There is something so special to me about the unlikely friendship between Borderline + Bipolar James and Bipolar Barty.
*light TW for BPD and Bipolar episode descriptions and injuries, illusion to suicidal ideation during a depressive episode*
They start out basically hating each other, but they both make a point to be passably civil to each other because both of them are important people to Regulus, and neither of them are willing to hurt Reg by being awful to each other. It’s an incredibly slow process, but eventually they get sort of close to each other via forced proximity. Little things start slipping out as they talk, sometimes they hang out at parties if they’ve had enough to drink to tolerate the other’s presence, and eventually they come to something of a peaceful truce.
Then Barty has a euphoric-manic episode and gets really hurt. Like, really, really hurt. Evan and Regulus are at a complete loss, and it takes James longer than he’d like to admit to put the pieces together.
When Barty is finally released, he’s spiralling really badly, but he was raised in a way that makes telling someone he needs help impossible. So James steps up. He tells him what’s happening to him, what the episodes are, how to navigate them as best as possible, offers Barty support he’s never had before and lets him know that he’s there for him, that James understands what’s happening to him. That he cares.
It’s not Barty who reaches out first, though. It’s James. It’s been months since Barty’s manic episode when James has a depressive one. Through the fog and the weight across his entire body, he somehow musters the strength to call the one person in his life that he may not like, but who knows.
It’s awkward at first. Barty and James don’t like each other, but they know each other on a level their other friends can’t. So despite Barty wanting to do literally anything else, he stays. He tries. He learns.
Barty stays glued to James for three days until a bit of the fog recedes and he can lift his head on his own again. It takes another week or so for James to really start functioning again, and another two afterwards until he’s back to baseline. Barty doesn’t tell anyone, but he pays a student in James’ year on the low to get his class notes and homework assignments, and he does every single one of them so James doesn’t need to worry about trying to catch up on almost a month of missed work. He’s not really sure what exactly compelled him to do it, but he feels like it was the right thing to do.
James does the same thing for Barty during his first major depressive episode.
They make a pact of sorts, every morning when the potions vials show up by their breakfast plates, they make eye contact across the Great Hall, lift their potions up, tap the bottoms on the table, and shoot it back like a party shot. It’s a routine that helps them ground each other. It’s something that makes them feel anchored and in the moment. If they can laugh at each other’s faces from the vile tasting potions, they can face whatever the day might bring.
When they’ve all graduated, Evan and Barty find a place not far from Regulus and James’. It’s not an uncommon occurrence for Evan or Regulus to find James and Barty curled up together on Bad Days, or to find them laughing somewhat maniacally as they beat the piss out of each other wrestling and sparring on days that are Too Much.
It takes a long time before Barty really understands that James is there for him. Two years after his diagnosis is when he has his worst episode yet. It comes on with very little warning and Barty knows it’s bad and knows he needs help but he can’t physically get himself to call for it. All he knows is one minute he was in bed with Evan sleeping next to him and the next he’s on a seaside cliff face and he’s terrified of what his brain is doing to him. He doesn’t remember actually calling for James, but he does remember being wrapped in familiar arms and having a jumper shoved on him. He remembers being on the Potter-Black sofa and remembers James holding a tea cup to his lips because his hands were shaking so violently he couldn’t hold it on his own. He remembers James talking, but he couldn’t understand the words.
He remembers the moment that he finally understood that someone had come for him when he needed them, and they hadn’t left him alone.
He remembers the way that when it finally clicked into place, when he realised that he truly had a Person, that it got just a little bit easier to keep breathing.
If you had told James Potter and Barty Crouch Jr that they would become not only friends, but something deeper than that, back in school, they both would have laughed themselves silly. But now? They are each others Person and that’s a bond that the world ending couldn’t even break.

LILY EVANS BIRTHDAY MY BEST GIRL <3
here’s some of my favourite headcanons in honour of my favourite aquarius !!
short, like 5’3, extremely long, flowing, auburn hair, lots of freckles, plus-size, was insecure of her looks and body until she met the girls and they helped her realise her beauty
70s flower power girl at heart: flared or bell bottom jeans, flowy tops with sleeves that widen and low necklines, a LOT of necklaces, not afraid to mismatch gold and silver (both enhance her eyes and hair), mary-janes her go to shoe
forced all the girls to listen to ABBA, fully converted Mary and Alice, and although marlene pretends, she knows she loves the too. she’s still working on dorcas and emmeline…
dated mary from 3rd to 5th year. they both realised they were bi at the same time and their young hearts thought that meant they were meant to be. still remained best friends after the mutual breakup
after severus started bullying Mary, she dropped him instantly (idc that that’s not canon)
best at charms in the year (as well as a few other subjects that sirius didn’t take) but was lauded for her charm work
thought james only said he liked her as a joke, but after he toned his confessions down and started being genuinely kind to her when no one else was around she began to see that might not be the truth
was conflicted in her feelings for james at first, trying desperately to find reasons to not like him, until eventually marlene sat her down and gave her tough love about how she deserves to be happy
has bipolar disorder (diagnosed at 14) but is very on top of her medication and is not ashamed
however she is worried about how being in a relationship with james will impact her and whether he will accept that part of her, especially in times when she is not doing well
but of course he did, it’s james potter, and whether manic or depressive he was unfailingly there
she trained as a healer (doctor in muggle au), before specialising in psychiatric medicine and therapy
remus is her best friend, and they spend as much time as possible together. he is her safe haven. he just understands her like no one else, and she him. he also has the best weed
i’m a lily evans stoner truther
bakes when stressed, her specialty is anything apple based
her favourite shows were ever after high and my little pony (modern au) when she was younger and still watches them when she needs comfort
bonded with sirius over sibling trauma, she thought he was an arrogant prat at first but quickly formed an unbreakable bond with him. he was her brother.
loved her parents and knew they loved her, but she felt stifled in that house and hated the way they pandered to petunia. going to hogwarts probably saved her life
she has a massive crush on sophie thatcher and the girls found it hilarious because of how much she looks like marlene
knew everyone’s secrets (probably before they knew them themselves) and despite being a massive gossip, she never shared anything about anyone that was not public knowledge
when angry everyone knew to steer clear, except remus, he would calm her down just by walking into a room, and would then take her for a walk to vent to him before smoking a joint together
after the war ended and they all SURVIVED, she and james adopted two more children and raised them with the children of remus and sirius, and mary and emmeline, with marlene and dorcas being the super cool fun aunts
i love her i love her i love her

due to popular demand (no one asked, i just wanted to do this) here’s a marauders’ character study based on mitski songs. keep in mind that most mitski songs have some romantic meaning, but as an aro i don’t usually see things that way, so i won’t be using that interpretation.
as a former sirius kinnie i had to start with my starboy.
so here’s “Sirius “Why didn’t you stop me” Black”
why didn’t you stop me is special because every lyric hits insanely hard, but the thing that makes me associate it with sirius is the immensely grief the song displays
something bad has happened, something that the protagonist of the song initiated, and in consequence they’ve ended the relationship with a close one. the protagonist is heartbroken, because even if they ended it, they thought the other part would go after them.
a common mistake i see when people talk about sirius is not acknowledging his family. it’s often a big topic until he runs away and then it’s all good? now, this is my own interpretation, but having an abusive family can fuck you up in tons of ways, and i personally headcanon sirius having a twisted sense of love
look, he loves (loved) regulus, he’s his little brother and he cares (cared) about him, and that’s the only kind of true love he’s ever know. but his parents? walburga and orion fight CONSTANTLY. they’re always fighting about every little thing, and the only time sirius sees them together they’re arguing. that leads to a distorted sense of romantic love in which he thinks love is constant arguments.
of course he goes to hogwarts and learns he isn’t in a normal family, and so he learns about other kinds of love: he learns about friendship, and james potter teaches him about stable relationships, but that ain’t enough. y’all can choose if you want to believe he ever dated marlene in their straight era, (as someone who headcannons sirius as a demi person, i choose not to) but if he did, it would be an unstable relationship in which he’s constantly seeking conflict, so it ends because marlene is both a lesbian and over that shit.
then remus happens, and this time sirius falls hard. he’s head over heels for moony, so he shows it the only way he’s ever known and they’re always fighting, not in good ways tho. it’s not necessary that sirius actually puts a stop to their relationship in order to relate him to the song, but the feeling is there, sirius is always creating conflict and waiting for remus to chase him.
sirius has been neglected his whole life by his parents, so he thrives on the attention, he needs the chase in order to feel loved because that’s all he knows.
then the prank happens
as i personally headcanon sirius with a bipolar disorder, and the prank as a result of a manic episode, and after he comes back for it, it happens “why won’t you chase after me”. of course he understands why he doesn’t want to be near him, but at the same time he knows that if he was in remus’ position he would go after him. so why won’t he? maybe he never loved him after all?
of course, this is just a representation of sirius’ fucked up concept of love, which of course changes when he and remus finally end together so Sirius has to learn about healthy romantic relationships.
or, well, this is be the cowboy, there’s always more angst

The Grim Sanitarium (Scorbus)
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/uLMUmsa
by DBR_Augary
It all started off with a party in the Shrieking Shack, six kids lost in the Forbidden Forest, and copious amounts of alcohol in everyone’s systems. It ended with a kid on deaths doorstep in the Slytherin boys bathroom. No one really knows what happened that night, just that someone had done something horrible enough to make someone attempt suicide. But then rumours spiralled out of control and soon Scorpius Malfoy was known as the mutant kid that had been jinxed a few times and wanted attention. People assumed he was expelled, it was easier that way. Kept Hogwarts out of the papers. But Albus Potter had seen what condition the kid was in, this was no accident, and no cry for attention.
Luckily, this story has a happy ending. A happy ending that begins in the Grim Sanitarium.

I just really think Remus Lupin is a ballerina okay AU
Remus Lupin has been doing ballet since he was four. He was exuberant and flashy at first, but after his first teacher, Greyback, molested and abused him, he is quiet and reserved. He prefers to dance by himself and does not speak to anyone inside or outside of the class. He wears pink material and is the best dancer in the school, but everyone is more terrified of him than they are jealous. He has sad eyes and soft hair, but prominent scars (both self-inflicted and from Greyback and accidents) cover his freckled skin. He’s a mystery, but no one wants to solve him.
He lives with his roommate and only friend, Severus Snape, who is a writer. He spins out films and novels and poems by the hundreds, especially inspired by the rain. Remus and Severus will often spend rainy days together in their apartment, with Severus typing furiously and scribbling while Remus dances to Hozier and Lana Del Rey off to the side. Sometimes when Remus will have nightmares, Severus will hold him and sing Russian lullabies until he falls asleep. Severus smokes lazily and wears subdued flower and gothic dresses that show off his jutting hips and collar bones. Having escaped an abusive father and a dead mother, he and Remus bond over their shit parents, with Remus’ father being neglectful and his mother kind but catatonic. Their neighbors think they’re witches, but they’re alright with that.
They both have to work to pay the bills, so while Severus works with preschoolers, Remus works as an assistant for a terrifying professor named Grindelwald at the university. He’s a reformed felon who’s always glowering, and there are rumors he’s Dumbledore’s husband, who is Remus’ mysterious ballet teacher with the twinkling eyes. But no one has the guts to ask him - it’s unknown what he was locked up for, and nobody wants to risk that it was irrational homicide. He mostly ignores Remus though, and doesn’t mind if Remus reads or dances while he works, so Remus doesn’t think he’s too bad.
One day Remus is grading some papers for Grindelwald when Lily Evans walks in, a vision in a white floral lace flowing vest and an across-the-shoulders dark blue dress, a brown belt around her waist and matching ankle boots coming up over creme knee-high knit socks, a black hat on her head. There’s a camera around her neck and her smile is beautiful, surrounded by her freckles, and she and Remus hit it off immediately. She asks if he can spare some time to be her model for the day, and he agrees. They’re hanging out in the park and laughing when Severus walks over, having finished work. The moment he and Lily lay eyes on each other, something happens, something magical, and Remus can see it in both of their smiles as they exchange shy hellos.
Lily starts to hang around them, her and Severus teetering on the edge of something. Remus nudges Severus until he’s brave enough to ask her out, and their first date is in the park where they met, sitting on a bench in the rain and watching the birds. Remus is pretty sure they’re gonna get married one day.
To keep himself busy while his two friends fall in love, Remus escapes to the dance school, dancing alone to Lana Del Rey in an empty room when the door creaks open and he hears, “Wow.” He turns around and smiles, taking in the sight of James Potter, an old school friend who left for Julliard and he hasn’t seen in years. James laughs, pulling him into a hug, and Remus lets him, tangling his hands in James’ curls and grinning when James presses a kiss to the corner of his mouth. James tells him he’s been enjoying a gap year before going to search for a job as a back-up dancer for Taylor Swift, to which Remus giggles and tells him he’ll be great. James beams, and pulls Remus along, saying he has to meet James’ best friend-partner-person. Remus agrees, and changes back into his flowing white dress decorated in bees and black flats, tucking spruce leaves in his hair before taking James’ hand and following him out.
At James’ apartment, he calls out, “Babe! I’m home!” Remus watches as Sirius Black comes skidding down the hall, dazzling in a sparkling black croptop with gold touches and a raggedy sheer maroon skirt that falls just above his spiky combat boots. With white and gold dahlias in his hair, he’s the most beautiful thing Remus has ever seen, and he stares as James pecks Sirius on the mouth, coming away with dark red lipstick stains. When Sirius looks up at Remus, his eyes twinkling, and Remus reaches out a hesitant hand, which Sirius takes. “Hi,” he breathes, and Sirius laughs, loud and bright. He leans in and kisses Remus’ cheek. “Hello, beautiful,” he says sweetly, wrapping an arm around Remus’ waist. “James has told me all about you, love.” Remus blushes, unable to stop smiling even as Sirius pulls away at James’ indignant “Oi!” and doesn’t touch him again. Sirius is the love of his life - he doesn’t know how, but it’s something he just somehow knows, the feeling taking root in his chest and sprouting flowers.
Sirius, as it turns out, is James’ roommate and queerplatonic partner. He ran away from his abusive home and is taking commissions as an artist. Mostly he draws wolves, dogs, rats, deers, doves, snakes, and cats. He affectionately calls Remus Moony, insisting his scars look like something were bit him and his eyes are the fierce amber of a wolf’s. Sirius in turn is called Padfoot, for his doglike energy and loving nature, while James is dubbed Prongs for being a dumbass who continually forgets he’s too big to fit in small spaces and gets lost in the woods almost every weekend. Remus never wants to stop hanging out with them, and learns to spend hours shopping at the vintage shop where Sirius works, the two of them falling for each other fast while James reclaims them as his partners in love as in life. And Remus is so, so happy.
While he’s busy falling in love with Sirius, Lily has moved in with him and Severus. Remus doesn’t mind, and tells Severus he’s thinking of making a home with Sirius and James. Severus hugs him and tells him he’s proud of him, suggesting they hang out that day just the two of them, like old times. Remus agrees, and lets Severus take him to the cafe where Lily works. In the corner of the shop is Regulus Black, a boy drenched in hoodies and coats that Remus and Severus buy free food and drinks for. Regulus thanks them profusely, and they all make small talk until Remus makes a comment that Regulus looks like Remus’ boyfriend Sirius, to which Regulus starts crying, explaining that Sirius is his older brother and he’s been trying to find him for years but gave up looking when their shit parents died and Sirius was nowhere to be found at the funeral. Remus offers to take him home, and Severus kisses Remus on the forehead before heading off to find Lily.
On the way there, they stop at the bakery and accept some free cupcakes from Peter Pettigrew, who owns the bakery with his elusive partner. Regulus, as it turns out, is homeless, and has been trying to make it on his busking money alone. But while he’s fairly lovely at singing, it’s not enough to buy anything concrete. As they eat, Regulus also tells Remus about Amir Levis, a librarian who lets him stay at the library. Remus exclaims that he already knows Amir, who helps Remus remember his pills and doctor’s appointments and always has a spare wheelchair and some tea for him just in case. Regulus admits to having a crush on Amir, but he’s too scared to do anything about it. Remus assures him he and Sirius will help him with it, and just like that they’re on their way.
At home, Remus smiles softly at the sight of Sirius and James entwined on the couch and says, “Look who I found.” At the sight of Regulus, Sirius shoves James to the floor in his haste to stand up, taking Regulus’ face in his hands and searching his eyes for answers. “You got out?” He says, breathless. “Really? You’re alright?” Regulus smiles sheepishly. “Of course I did, Siri,” he whispers. “You think I was gonna let you have all the fun?” Sirius tears up and tugs him close, rocking back and forth as the two of them mumble apologies and love confessions into each other’s necks and shoulders and hair. Remus gravitates towards James, kissing him with a smile before pulling him out of the apartment, saying they should leave the brothers alone.
Remus takes the opportunity to introduce James to Severus and Lily, who are immediately taken with him. They offer to watch him for the afternoon while Remus goes to therapy with Maxwell Needles, a counselor with magenta hair who talks to Remus about life, his accident, his trauma, Greyback, his suicidal tendencies, anxiety, PTSD, and depression. Remus also takes the chance to pick up Sirius and James’ ADHD medication, Peter’s OCD prescription, Lily’s bipolar medication, Severus’ schizophrenia suppressors, and a few books on autism (for Severus), Tourette’s (for Lily), and eating disorders (for James and, Remus suspects somehow, Regulus). Max is delighted to see him with so many friends, and says they’ll bring Peter over sometime for dinner. Though he’s not sure where that would happen since he’s torn between two homes right now, Remus agrees with a smile and bids the skater kid in the checkered jeans goodbye.
Back at school, Remus spends his afternoons in conversation with Mcgonogall, the waltz teacher who takes care of him. She’d adopted him when his parents died and he tries to stick around, asking advice about Sirius and James and whether moving in with them is a good idea. Mcgonogall says she thinks it is, and that she knows Sirius is a kind young man. As it is, he calls her Minnie, and knows her as a friend and a grandmother of sorts, since she helped him when he first ran away to James’ house. Remus is content with continuing the conversation but is interrupted by a phone call telling him Sirius, James, and Regulus have been jailed for a fist fight on the street.
Remus goes to pick them up, where he meets Bellatrix Lestrange, an abusive cousin of Sirius and Regulus who took particular joy out of torturing Sirius, who she almost killed once. She’s also been known to abuse children, especially those of the poor. Also in jail are Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, a couple married only in spirit who keep having miscarriages and take their abusive anger out on each other and strangers. Their landlord, Voldemort, had demanded unconventional payments and they’d been essentially enslaved to him for years, only escaping his cultist grasp by means of murder, which is why they’re here now.
Remus sees James holding Regulus close and whispering to him as he kisses the cuts and bruises on his face in the corner of the cell, but says nothing about it, kissing Sirius hello. The four of them go home together, and as soon as Regulus is asleep Remus tells James and Sirius that he wants to make a home with them someday, just not right now. They laugh and smile and tell him they’re ready when he is and that they love him, and Remus thinks, Things are good.

Here's some more headcanons of mine on the Marauders and people in the Marauders era on some of them being neurodivergent.
Trigger Warning:
This will mention sensitive disorders such EDs (Eating Disorders), Depression, Schizophrenia, anxiety and more. I am not trying to offend or disrespect anyone with these disorders.
Remus Lupin has ADHD, Insomnia and Anxiety. (I also imagine he had some tics caused by his anxiety and he would crack his muscles a lot because of his ADHD). (Also I like to imagine he was colourblind aswell).
Regulus Black has Autism, Schizophrenia, Depression and an ED. (The whole Black family probably suffered from mental illness and went untreated).
Lily Evans has OCD and an ED that she is recovering from.
Sirius Black has Autism, PTSD and Depression. (Also suffered from an ED that he was recovered from).
Marlene McKinnon has Bipolar.
James Potter has Autism and Dyslexia.
Arthur Weasley had Dyslexia, Autism and ADHD.
Molly Weasley had OCD and Anxiety. (She does a lot of certain things because she thinks that something bad will happen to her family and/or her friend's and she is extremely worried about it).
Welp, I'm too lazy to add more so I'll do more sometime in the future.
I really wanted to do this because I really wanted imagine the character's with disorders so people can relate to them more. Such as Arthur Weasley having Autism. I have Autism and I makes me really happy to imagine one of my favourite character's has it too.

Marauder Headcanons to reacting to learning reader has a mental disorder (like bipolar or autism)
The marauders reacting to finding out the reader has bipolar would include...
James Potter
He’s a little oblivious, bless him.
So he never really noticed your mood changes. He thought it was just down to a bad or good day
When you told him, he’d be really curious about it
Asking you questions and things because he didn’t really understand
Usually, it would make you uncomfortable but this was James, one of your best friends and he was trying to understand you
So you’d answer all of his questions, explaining about what it mean to have bipolar and what it looked like
When you finished, he’d wrap you in a huge hug
He would say anything, he’d just hug you. And you knew then that he understood
And still loved you
Whenever you were in one of your worse moods, he’d do his best to make you feel better.
Usually without words because they were his strong suit. He’d do it with actions
Like getting you food, hot chocolate and hugs.
You’d appreciate it and hoped that he knew that there wasn’t really anything anyone could do
He did understand but he still wanted to help in any way he could
Because younweee one of his best friends, he’d always be there for you
Remus Lupin
Now Remus is very intelligent
From his first year of being friends with you, he’d know that there was something going on but he wouldn’t know exactly what
He’d waiter you to tell him in your own time and never push for anything
He assumed it wa something that was difficult for you to talk about and he didn’t want to put you through any pain
So he’d wait
And when you finally told him, he’d nod. “It’s okay, I don’t see you any differently. You’re still my best friend,”
That would get you emotional. You’d launch yourself onto him, hugging him tightly
He’d never hint that he knew anything about it, he didn’t think that would help anything
Whenever you sunk into your darker moods, he’d be there in any way he could
Even if it was just sitting with you in a comfortable silence while he read and you did whatever you wanted to do
Whenever you were in your happier moods, he’d make sure you’d enjoy it, because you needed to make the most of those moments
Sirius Black
People don’t give Sirius enough credit
He sees things, he gets things
He knew there was possibly something up with you but he tied it to home problems or the stress of school
He didn’t actually think that it could have been something like bipolar
But it didn’t make a difference to him, he still adored you.
You were like a little sister to him, and he loved you no matter what
Anything he could do to help he’d do
Making you laugh, getting you food, making you hot chocolate, walks down by the lake, staying up late with you
He’d do it because to him, you were worth all of that and more
He’d always be reassuring you, and opening up about his problems at home, to make you feel less alone
And you felt for him, and appreciated that he felt he could share with you like you had with him
You help each other through the dark times and lift each other higher during the bright ones
Hope you like it anon <3

For @jegulus-microfic Prompt: Savour WC: 890
Tags: bipolar James, manic episode, very unreliable narrator, bipolar Barty Crouch Jr, psychosis hallucination, mild violence, James is extremely touch adverse during a mania episode like this, Regulus is Going Through It, James gets the wrong impression eavesdropping on Reg/Barty/Evan’s conversation while they think he’s asleep, Reg is overwhelmed and guilty, James is Unwell, Evan is over everyone’s shit and really doesn’t like James’ friends, Barty is a good friend, Sirius/Remus/Pete don’t just abandon James in this they’re there and they probably went to go get help but James has no clue what’s going on around him really so they just aren’t featured, Evan still holds a grudge against Sirius specifically and (though he won’t admit it) he feels angry on James’ behalf because none of them realised he was struggling so he’s an ass to them, apparently manic episodes are a lot harder to write when you can’t remember what your own are like when you have them
James is aware he shouldn’t be laughing. He’s aware of the stares branding their way under his skin. He feels acutely every disgusted look thrown his way and he hears every scoff. He’s aware he shouldn’t be laughing. But he can’t stop.
Someone has turned off the party’s music. Unfortunate, that. If they kept it going maybe he could pass it off that he’d just drank too much. It’s worked for him before. He still can’t stop laughing. His lungs burn for oxygen and his stomach is cramping and his vision is blurry and his skin is crawling and he can’t stop fucking laughing.
He can’t tell how long it takes until his hysterical laughter subsides into maniacal giggles, “Savour it,” he chokes out, still giggling, “Perfect fucking Potter isn’t so perfect!”
He throws his arms wide and spins a circle in the middle of the common room, still giggling, “Someone ought to call the Prophet! Let them know that the only thing James Potter actually is, is fucking crazy!”
He thinks he’s lost his glasses, because whoever is standing in front of him is unrecognisable with how blurry everything is.
“C’mon, J,” they say. Oh! It’s Barty! Barty knows alllll about being batshit fucking crazy, doesn’t he?
His glasses are set back on his face with very careful movements. Barty knows what James can be like like this. He probably doesn’t want another broken nose. James isn’t sure he’d feel it if someone broke his nose. Would he feel it if he broke his own nose? Or would he only think he felt it because he knew it was coming?
“No one is going to break anyone’s nose, James,” Barty says, sternly, in a voice that sounds eerily similar to Regulus’ ‘shut up and quit being stupid’ voice. He must have spoken aloud. Oopsies.
A shadow appears behind Barty, and before James knows it, his body is flying through the air. Is he trying to run from it? Fight it? Who knows. He doesn’t. But he can’t stand that stupid fucking shadow starring at him. There’s a sharp pressure on the side of his head and everything goes black.
Next thing he knows, he’s hearing hushed voices to the side of him. He doesn’t have the energy to open his eyes, so he just stays still and listens.
“Why the fuck would you knock him out, Barty?!” Regulus’s voice is high, despite being quiet. He must be really upset about something.
“Reg,” Barty sighs, it sounds like he’s been repeating the words for a while, “He went to attack, what I assume was, one of his hallucinations and came after me as a result. You know we can’t restrain him. He just panics and hurts himself. The only thing I could do to get him out of there and keep him safe was knock him out.”
The breath seems to exit Regulus’ chest in one swift ‘whoosh’, “Yeah,” he sighs, “I know,”
A chair slides roughly across the floor, “It’s not your fault, Reg,” Barty murmurs quietly.
Regulus scoffs, “I should have seen the signs. I should have known he was going to have an episode,”
“Bullshit, Regulus. You’re in the middle of your OWLS prep. You’ve been holed in the library for the last two weeks. How many times have you even gotten to see him in the last month?”
Someone stands up and begins pacing, James reckons it must be Regulus. He always paces when he’s agitated, “That’s just the thing, Barty! I haven’t seen him more than once or twice since the Quidditch match with Gryffindor and Slytherin. I’ve been too damn busy to notice anything was wrong!”
A new voice chimes in, “Sit the fuck down, Regulus,” Ah, Evan’s joined the fray.
James can nearly see the death glare mixed with a pout that Regulus sends Evan as he plops ungracefully into his chair.
“Potter is not your responsibility. No, shut the fuck up and listen to me, Regulus,” James wants to chuckle, because only a Rosier can talk to Regulus like that and get away with it, “Potter is not your responsibility. You both discussed how stressful these next two months were going to be for you. He understood and respected your need for space, and other than making sure you’re taking care of yourself, he hasn’t pushed. You haven’t seen him more than a couple of times, how would you have noticed anything was wrong?”
Regulus makes a distressed noise, but doesn’t interrupt.
“Potter is not your responsibility. If anyone should have noticed something was wrong, it should have been your brother, or Lupin, or Pettigrew, or hell, even McGonagall. But they didn’t. And that’s not your fucking problem. That’s on them.”
“You’ve said it yourself, Reg,” Barty says, quietly, “James is really good at hiding this from people. He kept it from his best friends, his teachers, and classmates for six years. Hell, I deal with the same shit he does and I didn’t even connect the dots until the beginning of this year.”
There’s a resigned sigh from Regulus. James thinks he might be scrubbing a hand down his face like he does when he’s stressed. The thought makes guilt pool in his gut.
“I know you’re right,” Regulus says quietly, “It’s just…a lot. Right now. It’s all just a lot to deal with right now,”
And James can’t stop the sound that’s something between a crushing sob and hysterical laughter bubble out of his throat. Here I go again, he thinks, destroying everything good in my life because I’m too fucking much. He blacks out again.

Random headcanons for my Esté AU part 1
-Sirius showed up at the Potters home in the summer of her 4th year, but Esté was at her grandmothers house. And since Sirius was having family issues, Euphemia hid all the family pictures. So by their 5th year Sirius still had no idea Esté existed.
-Lily asked James out in the beginning of there 6th year, by standing on the Gryffindor table and shouting it. At first James was just silent and Lily got scared and ran out, followed by James. After a long, silent eternity they walked back in, hand in hand.
-Esté cheered as loud as her lungs would allow, followed by Finn from the Hufflepuff table, and then the rest of the Hufflepuffs, and the Gryffindors, the Ravenclaws, the teachers, and even some Slytherins *cough* Not Severus *cough*.
-Lily knew James had a sister because she wrote her a letter before she even transferred, because “I wanna get to know my brothers soulmate, we are gonna be sisters after all.”
-Once she was expelled Lily, Esté, and Finn  started actually hanging out, in secret.
-Esté was in love with Sirius Black for her first year at Hogwarts, but got over it when his ‘Playboy’ persona set in. The only person who ever knew was Finn, but he is sworn to secrecy.
-Esté has a panic disorder, anxiety, and Bipolar depression. So James knows all about mental illness, and that allowed to help Sirius with a lot of his PTSD and depression after being kicked out.
-Remus knows when someone is keeping a secret, because he has kept them for so long. He has a suspicion about James.
-Lily and Remus have the cutest friendship
-No Peter AU
-No Voldemort AU, but Sirius’s parents are still pure-blood supremacists, as are most pure-bloods
-There’s a weird number of girls in Slytherin, so Esté only has one roomate, her name is Madeline
-Madeline is Esté’s closest friend, only second to Finn
-Euphemia thinks that the bet is childish and they are missing out on good friendships
-Fleamont is in on it

Gerson: Making room for genius and non-conformity helps society […] The Imitation Game, however, asserts a strong connection between Turing’s eccentricity and his brilliance. The association of scientific or artistic genius with unconventional behaviour is hardly new. Aristotle suggested a connection between creativity and depression. Isaac Newton, who displayed a rich variety of mental disorders, once stuck a needle behind his eye socket just for the heck of it. The honour roll of creative genius — Beethoven, Byron, Tolstoy, Van Gogh, Schrodinger, Godel, Turing — is often a story of obsession, compulsion, melancholy and mania.  There are, no doubt, happy, well-adjusted geniuses, pottering around their gardens and playing bridge with their neighbours. And manic or depressive illness is less romantic outside the movies. It is often life-consuming and horrible. But the association of genius with some mental disorder does not seem to be a myth. “When a superior intellect and a psychopathic temperament coalesce,” argued William James, “in the same individual, we have the best possible condition for the kind of effective genius that gets into the biographical dictionaries.” A study by British psychologist Felix Post asserted a strong historical correlation between creative distinction and mental disorder, with the highest levels of psychopathology found among writers. Which may also explain the mental challenges faced by editors. This connection appears to have a basis in neuroscience. Psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman, blogging for Scientific American, summarizes the research that “the siblings of patients with autism and the first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and anorexia nervosa were significantly over-represented in creative professions.” This presents the prospect that a milder version of mental illness is conducive to creativity. And the mechanism may be a form of disinhibition — a failure of the brain to screen out extraneous information that is then combined in original ways. “A reduced latent inhibition,” says Kaufman, “allows us to treat something as novel, no matter how many times we’ve seen it before and tagged it as irrelevant.” The lightning strike of insight seems to come in a mental storm of stimuli. So there may be a thin line between delusion and creativity. And, as The Imitation Game argues, a society often benefits from allowing space for nonconformity. This presents something of a challenge for conservatives. A broad adherence to social convention is important for a just and stable society. But there is clearly some tie between human progress and the rejection of social and intellectual convention. The existence of norms is essential to social cohesion; the creative violation of norms is essential to social advancement. The West has often gotten this balance right over the centuries (as opposed to, say, an overwhelmingly traditional society such as imperial China). In our culture (as in any other), tradition and religion reinforce social order. But an integral part of this tradition and religion is the priority of conscience, which sometimes dramatically overturns that order. This is the power of putting the individual at the centre of the moral order and building everything, including community, on the foundation of individual dignity. The room for nonconformity, it turns out, is also the room for genius.
Michael Gerson, Washington Post
