Yma Sumac, from Peru, virtually established exotica wither her five octave range, her Latin roots & with the help of Les Baxter. I have as mp3: Voice of the Xtabay (1950), Mambo (1954), Legend of the Jivaro (1957); and as a stand-alone, the compilation Shou Condor (1997). An amazing voice, excellent songs, some original, some ‘traditional.’ Some with more traditional accompaniment she is worth…

As with any society whose practices are viewed as gruesome to other cultures, a deeper look reveals reasons and explanations for what otherwise seems like a despicable act. The shrunken heads of Jivaro are one such case. [Warning: graphic content]

Famous Five Art Nostalgia #LC06
Introductory post
Introduction to ‘Les Cinq’
‘Les Cinq’ Masterpost
✈️🪶🌕 Les Cinq et les pirates du ciel – The Famous Five and the Hijackers
Original publication date: 1973 (France), 1981 (UK)
Tumblr media
(Original cover by Jean Sidobre, 1973)
In this adventure, the Five travel overseas and get stranded in the Amazon forest! The thrills! The excitement! The… prejudiced clichés.
Yeah, please be advised that the depiction of Jivaros in this book, and Amazonian communities in general, is fraught with the pervasive racist clichés of its time. This, obviously, does not reflect in any way my own views.
~~~~~~
Plot summary:
(Disclaimer: All provided translations are my own.)
As Julian, Dick and Anne join George for their customary holidays at Kirrin Cottage, they are overjoyed to learn that Uncle Quentin is offering them a three-week trip to a holiday camp in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil!
Three days later, they’re taking a plane from Paris along with the other young people going on the same trip and the four counsellors in charge of the group. As the plane is approaching Rio, three of the counsellors (Julien, Marco and Luc) reveal themselves to be hijackers. Weapons in hand, they threaten the passengers into cooperating, announcing that they do not intend harm, but that they are merely smugglers who want to ‘borrow’ the plane to go to Colombia and retrieve unspecified goods on the downlow.
(The children discuss the hijacking situation as the plane is nearing Rio)
[TRANSLATION: Dick: Soon, the whole world will know about the hijacking. Our parents are going to be beside themselves with worry... George: What are these bandits planning? That’s what I'd like to know...]
The hijackers land the plane in Rio, have it refuelled, and have all the passengers and crew disembark while they keep a single person as a hostage to prevent the police from intervening. Unfortunately for the Five, their chosen hostage is Anne!
The plane takes off again. Anne is initially kept in the cockpit and gets acquainted with the makeshift pilot – Luc, who has some experience flying small planes, if not airliners, is sympathetic to her ply and promises she’ll be treated as well as possible given the circumstances. Some time later, Anne is allowed to walk through the cabin and discovers to her delight that Julian, Dick and George have been hiding in the plane (while Timmy remained in the cargo hold). After a few hours of flying, Luc loses control of the plane, which crash-lands in the Amazonian forest!
After a few days trying to unsuccessfully repair the plane’s broken radio, and as food starts going scarce, the whole group decides to leave the plane and try to reach civilisation, following the Japurá River.
(The morning after the crash-landing)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: At dawn, Julien and Luc have a walk-around to explore their surroundings, followed by the children. Luc: We're in the middle of the rainforest, far away from civilisation. Narrator (second panel): In the cockpit, Marco is struggling with the radio. Marco: This set is beyond repair... We're in a pretty pickle...]
Tumblr media
(Trekking through the forest)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: Luc decides they should all take everything they can carry: food, medicine, blankets, cookware, and it’s with a heavy heart that the children leave the plane that has been their refuge.]
During the night, the group is attacked and captured by a local tribe of Jivaros. The Jivaros take them to their village and lock them up inside two separate huts. The hijackers find the way to escape during the night, but they don't want to be bothered with the children and vow to send help as soon as they reach a town or village. While Jivaro warriors go after the escapees, the children are led to the village’s sorcerer who, after a short ceremony, allows them to move freely around the village, although they are forbidden to leave.
Tumblr media
(The children meet the village’s sorcerer, named Rnâ)
[TRANSLATION: Narrator: The sorcerer gazes for a long time at the children and takes them under his protection... The Jivaro sentry turns and leaves.]
A few days later, they discover that the sorcerer is a former Belgian aviator named Guy Latour who also crash-landed into the forest a couple of years ago, his dramatic arrival causing the Jivaros to think he was sent by the gods, thus granting him ‘sorcerer’ status. Learning from the children about the plane’s broken radio, Guy sets off to the crash site on the next day and manages to repair the radio, although he doesn’t receive a reply to his call for help.
Meanwhile, the children make friends with the chief’s son, Tofi, and learn about an ancient treasure which, according to legend, can only be found by children. Guy convinces the chief of the village, Pfô, to launch an expedition – and should the Five find the treasure, they’ll be allowed to leave. The treasure’s location is hinted at in a three-part riddle: “When the sun sinks in the middle of swamp, you will see the moon at sunset, then the yellow goddess will look on you with her green eyes.” The Five deduce that they must go to a swampy area at midday and that the treasure is a golden statue with emerald eyes.
Tumblr media
(Figuring out the riddle)
[TRANSLATION: Anne: Obviously, the third part of the riddle refers to the treasure itself, the yellow goddess must be an idol. Dick: A yellow idol... probably made of solid gold!]
The Five set off in search of the treasure along with a group of Jivaros. Their journey is punctuated with a few mishaps, including a jaguar far too inquisitive for its own good, a caiman that Dick almost stepped onto, an anaconda that fancied a bath in the same pool as the Five, and an attack from enemy warriors who were driven off by George and Timmy disguised as demonic entities using the sorcerer’s mask and a few feather ornaments.
A few days into their journey, as the group is making a halt near one of the many pools dotting the area, Anne notices that the midday sun is perfectly reflected into the nearest pool. Looking to the West, they discover a huge stone disc covered with mirrors reflecting the sun. Having thus solved the first two clues, they make their way into the forest and discover an abandoned temple where the golden statue is waiting. But they face some unexpected competition when they meet the escaped hijackers who, after losing their way into the forest, just stumbled upon the temple. Having thus found the precious but cumbersome golden statue, Marco and Julien now want to steal its emerald eyes for money.
Tumblr media
(Temple raiders)
[TRANSLATION: Marco: Its eyes are emeralds! We'll get them out and sell them for a good price when we get back to Rio. Guy: No way! This idol must be returned to Pfô intact. Otherwise he'll never let us go! Julien: I don't care about you or the children. What I want is to become rich. Luc: You'll never get rich if the Jivaros catch you. Be reasonable, Julien, it's in all our interests.]
A fight ensues and the Jivaros capture the would-be thieves. Once everyone is back to the village, the three men are condemned to death, but George comes up with a plan to save them: using Marco's ventriloquist skills on the golden statue, and with Guy’s help, they make the Jivaros believe that the goddess wishes to judge the thieves herself and that they will be put to death by the gods in the “empire of the winds” (from which the Jivaros think Guy is originated). Guy fortuitously receives an answer to his renewed SOS from the plane’s radio, and a fleet of helicopters soon arrive to pick up the children, Guy, and the hijackers to – so the Jivaros believe – said “empire of the winds”.
A few days later, the children are reunited with their parents in Rio de Janeiro where they get to spend a few days’ downtime while the hijackers are arrested.
