SUMMARY:

Dazai Osamu is the farthest possible thing from the ideal woman Kunikida Doppo has written so much about in his notebook.

And yet . . . Kunikida is hoplessly in love with him anyway. Kunikida doesn't belive he has a chance with his coworker, I mean, have you seen the way he flirts with women? Straight as the rulers Kunikida used to use in his maths class.

Dazai meanwhile is also inlove with uptight but still charming coworker. But how can Dazai ever come close to the woman Kunikida has in mind?

he gets a full seven hours of sleep with no distractions, eating a full breakfast precisely at 6 AM, and then meditating. today was his free day off, and all he could think about was doing work. he’d offered fukuzawa to do more paperwork, to discard the load that was on the old man’s shoulders, but he at first declined saying, “you shouldn’t do too much. this day is possibly your only day off.” kunikida only shook his head, pulling his notebook and pointing at it. “i must follow my ideals, sir,” he said firmly. “i must retain the quota of doing seventy-two pages of work.” fukuzawa stared at him for a moment before sighing slightly. He opened his drawer to obtain a tuna can from his secret-stray-cat-stash (SSCS), because it was his free day too. The man didn’t even bother to protest against the golden-blond, and only wished him luck in his assignments.

now at his apartment, kunikida was prepared. he had a neat stack of paperwork with his laptop and of course, his notebook. he adjusted his glasses while gazing out the window. it had snowed last night, with inches of thick snow covering the pathway. since his desk faced the window, decided to open it to at least have some cool breeze in while he worked. it would give me some form of productivity, he thought while also fully opening the window screen as well. He sighed contently, opening his laptop and started typing.

unbeknownst to him, a troublemaker was walking by.

osamu dazai, who just had a typical failed suicide attempt, was mopeing around like a teenager on a winter break, tossing his empty can of tomato juice around his hands. he was thinking about what he wanted for dinner. canned crab probably. with cheap beer. ten cans of beer, maybe. he whistled to himself and then stopped.

he saw kunikida. But, alas, kunikida did not see him. dazai felt his heart skip slightly, seeing him with a furrowed brow working diligently. His glasses were perched on top of his head, which made dazai slightly swoon-

nah. dazai thought. maybe my body is just wired to tease and bother the shit out of him. typical dazai-centric thoughts. dazai crept up towards kunikida’s apartment and started to slowly form a snowball (with his bare hands of course, because he hoped to also catch hypothermia). “KUNIIIIIKIDAAAAAAA!” dazai yelled, which caused kunikida to snap up his head to see the perpetrator. unfortunately, the snowball hit him.

the snowball slowly dripped from his face and onto his desk. dazai only grinned.

“...”

“...surprise?”

kunikida slowly got out of his chair, grabbed his coat, scarf and gloves, put on his snow boots and walked calmly outside where dazai was waiting with a cheshire-like smirk. he took and breath and screamed, “DAAAAAAZAAAAAAIIIII!” he started forming half-assed snowballs and started pelting dazai with him. dazai, on the other hand, was laughing maniacally like a person high on drugs, with a grin reaching his ears. the snow-covered ground became a battle-ground, the two engaging into a chaotic snowball fight. kunikida’s annoyance gradually turned into amusement as he threw, turning uncharacteristically carefree. the two laughed like children on a playground, the chunks of snow glistening, making it look like a hallmark christmas card. to a passerby’s eye, it looked like two grown assed men who were on drugs.

as the snowball fight continued, it got more competitive. kunikida had the sudden urge to outwit dazai, and started to become strategic, hiding behind various things and even building a snow fort. He began a pattern of throwing each snowball while dazai skillfully dodged his attacks and snapped back with his own. in the midst of the laughter, they found a shared joy of letting go of their burdens (well, mostly on kunikida’s part) and embracing the lightness of the moment. kunkida’s mind shifted away from his ideals, and dazai from his future suicide attempts. they just became two individuals enjoying each other’s company in the purest form of fun. Eventually, fatigue caught up to them, leaving their laughter to only breathless chuckles, with fog coming out of their mouth. they stood facing each other covered in snow with comfortable silence. dazai’s grin turned into a warm smile, brushing snow out of his hair. kunikida did the same with his coat.

“you know, kunikida,” dazai began, still trying to get a chunk of snow on his coat. “it’s good to let loose sometimes.” kunikida nodded, cleaning his glasses. “yes, I suppose you’re right,” he paused and cleared his throat, “for once.” dazai only laughed and went towards him, making kunikida hesitant and step back a little. he brushed more snow out of kunikida’s face which caused him to slightly flush. “you’re always being so uptight,” dazai said softly. “you should loosen up more.”

“...well, um, i-”

“also I have a confession to make,” dazai said seriously, which caused kunikida to twitch, making his ears turn red. “since you were (assuming) doing work, could you do…mine?”

“what.”

“okay here me out, so, um, i was busy having-”

“a one night stand,” kunikida interrupted. “or a suicide attempt. or drinking beer and zoning out.”

“...that’s not true! i was fooling around-, no, wait, um, i mean MENTORING, atsushi for his job with kyoka-”

kunikida turned around and started walking away. “H..Hey! Wait, PLEASE KUNIKIDAAA,” dazai went on his knees. “PLEASEEE, I PROMISE I’LL-”

kunikida sighed and stared back at him, his expression unreadable. “i’ll do it for you. but you have to do something, for once.” dazai beamed and dusted off the snow on his pants. “thanks, kunikida.”

awkward silence.

“...i’ll have to get going.” kunikida said, breaking the silence. “hm? oh, yeah.” dazai replied, sort of red-faced. probably the cold. kunikida guessed. “see you tomorrow! we should do this again,” dazai grinned. kunikida nodded.

they both go to their respective apartments, both smiling (kunikida’s almost barely noticeable). kunikida arrived back, taking off his shoes and closing his window for any further cautions. he was about to start his work, but he decided to take a small break, because after all, maybe the troublemaker, osamu dazai, was right.

Hey! Would you look at that. Guess I sneezed (for four months straight, but shh), and another fic for this pairing is out.

I'm glad to announce my first Kunikidazai longfic: Dazai, Kunikida, Age Fourteen. It was first inspired by this fanart by bird app user KevinnScottland. TL;DR, what if these two met as teenagers?

The summary:

August 31st, 2003. Doppo Kunikida ditched his bike. He returned home awaiting a storm. Quickly, fearlessly, at the end of the summer break. Someone was in his way. A dustrag of a young man, with an empty stare and a sharp tongue. In the hostile, chaotic city, that was an unwise approach. Doppo offered him his umbrella. Choices are intriguing.

This was for the BSD Big Bang 2023, in partnership with PocketCultist on AO3 (who might release fanart as my teammate) and @chaoticquill as my beta reader for the English version. Be sure to check the event page, too! Teamwork for fanwork.

There is also a Brazilian Portuguese version, which is the original one, in case you can read it.

The first chapter is a whopping ~20,000 words long. I'm trying my best to see it as a “long first episode”. It should be 31 chapters long.

Summary:  Dazai wasn’t a comforting person. Not the kind of person to tell a person he’s sorry ─ when most of the time it was a blatant lie, nor the one to say he understand the grieve. But Kunikida somehow make him want to comfort him. Dazai didn’t feel any obligation towards him but a sincere desire to be there for him, to be there with him.

It was not an exaggeration to affirm that Dazai knew Kunikida better than anyone else. Not that it was Kunikida’s intention or will, but Dazai was too observant and they spend a lot of time together as partners nor he had something to hide from him.

Kunikida didn’t expect him to care though. Didn’t expect him to show up to his apartment at two in the morning with a huge bottle of wine and a stupid smile on his face. He was ready to shut the door on his face, but Dazai was always one step ahead and slide inside way before Kunikida could even send him off.

He sighted and massaged his temple with his fingers, “What do you want, Dazai?” he asked.

“I was returning home with this gift an old lady gave me and I saw your light on and thought I should come in and share it with my best friend Kunikida” he said, starting to search for some cups in the kitchen. Kunikida looked at him, squinting his eyes suspiciously.

“First of all, there wouldn’t be an old lady awake at this hour, and second of all, I’m not your best friend” his expression softened, not in affection but grieve. A soft expression that denoted how broken he was.

Dazai didn’t answer right away. He was turning his back on him while pouring the wine on the cups. He knew Kunikida too well for his own good too. When the boy died on Kunikida’s arms, when he came back home and found the light still on, Dazai knew Kunikida was at it again; grieving, hitting rock bottom and despising himself. He could never understand Kunikida’s ideals totally, but he respected how devote he was to them, and he couldn’t understand his grieve completely either, but he could try at least, to ease the pain a little bit.

Dazai turned on his heels and handed him the cup “I just can’t stand by and watch you destroy yourself again”

Kunikida looked surprised, eyes a little bit wide, and eyebrow raised… and then he sighted and took the cup, defeated. Kunikida dragged himself to the couch, where he had a pile of papers and photographs from the case, Dazai followed him, quietly.

“I’m fine” Kunikida said as he closed the computer and sat on the sofa.

“Liar”

Dazai sat next to him, and they both drank the wine, in silence, looking at the messy pile of papers. It was a tricky case, but it wasn’t a fail. The client ended happily and criminals were in jail, the problem occured when Kunikida tried to save someone he couldn’t save, when someone died in front of him and was unable to do anything about it again. Not that he was able to do something, but Kunikida took the blame and guilt all together anyway.

He couldn’t exactly describe it, but there was no harm in being there, right?

“You look ugly” he broke the silence, taking another sip of the wine “Better go to sleep”

Kunikida drank again, finishing his glass and put it on the mattress, next to the pile of papers.

“You suck at trying to make people feel better” he made a pause, resting his head on the support. “Has anybody tell you that?”

Dazai looked at him, a little bit surprised he could be sassy even when he was that emotionally destroyed. “No” he answered after a while. “I have only tried to comfort one person before, and it went terribly wrong” Odasaku had died, and Dazai always thought that maybe if he had more comforting skills or empathy, he could have saved him.

He never really did ─ or tried, ever again.

For Kunikida, it was incredibly weird being with Dazai and not wanting to strangle him every five seconds. But it was a good weird.

Kunikida was aware Dazai knew him well, while he knew little to nothing about him and thought it was okay since they still worked very well together despite how annoying he could be. In those moments, he was surprised Dazai was quiet, without doing stupid jokes and talking about suicide, and it was more surprising that he found rather comforting.

He absolutely hated when people went on discourses on why it was not his fault, on how he did well and how there was nothing he could do to avoid the result. Because it didn’t make him feel any better and rather sunk him even more. But Dazai was just there, in silence, drinking wine.

In those moments, Dazai felt like an invisible hand he was holding to while hanging of a precipice.

“Just… let me..” Kunikida rested his head on Dazai’s shoulder, arms crossed against his chest and closed his eyes a little bit way to violent.

Dazai tensed at the sudden contact, and didn’t know what to do at first, but he relaxed when Kunikida’s clean scent reached his nose and when he noticed how quickly the frown on his forehead was disappearing while sliding into Morpheus's arms.

He waited until Kunikida was fully asleep to move a little bit in order to make himself more comfortable.

“God. Making me worry so much…” he whispered to himself with a sly smile on his face as he rested his head on top of Kunikida’s.

He couldn’t ─ nor intended, to end his grieve, but at least, he if he could make it bearable enough for him to sleep, then it was worth it.

Dazai shouldn't be allow in the same country as a woman, and yet here he was handing out dating advice.

"Let yourself relax! Be chill and cool about it!" Dazai beams, yanking Kunikidas notebook out of his hands and throwing it in the public garbage can of the city. Cars speed by as Dazai gives kunikida a small lesson on

"Hey!!" Kunikida hustles over to the bin, digging it out, "Don't throw my child in the trash!"

"You won't need that if you're gonna be anywhere within a 50 ft radius of a woman." Dazai continues, "You have no rizz or gyatt... What to do about that...?"

"Are you speaking another language?" Kunikida asks as a genuine question. Dazai chuckles, getting a horrible great idea

"No! Gyatt means 'lady', so if you say "you have a nice gyatt" it means "you're a nice lady"! Trust me, all the girls love to hear that." Dazai says with a mischievous smirk. Kunikida raises his eyebrow, but proceeds to take notes none the less.

"And what does 'riss' mean?"

"It's pronounced 'rizz'. Rizz means you're a nice guy! So if you say "I have so much rizz", it means I'm a nice guy and you should date me! In a less awkward way ofc!" Kunikida scribbles this down. Dazai continues to ramble and teach kunikida his "knowledge".

"I think it's about time you approach a woman! I'll take this for the time being!" Dazai once again steals kunikidas notebook, pointing to a random woman, "Go approach her!! I'll be watching!" He giggles, pushing Kunikida towards the lady who was peacefully walking before disgaurding kunikidas notebook once more in the public trashcan.

"To, hey girlie! You got a nice gyatt! I've got rizzler frfr!" Kunikida attempts. "I-I- meant have rizz and am rizzler!" He stutters. The lady cringes and awkwardly slips away, leaving kunikida confused and Dazai a mess of mischievous laughter.

"What did i do wrong?" He turns to Dazai, watching the brunette die of laughter.

"Oh, taking advantage of your ignorance is the best thing a man could ask for!" Kunikidas eyebrows furrow in confusion.

"Whatever, where's my notebook?"

"..."

Safe to say he researched every word Dazai told him of. Poor thing, his whole face would be redder than Lucy's hair. At least now he understood why she walked away so awkwardly...
