Okay, but maybe Spiderman helps out the Avengers if they need it or if he is in the neighborhood. They don't know who he is. They want to know, of course. But respect his right to be anonymous. Doesn't mean they won't ask questions to try to figure it out though.

Maybe he lets more info slip on occasions. The latest was when he asked Bucky what he was doing for Rosh Hashanah. Which causes him to pause. Most people, if they know their history, know that Bucky was Jewish. But no one really talks about it though. And with the team not being overtly religious other then Steve who still attends mass. It comes as a surprise.

Says he doesn't have anything planned. Other then maybe relaxing.

And the team who is obviously listening in are shocked when Spiderman offers for Bucky to come celebrate.

" It's in a neutral area. Friend of a friend's apartment. Like... it's more Xmen people who I know but still! Ben Grim will be there. And well... probably Deadpool and DareDevil, even though they aren't Jewish. Double D makes me attend mass at least once or twice a year, so he gets forced to join us. And maybe once September rolls around, Bucky is standing in front of a door with a couple bottles of wine. He was not expecting this doe eyed college kid to open the door. A suprized look on his face. Looking Bucky over seeing him bringing wine.

There is lots of laughter in the background, Deadpool screaming that he wasn't going to lose in Mario Kart to a big Rock, aka Ben Grim. Bucky can see a man sitting at the table with red glasses and a cane, talking with Wanda; another shocker as she isn't around as much anymore. And there are a few other people cheering on the game in the living. He could hear lots of sounds coming from the kitchen. He focuses back on the one who opened the door,

" Hi, Mr. Barnes.... I uh didn't think you would actually show up....thanks you joining us! Not that we wouldn't want you to show! Oh god I'm rambling! Come in! I'm Peter Parker, by the way.... let me introduce you to everyone"

Crisis on Campus

I've been debating weighing in on what's been going on at Columbia University for the past week, given the contentious nature of the subject matter. At this point, it'd be irresponsible to stay silent. Peaceful protests, good trouble, fighting for social justice, and having compassion for innocent human lives - especially during a devastating war - are all good things. But that's not what's happening on Columbia's campus. These are antisemitism-fueled hate marches that are directly inciting violence and threatening people for simply being Jewish. It's gone well beyond criticism of a foreign government and their policies. It's gone well beyond the war and the region's history. It's now like Charlottesville in 2017. Pure antisemitic hatred. And I could not possibly be more disappointment with my alma mater.

Kaine connecting with religion but that religion being Catholicism always felt like a wasted opportunity and/or something that still has the potential for a good story? Perfect way to explicitly state Peter's Jewish identity and explore it. Also tbh I think Judaism would be good for Kaine. Yes I'm also Jewish but I swear I'm speaking objectively- it's such a hopeful religion and culture, rooted in struggle and survival in a way that Christianity isn't.

That's a really good insight about survival and Judaism and Kaine, anon. It's like the old joke about every Jewish holiday being "they tried to kill us, we survived, let's eat" but for Kaine it's more like "they tried to kill me, they succeeded, I'm here anyway so now I'm going to order $800 worth of room service." Extremely Jewish of him.

I have complicated feelings about Kaine and Catholicism—though I'm gonna go ahead and say I think comics in general handle Catholicism badly and kind of just treat it like General Christianity or Default Christianity which is I guess what happens when your media empire is founded by Jews.

But yeah like honestly I don't think my feelings on Kaine and Catholicism and Kaine and heterosexuality are really that different, where he's aware that these are things you do to Be A Person but doesn't grasp the nuance because he was grown in a vat by the worst man to ever get tenure, so he's trying to connect to something that isn't a good fit for him or that maybe he's not particularly interested in as part of his efforts to be a Real Person and not just Peter Parker's broken clone. Which is really interesting! I don't think that was Yost's intent in Scarlet Spider (2012) when it comes to either Christianity or the Kaine/Annabelle romance, but that's always how it comes off to me on a subtextual level. Kaine is trying to do things the "right way" but he only has a very limited idea of what the right way is, or even that there are other options out there for him. He sees a church, he goes into the church. He sees a girl who is into him, he tries to follow a script where he can't be with her because he's bad news, not because he's not actually interested. (I have a lot of feelings on Kaine's canon romances, such as they are. He's the gay clone.)

And because he's not like Ben and he doesn't have all of Peter's memories, he's sort of awkwardly stumbling around the concept of faith as he sees it in the wider world, without a full understanding of either the nuances of that faith or of his own heritage through Peter. I also feel like even if he did know Peter was Jewish, that might be something he would feel reluctant to embrace unless he was given permission by Peter to share in that with him, because of his complicated feelings on Peter and Ben and his relation to both of them and what he feels he can and can't take away from those connections and what he hasn't earned.

I also do sometimes wonder if Miles Warren was a (lapsed) Catholic and if that's something Kaine picked up through him. That would be something interesting to explore.

OOC: I’m excited for Across the Spider-Verse for numerous reasons, like the fact that Mayday Parker will be in a movie for the first time. But one thing they need to do with Peter B Parker is make him even more Jewish than last time. Breaking the glass at his wedding was fine but we’ve gotta get past blink-and-you-miss-it details like this or the tried-and-true “background menorah." Make Peter B Parker Jewish as fuck. Make it overt. And make it joyous. Jewish identity is based on religion, ethnicity, or both. Explore that tastefully, unlike other Marvel properties (looking at you, Avengers: AoU and Moon Knight) Who cares if it makes not-Jewish people uncomfortable. Spider-Man has always been coded as a white-passing Jewish person. It’s about time to start depicting him as one.

Yes please give me Jewish Bucky and Peter re-affirming their faith in different ways after everything they've been through. Maybe Bucky filling the role that Peter's dad or Uncle Ben would have done for him if they'd lived long enough, reminiscing about his own childhood and how hard it was.

Bucky being worried that the Jewish community wouldn't even want him to be a part of it after everything he's done. Peter feeling like because he was raised pretty secular that he doesn't really know how to do it 'right' and that he's too inexperienced or doesn't know enough to go back to it now, but they encourage and help each other to at least try.

Peter showing up on Bucky's doorstep for Hanukkah with a crappy menorah he found in a thrift shop that's seen better days, saying that after the year they've had - years, plural - no one deserves to be alone during the Festival of Lights, right? Sure, Bucky complains and rolls his eyes and is wondering how the fuck this kid knew where he lived, but he invites him in anyway because he's right, it's been hell, and it's the first time in actual decades that he's even seen a menorah, let alone a lit one that's burning bright as they eat store-bought sufganiyot and Peter asks Bucky what he remembers, if anything, about growing up Jewish in the years before World War Two.

awhile back you talked about some spider-man side characters and main characters being jewish, do you have any head cannons of J. Jonah Jameson being jewish? hope you're doing well!

I definitely personally headcanon J Jonah Jameson as Jewish. :,) I don't think it's necessarily as strong as the coding with Peter, and that Jonah is a character who could go either way, but given that Stan Lee based him heavily on himself, his bluster and mannerisms come off very "middle-aged Jewish man yells at cloud" to me. Like, he's very clearly supposed to come off as a certain type of New Yorker, and the lines between that and a certain kind of shouty Jewish man blend at a point, and I think Jonah kind of exists on that point. And I kind of like the idea of him and Peter as parallels in this way -- Jonah thinks he's mentoring this Jewish kid who reminds himself of himself Back in the Day and Peter's railing against this mentor he refuses to see as a mentor in a completely different tax bracket. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
