Hey there! Thank you for all you do for the rph and Palestine, Cat. I was hoping you could lend your expertise and suggest some female faceclaims with a similiar vibe and age to Lindsey Morgan's Raven Reyes character? Ethnicity is completely open and ideally only those that are speaking out for Palestine would be golden - I don't really want to use anyone that doesn't have that basic level of human decency! Thank you!
Aabria Iyengar (1985) African-American - has spoken up for Palestine!
Diane Guerrero (1986) Colombian (has said that she's a woman of colour) - in Doom Patrol - has spoken up for Palestine!
Alba Flores (1986) Romani, Spanish [including Andalusian] - is a lesbian - in Money Heist - has spoken up for Palestine!
Sarah Kameela Impey (1991) Indo-Guyanese / White - in We Are Lady Parts - has spoken up for Palestine!
Devery Jacobs (1993) Mohawk - in Reservation Dogs - is queer - has spoken up for Palestine!
Jasmin Savoy Brown (1994) African-American / White - is queer - maybe her role in Scream - has spoken up for Palestine!
Jessie Mei Li (1995) Hongkonger / White - maybe her role in Shadow and Bone - is a gender non-conforming woman who uses she/they - has spoken up for Palestine!
I'm not sure if she's a woman of colour because Latines can be white too so if anybody has any information please let me know!
Seychelle Gabriel (1991) part Mexican - in Blood Fest - has spoken up for Sudan and Palestine!
also not a woman but would be a great alt:
Erika Ishii (1987) Japanese - is genderfluid (she/they/any) - has spoken up for Palestine!
I hope this helps!

Hi. I’ve been reading your Sea Princesses cartoon reviews. Being a Latin American that used to watch the series on Discovery Kids as a child, I got surprised at the fact that the Princes and Princesses’ original Brazilian names weren’t translated in the English version. The princesses’ pets had their names translated (Tenty, Spikey, Gummy), so the choice of not doing that to the main characters, at least for me, ends up being jarring. As you may know, the names of the latter are based on the Brazilian names of the species that each represent, usually forming a straight-up pun. The kind of pun that makes one say “Was there any thought in choosing these names?”. Based on how strange I’ve found having language references that only a few can understand, I’ve decided to make a list of possible English names for Salacia’s royalty (Miss Marla included). If you’ve seen the cartoon “Fish Hooks”, you may realize some influence of its pun-based character names on my, shall we say, “translations”. Without further ado, here we go:
Polvina – Octina
Ester – The writing of Ester’s name remains the same, but her name is pronounced as “Es-TER”, just like in the Spanish dubs.
Tubarina – Sharkina
Marcello – Hamar
Hugo – Telmo
Tata – Tara
Maurico – Tarchin
Bia – The name remains unchanged
Leia (a name that I’m surprised didn’t call the attention of Lucasfilm lawyers back in the day) – Wendy
Marli – Sora
Sirilo – Brad
Vivi – Nelly
Isa – Either the name remains unchanged or the character is named “Aisha”
Juli – Clara
Jessi – Claudia
Elektra – The name remains unchanged
Lia – The name remains unchanged
Delfi – Dolphie
Angelica – The name and its English pronunciation remain unchanged
Soraia – Finley
Camarina – Shrimpina
Caramelo – Stanley
Socita – Gretel
Agostinha – Leslie
Matilda – Helen
Veto – Kash (with a K and not a C)
Caton – Samuel
Miss Marla – Miss Chelsea (Ruby Gillman, where?)
That would be all. What do you think about my translations?
You're either a genius with puns or stepping dangerously into 4Kids localisation territory here. It took me some time to understand what you were going for, but looking at the character names in Fish Hooks, they made the puns more obvious whereas here you have to think about it for more than 10 seconds.
However, I would have named Maurico as "Murchin" or "Murchison" because above him you already had two names starting with T and it felt a bit jarring.

Jessie Redmon Fauset (April 27, 1882 - April 30, 1961) known as the “Midwife of the Harlem Renaissance,” was born in Fredericksville, New Jersey to Redmon and Annie Seamon Fauset. She was the seventh addition. Her mother died and was raised by her father, a minister.
She graduated with honors from the renowned Philadelphia High School for Girls and was the only African American in her graduating class. She received a scholarship to attend Cornell University. She became the first Black woman accepted into the university chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. She graduated with a BA in Classical Languages. She received an MA in French from the University of Pennsylvania.
She moved to Baltimore to teach. She relocated to DC. and began teaching French and Latin for several years at Dunbar High School. She moved to New York City to become the literary editor for The Crisis. She played a pivotal role in introducing the works of then-unknown Black writers such as Jean Toomer, Claude McKay, Countee Cullen, and Langston Hughes to the magazine’s national audience.
She was an essayist, novelist, and poet as well. Her published works include There is Confusion (1924), Plum Bun (1928), The Chinaberry Tree (1931), and Comedy: American Style (1933). All of these writings focus on African American culture and economic struggles during that period. She brought the work of younger artists to the public’s attention during the Harlem Renaissance, she holds the distinction of being the most-published novelist of that era.
She left the Crisis and returned to the classroom. She taught at DeWitt Clinton High School in New York until her retirement in 1944. She married Hubert Harris (1929-1958) an insurance broker. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #phibetakappa

I learned from a post of my colleague, Prof. Gerry T Los Baños, that Prof. Carlos Ojeda Aureus (1947-2024) had passed. Caloy was a retired professor in literature and previous holder of the Diamond Jubilee Professorial Chair at the UP Department of English and Comparative Literature. Armed with experiences as a scholar at El Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericana (ICI) en Madrid, he taught Latin and Spanish at UP's Department of European Languages. “Nagueños” is his highly acclaimed collection of short fiction on the people and places across Naga. “The Late Comer,” his story, won first prize in the 1996 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. His other stories, “Chinita,” Flake of Fire, Bodies of Light,” “Wings,” “Typhoon,” and especially “The night train does not stop here anymore,” also deserve some more critical attention. Also in dire need of revisiting is Caloy’s The Catholic Imagination, published in the inaugural issue of Humanities Diliman (Vol. 1, no. 1, Jan. 2000 - Jun. 2000: 92-108).
His Ph.D. dissertation in UP entitled “Towards a Dialogical Reading of W. B. Yeats' Vision” (1992) is a pioneering contribution to Anglo-American literary studies from a unique postcolonial subject-position. Together with Retired Professor Lilia Fuentebella Realubit, Professors Paz Verdades Santos, and Tito Valiente, and supported by Naga City Mayor (1988-1998, 2001-2010) Jessie Robredo, Naga City Administrator (now Representative) Gabriel Bordado and Ateneo de Naga President (1988-1999) Fr. Raul Bonoan S.J., Caloy co-organized the first-ever Bikol Writers Workshop in Naga (1993). The workshop proved to be a catalyst for the resurgence of Bikol writing many years later. Caloy was proud of his experiences as a 1970 Silliman National Writers' Workshop fellow with National Artist Ricky Lee, Albert Casuga, Conrad de Quiros, and Wilfredo Pascua Sanchez. He frequently reminisced about Dumaguete and his writing friends in Silliman, including Francis Macansantos, Christine Godinez Ortega, Anthony Tan, and Rowena Tiempo Torrevillas. I will never forget bumping into Caloy over lunch at Casaa, where we purchased takeaway food during the late 1980s and early 1990s, or having coffee and meals with Dr Realubit in UP Diliman's Chateau Verde and his mom, Tita Teresing Ojeda Aureus, around Naga's Plaza Quince Martires and Plaza Rizal during the 1990s. On 19 August 2023, writer and translator Victor Dennis T. Nierva organized a walking tour of Naga based on iconic landmarks identified by Caloy in his Nagueños. Before he passed away, he was working on the biography of Dr. Realubit. Despite his brilliance, Caloy remained kind and very humble. I am sure his students will miss him.

Hi hi. First of all thank you so much for recommending poor agnes. I watched it because of you and now i'm OBSESSED.
secondly do you have any recs for problematic/taboo or villain heroine ships with woc? I feel like this is kinda uncommon
I'm glad to have infected yet another person and convert them to the cult of Poor Agnes.
As for WOC taboo ships...the only ones that come to mind is Stay (2017), Shadow and Bone (series) and From Dusk Till Dawn (series). Stay (2017) has Devin Books as “Claire”, she has a bit of a mixed ethnic heritage but it includes Mexican and Native American; her co-star “villain” is white. Shadow and Bone (series) has Jessie Mei Li who is half English, half Chinese; her co-star is English/White. From Dusk Till Dawn (series) has a female villain/victim, Santanico Pandemonium who is played by Eiza González who is Mexican; she has various “romantic prospects” (even women) but technically the villain is also Mexican/Latin but there are also various white guys.
I also asked some friends so they recommended Skye Johnson (her actress is half Chinese) and Grant Ward from Agents of Shield. Rafe and Kiara (he actress is part Black) in the Outer Banks. Ben gross and Devi Vishwakumar (she is Sri Lankan and her character is Indian) in Never Have I Ever.
Of course you can always look into non-English language shows and films. I hope those are a good start.

All of the languages discussed and mentioned in Crash Course Linguistics
The list below outlines the languages that feature in Crash Course Linguistics (Nielsen 2020). For each episode we list both illustrative examples and other languages mentioned. We created a running list of languages used in the videos while writing, to help us actively move towards a greater diversity of language examples. This table might be of interest to you if you want to jump to a particular episode, or if you want to do some critical reflection on your own teaching or lingcomm work.
Looking at the episodes in a single table, I can see the ebb and flow of our focus. It’s much easier to talk about phonetics using a range of examples from different languages than it is to talk about semantics, where you’re focused on the nuance of meaning. I can also see the interests of various members of the production team show through in some example choices, which is why I appreciated working with a team on this project.
The introduction of every video also included an opening animation that had facts about language in English, but also some facts in French, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, German, Korean, Vietnamese and Klingon, reflecting the linguistic diversity and interests of the animation team.
We’ve made this table available as a document on FigShare as well:
Grieser, Jessi; Gawne, Lauren; McCulloch, Gretchen (2021): Languages mentioned in Crash Course Linguistics. La Trobe. Figure. https://doi.org/10.26181/61031a232e96e

It is time. It is finally time for the new Suicide Squad rant (and spoilers will be plentiful):
As someone who was into DC Comics and comics in the mid to late 2010s and had so much hype for the first Suicide Squad movie only to be let down, I was so nervous for this one. I knew it was going to be a roller coaster, but whether I would come out happy or disappointed was up in the air. Having just seen it I will say this: I have no idea if this was a good movie-movie. It was insane. The comedy. The violence. The high emotion. I’m still trying to take it all in. But one thing I do know is that this is an amazing Suicide Squad movie. Gunn and co took the best parts of the comic concept and went batshit with it and that is how this property should be handled (in my opinion). Screw edgelordisms, we need full on insanity free of aiming for shock-value or sexy brutality we want chaos baby.
Starting the whole movie as they did, with Savant as the POV for a mission (or part of the mission) that just goes to hell immediately and kills off so many before the title arrives is the perfect way to start this movie. Like the second I realized this was how they were doing it I was just smiling from ear to ear, this is the spirit of the property.
Part of me wishes we got more Amanda Waller, but what we had was impeccable. Then again, this is Viola Davis we’re talking about, and if she was born to play any character in a superhero story, it is Amanda Waller.
And points to her tech team, introducing them with the death bets was just a lovely way to show how regular this is and how awful everyone is in this movie.
I’m not going to pretend like Deadshot and Bloodsport didn’t have the exact same character- and plot premises… but I will say that Bloodsport felt better executed.
I love that they kept some of the past members and not just Harley. Rick Flag got to have a full personality and interactions with his team members and to be a true leader and it made me so happy for someone who initially did not give a single shit about his character. The Harley friendship? The Dubois friendship? The friendship with that guerilla leader? Amazing. The one American soldier in fictional media I genuinely like. You go Mr Flag.
The new members were… they were insane in the best way. Gone are the shitty stereotypes and present are some of the wackiest creations to ever grace the mainstream movie-sphere (aka the slightly less normal comic creations): A man who has to shoot out polka dots two times a day so as not to die from a space virus. A giant child murdering weasel. A guy who detaches his limbs and slaps people with said detached limbs. King Shark. The second person to command rats with a fancy gadget. They are all crazy and all weird and all more or less morally repulsive people and I love them.
The amount of times I did a double take over the soundtrack I swear. Jessie Reyez? The Pixies? It was so much fun to pick up on once I did.
Was the depiction of a vague Latin American country stereotypical? Yes. Was the secret American involvement predictable and felt mildly patronizing from a non-American, part Latina point of view? Yep. But damn it if I didn’t have a good time with those stereotypes and laugh my ass off at how well executed some were. I don’t know if it was meant as parody, but that one secretary has me thinking so — and if so I am pleased.
Speaking of Latino dictators Harley’s one day romance with one of the villains was something I never knew I needed. Like it was so perfect for Harley that when it happened I almost hit myself for not realizing that this kind of plot should be a normal thing for Harley. And the end of it? Perfect not only in this standalone movie, but also in conjunction with the first and with BoP.
The Taika Waititi cameo??? Oh my god??? I did not expect that and I love it?? Sir, What We Do in the Shadows is impeccable.
Rick Flag’s death actually surprised me. It shouldn’t as this is Suicide Squad, but I kind of expected him to be on Harley’s level of unkillable (because let’s face it, no one kills Harley). What I will say is that his death was good and his final words and actions made me love him all the more. I hope this spawns more Rick Flag content, or at least inspires me to look at what already exists, if he already is as this movie made him (it’s been ages since I read one of the Suicide Squad reboot comics okay).
Starro. How can a villain be so wacky and so terrifying at the same time? I did not expect a literal alien starfish to have more terrifying powers and a more tragic plot execution than Enchantress. But here we are. And that damn star just wanted to be floating in space, and instead it was stuck getting revenge by killing and puppeteering human corpses. Wow that thing was creepier the more you think about it.
I don’t know what I think about Polka Dot Man. I loved watching him on screen but also damn those mommy-issues were on a new level. Not just in his backstory but how he literally sees her in every person around him that was insane. Very funny but like also the kind that makes you laugh just because you’re uncomfortable and don’t know how else to releive the tension.
When Waller got knocked out by a staff member I immediately thought «oh my god Amanda Waller is going to kill half the staff for this», so I’m mildly surprised and disappointed that I didn’t get to see that happen. But also I should maybe expect something like this in a potential future Suicide Squad movie. We can’t have everything in a movie as packed as this.
Peacemaker was very horrible and worked really well. Don’t really have much to say about him, not because I didn’t enjoy him but because I already feel like the film itself has said it for me. But the planting and payoff for his death? Chef’s. Kiss.
Harley’s wardrobe was beautiful. Ratcatcher 2’s combat outfit felt like a steampunk plague dream. Bloodsport’s mask was supercool. Rick Flag’s t-shirt was amazing. But the best little outfit was the Mafalda-keychain and her red dress, hands down. Oh and King Shark’s fake moustache finger moment.
King Shark is shaped like a friend I don’t care how many people he ate alive on screen he looks so huggable. It feels like wanting to pet a bear. You know it will kill you but damn it look at those paws and those cute eyes!
I really need to give it to not just James Gunn but the entire production team for this movie. The aesthetic was perfect. The story was the right blend of whimsical and violent. The finished product was a literal rollercoaster and I mean that in a good way. If superhero movies have to be like amusement parks, I hope they’re more like this one and BoP.
I’ll finish on the note that while I think this movie was great and hopefully a step in the right direction for the DCU/DCEU (as in stop trying to play Marvel’s game and just do your own thing/ let your creative teams run wild and free), it is not the first step. Cathy Yan, Birds of Prey and the production team for it took a step first, and they deserve due credit and attention. If you loved this Suicide Squad movie and haven’t watched BoP yet, do so. Because they really are in the same ballpark while doing things in slightly different ways. And any good DCEU movie deserves more attention so the studios know that creativity and risks should be rewarded. I want more DC movies like this, not necessarily in genre but in creative risks. I want a Black Canary rock movie. I want Alfred in a reverse heist movie alone in the batcave against Gotham villains. I want Gotham Academy on screen play by play from the comics. I want a fully animated psychedelic-like Khalid Nassour as Dr. Fate movie. I want elevated horror movie Constantine. I want weird ass Lois Lane journalist movies with a heavy side of Superman. And I want DC movies I didn’t even know I wanted.
Support creativity in mainstream comic movies. Help me become a DC fan and happy about it again.
