kept in cold tanks, casually disposed of. Fish touted as being short lived when they could outlive the better loved family dog if only they could breathe. Fish casually won and discarded in cheap plastic bags, thrown away a week later.

How they would scream, if they could.
