When she loses him too, she ends up surviving instead of giving up in tribute to his death. If he didn't die, the story would've had a happier ending but it would've been 10x cheesier. She held onto that necklace when she could’ve easily cashed it in. That’s how little and how much the heart of the ocean ends up meaning to her - holding onto it for 84 years, never knowing she’d be able to take it back to where she lost everything, and with a simple plop into the ocean let it all go and found peace after a life full of exciting and beautiful memories.
