In light of recent comments regarding Viktors sexuality I want to point out a vital part that imo is missing from this discussion - and that is how Viktors disability and disease, and more specifically his chronic pain play into his sexuality. To get this out of the way, I just want to reiterate what other people have correctly pointed out: 1. Asexual does not mean the same as aromantic, and neither one of those two things mean, that you will never have sex. In fact, you cannot generally assume anything about what a person does and does not do in their relationships, simply from them stating that they are asexual. 2. We are not talking about a human being, but a character. Which to me makes assigning anything to them that is not either explicitly in the text or very heavily implied by it, not count for more or less than a headcanon. Especially if you are the creator and what you have created contradicts your own statement ( I am not saying you can't hc Viktor as ace, but I am not shying away from saying that I believe there are definitive sexual undertones present in his interactions with Jayce either) Now, back to what I feel is completely missing from this conversation: How chronic pain affects sexuality. Because the show provides much better evidence for that being the thing influencing Viktor, than a matter of sexual orientation. This bugs me, because first of all, the potential for meaningful exploration of said topic is huge. Secondly, it matters to me as someone who considers herself to be both on the ace spectrum, (while being in a relationship with someone who isn't) and having experienced several years of chronic pain. I know for a fact, that when my body was hurting a lot it played a massive role in my willingness to engage in any form of physical touch - not just sex. The reason why I can even distinguish between a low sex drive, and not wanting to be touched intimately due to pain, is because I have experienced years with chronic pain and years without it. But during the years I had it, on the bad days, the reason became blurred and ultimately irrelevant. What I am saying is - those two things can become indistinguishable - so to talk about Viktors sexual orientation, without factoring in how he was shown to be suffering and slowly dying for most of the story, is missing out on one of the most important facets of his character and instead focusing on one that was never even halfheartedly suggested by the show. I also think, that if Viktor was truly asexual in the way CL believes asexuality works, showing him without genitals in S2 after fusing with the hexcore would be a bit tasteless, no? Whereas, if it's a matter of losing agency over another aspect of his body, it's tragic, but fitting. I hope you can see that I am not coming from a place of being against headcanoning Viktor as ace, but wanting to criticize the particular way a certain someone does it and the dumb reasoning behind it. (side note, whispering this under my breath: if you wanted to have visible asexual representation, why would you write one of the first things to come to the allegedly asexuals characters mind, be "wait this isn't my bedroom"? Are you okay, bro?)

my thoughts on dbh as someone entering the fandom in 2024

so just got into the dbh fandom like in aug 2024. i have watched too much gameplay, read the wiki extensively, read an obscene amount of fanfics on ao3, and am in the process of writing my own. here are some of my thoughts (that no one has asked for):

every fanfic writer who started in 2018 and is still updating their works in 2024 are literal saints and some of the best damn writers i ever did saw and the dedication is fucking unreal. one fic had almost 2 million words??????? like BRUH. some are still ongoing and updated this year?? the dbh fandom in ao3 is not thriving as much as it was in 2018 (i say this purely as someone who's looking at the hits/kudos/comment ratios on older v. new works) but they are still alive!!!!

i am puzzled with the obsession with gavin reed. there are like a million fics that feature him and rk900. i am confused bc he did not seem like a redeeming character at all in my opinion and idk, i think he's just an asshole. i like the redemption arcs some ppl write for him but i just can't with him. i mean you ship who you wanna ship but i am not a reed fan and i am confused how he became so popular when all he did was bully our poor boi connor.

i personally don't ship hank x connor bc they give strong father-son vibes in the canon. however, i am obsessed with how jolli_bean writes the pairing on ao3 since its usually a canon divergence or an AU so the pair meet later in life. there are some fics that follow the canon and do a pretty good job with the pairing, but i just tend to keep it familial between them in my head. (but like i said, ship who you want to ship)

i am glad there's a vague consensus that we all wished alice stayed a human bc i feel like that lends itself to a more interesting narrative post-game. tho i guess her being an android is fine bc now kara, luthor, and alice can live as one happy family in canada forvever lol

i am literally obsessed with bryan dechart's acting as connor. like if you haven't seen him play connor in real life for the interactive #detroit2038 premiere event, then you gotta watch some of the live stream. like he doesn't break character the whole time and his physicality just screams connor and i just really appreciate how much effort he put in as an actor to really embody the character. just so impressive and i wish there was more bts of him acting as connor bc its just so nuanced and ugh *chef's kiss* if they ever made a live action dbh it would be impossible for anyone else to play connor

i love the 28 stab wounds meme. when i watched that scene for the first time it was so jarring lmao

i also love how everyone is like yes, we all know connor likes dogs but he also likes fish bc of that one fish you can save in the very first minute of gameplay hahahah. (his name is dewey and it is vitally important you save him). i also appreciate how the "i like dogs" line will undoubtedly find it's way into every fic possible lol

i think the love for simon is very good and well and amazing but i think josh deserves more love in fics too

i love how the fandom just latched onto rk900 and rk800-60 and fleshed out their personalities and i love reading ppl's interpretation of these characters and how they incorporate them into their stories. it's funny they only show up like one time and ppl just ran with it and it's so fun and creative and i love it.

i love the hc that chloe deviated when connor chose not to shoot her. that's the best hc. like it's canon in my heart idc

bless all the fic writers who have mastered the art of explaining how androids mind and bodies work bc there are so many gaps and possibilities left open in the lore and it's incredible to see what ppl come up with or interpret based off the canon. (i still feel 50/50 about when they make deviants feel pain cause like androids not feeling pain is such a big part of the canon and yeah i'll give it a pass if the fic does it for the whumps and the angst but i prefer when a fic finds a canon-compliant reason for deviants to feel pain, even if its just like they got a chip or software installed that makes them feel pain or something)

every pairing that i find in this fandom, i tend to be like... "yeah i can see that." (with the exception of hank x connor for reasons i stated in #3). i'm still like ehhh on reed900 or even gavin x connor bc i just don't think it makes sense in the canon but if it's written well i just shrug and say yeah i guess i could see that. some rarepairs i ended up absolutely adoring were chloe x north and rk900 x north (i realize they're both north but she has such good potential for character dynamics)

idk if it's just me bc i specifically look for fics centered around connor, but i feel like there's not a lot of love for kara at least fic-wise. ig it's cause she kinda just leaves so it's easy to not include her. tbh, i am quite well-versed in markus' and connor's stories but i haven't really explored a lot of kara's. i plan on playing dbh with my partner when i see them again in a couple months and i wanted us to take turn playing different characters and i wanted to play kara's storyline so i've been avoiding it for the most part so i can be surprised with my options. plus, in my wip fic, kara is in canada so she's not really relevant to my story which is why i have in depth knowledge about markus and connor and less on kara.

the music in this game fucking SLAPS. 10/10 kara's theme makes me wanna cry.

okay, there is a common trope in the dbh fanfics where connor loses his memory and that shit gets me everytime. i'm always bawling and anxiously waiting for him to fucking REMEMBER and i hate and love it and eat it up every. single. time. usually, the memory loss happens early in the fic and it's pretty expected but sometimes i get blindsided and i'm like FUCK not this shit again but i can't stop reading it and the angst is so palpable.

i think it's so interesting how ra9 is just like this mystery in the lore that never gets entirely explained in the game. it's like something you can totally kinda ignore but it does have interesting lore implications if you decide to really think about it.

i adore all the characters in dbh equally except for connor who is the certified best boi and my absolute favorite (no one is shocked by this declaration). and the characters on my shit list are zlatko, todd, and sometimes reed.

this is an obnoxiously long post and i apologies. i haven't been on tumblr in years and i just had so many thoughts about dbh and i have no friends to talk to so i decided to dump it all here. i still have more thoughts but those are the ones that come to the forefront of my mind.

Tim, in this AU, usually kept his hair up. Therefore, it's not a stretch to say he didn't tell the others how vital his hair was to his self-worth, connection to his parents, or reassurance that he's loved. Perhaps, in their ignorance, they even made comments on how Tim keeps his hair so long or seems to spend longer getting ready. It was meant as light-hearted teasing because they didn't know just how important his hair is to him.

The reveal for this AU depends on how much drama, tension, and angst you want.

Does it happen immediately after? If so, it might take awhile for Jason or Damian to care (just cause they don't like Tim at this point). There might be a wee bit of "damn" in their minds, but they have the realization much latter of how fucked up it was.

Does it happen after Tim has already forgiven Jason? Jason may not realize it's something he needs to apologize for and goes through the angst of thinking they aren't doing as good as he thought. Tim doesn't blame Jason because Tim made the choice to cut his hair. He was upset, which he's over by this point, but he never blamed Jason. However, Jason now blames himself and will need to work to forgive himself.

Now. How do the Bats respond/feel about this reveal?

As far as Dick and Damian, have you read the fic "Mama Bird (but its your big brother ready to fight god)" by Yellow_sprouts? The fic is by a Tumblr account I adore on here @batfambrainrotbeloved. Anyways, I love their concepts for chapter 4 here. It examines how Dick and Damian, due to their cultures and upbringing, see hair as something to cherish and spend time taking care of.

While in this hc/au I didn't tie Tim's feelings about his hair to cultural/spiritual beliefs, feel free to hc that. On the other hand, I feel like Damian and Dick might understand more or differently due to their own cultural thoughts about hair. Even if Tim's treatment and care of his hair isn't related to cultural beliefs, they might still understand just how important it is (especially if they grew up with their own loved ones [Mary and John Grayson and Talia] washing their hair, taking time to teach them about different products/treatment, and making the entire process a bonding/loving moment). It would be a huge deal if, after Damian and Tim start getting along, Damian offers to help Tim with his hair (which has grown quite a bit by this time).

Jason can also be tied into the cultural understanding if you'd like, or he could just process it as taking another thing from Tim he didn't realize was precious. If Jason also comes from a culture that cherishes hair, lots of angst to be explored there (maybe his feelings about commiting such a taboo but originally justifying it because hair probably doesn't mean the same thing to Tim). Jason having cultural or spiritual ties to hair could also fuck with his mental state and that white stripe. How can he do his self-care routines to the reminder of all that he's suffered through?

Cass has known from the beginning how much Tim's hair means to him. For timeline sake, let's say she appeared to the Bats after TT (otherwise, she would have hunted Jason down to beat his ass up). The two of them from the start use hair as a way to bond.

David Cain probably never taught Cass to value herself in that way. It's nice for Tim and Cass because no words are needed. They can feel the love and comfort through the actions and soft touches. Cass is taught to value herself, that even something like her hair is worthy of time and dedication. She is human, even down to her hair follicles.

This act has nothing to do with her abilities. While she should feel pride and accomplishment for the strength it took to utilize abilities given to her through pain/abuse into something for herself, this activity is about Cass being herself. Tim cares about her and wants to show her that no matter what she can and can't do. Cass is gone often like Tim's parents, but this moment of hair care is a constant reassurance of theirs.

Steph and Babs find out later. Maybe they are told about it by Cass sooner than the big reveal, but they don't tie it to what happened at TT. They also don't want to intrude on the intimate familial bonding of Tim and Cass during this moment, so they never try to invite themselves to it. After the reveal, Barbara invites Tim, Cass, and Steph over for a self-care day. It's not necessarily about hair (so as to not pressure Tim to share), but Tim appreciates the gesture.

Bruce depends on if he's a good dad or not in this.

For good dad Bruce, he is the definition of "doesn't really understand but trying." He stalks the Drakes' old finance records to find out what products they used to keep some in stock at the Manor. He does a ton of research on hair care and cultures (and ends up learning about how it might be important to Dick and Damian). He may be a bit overbearing and cross boundaries (by inserting himself into Tim's routine), but he is trying. After Tim tells him to back off, he does.

For Bad Dad Bruce, he's an asshole about it. Maybe he makes some comment about how Tim shouldn't keep his hair long anyways since it's a liability >:(

Tim probably can't get himself to allow it to grow long again until Bruce gets lost in the timestream. By virtue of simply not having enough time to cut it properly, it grows out. He almost cuts it off before he returns to Gotham, but he remembers how happy Cass was for him that it was long again.

Her emotional and close relationship are realy important to her, so, if something bad happened to you it would worry and scare the shit out of her, and for that she use to be really protective, and in cases, even toxic -"Why are you going out at this hour?" "you didn´t tell me!"- so if you are a "spirit" free dude, belive me, this is not gonna be the most compatible realtionship.

Whit time and trust, she gonna be more chill about it, like when your parents accept that you are not a child and start to let you date, and even drink, so she won´t be weird and that worry about your well-being, she only want one thing: a text from time on time saying that you are okay, that´s all. Reyna already have lost so many people, she can´t risk loosing you too.

He is usually really down on himself, most insecure and distant. there is almost no diference between being his friend at being his lover, so please, patiente! Most of the figths are for not comunicate what he feels and that gonna be the biggest issue on the relationship, he doesn´t know how really say how he feel, so he just gonna feel lost on his own issues and want to do all for himself, going distant and even trating you poorly when he feels down (thing that ofc is wrong)

the only solution is time, he want time for process all of his trauma and lack of memories, and you would need time to process of how traumatized he is. If you really want to keep him by your side it gonna required a lot of comunication and silence, sometimes the silence is better than the deaf words, he want that, not empty words. He gonna be kniting and thinking, leeting the stress out, and you? by his side doing something by your own. Understand the others need gonna be the damn key, and he really NEED to feel like you understand.

Bussy, bussy bussy (haha pussy), he usually want to be free of the work, but is his only financial income and he doens´t want to think on his personal stuff, so he usually hide himselft on it. The main problem is not when he is out, he is attentive, text you, send you pics when he can, and try to be in your arms all the time he can, but when he is you he have almost 10% batery on, only craving sleep, cuddling and being spoiled, sound cute, but when is always like that is usaully tiring and feel like you are his nany more than a partner, and this can lead to figths, figths that he would feel like invalid or overreacting, and that word gonna piss you off.

This could lead to a break up or a main inconvenience that yes or YES gotta be talked deeply, but guess, OH! he is to tired for argue.

nnt hc: Demon Thermoregulation

Seeing as it has been featured in multiple of my fics now, I figured it was about time to actually develop and explain this headcanon :)

The short explanation of this headcanon is that the demons' thermoregulation works counteractive against the temperature of the environment. This means, you could say that it works reverse to human thermoregulation; demons go hot in cold environments and cold in hot environments. Of course, that is just the short, simplified answer. The long answer is a bit more complicated (because biology~), especially when you consider the differences between the Demon Realm (the demons' "natural habitat") and Britannia. So, that's what I'm going to explore more in this post.

Quick note: I will from here on talk like these are actual facts about the nnt demons, but it is, of course, just my headcanon :)

How does it work? (biology)

First of all, for those not familiar with the term, thermoregulation is defined as "the maintenance or regulation of temperature", and does in this case, specifically refer to the maintenance of a particular body temperature. Maintaining a stable temperature (within a certain range!) is crucial in order to keep the body functioning as it should. If the body temperature goes too low or too high, bad things happen (e.g. water freezing inside cells or vital enzymes and proteins breaking down). But what exactly that ideal temperature is, and how narrow of a range it allows, differs between different animals (e.g. in humans a normal body temperature is around 36-37°C (97-99°F).

Demons, having a different biology, also have a different ideal body temperature than humans. But before we get into that, I want to quickly talk about normal (or "real" if you will) thermoregulation, to help us better understand this headcanon. (If you absolutely do not care about this, just skip this next paragraph).

When it comes to thermoregulation in our world, animals can broadly be divided into two groups: endotherms (warm-blooded) and ectotherms (cold-blooded). Of course, there are exceptions to every rule and there are some animals that blur this line, but those aren't important here (this isn't a biology lesson, it's a hc demon biology lesson). Endotherms/warm-blooded animals, like humans and most mammals, rely on internal mechanisms to maintain their ideal body temperature. While they are still affected by the temperature of the environment, they are not dependent on the environment to regulate their own temperature. Instead, they achieve this by changing the amount of heat production and/or heat loss they experience. Ectotherms/cold-blooded animals, like reptiles and amphibians, on the other hand, have a dependent relationship between body temperature and the temperature of the environment. Meaning that not only do their body temperature change with the temperature of the environment, but they also rely on the environment to maintain their ideal body temperature. They regulate their body temperature, for example, through different behaviors such as basking in the sun (to raise their body temperature) or seeking shade (to lower their body temperature).

Demons are mostly considered endotherms/warm-blooded, because of how they regulate their body temperature. I did, however, once refer to them as "unorthodoxly cold-blooded" in an ask. This was because their relationship to the environment are more similar to ectotherms/cold-blooded animals (i.e. more dependent), despite the fact that they regulate their body temperature more in line with endotherms/warm-blooded animals (i.e. through internal mechanisms). So, yeah, demons are endotherms/warm-blooded, but not in the usual way. Now, this might sound a bit confusing, so let's take a closer look at what this means.

The biggest difference between demon and human thermoregulation (besides the ideal body temperature) is in how it is triggered. In humans, as you might know, the thermoregulation is triggered by changes in the body temperature itself. When a human is exposed to greater changes in the temperature of the environment, there is also a change in the body temperature (the body temperature is lowered in cold environments and raised in hot environments). These changes in the body temperature are detected by nerve cells called thermoreceptors. These thermoreceptors then send this information to the brain (specifically to the thermoregulatory center), which then responds with different mechanisms to either raise or lower the body temperature (depending on what is needed to maintain the ideal body temperature). In demons, on the other hand, the thermoregulation is triggered by changes in the temperature of the environment. These changes are detected by thermoreceptors located in the skin, which then (just like in humans) send information to the thermoregulatory center in the brain, which causes a response to change the body temperature through different mechanisms. Demon thermoregulation can, in other words, be described as preventative or counteractive. The demons' body temperature is raised or lowered in order to counteract the natural change in body temperature that occurs because of the temperature of the environment.

To give a concrete example: If a demon would go out into a colder environment, their thermoreceptors would warn their brain that the environment has gotten colder. Their body temperature would then be raised, through internal mechanisms, so that it would still end up at the ideal temperature when the body temperature is inevitably lowered by the coldness of the environment. In other words, the process would look the opposite to humans. A human's body temperature would go down (because of the temperature of the environment) and then back up (because of their thermoregulation), while a demon's body temperature would go up (because of their thermoregulation) and then back down (because of the temperature of the environment).

A lot of the mechanisms used in demon thermoregulation are similar to those in humans. These include: control of blood flow, metabolic activity, movements, and sweating. In order to raise the body temperature, demons restrict blood flow to the skin (to decrease heat loss to the environment), increase metabolic activity (to increase heat production), as well as experience behavioral changes like an increase in body movements (to increase heat production). In order to lower the body temperature, the opposite happens, demons increase blood flow to the skin (to increase heat loss), decrease metabolic activity (to decrease heat production), experience behavioral changes like more limited body movements (to decrease heat production), and sweat (to increase heat loss). However! Two things that do occur in humans but not in demons are shivering and goosebumps.

Demons don't shiver! (Is this part of the hc because the idea hit me and just wouldn't go away? Yes. But also-) Shivering, in humans, occurs as a reaction to a drop in body temperature and a need for more heat. One way to increase heat production is by increasing muscle activity, both voluntary (like rubbing one's hands together) and involuntary (like shivering). In other words, shivering is a means to raise the body temperature. But, since demon thermoregulation happens before the change in body temperature itself, shivering doesn't feel like it would be a really sustainable method for demons to raise their body temperature. I mean, they would be more or less constantly shivering whenever they're in colder-than-ideal environments. So, instead, they rely on other mechanisms to increase heat and raise the body temperature (see above), including voluntary muscle activity. Demons actually have a tendency to get hyperactive with their movements when in cold environments. How much movement, what kind, and how aware the demon themself is of these is also very individual.

Now, one could make a similar argument about sweating that I just made about shivering - and we have already established that demons do sweat - but I kinda disagree. I feel like there are more levels to sweating than there are to shivering. Meaning there would be less of a constant state of sweating and more of different levels of sweating that can be implemented in different situations, depending on the demon's current needs. Also demons are more used to adapting to hot environments and needing to lower their body temperature than they are to cold environments and needing to raise it (but more on this later). Furthermore, sweating in demons mostly occurs during the biggest changes in the temperature of the environment, and thus is used during situations that require a more rapid lowering of the body temperature. So, in other words, demons do sweat, but not as much as humans and just during specific circumstances. There are also differences between different types of demons, depending on what their respective ideal body temperatures are and what part(s) of the Demon Realm they live in.

Goosebumps! Just like shivering, goosebumps are also something demons don't experience. In humans, goosebumps are a (rather ineffective) attempt at trapping heat by raising the (very limited) body hair. A more effective example of trapping heat like this are birds fluffing their feathers. The same issues presented with shivering also apply to goosebumps. It just wouldn't be very sustainable (for most demons), considering how the demon thermoregulation works, that is, before the changes in body temperature itself. So, here as well, they rely on other mechanisms to raise their body temperature (again, see above). However, there are possibly some demons that do experience a raise of fur/hair or fluffing of feathers - but these demons would be ones with a much higher ideal body temperature, and wouldn't really be able to survive the colder winters in Britannia.

Why does it work like that? (need for heat)

Now that we've looked at the how, let's talk about the why. Like we've already established, demons, like other beings, have a need to maintain their body temperature within a certain range (to keep everything working properly). While there are differences between different demons, as a rule, the demons' ideal body temperature is higher than humans' (and the other races'). In other words, they also have a greater need for heat.

Okay, while this post isn't about headcanons about the Demon Realm's climate, I do wanna talk a bit about what kind of Demon Realm this hc is based upon (quick shout-out to @hihopelessromantics for discussing this with me <3). Because we know so little about this (the climate/temperature of the Demon Realm) in canon, but it plays a significant role in this hc. The Demon Realm is the demons' "natural habitat", meaning that their thermoregulation is adapted for that environment, and thus also works best under those conditions.

The Demon Realm is a hot environment. That is the basis of this hc, and also what I truly believe. I mean, we know of multiple demons who choose to walk around with little to no clothes in canon (and even if you could make the argument that their darkness might work as a substitute for clothes, some of them aren't wearing much of that either). So, yeah, the Demon Realm is hot. Of course, it is also a vast land, so it would only be natural to assume that there are some variations throughout the realm. Some parts are hotter, some are colder, but they can all be described as warm. And now comes the problem that "hot" and "warm" can also be subjective, depending on where you live and what kind of of climate/temperature you are used to - so, let's put it like this: the coldest parts of the Demon Realm are about the same temperature as a late spring/early fall in Britannia. And the hottest parts in the Demon Realm are volcanic and might be more or less inhabitable to your typical human.

Now, what does this "natural habitat" mean for the demons' thermoregulation? Well, for starters, it (and with it, their natural need for heat) means that the demons are more tolerant towards a rise in body temperature, rather than a drop in it. They can better handle hotter environments, and would have a less drastic reaction to the temperature of the environment going up (because they have less of a need to counter it). On the other hand, it also means that they are more sensitive to colder environments, especially environments that are colder than any found within the Demon Realm. These environments (like a full-blown Britannian winter) are not environments that demons would naturally encounter (although a lot of demons would/have visited Britannia), which means that they are prone to causing overreactions in their thermoregulation.

Exactly how sensitive a demon is to changes in temperature (and especially towards lower temperatures), and how high exactly they need to keep their body temperature, varies slightly between different types of demons and what part(s) of the Demon Realm they call home. Demons living strictly in the volcanic parts of the Demon Realm would have a higher need for heat and be more sensitive to a drop in temperature than demons who never set foot in those parts of the Demon Realm. By the same logic, demons who are adapted to and may visit more or all parts of the Demon Realm would be able to handle a wider range of temperatures.

What are the downsides? (cold environments)

Lastly, I wanna talk more about demons in cold environments. Like mentioned above, demons are more sensitive to lower temperatures and exposure to (particularly) cold environments may cause an overreaction in their thermoregulation. This happens because demons aren't used to handling these kinds of environments (due to the nature/climate of the Demon Realm) and their bodies don't fully know how to handle those temperature changes. When the demon's thermoregulatory center gets information of big drops in temperature, especially if those happen suddenly, you could say that it triggers a sort of panic - an oh shit, this might actually kill us kind of reaction. Of course, not every cold environment or (Britannian) winter causes an overreaction. But it tends to happen during sudden and/or prolonged exposure to cold temperatures, even more so the more intense/low those temperatures are.

The issue with environments that are colder than those in the Demon Realm is that the demons' thermoregulation doesn't always know quite when to stop. When there is a change in the temperature of the environment in the Demon Realm (regardless of if it's a raise or drop in temperature), the demon's thermoregulatory center knows which thermoregulatory mechanisms and how much of each is needed to counteract these changes in the temperature of the environment. Meaning, the ideal body temperature is maintained in the end, as it should. It might not be exactly the same body temperature in every environment (demons might be a bit warmer in cold environments and a bit colder in hot environments), but it stays within the acceptable range.

But in really cold environments (i.e. environments with lower temperatures than those in the Demon Realm), the demon's thermoregulatory center does not have the same basis or knowledge of what and how much is required to counter the change in temperature caused by the environment. Because of this an overreaction might occur; the ideal body temperature is not maintained. Instead the demon's body temperature is raised too much, beyond the acceptable range (because, again, the demon's thermoregulation doesn't know when to stop), and the demon risks overheating rather than freezing (as a human might risk in the same environment).

So, how do these overreactions present themselves in the demons, and how might the demon deal with them? Let's talk about a few things; starting with hyperactivity. Like mentioned before, demons have a tendency to become hyperactive with their body movements in cold environments (since muscle activity produces heat). Now how this hyperactivity might look varies. It can be anything from the smallest movements, like "vibrating" in place, to repeatedly rubbing their hands together, to bigger movements like continuously pacing around. These can also range from the demon being completely aware of them, choosing to do each movement, to these movements being done more or less unconsciously. For demons with less awareness of their movements they might even need someone else to help them realize they're doing them, and also, either by themselves or with help from others, be reminded to "calm down" or "stop moving".

Stopping an overreaction from happening or stopping one that is already happening, can be tricky. One way to do this is to lessen the thermoregulatory response happening, or at the very least the effect of it. This, of course, is a lot easier said than done, but one way to do it can be like mentioned above, that is trying to lessen the amount of movements the demon makes (less movements equals less heat production). Another way is to change the environment or the temperature of the environment. Striving to change the environment the demon is currently in is a basic need or goal for the demon. The overreaction happening is the demon's body telling them "this is dangerous, we need to get somewhere hotter". In other words, getting to a hotter environment or trying to make the current environment warmer is a way for the demon to stop the overreaction. A change to a hotter environment would change the information being sent to the thermoregulatory center and thus also the thermoregulation happening. A hotter environment would require a less drastic response, and might even fall within the kind of temperature change the demon's body is used to handling - in other words, the overreaction could be turned into a regular reaction.

The last thing I want to talk about today is the matter of clothes. The demon's clothes are a bit of a double-edged sword when it comes to cold environments. On one hand, removing clothes is a means for the demon to keep themself from overheating; because, as we all probably know, removing clothes makes us colder (wearing a layer of clothes reduces heat loss). But at the same time, removing clothes creates direct contact between the demon's skin and the temperature of the environment. Keeping a layer of clothing between the skin and the environment would lessen the input the thermoreceptors get, and thus also the information sent to the thermoregulatory center and the following thermoregulation response created. How a demon would tackle this clothing dilemma would vary between demons (and personalities) and also the situation at hand. One major factor of this could be whether or not an overreaction is happening. If keeping the clothes on would keep an overreaction from occurring then that might be the wisest decision for the demon. But if the demon could remove clothes without causing an overreaction then that could be their best course of action, since it would probably have the biggest effect on their current body temperature. In other words, there is no easy answer to whether or not removing their clothes would help or hurt their situation; it all depends.

yet he has never brought it up, and neither has mc (as of this current moment)

also xavier is known to have lower bodily vitals in comparison to an average person (ie: heart rate) and is also very good at detecting energy/metaflux fluctuations… surely EVER Group must’ve picked up on it from how long xavier has been around (hundreds of years, mind you)… using their advanced technologies on someone who is essentially a superhuman in their eyes

because there is much more to EVER group than what meets the eye, as we’ve learned in long-awaited revelry chapter 2 — they surely must know something deeper about the deepspace tunnel

which. speaking of the deepspace tunnel it’s the second time noted in-game of it happening… (first being chronorift catastrophe) (second being what happened with mc and sylus in n109 zone)… surely there are going to be devastating consequences right…? lol

It hits me today that, as a historical PruAus shipper, I actually went through quite a bit of viewpoint / headcanon revisions throughout the years. Before my memories fail me because I’m a boomer, I want to document that a bit, in rough chronological order....

Huh that’s an interesting ship, there seems to be quite some content beneath the surface of stupid quarreling

19th century imperial Austria such a vibe, Austria is sissy, weak, not physical, just lets people take advantage of him

Prussia totally tops Austria in Königgrätz, plomp, great angst dynamic (ok that’s before trigger warning was a thing). G major so good (can you believe that was published in 2010)

But seriously, why did they go to war in 1866? Did Austria initiate that? Did Prussia do that? Alright, let’s write a paper on that. Hold on, they seemed rather reluctant to go to war. It is like Zeitgeist pushed them to war. Austria was, from a contemporary point of view, rather formidable, so the defeat was more like a surprise. It is not right to depict Roderich as weak. But why does fandom do that? And more importantly, why do most of these history books frame Prussia as the strong one destined to lead? Also, Hungary was literally backstabbing Austria because they made a secret agreement with Prussia. Why did the canon depict the k.u.k relationship as a relatively happy marriage?

...Why does the canon and the fandom depict Prussia and Austria as always fighting? But they fought like - you can count with one hand - you have the Austrian succession wars, then Seven Years' War, then Bavarian succession (barely a fight but more like a joke), then Austro-Prussian war. They actually spend most of the time cooperating with each other? Meanwhile France - Austria you can count 10-15 direct conflicts depending on how you define it. But at least in my bubble I don’t see much France - Austria quarrel.

How did Prussia become a kingdom? Oh. Because the Habsburg emperor permitted it. Brandenburg stans would prefer to frame that as “courtesy call” but the Great Elector literally told the future descendants to respect the emperor ;). Hm, two thoughts: Austrian favoritism? How did politics actually work inside the empire?

At this point, canon for me is an inspiration for characters and their base personalities, but canon literalism is as bad as biblical literalism, chat can we agree? omg speaking of literalism, the times when Austria would be considered Jewish because of the name Edelstein, and all the HCs people developed based on it... >_>

The origins of Austria? Oh there is Bavaria and Saxony. Stem duchies. Wow. Very shippable, great dynamic. Bavaria has such a character. Let's RP as Bavaria. I wanna live there.

German states are underrated. Speaking of which, gotta develop country/state/nation lifecycle headcanons. Checked out NRW but god, that region, so messed up previously. Prussian administration in Catholic Rhineland, fascinating.

France fought Austria because of the Habsburgs? I want to go deeper. Treaty of Verdun, Oath of Strasbourg. Interesting. HRE and France are the same age? Fighting for Middle Francia for the next 1000 years? Now that's some founding myth we could go for.

Two important themes to resolve - love despite confessional divide, love despite Prussia waging war against Austria. Let’s go into the harder topics like sexuality and faith and how the personifications take it.

I want to write a historically informed saga for PruAus!!! Gotta do more research, specifically - how did they actually fall in love? And when?

Found more details on the 1730–1740s. Basically, the dynamic went like this: Austrian diplomacy was starting to take the help of Prussia as granted, see the Polish succession. Austrians were still kind to the Prussians, like the emperor himself intervened using imperial clauses so the king would not chop off Fritz’s head, but the resentment remained in the sense of looking down at Prussia. I think going with the angle of Prussia wanting to be treated as an equal would be the biggest personal reason he told himself that war against Austria was justified. It is like “notice me senpai” but really stupid and destructive. And I think that underdog or emotionally bottom dynamics really fit the dynamic in other times too.

I really want to avoid making anachronistic, predeterministic headcanons, as in, headcanons informed purely by present knowledge. Like “Styria wouldn’t be a personification because it isn’t a nation today,” but it surely was an entity in the present and could have had potential, and we just would never know. Same with the lower-upper state divides too. At this point it would be terribly inconsistent to have some personifications exist while some others don’t because canon didn’t create them. But in fics that can probably be briefly mentioned because it’s more like a huge distraction to the overall narrative.

Speaking of anachronistic headcanons, marriage headcanon is in my opinion a huge offender. As an Austria stan I gotta make sense of marriage. RPs and fanfics often handwave details. The main theme I see is “if there is some important political alliance marriage then the nations are married.” But then everyone would be sleeping with each other. If that is what people are going for, ok, but personally, with our Hetalia cast mostly male, some non-consensual underage stuff between two guys is the most immersion-breaking thing we could do. I love Roderich too much. I also believe the Habsburg house loves Roderich enough and Roderich loves himself enough that he and the other Austrian states did not do it. If you count just “political marriage,” then Austria and Hungary would have been doing it since medieval times.

Singling out Austro-Hungary and the Habsburg Catholic monarchy as the two marriages is full of inconsistencies. Not to mention, Spain-Austria was not an intentional alliance. There were successors lined up for Spain but they all just died LOL. Even the Spanish cortes had issues accepting Charles because the guy did not speak much Spanish. He grew up in Flanders. The 1500 to 1520s, to Roderich, would have been a rollercoaster in terms of pure luck. But I do think that if Roderich has had any sexual encounters, Antonio would be the first. Sexuality, guilt, sin, reformation, put that in a pot...

HRE being depicted as a weak kid, constant quotes from Voltaire, I’m so done with it. But the important question is, how did HRE truly decline in power? Sure, there’s the Thirty Years' War, but something else messed him up more, right? But no, there is no way Roderich would let anyone have a hand on HRE, there is just no way.

Then, why did Austria keep getting elected as the emperor after the 1440s? Czech and Luxembourgers? How? Let’s visit Prague and find out. Fascinating medieval background, I want to write her relationships with Roderich. I see them tighter together than Hungary, seriously, lol.

Saxony is incredibly beautiful and also an underserved character like Bohemia. I surprisingly liked Leipzig.

Went to all the medieval cities of Bavaria. What a historically and culturally consistent folk. Their national narrative is so laser-focused. Bavarians are the best, I want to be the emperor, otherwise I rebel, screw the centralized authority outside of Bavaria.

I finally understood the empire, I think.

Going to Italy. Let’s form Feliciano headcanons for real. His relationship with Austria is really dependent on the Italian city-states. What does Feli truly represent here? There are Risorgimento museums everywhere in Italy. I don’t think Feli is any of the northern states. He is like HRE but even worse off, with no authority of his own. I find it improbable that he would be Piedmont or Venice. At so many points in history, things could go sideways and some other state would take up the unification task. I am also increasingly convinced that the “memories with Rome grandpa” were a national myth. Feli believed and felt he remembered being around during Roman times, but upon scrutiny he would notice anachronistic, inconsistent details. He just chose to continue believing in it. This is my way of reconciling the North and South personification difference, with the North being the Germanic-conquered parts later turned Kingdom of Italy in name inside the HRE, while the South went a very different way starting with the Exarch of Ravenna.

Let’s finally give Hungary justice and read Hungary-specific history books instead of learning from side mentions in European books. To be honest I still do not fully understand it, in a sense of self-contradiction. Hungary getting ruined by Mongols and Turks, that is a theme. But the level of self-stabbing and the inconsistency between her people and her nobility were stark. It is like Hungary is happy with absolutely no one. John Zápolya surrendering himself to Ottoman authority just so he could get support kicking the Habsburgs out is like, wow, if Erzebet tells Roderich she finds Zápolya right, Roderich would just hate Erzebet so much lmfao. If Austria sides with the people, relieving them from misery and oppression from the nobles, the nobles go crazy. But then the nobles sided with Austria during the more reactionary times and the common folk was also unhappy about it. And it is not like Hungary was ever happy with their own chosen rulers either. If there is one common theme I am seeing, it is like “we could have been great, but insert reasons,” rather dysfunctional, poor but prideful folks. I think the inconsistency makes my version of Roderich understand Erzebet but never fully, like the predictable part is that she wants glory and recognition, but the means are inconsistent.

Wait, did I mention that all of this is about writing a PruAus fanfic? I haven’t even talked about HRE history and how that is relevant to rank setting for personifications, Prussia’s legality, elector legality, towns and cities and abbeys. Polish history and what that means to later interaction between Feliks and Roderich in marriages, Vienna sieges, partitions, and successions. The early days of the Teutonic Orders and how that characterizes Gilbert. I know, 700 words of rambling later and I finally mention Gilbert HCs? Austria has truly made me an AEIOU.

im assuming that there's not a lot of food sources available for taco so by this point she has gotten used to going about her day with very little emergy/feeling hungry, she would forget to eat a lot (or purposefully not eat to "conserve food" for others/for more difficult times) and mic has to remind her a lot

taco has probably gotten decently good at living in the woods and making do with stuff because assuming she has scavenged for food or whatever in that forest she could be growing her own food or actually hunting

she's probably semi-good at tech stuff, near test tube's level if not just as good (when she first acquires the invisibow it glitches out/breaks after a few tries but then later on it just never breaks once ? which leads me to assume she fixed it up/improved it somehow.) also the other 2 invisibows had to come from somewhere (the one knife broke and mic/mepad's bow)

i think i read a post of yours mentioning she has insomnia because of the forest but consider. she has insomnia because she has to stay alert so she doesn't get caught by the other contestants/anyone in general while she was living in the woods (if you already mentioned this before ignore it HAHA i am so forgetful)

TACO ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT EAT MUCH!!!! I've asked Justin about it, I've discussed (and your second hc for that matter!!) with my buddy @based-and-uncouth, I love this hc so so so much!!! Taco does NOT have easily access to good food sources in the woods!!! She has to conserve what little she does have, and combined with how harsh living in the wild is on one's body, and how small she is, she is unhealthily thin and generally unwell!! She would definitely keep those habits post-canon even when food is more plentiful!!! She just can't shake that fear so easily, yeah? Not to mention, after a period of starvation, a person has to up their portion sizes slowly so they don't make themselves sick!! Even if she wants to, she just can't start eating full portions right away!!! Mic would absolutely remind her to eat and help her out with getting her weight up <3.

And she absolutely has a range of survival skills after her years in the woods!!! Post-canon she would be pretty vital to building up their community, even if not everyone really trusts her, because she knows the most about the terrain, where to bathe, where to find food, and most importantly what food is and isn't safe to eat!!!! I'd imagine like, OJ or something trying to go out and make food on his own without consulting Taco, and then vomiting for a few hours because he used something unsafe in his dish. Lesson learned.

I LOVE HER BEING GOOD WITH TECH!!! Definitely not at a test tube level, it doesn't come as naturally to her, but she's a smart cookie (or a smart taco, I suppose) and could figure plenty out I'd bet!!! I believe she steals the other invisibow for Mic at the same time she steals her black one, and the other one we see in the beginning of episode 15 comes from a box of Testy/LB's things, so I think she just made another one after she "lost" the other two. But Taco does mess with Mepad's teleportation, and even if she doesn't manage to disable his own teleporting, she does enable herself to teleport, which I'd argue is more impressive. Techy Taco my beloved!!!

She would have a hoarding problem!!! Not sure if you meant items or food, but either way I'm with you. I made a post about her hoarding food a while back, so I'm just gonna talk about her hoarding stuff!!! Because Taco has pretty much nothing!!! The only possessions of hers that we see are ones she steals!!! Every resource she can get her hands on is important and must be kept!!! And she'd keep this mindset post-canon, even when she's hoarding pretty objectively useless stuff!!! Mic might help her out with this one too, helping Taco remember that she'll have all her needs met now and that she isn't in any danger <3.

Apologies if this was supposed to be three separate prompts because my mind is going down a 3 in 1 route.

Danny gets tired of protecting Amity. Really tired. Don't get him wrong, he loves protecting people. Obsession or not. It's just that he really misses having a normal life and figured taking a break for a while wouldn't be bad. Especially when his parents offered to take care of things during his little impromptu vacation. So Danny takes a little step back and his parents take over and all goes swimmingly.....until it doesn't.

You see it turns out a ghost's obsession is a little more serious than Danny has given it credit for. In fact, it doesn't take long at all for Danny's obsession with protection to rear its head. He keeps getting these twitches in his body and pangs in his chest. Both seeming to call him to action. To pick up the mantle of being a hero again. But Danny just chalks it up to missing his quip filled fights with his rogues and ignores these feelings. Until he wakes up one night with an unimaginable pain in his chest.

It feels like he's shattering into a million pieces. Like his chest is being forcibly ripped open. Like he's dying. All Danny can do is scream. He screams as a terrible fire-like feeling ignites in his chest and spreads through his body. He screams as his parents rush in and ask him what's wrong. He screams as he's loaded into the spectre speeder and taken to the Far Frozen. He screams until Frostbite injects him with something and the pain dies down to a numb throbbing.

As Danny calms, Frostbite asks him a question: "Have you been fulfilling your obsession recently?" At first, Danny says yes. After all, it's only been a week since he stopped protecting Amity Park. But Frostbite continues to prod until Danny tells the truth.

There's a grave look on Frostbite's face and he informs Danny how important one's obsession is. How it needs to be fulfilled constantly. One can only go about 3 days without fulfilling it. Then Frostbite gives the Fenton's even graver news. Danny's core is cracked.

Typically this is debilitating for a ghost but not the end of the world but Danny is a halfa and they have no way of knowing how it'll affect him. It may be fine. But it might also kill him. Given his vitals in the last hour, Frostbite is leaning towards the latter.

Luckily there is an experimental procedure that's been developed to heal cracked cores but the process has a decent chance at killing off Danny's human side. So Danny is left with two choices: Become a full ghost, or risk having a final death.

Danny's not sure he wants to do that though. To become a full ghost would mean severing his last ties to humanity. He'd have to live in the ghost zone full time to get enough ectoplasm. He'd no longer be able to go to school, get a job, or start a family. He didn't want to do the procedure, but he was dying, so he's parents signed off for him.

The procedure works and Danny is now a full ghost with a now whole again, albeit slightly damaged core. But nothing is the same. He watches the whole move on without him as he continues to fervently protect the innocent. He sees his parents grow old in the blink of an eye and his friends are moving on to better things in a snap. The world continues turning and people come and go but Danny cannot. For he is the constant protector.

Renfield anniversary week, prompt 5: favourite ship. Sorry, but these two have my heart.

I'm fascinated with the idea of these two. They're fucked up in opposite directions, but are initially drawn to each other for the same reasons. They each see strength in the other that they envy.

Rebecca's strength of will, her ability to stand firm and sass a guy with a gun to her head- that's something Robert admires deeply; so too, in this scene, does she admire his willingness to put his life on the line without personal stakes like hers.

I really do think he's among the first few people she feels comfortable trusting, after her dad. She speaks to him with a vulnerability we don't see with 90% of the other characters. I couldn't really get the without you that starts off this line, because of how the sub track is set up, but it's pretty emblematic of this to me.

Rebecca lives a life where having rock-solid walls up is vital. Any vulnerability she shows is an opportunity for the corruption she's fighting against to chew her up and spit her out, and that's another reason why her and Robert work well together- they respect each other, in a way that neither gets anywhere else in their lives. They can see each other. And they like what they see.

Robert listens to her, in a way that quite literally nobody else in the film does, not even Kate- compare and contrast his response to her venting vs Kate's when Teddy Lobo is let go again.

The value of just having someone look you in the eye and say, for the first time, that must be awful. I don't think Rebecca has, herself, that freedom of emotion or ability to express affection- the same walls that protect her from the outside world are up inside her head.

It's why I like to HC them as falls first (Robert), falls harder (Rebecca), and part of why I think they work SO MUCH BETTER for not being canon on the final draft- by the end of the runtime, neither is quite ready to be normal about letting someone get close- but I feel like they will be soon. And when they are, they'll be perfect for each other.

P.S: It's also important to me that Robert can talk back to her- she isn't entirely unlike his last partner, imo, he has something of a type (dominance)- but he's able to snark back at her. He's not scared of her.

✿ — okay, okay, haha! i know that this analysis is probably one of the most anticipated of the ep's songs, so i hope that i've done this analysis justice! :'D i'm also just gonna take a super quick moment to tag @excelsior9173, @laceandeights, and @pyrographic-memory!! i hope you all don't mind! :')) this is just because you all were so incredibly sweet with interacting with my original post, i figured i'd take a chance and tag you! :D there was also a super sweet anon who also asked for a nazareth analysis, but they asked on anon so i just hope that they see this, haha! :)

anyways!! this post is gonna be another massive theory//headcannon post that will be focusing on the sleep token ep, two, and the second song, nazareth, as well as my hc that these songs are quite literally the basis for ii's backstory! :D i'm super proud with how this analysis turned out, and jericho is gonna be next up on that list! >:Dc followed by jaws and maybe even granite to tie it all up! :))

✿ — TWO + CALCUTTA.

↳ this is just a quick little summary of what we've analyzed so far!

this hc stems from the fact that every song from this ep are the only songs on spotify to list a 'vessel ii' as a composer alongside 'vessel'. and, of course, the ep is named 'two'! :D haha!

finally, i like to interpret calcutta as a song about hopelessness and about experiencing a growing sense of despair that can only come from loving another person that you cannot obtain. while sleep and their influences might be vessel's own personal prison—vessel is ii's calcutta; he is ii's prison that ii willingly crawls back into every night, just to have a moment where it is just the two of them. and i think that it is in this moment in time where sleep extends their influence to ii, intending to weaponize ii's jealousy and possessive thoughts to bring vessel closer to sleep. and this is where we've left off to prepare for our analysis of nazareth! :)

✿ — NAZARETH.

↳ tw + cw : discussions of death, jealousy, possessive thoughts, guns, domestic assault + murder. this one is a doozy!! please take care of yourself if you choose to continue.

✿ — before we deep dive into those lyrics, let's talk about what nazareth means! :)

✧ — as a name, 'nazareth' might mean 'a watch tower', but it's also been connected in the new testament with the word 'netzer' meaning 'a branch' or 'a shoot'. however! this doesn't mean 'shoot' as in with a gun, but 'a shoot' as in 'a growth that occurs from newly chopped down trees'. but!! this still has a chance to relate heavily to how sleep views their blessing specifically in vessel, mainly with how it is the consequences of the actions depicted in this song that leave a shoot of despair and resentment growing in both vessel and ii.

✧ — additionally, nazareth holds significant meaning in the new testament of christianity! nazareth is actually the childhood home of jesus, and it is in a synagogue of nazareth where jesus preached a sermon that eventually led to him being chased out of his boyhood home.

↳ but! why was jesus chased out of nazareth if that was his childhood home? well, when the people of nazareth demanded that jesus perform a miracle, jesus refused to do so because the people of nazareth did not have faith in him. the people of nazareth where so upset with jesus, that they wanted to throw him off a cliffside. now, this!! this is perhaps the most vital connection we have from the title of the song to its meaning! because, the reference of jesus' rejection by the people of nazareth could be interpreted as a very clear and intentional mirror of sleep's relationship with vessel.

✿ —alrighty!! these are pretty much the most important points i can make before we officially dive into the lyrics! the relationship between jesus and the people of nazareth is something that is absolutely imperative to keep in the back of your mind while we continue with the lyrics! >:Dc

✧ — as always, this is all a byproduct of my own personal opinions and headcannons, but i like to think that nazareth is a song about the drastic measures that sleep would go through in order to keep vessel tethered to them, using ii's pre-existing jealousy against vessel's current partner (as discussed in the calcutta analysis) as a weapon. i know i said that i wouldn't go through every single lyric in the previous analysis, i realize i kind of did anyways, haha! regardless, here is my interpretation of nazareth's lyrics. :)

✧ — super quick!! while calcutta, and later also jericho, are told from the perspective of ii, i think that nazareth is specifically from sleep's pov, talking directly to ii!! please keep this in mind while we continue! :D

' and i'll see you when the wrath comes // knocking on your bedroom door with money // building you a kingdom '

↳ this is sleep's promise to ii. throughout the entire course of the song, this is what sleep promises to ii. but what does this mean? i think this is sleep telling ii that they will be there when ii's anger and jealousy inevitably takes over—there will be a point in ii's life where this wrath will metaphorically knock on the door of ii's consciousness with money, with a deal that is too good to pass up. ii has alienated himself so much from vessel and his partner that it is with his jealousy and with his anger that he is building his own kingdom, he is growing too comfortable with all of these awful, awful feelings that are only further amplified by sleep's manipulation; ii is the king of his own misery, and sleep is there with him every step of the way.

' drippin' from the open mouth // i'll show you what you look like from the inside // and i'll see you when the wrath comes around '

↳ i think that these lines really start to illustrate for the audience just how much of a master manipulator sleep is as they continue to actively antagonize ii in regards to his immense jealousy of vessel's partner. using graphic imagery — perhaps even projecting the image of vessel's partner dying and bleeding out and dripping blood from their open mouth, already illustrating what they want ii to do — sleep continues to acknowledge ii's negative emotions, further reminding ii that his wrath will make itself known and sleep will be there when that happens.

' tonight, tonight, tonight // you have the answer '

↳ whereas sleep's previous words feel like a promise, these ones feel more like a taunt. a scathing reminder — a borderline prophecy — that sleep knows ii's fate. they're taunting him with this, though still trying to provoke ii.

' let's load the gun // make her eat the tape in the bathroom mirror // see if she can guess what // a hollow point does to a naked body // let's fuck her up '

↳ previously, sleep has been daydreaming about the violence that they want ii to unleash on vessel's partner, but here?? i think ii's sanity has finally snapped, and he currently has vessel's partner tied up and scared for their life as these lyrics are being sung. i think that the previous lyrics were nothing more than sleep's violent daydreams, but this verse is sleep describing all the things they want ii to do while vessel's partner is in the room with them.

↳ these lyrics are graphic, and it's deliberate. sleep wants vessel's partner to be afraid, they're toying with her life right in front of her eyes—sleep doesn't just want vessel's partner gone, they want her to suffer.

✧ — as a super quick interlude, i would just like to address sleep's motives before we continue with the rest of the analysis!!

in our calcutta analysis, we did briefly discuss why ii might be envious of vessel's partner—the reason being that ii might be envious of vessel's attentions being so divided between himself and vessel's partner, with ii feeling as though vessel doesn't care about ii when he's able to be with his partner, only defaulting to ii's company during the nighttime, when she is not available to be around vessel. which, to be fair, is honestly a totally valid human emotion! ii doesn't think of harming vessel's partner until sleep begins influencing him and taunting him. in calcutta, there isn't really any graphic displays of ii wishing any harm, let alone violence on vessel's partner—there is an instance where ii was rude to vessel's partner by completely dismissing her importance in vessel's life, but these wishes for violence don't make themselves terribly known until sleep starts taunting ii. but why would sleep be jealous alongside ii? well, i think that while ii has a very natural + human experience with his envy, sleep's jealousy is completely irrational and inhuman; it's completely possessive of vessel. sleep isn't used to vessel, or ii for that matter, interacting with anyone outside of sleep's influence. i think that sleep, as a deity, is used to being the center of attention—quite literally the center of worship. to them, vessel's partner feels like a threat, a distraction to vessel's worship. sleep doesn't simply want to occupy vessel's mind during the night, they want to occupy his mind and his attention at all given times. i think that knowing how ii shares those sentiments — albeit to a much more human and less completely dangerous degree; 'i'm whole again // for just a moment // 'till the morning comes' — sleep is able to poison ii's judgment and weaponize their shared jealousy to take vessel's partner out of the picture. i think the meaning behind the title of the song is that little hint that we need to properly understand sleep's motives! just like jesus when he refused to give the people of nazareth a miracle because they did not have faith, sleep is acting in a very similar way, albeit much more twisted. instead of simply rejecting vessel, sleep is rejecting his partner, the supposed source of vessel's sudden lack of faith. okay! back to the analysis >:Dc

' manifest pain at the core of pleasure // i'll see you when the wrath comes around '

↳ i think this line is meant to be split up between being addressed to vessel's partner and being addressed to ii. sleep has been an open antagonist throughout the entirety of this song; they want vessel's partner — and by extension, the audience — to absolutely suffer. sleep wants vessel's partner to think of vessel as she passes, sleep wants her to think of all the good times she's experienced with him + all the wonderful moments of her life she's spent with her loved one, and sleep wants her to die thinking of him; they want her to feel immense pain where there was once pleasure.

✿ — BIG, BIG TW FOR A DESCRIPTION OF BODY HORROR + GENITAL HORROR!! i totally understand if that's not your cup of tea!! please skip this next indented section!!!

↳ in a much more... gruesome approach, i think that this line might also be able to be taken quite literally—this is how ii kills vessel's partner. ii either shoots her in the heart, or... he might have also shot her in her lower abdomen, specifically targeting her reproductive system. sleep is so desperate to cause vessel's partner immense pain in the moments leading to her death that they are willing to have ii do anything to desecrate her humanity + any semblance of love she might've held for vessel—sleep wants vessel's partner to die with a twisted memory of vessel's love. regardless, because of this sentiment, i think this line specifically is a jab at vessel's emotions. of course, i always wanna insert my trans! ii headcannon into literally anything i write regarding this man, haha! so there's also a possible symbolic disconnect there if you really wanna think some sad thoughts :'D

↳ of course, we end with sleep's taunt towards ii, a reminder of what his rage + jealousy has forced him to do.

↳ this reoccurrence of this line had me going through the lyrics of all of the ep's songs quite a few times, because i never really remembered there being an actual question that might've been phrased or even referenced throughout the course of the ep. then, of course, i realized i'm writing a story for sleep token and quickly backtracked, haha! :'D i think this supposed 'question' is more-so implied in the aspects of ii's character that we see throughout the ep. i think that, deep down, this is another manipulation tactic used by sleep.

↳ vessel's partner is important to vessel, but obviously not to sleep. i like to think that ii was much more hesitant to accept sleep's blessings and their influence than vessel was, but his actions tonight have made it 'clear' that ii will do what he is told, even if that means harming vessel in the process. his allegiances are ultimately with sleep, not with vessel.

↳ (not really, haha! like i said, i think that this is another manipulation tactic used by sleep against ii. i think that, at this point, sleep is still obsessed with vessel and only vessel. ii is... interesting to them, but more-so in a useful sense than a 'hey, i actually kinda like this funky little fellow' kind of way, haha! sleep loves vessel, like, in a toxic, yandere kind of way. they want ii to feel guilty about what he's been coerced to do; they want ii to forcibly alienate himself even more from vessel, because ii loves vessel as well! and sleep unfortunately does know this.)

' let's load the gun // (they won't be missing you, they won't be missing you) // let's load the gun // (see you when the wrath comes, see you when the wrath comes) // let's load the gun // (see you when the wrath comes) '

↳ this is all sleep; ordering ii to load the gun, mocking vessel's partner over never being missed, and once again taunting ii over how easily his jealousy has gotten the better of him. this is where it all happens, and this is where it all ends.

↳ something i noticed while listening to this song on repeat, haha! now, i'm not experienced with music in any way, shape, or form, but to my uneducated ear, it sounds like there are two separate breakdowns towards the final minutes of the song—one following immediately after when vessel finishes singing, and another following a small piano-based transition that ends the song. i think that these two breakdowns symbolize our timelines!

↳ the first breakdown is when ii finally gives into sleep's demands and shoots vessel's partner until she's dead in the bathroom. the second breakdown is when ii completely loses it over what he's done.

✿ — to put it all together!! i don't think that ii can be entirely blamed for the murder of vessel's partner. with this story + interpretation, ii was entirely coerced, borderline possessed and overpowered by sleep's own possessive thoughts toward vessel, and inevitably manipulated into doing an extreme action when he wasn't in his right mind. (am i condoning this sort of reason in real life?? hell no!! but, as a very gentle reminder, this is fantasy! and like to think that i'm allowed to have my brain read too deep between the lines of a sleep token ep and come back to this silly little blog to report my findings and my daydreams, haha!) but ii's jealousy and wrath have made themselves known, and sleep was especially quick to monopolize on that—weaponizing ii's own emotions in a way that would directly benefit sleep through the murder of vessel's partner. this song is a warning; it is a threat and it's especially graphic and unsettling because sleep wants that reminder to forever haunt not only vessel, but ii as well, for the rest of their lives and their servitude to sleep. ii was the one holding the gun, but it was inevitably sleep that forced him to pull the trigger.

✿ — and that's it!! :D this concludes my analysis + narrative interpretation of the song nazareth from the ep, two! :)) once again, as a friendly reminder, this is just my own interpretation of the lyrics through a strictly narrative lense :) i don't think this could be actual sleep token canon, haha! i just think that this would make a very fun and interesting story for my own selfish reasons, haha! next up on the list is jericho, and then i'll for sure be making an analysis for jaws to tie everything all up! :) please feel free to let me know what you think of this analysis! :D this one was definitively a challenge to get through, but i've no doubt that jericho is going to be even harder in terms of angsty emotions as that one focuses more on ii's consequences and how they impact his relationship with vessel. :'D ahhhh, i'm not readyyyy, haha!

* We saw them fighting together, every second of every moment. They have been loyal not only to each other, but also to Todoroki for a long time.

* Tsuji is more serious and calm, while Shibaman is more cheerful, more sarcastic and more extroverted.

* He who never runs away from a fight, even if he thinks he will lose, he wants to fight like a real man.

* I think they both mature and get stronger over time. He is especially happy that the fights have ended with the unification of the factions.

* He usually talks to Tsuji about his problems. He is afraid of being a burden to you. But when he sees you worrying about him, he's trying not to upset you and talk to you too

* He's not afraid to cry next to you. But I don't think he's someone who cries easily.

* He never wants to worry you. So when he finds out you got into a fight, he silently watches you clean your wounds like a guilty child.

I have a question about the earlier chapters of LITD, it's been eating at my brain a bit thinking about it.

Basically i've been wondering if Grian would have died without intervention after the weakness potions? All the HC crew made it sound like Grian was dying like on deaths door, and everyone had to work to make sure he didn't in fact die because of the potions. So did Grian underestimate how weak he was and three potion's really might have been enough to kill him? Or did it just look like he was dying from the HC crew's perspective?

(ps also i'm obsessed with the LITD playlist and i'm listening to it nonstop and therorizing what might happen based on the song choices and also you have a banger taste in music aaaaaa)

This is such an excellent question!!! So Grian wasnt actively dying from the weakness potions-- my thoughts on potions and Watchers is that they just kinda interact a bit weirdly with Watcher biology, because they're created with Player utility code in mind and those are two separate codes inside two separate entities. Kinda like if you tried to give an alien aspirin; it might not be very effective, it might just plain kill them, it all sorta depends on how they would metabolize it and a million other factors.

The important point is that Grian took three weakness, which could absolutely kill a Player (and was indeed dangerous for him to take in his weakened state), and since the hermits at this point knew basically nothing about Watchers and Watcher biology, they treated the situation the way they would if another Player took the same amount. That combined with how physically frail and emaciated he looks, it really appeared that he was actively dying from the potions, and they didnt have the information necessary to understand that wasnt the case.

In many ways they still dont know a lot about Grian's situation, so they're coming at his care from the perspective of another Player. Its why Tango is so willing to believe him when he says he'll need five health potions to somewhat recover-- none of them know whether or not thats a lie, bc they know next to nothing about Watchers and how they work yet!!
