Wait, I'm so sorry. You don't have to, of course, but can you explain the keto/ketosis/cutting thing? I though I kinda knew what keto was but some of the language/specifics confuses me.
they’re the same thing a teeny bit in that keto diet forces the body into ketosis but the main difference is that on keto you’re trying to go into a a permanent state of ketosis.
ketosis is the metabolic process in which the body burns fat storage instead of carbohydrates, so by not eating carbs you can force this process to happen. someone who works out a lot will go through phases of bulking (eating a lot of calories and carbs so that their body can use that energy to create a lot of muscle) and cutting (forcing the body into ketosis so that the excess fat is burned and the muscle they’ve just built is very visible and toned). the main idea is that they only temporarily cut the carbs (because carbs are GOOD and you NEED THEM)
someone on keto will be not eating carbs in a long term way and in a constant state of ketosis so that their body is always burning fat storage instead of using carbs for energy. this is a shit diet because as soon as you bring carbs back into the diet you’re just going to gain the weight back! plus the fact that you’re depriving your body of a NECESSARY macromolecule. don’t believe keto propaganda.

And you thought you’d live that way forever, doomed to repeat the cycle. Until Josh.

I tried to make a comment before but tumblr pulled out a magic trick and made it disappear. Anyways I saw your dieting post and I want to recommend you try low carb high fat. Just replace the rice with meat plus olive oil or butter. A bunch of Ryley headcanons
I need to write these down before I forget them- just lil titbits of what I think would happen to and with him from living on 4546B for so long
It is most unlikely that he would simply be climbing up the mountains with his bare hands- as much as I acknowledge that this man is a feat of pure strength, I do struggle to believe that he can seriously scale the mountain island with his grubby mitts alone. I think that on the Alterra ship there was likely a few climbing harnesses, likely reserved for maintenance workers or the like, in a part of the ship that we cannot access in the game. As Ryley is essentially a janitor, he likely would have access to these. And when it comes to rope, this would likely be found in the same place. And more of a fun idea- what about if he had little spokes on the back of his heel made from stalker teeth that he could use to slide down slopes! Of course, he likely will need a climbing axe. This he could likely craft from various metal scraps and pipes.
The main hurdle I have with Ryley's improvements to his whole getup is that he needs to be aerodynamic, as he often has to do swimming. He normally wears a whole scuba kit with the rebreather/helmet etc... but if we were to say add useful accessories such as belts, built-in weapons, small pouches, etc.. then suddenly all of those aerodynamics are lost. Though more often he's in like a prawn suit/seamoth in the later-ish parts of the game, so this makes a bit of sense, as the introduction of exosuits and vehicles aligns with the introduction of new inventions and tools. Plus the area of 4546b he is on is a tropical climate, so everything has to be super lightweight and unobtrusive.
Now- considering his diet and lifestyle: Ryley lives on a 13-20% protein diet (considering that fish are 60-82% water and 1-20% fat) and that his daily doings are almost entirely swimming, which uses the entire body's worth of muscles, as well as retaining his breath AND scaling mountains, extreme heat, fighting off deadly creatures, traversing difficult landscapes, and surviving electrical shocks, radiation, overwhelming tropical climates, concussions, brain damage, a deadly bacterial infection, just to name a few. Essentially, he is built different. This means that he will be burning calories, and consequently fat, at an astronomically high pace. This man has to be utterly shredded. It is not until late-ish game that he *might* gain carbohydrate-based fuel (marblemelons and lantern fruit) so by living an INCREDIBLY protein-rich keto diet while practicing strenuous exercise, he is likely to gain muscle mass. Hence, his physical appearance will most likely change from how it was at the beginning of the game. The body is incredibly fickle, and I know it's incredibly hard to show this in a video game! Seeing as he spends at least 7 days on 4564B (including average un-glitched speedruns) this diet is sustained for long periods, which will prove drastic results, for better or for worse.
AND considering that Ryley's PDA at the beginning of the game is completely reset, there are likely hundreds of blueprints missing that would have normally been on his PDA, seeing as the PDA system is one that houses all kinds of tools, both from Alterra and outside sources (Mongolians, sunbeam, etc...) he likely would have even more things to find and build that we, the player, might not be able to. I mean, take the large amount of Below Zero items that aren't in the original game! Goodness knows what's out there... and seeing as he is an engineer/janitor, he likely has experience in handiwork, so upcycling junk he finds is very likely in his DNA! I would imagine him living much like Maida, using bits of junk and handiwork to craft a lifestyle designed to survive the harshest conditions and defend against the worst of the worst.
And also- he most definitely made some panpipes to keep himself occupied, like imagine the soft whistle of panpipes echoing off the two mountains of the floating island at sunset... sweeeeeeet

Just got back from the doc. He said I seem to be healing up properly but if I still have persistent pain in my kidneys then we’ll need to do another CT scan to see if he missed any stones.
Have to go back for another ultrasound in 3 months or so.
I can eat spinach, potatoes, and tomato sauce all I want as long as I also consume enough calcium.
Avoid cola but other sodas are fine.
All stuff I already knew and was already doing other than laying off of potatoes and red sauce, and I stopped drinking soda all together other than the occasional treat.
He said that if I WANTED to go keto it might benefit my kidneys but isn’t necessary, and that being on a keto diet would be difficult because you’re supposed to cut out almost all carbs and at the same time someone that makes stones shouldn’t have more than a small amount of animal protein each day.
He also said that losing weight reduces the risk of stones and I kind of gave him a :| because I am mid sized at best. I don’t need to lose weight, but I do need to rebuild the muscle I lost while sick. For myself. He didn’t say that.
He suggested drinking a gallon of water per day. I’m not going to be able to do that, I already know it. I’m already in the bathroom all day at about a quart per day plus a couple other drinks.
Not getting to do any work because That Guy is home.

When my partner and I ate the same food, he did all the cooking, while I did all the cleaning.
This worked out really well for the both of us, for many years, in fact — I ate great, hearty food, day in and day out for fifteen years! Match made in heaven, indeed. But when I changed my diet from keto to vegan, I took over my meal prep. In the beginning I wasn’t worried about taste so much. I only cared that my meals were edible and that I was getting the nutrients I needed. But things changed. In the spirit of experimentation, I’d add little things to my plates, like fine slices of burdock root to my salad (and actually appreciate its subtleties), or try an exotic-to-me vegetable like collard greens — veggies that I’d only seen on cooking shows — and then totally fall head over heels.
All this inspired me to get a cookbook, this one: The Rawsome Vegan Cookbook by Emily von Euw. My first cookbook! It’s beautifully photographed, and the recipes look simple, which is a huge plus.

hi so i'm currently experiencing the same thing where I feel like i'm presenting symptoms of PCOS, am extremely insulin resistant, and have symptoms of hirsutism but have never been diagnosed and it's extremely frustrating. my boyfriend and I did a lot of our own research and what ended up finally helping me shed weight that i've hung onto and bloat was licorice root supplements, gleditsia spine chinese herbal tea 100g, and a keto/sugar-free diet (also eliminating artificial sweeteners.) plus finding the right birth control which I am still in the process of. good luck and I hope you get help soon <3

I knew I shouldn’t have cheated on my diet for my birthday.
I gained 3lbs and it’s been 2 weeks. I haven’t lost them. I’ve been exercising 4x a week, walking 10k steps, in my usual calorie deficit, plus keto/low carb. Less than 25g of carbs a day.
And I have lost anything since my birthday. I’m so upset. Whatever I did fucked up my system.
I have a trip planned so I’m going to start reintroducing carbs for the next two weeks so my body can readjust and not gain excessive weight during my trip. Im hoping after being back on carbs and giving my body a break for a few weeks, I can go back on low carb and see if I can fix everything.
But all in all I’m so upset.

Body Positivity isn't just a mindset for other people, but a journey of self-acceptance too. Like, yes, obviously, bullying or harassing or whatever someone because they're fat or hairy or they don't meet some arbitrary definition of attractiveness is a really shitty thing to do.
But, it's also about learning to accept yourself for how you look. A lot of body-pos stuff really is taking a good long look at yourself and understanding if maybe some of the feelings you have towards the people you used to look down on were, in fact, internalized things. And I'll be honest, I needed to do this myself. I was not always the relatively nice but mouthy woman you know me as.
I don't talk about this a lot but I used to be really dang skinny. Like, very underweight. When I was 19, I weight 115 pounds at 5'6, and almost none of that was fat(I was a jock(and a boy, at the time)), and so I had a lot of exercise, and none of the massive amounts of food I ate went anywhere near my waistline or butt.
A few years later, I would weigh 150, sedentary from a job mostly sitting around answering calls all day, no gym membership to speak of. I gained weight really quick, actually. And then latent anorexia hit. I started getting worried, after a few months of this. I wasn't really sure why, but it turns out a lot of that was also dysmorphia and dysphoria kicking in from the Gender Questions I was asking myself and also trying to hide. A few years after transitioning though, I hit 187, and that feeling of being too fat was a gnawing anxiety. (un)Fortunately, my self-soothing for anxiety was overeating, so you can see where I fell into a vicious cycle of trying to lose weight desperately and the anxious need to eat to numb-out the stress of life, dysphoria, and being an adult.
At one point, I killed my desire to eat almost entirely, and went on a crash diet. Keto, plus low calorie, plus serving size restriction. I worked out for an hour a day, feeling like I was going to pass out the entire time. It wasn't healthy. I kept that up for almost 2 months, and went from around 185 to 165. I am not incredibly large, nor am I obese, but some part of myself needed me to hit arbitrary numbers.
At some point, I finally recognized that this wasn't healthy, and I was only feeling worse. I allowed myself a burger, and visited a therapist. I don't have full-blown anorexia, but a big part of what was causing my issues were internalized and arbitrary standards that not only conflicted with the way I wanted to treat other people, but with a healthy lifestyle.
Do I still want to lose weight? Yea. Have I found a healthier mindset and, arguably more importantly, a healthier reason? Also yes. I accept my body for what it looks like. I accept that my eating habits are not "the problem" or that I need to be thin.
I have killed the part of me that wants to be thin-as-string and I'm learning to accept that the journey to losing weight isn't about numbers and goals and forcing myself into unwinnable regiments of working out until I physically cannot stand and eating just enough to wake up the next day.
I wanna wear a dress I bought when I first started transitioning. I was already getting bigger, and it very nearly fits. When I suck in my tummy, I look fantastic in it. Thats it. That's my goal. No numbers, no waistline measurements. And I'm gonna take my fuckin' time doing it, because it's my body, and good food is worth enjoying if it takes another week or two.
I don't feel frustrated about my weight or my body anymore. I'm comfortable in my skin, and I've learned to examine my thoughts when I'm feeling gross. I'm getting better. I love myself.
I'm not trying to say anything here, either. This is just my personal journey. If you learn something from it, then great.

„The one thing i’m not enjoying this season is the amount they bring up carbs and the carbs are bad rhetoric.“ Yes! Thank you for bringing this up because it’s something that’s bothering me sooo much! They had a few mentions in the seasons before but never like this. Plus in their case it’s absolutely ridiculous because most of them work a physically demanding job and they work out regularly so they need fuel to sustain. They cannot diet and they don’t need to. It irks me the way they play into whole bad food/good food culture. It can be so harmful because some people actually believe it and don’t eat right. And Tommy’s comment made me so mad. Her character is a paramedic captain she should know better. A few treats don’t made you fat.. ugh.. sorry for my rant. I have just a lot of thoughts about the whole diet culture and the way media handles it. (Don’t get me started that only a certain body type is supposedly healthy and attractive!) But I am very glad that I am not the only one who doesn’t like it.

From now on discussion of ED and disordered eating
It’s one of the first things I’ve noticed about this season and it’s also one of the biggest overarching themes I’ve noticed and I do not like it. They’ve always been food centred but this is the first time it’s seen as negative.
At first I was wondering if they were doing an ED storyline or hinting at one but now I think they’re just being careless and thinking things like oh ho ho don’t eat that it’s BAD is so ingrained in media/Hollywood that they doesn’t even notice what they’re saying as wrong.
They’re giving an ED eating habits and I don’t think they’ve noticed? TK only eating when his partner is around is one. Only eating keto/paleo/other is one. Obsessing over weight. Obsessing over fats in food.
It’s all very very irritating if they’re not going to take it seriously.
NB: food is never bad for you. Give your body what it needs. Fats are essential. Life is about moderation sure, but not feeding yourself is as bad as overdoing it.
