Negligent Hero

The sharp metal slipped under their chin, "Cheating, my love?" Villain murmured under their breath from behind them.

"What?" Hero flinched at the touch and turned around to face the enemy. The knife almost grazed them if it weren't for Villain's careful maneuvering. Their quiet gaze offered little information as to what they were implying; however, Hero did have their suspicions on what might be on their mind. "Is this about that other villain?"

Villain shrugged, "You should know better than to spend so much time with them." They hadn't suspected Villain might grow lonely without them, and although it made them fond that their opposition had such high demand to see them, it did also bring sympathy with their situation. However, Hero knew they were needed elsewhere, and their job had called them for a reason.

"It's only been a week."

"A lifetime for me." They hummed. Villain kept their unwavering smile, although they seemed more downcast.

"Plenty of other heroes should keep you entertained, my dear." They tilted their head in a teasing manner. They couldn't help but find humour in their lost expression; Villain's pride often got in the way of admitting their loneliness.

They saw Villain's hand softly skim against their cheek, and Hero leaned into it. "None of them are as entertaining as you," They whispered, nearly begging them to stay. "And I expect that other villain must be just as boring."

"Villain, they've been a threat lately. I have to do what I can."

They scoffed and let them go. A look of dissatisfaction colouring their face. Hero saw how the criminal twiddled with the edge of their gloves; they kept themselves composed, but Hero knew the evil genus was upset with the change.

"I'll still come to see you as often as possible." Hero looked back up to them. It was an unreadable mess of emotions, like telling a child no for the first time.

"You know how much I hate being treated as second place." Villain stared them up and down, "Aren't I the focus of those pretty little eyes of yours?"

Hero nodded, their eyes holding Villain's with the promise of their undying devotion to them. They wouldn't let another person interfere in their routine, and they couldn't afford to have Villain suspect they weren't loyal. "I only need a bit of your patience." They cupped their face with their hands and pulled them closer.

"Swear it to me then," Villain spoke gently between the aching sensations within their chest. Their desperation became clearer as they waited for Hero's voice.

Hero ran their fingers through their hair, "I swear to you."

⇴ person a sees person b absolutely hit it off with person c (and is very obviously pained because of it). person b comes over to talk to person a, but is only met with awkward conversation instead of the same boisterous talks they usually have.

⇴ person b sees person a with another person, and they have to bite down on their lip so hard whenever person a talks about the other person, because deep down person b wishes that a was with them (this was more pining than jealousy but oh well).

⇴ "was that a good conversation?" "oh... yeah. it was great" "great." [and there's this thick, awkward silence afterwards].

⇴ person a wishes that they could be person b. person b has it all: charisma, hilariousness, the friends, the partner, etc. (but maybe person a isn't jealous of person b... maybe person a is desperately craving person b's attention and that's why they're jealous)

⇴ person b is watching person a from afar, chatting it up with this other person. b has a strong urge to pull a away from everyone and pull a into b's own little world, but refuses because they want to keep a happy, even if it's at a cost at b's own happiness.

Prompts

A getting increasingly angry about the way C is always touching B -- A's partner.

B has abandonment issues because of their upbringing. They trust A with their whole heart, but the more time A spends with C, B is getting increasingly scared they'll be left alone again.

A is upset with B. To get back at them, they agree with C to play a game to make B jealous. However, the whole play takes a turn for worse when instead of jealousy, B reacts with defeat.

B just met their old friend/first love C again after long years. While A, who is currently dating B, is trying to be as understanding and supportive of the rekindled friendship, they can't not notice the way C is slowly sneaking in between them and B.

B suffers from occasional attacks of insecurity because of their family history and has a hard time dealing with seeing how happy A looks with one of their coworkers.

A tends to speak a lot about one of their friends lately, bringing them up on every possible occasion. B, their partner, is getting progressively unwell every time they just about hear C's name.

“Why were you with them?” “Why does it matter to you?” “It doesn’t. I couldn’t care less, but I’m also nosey.” 

“What are you doing?” Character A questions as Character B picks up the shirt they had discarded to the side while they were messing about. “Going home, since you don’t want me extending my stay anyway,” Character B says, throwing their shirt on, and Character  has to swallow down the urge to stop them from leaving. (Bonus: They end up crawling over to them, arms wrapping around Character B’s waist and pulling them into a back hug. “Don’t go?” they say, softly, cheek resting on their back.)

Hero stepped back as Villain kicked the attacker in the stomach for the fourth time. The criminal had been following them home, and just as Hero thought, they couldn't run into trouble when in civilian clothes. But the universe definitely had a surprise waiting for them.

Sure, it was a dark road, and yes, they walked alone at night, but Hero had enough strength to defend themselves. So, when Villain appeared out of nowhere, as Hero entertained the suspicious person, they were less than grateful. 

"Villain, stop!" Hero grabbed their arm and separated them from the other. 

The other criminal got up. "You'll regret this!"

They watched as they lept out into the dark empty street. 

Villain spat on the floor and wiped a streak of blood from the side of their mouth. 

"Oh my God, Villain. Must you follow me everywhere I go!" They pushed them back.

"Did you know that creep?!"

"No--"

"So, why are you complaining?" 

Hero huffed an exhausted sigh and walked back down the sidewalk to their apartment. Honestly, even as an average civilian, how did they always come to get into problems?

"Hey, wait!" Villain chased them, "Why have you been ignoring me all week, huh?" their hand landed on their shoulder, and Hero shrugged it off without answering. 

If Villain couldn't determine what upset them, that wasn't their concern.

"Come on, baby. You know how much I hate the silent treatment."

"Don't call me that."

Villain groaned, "Is this because of that thing from the brothel? Are you serious?" They playfully nudged Hero, "Are you actually mad at me for that??"

"Just stop talking to me, Villain! I thought we promised each other we wouldn't talk outside our missions!"

Villain waved a hand at them dismissively. "That's just work! This is now!"

Hero shook their head and moved their hair around the front of their face, obscuring it from view, "Okay, whatever. Just leave me alone."

"Oh wow... so, you're going to shut me out like that?" Villain stepped in front of them, stopping them in their tracks. Hero took a long pause, then tried sidestepping them, only to be blocked again. "Answer my question, Hero."

"I said leave me alone. You clearly have other priorities, and so do I."

"No, I get it. It's because you didn't like pretending we were dating, right? You were upset because I said you were my partner, and you just hated me so much--"

"Do you have to keep talking? I just want to go home." They moved to the side again and were stopped. 

"It was just a stupid mission; look, if it upset you that much, just so you know, I don't have feelings for you like that."

"Okay-- great! Good for you!" Hero shoved them hard to one side, "You made that pretty fucking clear last week when you got your hands all over those women!"

Villain stood stunned at their reaction. Hero avoided eye contact and sped up their walking to get home. Their face warmed as tears just barely held onto them. 

"Hero!" They jogged up next to them again, "Wait--no, I didn't-- I didn't mean it like that."

Silence. 

Villain took their hand and pulled them back. "Stop. Let's talk."

"I don't want to talk. I'm done." They tugged their hand futility against Villain's firm grip, finding themselves stuck. They frantically wiped a tear that escaped them before the other could figure out their emotions had poured out. 

"Don't do this to me." Villain pulled them closer.

Hero struggled against them until they came to their chest and quietly rested their head on their shoulder. "Stop it." Hero's strained voice was muffled by the fabric, their back shaking.

Villain patted them softly, hushing the other. "It's okay," They smoothed the wrinkles on their clothes, calming their nerves. 

It was in between those gentle words that encouraged them to let go. To finally put to rest the awful pain in their chest they've allowed pent up for so long.

Hero dug their nails into Villain's clothes tightly, shielding themselves from the night air in the solace of their nemesis as they sensed a hand rub patterns around their back and another through their hair.

They didn't keep track of how long it took to calm down, standing in the centre of a sidewalk on an empty street. But the relief of having to no longer hide their frustration was worth it. Their sobbing stuttered to a stop through short gasps of breath and unexpected hiccups. 

Hero lifted their head enough to meet their face, sniffling and shuffling to fix their image. "I-I'm sorry... I-" Their sentence was interrupted by another downpour of tears. Villain pulled them back in.

"Shhshh... take your time, dear. We have all night." They rocked them back to ease. Another moment later, they were continuing where they left off. 

Hero wrapped their arms around Villain's neck, refusing to let go. Their legs ached from standing, but their mind was too focused on keeping their body close to Villain.

"Are you ready to talk now?"

Hero nodded, taking a deep breath and memorizing the scent of their rival. "...I'm sorry."

"No, I should be the one apologizing. I'm sorry; I didn't realize I was hurting you."

"I was being stupid."

"I thought it was a natural reaction." Their fingers lazily curled up their scalp, massaging it, and if it wasn't for Villain's gentle motions, Hero was sure they'd put up a fight. For now, they were closer to falling asleep each time Villain spoke. Their voice would vibrate throughout their body, calming them.

They licked their lips, "I shouldn't have expected you to know how I felt. We were fake-dating for a mission, after all."

"That's true. But I..." their fingers stopped momentarily, Villain's eyes looking down the street, "I thought you really hated me."

Hero bit their lip with guilt. It was true; they were avoiding their feelings for them, but only because they knew it was out of line to do. They were certain distancing themselves from Villain would make them think of them less, but all it did was increase their desire to see them more. 

They pushed off of them, red eyes begging for forgiveness, "I never hated you." They whispered. "I was afraid of what they'll say."

Villain slid their hand from their hair to their face, wiping the remaining tears from their face, "So, fuck them." They chuckled. A sharp smile they were familiar with rose. 

Hero mirrored their face as their thumb gently rubbed the tears from their face. "It's so hard for me to admit it. I'm a bit hard-headed." They briefly glanced down, butterflies returning to their stomach all over again and that first love sensation appearing. "I kinda..." Hero focused on Villain's chest; it was inviting and pleasant, a warmth they couldn't describe easily. "I love you." They uttered in a soft breath.

Villain raised their chin up, "I love you too,"

The thumping in Hero's chest was unmistakable; they were falling hard for a criminal. Their eyes locked, and Hero shyly turned away. 

"Good. So... that settles it." They smiled meekly under them.

"Aww... was that it?" They pouted jokingly. Hero laughed in response. 

"Well, what did you expect?"

"Hmm," Villain pulled them in tighter by the waist, "I was hoping we could kiss."

Their cheeks turned scarlet while nodding at the suggestion. "Okay. Sure."

Their eyes met in the middle again, Hero noticing Villain flick their eyes down to their lips and back up again, almost asking for permission. They leaned in close, breaths heated and turning clouds in the night's atmosphere. Then, they pushed their lips together.

Delicate motions of small kisses led to longer, bolder shows of affection, with the biting of lips and desperate licks that begged to be let in. Hero breathed heavily, almost forgetting their setting as goosebumps grew onto their skin when Villain's hands smoothly snuck their way under their shirt. 

It wasn't long until they involuntarily moaned into the kiss. It was harder to keep up with Villain's demands as they greedily took in their taste and pushed them back. 

Hero found an opening and pulled away from their little space, panting with cheeks flushed and lips red. "Villain, wait. Not here-"

Their hands continued to prod up their chest and back. 

"Where to, love?" The weight of Villain forced them to tumble back against a fence. Their mouth mercilessly patting their neck down to their collar bone and exposed shoulder. 

"My... hhh..." Hero stifled another moan, their legs quivering. It took all their strength not to give out. 

They pulled Villain in closer, heart racing and breathing next to their ear. Their eyes met again, Villain asking their question once more before sealing their lips together. 

"Mhmm..."

"Where to...?" They breathed heavily, legs rubbing between their thighs. They shuddered. 

"M-my apartment, not out here... Please," Their eyes squeezed shut at the mild sensation of teeth running down their neck again. 

They hummed, lost in the passionate desire. "In a second." They whispered back lowly. 

Hero swallowed back another moan.
